India might take Canada to FATF for inaction over terror funding: Report

Biggest Selection, Unbeatable Prices. Shop Paragon for all your Restaurant Equipment and Supplies at the Lowest Prices — Guaranteed!*

India is planning to drag Canada to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) for its inaction over Khalistani extremism and terror funding. As per Indian officials, despite New Delhi having shared ‘credible and clinching’ evidence with Ottawa, the latter has failed to rein in terror funding operations on its soil. As per media reports, India might share a “dossier of the old and new

evidence” with the FATF, the Paris-based watchdog responsible for legal, regulatory and operational measures to combat money laundering and terror financing. “Canada acquiescing to India’s demand to reduce its diplomatic strength by 41 is not enough as India’s key concern is about funding and shielding of Khalistanis on Canadian soil,” a diplomatic source was quoted as saying by The Sunday Guardian.

A pedestrian was sent to hospital after being hit by a bus in Surrey, police say. The man was hit Tuesday (Oct. 24) at King George Boulevard and 96 Avenue near Surrey Memorial Hospital at about 3:15 p.m., Surrey RCMP said. Police are asking motorists to avoid the area for at least a few hours. Surrey has had six fatal pedestrian collisions

so far this year as ICBC marks Pedestrian Safety Month in response to a “sharp increase” in pedestrian deaths and injuries, particularly between October and January. In 2022, eight pedestrians were killed on Surrey’s roads. According to ICBC, 43 per cent of crashes involving pedestrians happen during those months as weather and visibility worsen.

Trudeau ‘laughing stock’ in India, ‘doormat’ for Biden In interview with Namaste Radio Toronto, Canadian oppn leader Pierre Poilievre said will restore professional ties with India if elected to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Canadian Leader of Opposition Pierre Poilievre Saturday deplored the hostility shown to Indian diplomats at public events in the country, calling it “totally unacceptable” and vowed to repair ties with New Delhi in an interview with Namaste Radio Toronto, a station that focuses on the Nepalese community in Canada. Poilievre also called for

charges against those who target Hindu temples or templegoers in Canada. His comments came in the backdrop of an escalating diplomatic row between India and Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India last week of breaching ‘International law and the Vienna Convention’ by seeking parity in the strength and rank of Canada’s diplomatic presence in India. Trudeau, Poilievre told the radio station, is “not worth the cost” of housing and mortgages after having been in power for eight years.

What prompted India to resume Canada visa services India has resumed a select number of visa services in Canada. This came after a withdrawal of all visa services following a diplomatic row prompted by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accusing Indian agents of being involved in the murder of pro-Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India’s decision to resume visa services in Canada came after discussions held over 10 days, Hindustan Times reported Thursday.

This was done because Canadian authorities apparently showed “greater responsiveness” to New Delhi’s concerns, an Indian official said, as per the report. The official, however, did not reveal who were part of these discussions. A report in the Financial Times published earlier this month had claimed that India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had met his Canadian counterpart Melanie Joly in Washington DC in September.

Canadian diplomats misusing powers to give visas to Khalistan supporters - India says Canadian diplomats are misusing their powers in different consulates across Chandigarh and other areas of Punjab to grant visas to people with known criminal antecedents who are Khalistani supporters, top government sources told CNN-News18 amid the face-off between India and Canada over the killing of

Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Sources said the diplomats have gone “very soft” on visas to people despite knowing their antecedents. They added that the visas are being extended just to support the Khalistan cause so that the momentum can gain maximum strength.

South Asian trucker smuggling cocaine from Detroit to Windsor snorted some of his load before border check up A long-haul transport truck driver dipped into the 30 kilos of cocaine he was smuggling into Canada, opening one of the bricks hidden among California oranges, snorting it, and then resealing the package during his four-day drive, which may explain his strange behaviour at the border.

Crossing from Detroit into Windsor with his paperwork in order, he told border agents there was nothing but oranges in his truck — but then added that a man had tried to recruit him to smuggle drugs and maybe next time he could agree so the government could arrest the guy.

Vancouver Island jewelry dealer targeted by thieves for 22nd time

A Vancouver Island jewelry dealer says he’s taking a hard look at whether he wants to stay in business, after being broken into yet again. Jeff Ross, who owns Gold Silver Guy shops in Nanaimo, Qualicum and Duncan, said the break-in Tuesday night was his 22nd in 25 years and the fifth this year alone. What’s more, this is the third time thieves have been

able to get into one of his shops through an unconventional method, and one he has little to no defence against. The thieves, he said, were able to break through a wall of concrete cinder blocks at his Qualicum location, before cutting out the security system and eventually breaking into the safe.

Premier Eby should copy Manitoba NDP’s gas tax cut

Premier David Eby should look to New Democrats in Manitoba for ideas to make life more affordable. Manitoba’s new premier, Wab Kinew, promised to suspend the provincial gas tax. “I don’t know about you, but in our household, the workhorse that we use to drive to work, to drive the kids to their activities is a pickup truck and it takes 100 litres to fill up every time we go to the pump,” Kinew said. “That means that this announcement for a family using a vehicle like [that], it’ll save you $14 every single time you gas up.” With the Manitoba NDP joining the chorus of provinces cutting gas taxes, it’s become clear it’s not a partisan issue. Conservative, Liberal and NDP politicians across the country have taken action to reduce gas taxes. Politicians are coming out against sky-high gas taxes for good reason. High fuel taxes mean high costs for everything delivered by truck, train or plane. And higher prices for anyone buying those goods delivered to the store. Across the country, 55 per cent of Canadians believe the federal carbon tax should be cut or killed, while in B.C. that number shoots up to 60 per cent. The carbon tax has roughly the same impact on the price of fuel as B.C.’s provincial gas tax. So it’s fair to say British Columbians want our provincial government to provide gas tax relief, too.

Eby should follow the lead of other provincial premiers and cut gas taxes. That’s especially needed in B.C. as drivers pay the highest gas taxes in the country.

Taxes currently add up to 64 cents per litre to the price of fuel in B.C, and even more in Vancouver and Victoria. The provincial motor fuels tax makes up 14.5 cents per litre of gas.

18 months jail for former CRA agent for unlawfully collecting child benefit A Quebec man who formerly processed child benefit applications for the CRA has been sentenced to jail time for falsely claiming tax credits and benefits worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. South Asian couple ordered to demolish house extension, laneway rental A B.C. Supreme Court judge has ordered a couple to demolish their Surrey house extension and laneway structure he said they constructed without regard to laws or regulations. The City of Surrey petitioned the court for their demolition and removal, in the 8000-block of 148th Street. The city said the structures’ square footage greatly exceeded bylaw allowances, that setbacks were not observed and

structures were constructed without any building permits or required inspections. “I accept that the public interest favours the demolition of the structures as opposed to condoning unlawful and potentially unsafe building and rental practices,” Justice John Gibb-Carsley said in his Oct. 24 decision. Owners Jagmohan Singh Sidhu and Gagandeep Kaur Sidhu admitted that the structures offended city bylaws both in the

manner in which they were constructed and their size and location on the property. However, they argued that given the housing crisis in the Lower Mainland, ordering demolition and removal is wasteful and too drastic a remedy. They asked for the opportunity to retroactively legalize the infractions so that the structures can continue to be rented to tenants. He said they “built the structures in flagrant violation of the city’s bylaws in

Bank of Canada holds interest rate

PM Trudeau blames investors for ‘commodification’ of housing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says investors and corporations have played a significant role in Ontario’s housing crisis. Recent data from Statistics Canada revealed that as of 2021, 43 per cent of condo apartments and between 14 and 21 per cent of houses in Ontario were owned by investors. In the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) alone, investors owned 33 per cent of condo apartments and between nine and 16 per cent of all houses.

Trudeau was in Brampton last week to announce $114 million in funding for that city from the government’s $4-billion Housing Accelerator Fund. When asked about the Stats Canada data during a news conference, the prime minister said investors and corporations buying up condos and houses has led to the “commodification” of housing by eating up much-needed supply and driving up prices in the process.

where the structures are located; by grossly exceeding the square footage allowed on the property; and by not obtaining any permits or inspections during construction.” He said because Sidhu is a realtor and had obtained permits for initial building construction, he should have been aware of the bylaws. The city first confirmed the presence of unpermitted construction on Nov. 15, 2021.

On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada decided to keep the benchmark rate of interest at five per cent. The BoC has been raising interest rates since March 2022 as a tool to cool down an overcharged postCOVID-19 economy and reduce inflation. This is good news for most people who have debt. But what does it mean for Canadians in general and British Columbians specifically? “We’ve seen in Canada a lot of evidence of slowing economic momentum. This interest rate decision was accompanied by a

monetary policy report that updates the bank’s economic forecast and they downgraded Canada’s growth both this year and next. “Typically when you get slower growth and slower demand in the economy it does reduce price pressures and inflation. So the bank is encouraged that the slower momentum will eventually lead to lower inflation, but they are certainly keeping their guard up because inflation has not behaved the way they would like it to.”
