Metro Vancouver home sales dropped 35% in June The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver says last month’s home sales dropped by about 35 per cent since last June and 16 per cent from May 2022 as houses remained on the market longer and interest rates rose. The B.C. board says sales in the region totalled 2,444 last month, down from 3,762 in June 2021, and 2,918 homes in May 2022. Last month’s sales were 23.3 per cent below the 10-year June sales average. The board’s chair Daniel John says the drop in sales came because buyers have more properties to choose from, but rising interest rates and 39-year high inflation are causing them to be cautious and thus, listings Continued on page 12

Fire rips through Vancouver Church Dozens of people have been displaced after an intense, thirdalarm fire on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Wednesday night. Toronto directs contractors to reinstate Sikh security guards who lost work due to clean-shaven rule The City of Toronto is directing its contractors to reinstate any security guards who lost their jobs because

they were required to shave their beards in order to wear N95 masks at work. The directive comes after a complaint by the

Boris Johnson steps down as UK PM following flood of resignations Boris Johnson has resigned as prime minister of the United Kingdom. The British leader was ousted from the post after more than 50 members of his Conservative government resigned this week. The resignation comes only weeks after the Prime Minister survived a confidence vote by Tory MPs after winning the support of 211 MPs. Continued on page 7

Fiji’s national airline to fly direct to Vancouver National Airline, Fiji Airways, will commence direct flights between Nadi and Vancouver, Canada starting in November 2022. The announcement was made this evening by the airline’s Chief Executive, Andre Viljoen. He says the first direct flight will be on November 23rd and will return on the 25th. Indian rupee hits record low, breaches 79-mark on dollar strength At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened lower at 78.86 against the greenback and finally settled at 79.03, down

18 paise over its previous close. The rupee depreciated 18 paise to close at a record low of 79.03 (provisional) against the US

dollar on Wednesday, weighed down by persistent foreign capital outflows, a strong dollar overseas and surge in crude oil prices.
