Metro Vancouver & parts of BC bake in heat-wave Temperature records are melting across British Columbia as prolonged heat spell grips the province but Emergency Management BC says it is not anticipating an extreme heat emergency. A statement from the agency says residents should monitor temperature forecasts and take advantage of cooling stations set up in many communities but it’s not expecting a repeat of last year’s deadly heat dome that killed more than 600 people. Environment Canada is maintaining heat warnings for most of B.C. and says 10 daily maximum

Pope Francis ‘deeply sorry,’ asks for forgiveness for residential schools atrocities Tears streamed down the faces of Indigenous elders and survivors of residential schools as Pope Francis stood before them and begged forgiveness for the “deplorable evil” committed by the Roman Catholic Church. BC police say they are committed to ensuring public safety after string of shootings The head of the British Columbia RCMP says police are focused on ensuring public safety and combating a rise in gang violence in the wake of a recent wave of shootings in the province over the past week. “Our commitment to keep you safe remains,” Deputy Comm. Dwayne McDonald told a news conference Monday afternoon. The news conference was

held just hours after a series of shootings overnight in Langley City and Langley Township that left two people dead and two more injured. The suspect was later killed by police Monday morning. That shooting came a day after two men were killed in a targeted shooting in Whistler on Sunday, which police say was connected to the wider Lower Mainland gang conflict.

Canada says Pope’s apology to indigenous people not enough The Canadian government made clear that Pope Francis’ apology to Indigenous peoples for abuses in the country’s churchrun residential schools didn’t go far enough, suggesting that reconciliation over the fraught history is still very much a work in progress.

The official government reaction came as Francis arrived in Quebec City for meetings with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon at her Quebec residence, the hilltop Citadelle fortress, on the second leg of Francis’ week-long visit to Canada.

The government’s criticisms echo those of some survivors and concern Francis’ omission of any reference to the sexual abuse suffered by Indigenous children in the schools, as well as his original reluctance to name the Catholic Church as an institution bearing responsibility.
