To help our readers understand the candidates, and what they stand for on important issues, the Asian Star Newspaper will bring to you, our readers, the candidates answers. The first candidate we sat down with is Jinny Sims from the SurreyPanorama Constituency. The Asian Star: Everyone is asking; why is The NDP calling an election right now? Jinny Sims: The other question is, Why not? We are in the largest health pandemic – our economy’s been turned upside down, the way we live, the way we celebrate, the way we say goodbye to our loved ones, the way we work, everything has changed. Vancouver homeowners pay highest property taxes in Canada, research finds Vancouverites are paying the highest single-family property taxes in Canada, according to a professor at Simon Fraser University, but it’s unclear exactly what they’re getting for all their extra dollars. Dr. Andrey Pavlov, who is a professor of finance and real estate, says Vancouverites are also paying the second-highest annual property tax increase this year. “This calculation is

based on single-family homes because singlefamily homes consume pretty much the same level of municipal services across the country, and therefore, in my view, should be paying about the same tax,� he explains. “I’m very curious as to why homeowners in Vancouver end up paying so much more than pretty much any other place in Canada.�

PICS names its Long-Term Care Facility as ‘Guru Nanak Diversity Village’ Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society (PICS) wishes to announce its decision to name the upcoming 125-bed, long-term care facility for South-Asian seniors after Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Guru Nanak is one of the greatest religious, political and social reformers who was advent in the middle of the fifteenth century; as many scholars have observed, ushered in a new era of renaissance that began to dawn upon the Asian continent.

Guru Nanak initiated a movement to champion for human rights with a mission to denounce discrimination and espouse the doctrine of ‘Sewa’, meaning ‘selfless service’; which involves acting selflessly and helping the underserved without any reward or personal gain. This year is the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The PICS’ Board has passed a special resolution to name the building as ‘Guru

Two Vancouver residents accused of helping to fake refugee claims over a dozen years Two people in Metro Vancouver are accused of colluding with foreign nationals to make fraudulent claims for refugee protection in Canada. The Canada Border Services Agency says Roger Bhatti of Delta

Canada’s deficit to hit $330B as coronavirus lands ‘permanent’ economic impact The parliamentary budget office says the federal deficit for the year is on track to hit $328.5 billion as a result of COVID-19 and the “permanent impact� it is having on the economy. That figure released this morning reflects measures announced as of the start of the month, including an estimated $225.9 billion in emergency aid in response to the pandemic. Relative to the size of the economy, the deficit amounts to 15 per cent of gross domestic product, making it the largest over 50-plus years of comparable data. The Liberals said in July that the deficit would be $343.2 billion.
