Hindu temple in Toronto defaced with anti-India graffiti by ‘Canadian Khalistani Extremists’
An MP in Canada has blamed ‘Canadian Khalistani extremists’ for a Hindu temple in Toronto being defaced with anti-India graffiti. Inaugurated in 2007, the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir is run by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. The sanstha is a “spiritual, volunteer-driven faith” that believes in bettering society by advocating Hindu ideals of “faith, unity, and selfless service,” as per PTI.

Parm’s father, Hakim Singh Dhaliwal, contributes by taking a litter pick-up stick and a plastic bag on his daily walks, driving to different neighborhoods to pick up garbage from the streets.
He also shared how driving along 96 Avenue he saw a guy in a pick-up truck with an old mattress stop by the side of the road. “I felt right away this Sardar was going to dump the old mattress in his pick-up. So, I slowed down and looked back to see what was happening. When the man started to remove the mattress, I immediately made a U-turn and confronted the man. My wife was with me and cautioned me to not confront the pick-up driver alone but I told her we have to. I stopped the man, of course he shouted at me, saying why I care. I asked him would he like people to dump their garbage at his property? I said to him that he was not in India anymore and reminded him why he came to Canada in the first place”, shares Parm.

The man drove off with Parm following him for the next tenfifteen minutes till the man gave up trying to dump the mattress.
The idea that the Dhaliwal family ran with came from Parm’s daughter, young ten-yearold Daya. She suggested they clean up the streets in their predominantly South Asian neighbourhood, where they lived, of posters, big item garbage like mattresses and broken nick-nacks that people were dumping on the streets, in front of parks and other open areas.
“Now it’s mostly the guys who go around cleaning the streets,” interjected Parm adding his daughter joins in sometimes. “It’s the adults, guys and some ladies, who go out to clean the streets. Having a female in the group tends to keep the abuse from the people who pollute the streets down,” explained Parm. When confronted by angry people, Parm says this to them – “you spend money to landscape your property, install a nice fence, now will you put up posters on your fence? No, right? I say to them think of this city as your home and look after it like you would your own house.”

Important note for those nailing posters on hydro poles; BC Hydro says the vibration from the nailing on these wooden poles can electrocute the person doing the nailing. It is very dangerous and carries a fine of $2000.00 and higher because of the danger associated with the act of nailing. Unfortunately, nothing will be done to stop this behaviour until someone gets hurt.
Parm has started a Facebook page, Keep Canada Clean, where he posts about their clean-ups and what they are doing. Parm shares how he once posted on FB that the Newton area was starting to look like Ludhiana in Punjab, India. Dirty with rubbish on the roadsides. He got a message from someone who was upset that Parm was giving Ludhiana a bad name. Parm responded that he compares because Newton was starting to look like Ludhiana. This prompted the original poster to start he’s own campaign to clean up Ludhiana!

Daya, now fourteen, shared what they did those first days in cleaning up the streets in predominantly South Asian neighborhoods, “I remember going out every evening picking up signs and stuff. It was kind of fun as I had my cousins with me. We would tear down the posters and see how clean it looked afterwards.” She also shares how after awhile, like any ten-year-old, she preferred to be playing outside instead of cleaning the streets, “but I kept doing it anyway.”

“Daya suggested we remove promotional posters that were plastered on city land and on hydro poles since many of these events the posters promoted were already over and were just slowly disintegrating in the environment while being an eyesore, making the area look dirty and unkempt,” shares Parm.

In response, Prime Minister Trudeau and his colleagues dismissed the idea out of hand, on the erroneous pretext that the extension of Western Canadian gas pipelines to the East Coast is not profitable and would take too long. Instead, he suggested ‘green hydrogen,’ an expensive and unproven business and technology.

This was a superficial and manifestly untrue portrait of the real situation. Such LNG development is actually quite feasible and likely very lucrative.
These impediments include opposition from the Trudeau government and the Quebec provincial government’s moratorium on any further oil and gas development and its opposition to any construction of new or expanded pipelines in the province.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s recent visit to Atlantic Canada was an opportunity for a serious long-term strategy to address several different aims: European Union (EU) energy security, East Coast economic development, Canadian energy industry growth (and higher federal tax revenue), and the likely-alarmist crusade to lower carbon dioxide emissions.
The result of his visit, unfortunately, was abject failure.

The Canadian Gas Association says that, even were the current dramatically high natural gas prices in the EU to fall to more sustainable but still-robust levels, LNG liquefaction terminals on the East Coast and LNG regasification terminals in the EU would be commercially viable, and, with the vast abundance of Canadian, and, also, American natural gas, there would be lavish amounts of gas to send across the Atlantic. However, wholly artificial obstacles remain.
The current federal government has stated that it will not provide any financial or legal support to pipeline construction, extension or expansion, nor any permitting or construction of LNG terminals.
An opinion piece by Ian Madsen from the Frontier Centre for Public Policy.
Lesser impediments include local or community opposition, climate activist legal action and disruptive blockade protests or sabotage.
Scholz sought assurances that Canada would become a long-term, reliable and responsible supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU, including Germany, which is highly dependent on a hostile and highly unreliable gas exporter, Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

However, it is neither crucial nor essential that such support is offered nor that the Quebec government accede to pipeline right-of-way construction or other activities. There are already gas pipelines that cross Quebec all the way to the East Coast.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Tuesday that the government will introduce legislation to temporarily double GST payments for six months for lowincome earners. It will also provide lowincome renters with a one-time $500 top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit.
Ottawa says it will begin the program with children under the age of 12 and provide up to $650 per child for families making less than $90,000 without dental coverage. The government estimates that the dental care program for children under 12 would benefit 500,000 Canadians.
The federal government says it will provide inflation relief for low-income Canadians by temporarily hiking GST credits and providing payments for those struggling to pay rent, but economists warn it will likely add pressure to core inflation.
Police said the investigation will span for several hours Wednesday morning and traffic will be affected.
A portion of Hastings Street in Burnaby, B.C., has been shut down by police due to a fatal shooting.
The government also says it is moving forward on developing a national dental care program, a key part of its supplyand-confidence agreement with the NDP.

Cullen also announced plans for a $10 million 2023 program to help municipalities with climate change planning.
Canadians with low and modest incomes that qualify for the GST tax credit will see payments double for six months. The current benefit is up to $467 a year for a single individual without children with a maximum income of just over $49,000, $612 for married or common-law couples and single parents, and another $161 for children under 19 years old.
B.C. RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken conduct of the investigation.
The total cost of these measures is approximately $4.6 billion. Legislation will have to be passed before the programs can be implemented.
But Nathan Cullen also acknowledged that more could be done to address housing among other issues.

On Monday, the 28-year-old Brothers Keeper gangster was shot to death at about 5:30 a.m. as he sat in a car in a driveway in Brampton, Ontario. In the intervening years, Mohammed faced a number of firearms charges that were dropped last May. And he watched his younger brother Naseem “Little Man” Mohammed — also in the Brothers Keepers gang — go to prison in Washington State.

Let’s take a look at how attacks or vandalism incidents by pro-Khalistani elements have increased recently and if Canada has become a safe haven for Khalistan supporters:

The City of Abbotsford is getting funding help from the B.C. government to bolster its drinking water system against floods, wildfires and other climate-related disasters. Municipal Affairs Minister Nathan Cullen said Wednesday the $62 million in government funds will support a new well and watertreatment system to serve more than 165,000 people in Abbotsford, Mission and the Matsqui First Nation. The vulnerability of the system was made clear in November 2021, when flooding from torrential rainfall forced 85 per cent of the water supply system off-line, he said.

The gondola’s cable was deliberately severed on separate occasions in 2019 and 2020.

RCMP have released a profile and a thermal image of the person suspected of cutting the cable of the Sea to Sky Gondola twice in the past three years.
The individual is believed to be “extremely fit,” know the area around the gondola well and have extensive knowledge of the tools needed to cause damage to the cable while allowing them to get away safely.
The Mounties’ major crimes special projects section also says security video from the second instance the cable was cut in September 2020 shows how a security guard narrowly avoided being killed by the falling cable cars.

“Eighty-five per cent of Abbotsford’s water system relies on one single supply. During that flooding, that source was compromised,” Cullen told reporters after speaking at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention, an annual meeting of municipal leaders, in Whistler, B.C.

New database shows rental housing completions in BC varies by municipality

“Even though homebuyers put a lot of money down for the project, the real estate developer still has no money to finish the construction,” Chen said. Real estate firms had access to easy credit from the banks, and citizens had an insatiable demand for property. That’s because Chinese families’ investment options are limited, and owning a condo is essential for marriage and educational prospects.
That said, Canada’s hospitality sector will enjoy much better days than it did during the peak of the pandemic, due to demand crossing pre-pandemic levels.

The Bank of Canada is in the midst of one of its most aggressive rate cycles in its history, raising mortgage costs for prospective homebuyers and chilling Canada’s once-scorching real estate market. Over the past seven years, Pitt Meadows and West Vancouver built the fewest rental units per capita of all municipalities in Metro Vancouver, while the City of North Vancouver added the most. This is the kind of information that can be pulled from a new website that lets voters compare what housing is needed with what has been approved and constructed in 160 municipalities across B.C. “The most striking thing is that not a single municipality has been able to experience completions that come close to the need and the demand that’s out there. For me, that’s the real story of the data,” said Thom Armstrong, CEO of the Coop Housing Federation of B.C., which joined the B.C. Non-Profit Housing Association and the Aboriginal Housing Management Association to create the website.
“Some people say the developer squandered the money in Southeast Asia. That’s the rumor,” Chen said. The Qifu City property developer did not respond to Marketplace’s questions.

Recession, rise in unemployment in store for Canada as inflation peaks: RBC

“A really significant focus of council’s time (in West Vancouver) has been looking at housing supply for workers, particularly renters, and what they’ve built in the last seven years is certainly not sufficient to tackle their workforce housing crisis,” said Jill Atkey, CEO of the B.C. Non-Profit Housing Association.

Canadian home prices marched lower for the sixth straight month, showing the central bank’s rate increases are having the intended effect of cooling the nation’s overheated housing market.
The housing bubble was sustained because — collectively — property developers, Chinese banks and citizens had faith that home prices only went up.
“All the buildings have roofs except for two. But only the building frames are complete,” Chen said, adding that construction stopped in 2019.
The groups hope information from the database will spur candidates for the municipal elections in October to sign a five-point pledge to streamline the process to build non-profit, Indigenous and co-op housing by cutting red tape and prioritizing land-use decisions as well as protect the existing supply. hike again next month. That has lifted the interest rate on variable mortgages offered by major lenders including TorontoDominion Bank and Royal Bank of Canada to more than 5%. In response, home prices are falling as economists had expected, with steady declines in most areas and faster pullbacks in the markets that had the biggest run-ups during the Covid-19 pandemic’s ultra-low interest rate environment. That should hearten the Bank of Canada as it continues its tightening campaign, showing that rate increases so far are cooling the market without prompting the forced selling that could provoke a crisis, according to Robert Kavcic, a senior economist at Bank of Montreal.
The City of North Vancouver added 1,768 market-rental units, New Westminster 1,854 and Vancouver 12,750, placing them among the top three for total number of such units completed compared to the population. But these numbers still fall short of what’s needed, observers say.

For instance, from 2015 to 2021, Pitt Meadows added 13 market-rental units, West Vancouver 68, and Richmond 1,008, putting them at the bottom of the list for total number of such units completed compared to the population.
On Vancouver Island, the need for affordable housing has also been a focus of council’s attention in Duncan, where there is a homelessness crisis. Currently, 45 per cent of the population rents, while 55 per cent owns. However, over the past seven years, only one unit of market rental housing has been built.
China’s real estate firms are in financial distress. According to a list on GitHub, there are some 340 unfinished housing projects across 113 Chinese cities as of this week. A lot of them are concentrated in Zhengzhou. Chen has petitioned local officials, protested and then was detained for three days, as Marketplace reported. He even released a song about the injustice homebuyers face, but it changed nothing except that his song is now censored online. Like many people in China, Chen bought the twobedroom condo before full construction
“A few years ago, when a new project came on the market, it would be sold out immediately. Homebuyers felt they had to buy right away because prices might keep going up,” said first-time homebuyer Daisy Wang.

“The sharp rise in interest rates and [a] partial return to offices are evidently causing buyers to more significantly reprice properties away from Vancouver’s urban core,” Hogue said. “We expect activity to stay quiet in the months ahead in the entire area as the market continues to adjust to the new realities. Four years ago, Stewart, then an independent candidate, made similar campaign pledges for his 2018 general election campaign, including building 85,000 new homes over 10 years — which includes 25,000 units of nonprofit affordable rents, 25,000 units of market rents, and 35,000 condos and townhouses. Under the City of Vancouver’s existing 10year Housing Vancouver plan between 2018 and 2027, the city government is targeting to catalyze 72,000 homes. By 2021, the plan’s fourth year, the city has approved 52% of its target, or over 37,000 homes. It has exceeded more than 50% of its 10-year sub-targets of 12,000 units of public housing, 30,000 units of condos and 4,000 units of townhomes, but is below the midpoint mark for its sub-targets of 20,000 units of rental units and 6,000 townhouses/ caravans. In 2021, the city council and city employees approved 8,800 apartments.

“The sharp downturn seen in other major markets may be spreading to Montreal after all,” Hogue said.

Canada’s housing market is being “weighed down” by high interest rates. With further hikes on the way, the market is in for a chilly fall. In a report published earlier this week, Robert Hogue, assistant chief economist at RBC, said that the cooling trends that emerged in housing markets this past spring are still “firmly” in place across the country, with resale activity and prices falling further in August.

As in Toronto, Vancouver’s suburbs have seen the biggest price declines. Over the last three months, prices in Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, and Port Coquitlam have
fallen more than 10%. In parts of the Fraser Valley, which saw “massive” appreciation in 2021, they’re down more than 15%.
The city’s price correction also intensified, with the median price of detached homes down 4.5% from July and 9.5% from the peak. The cumulative decline in median condo prices was less pronounced, at 6.1%.
Hogue expects suburban detached homes, which have seen the biggest declines, to

“Rising interest rates are pushing many buyers to the sidelines and reducing the purchasing budget of others. Our expectations for the Bank of Canada to hike its policy rate to 3.5% by the fall will keep chilling markets in the months ahead,” Hogue said.

The majority of markets in Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec are now operating “well below” pre-pandemic levels, Hogue said, with price corrections further fuelled by easing demand-supply conditions and “souring” sentiments on behalf of buyers.
