All labour that benefits humanity has dignity – Martin Luther King
Health Canada set to announce approval of Moderna vaccine for Omicron variant: sources

Many people have suffered and sacrificed, many took the leadership role in asking for justice and fairness, many took to streets and organized demonstrations and parades to get a political will on their side. Unions started forming where workers with similar skills or education, came together to bring their problems and demands on the table for discussion. Labour laws and labour relations slowly got political approval. Work itself and the way we work has been changing ever since and it may seem that manual labour is much less than before since the machines have taken up immense load. This is true but then the work has become more demanding, more productivity, accuracy, precision and output is expected in every sector. With integration of technology, everyone is expected to be able to use the technology and multitask. To keep pace with the changing trends in work, we have to be clear in our thinking and our work ethics. Nothing works unless you work hard. Someone has to work, well let that someone be you. Miracle is not that we work for money but that we are happy to work. If we can strike this chord of work life balance, we will respect and honour all kinds of work in every sector. Have a wonderful and a fun filled holiday with family and friends. Cheers to all the hard working people who keep the integrity of the infrastructure of the world, the way we built it.
We’re the Hospital Employees’ Union, representing more than 50,000 health care workers across B.C. “What exactly is Labour Day, Mom?” My ever so curious 8 year old got me scratching my head. Just to test his thought process, I asked him what he thinks it can be. Not to my surprise he chuckled, “ it’s the weekend before the school starts, last day of summer vacation!” Spot on for all the students. For parents it is just getting back to routine. Everyone else marks this as the last weekend of summer and tries to fit in that last bit of summer fun into their busy schedule. Little do we think what is this holiday all about? After getting some help from Google, me and my eight year old son had some good conversation. I had to explain to him how all the things we see today around us were built by people. Railways, and railroads, vehicles and roads, and highways going thru mountains and rivers were all built by countless exhausting labour of hard working men, less than 200 years ago. Industrial revolution had changed the way people made things, capitalist economies mass manufactured goods. All this needed people to work for long hours and never got time to spend with their families. The working conditions were poor and safety of workers was never thought of. All the hard work was done by poor labourers, and businessmen reaped the profit. They were also being exploited and fired for unjust reasons, wrong people were being promoted and a fair wages was never a consideration. Long hours of work was expected even in worst of weather. There was no respect and dignity given to these hard working people. All this was too much for my son to grasp and process but he couldn’t help remarking, “that’s not fair. Didn’t they do anything?” I continued to explain to him that “Whenever the exploitation reaches to unbearable heights the consequence is a revolution.”

Just five years after Canadian federation, first labour day came into being on 15 April 1872 when Toronto trades assembly organized country’s first significant work demonstration. The event took on a life of its own, attracting many other union groups gaining the momentum year after year sowing the seeds of a paid holiday. Inspired by Canada, USA counterparts started similar demonstrations and both the countries finally legalized nationwide paid holiday for all workers and marked it to be the first weekend of September since 1894. Rest of the world commemorates workers day on 1 May and some countries have their own different dates. Whenever it is celebrated, the purpose is the same, to respect, appreciate and honour the dignity of labour in our society at large. Eight hour work day, five days a week, paid holidays, vacations, medical benefits, retirement benefits that we see today as remuneration for our work, we take it for granted and think this is how it would have been always but it did not come out of goodwill of owners or businessmen.

Health Canada will announce on Thursday that it has approved an updated COVID-19 vaccine targeting the Omicron variant, sources tell Radio-Canada and CBC. Both Pfizer and rival Moderna filed applications for vaccine approval. Sources, including one senior government official, said that the Moderna vaccine is the one receiving approval on Thursday.
In fact while trying to explain to him, I came across some interesting facts. And it got me thinking too. Workers started to form groups and protest to ask for shorter working week. To form unions and to strike were illegal in those days.
3Saturday, September 3, 2022 LOCAL / NATIONAL

The updated vaccine is a combination of two strains, also known as “bivalent” shots, that target both the original coronavirus and the Omicron variant BA.1. While they do not directly target the dominant circulating Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5, they are expected to provide significant and durable protection against them according to Health Canada. On Wednesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized its first update to COVID-19 vaccines that target BA.4 and BA.5; doses could roll out within days. Dr. Supriya Sharma, chief medical adviser at Health Canada, and Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Howard Njoo will attend a morning technical briefing for media at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday. That will be followed by a news conference with Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos at 2 p.m. ET. Moderna announced last week that it will supply 12 million doses of its COVID-19 shot adapted to target the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Statistics Canada is reminding Canadians every month this year how painful their trips to the grocery store are. The retail inflation rate is at an astonishing 9.9 per cent, its highest point since 1981. And food inflation has exceeded the general rate since last December, which is why food prices are on everyone’s mind. Allegations of “greedflation” are rampant, accusing the industry of gouging consumers stressed by an increasingly higher cost of living. We’re seeing signs, though, that things are improving. Calmer seas are ahead as we head to autumn. Food inflation is often about context. In July 1978, while inflation was at 9.4 per cent, food prices were increasing year-to-year by a whopping 20.2 per cent. That’s by far the largest difference we’ve seen in the last 50 years. Things were out of control. Canada’s situation is nowhere near what it was in 1978 or what it is elsewhere. In the United States, food inflation at grocery stores is above 13 per cent, and the United Kingdom’s food inflation rate in July was 12.7 per cent, again much higher than ours. The good news is that our food inflation appears to have peaked or is at least under control, for now. Since April, our overall food inflation rate – 9.2 per cent with retail and service combined – hasn’t reached 10 per cent. The highest month-to-month jump this year was in January, at 1.4 per cent. That was the highest month-to-month jump since 2016. In June, it was 0.1 per cent. July, however, saw another jump at 0.9 per cent. But since 2011, we’ve seen month-to-month increases exceeding 0.9 per cent a total of just 12 times. The numbers are telling us that extreme volatility affecting food prices may be behind us. The impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on commodity prices, which triggered a new inflationary cycle, has been mostly absorbed by food supply chains. Commodity prices peaked on May 17 and have dropped significantly since. Supply chains are also dealing with more predictable conditions related to COVID-19 protocols. As governments continue to keep people safe, COVID-related rules and conditions are much more foreseeable, which is really helping the food industry, service and retail. As consumers, we should expect more rebates, discounted products and loss leaders. It’s easier to offer deals when market conditions are more stable.

Consecutive last-minute lockdowns took their toll and made life a nightmare for many in the food industry. There are, however, some trouble spots at the grocery store. The first is dairy, with the Canadian Dairy Commission recommending a second unprecedented increase of 2.5 per cent to start on Sept. 1. Dairy farmers are getting 11 per cent more for their milk and butterfat than in February. It’s great for our farmers, but retail dairy prices have skyrocketed. Since February, according to BetterCart Analytics, fluid milk prices have increased by about 25 per cent. Yogurt, cheese, sour cream and ice cream are all much higher since February, and we expect another jump in the weeks to come as kids go back to school. It couldn’t happen at a worse time.

Canada authorized Moderna Inc’s bivalent COVID-19 shots for adults on Thursday, in the country’s first approval of a vaccine adapted for the highly contagious Omicron variant of the coronavirus. COVID vaccines were originally developed to target the coronavirus strain first detected in China in 2019. Several new variants have since been detected, with Omicron considered one of the most contagious.
Horgan said the province was working with firefighters and the paramedics union to ensure first responders had adequate training and were able to act quickly during what he called “extraordinarily challenging times.” “We do not have enough people to provide the services that British Columbians have come to expect and the only way to do that is to train more,” he said. Existing staff would also have to be encouraged “to carry on working beyondwhentheywouldlike,”hesaid.
He scanned his ticket a total of eight times to confirm his win and says at this point he doesn’t have any plans for his windfall. “I am a simple man; I live life peacefully,” Chahal added.
The new so-called bivalent shots target two variants of the coronavirus. Moderna’s bivalent vaccine approved by Health Canada targets BA.1 version of Omicron and the original 2019 virus. Moderna’s bivalent Spikevax booster was found to be safe and effective in Health Canada’s review, the health authority said in a statement.

He said the province was “conscious” of the ambulance shortage and had added ground and air transportation options in remote locations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The United States authorized boosters from Pfizer/ BioNTech and Moderna that were retooled to target Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants for everyone aged 12 and older on Wednesday. The European Union’s drug regulator also backed two bivalent vaccine boosters for the same age group on Thursday. read more Health Canada was reviewing a bivalent vaccine made by Pfizer and BioNTech, chief medical adviser to the federal health ministry, Supriya Sharma, said at a briefing.
The vaccine dose was also found to generate a “good immune response” against the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants, Health Canada added. Ahead of an anticipated rise in COVID and other seasonal respiratory illnesses with the arrival of colder winter weather, health authorities in Europe and North America have started to recommend bivalent vaccines, which are also made by Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) and BioNTech (22UAy.DE).
Alberta to use $13.2B budget windfall to pay down debt, put cash in piggy bank

Peter Milobar, the Kamloops-North Thompson MLA who represents Barriere and is the Opposition BC Liberal finance critic, said the infant’s death was a tragedy that highlighted the need for more ambulances across the province.

An Edmonton man has a reason to celebrate after winning a Lotto 6/49 top prize; however, he said he has no plans with his massive winnings. During the July 30 draw, Pritpal Chahal discovered he had won $17,183,706.90.

Premier John Horgan cites ambulance ‘investment’ as he addresses infant death

“I was confused and in disbelief,” Chahal said in a Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) news release. “At first, I needed to count the numbers.”

Premier John Horgan said he was heartbroken by the recent death of an infant while waiting for an ambulance in Barriere, B.C., adding his government had made a “significant investment” in rural and remote medical transport. “My heart goes out to the family who are grieving the loss of a child,” he said of the baby who died Thursday in the central B.C. community.
Chahal checked his ticket in a local store and couldn’t believe his eyes when he scanned it on the self-checker.

Alberta’s finance minister says the government is going to use this year’s projected windfall budget surplus to pay down debt and put some cash in its piggy bank.
Jason Nixon says the plan is to make a $13.4-billion repayment on the provincial debt and add almost $3 billion to the Heritage Savings Trust Fund. “We remain focused on using this surplus wisely to benefit Albertans today and tomorrow, paying down debt and reducing the amount of debt each Albertan carries,” Nixon told a news conference Wednesday. Nixon made the comments as he revealed details of the first-quarter budget numbers for the 2022 fiscal year. On Tuesday, Premier Jason Kenney announced the forecast for this year’s budget is no longer expected to be $511 million but $13.2 billion. If the forecast holds until the end of the fiscal year on March 31, Alberta will reduce its taxpayer-supported debt to just under $80 billion — about $15 billion less than projected in February’s budget.

say the confusion arises because some of these are outside the control line, which is not a recognized international border. Still, this isn’t a cricket match to keep score. It’s something much more serious.

The catastrophic floods in Pakistan over the past two days have revealed that country’s vulnerability to a hot summer – this year saw a heat wave in Pakistan and India in May – resulting in increased volume of glacier runoff due to melting ice. , followed by extreme monsoon rains. At least 1,000 people have already died in Pakistan as a result of floods already described as once-in-a-lifetime; millions are displaced. The flash floods in large parts of the country, from north to south, with most rivers including the Indus, Kabul and Swat gaining momentum.

Glacial melt puts Pakistan at high risk of recent flooding of retreat related to the climate crisis. “Glacier meltwater is increasing. When there is heavy precipitation and warming, glacial meltwater contributes to runoff. This problem will also be felt in India when melting glaciers contribute to more runoff and flooding,” explains R Krishnan, director of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune, specializing in climate modeling, global and monsoon hydrological cycle changes. . The Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region covers approximately 3,500 km in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan. But India’s vulnerability to glacial flooding is not as high as Pakistan’s, added Anil Kulkarni, a glaciologist and leading scientist at the Divecha Center for Climate Change. “I would say India is not as vulnerable as Pakistan to flooding from glacial melt. Glacier stored water in Indus Basin is about 2103 cubic km. Of this, about 95% is stored in the western basin allocated to Pakistan. Glacier mass loss is high in the Satlej and Beas basins. In the Ganga and Brahmaputra river basins in India, the contribution of glaciers to the discharge of streams is relatively smaller. It is about 2025% compared to 60% in the Indus Basin. That is why Pakistan may be more vulnerable.” But he admitted that “glaciers on both sides are seeing rapid mass loss.” Kulkarni believes that India needs to prepare for the challenges posed by the rapid melting of glaciers: “Reduction (in the long term) of river runoff; changes in the seasonality of water availability in glacierfed rivers; drying Himalayan springs; flash flooding due to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs); and new geopolitical challenges among several other concerns.”

Surrey RCMP and paramedics were called to a home on 61 Avenue near 141 Street just before 2 p.m., and arrived to find Amar with critical injuries. Despite lifesaving efforts, he died at the scene. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said a suspect was arrested at the scene, who remains in custody. He has not been publicly identified, as he has not been formally charged. “This was an isolated incident between two neighbours,” IHIT Sgt. Timothy Pierotti said in a media release. “Tragically this situation escalated to a point where a life was taken.” Amar had produced several documentaries and short films, with a focus on guns and gangs and Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. His 2009 documentary A Warrior’s Religion interviewed several Metro Vancouver gangsters, including Bal Buttar who was paralyzed and left blind in a shooting by a rival gangster. In 2015, during another wave of gang violence, he organized a candlelight peace march. “I beg of you to put down your weapons and make better positive life choices,” he said in a CKNW radio interview at the time. “At the end of the day, if something happens to you, be it death or jail, you’re going to hurt your family, if not worse at the end of the day.” Karen Sidhu, executive director of the Surrey Anti Crime Society, said Amar had a “heart of gold.” “Beyond the films, his passion was just amazing, it was his goal in life was to try and help kids steer away from the life of gangs,” she said. “He was instrumental in turning some of the kids’ lives around. And the situation now where he was killed — we’re just in a state of shock that he is no longer with us.” Amar was also linked at one point to a project to make a film about Maple Batalia, the young Simon Fraser University student killed at the Surrey campus. Witnesses are being urged to call the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

The cause of the flooding was extreme rain in recent days from a well-marked low pressure area that formed over the Bay of Bengal on Aug. 19 and moved through central India into Pakistan. But as Pakistan’s climate change minister Sherry Rehman told The Guardian, higher temperatures caused glaciers in the north of the country to melt faster, amplifying the rain’s impact. She added that Pakistan was experiencing a “serious climate catastrophe, one of the worst in the decade”.

More details were revealed about the upcoming criminal trial of Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum at a pre-trial conference Wednesday. McCallum, who did not attend the hearing, has been charged with public mischief over claims he made about being struck by a car in the parking lot of a SaveOn-Foods on Sept. 4, 2021. He has accused Debi Johnstone of running over his foot as she was collecting signatures against the city’s transition to a municipal police force. In the Surrey Provincial Court, special prosecutor Richard Fowler outlined the Crown’s case against McCallum, saying the bulk of the evidence will be CCTV footage from various locations. Other key evidence will include the mayor’s statement to Surrey RCMP, testimony from Johnstone, and potential testimony from an expert witness. Further details from the pre-trial conference are protected under a publication ban.

Earlier this year, Global News reported details contained in freshly unsealed court documents related to McCallum’s public mischief charge. In the Information To Obtain (ITO) documents, which were the basis for police to get search warrants, investigators stated, in part, that the mayor “provided a version of events that has been partially disproved based on the statement provided (by the driver) … and the video surveillance obtained from the Save-On-Foods.” Mayor McCallum’s five-day trial is set to begin Oct. 31.His legal bills continue to be paid by Surrey taxpayers. The footage shows an RCMP officer kneeling on Lasuik’s neck and placing the man’s face against the ground. The officer does not appear to adjust his knee, nor the pressure, despite repeated pleas from the man. Although the arrest happened on Aug. 1, 2019, the RCMP did not notify the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba about it until more than two years later, on Aug. 11, 2021, after the video was entered as evidence during the arrested man’s trial.
Jane MacLatchy, who was then commanding officer of the Manitoba RCMP, said the force learned about the events from a Winnipeg Free Press report on the trial, after which the RCMP reported the allegations to the IIU, which investigates serious incidents involving police.
At one point in the video recorded by Lasuik’s father, the officer dismisses Lasuik’s pleas because he could still speak. Visit our Website www.theasianstar.com
A defective truck and trailer caught by police three times in three different cities points to the importance of a coordinated regional approach to commercial vehicle enforcement, according to one Burnaby Mountie. Const. Kevin Connolly, the officer who heads up commercial vehicle inspections and enforcement in Burnaby, was in Delta last Wednesday as part of a joint forces enforcement blitz when he encountered a truck and trailer he’d seen before. “The truck had defective brakes, so I placed the truck out of service. It also had insecure cargo and insecure dangerous goods,” Connolly told the NOW. The trailer had problems too, according to Connolly. Custom-built ramps blocked the brake lights and turn signals, so drivers behind the trailer wouldn’t be warned before the vehicle stopped or turned.

‘Let me breathe’
A Manitoba RCMP officer has been charged following a 2019 arrest during which a Mountie pressed his knee on the neck of a man at Winnipeg’s airport, while the man repeatedly cried “I can’t breathe.”
Manitoba’s police watchdog said in a news release on Monday that there are reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred.

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a 28-year-old man wanted for aggravated assault and firearms offences who missed his court date and is considered armed and dangerous. Tevain Lloyd was picked up in Vancouver on April 19 on a warrant related to a shooting. He was released a week later with conditions and was due to appear in court Aug. 4. Earlier this month, the Hong Kong security bureau announced it was charging Ho — a long-time Canadian citizen and retired newspaper editor ‚ and two U.S. residents with breach of the security law’s “subversion” section. Their offence was to spearhead a Torontobased plan to set up a sort of parliament in exile for Hong Kong, chosen by online elections involving residents of the enclave and its diaspora in other countries.
Connolly ordered the truck and trailer out of service, telling the driver they wouldn’t be allowed back on the road until the problems were fixed. The trailer was towed, but because the driver didn’t want the truck towed, he called in a mechanic who spent much of the day fixing it at the scene, according to Connolly. Connolly said the same driver had been ordered to fix problems with the truck and trailer before – first during an enforcement blitz in Burnaby and then one in Surrey. “The driver did not comply,” Connolly said. Multiple police agencies around the Lower Mainland coordinate joint commercial vehicle enforcements around the region, and Connolly said the defective truck and trailer are a good example

A faster-than-expected economic recovery following the COVID pandemic delivered the province a healthy $1.3-billion surplus for the 2021-22 fiscal year, according to the government’s public accounts released Tuesday. Finance Minister Selina Robinson said more tax revenue thanks to a booming post-pandemic economy, a one-time boost from the federal government for COVID and natural disasters, higher natural resource revenues, and higher profits from Crown corporations such as ICBC and B.C. Lottery Corp. helped the province get back in the black following a $9.7-billion deficit projected in the 2021 budget. That budget, released in April 2021 and the first since the start of the pandemic, came at a time when COVID vaccines were not widely available, gatherings were still limited, and public health orders were still causing major uncertainties for businesses. It was also before global inflation and the war in Ukraine sent gas and food prices soaring. Given those circumstances, Robinson said, “fiscal responsibility meant forecasting for the worst and striving for the best when it comes to protecting people’s health and livelihoods while building a bridge to economic recovery.” The government brought in $13.5 billion in revenue, half of which can be attributed to taxes like the PST, income taxes and the property transfer tax boosted by soaring house prices.
Fifty years ago, for example, the late great poet Earle Birney described Canada as teetering on tiptoe, with provinces like “ten brittle legs, no two together.” It is still kind of like that, as a new poll illustrates. Interprovincial affection is tricky to measure, likewise resentment, but the poll by Leger for Postmedia suggests Birney’s home province of British Columbia (although he was born in Calgary) is the favoured child of Confederation, at least among the others. It was not even close. Second place Alberta got fewer than half of B.C.’s votes. Worryingly, from a national unity perspective, Canada’s least favourite province is Québec, the poll found. It was also a landslide result. Asked to name their favourite province other than their own, a solid plurality of 30 per cent said B.C. With its geography from the sea to the mountains, and a reputation among Canadian tourists as a blissful Lotusland, B.C. beat out Alberta at 12 per cent, Ontario and Nova Scotia at 10 per cent, and in further descending order: Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, Saskatchewan, and the rest. The three territories were included, but barely registered as favourites. “When we think of favourites, we gravitate to the scenic side,” said Andrew Enns, the Manitoba-based executive vice president of Leger. (“Hey, we’re boring, people perceive things as boring,” he said of his own home province, which was in the absolute basement of the favourite province rankings, with one per cent of the votes, behind even Yukon at two per cent.) This view, that Canada’s overall preference for B.C. is more about the geography than the people, is supported by a secondary question asking respondents to rank their reasons for choosing a favourite.
Annamie Paul, who quit after the election, said leading the party was one of the worst experiences of her life. At her campaign launch in B-C yesterday, May acknowledged the Greens have been in “disarray,” and said she bears some responsibility.

Auditor general Michael Pickup’s office says there were three departures from generally accepted accounting principles in the books that were released Tuesday, including the way B.C. records payments from other governments and non-government sources. It says if the financial statements followed Canadian Public Sector Accounting Standards, the 2021-22 surplus would have been $6.48 billion higher, and liabilities would have been lower by the same amount.
“It does not accurately reflect how they’ve structured the agreement and the underlying transaction,” says Pickup.
BC is Canada’s favourite province, but not because of the people, poll finds Provinces are a bit like siblings. Each has a favourite, and a least favourite, and the feeling is not always mutual. The rest of the world sees a family, but inside, the members are divided by their own affections and resentments.
A B.C. judge has frozen the assets of a former Vancouver Canucks draft pick who is being sued over allegations he defrauded a realtor of more than $2.8 million. Lawsuit states Prab Rai, a fifthround pick in the 2008 NHL draft, held himself out to be a successful and wealthy business person. Harpreet Singh Khela, the realtor, claims that Prab Rai, a fifthround pick in the 2008 NHL draft, held himself out to be a successful and wealthy business person, purporting to have important connections with prominent local and international business people and retired hockey players. He says that Rai provided to him phoney emails, financial statements, agreements and documents from those prominent business people and retired professional hockey players in order to fraudulently induce him to transfer more than $2.8 million for real estate developments and other investments.

Another alleged scheme involved Rai telling Khela that a prominent former Canuck player was interested in purchasing commercial real estate located in Alberta that Khela held shares in. Khela claims that starting in 2017 and continuing to about October 2020, Rai told him that they had earned significant profits from their purported ventures and then concealed the fraud by telling him a false story that the profits had been frozen by the U.S. government and were unavailable.

B.C. Emergency Health Services is reviewing a case in which an eight-monthold in Barriere went into cardiac arrest and died before an ambulance could arrive. The tragedy has angered the town’s mayor who said it is not the first time gaps in the ambulance service have put people at risk. The ambulance service confirmed it received a call to respond to a patient at a home in Barriere on Thursday. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and the community at this heartbreaking loss,” the organization said in a statement Monday. “The closest available ambulance was immediately dispatched, and local firefighters were requested to assist.” The ambulance service did not say how much time passed between the 911 call and paramedics’ arrival, or where the closest available ambulance was at the time. Such details have been provided in other incidents where ambulance response time was a concern, but an explanation isn’t being released in this case. Judge freezes assets of former Canuck draft pick facing $2.8 million fraud allegation
The alleged schemes included a San Diego development property, a Tim Hortons franchise, and the purchase of the Sutton Hotel in Vancouver. Khela claims that Rai convinced him to advance $2.4 million as a deposit to buy the hotel for $200 million.
He claimed that in October 2020, Khela was told that Rai had been kidnapped on his way to the airport, beaten and robbed of his hard drive, which contained all of his bank account information, and that all of his money was gone. Following the “fantastical’” kidnapping story, Khela says he began to investigate his business dealings with Rai and discovered the alleged fraud. “Prab Rai’s stories to Khela about the profits earned by their business ventures were a lie. There are no profits, and there were no IRS investigations or frozen accounts,” says the lawsuit.

“He has cut down trees, paved and poured a concrete pad on part of the property, erected fences, deposited fill, and moved earth. He has enlarged the buildings, converting the shed into a living unit. Inside both buildings the work has included drywalling, electrical work and plumbing. He has deposited materials on the banks of Enver Creek, some of which has fallen into the creek,” Gomery summarized. Singh was issued stop-work orders and an interim injunction to vacate his home on Sept. 22, 2021. However, he disregarded those orders and re-occupied the home without an occupancy permit, which led to his arrest for breach of the injunction. “He deliberately chose not to comply with his obligations, probably in the hope that he could get away with non-compliance by presenting the City with a fait accompli or possibly because he simply could not conceive that his actions would have consequences,” stated Gomery. It was found by the judge Singh violated six municipal bylaws, many of them repeatedly. The evidence documents 20 attendances by city officials at the property between Aug. 4, 2021, and April 29, 2022, stated Gomery. As an example of Singh’s “flagrant” behaviour, is the instance he poured concrete on Nov. 17, 2021, mere hours after being told not to by a city official.
A Surrey man who repeatedly violated numerous municipal bylaws, including those intended to protect a salmonbearing stream, has been ordered to conduct extensive remediation work. In his June 24 ruling, B.C. Supreme Court Judge Geoffrey Gomery described that Amrik Singh has acted in an “atrocious” manner since purchasing his home at 14485 82A Ave. next to Enver Creek in July 2021. Gomery found Singh undertook extensive landscaping and renovations to the $1.3 million-assessed home and shed, including clear-cutting much of the property, without permits from the City of Surrey.

My perception of failure has changed in 40s

Canada’s economy is still very much overly dependent on real estate, but it’s no longer at its worst. Back in Q1 2021, the ratio peaked at a whopping 10.3 points — a mindblowing share of the economy. Over 1 in 10 GDP dollars were generated from residential investment. It was a share rarely seen in an advanced economy, if ever.
There were countdowns, livestreams, and even viewing parties. Photographers camped outdoors for hours to get the perfect shot.
14 Saturday, September 3, 2022 Canada’s economy is less reliant on real estate, but still dangerously dependent. Statistics Canada (Stat Can) data shows residential investment fell as a share of gross domestic product (GDP) in Q2 2022. After the interest rate cuts in 2020, residential investment soared to over a tenth of GDP. It’s since fallen sharply, but remains much higher than the US at its peak bubble. Residential Investment Residential investment is real estate’s most direct contribution to the economy. It includes home construction, renovations, and ownership transfer costs. It’s a nice chunk of the contributions of real estate investment to the economy, but far from all. Areas like finance and insurance are real estate-driven, but not included in residential investment. Neither is spending on minor renovations, such as paint. Canadian Residential Investment Falls To Less Than 9% of GDP Canadian residential investment represented a smaller share of GDP last quarter. The segment was 8.7% of GDP in Q2 2022, down 1.1 point from the previous quarter and 1.5 points lower than last year. If you didn’t catch it, the past year has seen two-thirds of the decline in the most recent quarter. It was the first full quarter since interest rates climbed.

Canada’s Economy Is Still More Dependent On Housing Than The US In 2006 Residential investment is now at the lowest share of GDP since Q2 2020, but still has a long way to go.
“Notwithstanding the spectacle of seeing the Supertech Twin Towers go down, the demolition strikes at the heart of builder-bureaucrat-politician nexus, which first encroaches, then regularises illegal constructions, to the detriment of law abiding citizens,” tweeted Amit Malviya, an Indian politician who serves as the national convener of the IT cell of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Officials placed 3,700 kg of explosives in the towers, which had never been occupied but were worth $87.5 million or INR 7 billion. Officials also evacuated thousands of residents from the vicinity.
India blew up apartments worth $87 Million to send a message
On Sunday, thousands in India turned up in Noida city’s Sector 93A, some 50 kilometres from the capital New Delhi, while millions were glued to their TV screens, as two mammoth buildings –nicknamed the “Twin Towers” – exploded. The dramatic buildup and explosion of the nearly 100-metre towers – India’s tallest structures to be demolished – is being lauded as a rare success for activists against powerful and wealthy builders who bend local laws and allegedly pay off officials to construct illegally. A group of four elderly men took the real estate developer Supertech Limited to court for illegal construction nine years ago. India, the world’s largest democracy, ranks high on the global corruption index. The country’s builder mafias are often blamed for risky constructions that end up costing lives. Government officials have been accused of enabling such illegal deals. “This is a victory for all middle-class people who don’t suffer injustice in silence,” 80-year-old Uday Tewatiya, one of the men who led the court case, told the media last year when the verdict to demolish the buildings came out. “Big builders will now think 100 times before conning common people.”

The nuance is that housing costs are both a reflection and a cause of how people rank based on their education, Florida said. “And that is what really matters. But the result is the same: fewer children.” Florida added that other demographic changes, such as immigration, could also be at play. In the past, immigration may have contributed to keeping BC’s fertility higher with some immigrants tending to marry younger and have more children. But now it is more likely that they will go to other provinces because of the high cost of housing. Andy Yan, director of the Simon Fraser University City Program, said a lack of better-paying, quality jobs and an aging population are also factors behind BC’s falling fertility rate.

Photo by NICK PROCAYLO /PNG files However, the big caveat he and others add is that all other things are never created equal. “Housing costs have an effect on having children. Generally speaking, people have fewer children in the more expensive metropolitan areas. Our own research on very detailed Swedish data concludes that this is the case,” said Richard Florida, a professor at the University of Toronto School of Cities and the Rotman School of Management. He and two other researchers, Charlotta Mellander and Karen King, looked at how housing costs and self-employment affected fertility in a paper 2021. It examined both the birth rate and the delay in the age at which people have children. Using detailed panel data covering all Swedish people in their prime childbearing years over the 10-year period between 2007 and 2016, he found that the probability of having a child is affected negatively by rising housing costs and positively. for selfemployment. “But the connection is not that direct. In general, the more expensive metropolitan areas have more educated populations. It is a major factor as to why they are so expensive in the first place. More educated people marry later and this delays having children. It also means there is less time to have children.”
Canada’s economy still 30% more dependent on real estate than the US in 2006 BC now has the lowest fertility rate in Canada, Home prices are (partly) to blame British Columbia now has the lowest fertility rate in Canada, according to new data, but the reasons behind the trend aren’t so straightforward. Researchers say one of the contributing factors is lack of access to affordable housing. But other reasons include evolving values and changing demographics. Statistics Canada said in a recent report about population growth that it’s been observing falling fertility rates for about 13 years. In the early 1990s, B.C.’s fertility rate sat more “middle of the pack” and was higher than that in Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Quebec, according to Statistics Canada numbers cited by Vancouver data scientist Jens von Bergmann. It’s through the early 2000s when the rate in B.C. starts to fall lower than in other provinces, and by 2015 it starts sitting in last place compared to other provinces and now is pulling comparatively even lower. In 2020, the fertility rate in BC dropped to 1.17 children per woman and the next lowest in Nova Scotia was 1.24. While the national fertility rate fell about 16 percent from 1.68 in 2009 to 1.4 in 2020, it fell more steeply in BC by about 22 percent from 1.47 in 2009 to 1.17 in 2020. . Von Bergmann and others say that untangling the factors is complex. “High (housing) prices and rents make it difficult for young people to form their own homes and their own families, which, all else being equal, tends to delay having children. And comparing, for example, household formation rates over time, we can see the divergence between Montreal and the higher priced markets of Vancouver and Toronto,” he said. “High (housing) prices and rents make it difficult for young people to form their own homes and their own families…”
Shovels are set to hit the ground next spring on a 10-year project to build eight townhouses and nine apartment buildings in an area described as “country in the city.” But the project in Fredericton’s southwest corner has been met by opposition from neighbours who fear the development will make Serenity Lane dangerous to walk along and create a decade of traffic headaches during the construction period. “We understand Fredericton needs rental housing, as do most cities in Canada, and we’re all for that,” said Rob Horton, a resident on Red Maple Court, which runs off from Serenity Lane. “But we would like to have this development done in a way that provides a safe neighborhood for us, and we don’t see that that’s what’s going to happen,” Horton said. “We see a lot of large trucks going up and down the street and we have 20 children that live on this street that use Serenity Lane as they’re walking — they walk their dogs, they bicycle, and we’re very concerned for their safety as well as our safety as adults.” In June, Fredericton councillors agreed to rezone a 10-hectare piece of land and grant building height variances to let Gorham Real Estate construct the buildings at 150-198 Serenity Lane. They signed off on it following recommendations from city staff as well as members of the city’s planning advisory committee.
Canada set for ‘unprecedented’ home price drop by early 2023: TD Bank Federal govt promises to build 17,000 homes, thousands affordable

582-unit apartment ‘community’ set for construction, but not without opposition

Tuesday’s announcement will see the Rapid Housing Initiative extended for a third round to build 4,500 affordable housing units, some of which will be part of women-focused housing and homelessness projects. The program was launched in 2020 and provides funding to allow the rapid construction of new housing and the purchase of existing buildings to be turned into affordable housing units.
The federal government says it will spend more than $2 billion to build 17,000 homes, including thousands of affordable units. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement Tuesday in Kitchener, Ont., alongside Housing Minister Ahmed Hussen, after meeting with local politicians, housing advocates and other stakeholders. Trudeau said housing prices are rising across the country, and many Canadians are worried about being able to afford a place to live, whether they’re renting or looking to buy a home. “When people have stable homes, they can build more stable lives. They can participate and create their communities, they can contribute their skills to businesses and organizations in our economy, and we all benefit from that,” he said.
TD’s report follows a projection from Desjardins earlier this month, which forecast a drop in prices of nearly 25 per cent by the end of 2023.

Trudeau said the first two rounds are expected to create 10,000 units, more than the 7,500 initially planned. At least another 10,800 homes will be built through the Affordable Housing Innovation Fund, 6,000 of which will be affordable units.
A report by TD Bank suggests the average price of a home in Canada could fall 20 to 25 per cent from its peak seen earlier this year to the first quarter of 2023. The report also estimates the number of home sales will fall 35 per cent over the same time period. TD economist Rishi Sondhi says the projected price drop represents decline”“unprecedentedanatleastgoing as far back as the late 1980s, when the data began, but it follows an unequally unprecedented rise during the pandemic. The report notes the drop in national home prices would only partially retrace the 46 per cent gain over the course of the pandemic. As such, Sondhi writes that the forecast can be more aptly described as a recalibration of the market, instead of something more severe. Long term, TD remains more positive on the outlook for housing because it says population growth should remain demandfundamentalunderpinninghealthy, forhousing.

India’s GDP grew 13.5% in the AprilJune quarter from a year ago, according to data released on Wednesday (Aug. 31), registering its fastest annual expansion in a year. This was lower than the 16.2% growth predicted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) earlier this month. But the numbers come with a caveat. Economists believe that a “base effect” from the April-June quarter in 2021 is manifesting itself. Economic activity in that quarter last year had slowed considerably, when thousands of Indians died in a devastating second wave of covid-19. The new figures are a sharp improvement upon that low base. “The strong June-quarter real GDP growth...is essentially a reflection of a rather low statistical base effect and also a reflection of pent-up demand,” Kunal Kundu, an economist at Societe Generale, told Reuters. India’s recovery is not broad-based Looking at the real GDP levels, the economy grew only 3.8% from the corresponding quarter in 2019-20, if one writes off the two pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. Apart from the implications of the pandemic, there is a distinct expansion in demand for contact-intensive services such as the travel and tourism sector.

Tejinder of Union City was charged with a hate crime in violation of civil rights, assault and disturbing the peace by Indian-American racially abused by compatriot offensive language, the Fremont Police Department said. Jayaraman recorded the tirade, which lasted over eight minutes, on his phone. Tejinder appeared to spit at Jayaraman twice in the video. The Fremont police are still investigating. Police chief Sean Washington addressed the community on social media. He wrote: “We take hate incidents and hate crimes seriously, and understand the significant impact they have. These incidents are despicable. We are here to protect all community members, regardless of their gender, race, nationality, religion, and other differences.”
India’s latest GDP numbers are deceptively high
An Indian-American man has been racially abused by a compatriot in the US state of California who hurled racist slurs that he is a “dirty Hindu” and a “disgusting dog”, days after another hate crime was reported against four women from the community in Texas. Krishnan Jayaraman was verbally attacked by Tejinder Singh (37) in the Taco Bell at Grimmer Boulevard in Fremont, California, on August 21, NBC News reported on Wednesday.

India’s economy is certainly growing. But the absolute numbers do not show the whole picture.

His remarks came after a storm of criticism over the Portuguese government’s handling of staff shortages in maternity units, by temporarily closing some of them and forcing pregnant women to undergo risky transfers between hospitals.

The 34-year-old Indian woman reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest during an ambulance transfer from Santa Maria hospital, which had no vacancies in the neonatology service, to another hospital in the capital. It follows a string of incidents this summer that critics blame on a staffing crisis across Portuguese natal units, the BBC reported on Wednesday.
Portugal health minister quits after pregnant Indian woman dies; probe ordered The National Investigation Agency (NIA) declared Rs 25 lakh reward on underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. The probe agency said that whosoever will provide information to it about Dawood shall be rewarded.
Temido had been the health minister since 2018, and is credited with steering Portugal through the OVID-19 pandemic. But on Tuesday, the government said in a statement that Temido had “realised that she no longer had the conditions to remain in office”.
The NIA has also declared a reward of Rs 20 lakh on Chhota Shakeel and Rs 15 lakh reward on Anis Abrahim, aides of Dawood.
Portugal’s Prime Minister Antonio Costa said the woman’s death was “the last straw” that led to Temido’s resignation, the report quoted Portugal’s Lusa news agency as saying. “I am grateful for all the work carried out by Dr. Marta Temido, especially in the exceptional period of combating the COVID19 pandemic.
“NIA has declared reward of Rs 15 lakh each on Dawood’s other aides Javed Chikna and Tiger Memon, wanted accused in Mumbai serial blasts,” said an official. The NIA has said that Dawood is funding terror outfits to carry out terrorrelated activities across India. The probe agency said that Dawood is working with LeT and Jaish-eMohammed, the international terrorist organisations. In February, the NIA had lodged a fresh case against Dawood.
The tragic death of a pregnant Indian woman in Portugal while being shifted between crisis-hit hospitals here has led to the resignation of the country’s health minister Marta Temido while authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Local media reported that the pregnant tourist died while being moved from Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital - the largest in Portugal - because its neonatology unit was full.

Students tied their teachers to a tree and ‘beat’ them after receiving bad grades. Look, we’ve all received a grade we didn’t like, but that’s no excuse for tying someone up. However, some students at Scheduled Tribe residential school in Dumka, Jharkhand, eastern India still thought that would be a good idea. The incident took place Monday, 29 August, with footage being released of three men, supposedly school teachers, tied to a tree with red rope.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mangaluru on September 2, according to Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, he said that Mr. Modi will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate projects worth ₹1,200 crore of New Mangaluru Port Authority (NMPA) on the occasion. He will arrive here by about 3.15 p.m. from Kochi and attend an official function from 4.15 p.m. to 5 p.m. The venue of the function is yet to be finalised, Mr. Kateel said.
AAP MLA Baljinder Kaur being slapped by husband goes viral Questions raised over the timing of the release of July 10 video ahead of CM Bhagwant Mann’s visit to Talwandi Sabo on Friday. A day before Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s visit to Talwandi Sabo, a two-month-old video showing AAP Talwandi Sabo MLA Baljinder Kaur being abused by her husband has gone viral on social media.

Over the past few weeks, there have been reports that the government is planning on banning Chinese companies from the budget smartphone segment. This is reportedly aimed at boosting domestic companies as Chinese companies dominate the Indian smartphone segment. Experts have been sceptical about how beneficial this will be as Chinese smartphone makers account for nearly 80% of the market share in the budget segment, and they believe domestic companies may not be able to fill the void left by the Chinese smartphone makers.
If anyone’s not seen that movie, give it a watch, it’s ridiculously creepy. Even so, this clip is pretty unsettling as one of the kids can be heard shouting: “I want to make this video viral… these people were only involved, the public should know.”

During the 45th annual general meeting of Reliance Industries, Mukesh Ambani also announced that the company’s telecom arm, Reliance Jio, is working with Google to develop affordable 5G smartphones. As domestic companies may not be able to meet the demand if Chinese companies are banned from the budget smartphone segment, Reliance Jio may benefit from this.

PM Narendra Modi to visit Mangaluru soon
While it is not yet clear if the teachers had sustained injuries from the incident, officials in the area are investigating the alleged assault.
Talking to The Tribune over phone, Punjab State Women Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati said, “I have seen the viral video and we will take suo moto notice in this incident. It is quite upsetting that a woman who raises public issues strongly is facing harassment at home.” Gulati added that she respects the privacy of Baljinder Kaur, but now the issue is out in the public as the video has gone viral. Meanwhile, residents of Talwandi Sabo assembly segment are raising questions over the timing of the release of the video ahead of CM Mann’s visit and ask that why Baljinder Kaur was silent over this issue for the last two months. CM Bhagwant Mann is to visit Takth Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo on Friday.

MLA Tom Shypitka calls for action to help neglected BC mining town
Residents of the mining town of Atlin, B.C. in the NDP’s Stikine riding are waiting years for mining and notice of work permits to be processed, facing the harsh reality that the lack of action by the government is leading to the shutdown of their town.
One such company, that invests nearly $4 million into the town annually has begun the process of leaving the province due to lengthy permitting wait times and arbitrary bonding schedules. There is an additional $8 million in local benefits tinkering on the edge for this year. Many residents have noted that the NDP MLA for Stikine, Nathan Cullen, and NDP Energy Minister Bruce Ralston are nowhere to be found and are not responding to Visit our Website www.theasianstar.com their pleas to speed up the approval process and aid their town’s hopes of survival.
Shypitka travelled to Atlin last week to attend a local town hall and hear the concerns of the Taku River Tlingit First Nation, residents, and business owners firsthand. He says MLA Cullen and Minister Ralston should do the same. “The people of Atlin have every reason to be afraid and upset. This is a completely unacceptable wait time that could be easily avoided, and for that reason, I am calling on the NDP government to approve their permits in hopes of saving this summer season,” added Shypitka. “These residents and workers — like many others in B.C.’s rural communities — are feeling the cold shoulder from government. They feel like there is nobody standing up for them as they try to make ends meet and save their town.”
