Visa Mistake Rips Family Apart Over 100 Birmingham Taxis Drivers Have Criminal Records A

U

mer Farooq’s visa was rejected by the Home Office over what his family claims was a ‘small mistake’, forcing him to remain in Pakistan during his daughter’s 4th birthday. Farooq travelled to Pakistan to take care of his mother in November 2014, before submitting a visa application to return back to the UK in August 2017. The application was denied in November 2017 over a ‘small error’, and so his wife re-submitted the documents

for an appeal in December 2017. The Home Office was due to respond by February 2018, but have missed their deadline by over a month. Farooq’s wife, Nazneen Hussein, is still awaiting their response. She says, ‘I corrected the mistake, which wasn’t our mistake…the refusal letter quite clearly states it’s just that one error’. She claims the error was in fact due to the centre at which her husband took his English test. They had not provided

the correct test code, resulting in the refusal of Farooq’s application. His wife went on to say ‘I am trying everything in my power but there are certain things that are out of my control… My hair is falling out, I have anxiety, I need my husband home’. A spokeswoman at the Home Office has responded to the family’s concerns, saying the Home Office are ‘reconsidering Mr Farooq’s case and will be in touch with his representatives shortly’.

n investigation has revealed that over 100 taxi drivers around Birmingham are licensed to operate, despite having been convicted for crimes including: speeding, driving without insurance and drug dealing. The Freedom of Information Act has revealed details of 114 of 6,000 licenced drivers in the city, to have previous criminal convictions. Due to how this does not include those licenced by other councils, the true figure is likely to be much higher. Birmingham now faces pressure from the community and Perry Barr Labour MP, Khalid Mahmood is among those to demand change. He stated ‘attention needs to be urgently put to this’ in order to ensure the safety for all passengers. Mr Mahmood has called for the introduction of regional standards to stop the practice of drivers approaching cheaper councils or those seen as more lenient. Wolverhampton, in

particular, has come under fire for issuing licenses to drivers based miles away. The West Midlands Combined Authority is believed to be looking into the matter and Birmingham licensing chief, Chris Neville, has said: "We take taxi licensing and public safety very seriously. ‘All applications for new Hackney Carriage or private hire drivers’ licences are subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and all licensed drivers must be DBS-checked every three years. ‘Any applicants or licence holders with convictions for dishonesty, drugs, violence or sexual offences are brought before one of the licensing sub-committees, who then determine whether they are a fit and proper person to hold a licence’ ‘We are currently looking at some aspects of our taxilicensing policy including recommending that councillors should not be able to give references for taxi drivers’.

"We will also be consulting on proposals to prevent other elected persons, including MPs, MEPs, elected mayors and Police and Crime Commissioners, from doing the same.” In deciding whether a driver is considered to be fit and proper, a sub-committee will take into account the nature of the offence, length of time since conviction, the driver’s character and any other relevant information’.

Mother Prosecuted For Locals Took To The Street Catch Burglar Tricking Daughter into To A Marriage A

mother has been found guilty of forcing her 17-year-old daughter to marry a relative in Pakistan. The defendant persuaded her young daughter to come on a family trip to Pakistan, by bribing her with a new mobile phone. Once they had arrived, the mother admitted to bringing her in order to get her married and threatened to destroy her passport if she did not comply. The jury at Birmingham Crown Court heard the teen had sobbed through the ceremony and was then left alone in Pakistan with a groom almost twice her age. The teen, who cannot be named in order to ensure her anonymity, soon contacted a friend and was able to raise alarm. The family division of the high court then summoned the mother and she was brought to trial. The defendant denied all charges and claimed no ceremony had taken place. She later admitted to lying under oath but insisted that daughter was happy in Pakistan and was staying on

her own accord. However, in a letter to the judge, the teenager wrote: “I think my mother sold me for a British passport. I’m scared

to go back to Pakistan. I hate it there.” Proceeding the letter, the 45-year old mother of four was found guilty of forced marriage and perjury.

community of around 50 residents took to the streets to chase and catch a suspected burglar. Amazing scenes caught on camera of a witness showing members of the neighbourhood watch and residents pouting out into the area in a bid to track down the alleged crook. In video footage residents can be heard shouting "I think we've got him, I think we've got him" as they surround Canberra Road in Walsall on Saturday (May 12) afternoon. A man was arrested when police arrived at the scene. Residents surrounded the street, blocking off every possible escape route with their cars. The local, who witnessed the whole arrest, said: "I looked out the window and saw a man jumping over a fence, I went outside to see what was happening. "Neighbours had blocked off all escape routes with their cars. It was like the A-Team, they all jumped into action. "One of the neighbours saw him in a garden and grabbed him. "I was amazed how the local community were so quick to help each other, it's not something you see a lot

In a message to the neighbourhood watch group PCSO Tim Littlehales said: "At approx 2.30pm on Saturday 12th May a burglary took place on Birmingham

Road past the lights by the Bell pub. "The offender broke into the property from the rear. Local residents from the Neighbourhood watch/ Whatsapp group attended the location to try to locate the offender. "Police officers also in attendance. The offender was caught in the rear garden of Charlesmont Road / Hobart Drive location. "The offender was arrested for the offence and has been remanded to appear before the courts. Shortlist for Channel 4 Cities Revealed

ONE SMALL KITCHEN FOR MAN, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR UK LANDLORDS

T

he shortlist for Channel 4 relocation has been revealed with West Midlands listed for the national headquarters or creative hub, alongside Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Greater Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool. The region put forward Birmingham and Coventry as potential homes to the broadcaster. The other cities that have been chosen for the location for a creative hub and will be competing are Stroke on Trent, Belfast, Brighton, Newcastle-Gateshead, Nottingham and Sheffield. Wolverhampton, submitted a separate bid after not being included in the West Midlands submission, has missed out. Channel 4 agreed to move 300 jobs out of London after sustained Government pressure. The roles will be based at a national HQ and two smaller hubs as part of the broadcaster’s Nations and Regions strategy. The West Midlands bid, led by West Midlands Combined Authority, is focused on potential sites in Birmingham and Coventry, highlighting the many strengths of the West Midlands under the strapline of ‘Get Closer’. The Mayor

of the West Midlands Andy Street said: “This was the first hurdle we needed to overcome in order to secure the new national HQ for Channel 4 and now we can focus on enhancing our bid further. “Both Birmingham and Coventry offer powerful arguments to Channel 4 in terms of location, talent and the youth and diversity of the population and I am pleased this has been recognised. Now the hard work really starts as we begin negotiations in earnest to develop the most compelling case possible to the broadcaster.” The next stage for the shortlisted cities will include Channel 4 visiting each city for a presentation and Q&A. Following this, Channel 4 will engage in further discussions

with cities and regions as necessary, before selecting the final locations in October 2018. The political leaders of the two West Midlands cities in the running have welcomed Channel 4’s announcement. Cllr George Duggins, leader of Coventry City Council, said: “It is great to see that Channel 4 recognises the combination of factors that make Coventry and the West Midlands the perfect place for businesses looking to relocate and build for the future.” Cllr Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council, added: “Birmingham is a perfect fit for this move and we look forward to working with Channel 4 to showcase in even greater detail what we have to offer here in the heart of the UK.”

M15, Police And Birmingham City Council to Fight Terrorism H

ome Secretary Sajid Javid has announced Birmingham City Council will be asked to work closely with the police and MI5 to fight terrorism. Three new anti-terror partnerships has been designed to step up the fight against violent extremism and this will be in London, Greater Manchester and the West Midlands. Parts of the West Midlands, and the Birmingham wards of Springfield, Sparkhill, Hall Green and Hodge Hill in particular, have been home to a high proportion of convicted terrorists . The new “multi-agency approach” involves the security services, known as MI5, and the police using and sharing information more widely, working with partners such as local authorities to improve their understanding of people who could become involved in terrorism. Launching a new antiterrorism plan, Mr Javid, the MP for Bromsgrove, said police and security services are currently watching “3,000

subjects of interest”. And they had stopped 25 Islamist-linked plots in the past five years, he said. “We could have seen one attack every two months”, Mr Javid warned. But he also said there was a threat from far-right groups. Referring to the Westminster terrorist attack in March 2017, Mr Javid said: “Four extreme right wing plots have been foiled since the Westminster attack” Measures in the anti-terror strategy include: Security services to intervene more quickly in terror plots. Longer prison sentenced and better management of terrorist offenders. UK to work closely with international partners The Government to work more closely with the private sector on a range of issues including protecting economic and physical infrastructure, gaining faster alerts to suspicious purchases and continuing to make it difficult for terrorists

to use the internet for propaganda. Continuing with the Prevent strategy, which aims to identify people at risk of becoming radicalised. Mr Javid said he acknowledged concern that this targeted Muslims but believed it was essential.

He said: “As Home Secretary my priority will always be to keep our country safe. The threat from terrorism is one of the starkest we face and it is clear there has been a step change “The biggest threat is from Islamist terrorism

particularly from Daesh, but extreme right-wing terrorism is also an increasing threat. Both exploit grievances, distort the truth, and undermine the values that hold us together. “As the threat evolves so must our response. Ultimately, our approach is

9

about ensuring that there are no safe spaces for terrorists to operate – internationally, in the UK or online. “Our greatest strength lies not only in what we do but who we are and the values and freedoms we hold dear. That is why everyone has a part to play in confronting terrorism. “I want to say to all those who stand up against all forms of extremism that this Government stands with you. I stand with you. But there is more for us all to do.” West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said: “West Midlands Police work closely with councils and other agencies to tackle terrorism and protect the public. I welcome ever closer working and sharing of information. “The Home Secretary is right to identify neighbourhood policing as crucial in fighting terrorism. “With his recent change of tone on policing he needs to ensure that areas like the West Midlands are supported with the resources that they need.

Birmingham teacher Jaskiran Madahar and his wife Kawal are pictured loved-up as they celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary on holiday. But just hours after this photo was taken which was on Friday 13, Jaskiran died FOUR TIMES when his heart stopped. Astonishingly he was brought back from the dead by medics each time. The 36-year-old has now been fitted with a ‘guardian angel’ implant in his heart, which will shock his heart back into action if it stops again in the future. “Some would say Friday the 13th is a day of bad luck,” says Jaskiran. “I just feel incredibly lucky to be alive after my heart stopped on four separate occasions. “There were never any signs that there was something wrong with me. “I’m generally fit and healthy, so when this happened it was a bolt out of the blue.” The day after the couple arrived home from the USA on Friday April 13, Jaskiran was sat on the sofa when he stopped breathing and passed out. He was rushed to City Hospital. After checking his heart, medics picked up an irregularity with his heartbeat and confirmed Jaskiran had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Within minutes of arriving at the hospital, his heart stopped again – and this time it was for ten terrifying minutes. He was revived by medics, but that was not the end of his ordeal. Jaskiran’s heart stopped a further two times, and again the team at City Hospital snatched him back to life. “Since the cardiac arrests in April I’ve been taking it easy,” he says now. “But I can’t really remember anything from about five days before it all happened. “I’m told that my memories will slowly come back. “It hasn’t really all sunk in yet and I’m still trying to get my head around it all. After running tests it was revealed that Jaskiran suffers from rare Long QT Syndrome, a disorder of the heart’s electrical activity which can cause sudden, uncontrollable, dangerous arrhythmias, sometimes in response to exercise or stress. “Since the cardiac arrests in April I’ve been taking it easy,” he says now. “But I can’t really remember anything from about five days before it all happened. “I’m told that my memories will slowly come back. “It hasn’t really all sunk in yet and I’m still trying to get my head around it all. When something like this happens, you re-evaluate your life and want to enjoy it a bit more." The hi-tech device buried in Jaskiran’s body is his guardian angel. “An ICD acts like a

Tipton Mosque Won Appeal JAS SANSI The Thinking Man's Mouthpiece For Expansion

JUNE 2018

Photographer and LoveBrum trustee, Jas Sansi brings a dose of all things Birmingham. With an unprecedented love of the city and its unique diverseness, he brings his 6-foot passion to The Asian Today.

A mosque in TIpton has won its appeal for expansion after Sandwell councillors rejected an application in December last year. The Central Jamia Mosque on Binfield Street appealed to build a double storey side extension to create a female and children’s community hall with toilets on the ground floor, and a male community area on the first floor along with offices and classrooms.

Councillors had originally rejected the scheme after residents' concerns about the loss of on site parking and fears of increased parking in surrounding streets. The inspector acknowledged there was already a high level of onstreet parking in the vicinity of the site and that cars had been parked in front of accesses to residential properties. But he added: "Whilst

high levels of on-street parking may inconvenience

local residents, who may not be able to park close to their properties, there is no substantive evidence that it would represent a severe risk to highway safety." He went onto recommend a condition restricting the simultaneous use of the prayer room and the community hall so the number of people using the mosque at any one time would not be 'significantly greater' than at present. The costs of the appeal were awarded to the mosque whose legal fees will now be paid by Sandwell Council.

I’ve been on a diet for 50 days. It’s a lifestyle change. Diets encourage weight loss but often put back on when the diet is abandoned and old habits resurface. I have no plans to rekindle old habits. I’ve stopped taking sugar, reduced my salt intake, abandoned alcohol, waved goodbye to processed food and embraced clean eating. It’s been hell. The first 30 days were the most traumatic. After a lifetime of cakes and biscuits, its been a struggle to resist. I miss enjoying a glass of wine but have surprised myself in how determined I am. All I drink now is water and green tea. The most immediate benefit I have experienced is sleep. For the first time in decades, I now enjoy 7 to 8 hours undisturbed deep sleep. I suspect this is down to no longer taking caffeine, sugar, salt and alcohol. All of which I suspect affect the quality of our slumber. The second benefit has been weight loss. I’ve lost just over a stone. This has left me more energised. Another benefit is my clothes fit me much better. Gone is the protruding Winnie the Bear tum. In fact, some of my clothes are beginning to feel quite loose. I’ll purchase new ones as soon as I settle into my new body. Weight loss is a mind game. Most of us want to eat the wrong kinds of food. Thats the stuff we crave. Same with drinks. Even those who are tea total often enjoy fizzy drinks or sugar in their tea and coffee. Sugar is very addictive but I’ve stuck with the new lifestyle. I still miss the bad old days, I probably always will. I’ve always prayed for mental strength, over the last 50 days, I’ve been very thankful for the resolve it has afforded me.

A London student believes he’s found the world’s biggest Crunchy Nut Cornflake — measuring six inches long. Hinay Lad 22-year-old thought a piece of his ceiling had fallen into his bowl when he poured his crunchy nut. Healthcare student Hinay, who goes to Queen Mary University of London, said: “It even looks like it could be something from outer space, a bit of meteorite or something.” The student contacted Kellogg’s and he was sent four £1 vouchers to buy a new pack. He discovered the huge flake during the Easter holidays when he was back home in Bradford, Yorks. Healthcare student Hinay, who goes to Queen Mary University of London, said: “It even looks like it could be something from outer space, a bit of meteorite or something.” Hinay had bought the box of cereal from his local Morrisons for £2.68 he added: ‘It felt like a rock, if you tried bending it, it wouldn’t break. That’s why we thought it was a bit of ceiling. Kellogg’s wanted Hinay, from Bradford, to send them the flake so they can study it and find out how it ended up in the packet. A spokeswoman for the company said the lump was ‘coating and cereal particles which have collected during processing’. She added: ‘Although we work hard to prevent this, it sounds like an accumulation passed the screening process and unintentionally entered the package”.

Birmingham children celebrate literary Oxford University success in national writing competition Announces E

ight local children from Birmingham have been celebrated for their writing success after being named centre winners in the National Young Writers’ Awards. The following children have all been named winning entries by local Explore Learning centres in Oldbury, Handsworth, Kings Heath, Harborne, Shirley, Yardley, Longbridge and Wylde Green: Elijah-David Buttery, 10, St Mary Magdalene CofE, Naina Sidhu, 11, Grestone Academy, Miller Brennan, 8, Wheelers Lane Primary, Sienna Kaur Sian, 9, World's End Junior School, Libby Taylor, 13, Langley Secondary School, Aaliah Ali, 9, Greet Primary School, Ceri Lowe, 11, Queensbridge Secondary and J'yon Brown, 10, Yenton Primary School. The competition, now in its tenth year, has been running for the past three months and invited children from across the UK to write a 500-word story about ‘heroes’ – whether that’s

their parents, a policeman or their idol! Organised by tuition provider, Explore Learning which has centres across Birmingham, with the aim of inspiring children to get creative and give writing a try was this year judged by world renowned best-selling children’s author David Walliams! A record breaking 38,500 children from all over the UK entered in an effort to win a trip to Disneyland Paris and £500 worth of books for their school! And there could be more good news to come for the centre winners as judges are still shortlisting the entries! The top ten national runners up will be announced on Monday 11th June while the national winner will be crowned on the Monday 18th June with a surprise visit from David Walliams to their school! Every child that enters will receive a certificate to celebrate their story, along with personalised feedback from one of Explore Learning’s inspirational

tutors. David Walliams says: “I was overwhelmed by the quality and creativity of the stories I was reading and was so impressed that this broad range of exciting ideas have come from such young writers. Each piece of writing drew me in and kept me captivated by clever and observant story lines and engaging characters. We definitely have some future star authors here.” Explore Learning provides English and maths tuition to children aged four to 14, with 139 centres located across the country. Throughout the competition Explore Learning provided top writing tips from their creative writing team, previous winners, judges and best-selling authors via their website, social media and face to face. They also hosted a collection of free downloadable information on the website that can be used at home or in the classroom as well as running free workshops with

local libraries, schools and community groups to inspire children’s love of writing and support them with their entries. Charlotte Gater, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning says: “This year’s National Young Writers’ Awards attracted a record number of entries so the children should be very proud of their success. We were blown away by the number of children who were inspired to write heroic tales. It is amazing to have David pick our winning entry this year and clearly inspire so many children to put pen to paper. Well done to everyone who entered who has set the bar so high for next year!” For more information about the National Young Writers’ Awards visit www. explorelearning.co.uk/ youngwriters or speak to one of the Explore Learning team directly by emailing them on enquiries@ explorelearning.co.uk or call them on 01483 447410.

Diversity Drive

O

xford University figures show one in five students enrolling are now either black or an ethnic minority. The university announces a new diversity drive in the wake of mounting political pressure. Professor Louise Richardson, Oxford’s vice chancellor, has admitted change has come “too slowly to meet public expectations” and that works remains “to be done” if the university is to reflect modern Britain. For the first time in its history, the university announces its full admissions figures, which it hopes will reassure critics who have condemned its failure to admit more black and disadvantaged students.

The Commoners, The Royals And A wedding

Raaj Shamji Reports on the Royal Wedding

Pictures by Raaj's Wife

To their credit, the British royals have changed with the times. The British use their royals very effectively as national figureheads on the international stage just as Indians and Pakistanis use their movie stars, cricketers and the owners of big businesses as their flag flyers. On the 19 May 2018, my wife and I were amongst 1200 specially invited commoners who rolled up into the ground of Windsor Castle from 8am. Who would have imagined a working class Desi boy from Walsall like me would be invited to a Royal Wedding? We were all issued with a gift bag, an order of service and a wrist band that you would be given if you were attending a festival. Greeted by the Castle’s Wardens it felt as if we were going into Windsor Castle as a regular tourist visiting the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. We knew this was going to be different but uncertain on how given what we had seen before at a Royal Wedding. Princess Diana’s unique compassion and common touch are now amplified in her sons who have set new standards in their choice of their brides and their affection for the people. Akin to any celebrity wedding there were ample celebrities strutting in from 10.30am followed by members of

the Royal Family with The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh arriving just before the bride. Unlike an Asian bride her makeup and jewellery was simple – elegant with a meaningful veil embroidered with flowers, representing the 53 countries of the Commonwealth. Megan Markle is the second American and the first person of mixed race heritage to marry into the British royal family. Woo hoo!! Unlike a typical Royal wedding we heard gospel choirs and a captivating sermon from Bishop Michael Curry fused with the tradition, pomp and circumstance we would usually expect at a Royal wedding. Many complain of the cost of such a spectacle, but let’s put this in perspective. It is reported that the wedding triggered a tourism boom and a boost to the economy of up to £500 million, with the cost of it less than 10% of that. “There is Power in love” As we witnessed a new chapter in our Royal family and I can tell you it felt just right! Post Brexit, I strongly believe that the role of the Royals will be important to strengthen diplomatic relations and as we prepare to embrace the Commonwealth in a more meaningful way. God save the Queen Raaj Shamji

Scottish born mechanic and a 17-year-old Slovakian national, who can’t be named for legal reasons, preyed on their terrified victims after contacting them via the meet-up app for gay men. Khan was caught up in a gang vendetta involving the family of Imran Shahid, who killed innocent teenager Kriss Donald in March 2004. Khan and the teenager arranged to meet a 30-yearold man at his home on September 3 last year after chatting with him on Grindr.

There was a consensual sex act between him and the teenager before Khan grabbed the man by the arm and pushed him against a wall while the teenager raped him. Khan and the Slovakian attacked their second victim in Glasgow a week later. The student victim told the court he had been threatened with violence before Khan forced him to perform a sex act on him. Judge Lord Uist also sentenced the Slovakian to eight years’ detention. Both were told they would be supervised by the authorities for two years following their release from custody. Khan, who worked at family business Khan's Autos, told a social worker the crimes were “just a bit of fun”. Another Slovakian, Julius

Sabika Sheikh, 17, was among the eight students and two teachers who were killed in the attack on May 18. Her body was flown back to Pakistan on Wednesday and hundreds of people attended the funeral. Sabika was due to return home to Pakistan in just a few weeks' time, ahead of the Muslim festival of Eid. She had been studying in Texas for the last year as part of a US government programme to improve understanding between America and Muslim countries. Her family said she

had hoped to one day work as a diplomat. Her father told the BBC he wanted his daughter's death to be a catalyst for change to America's gun laws. The shooter identified as 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, is being held on murder charges and could face the death penalty. Students said he entered an art class and opened fire shortly before 08:00 (13:00 GMT) on Friday. There were 1,400 students in the school at the time of the attack Police later found information in the suspect's diary, and on his computer and mobile phone, suggesting that he had planned the attack and intended to kill himself afterwards.

26-year-old man from Delhi has admitted to killing his parents, after they denied him permission to marry a woman who he befriended on Facebook, in southeast Delhi's Jamia Nagar. Abdul Rehman was in a relationship with a woman from Kanpur and became friends on Facebook two years ago. Rehman’s first marriage ended in divorce and in 2017, he re-married due to his parents’ wishes. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said his extra-marital affair continued and would meet his Facebook friend regularly and even promised to marry her. Rehman told his parents that he wanted to marry his

Facebook friend, but they objected to it. He devised a plan to kill his parents and roped in two acquaintances — Nadeem Khan and Guddu. Rehman had promised them Rs 2.5 lakh for the task. On the day of the incident, Rehman called Khan and Guddu to his home and the trio attacked the parents while they were asleep. Guddu caught hold of Taslim Bano (50) and Khan grabbed Shamim Ahmed (55). Rehman smothered them to death using their bedsheet and blanket. The bodies were found on the first floor of the house on April 28. Rehman admitted to killing his parents. He and his accomplices were arrested later.

Victim of Forced Marriage Joked of Alleged Plot A

n alleged teenage victim of a forced marriage had joked about her parents "giving her away" weeks before she flew to Bangladesh, a court has been told. The 19-year-old was lured on a sham holiday on 3 July 2016 to force her to marry her cousin, jurors heard. Her parents, who cannot be named for legal reasons, are on trial at Leeds Crown Court via a Bengali interpreter. They both deny charges of attempting to coerce their daughter into marrying without her consent. The Leeds woman used her phone to send her location details to her boyfriend, who then informed West Yorkshire Police on 11 July she may be in danger, prompting her eventual rescue, the jury heard. Giving evidence from behind a screen, her boyfriend told the court that three weeks before flying to Bangladesh, the teenager had mentioned her father selling his possessions and joked: "What if he is planning to give me away?". "I could only think about one thing... and that's the Asian culture of arranged marriage," he said. However, he claimed he took her remark to be a "joke" and was not initially worried. But it was not until seven days into the trip that the woman contacted him and, in one message, told him not to text her "for a while", he told the court. The trial continues.

Death Toll Rises in Karachi with heatwave

I

n the southern Pakistani city of Karachi at least 60 people have died from a heat-related illness, rescue officials say, as temperatures soared to 44 degrees Celsius in the country's largest city during Ramadan. Faisal Edhi, chief of the Edhi Foundation rescue service has said with the rise of temperatures most of those who have died so far during the heat wave were elderly or had existing health complications. Back in June 2015, over 1,200 people died of heat-related illnesses in Karachi during a similar heat wave. With the intense heat and deaths this year there are concerns that the situation could spiral, as it did during the 2015 heat wave, with hospital officials saying that mortuaries were overflowing and public sector hospitals were overwhelmed with thousands of patients every day.

Making Eid memorable Top tips to avoid with Asda travel sickness (without resorting to medication)

Summer holiday season is a time of year that many of us look forward to the most, but for some it can also be a time of dread, as travelling on holiday can also mean uncomfortable journeys spent feeling nauseous. Motion sickness, or travel sickness, is extremely common and is thought to be caused by a conflict of information between the senses. Simon Bandy from natural supplements company Veganicity has created some simple top tips for beating motion sickness, without resorting to medication, so holidays can get off to a good start: Avoid alcohol: It can be tempting to kick-start your holiday with an alcoholic drink on the journey, particularly if travelling by plane or boat with access to a bar. However, alcohol can worsen symptoms of motion sickness, so stick to soft drinks until you arrive at

your destination. Eat an apple: Foods high in fibre help to remove nauseainducing chemicals from your system. Try eating an apple or snack on raw vegetables during your journey if you get hungry. Try easy acupressure: This ancient Chinese healing practice of pressing or massaging certain points of the body to prevent illness is thought to help prevent travel sickness. If you’re feeling nauseous on your journey, try pressing your index and middle fingers between the two tendons on the inside of your wrist, about three finger breadths below the base of your palm. Go for ginger: Ginger is reputed to be excellent for maintaining good health and relieving nausea. Veganicity’s Ginger Tincture (£5.95, www. veganicity.com) can be added to water to help settle the stomach. Because it comes in a handy, travel-friendly 50ml bottle, it can also be carried

in hand luggage when flying. Look at the horizon: Motion sickness can sometimes be avoided by focusing on the horizon or a fixed point when travelling by car or boat. Take deep breaths: Deep breathing can create a different rhythm pattern in the stomach, which can help to settle it when feeling nauseous. Taking a few deep breaths will also help you to relax and take your mind off the sickness, like a mini meditation. Leave your phone at home: Avoid checking your phone or tablet or reading during your journey, particularly if travelling by car. The body’s vestibular system, which senses balance from the inner ear, tells the brain that you are moving, but the senses (your sight) tell the brain you are sitting still when focused on reading or looking at a fixed object inside the car, which can add to feelings of nausea.

Manchester mum of three Nargis Ramzan is gearing up for Chaand Raat, “Fasting in the run up to Eid, makes the celebrations feel extra special. Based on the sighting of the moon, my family and I usually take the day off, so we can celebrate together.” For her, Eid is a big feast with the extended family. “Though I buy my ingredients beforehand, I only prepare the dishes the night before and Eid is incomplete without starting the day with Sevaiyan.” Read Full Story Online

Gigi finds support from the Palestinian youth A

fter facing severe backlash for standing against the Israel brutality in her ancestral home, Gigi Hadid has received support from a group of Palestinian younsters. The Palestinian youngsters have come together to write a letter to Gigi Hadid expressing the support for her. The model posted, "I've said it before and I'll say it again, for me, this is not about religion or one against the other - it's about the greed." The letter which has been posted on 'Teen Vogue', supporting the 23-year-old model requesting her to keep voicing her concerns. Read the contents of the full letter below: “Dear Gigi Hadid, We, a group of young Palestinians across the globe, are writing to you today to express our love and solidarity. A recent article in People quotes you as saying that, after vicious attacks by Israeli troops at the Gaza fence, you desire to keep “your opinions to yourself.” Every single one of us knows the pushback and anxiety that comes with speaking out for our people and their basic rights. Many of us have been targeted in some way because of our activism or speaking out; from being blacklisted, to threatened with losing our jobs, to facing threats of violence, and much more. Anti-Palestinian groups whose work it is to intimidate supporters of Palestinians use every tool to silence our voices. They count anyone who steps back from speaking truth to power as a victory for their defense of a brutally violent apartheid regime. We are here to encourage and support you. Please don’t let anyone silence your voice and your truth. Like all Palestinians, you carry the weight of your family and the history of all of your people who are persecuted simply for existing. We can’t imagine how stressful being in the public eye can be and, as individuals who deal with various forms of trauma, anxiety, and depression (among other conditions) as a result of the struggles of our families, communities, and people back home, we understand if you decide to hold back. But whatever you decide to do, know that things are changing, with many young people now supporting Palestinians. Celebrities such as Judd Apatow, Ava DuVernay, Yara Shahidi,

Rowan Blanchard, and more are speaking up for Palestinians. So are elected officials, including Patrick Leahy,Bernie SandersBetty McCollumBarbara LeeDianne Feinstein. Everyone on this earth, Palestinians should be able to express care for their people’s welfare without being attacked. While some are set on making that difficult, the chorus of voices rising up in support gives us the hope necessary to continue our struggle for freedom, justice, liberation, and one that is beautiful in its universality. Groups like StandWithUs, which attacked you online, are pro-Israel advocacy organizations and do not represent the entire public, and official polls show support for Israel in the US has dropped for some groups over the years. In fact, the group also attacked Natalie Portman after she pulled out of an event because of her opposition to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. They do not represent the growing number of young Jews in college in the US who question and critique Israel’s policies. Rather, this organization is part of a network that seemingly hopes to crush advocacy for the Palestinian people. This network is wellresourced and can be quite loud. It’s possible that these groups come down so swiftly because they sense a shift, with Israel’s actions losing support among people of color and millennials. Whenever you or your sister Bella comment on Palestine, Palestinians in the diaspora and in the region rejoice. When you speak on an issue that is close to your heart, it is inspiring to your following and the many young people who look up to you. Even if only a fraction of your fans were to better understand and support Palestinian justice as a result, your voice is incredibly impactful and meaningful. Whether in the homeland or in diaspora, Palestinian voices have been silenced for far too long. We understand the difficult circumstances you are facing and send you our love and support whatever your choice. But if you decide to keep on and are uplifted by the growing solidarity with our people’s struggle for freedom, as we are, we are honored to raise our voices alongside yours. As civil rights activist Ella Baker said, “We who believe in freedom cannot rest.” Gigi, you are a part of

Released are short and gentle energy pulses that directly target the hair follicle whilst dissuading return. Is SHR Permanent Hair Removal Suitable For Everyone? This option works extremely well for fair-haired people whilst posing no issues at all during the summer months when tans have developed. The procedure is suitable all-year round. Is It Safe? From the clinical studies undertaken, SHR has been proven to be the safest method of light based hair reduction for all skin types. Melanin found within darker skin is known to be much more sensitive to the heat when used in light based treatments. There are no such issues presented with this option.

For more information please contact us: this beautiful struggle, and believe us when we tell you that we will be free and we will win. Sincerely, A group of Palestinian youth.”

After reading the letter, it is reported tht the model was 'super touched' by it. Hadid has always conveyed her beliefs in staying true to her roots.

Survey Reveals Women Know More About Strokes Than Men 72% of women knew the Act F.A.S.T. acronym which is used to help people identify the signs of a stroke compared to 62% of men. Only 86% of men surveyed knew the three most common signs of a stroke compared to 91% of women. Most people (84%) were aware that the faster stroke patients receive medical treatment the greater their chances of a better recovery, but shockingly almost 40% are not aware that getting treatment fast can help avoid long-term disability. Older people aged 55-74 are more likely to have a stroke but were less likely to be aware that getting treatment fast could save a person’s life. Knowing any single one of the signs of a stroke and calling 999 immediately if you spot one is crucial – the faster you act the better the chances of a good recovery. However a new survey reveals that women were more likely to know the three most common signs of

a stroke compared to men, despite men being at a higher risk of having a stroke at a younger age than women. Women were also found to have more knowledge of the Act F.A.S.T. acronym which is used to help people identify the signs of a stroke (72% women vs 62% men). F.A.S.T. stands for: Face – has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile? Arms – can they raise both their arms and keep them there? Speech – is their speech slurred? Time – time to call 999 The survey designed specifically for Asian and Black communities to understand the current levels of knowledge about stroke highlight that some of the key Act F.A.S.T. stroke campaign messages are getting through but there’s still more work to be done. Stroke is a medical emergency, however woman were more likely than men to say that they would seek help quickly if they notice

someone showing the signs of a stroke. The Act F.A.S.T. stroke campaign stresses the importance of acting fast and calling 999 as soon as you see even one of the signs developing in yourself or someone else. While most people (84%) were aware that the faster stroke patients receive medical treatment the greater their chances of a better recovery, surprisingly, almost 40% were not aware that getting treatment fast could help avoid long-term disability. Treatment is more effective if it is received within 3 hours of the onset of a stroke. Professor Julia Verne, Public Health England Director: “We’d like to thank the media for getting behind this survey and everyone who participated, the response has been great. The results show that some of our ACT F.A.S.T. messages are getting

through to those most at risk of stroke. However, it’s clear that we need to work harder to increase awareness of all the common signs of stroke and improve understanding that acting fast can save lives and prevent long-term disability.” Actor Bhasker Patel: “I’m pleased that our community has taken time out to participate in this survey. The results are fascinating and interesting. It’s great to know that we have high levels of awareness of the stroke signs but we must not be complacent. We need to do more to make sure that we continue to spread awareness of all the signs and encourage everyone to act fast, without delay when they notice any one of the signs of stroke. I hope these results will go a long way to help inform future ACT F.A.S.T. campaigns.”

Supermarket Fuel Law Change for Learner Price Rises For Past Drivers A Three Years

Recent data from RAC fuel watch has shown that supermarkets in the UK have raised price of fuel every single day since the end of March. Research has discovered that the big four supermarkets have increased prices by more than 8p, from 116.66p to 124.74p.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “This is the worst series of consecutive daily supermarket price rises we have seen since we began monitoring this three and a half years ago.” It seems their are two key factors responsible for the hike: the rise in oil prices to over $80 a barrel, and the

unfavourable pound/dollar exchange rate. Fuel is traded in dollars, therefore a weak pound makes the cost of purchasing more expensive for UK wholesalers who pass the increase on to the pump. Nationally, petrol now costs an average of 128.29p a litre, while diesel has increased to 131.15p

s from Monday 4 June learner drivers will be allowed to take their lessons on the country's motorways. Previously it was illegal for drivers without a full licence to drive on motorways. With the new rules learner drivers will be able to gain valuable experience at higher speeds, according to the government. For first time learner drivers that are ready to take their test will be allowed to have motorway driving lessons with an approved driving instructor using a dual controlled car displaying L plates. Lesson on the motorway will be voluntary and it will be up to the instructor to decide when the learner is ready to drive on a motorway. According to the Gov.UK website, the law change will allow learner drivers to: • get broader driving experience before taking their driving test, • get training on how to join and leave the

motorway, overtake and use lanes correctly, • practise driving at higher speeds and, • put their theoretical knowledge into practice. These changes apply to England, Wales and Scotland only. The law applies to drivers of cars only (licence category B). Learner drivers will need to be: • accompanied by an approved driving instructor (with ADI certificate correctly positioned in the

car windscreen) • driving a car fitted with dual controls and displaying L plates Richard Leonard, from Highways England said: "We want all drivers on our motorways to be as safe as possible. "We’re looking forward to helping the motorway drivers of tomorrow to develop new skills and get invaluable practical knowledge and experience of using motorways thanks to this law change."

MOURINHO'S Asian Sports Foundation MANCHESTER wins National Lottery funding T DENIED

The FA Cup Final saw Chelsea beat Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley on Saturday 19 May, leaving Jose Mourinho's team empty-handed this season. The crucial moment of the final came in a tepid first half as Chelsea's Eden Hazard made a brilliant surge into the United penalty area and was crudely brought down by England defender Phil Jones. United tried to fight back, with Alexis Sanchez taking his chances who had the ball in the net, but it was ruled out for offside under the VAR system, while United's record signing Paul Pogba had the best chance to level with eight minutes to go but headed wide from a corner. Mourinho, who had never lost an English domestic final, was in typically defiant mood after the defeat. "We were the second-best team in the Premier League and we were the best team in the FA Cup and didn't deserve to officially be second best," he told BBC Sport. However, Chelsea Manager Antonio Conte's future at the club is still uncertain despite the battling 1-0 victory. Conte has admitted he is unsure of where he will be next season and Thibaut Courtois added: 'Whatever he or the club decides, they know what they do... As players we're happy we won a trophy for the club and the fans. This was the eighth FA Cup trophy for Chelsea, United had been bidding for a record-equaling 13th, and its first since 2012. Prince William, who is president of the FA, normally hands out the cup at the final, but as his brother Harry was getting married to Meghan Markle earlier that day, could not attend. Instead, the honor was given to the Jackie Wilkins, the wife of former Chelsea and Manchester United great Ray Wilkins, who passed away earlier this year.

Spain Squad Named for World Cup 2018

The Spain squad for the world cup 2018 in Russia has released the names of the players. Alvaro Morata has missed out on a place along with Cesc Fabregas, Marcos Alonso, Ander Herrera and Hector Bellerin. Julen Lopetegui named his 23-man squad for the tournament with four Premier League players include David de Gea, Cesar Azpilicueta, Nacho Monreal and David Silva. There was no place for Chelsea striker Morata, with Isco, Sergio Asensio, Lucas Vazquez, Rodrigo and Diego Costa preferred in attack. Morata has struggled for fitness and form since joining Chelsea from Real Madrid last summer and has scored 11 goals in the Premier League since arriving in England. Meanwhile, Andres Iniesta has been included in the squad the day after playing his final game for Barcelona. Spain will open their tournament against neighbours Portugal on June 15 before they face Iran and Morocco in their remaining Group B fixtures. Spain squad for 2018 World Cup: Goalkeepers: David de Gea, Pepe Reina, Kepa Arrizabalaga Defenders: Dani Carvajal, Alvaro Odriozola, Gerard Piqué, Sergio Ramos, Nacho, Cesar Azpilicueta, Jordi Alba, Nacho Monreal Midfielders: Sergio Busquets, Saúl, Koke, Thiago Alcantara, Andres Iniesta, David Silva Forwards: Isco, Sergio Asensio, Lucas Vázquez, Iago Aspas, Rodrigo, Diego Costa.

he Asian Sports Foundation is celebrating after being awarded £100,000 of National Lottery funding from Sport England to help low income families in Bradford get active with their children. Four out of five primary school children do not get the recommended amount of daily exercise of 60 minutes a day, and are missing out on the benefits it brings. Children from low income families are most likely to do very little physical activity. The Asian Sports Foundation’s Bradford Families Activity is one of the first projects to receive investment from a £40 million National Lottery funding pot that Sport England has dedicated to helping families get active together. The fund is a key part of Sport England’s focus on helping young people have an enjoyable experience of sport and physical activity so they develop a positive attitude towards being active at an early age and continue being active in later life. Sport England are funding organisations that help families get active together, because parents and close family members can have a big impact on children’s experiences. As well as giving children direct access to sporting opportunities, Sport England research shows that they are also significant role models in helping their children get active – because how a parent behaves impacts what a child sees as important.

Parents who are active themselves, and enjoy it, can encourage positive feelings about exercise and its value in their children. Yet many parents lack the skills or confidence to take part in sport with their children as they fear they cannot keep up. For example, if adults don’t know how to swim or lack confidence on a bike, this has a knock-on impact on the activities they feel they can do as a family and how much they encourage children to take part. Each of the funded projects will work to address this by building adults’ confidence around getting active with their children, and by providing experiences for families that are enjoyable, convenient and low cost. The Asian Sports Foundation works with partner National Governing Bodies, clubs and community organisations at a strategic level to deliver tangible projects which break down cultural and religious barriers and provide sporting and physical activity benefits to underrepresented minority ethnic communities. In the Bradford Families Activity project – the ASF will be working with both the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and the BEAP Community Partnership. Sport England's Director of Children and Young People Jayne Molyneux said: “It’s not right that four in five children don’t get enough exercise and are missing out on the health benefits it

SPORTS

brings. Just by seeing their parents being active, children can be inspired to do the same, and if they have an enjoyable experience they’re far more likely to continue as an adult. “Parents have many demands on their time, and often lack the confidence to get active with their children. That’s why Sport England is working hard to make getting active with your children an easy choice. With this new National Lottery funding, the Asian Sports Foundation will be able to support 200 families from the Manningham and Holme Wood areas of Bradford to become more active.” The Asian Sports Foundation’s Chief Executive Angus Martin said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this funding support from Sport England and the National Lottery. It will help us to make a big impact on the lives of the families we will support through this project and it is also vitally important for our own growth as a new charity. We have chosen these specific areas within Bradford as we want to bring both families and communities together

to be more active, play more sport and learn how to lead healthier lives in general. By working in Manningham and Holme Wood and developing opportunities for the families involved to mix and get to know each other through the project we will also be adding a much-needed community cohesion approach to the work that we are doing.” Professor Lord Patel of Bradford OBE, the Honorary President of Asian Sports Foundation added: “The valuable funding from the National Lottery to increase exercise, not only for children and young people, but also their parents - encouraging and supporting people to be more physically active is absolutely crucial to addressing a wide range of public health concerns, including tackling obesity and diabetes and improving metal health and wellbeing. As President of the Asian Sports Foundation I am proud that we have been appointed as one of the first projects to be funded and can use our experience, gathered over many years to make a difference to the lives of children and their parents – especially in my home city of Bradford.”

Senegal stand to play Poland, Japan and Columbia in Russia and although the rest of the team is coming together at various stages and so only nine players were present in the first meeting, the midfielder remains upbeat and excited. Speaking to Senegalese Press Agency, he said: ‘We do not have a specific goal, but we will take match by match, with the ambition to go as far as possible’

‘We are aware that no match will be easy for us in this World Cup, we will take every game as a final’ ‘What I can tell you with certainty is that my teammates and I intend to do something great during this world’ ‘We have been waiting for this qualification for sixteen years, now that we are there, we must make the most of it and work hard to honour our country with dignity.’ If Senegal are eliminated in the group stages Ndoye's season will end on June 28th 2018. Mo Farah Wins Manchester 10K

B

ritain’s Olympic and world 10,000m champion Mo Farah won the 10 kilometre Great Manchester Run. Farah, finished third in the London Marathon last month, deployed his famous finishing kick to surge past Uganda’s Moses Kipsiro with 100 metres left to win in a time of 28 minutes 27 seconds. Before the race Farah was among the competitors and spectators and officials who all observed a minute’s silence in memory of the 22 people killed as a result of last year’s Manchester Arena bombing. “I’ve got great speed and I know that at the end of the races I can use it if the guys haven’t hurt me enough, so today was a matter of hanging in there,” Farah told BBC Sport. “I was pretty tired. Having competed in the marathon not so long ago, today was hard work,” added Farah, who is now concentrating solely on road-racing events following a brilliant career on the track. Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba won her third straight Manchester women’s race, with Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei a distant second.

South Africa Captain Announces Retirement

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has revealed it is time and announced his retirement from playing international cricket. The 34-year-old made his Test debut against England in December 2004, last played for his country against Australia in March this year. He scored 8,765 Test runs for South Africa and has a batting average of over 50 in both Test and ODI cricket. Speaking in a video posted on Twitter, he said: "I have decided to retire from all international cricket with immediate effect. It's time for others to take over, I've had my turn and to be honest I'm tired. "This has been a tough decision. I thought long and hard and I'd like to retire while still playing decent cricket and after the series wins against India and Australia, now feels the right time to step aside. "It wouldn't be right for me to pick and choose what formats I play in, for me it's either everything or nothing." De Villiers added that he would still be available to play in domestic cricket and would "still support Faf du Plessis and the squad as best I can". De Villiers holds the record for the fastest one-day century, reaching three figures in just 31 balls against West Indies in January 2015. He also holds the record for the fastest Test century by a South African, making 100 from 75 balls against India in 2011. Cricket South Africa president Chris Nenzani said "AB is one of the all-time greats of South African cricket who has thrilled spectators around the world. "It goes without saying that he is going to be greatly missed wherever international cricket is played."
