Bollywood was in full glitz and glamour on Wednesday 18 September and was dubbed the biggest night in Hindi films. This year the 20th Indian International Film Academy (IIFA) took place in the heart of Bollywood, Mumbai for the first time The IIFA Awards are effectively the Hindi film industry's equivalent of the Oscars, and so are always an extraordinarily star-studded affair.

Ranveer Singh began the night by starting a rendition of Mere Gully Mein while standing in the crowd. He then, however, hopped up on stage, and his performance was extravagant.

There was performance from the talented Madhuri Dixit, Salman

Khan, Sara Ali to name a few.

To help save his newlywed bride who is fighting for her life after doctors misdiagnosed bleeding on her brain.

Arslan Qurban from Walsall married Rida Fatima married from Pakistan in February after a whirlwind romance.

But their dream came crashing down when Rida went to see her doctor, complaining of migraine and vomiting back in September.

She says she was told she had food poisoning and was sent away.

Less than 24 hours later, she began losing vision in her left eye, and Arslan urged her to go hospital.

She arrived at the hospital, collapsed and had a seizure and needed two emergency surgeries to stop the bleed on her brain.

Arslan is appealing for help to pay her medical bills, which are topping £5,000-a-week at the Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad.

“They told me that, if she’d left it any longer, I would have lost her,” he said.

After her seizure in the hospital she was rushed for a CT scan which revealed she had suffered two brain bleeds.

When Arslan heard the news, her husband flew out to Pakistan to be with his wife.

“I’ve been manic and it is heartbreaking not being able to be there with her,” said Arslan, who works as a rental advisor at a car hire company near Birmingham Airport.

“I flew out to Pakistan as soon as I could. When I arrived, her face was all swollen and I could barely recognise her.

“They don’t know why it happened because she was perfectly healthy before.

“Now, she is still in intensive care, but she has been able to open her eyes, and she even attempted to write.

“She has responses on her right side, but nothing from her left yet.

“Hopefully, if things continue to improve then she will be out of intensive care in the next couple of weeks and will be moved onto a normal ward.

“Then it will be a lot of intense physiotherapy. But at this stage we just don’t know how injured her brain is.

“We have to wait for the swelling to go down.”

Rida and Arslan met a year ago via a Muslim dating app.

“She was on a ventilator and was in a coma at first, but she is showing signs of improvement.

“On the day I went into see her she was slipping in and out of consciousness. She would be awake for a minute or so then fall back to sleep.

“But I sat beside her and she recognised my voice. She grabbed me by the neck and pulled me close to her. It was really emotional.

“Then she tried to open her eyes. She is showing good signs, and I know she can do it.”

Rida began suffering with a headache on September 8, and went to her GP, who prescribed migraine medication.

The following day she again visited the doctor, this time with a severe headache and vomiting.

A Wolverhampton Labour Councillor pays tribute to her hero US deputy sheriff brother Sandeep Dhaliwal who was killed on duty in Texas.

The death of “trailblazing” deputy sheriff has sparked an outpouring of grief in America and left his family devastated.

Tributes have been pouring in for Sandeep Dhaliwal, 41, who was shot during a routine traffic stop.

His sister, Rupinderjit Kaur,37, is a Labour councillor for the Spring Vale ward.

The father-of-three made history as the first Sikh to become a

sheriff's deputy in Harris County, Texas, and fought for five years for the right to wear a turban on duty.

Mr Dhaliwal moved to America in 1995 and Ms Kaur to the UK in 2003. She has been based in Wolverhampton since 2013 and became a councillor two years later.

The councillor said she was proud of her brother for doing his duty despite the challenges he faced in Texas.

Councillor Kaur said her family had always feared her brother’s job could put him in danger, especially because of muchpublicised problems with gun crime and racism in America’s south.

But she said she was proud of him for following his dream of becoming a police officer, despite the challenges of being a Sikh in Texas.

Councillor Kaur said: “When he said he was joining the police force we were scared but at the same time we were proud of his decision and supported him.”

Sandeep, was shot in the head near Houston on Friday after a

routine traffic stop turned deadly.

Mr Dhaliwal’s death has sparked an outpouring of emotion in the state. A “communityled” candlelit vigil was held on Saturday.

Thousands of people from all walks of life including police officers, Sikh believers, IndianAmericans and Houston-area residents turned out for the day-long ceremonies to honour slain police officer Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal, Harris County sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Deputy Dhaliwal "was a hero, he was a respected member of the community and he was a trailblazer".

Houston mayor Sylvester Turner said he was a “bold and groundbreaking law enforcement officer in the eyes of our county, our state, our nation, and around the world, because he sought and received permission to patrol while wearing the outward signs of his Sikh faith, including a turban and beard”.

A memorial service was held on Saturday at Guru Nanak Gurdwara on Sedgley Street, , Wolverhampton.

Arslan said they immediately ‘clicked’ and he fell head over heels for her straight away “She has responses on her right side, but nothing from her left yet.

“We fell in love so fast,” said the 25-year-old man.

“Ever since that first day we spoke, our love just grew and grew.

“I asked her to be my wife in a matter of a few months.

“Rida said yes straight away and finally my whole life made sense. Everything in my life had led me to the day I married her.

“It’s now been three weeks since I heard her voice and I pray I will hear it again soon.

“I know I can get my wife back, I just need to fight for it.”

Arslan has appealed for help to pay for Rida’s medical bills and said his parents were considering remortgaging their house to

help.

He has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for a treatment, which has already generated more than £17,000 in generous donations.

“We know she is in the best hands that she can be right now, as she is in a specialist hospital," said Arslan.

“But the bills are expensive. As her husband, I need to do everything I can to try and help her and get her the best treatment.

“That is why I set up the GoFundMe page. I know in my heart that my wife has the courage to make a recovery, even though we have a long road ahead.

“Any help anyone can give to help get my wife back would mean so much to me.

“I need your help to save my wife’s life – she is everything to me.”

A West Midlands Police officer is the first Sikh woman to reach the rank of Superintendent after progressing her career through the force.

Harvi Khatkar has been with WMP for 25 years and has fulfilled a wide range of roles including neighbourhood policing, response, offender management and force incident manager. She is a firearms and public order commander.

Harvi has made her mark across the region after spending time based in Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton as part of her rise through the ranks.

She was the most senior BME officer in Wolverhampton before becoming part of the WMP2020 programme to help create a more modern, agile police force for decades to come.

Harvi - who is also the force’s business crime lead - went through a rigorous promotion process before successfully being named as

a new Superintendent.

But the modest officer does not consider herself a role model; although she hopes her achievement will inspire others to pursue their own ambitions of a police career.

She said: "It is a real privilege and I have been a police officer in the West Midlands for 25 years now and, although it hasn’t been without challenges getting to this point, I am delighted to have this opportunity.

"I do feel a sense of pride at being the first Asian woman to reach the rank of Superintendent.

"The best thing about being a police officer is no one day is the same, you face varied situations.

"We are a diverse police force with a range of different cultures so I have no doubt there will be many more women, and men, from a BME background who will continue to rise through the force in future.

"If others see me as an inspiration then I am honoured, but the main

Dashcam Footage Could Help A Murder Inquiry Leicestershire Police are asking motorists to check their dashcam footage in case it holds any clues for the murder of 21-year-old Mohammed Jibreel.

Mohammed was found injured in the area of Taylor Road and Kashmir Road, alongside the busy Dysart Way, at around 3pm on Saturday.

He was taken to hospital where he died during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mohammed was involved in an incident with a group of people in the area of Taylor Road and Kashmir Road between 2.45pm and 3pm before he was stabbed.

Extensive inquiries into the murder continue in the St Matthew’s area and officers have been studying hours of CCTV footage.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Yarwood, from East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), said: “We know from the enquiries we’ve done so far that there were a number of motorists driving along Dysart Way around 3pm.

“Do you have video recording equipment installed in your vehicles, did you capture any footage which may help us?

Any information, no matter how small, could help us identify those responsible."

He added: “Mohammed was a young man whose loss has

devastated his family.

"We need to find who did this and we know the local community can help us.

“I want to work with you. We know it’s not always easy to come forward so please been assured that any information you may be able to provide will be treated in the strictest confidence.”

Walsall Sikh Temple Plans For Chapel of Rest The Guru Nanak Sikh Temple, in Caldmore, Walsall, plans to demolish 12 houses to build a chapel of rest to support funeral services.

The pans are yet to be approved and the Gurdwara, is looking to demolish properties next to the temple on West Bromwich Street and the adjacent Sandwell Street and replace them with a four-storey chapel which would support funeral services in the area.

Residents have raised a string of concerns including an increase in traffic, noise, disturbance and the loss of shops and housing in the area.

The proposal is set to be discussed at Walsall Council's planning committee meeting on Thursday 3 October.

In the application, the temple said the chapel of rest was needed by its congregation who didn't have the facilities to accommodate mourners.

It also said the existing houses, currently used as rental properties, were small and not energy efficient while the shop - previously a clothes store - had been vacant for a number of years.

Agents M.A. Architectural Ltd said: "Within the

community, a need has been identified for the provision of a suitable facility that we have termed a chapel of rest, with associated ceremonial and worship facilities for the religious congregation.

"The local community is close and all of the usual family special occasions are celebrated by, not only the immediate family, but by the community at large.

"Funerals are a typical

example of this communitywide spirit.

"When there is a death, a bereaved family often does not have the facility to cater for the numbers of mourners from the community.

"As a responsible guardian of the spiritual needs of the community, the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple requests consent to develop a part of the site for a suitably sized facility that will enable the

community-wide respect to be shown."

It added that it did not expect an increase in traffic as the chapel will be used by members of the congregation that already visit the temple.

Student Installs Knife Box At School To Prevent Crime

A secondary school student from Holly Lodge High School in Smethwick has taken it upon herself to design and install a knife box at her school to prevent youngsters from knife crime.

Jakia Khanom, a year 8 student came up with the idea after an interactive session hosted by Sandwell Police at her school inspired her.

Jakia, 13-years-old wrote a small poem and had it engraved into the box which aims to get students to anonymously hand in any knife they have been carrying for what they feel is protection.

The youngster hopes it will help students and parents in the local area to get involved in doing their bit to put an end to the recent rise in youth violence.

Jakia said: “I got the idea from listening to the news and hearing stories of knife crime from the activities we have done in school recently.

“My school took part in a knife

crime initiative with other Sandwell schools called World Café and we wrote poems on the issue from our perspective.

“I hope my idea helps to save someone’s life and it could even be someone I know.”

Police Offender Manager Sgt Dave Rogers has championed the work and said: “This is exactly the kind of original idea we are looking for when we speak to young people in our area.

“If this fantastic idea has a knockon effect on other school students, then we have achieved our aim on educating and deterring the youth of our community from crime.”

The installation of the box is just the latest in the launch of a national week-long operation that aims to increase awareness on the dangers of carrying a knife and exactly what the police are doing to stop it happening.

The knife box will be used to seize any weapons which are given in and will be disposed of appropriately by local police officers.

Teenager’s Bravery After Saving Sister and Grandparents A teenager has been presented with an Honoured Citizen Award Saving after saving his sister and grandparents from a burning house at age 13.

Joshwyn Patel, 13 and his older sister Syonn, 14 were spending a weekend at their grandparents' home in Belgrave, Leicester on Saturday, August 3 when it suddenly became engulfed in flames.

The, two teenagers were in an upstairs bedroom when Syonn noticed a glowing light from under the door.

Joshwyn risked his life to help his grandfather, Hasmukh, 68 and 69-year-old grandmother, Tara to flee the burning house when they realised the fire was rapidly spreading throughout the

Kensington Street house.

Joshwyn has now been presented with an Honoured Citizen Award for his act of bravery after being nominated by Belgrave ward councillor, Nita Solanki.

She said: "The outcome could have been very different and I was keen to make sure he got recognised for what he did."

The award was presented to him by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Annette Byrne on Wednesday, October 2 at Leicester Town Hall.

He was praised for his bravery and for staying so calm during such a dramatic incident.

During the fire, Joshwyn was quick to call the fire service who tackled the flames that had spread throughout the house.

Joshwyn told LeicestershireLive: "My sister told me to ring the fire brigade as soon as possible but my phone wasn't charged so I had to run downstairs to get the house phone.

"At the start I felt quite scared but I managed to calm myself down so I could get everyone out the house and make sure they were safe.

"Towards the end of the evening I felt quite stressed because my grandparents felt stressed and I just felt stressed for them."

Joshwyn's proud parents were relieved that their

children were safe.

The teenager's father, Minesh Patel, 42 said: "It's a credit to both my son and daughter.

"Most children would panic but Joshwyn kept a clear head and even though I would never want my kids in that situation, if he hadn't have been there my parents would have been trapped."

Bhavneeta, the teenagers' mother was on the phone to Syonn at the time of the incident. She said: "My heart was in my throat when my daughter rang me - she was hysterical so I kept her on the phone and drove straight there.

"I am so proud of them for how they dealt with it."

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has said the cause of the blaze was accidental, due to a

Here’s his take on why these awards are vital in helping steer the aspiration of greater diversity in Tech.

Last night the inaugural Midlands Women in Technology Awards showcased some of the region’s brightest stars in Tech.

Keynote speaker Jacqueline de Rojas expressed her joy in seeing an awards event celebrating the contribution of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) outside of London.

This was an important event to host, showcase and talk about. The lack of gender diversity in technology exposes vulnerability in this sector for our region.

Technology is shaping our lives in ways we could not envisage in the past. It is vital, in order to be at the cutting edge, to attract, retrain and foster the greatest talent available.

It’s vital women in technology are recognised and their achievements showcased in order to inspire those who want to succeed in the industry. If young girls read about and see other females achieving success in technology, it can only be beneficial in helping achieve their aspirations.

I envisage these awards growing year on year. Technology is moving at the speed of light, its bewildering for those of us entrenched in analogue lifestyles. In Manchester this week, I struggled to hail a cab, every one that passed operated under the umbrella of a tech start up operation bookable via an app.

Earlier this week, I tweeted about the Laundromat at my daughter’s University Halls where the washing machine has an app built in which notifies her when the washing cycle is complete.

This was read by 14,000 people and attracted 95 likes.

Technology and the Internet of Things will increasingly design our lifestyles and life choices. It’s something we either embrace, in the way Women in Tech Awards do or we risk being left behind, on the side of the road hailing a cab that no longer exists.

More than £30 million investment to transform bus services in Birmingham and Dudley has been announced

by Government.

The funding package will go towards the creation of new bus lanes, upgrades to junctions and better bus stops to improve journey times and reliability and offer a convenient alternative to the car.

Improvements will be focused on Birmingham city centre and links to the south and west Birmingham and Dudley, offering passengers quicker connections as well as links to the expanding Metro, Rail and Sprint networks.

The investment is backed by a grant of more than £24m from the Department for Transport, topped up with funding from West Midlands Bus Alliance partners, which includes Birmingham City Council and Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).

Mayor the West Midlands Andy Street, who has had a series of meeting with Government on bus services, said: “We are already seeing bus use beginning to rise in the West Midlands - bucking the national trend - thanks to measures such as halfprice travel for all 16-18-yearolds, convenient contactless ticketing, and live travel information apps.

“Now this new investment from Government will allow us to further improve bus journeys across the region, making them quicker and more reliable and helping to better connect people to work and leisure opportunities throughout the West Midlands.”

Cllr Ian Ward, WMCA portfolio holder for transport and leader of Birmingham City Council said: “Bus is the most popular form of transport in the region, accounting for more than 260 million journeys a year

and we are looking to make it even more attractive and encourage people to leave their cars at home.

“This is also part of our wider investment in public transport including reopening rail stations, expanding the Metro network and introducing Sprint rapid bus services to

create a better connected West Midlands. We look forward to working in partnership with our Bus Alliance partners to deliver better bus services to the residents of Birmingham and the wider region” It is expected that the new links will benefit 73 million passengers a year.

Detailed designs will be developed in consultation with communities, bus operators and local authorities.

These improvements are expected to boost patronage and contribute towards encouraging people out for their cars, easing congestion and improving air quality.

by Leicester City’s footballer Hamza Choudhury.

A Midlands taxi driver is furious as he is left out of pocket by hundreds of pounds after hitting a road defect.

Ahmmar Mahmud, 41, was left with the repair bill of £500 alongside another driver who hit the same pothole.

Mr Mahmud had to replace an alloy wheel and tyre for his Audi which were damaged by the road defect - two weeks after he reported it to Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

He is now lodging a compensation claim with the council.

Mr Mahmud said "I reported the pothole because you can see the steel underneath - it's not safe.

I then hit it and it cost me £500 to fix the damage.

"The pothole should have been fixed. The car needed a new tyre and it damaged the alloy."

Businessman Mohammed Safir says he has also fallen victim to the potholes on the corner of Plex Street and Nash Peake Street, in Tunstall. He was left with a big crack in his tyre and a repair bill of up to £800.

Travel company Thomas Cook has collapsed and has angered many holiday makers who have booked and currently on their holidays.

Founded in Market Harborough in 1841 by businessman Thomas Cook, the fledgling company organised railway outings for members of the local temperance movement.

178 years later, it had grown to a huge global travel group, with annual sales of £9bn, 19 million customers a year and 22,000 staff operating in 16 countries.

The travel world had progressed from temperance day trips, so the modern business and leisure market was also changing, and at a far faster pace than in previous decades.

As for Thomas Cook's recent attempts to restructure itself, "it looked to me very much like too little too late," he said, adding that a move into the package holiday market by low-cost carriers EasyJet and Jet2 piled on the pressure.

Last summer, shares in Thomas Cook were trading at just below 150p. But after a series of profit warnings, the price had fallen to just a fraction of that. Earlier this year, analysts at Citigroup bank described the travel firm's shares as "worthless".

Thomas Cook later announced it was in advanced talks with its banks and largest shareholder, China's Fosun.

an extra £200m, which it was unable to do.

The company's boss, Peter Fankhauser, said the firm had "worked exhaustively" to salvage the rescue package and it was "deeply distressing" that it could not be saved.

Where do I begin?

Let’s start in 2017, if we go back further we’ll be here forever!

I wrote a few blogs for laughs, thinking just my friends and family would be entertained by my stories online.

Nearly two years ago I wrote a very personal blog about my arranged marriage and spoke openly about feeling isolated, alone, dealing with marital trauma and then subsequent depression and attempted suicide.

This particular blog brought me to Birmingham and I shifted my backside from my comfortable life up north, Scunthorpe, to the Midlands in search for opportunities that the city could bring me.

Over the two years I’ve been writing, I never really had a vision.

As I mentioned I wanted to write the stories I told people into written word to reflect on when I was older.

Not all my blogs are brilliant but I guess it was trial and error.

2019 is when I began to hone in and even though I write less I write more honestly.

The topic and theme is usually around South Asian women, issues we face and also mental health. I’m not expert and what I write it based on my own experiences, which has made me relatable to readers.

I’m not writing for the gram followers or for attention, I write honest, true and sometimes raw feelings and no one really does this.

The fact many people have come to me to discuss their own issues has been overwhelming and also makes me feel less alone.

If my articles can help one person open up then I feel like I’m making an impact and a real difference.

Don’t get me wrong, I add my own mix of humour and human observations into the mix, it’s best to just be authentic and yourself!

Over15,000 objections have been listed against plans to tear down a major flyover in Birmingham close to the site of the Commonwealth Games athletes village.

The £27.1 million project, which would see the removal of the flyover on the A34 in Perry Barr in favour of putting all traffic onto a dual carriageway at ground level, will be voted on by Birmingham City Council cabinet members in the next few days.

However, transport boss, Councillor Waseem Zaffar, has admitted the scheme is now likely to go ahead as an alternative has not been found.

The vote follows months of controversy, with papers showing that eleven petitions totalling 15,273 signatures have been handed to the council opposing the removal of the flyover.

The consultation responses followed a similar trend, with 81 per cent of respondents not supporting changes to the A34 Walsall Road/A453 Aldridge Road and 61 per cent opposing changes to the A34/A4040 junction layout.

The A34 takes motorists from Walsall and Great Barr into Birmingham city centre.

It passes both the Alexander Stadium and the proposed games village on the former Birmingham City University Perry Barr campus.

Speaking following the publication of the papers, cabinet member for environment and transport,

Councillor Waseem Zaffar, said he was keen to thank those who had taken time to respond to the consultation.

But he added that no suitable alternative proposals had been suggested to the council and, as such, they would be going ahead with plans to remove the flyover.

He said: “We want to first of all thank everybody that participated in the consultation. And the other democratic ways of contacting the council and partners.

"It’s very very important that people do contribute to these processes.

“Before we had a consultation I made it very clear that this isn’t a referendum, this is about getting the opinions of people about how such a change could impact on them, and whether the proposals were right.

"And also an opportunity

for people to send in counter proposals on how we can continue to move people around through the city and through Perry Barr in a sustainable way.

“But with the changes that are coming, with 5,000 new homes being built, half a billion pounds being invested into Perry Barr, it’s going to see major major changes.

"And one of the biggest changes it will see is the Aldridge old connection from the A453 onto the A34 dual carriageway is being taken away because of the new homes that are being built on that particular site.

"And also, in line with that closure, also connecting people across Perry Barr with the One Stop shopping centre.

"So we’ve decided that we’re going to proceed ahead with this – we think it’s the right proposal.

“We have considered a range of other proposals but, in order to keep people moving efficiently through Perry Barr, in particular on public transport and having that cycling offer that we will have, we will not be able to offer all these real alternatives for sustainable forms of transport through the north of the city without removing this flyover.

“And we are very confident that we will achieve this with minimal disruption, we will achieve this within the time allocated that we need to achieve it for the big event in 2022, and we will achieve it to benefit the residents in the short, medium and long term.”

East Midlands contestant Priya O’Shea is the latest to be eliminated from the Channel 4 Great British Bake off show.

This year Diwali is celebrated on Sunday 27th October 2019. But how did the festival start? What’s the significance of the festival?

How do individuals celebrate the special day?

Deepawali, Deepavali, or Diwali is the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals. It is the festival of lights: deep means "light" and avali "a row" to become "a row of lights." Diwali is marked by days of celebration, which literally illuminates the country with its brilliance and dazzles people with its joy and light.

The Diwali festival occurs in late October or early November. It falls on the 15th day of the Hindu month of Kartik, so it varies every year. What remains constant is the celebration of life, its enjoyment, and a sense of goodness.

Historically, Diwali can be traced back to ancient India.

It most likely began as an important harvest festival.

However, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali.

Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage

of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, with Lord Vishnu. Others use it as a celebration of her birthday, as Lakshmi is said to have been born on the newmoon day of Kartik.

Diwali also commemorates the return of Lord Rama (along with Ma Sita and Lakshman) from his 14-year-long exile and vanquishing the demonking Ravana. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and set off firecrackers.

In each legend, myth, and story of Deepawali lies the significance of the victory of good over evil. It is with each Deepawali and the lights that illuminate our homes and hearts that this simple truth finds new reason and hope.

From darkness into light—the light empowers individuals to commit ourselves to good deeds and brings us closer to divinity. During Diwali,

lights illuminate every corner of India, and the scent of incense sticks hangs in the air, mingled with the sounds of firecrackers, joy, togetherness, and hope.

Diwali is celebrated around the globe. Outside of India, it is more than a Hindu festival; it's a celebration of SouthAsian identities. If you are away from the sights and sounds of Diwali, light a diya, sit quietly, shut your eyes, withdraw the senses, concentrate on this supreme light, and illuminate the soul.

Diwali means 'row of lights'. This is because Hindus, Sikhs and Jains decorate houses, shops and public places in India with small oil lamps called Divas.

These lamps are often placed in rows in windows, doors and outside buildings as decoration. Electric lights too are used in Diwali displays and fireworks are also a big part of the Diwali celebrations.

Diwali is a time for giving and receiving gifts.

Traditionally, sweets and dried fruit are exchanged.

Bandi Chhor Divas

Bandi Chhor is also celebrated on 27th October 2019 this year.

When Hindus and others celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, Sikhs remember the release from prison and return to Amritsar of the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind in 1619.

The name Bandi Chhor Divas means liberation of prisoner’s day.

Bandi Chhor Divas -- the Sikh celebration at this time of year that commemorates the release from the prison at Gwalior Fort (in Madhya Pradesh, India) of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, in 1619. As his release occurred around the time of Diwali, the celebrations took a new connotation for the Sikhs,

making it a commemoration of the "Day of Liberation."

Sikhs do not only celebrate the release of Guru Hargobind, but also his action to secure the release of 52 other kings and princes who were also locked up in the prison by India's Mughal ruler of the time, Jehangir. This emperor long had an antagonistic relationship with this new religious community rising from within his kingdom, and so much so that he had ordered and carried out the execution of Guru Arjun, the fifth Guru of the Sikhs and Guru Hargobind's predecessor. When Jehangir was eventually convinced to release

Guru Hargobind, the Guru indicated that he would only leave when the other prisoners were also set free.

Jehangir would offer a countercondition: "whoever can hold on to the Guru's cloak can be released."

On this condition, the Guru had a cloak made with 52 strands on to which each other prisoner could hold and walk out of the fort with the Guru. And, in doing so, he secured the release of his fellow inmates.

The story reminds Sikhs of freedom and human rights and this is what they celebrate on Bandi Chhor Divas.

Mrs World Punjaban UK 2019 Announced The journey to crown two women concluded.

Two women walked away with the Mrs World Punjaban UK 2019 crowned at the presidious Grand Finale organised by Channel Punjab Shaan Punjab Di. Ravneet Kaur from Leicester won the over 35 year old category and for the under 35 year old category was Shalini Gulati. The first runner ups were Kameljeet Kaur Sembhi and Amardeep Kaur. Second runner ups were Nisha Chohan and another Amardeep Kaur from Newcastle.

Mrs World Punjaban UK was a concept of Channel Punjab Shaan Punjab Di, the first crowning was in Patiala Punjab and the second in Dubai. Over the past three months fifteen finalists have preformed individual and group tasks, these will all be culminated together and form the first Punjabi reality show. Which will be aired on Channel Punjab now available internationally via YouTube. “ I am really proud to be awarded the prestigious honour of becoming Mrs World Punjaban UK 2019.

I feel empowered and would really like to reach out to as many people as possible not just nationally

but internationally, I feel nothing is impossible with hard work, dedication and determination. Punjabis are great and together we can make a real difference to our world. I want to promote my rich and colourful Punjabi culture and show that women are strong and capable of achieving anything if they put their mind, heart and soul into it.

I love children and my focus will be on children, that they should know our Punjabi language not only speaking but reading and writing as well. This will allow our

Tasty Recipes & for Diwali 2019 Easy potato and pea samosas

Black dal

Ingredients • 3 tbsp vegetable oil • ½ tsp mustard seeds • 60g/2½oz chopped onion • 1 tsp finely chopped ginger • 60g/2½oz frozen peas • 1 tbsp ground coriander • 1 tsp ground cumin • ¼ tsp red chilli powder • ½-¾ tsp garam masala • 1-2 tsp dried mango powder, to taste (alternatively, use juice of 1/2 a lemon) • salt, to taste • splash water • 600g/1lb 5oz potatoes, peeled, boiled until soft and crushed into large lumps • 4 tbsp chopped fresh coriander leaves • packet ready-made filo pastry • 5 tbsp melted butter, for brushing Method 1. Heat the oil in a small non-stick pan and fry the mustard seeds for about ten seconds, or until they begin to splutter.

2. Add the onion and ginger and cook for 2-3 minutes over a high heat.

Add the peas, stir well and add the spices, mango powder, salt and a splash of water. (If using lemon juice, add this instead of the water.) Cook for 1-2 minutes, then add the potatoes and coriander and cook for 2-3 minutes. Taste and adjust

the seasoning.

3. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.

4. Unroll the pastry and cover with cling film and a damp tea towel. Peel off one piece and keep the rest covered so that it doesn't dry out. Lay the pastry sheet flat on a clean surface and brush with melted butter. Fold in one third of the pastry lengthways towards the middle. Brush again with the butter and fold in the other side to make a long triplelayered strip.

5. Place one rounded teaspoon of the filling mixture at one end of the strip, leaving a 2cm/1in border. Take the right corner and fold diagonally to the left, enclosing the filling and forming a triangle. Fold again along the upper crease of the triangle. Keep folding in this way until you reach the end of the strip. Brush the outer surface with more butter.

Place onto a baking sheet and cover while you make the rest of the samosas. Sprinkle over a few sesame seeds, if using.

6. Bake in the centre of the oven for 30-35 minutes, or until golden and crisp, turning halfway through the cooking time.

7. To serve, place the samosas onto a large serving plate with a bowlful of chutney.

Ingredients • 150g/5oz urid dal • 50g/2oz mung beans • 480ml/17fl oz water • 3 tbsp olive oil • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 2 green chillies, finely chopped • ¼ tsp ground turmeric • ½ tsp ground cumin • ½ cinnamon stick, broken into pieces • 4 cloves • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 large tomato, chopped • 1 tsp caster sugar • squeeze lemon juice • small handful fresh chopped coriander Method 1. Place the black and green lentils into a medium

saucepan, add the water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until tender.

Drain, then mash the lentils and set aside.

2. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan, add the onion and fry until it starts to colour. Add the garlic and fry for a few seconds.

3. Stir in the finely chopped chillies, turmeric, cumin, cinnamon, cloves, salt and freshly ground black pepper and cook for one minute, stirring constantly.

4. Stir in the chopped tomato, the sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice and cook for 2-3 minutes.

5. Add the mashed lentils and bring to the boil.

6. Stir in a large handful of chopped coriander and serve.

Phones go off, a bath or shower, followed by relaxation technique slows the brain down and alerts it that it’s time to shut off. Brewers Yard city living scheme takes next step A

mbitious plans for a major multi million pound city living development at the heart of City of Wolverhampton have moved onto the next stage.

The Brewers Yard scheme is proposed for 10 acres of brownfield land neighbouring University of Wolverhampton’s Springfield Campus.

It is a joint venture between developer Court Collaboration, City of

Wolverhampton Council and West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).

Heads of Terms have been agreed on the sale of City of Wolverhampton’s Culwell Street site to Court Collaboration, subject to approval by the council’s Cabinet, as the first phase of the development. WMCA are working towards securing the remainder of the land necessary for the development.

Court Collaboration is also set to start pre-planning application discussions with the council, with works set to start on site in 2020.

Brewers Yard will see a mixture of 1,200 city houses and apartments, and 60,000 sq ft of new retail and commercial space, designed by award winning Glancy Nicholls Architects.

The scheme is aiming to deliver high quality, affordable living in what will be some of City of Wolverhampton’s tallest towers, set alongside outstanding public realm.

The development will also sit just a few hundred metres from the city’s new transport Interchange, providing quick, direct access to Birmingham, London and Manchester.

The expected economic benefit to the City of Wolverhampton from the scheme is £250 million (Gross Development Value).

“It is part of £4.4 billion of investment in the City of Wolverhampton that is also delivering jobs and opportunities for local people of all ages.”

The Brewers Yard scheme is also set to deliver hundreds of permanent new jobs, more than 1,000 construction jobs, and built environment apprenticeship and training opportunities for University of Wolverhampton students.

Car makers are scrapping handbrakes and replacing them with electronic systems The traditional lever handbrake looks set to be consigned to the annals of nostalgia – with several major carmakers already declaring themselves handbrake-free.

New research suggests mechanical handbrakes will join the likes of manual windows, chokes and cassette players as a relic from motoring’s past.

Fewer than a third of new models in 2019’s showrooms are fitted with manual handbrakes – while Land Rover, Jaguar, Mercedes, Porsche and Lexus no longer sell any models with them in place.

For a number of years manufacturers have favoured electronic parking devices and simple switches or push-buttons to engage the rear brakes.

Most such electronic handbrakes disengage automatically when the vehicle pulls away – and more advanced versions offer

technology which assists with hill-starts.

The CarGurus study of 32 car makers suggests Suzuki and Dacia remain the only mainstream manufacturers to have a traditional handbrake fitted across their full range.

Only 30% of new models brought to market this year have done so with a handbrake – a 7% reduction on 2018.

While sceptics may lament the loss of a handbrake they can physically feel, these modern solutions bring new safety benefits to the table. It’s not as easy to accidentally partially engage the brake when it’s an ‘on-off’ system, for example.

They’re also seen as spacesaving, appealing to today’s gadget-savvy car buyer keen to put the room to better use for a phone charger or extra cupholder.

While we’ve already waved so long to the likes of chokes and

starting handles – the muchloved wind-up window is all but extinct in today’s new car market.

And as automotive technology creeps ever-closer, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility to expect vehicle staples like steering wheels, pedals or key-operated ignitions and doors to be next on the horizon for replacement.

In fact, earlier this week, it emerged that some of the world's largest self-driving carmakers want regulators in the US to remove the requirement for steering wheels, pedals and mirrors.

Uber, Waymo Honda and Lyft are among the companies developing autonomous cars which want the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recognise self-driving cars as a separate vehicle class.

Possible Khan and Brook Fight in 2020

There could be a possible major showdown between Amir Khan and Kell Brook in 2020.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has said "I still want to make that fight. I'll give it one more roll of the dice,".

"I will tell them: 'Guys, spring 2020, let's do it'.

"Hopefully we can get it over the line."

Khan blew away Billy Dib in four rounds in July, but Brook has not fought since December when he outpointed Michael Zerafa.

"He wants to fight in December," Hearn said about Brook who has recently returned to training in Sheffield.

"He wants the big fights.

The Commonwealth Powerlifting Federation currently serves the major Powerlifting event for Commonwealth nations, the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships.

This event is held biannually.

So far, the CPF have successfully run seven Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships, the first in 2005 in Northumberland, England. The second, in 2007 in Christchurch, New Zealand, the third in Pune, India in 2009. 2011 saw the fourth in Bournemonth, England and the fifth event was held in Auckland New Zealand, with over 450 lifters (a combined Commonwealth

Football Fans Await News on European Games After Collapse of Thomas Cook

The collapse of Thomas Cook has left football fans waiting on whether tickets for upcoming European away games will be valid.

The holiday company, which went into liquidation, failed to secure £250m needed to keep it afloat.

There are a number of Premier League clubs who use Thomas Cook Sport for Champions League and Europa League match packages.

Those clubs are now working on contingency plans as they face European away games in the coming weeks.

Manchester United advertise home match breaks, stadium tours and Europe away matches with Thomas Cook on their website. They have Europa League games away to AZ Alkmaar on 3 October, Partizan Belgrade on 24 October and Astana, of Kazakhstan, on 28 November.

United said of their travel partners: "They have pre-sold a small number of tickets and hospitality for some home matches this season, along with travel packages to two upcoming Uefa Europa League away games.

"As soon as we were aware of their potential insolvency, we started to work through

Chelsea, who also use Thomas Cook as their travel partners, said in a statement that they would pay for alternative travel arrangements for fans who had booked for the Champions League game against Lille in France on 2 October.

Chelsea will also cover the costs of travel for fans who booked through Thomas Cook for the Premier League game at Southampton on 6 October.

Liverpool, who have Champions League fixtures at Genk on 23 October and RB Salzburg on 10 December, said fans travelling to home games would also be affected.

The club said: "Thomas Cook sells 360 hospitality packages for each of our home games at Anfield.

"We are currently assessing the impact of Thomas Cook ceasing trading and the impact for those supporters who have purchased packages from Thomas Cook.

Once we have those details from Thomas Cook we will update supporters.".

Fans of Formula 1, Six Nations and England cricket are also thought to have been affected.

Villa Park plans get approved for new grounds

Demolition to Villa Village has now been approved by Birmingham City Council in readiness for yet more development thanks to owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris.

Aston Villa's grand plans to knock down the ticket office, club shop and Academy building have been given the green light.

As reported earlier this year, Villa's wealthy owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris put plans forward to Birmingham City Council to

redevelop Villa Park while particularly focusing on land at the rear of the North Stand .

The pair want the site cleared, according to the council, "in readiness to accommodate new development which could accommodate a super store, museum and a possible hotel".

After lodging plans, the council has given Villa the go-ahead to start demolition work. It'll mean the former Stumps building - which is

used as a Family Fun Zone on match days - will be bulldozed along with the ticket office and Villa store.

"None of the existing buildings are locally or statutorily listed and are of little architectural merit. I therefore raise no objection to the principle of the demolition of these buildings," a council document read prior to demolition approval.

The briefing added: "Aston Villa Football Club is proposing to move the

ticket office/merchandise store into temporary units elsewhere on site. It is intended that the footprint of this building will be used as excess capacity for car parking on match days. The Academy building football pitch will continue to be used in an outdoor capacity following its demolition.

"The site would be left in a tidy condition and enclosed with appropriate fencing to secure the site, pending its future redevelopment. This will

ensure that the site has an acceptable appearance taking into account the residential nature of the surrounding area."

Villa's owners continue to plough cash into improving the club's infrastructure.

Vast improvements were made all around Villa Park and Bodymoor Heath in the summer while, last weekend, fans enjoyed the grand opening of The Gaslamp - a swanky new hospitality lounge situated in the North Stand.

Bains wins Gold at 2019 Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships Warwick athlete Karenjeet Kaur Bains returned to the international stage representing Team England for the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in Canada.

The championships took place at St John’s, Newfoundland on Canada’s far eastern coast, from Sunday until September 21, with Bains competing in the under63kg junior women’s class.

Bains took the gold in the squat, deadlift and silver in the bench and won gold over all.

The 23-year-old won over the judges with her amazing performance and has since improved from the World Championships in Sweden where she became the first British Sikh female to represent Great Britain.

Bains achieved an impressive 387.5kg across three disciplines including a 140kg squat, 80kg bench press and 167.5kg deadlift to finish ninth.

Bains is no stranger to competing at the Commonwealth Games having first represented Team England aged 19 at the championships in Vancouver in 2015, where she broke two British records and placed fifth against many athletes four years her senior.

Bains, who credits her rapid rise to the coaching of her father, Kuldip Singh Bains, a former bodybuilder and powerlifter, is hoping to trump her performance by securing a podium finish and massive personal best in Canada.
