"Horses bring me immeasurable amounts of happiness. I've always loved them and always will and I hope to carry on and keep riding." She beat the likes of professional event rider Sophie van der Merwe and Olympic cycling champion turned amateur jockey Victoria Pendleton. "There are no words to describe this - I'm lost for words," Mellah said "When I passed the post I couldn't believe it, and then I saw all my family and friends and started crying. I am quite competitive, so I wanted to win this race, but I never expected to. "Horses bring me immeasurable amounts of happiness. I've always loved them and always will and I hope to carry on and keep riding." Jockey Frankie Dettori told BBC Sport: "I watched the race. It's incredible, unbelievable. I met her yesterday and she is such a sweet person." Mellah learned to ride at the Ebony Horse Club charity in Brixton. A teenager from South London will be the UK’s first Muslim jockey to ride out at Glorious Goodwood on Thursday. Khadijah Mellah , an
18-year-old student will appear in a competitive horse race while wearing a hijab. She will ride in the allfemale Magnolia Cup - an amateur jockey's charity race - alongside former Olympian turned jockey Victoria Pendleton, BBC presenter Alexis Green and TV personality Vogue Williams. "From a young age, I have wanted to be the person that people look up to," Khadijah told BBC Sport. "I have already started receiving other messages from Muslim girls and it makes me really happy to hear from all these people that I'm affecting positively." She has been training at Newmarket in the build-up to the Goodwood Festival. "People have been very welcoming to the prospect of having a new face in the jockey industry," she said. "I enjoy having conversations about people who are genuinely curious. "Sometimes it's hard explaining my background over and over again to lots of different people, but generally I like explaining where I've come from and how I've got to where I have." The number of female British Muslim Jockeys is in
"single digits" according to the Muslim Women's Sport Foundation. "When I ride out in Newmarket I do try to spot any other women of colour and there was only one in over 200 riders," she said. "But it doesn't faze me; it means that I end up talking to loads of people and making great connections, so I'm happy. "It makes me feel sort of blessed because not many people get the opportunity to represent. It adds a little meaning to life." A documentary called Riding A Dream will feature about Khadijah’s journey in which she says: "There's quite a stereotype around Muslim
girls and them not being able to follow their sporting passions and dreams." Khadijah first joined Brixton's Ebony Horse Club, when her mum came across a leaflet in a local mosque. Khadijah has balanced studying for her A-levels and a part-time job, as well as continuing to volunteer and mentor younger riders at Ebony Horse Club every week. "My introduction to race horses started off a bit rocky," she said. "They were quite scary at first. I was a nervous wreck before my first gallop. It was quite a shock how fast you go. When you're on a racehorse you feel absolutely everything."
Khadijah says she is feeling "confident" about the race, mixed with "nervousness" about the scale of the event. "I'm very competitive so it would mean the world if I did come first, and I feel like a lot of people would be celebrating if I did - the support behind me would be great," she said. "I never thought I'd have a future in racing at all. But now that I've been introduced to it and I've been riding racehorses for the past couple of weeks, I've fallen in love with it and I'm definitely going to keep at it. "And maybe one day get into big races and become an amateur or an apprentice."
After 12 years at Mosaic Haseena Lockhat has taken the decision to step down as chair and pass on the baton. At the recent Mosaic event Haseena delivered an emotional speech documenting her experience & journey with mosaic since joining Mosaic West Midlands in 2009 and her role as a Chair for Mosaic West Midlands. Haseena has always been a passionate supporter of Mosaic from the beginning, she attended a dinner back in 2017 where she met Pinky Lilani who inspired her to achieve and remains an inspiration to Haseena to this day. Haseena said: “Pinky must have seen something in me that night, that she connected with, and she kept in touch, encouraging and involving me in various initiatives, including asking me to be an Ambassador on the Women of the Future Initiative that she had set up, to encourage and mentor aspiring women and girls from the Asian community. But she did more than that, she introduced me to people that she thought would be beneficial to me in my personal development, including John O’Brian, the Founding MD of Mosaic, who three months later, invited me to become a part of The Prince of Wales Mosaic Muslim Mentoring Initiative. I was one of a small number of people invited to attend the intimate launch of Mosaic at Clarence House, hosted by HRH Prince Charles himself!
What inspired me more than anything was the commitment that Prince Charles himself made in wanting to make a difference to the lives of young muslims- post 7/7. The launch of Mosaic West Midlands in 2009, tied in nicely with motherhood, …as I was also able to continue my voluntary mentoring locally, whilst also being part of the Regional Leadership Group”. In August 2015, Haseena was invited to take up the Chairship for Mosaic WM. Haseena said: “When I accepted this privilege, it was with the personal conviction that - together with my Mosaic and Regional Leadership Group Colleagues, we would develop and deliver an ambitious vision, around mentor recruitment as well as getting Mosaic as a brand, recognized across the region, and we worked tirelessly to do this”. I am proud that under my leadership in the first couple of years we recruited over 500 volunteer mentors who mentored over 2500 young people across more than 60 schools in the West Midlands Region. Mosaic won 2 awards locally, and was one of 2 chosen charities nominated by Love Brum to receive some money in 2016.” Haseena has also been honoured with an award at the British Muslim Awards in 2016 for Services to communities. In 2016, Mosaic was fully supported under the initiative of
The Prince’s Trust which in itself had it’s challenges ensuring that Mosaic still had an identity. Haseena said: “The Princes Trust is no doubt a well-established organisation with a world class reputation, but it now has to shake its’ reputation as being an organization that serves the white middle class. To do this, it needs to be ENGAGE, LISTEN, HEAR, LEARN, CONNECT and MOST importantly, CHANGE what it does, through ITS’ ACTIONS - NOT just through words, or tick boxes”. Through the personal links and networks of Haseena and the Regional Leadership Group colleagues we were able to bring in new footfall, and the Prince’s Trust was able to connect with communities who, for a variety of reasons, have never engaged with
the Prince’s Trust before. Haseena also added: “I know that were it not for the inspirational role models that I HAD, and that I HAVE around me, including my parents – and especially my Mum, who ALWAYS encouraged me when my chips were down; my lecturer Paul Orsmond at University, who told me I would go far; and my now ex-husband who encouraged me to push myself, and do WAY OUT things like writing a book on FGM, and accept my first Non Exec Board position at the Home Office, - when I was tempted to walk away, thinking others would do a better job than I could. “I HAD relatable role models who encouraged me and who believed in me and saw my potential – even when I didn’t.
Without these individuals, I KNOW I would NOT be standing here right now, with a career history, and life experiences that I am really proud of. “I AM Proud to be a MUSLIM , FEMALE, ASIAN, MUM of 2 lovely boys, with a SUCCESSFUL career, AMAZING opportunities, and a VERY BLESSED work life balance. Living in this country, we are fortunate that success does not have to be at the expense of culture, religion or identity. “If you believe in yourself, and have the right support, you really can achieve anything in life. And that is why I am so passionate about the work that Mosaic does.” To find about more and how to get involved visit: www. mosaicnetwork.co.uk

£10 million funding to kick start reopening of Black Country rail stations Plans to reopen two new railway stations on the Walsall to Wolverhampton line have moved a major step forward following the award of £10 million Government funding. The grant, from the Department for Transport (DfT), will go towards the construction of new stations at Darlaston and Willenhall. Further costs are being met from the region’s HS2 Connectivity Fund. Original stations in Darlaston and Willenhall closed in 1965 and only through services have used the line since then. Now passenger services will resume on the line offering residents vastly
improved connections to Wolverhampton, Walsall and Birmingham New Street. They will also unlock land for housing, industrial and commercial development along the rail route. Andy Street, the Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “I am delighted that our ambition to reopen the Walsall to Wolverhampton railway line to passengers has moved a significant step closer with this latest funding from government. “Not only will the money help us to build high-class stations at both Darlaston and Willenhall, but these new stations will help drive significant regeneration of the Walsall to
Wolverhampton corridor. “By getting people out of their cars and onto this re-opened passenger line we are tackling both congestion and the climate change emergency at the same time. This announcement really is brilliant news.” Cllr Ian Ward, WMCA portfolio holder for transport and leader of Birmingham City Council said: “The reopening of stations in Darlaston and Willenhall will encourage growth in industry and jobs in the Black Country as well as better linking communities to opportunities elsewhere. But this is just a part of our plans to transform rail service and public transport across the West Midlands. “We are making progress with reopening Camp Hill
line in Birmingham, creating better connections to the planned HS2 stations and seeing investment in more services, more capacity and better facilities across the region’s rail network.” Both stations will have long-stay car parks, with 300 spaces provided at Darlaston and 150 spaces at Willenhall. A public consultation earlier this year found 93 per cent of people rated the proposed designs as good or very good, with many calling for the area’s lockmaking industrial heritage to be reflected in artwork or architecture. Planning applications are due to be submitted later this year and it is hoped to start work next year with a view to reopening the line to passengers by the end of 2021.

The UK’s biggest South Asian Festival LONDON MELA The 17th edition of the London Mela is back with a bang as it returns to Southall Park for a jampacked weekend of South Asian music, dance, food and culture. Southall, the heart of the South Asian community since the 1950’s, is a thriving hub of culture all year round, but when the Mela comes to town it goes one further and becomes the biggest and best South Asian festival this side of Mumbai. The Mela is best known for its adventurous, genre-crossing collaborations with contemporary artists and 2019’s festival raises the bar. Saturday sees Canadianpop-reggae-r&b-fusion artist Raghav headline the festival, performing his top tracks from his three studio albums including his smash hit Angel Eyes. Specially commissioned by the London Mela, The Great British Desi Collaboration is a collective of the hottest current independent Asian artists including F1rstman, H-Dhami, Juggy D and Mumzy Stranger who will all be hitting up the mainstage with their hit single ‘Dance’ (that has had over two million views on YouTube) and many more. In 2018 legendary producer, composer and musician Kuljit Bhamra MBE also known for his
work on Bend it like Beckham, Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom, and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, explored the Sounds of Southall, looking at the origins of Bhangra Music through three generations. 2019 sees its second and final instalment with the Sounds of Smethwick, the UK’s second home of Bhangra sounds, featuring Shin (from the band DCS), Kulwant Bhambra & Sardara Gill (Apna Sangeet) and Balbir Bhujhangy (Bhujhangy). The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “London Mela is a wonderful showcase of South Asian culture, with its wide range of music, dance, food and games. It’s a real celebration of the community’s impact on our city, a key date in the capital’s calendar and another great example of how London is open to all.” For full line-up including dance artists, information on the family area, fun fair and more, visit www.londonmela.org The London Mela is produced by Remarkable Productions and supported by Arts Council England, Mayor of London, Ealing Council and Nutkhut. Cannock's Chase Park sold for £1.45m The home of Cannock Cricket & Hockey Club has been sold for £1.45 million. The site was bought during an online auction last night but the identity of the buyer was not revealed. Bidding started at around £600,000 at 3.50pm before reaching its selling price at 5.46pm after a bidding war eventually came down to two potential buyers. The Chase Park site, in Church Lane, Hatherton, was locked up by receivers last month forcing the cricket and hockey teams to train and play games at other venues. It was described as an "exceptional lot" by digital auction platform BidX1, which described the site as follows: "Cannock Cricket and Hockey Club, offered on behalf of fixed charge receivers, is a freehold sports ground and pavilion arranged across approximately 25 acres. The grounds include two cricket pitches, three floodlit artificial hockey pitches (one water and two sand based), a crown green bowling green, two tennis courts and a large car park. "The sizeable pavilion
contains a bar with capacity for 270 people, changing rooms, gym, three squash courts, a restaurant and banqueting suite." Why was the site locked up? The ground was locked up by receivers from Duff & Phelps of London Ltd
on June 26 after a dispute between developer Craig Watts Ltd and Sport England. The wrangle centred on the length of lease being offered to the clubs as part of a proposed development to turn the under-used pavilion and bar into apartments while building

new clubhouses for the cricket and hockey clubs. Sport England, which holds a legal charge on a hockey pitch on the land, initially refused to accept anything less than a 15year lease for the clubs while Craig Watts Ltd was only prepared to offer a 10year lease.
Hussain sisters, 39 year old Mhreen and 37 year old Sabeen have recently completed their Access course with Distinction at Bournville College, which takes them a step closer to becoming teachers. Access to Higher Education Diploma is a one year qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. Before starting their Access course, the sisters, who have eight children between them, were fulltime mothers and were involved in community work in their spare time. They will be attending University of Birmingham in September, which is ranked 14th in the country according to The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide. Sabeen has dreamt of going to
university since she was 7, when she used to travel passed Aston University on the bus. Now she is excited to be fulfilling her dream. Mhreen was inspired at primary school to become a teacher and now that her children are grownup, she too is fulfilling a lifetime ambition. When asked what advice they would give to future Access students, they both agreed by saying “Attitude is important. It’s an intense course, but enjoyable and worth it.” They were keen to stress “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You learn more from your mistakes than from your successes.” Think an Access course is for you? Visit: https://www.sccb. ac.uk/courses/access-to-highereducation

South Asian Heritage Month Launch London, Monday 22nd July – The concept launch of South Asian Heritage Month was held at the House of Commons. The British South Asian community make up 3 million of the UK population, with 1 in every 20 people living in the UK being of South Asian heritage. The evening consisted of spoken word artists, audio visual displays and other live performances, as well as speeches from key figures within the community, who discussed education, arts, culture and commemoration with the goal of helping people to better understand the diversity of present-day Britain and improving levels of social cohesion between the various communities. The month comes as a result of a number of
initiatives over the past ten years, including a series of commissioned programmes by the BBC in 2017 to mark the 70th anniversary of the Partition of India. The campaign is being led by The Faiths Forum for London, The Grand Trunk Project and the Partition Commemoration Campaign. Dr. Binita Kane, a lung doctor from Manchester featured in the award winning BBC1 documentary My Family, Partition and Me, where second and third generation British Asians were taken back to South Asia to explore their family stories during the time of Partition and has been campaigning for Partition to be commemorated ever since. “The Partition of India was
one of the most important historical events in the 20th Century and has shaped much of modern day multicultural Britain” “‘I was ashamed that even with such a personal connection, I knew little about this and I had learned nothing about it in school. I felt compelled to raise the profile and we are now also campaigning to have Partition History taught on the school curriculum.” “I hope that South Asian Heritage Month will stimulate a much-needed conversation about this important part of our national history but also be a celebration of the incredible influence that South Asia has had on British Culture.” Jasvir Singh OBE is cochair of the Faiths Forum
for London, an interfaith organisation based in London which represents the interests of the nine major faith traditions. He is also the chair for City Sikhs, which provides a voice for progressive Sikhs. In 2017, he founded The Grand Trunk Project to bring together the Hindu, Muslim and Sikh communities in the UK to promote much needed dialogue around their shared cultural and historical heritage, as well as celebrating the differences. The project marked 70 years since the Partition of the Indian Subcontinent by organising thirteen events across the country took
place. Jasvir said: “As people from British South Asian backgrounds, we need to be able to own our history and heritage. The purpose of South Asian Heritage Month is to do precisely that. It’s a fantastic way of ensuring that we can mark, commemorate and celebrate South Asian history and culture, as well as look at the diverse links between British and South Asia over the centuries to the present day.” “We cannot ignore the lasting impact that Empire has had, but the heritage and history of the region goes back many centuries before
the birth of the British East India Company. There is also much more to South Asian identity than saris, samosas and sitars.” “At a time when the country appears deeply divided, South Asian Heritage Month will help us to focus on the diverse nature of that identity as well as explore and celebrate all that makes us who we are, British and South Asian alike.” Look out for further events around the country and keep up to date with all the news by following @ LondonFaiths and @TheGTP on Twitter and our hashtag #SouthAsianHeritageMonth.
for various charities including Macmillan and the Stroke Association. The JOGLE challenge Every year, the JOGLE route is commonly attempted by cyclists. Only very few runners have attempted to run between the two extreme points of the UK. The challenge starts on Monday 26th August with the aim of reaching the finishing line on Sunday 22nd September, a total of 28 days consecutive running. To keep things interesting, Barinderjit’s route has been adjusted to take in both the Great North Run (his 10th one); and also make an appearance at his regular Parkrun at Walsall
Arboretum. The Cause The rise of homelessness sees many people unable to access food easily. In 2013, 2 Sikh brothers from Walsall decided to take matters into their own hands and set up a charity to help the homeless and those in need. The charity (Midland Langar Sewa Society – MLSS) has seen phenomenal growth – all managed on a voluntary basis with a dedicated group of kindred spirits who provide langar ‘free kitchen’ – to those in need. Feeds take place across the UK, and internationally – sometimes reaching over 25000 meals per week. Food is distributed every single night by
volunteers of all ages – thanks purely to donations. This upholds the Sikh ethos of ‘Vand Shako’ – sharing with those around us. In 2019, Sikhs will be celebrating the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Barinderjit, felt this was the right year to attempt this run and raise money to support MLSS in their ongoing efforts to provide langar for all, treating everyone as equals. Usingh Bolt’s running career 52 half marathons, 40 full marathons and 5 ultra-marathons – a total of race 2000 miles across multiple terrains. In addition to this over 210 Parkruns and multiple shorter race distances. And not to forget all the training miles
USingh Bolt does JOGLE Who is USingh Bolt? This summer, Usingh Bolt – Barinderjit to his family and Barry to his friends, is taking on a huge challenge that has only been tackled by a few. Over 28 days, Usingh Bolt will be attempting to run the length of the nation – from John O Groats, to Lands End (JOGLE). Not an easy challenge whatsoever, but one fueled by a love of running, and the desire to raise much needed funds for a hugely worthy and valued cause. The Background Barinderjit Singh Cheema’s love of running started in 2006. He completed his first half marathon in 2006 with his inaugural Great North Run. His first full marathon took place in London in 2007. His initial intention was only ever to conquer one of each distance, however since this time Barinderjit is a regular on half marathons, marathons and even tackles ultra-marathons. His interest in running has not gone unnoticed and Barinderjit has featured on numerous news sites. As a turban wearing runner, Barinderjit is easily spotted amongst the crowds. Barinderjit’s home club is the Aldridge Running club, he also regularly takes part in the weekly Walsall Arboretum Parkrun. Whilst Barinderjit runs for the love of running, through his efforts he has raised over £32,000

Mum’s Cooking Inspired Announcing our newest Patron Son To Launch Meal Kits
I
nspired by his mums cooking a Leicester man quit his IT career and launched an online multimillion-pound business empire in meal kits. Ketan Varu used to have spicy curry kits sent to him by his mum when he was at Sheffield Hallam University 15 years ago which inspired him to launch his business Spicentice. The business, based in Craven Street, close to the Highcross shopping centre, Leicester, has gone on to sell more than three million spice kits offering a healthy and authentic taste of Indian family cooking. His packs include everything from chicken tikka masala spices to katsu curry kits, jalfrezi spices and balti kits. And they don’t just cover Indian dishes. They also make kits for meals like Chinese and southern fried
chicken, fajita, chilli con carne and paella. They now sell more than 1,000 packs a day, keeping 12 people in work and now supplies national retailers such as Ocado and Marks and Spencer. The business has been such a success that the whole family is now part of the team, Ketan’s mum Manjula quit her sales assistant job at M&S to work with him, but she has been joined by his dad Ramnik, sister Tejal, and Ketan’s wife Mita. Ketan’s kits are gluten and additive free. The family has also benefited from a growing trend for families to shun ready meals and cook their dinners from scratch, partly inspired by the growing number of companies supplying complete, fresh meal kits online such as Hello Fresh and Gousto. Ketan said: “We wanted
to share our love of cooking from scratch, but we didn’t want to limit ourselves to just Indian food because we love all kinds of different foods. “We’ve had a great response from customers as we’ve widened the product range with many telling us they are broadening their cooking skills thanks to Spicentice. “We’ve just moved to bigger premises with a larger warehouse to process the increasing orders. “Mum and Dad are still involved with the company and are busier than ever which is great because our success started with their delicious recipes.” As a student Ketan followed his mum’s written recipes and his friends loved his cooking. Even when he went into IT he said colleagues told him his home-cooked lunches were brilliant. Now 42, he said: “Mum must’ve thought I’d starve as a student because she sent food parcels and little letters with recipes and bags of spices as soon as I’d left home. “I couldn’t cook at all in those days, but I followed mum’s advice and soon I was able to enjoy a taste of home cooking while away at uni. “My housemates all commented on the lovely smells coming from the kitchen so it was only a matter of time before I
Pensioner Dragged To The Ground A pensioner was flung to the ground by a mugger who made a grab for her handbag and left the victim with a fractured shoulder. The horrific attack took place broad daylight attack on Tuesday 30 July. CCTV footage captured from a house near the scene shows the moment the OAP walks along Stafford Road, Handsworth and is closely followed by the hooded thug. He then lunges for the bag, pulling it from the victim’s grip and dragging her to the ground. West Midlands Police have issued an urgent appeal to trace the thief, who is thought to have later discarded the stolen bank cards that were in the bag into a wheelie bin. A West Midlands Police appeal reads: "Know who this man is? We need to speak to him after a robber targeted a woman aged 72 in Birmingham. "She was walking along Stafford Road, Handsworth, when a man made a grab for her handbag just after 11am
started cooking up larger portions to share and pretty soon all of my student friends were asking if they could come to dinner. “Everyone loved mum and dad’s recipes. “At that stage I never dreamed it would become a business. It was only later while working as an IT project manager that I started to see the potential. “I would take in my home cooked food to heat at work for lunch and the same thing happened again with colleagues commenting on the smell and look of the food and asking to try some. “Soon I was having to cook up larger batches so everyone could try some and as I developed the idea for Spicentice I would test out some of the recipes on my colleagues.” Spicentice was launched in 2006, visiting farmers’ markets and food shows and things got serious when M&S placed an order for 80,000 units in 2008. Orders from other supermarkets followed including Asda and Sainsburys but Ketan wanted to build his own brand with Spicentice rather than sell his products under supermarket labels. When Mita quit her job as a primary school teacher, Ketan invested in new premises and a new e-commerce website and began to focus on online trading.
The United Kingdom Thalassaemia Society (UKTS) is proud to introduce their newest Patron Mr Adil Ray. Adil Ray OBE is best known as the star and creator of the hit BBC1 sitcom Citizen Khan. More on his work can be found via https://www. independent-360.com/presenters/ adil-ray/ . Adil is happy to support the society in its future work towards educating the public and improving treatment for patients living with thalassaemia. In a brief statement, Gabriel Theophanous, Chair of the UKTS, said that “the society is extremely grateful to Adil for his willingness to join the cause. The board of trustees and staff look forward to working with Adil in the future”. About the disorder: Beta thalassaemia major is an inherited blood disorder which affects the production of Haemoglobin, the oxygen carrying protein in the red blood cells. Patients with beta thalassaemia major either produce little or no haemoglobin which results in severe anaemia. As a result, children and adults with thalassaemia major require lifelong blood transfusions ranging from every 3-4 weeks, in order to stay alive. Thalassaemia mainly affects those coming from Northern Africa, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Asia and South East Asia. In the UK, there is a vast number of thalassaemia patients within the Asian community. It is important to note, that a
child only inherits thalassaemia if both parents carry the thalassaemia gene or trait. In the UK, there are approximately 200,000 carriers of the thalassaemia gene. While being a carrier does not cause any major health problems, if two carriers have a baby, there is a 25% chance the baby could inherited the more serious form of the disorder; beta thalassaemia major. Therefore, it is important to know whether the prospective mother and her partner carry the thalassaemia gene, before deciding to have a child. Blood donation is also an important aspect in the lives of thalassaemia patients. Currently only 6% of the blood donated in England comes from the ethnic minority communities. Apart from regular blood donation being a health benefit to the donor, each unit of blood donated, saves up to three lives. The pictures: Adil Ray (credits to Nick James)

Driver Business Boost for Acorns Dangerous Who Mowed Down Children's Hospice Black Officer is Jailed Country Appeal The recently launched Save Acorns Black Country Hospice Appeal has received a significant boost from the Black Country business community. The Nachural Summer Ball and Business Awards held at Wolverhampton Racecourse last month, were attended by 520 of the region’s movers and shakers. Over the course of the evening a total of £12,000 was raised for Acorns Children’s Hospice, the chosen charity. Event organiser, Ninder Johal, Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands, a former Black Country Chamber of Commerce President and current Black Country LEP board member presented the cheque to Chief Executive, Toby Porter, on Tuesday 30 July, following a visit and tour of the Black Country hospice where he met staff, volunteers and families. He said “There is such an incredible atmosphere at the hospice - it’s a warm and inviting place where the dedication and commitment of staff to the children and families is paramount. “It’s a great pleasure for me to be able to make this contribution on behalf of the region’s business community.
I wish the team every success in reaching the target needed to keep the hospice open. “We’ll do everything we can to keep the message out there among our members and as part of that we are pleased to make Acorns our Charity of the Year; covering the Birmingham Signature Awards, as well as next year’s Nachural Summer Ball.” The Save Acorns Black Country Children’s Hospice Appeal was launched by Acorns on the back of significant new funding locally and nationally from the NHS. The appeal sets out to raise £2 million to towards the Walsall hospice – which the charity had proposed for closure - until the full amount of new Government funding is reached. If the appeal is successful, it will lead to the closure proposal being withdrawn completely. Chief Executive, Toby Porter, said: “I attended the Nachural Summer Ball and Business Awards and was genuinely touched by the warm reaction from the business community towards Acorns and the work that we do. “We’re thrilled, not just with this amount, but the
fact that we’ll be working closely with Ninder over the next 12 months as charity of the year. Their generous support is hugely appreciated by everyone who is fighting hard to make sure that we are able to keep providing the essential services to all of those children and families in the Black Country. “There’s a long way to go, and we need as many people as possible to get behind our urgent appeal, share it with their friends, families and work colleagues, and help us reach our £2 million goal.” The lifeline for Acorns in the Black Country follows a
commitment of significant new NHS funding from Black Country healthcare commissioners and an earlier announcement by NHS England that they would double their central funding support to the country’s children’s hospices over the next five years. This lifeline means the Acorns children’s hospice in Walsall can stay open to Black Country children and families until at least the end of March 2020. A dangerous driver who drove into a police officer who had tried to stop him getting away has been jailed. Aqeel Ishtiaq, 28, of Shirley Road, Hall Green, jailed for five years and 10 months after he admitted dangerous driving, causing serious injury, handling stolen goods and driving while disqualified. Officers noticed Ishtiaq acting suspiciously near a Volkswagen Golf parked in Mill Lane in Solihull town centre and when quizzed he claimed he was not the driver. When he returned to the vehicle PC Spencer Lunn and other officers tried to stop him driving off by surrounding the vehicle. The officer, who was standing in front of the car, broke the car windscreen with his baton but Ishtiaq drove forward. PC Lunn collapsed in pain and suffered a serious injury to his knee. He was taken to hospital and discovered he suffered cruciate ligament damage to his knee in resulted him to be off work for 12 weeks. Birmingham Crown Court heard Ishtiaq was on bail at the time after a previous episode of prolonged bad driving in a stolen car on June 25, 2017 and was banned from the roads for 10 years and 11 months. In that incident he had tried to sell a stolen Audi A3, worth £30,000, to a man in Ireland and arranged to meet him at Birmingham Airport but the buyer became suspicious and contacted
the police. In passing sentence Judge Heidi Kubic said it had been a "professional and sophisticated" attempt to dispose of a stolen car and it was "prolonged bad driving placing other road users in severe danger." And referring to the incident with the police officer she said: "You did not respond to their verbal command to stop. "You started your engine and made a determined attempt to get away. "It was clear from the footage that you drove into Police Constable Lunn." Mohammed Afzal, defending, said "He stopped as soon as he realised he had caused the officer injury. "He had the good sense to realise what he had done."

The grouped figures shown above show the lowest and highest performing results for this model. Consult your dealer for information on specific examples. The fuel consumption you achieve, and CO2 produced, in real world conditions will depend upon a number of factors: including the accessories fitted (post registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure) used to measure fuel consumption and CO2 figures. These CO2 figures, however, are based on the outgoing test cycle NEDCeq (New European Driving Cycle Equivalent), calculated using an EC correlation tool which converts WLTP figures to NEDC. WE SHOULD MOOOVE ONTO TACKLING CLIMATE CHANGE
UN urges, people to eat less meat to in order to save the World. United Nations reports show that cutting food waste and eating less meat will reduce climate change by saving millions of square miles of land from being degraded by farming. The intergovernmental panel on climate change said that a quarter of the world’s ice-free land has been damaged by human activity, with soil eroding from agricultural fields up to 100 times faster than it forms.
The body, which advises governments on the science of climate change, called for more sustainable use of land. This includes tackling overconsumption, which it says has resulted in two billion adults more than a quarter of the world’s population being overweight. The intergovernmental panel said that about 25-30 per cent of food produced globally was wasted and that this accounted for 8-10 per cent of manmade greenhouse gas emissions. Governments were urged
to tackle food waste by encouraging “improved harvesting techniques”, educating consumers and ensuring better packaging, transport and storage on farms. If the world’s population moves to a more plant-based diet emissions could fall by up to 8 billion tonnes a year and human health would improve, the report says. It adds that food sourced from animals should come from “resilient, sustainable and low greenhouse gas emission systems”.

Broad Street bus changes as construction of Metro extension continues
Work to extend West Midlands Metro to Edgbaston is set to hit another milestone this September as construction ramps up on Broad Street. Cars, taxis and delivery vehicles will be able to access Broad Street between Sheepcote Street and Gas Street. The many hotels, bars, shops, restaurants and visitor attractions in the area and Five Ways roundabout remain open for business as usual. Work on the extension from Grand Central to Centenary Square is nearing completion with it anticipated to open in December 2019. The diversion is needed so work can start on the next leg of the line from Centenary Square, through Five Ways to Edgbaston. The extension is part of wider expansion of the Metro network which is owned by West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).
The extension is part of TfWM’s ten-year plan to manage congestion, by giving people more choices for travel along one of the busiest corridors in Birmingham. Cllr Waseem Zaffar, Birmingham City Council cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “Investment in Birmingham’s public transport network is bringing fantastic benefits to the city, connecting people across the region and making it easier for those travelling in the area to get around. “While works continue, it is important that people plan ahead and follow the travel advice provided to minimise disruption to their journeys.” For detailed information, maps and to check how your journey may be affected, please visit: www.networkwestmidlands.com/ fiveways

Shock fine for Wolverhampton Boris Elected business owner As New Prime Minister
City of Wolverhampton Council’s Public Protection team has caught up with a Wolverhampton business owner caught dumping rubbish on CCTV. Yesterday, (July 18) Kobir Ahmed attended court only to be brought to justice on a separate fly tipping case he delayed for three years. After arriving at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court, District Judge Wilkinson announced there was an outstanding warrant for the offender’s arrest regarding a fly tipping case dating back to 2016. The judge instructed Mr Ahmed to be taken to the cells while the case was
discussed. Kobir Ahmed, Director of Johnny Banqueting Ltd who operates Johnny Spice in Wolverhampton, was caught dumping eight bags of household waste, cardboard and a piece of wood at Shaw Road, next to the tip. Mr Ahmed returned to the court and pleaded guilty to the charge. District Judge Wilkinson said Ahmed chose to lie to the council attempting to pervert the course of justice delaying proceedings for three years. Councillor Steve Evans, Cabinet Member for City Environment, said: “Flytipping is a lazy and selfish
act, which costs taxpayers a lot of money to clean-up. “In this case, rubbish has been deliberately dumped and within an eye shot of the Shaw Road tip which is nothing but pure laziness. “I believe Mr Ahmed thought he had got away with it – but we have caught up with him. “As a council, we make it our priority to keep our city clean and tidy and will not tolerate this behaviour. “I am pleased with the result and the hard work has been carried out by our Public Protection team that has bought the offender to justice. “I strongly encourage
anyone who may know of others who take part in this selfish act, to get in touch and help us put a stop to fly tipping.” Mr Ahmed received a four-week prison sentence suspended for twelve months and a one-month curfew for which he will be tagged and monitored to be in his place of residence between the hours of 7pm and 6am. Mr Ahmed was ordered to pay £890 costs a £60 victim surcharge with a total amount of £950 to be paid by the 1 September 2019. Mr Ahmed will attend Wolverhampton Crown Court for the original case on August 15.

Bank Worker Stole Over £13k From Customer Accounts A Birmingham bank worker admitted to stealing more than £13,000 from customer accounts. Nevpreet Bains, 26, worked at Royal Bank of Scotland in Brindleyplace, escaped being sent to jail after a court heard she had been in an abusive relationship and was pressured to steal money from her former boyfriend. Bains, of Manley Way, Kempston, Bedford, was sentenced to an 18-month community order and to do 80 hours unpaid work and pay £600 compensation. Birmingham Crown Court heard she got the job through an agency. Bains had access to the bank's computer system and on November 11, 2017 she made a transaction payment of £7,500 from a customer account to another account. Four days later she made a similar transfer involving a different customer, in the sum of £6,000. A bank investigation revealed the defendant was responsible for the transactions and she was dismissed after the customers noticed the payments missing. Bains, made a full and frank admission saying she had been placed under pressure by her ex-boyfriend and that she feared he might cause her physical injury. She said she had been in a controlling relationship at
the time and that he had also been controlling her bank account. Bains said she had not personally benefited from the money that had been stolen. Nicholas Berry, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court, said inquiries revealed that the money had almost been immediately withdrawn into foreign currency. The investigation showed that there had been third party transactions from the defendant's account. Mr Berry said most of the money had gone although the bank were able to recover just over £500. In passing sentence Judge Roderick Henderson said: "This of course is still a serious offence but understandable why you felt forced into it." Gurdeep Garcha, defending, said Bains had
experienced a turbulent time in her life but had now moved to Bedford, severing herself from malign influences in her life. "At the time she was isolated and vulnerable," she said.

LegoLand discovery centre marks Peaky Blinders new series A miniature Lego version of the famous Garrion Tavern from the Peaky Blinders has arrived in Birmingham- to coincide with the premiere of season 5 in the city centre. The model of the public house has been created in Lego and was unveiled at the Legoland Discovery Centre in the city on Thursday 18th July the day the premier of series 5 was to be shown. It was created by master model builder Michelle Thompson and depicts the show's infamous pub setting, complete with the gang headquarters and a pile of illicit cash on the table. The counting room even includes a chalkboard for tallying bets and a working, opening safe for keeping their money away from mischievous hands. The model, created from more than 1,043 pieces, including eight Lego minifigures representing the characters from the show – most notably Thomas Shelby, who is featured driving a horse and cart which contains barrels covering up a secret supply of ammunition, akin to his character on the show. Ms Thompson said: "As Brummies here at the attraction we are big fans of the series, so we were excited to hear the premiere was taking place here in the city this week. "We thought it was only fitting
to pay homage to the series by recreating one of the famous locations in Lego." The premiere of season five of Peaky Blinders took place at Birmingham Town Hall on Thursday night(18), ahead of the show's return to BBC One later in the year. Stars including Helen McCrory, Sophie Rundle, Packy Lee, Natasha O'Keeffe and Finn Cole took to the red carpet, before an exclusive screening of episode one and a question and answer session with fans. Summer Toolkit for Separated Parents
Summer 2019 is upon us. As family solicitors, it is during this period that we tend to see a spike in child arrangement disputes, reflective of our clients’ desire to take their children away on holiday or to spend additional time outside of their ‘usual’ arrangements. This can cause conflict between separated parents, particularly where communications are strained. With the above in mind, we have prepared the following guidance ahead of the summer period, aimed at separated parents in a bid to reduce tension and provide a useful aide memoir as to how best to achieve constructive and positive communications, in order to facilitate solutions that all parties are happy with. Our tips are as follows: a) Champion the principle that it is in the best interests of the children to have a meaningful and secure relationship with each parent (subject to there being no safeguarding concerns e.g. issues relating to violence, abuse etc.). b) Acknowledge that the children are to be treated as important individuals with unique feelings, ideas and desires and not as a source of arguments between parents. c) Never denigrate the other parent in the presence or hearing of the children. d) Never seek to undermine the other parent’s position as the child’s parent. e) Permit the children to express their love and affection for the absent parent. This will enable the children to feel that they have the emotional permission to love both parents, and avoid them fearing the other parent's disapproval which will, in turn, permit the children to relax and enjoy their time with the other parent; f) Ensure that the children are not placed in a position to manipulate one parent against the other. g) Endeavour to communicate reasonably and properly with the other parent in respect of arrangements relating to their children and show proper respect to one another. h) Never attempt to discuss the arrangements via the children. These are adult issues and the children should be protected from them. i) Remember that children require routine, stability and consistency. It is important that they feel secure in the arrangements made. j) Understand that to expose the children to adult conflict may contribute to the risk of the children suffering long term emotional and psychological damage. Should you require any guidance or support from a legal perspective ahead or during the summer period, then Irwin Mitchell has a wealth of experienced family law practitioners who will be able to assist.

t is full steam ahead for the construction of three new Birmingham rail stations following a £15 million funding boost from the Department for Transport. The funding is an important step in getting passenger services resumed on the Camp Hill Line calling at Moseley, Kings Heath and Hazelwell Stations. Transport for the West Midlands (TfWM) and the West Midlands Rail Executive (WMRE), working with rail industry partners including Network Rail and West Midlands Trains, are leading the development of the new stations. The Camp Hill line stations closed during 1941 and since then, the line has been used only by freight and non-stop through-services. These new stations will provide regular train services into Birmingham New Street, with quick journey times. The stations represent a significant investment in the local area and will offer better transport choice into central Birmingham, as well as easing congestion along the A435 Alcester Road and surrounding routes. The funding comes as planning applications are set to be submitted for the Kings Heath and Hazelwell Stations after a very positive public consultation and design period. The
From left: Malcolm Holmes, West Midlands Rail Executive, Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street , Cllr Waseem Zaffar, Birmingham City Council and Brenda Lawrence, West Midlands Railway application for Moseley will follow later in the year after further design work. It is hoped that construction work would start in 2020, with a view to getting the three stations open in time for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street said: “Thanks to this Government funding we can now get on with planning and building the Camp Hill Line stations

Birmingham City Council cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “This is great news for the people of south Birmingham who have long campaigned to get these stations reopened. “This, along with the huge investment in trams, buses and cycling is going to transform the way we travel as we move to more sustainable forms of transport.”
“IT IS WHAT IT IS” City of Wolverhampton Council reopened Tettenhall Pool for families to enjoy over the summer. Since 1989, the city council has maintained Tettenhall Pool which has seen many visitors over the years and proven to be extremely popular during the six weeks’ holidays. As the sunshine returned this morning, young families visited the pool to enjoy a splash around for the first time this summer. Earlier this year, the pool temporarily closed for required repair works which will extend the life of the pool for the next 30 years. Councillor Jasbir Jaspal, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing at City of
Wolverhampton Council said: “I’m so pleased the pool has reopened on time for children to enjoy and keep active over the summer holidays. “It’s always fantastic to see families laughing and playing together at Tettenhall Pool and today has been no exception. “Now the pool has reopened, I’m sure this free attraction will be enjoyed by many residents and visitors to Tettenhall over the upcoming weeks.” This year, the city council has also launched ‘Summer Squad’ an events programme for children and young people to enjoy over the summer. Eid Ul Adha 14
JULY 2019
FEATURE
WWW.THEASIANTODAY.COM
EID UL ADHA is celebrated by Muslims around the globe to commemorate Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmel to God.
The timings of many Muslim celebrations are dependent on the sighting of the Moon’s crescent, following the New Moon. Unlike Eid al Fitr, Eid ul Adha comes on the 10th day of the month - so the date is dependent on the Moon sighting that determines the start of said month. This year, the Moon is expected to be sighted on August 1. Therefore, both the International Astronomical Centre (IAC) in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and the Umm al-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia has
earmarked Eid al-Adha for Sunday, August 11. This year Eid is celebrated from 11th August to the 14th August. Traditionally lasting for four days, the first day of Eid ul- Adha marks the end of the yearly Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah. Eid al-Adha usually lasts for four days but it can range from three to as many as 16 days in different countries. Eid ul Adha - also known as Eid al Adha, Qurbani Eid, Kurbani Bayrami or Bakra Eid - is the next landmark religious holiday for Muslims. Considered the holier of the two Eid celebrations; Eid al Fitr has already taken place this year to celebrate the end of Ramadan, while Eid al Adha will be marked with sacrifices. This is because this celebration honours Ibrahim, who was about to sacrifice his son Ishmael to show his devotion to Allah. As the sacrifice was about to take place, Allah gave Ibrahim a lamb to slaughter instead - recognising the strength of Ibrahim’s devotion. How Eid ul Adha is celebrated? In the UK, there are almost 2.8 million Muslims - making up almost five percent of the population. The day will begin with performing ghouls - a full body ritual. Muslims will then dress in their finest clothes for a
prayer service, where they will later embrace their friends, family and neighbours with the blessing “Eid Mubarak” or “have a bless Eid”. The main ritual of the celebration is sacrificial although British law dictates the animal must be killed in an official slaughterhouse.
Food consists mainly of savoury goods - unlike Eid al Fitr, which is known as the “sweet Eid”. Depending on where you live, the main ingredient for the celebration is usually the meat from the slaughtered animal - such as a lamb or a goat.
Raksha Bandhan ADVERT
Rakhi Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival that celebrates the relationship between brothers and sisters, and families, on the full moon of the Hindu month of Shravana (Sharavan Poornima), or around July and August. This day is also called Brother and Sister Day. Together, the festival symbolizes the eternal love of brother-sister relationship which does not mean just the blood relationships only. It is also celebrated
among cousins, sister and sister-in-law, fraternal aunt and nephew and other such relations. The word Raksha means protection, whilst Bandhan is the verb to tie. Traditionally, during the festival sisters tie a rakhi, a bracelet made of interwoven red and gold threads, around their brothers' wrists to celebrate their relationship. This year Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on Thursday 15th August 2019 and in India is an optional holiday

WE HAVE A NEW PRIME MINISTER
The third new face since 2016 when David Cameron resigned, Theresa May appointed only to be replaced by Boris Johnson. The deadline for Brexit is 31st October. It would be a brave soul to bet against a No Deal exit. Three and a half years to achieve a ‘nothing option’ we could have implemented hours after the Referendum to leave the EU in June 2016. Look around at the society being shaped under the Brexit rhetoric cloud; City streets paved with the bodies of the homeless who’s throats strain with pleas for spare change. Traffic lights allow us to look into the eyes of society’s downcast as they peddle for coins in discarded coffee cups. Food banks are praised by the Rees-Moggs of the world who celebrate their existence as proof of human compassion. Why are working people unable to feed their families in the fifth richest country in the world? Is it because wealth is concentrated in so few hands? Political leaders waste valuable time responding to social media criticism from people with mindsets they will never influence. A line graph illustrating the value of Sterling resembles a plane coming into land. A British Airways flight fills with smoke on landing, forcing evacuation chutes to deploy. Passengers risk the lives of others by grabbing their luggage first and their Twitter images second. Empty cycle lanes run parallel to congested roads. Cyclists breathe in toxins emitted by cars who face clean air zone charges, the delay of which allows drivers to breathe a sigh of relief. And through all of this, the new Prime Minister helicopters around the country promising billions for more police officers, HS3 and Welsh lamb. The Queen asked Boris Johnson on his trip to the Palace, why anyone would even want the job..! JAS SANSI TWITTER: @jassansi FACEBOOK: fb.com/jassansi
Transplant Games reaches new heights in Newport The Welsh city will carry a lasting legacy after being named the second ever ‘Donor City’ as nearly 900 transplant recipients take part. Last week (July 25-28th 2019), the city of Newport saw one of the greatest Westfield Health British Transplant Games to-date with nearly 900 transplant recipients competing over the four-day event to take home a combined haul of over 2,200 bronze, silver and gold medals. The Games consisted of heart, lung, kidney, liver and other transplant recipients – some as young as three – taking part in 21 different events and cheered on by nearly 1,500 supporters. The focus of the British Transplant Games is firmly on taking part, having fun and celebrating the gift of life, while the line-up of sports included athletics, swimming, football, table tennis cycling and badminton. After an enthralling day of track and field on Sunday (July 28th), the Games signed off for another year with two celebration events and a host of awards.
Birmingham Children’s Hospital won the Best Children’s Team Award for the 23rd consecutive year while Royal Papworth Hospital took home the title of Best Heart and Lung Team for the fourth year in a row. Sara Clarke, Team Manager for Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Lisa Beaumont, Team Manager of the Leeds Children’s Hospital also received an Outstanding Achievement Award for their relentless dedication to the cause. The legacy of the Games will be felt in Newport for years to come after the Welsh city was awarded the title of ‘Donor City’. The Donor City Award was presented by Dr. James Neuberger, a trustee of Transplant Sport – the charity behind the Games – and recognises the city’s commitment to encourage those in the region to have the chat about organ donation with their loved ones and opt-in to the NHS Organ Donor Register. Newport becomes only the second ever ‘Donor City’ after Birmingham was given the honour last year following the 2018 British Transplant Games, which were hosted
in the West Midlands. The award of the title ‘Donor City’ has seen the Leader of Newport City Council Debbie Wilcox passionately pledge to improve organ donation rates moving forward. A pinnacle event for the host charity Transplant Sport, the Games raise awareness of the importance of organ donation. Wales was the first country to introduce a soft opt-out system of the Organ Donor Register in the United Kingdom. Under the opt-out system, consent for organ donation is presumed unless a person had registered against it in advance. However, the final decision on organ donation is still made by loved ones upon death. Dr. James Neuberger said: “Staging the Transplant Games already demonstrates a substantial commitment to the cause of organ donation but the way Newport and the country of Wales embraced this celebratory event was quite remarkable. There was a clear level of devotion to the cause that we hadn’t ever seen before. “Transplant Sport were absolutely delighted to
award Newport with the title of ‘Donor City’ and know the city will follow in Birmingham’s steps to make a real impact on organ donation rates within the region.” For many of these athletes their focus now switches to the World Transplant Games in NewcastleGateshead (August 17-24, 2019). The British Transplant Games then returns to the West Midlands in Coventry for 2020. The event was supported by Westfield Health, Welsh Government, Newport City Council, Newport Live the local health boards across Wales, NHS Blood and Transplant, Kidney Care UK, Anthony Nolan Register, Donor Family Network, Global Kidney Foundation and Believe Organ Donor Support. Further sponsors included Friars Walk, Icon Creative Design, Rodney Parade, Celtic Manor, Newport NOW BID, Kidney Research UK, Believe, Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, Pulmonary Hypertension Association, South Wales Argus and Total Events Production.

Pakistan Independence Day WEDNESDAY 14th August 2019 Pakistan Independence Day, which is annually held on August 14th, celebrated the country’s independence from the British rule on that date in 1947. This day is an occasion to promote patriotism and national unity. Independence Day is a public holiday. It is a day off the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed. The Indo-Pak subcontinent remained a British colony from 18491947. The subcontient’s inhabitants did not approve of the British rule in united India. An uprising that occurred in 1857 eventually formed the shape of a freedom movement. This exemplifies the efforts of the people of British India in gaining their independence. Muslims ruled the subcontinent before the British incursion and suffered due to the 1857 uprising against the British East India Company. Leaders such as Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and Syed Ameer Ali worked diligently for the
Muslim people’s political advancement. The Indian National Congress was formed in 1885, which later on became British India’s largest political party. Major Muslim political leaders, including Muhammad Ali Jinnah, were members of the Indian National Congress and worked towards HinduMuslim unity and India’s Independence. The all India Muslim League was founded on 30th December 1906. There was growing demands for an independent Muslim state in India. In 1930 Muhammad Iqbal presented the idea of a separate Muslim state that would geographically consist of the Muslim majority areas in the subcontinent. The word Pakistan is a conjunction of two words Pak meaning Pure and Stan meaning Land, a name coined by Choudhary Rahmat Ali. After Worlds War 2 it was expected that the British colonies would soon disintegrate. The Pakistan movement, spearheaded by
Muhammad Ali Jinnah, resulted in creating a Muslim state. Pakistan gained independence in creating British rule on August 14th, 1947. Pakistan had two parts commonly referred to as East and West Pakistan. In 1971 east Pakistan parted from West Pakistan and became Bangladesh. How the Independence Day is celebrated? People all over Pakistan celebrate Independence Day with Patriotic flare. Many people attend Independence Day Parades and dress up in green and white. People visit national monuments and places of national significance to celebrate Independence Day. This is also a time to meet relatives, exchange gifts and visit recreational spots. Pakistan’s nation flag is hoisted on public, private buildings, residences and monuments at dawn. The Prime Minister and presidents address and congratulate the nation and talk about the day.
India Independence Day THURSDAY 15th August 2019 Indian Independence Day is a hugely significant national holiday which marks the seminal moment the nation became independent from the United Kingdom. This was officially declared on 15 August 1947, making this India’s 73rd Independence Day. On the 15th August not only did India become independent on this day, but the country was divided into India and Pakistan. Partition saw the displacement of millions and violent protests, the effects of which remain for both nations until this day. How did India become Independent? Although unrest at colonial rule existed long before, the Indian independence movement gained momentum after
the First World War. Gandhi led the revolt against oppressive British rule and organised passive resistance campaigns. Although minor concessions were made by the British government, they were not enough. Discontent continued to grow India, with nationalist leaders from across the country rejecting Britain’s empty promises. In 1942, during the Second World War. The Quit India Movement demanding an end to British rule was launched by the Indian Congress. This led to colonial authorities arresting and jailing hundreds of nationalists, including Gandhi. Despite hundreds of nationalists getting sentenced, demonstrations from the parties continued and grew after the war. Lord Louis Mountbatten, who
was Viceroy in the country, had been given until 1948 to divide the nation, but this date was hastily moved forward. His Plan involved division along religious linesalthough it is up for debate how successful this was. In 1947 the Indian National Congress reluctantly accepted the creation of Pakistan and, on August 15, 1947, the Indian Independence Bill took effect. The Partition of India After signing the Independence Bill, it was agreed colonial India would be divided into two separate states- on Pakistan and the other India. The two countries celebrate on different days because Lord Mountbatten had to attend the Pakistan Celebration on 14th August and then travel to Delhi for
India’s first independent day on 15th August. The partition saw over 14 million people displace and led to the death of up to two million, creating one of the biggest refugee crises in history. Riots and fighting were rife, particularly in the western region of Punjab as it was cut in to by the boarder. The day is celebrated by pageants parades and flag hoisting ceremonies can be expected across the country. Many official buildings will be adorned with lights and particularly in Delhi- kite flying is common. Residents will wear the nation’s coloursgreen, orange and white- and even decorate their houses. The Prime Minister gives an address to the nation and raises the Indian Flag, following a military march that takes place in Red Fort Delhi.

Blinded By The Light Review Blinded by the Light Dir: Gurinder Chadha Screenplay: Sarfraz Manzoor Stars: Viveik Kalra, Aaron Phagura, Kulvinder Ghir and Hayley Atwell What do you get when you cross race and religion with rock ‘n’ roll? A memoir published by British Journalist, Sarfraz Manzoor about just that. And ‘Blinded by the Light’ is a film adapted by just that, with multilayered moral messages. ‘Greetings from Bury Park’ was personally penned by Manzoor and published in 2007. 12 years later, his turbulent teen years are being reincarnated for the silver screen by Bend it Like Beckham Director, Gurinder Chadha. Set in the late 80’s under Thatcherite rule, the film follows Javed (Viveik Kalra) through his plight during his formative years as a British Pakistani living in a lackluster Luton. In fulfilling the Chadha formula, the film deftly handles politics and prejudice, but it isn’t without its comedy. Not least The Boss who made it all possible in the first place, Bruce Springsteen, which teeters on Musical territory. Despite some echoes of Bend it Like Beckham, this one zeroes in on the soul of
a jaded Javed, jolted alive by the songs of Springsteen that would go on to shape his life the better and maybe those around him. Chadha liberally fuses the rock music to reflect an even rockier Britain, plotted purposefully to unlock the next chapter of the youth’s Springsteen inspired life story. Ironically the film is akin to most of the feel-good films that were actually made in the 80s. Think ‘Stand by Me’, ‘The Breakfast Club’ or ‘Dead Poet’s Society’, and Blinded by the Light is unapologetically a coming-ofage film of similar ilk, except laced with racial prejudices, domestic discord and government politics that are still prevalent today. In a recent declaration published in The Guardian, Manzoor wrote: “I had hoped that the tales of my teenage years would, with each year, read more and more like a dispatch from a long gone era. Younger readers would greet them with horrified fascination and a renewed gratitude for how much things had changed. It turns out that things have not changed as much as I had hoped. The old fragility has returned”. Be that as it may, the film finds its relief through some romanticised revelations – most, no, all of which are
centred on Bruce. This starts at college, after a stroke of serendipity with soon-tobe-friend, Roops (Aaron Phagura) who introduces Javed to ‘The Boss’. The rest is well, not history, but the present(?) We know from the outset Javed wants to be more than the son his dad expects him to be, so the threat of being ostracised is always looming. But combine that with the struggles of social integration and the National Fron at its peak, Javed’s only salvation is the songs of Springsteen. And he channels his teenage angst into writing poems and sometimes lyrics, conveniently for his best friend Matt (Dean-Charles Chapman), who’s in a band. But Javed doesn’t quite know what he wants out of life yet and it isn’t until his English teacher, Ms Clay (Hayley Atwell) cloyingly encourages him to pursue a career in writing because he is evidently adept but woefully withdrawn. It’s cliché but his disapproving father continues to douse Javed’s ignited new passion, because the sole priority is staving off financial abyss after being laid-off from his factory job. Anyone with a logical mind would say that’s understandable. Not that Javed’s illogical; he’s
just enamoured by ‘the possibilities’. Before tackling The Great Storm of 1987 to take out some rubbish (his literatures) he returns to his bedroom to pop his ‘Bruce cherry’, Roop’s words, not mine. Then literal lightning strikes and he is henceforth blinded by the light. The lyrics of ‘Dancing in the Dark’ appear on screen in a whirlwind of words and they flow through Javed’s head – almost intoxicated by the lyrics. Inebriated
to the point of delusional immortality. At this point, nothing can come in Javed’s way. He is liberated, inspired and ready to rebel. What follows is a back-and-forth between what Javed insists he wants, what Ms Clay decides he wants, and what his dad doesn’t want. But Malik claims he’s not like other dads telling their sons to be Doctors; instead to be a Lawyer, Accountant or Estate Agent. With his all-encompassing
and compulsory assembly speech, we know by now that if Javed was blinded by the light before, he’s got his eyes wide open now. Because like the young lad says: “success without parents doesn’t really mean success”. Greetings from Bury Park by Sarfraz Manzoor is published by Bloomsbury. Blinded by the Light is released in cinemas on 9 August Read the Full Review Online - www.theasiantoday.com

An Express Grill
In Oldbury
On the hunt for a decent Curry or Mixed Grill, then one to definitely check out is the Railway Inn near Oldbury Town Centre. A pub that has been around for a while serves up great Tandoori Chicken, succulent Kebabs and mouth watering Fish Pakoras. Located right opposite Sandwell and Dudley Station with express trains running in and out of Birmingham New Street Station and also with trains running into Wolverhampton City Centre from the other platform, this is an ideal stop to fuel up before a night out in the City. It is also located not far from Oldbury Bus Station and a short distance from West Bromwich, so an ideal location to meet friends for a catch up over a pint and a curry. A small traditional pub that has been transformed into more of a Desi Bar and Grill with a pool table and saloon style seating, serving traditional ales and craft beers also a selection of spirits. But it is the menu that gives it the edge you won’t just find a pack of dry roast nuts here but a variety of grills and curries and reasonably priced. They provide sauces by the bottle, so you can have as much mint chutney as you like with your meal. Would definitely recommend the mixed grill with some green chillies on the side if you’re feeling adventurous. But an all round decent Desi Bar and Grill. Bringing back Community in Banking A Book Review by Anil Singh Gill In the book ‘FANS! Not Customers’ a book by Vernon W.Hill II it depicts how Metro Bank brings the sense of community through its staff and colleagues. I feel the main point of the book is how it creates the most powerful part of its marketing by using an old-fashioned technique of recommendation and word of mouth. There are a few case studies in the book and they describe how Metro Bank staff go that extra mile to deliver customer satisfaction. This is by allowing their customers or ‘Fans’ to continue with their busy agendas and help with their banking needs and requirements. There have been a few cases where customers have left personal items and belongings in the
that’s why for Metro Bank they create more ‘Fans’ by providing those that bank with them an overall better service. Metro Bank is the first new High Street bank in over 100 years. It is the revolution in British banking and is celebrated for its exceptional customer experience and its trusted products. Metro Bank was founded on the idea that you should be able to bank when it suits you. It first opened its doors in the summer of 2010 the first High Street Bank
Giving Back How can a business ‘Give Back’ to it’s working environment and increase productivity? Recently I was asked to give my view on a dilemma that is becoming common in the work place of the business world within Corporate Social Responsibility. How can a company be an investor in its people or its environment and see a tangible return on an investment? Some companies are investing directly into their workforce by reducing the carbon footprint of their daily travel, also by creating on site nursery facilities where businesses are helping working mums to provide flexible working hours spent in the office or at home. Giving back to the workforce with this genuine approach tends to increase staff loyalty and pride, thus boosting company productivity and efficiency. An excellent example of investing ‘man hours and capital’ came to my attention during a visit to the heart of India’s booming economic and political capital, Delhi. My cousin works for American Express India: her commitment, loyalty and productivity were second to none, and that is because Amex had made internal changes to allow more hours safely which is just one example which the corporate giant Amex has made in identifying tangible benefits to invest within their staff. Other Companies take a practical but dispassionate approach by possibly investing in high profile charities that may not directly help the workforce which tends to create Media ‘brownie points’, resulting in a positive national profile. Sales may increase in store with contracts being won, but the workplace morale may not get the same boost as investing in staff. The third type of organisation creates a public affiliation with a charity that is close to the hearts of both staff and directors. branch and Metro Bank staff personally returning their belongings to them making their ‘Fans’ that bank with them feel that extra personal touch. This act then goes the extra mile, by Metro Banks customers recommending the bank to their friends and family. Knowing that this Bank cares about its customers and wants to build more than just the average customer relationship. This allows for Metro Bank to receive free advertising and marketing, just through word of mouth and recommendations, alongside their other colourful marketing campaigns. For some banking can be a tricky task with banks only open on weekdays and some High Street banks that are open late and close early,
to open in the UK in over a hundred years. With Metro Bank open seven days a week that also includes Bank Holidays and also open 8:00am – 8:00pm that’s earlier and later than any other High Street bank. Metro Bank is expanding from London and the South East and opening more Branches in the Midlands with their new branch to open in Birmingham City Centre with their Grand Opening on Friday 9th August 2019 – Bringing the Banking Revolution to Birmingham.
The Decline in Traditional TV The total number of UK streaming subscriptions have risen by a quarter in 2018 - from 15.6m to 19.1m with many homes signing up to more than one service. The report found that two in five of UK adults are subscribing to TV streaming services such as Netflix. For the first time, young people now spend more than an hour on YouTube each day, the Ofcom report also showed, and adults watch around half an hour of YouTube a day. Traditional TV is in decline despite the broadcasters showing over 100 times more original, UK-made shows than the streaming giants.

All of the homes will be built for affordable rent and construction is set to start on the scheme later this month after the developers struck a deal with housing
provider Sanctuary. Tani Dulay, chief executive of Woodbourne Group, said: “The deal is a testament to our ability to exploit value in areas that others would shy away from.” Demolition work has already taken place on the part-derelict industrial estate to make way for the new homes.
Major redevelopment of New Park Village estate City of Wolverhampton Council is considering major redevelopment plans for council housing in New Park Village. The proposals will see 184 outdated, deck-access maisonettes at Ellerton Walk demolished and replaced with new modern homes for rent and sale. It follows consultation with the residents in January that saw almost 75 per cent of the 161 returned surveys in favour of demolition redevelopment, rather than refurbishment or doing nothing. The multi-million-pound programme will be funded from the council’s Housing Revenue Account (HRA) capital budget approved by Cabinet in January. If approved at the council’s Cabinet Resources Panel tonight (Tuesday), there will be ongoing con-sultation with residents, as the detailed proposals and designs are worked up over the coming 18 months. City of Wolverhampton Council Leader, Councillor Ian Brookfield, said: “The 100-year anniversary of council housing in Britain this year gives us cause to celebrate our work
in the City of Wolverhampton. “We are continuing to invest heavily in new and replacement council housing and this scheme will make a major difference to residents in New Park Village. “It forms part of our housing plans to deliver better homes for all across the city.” The 1960s maisonettes sit within eight linked deck-access blocks, each with integral garages at groundfloor level. Subject to planning approval delivery of the demolition and redevelopment scheme will start from winter 2020 and will be phased over several years to minimise the number of moves residents have to make. Environmental improvements will also be designed alongside the new homes, addressing car park-ing and road layout with the redevelopment of the estate.

ven if you struggle with the concept of the big fast, heavy SUV, you cant argue with the execution here. RollsRoyece has never been one for hiding its extravagant talents and abilities when it comes to car designs. “Our answer to history, to the visionaries, adventurers, explorers and those who believe in the supremacy of liberty is the Rolls-Royce Cullinan,” CEO Torsten Müller Ötvös declaims. “It dramatically evolves the parameters of super-luxury travel. It is effortless, everywhere.” Its also he company’s belated entrance and
controversial response to the boom in SUVs. The Cullinan is either the pinnacle of the automotive achievement with the price of the vehicle reaching £300k. Its structure reworks the so-called ‘Architecuture of Luxury; that lies beneath the
fabulous Phantom. We’re talking a modular aluminium spaceframe, with castings in each corner and extrusions in between reconfigured here into a form that sits higher and shorter than in its limousine brother with a split tail-gate added for the necessary versatility. The new chassis is 30 per cent stiffer than the previous one, an improvement that
helps the transition to supersized 4x4. Compared to the Phantom’s preternatural calmness, the Cullinan adds all the soft and hardware needed to send it down the road and up a mountain
with the sort of invincibility that saw early Rolls patron T.E Lawrence turn his car into an unexpectedly robust war machine. Without wishing to sounding too polite, its fair to say the Cullinan’s design has excited a variety of opinion. Some have compared it to a London taxi or the Canyonero in The Simpsons; others have
been less kind. Maybe a shallower glass area would have helped the proportions, but the Cullinan is purposely meant to be a mobile viewing platform, and rejects the Phantom’s chunky privacy C-pillar in the process. It’s 5.3m long, 2.1m wide, and 1.8m tall, and weighs in at 2660kg unladen. Like the Phantom, its surfaces are fantastically resolved, and it doesn’t want for drama. Its laser headlights – complete with frosted elements – and vertical and horizontal lines result in a face that Rolls likens to a warrior.

Mayor to host intergenerational Cricket Cup at Edgbaston Andy Street has announced that he is to host an intergenerational Cricket Cup at Edgbaston later this year in the wake of England’s thrilling World Cup triumph. The Mayor of the West Midlands, who is himself a big cricket fan, is keen to build on England’s recent success and the start of the Ashes series by hosting this new tournament, which aims to unite the different communities of the region. The Mayor’s Cricket Cup, which will take place on Sunday September 8, is aimed at young people aged 13-16 and adults over the age of 60, with grandparents competing against grandchildren. The Mayor, who is the former CEO of John Lewis, said: “As well as being one of the greatest sporting spectacles many of us are likely to see in our lifetime, England’s triumphant World Cup campaign taught us all one crucial lesson – that sport has the power to unite. “From young to old, amateur to skilled, the nation was gripped by England’s win, and we must take advantage of that – especially with the Ashes starting this week. “That is why I have launched the Mayor’s Cricket Cup, which will help to bring both the older and younger
generations together in what is sure to be a day to remember.” It is hoped the cup, which could become an annual fixture, will also help to show off the West Midlands’ rich cultural diversity, something that is on show with the England cricket team. Birmingham-born allrounder Moeen Ali said: “If you can come together with a common purpose – in our case winning the World Cup – and you show courage, unity and respect (our team mantra) you can achieve anything.” The tournament is being supported by Warwickshire
County Cricket Club, with the club providing professional coaches and umpires on the day. Ravinder Masih, the Head of Community Engagement and Government Relations at Warwickshire Country Cricket Club, said: “This has already been a fantastic summer of cricket at Edgbaston with the stadium hosting five incredible Cricket World Cup games and welcoming stars and spectators from across the globe. “The Edgbaston Foundation is delighted to work with the Mayor on The Mayor’s Cricket
Cup, an intergenerational community initiative that encourages young and old to get active and follow in the footsteps of their heroes by playing on the outfield at Edgbaston.” Registration for places is now open, and 100 places in total will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The Ashes have begun with the first Test at Edgbaston on Thursday 1 August and England are hoping to regain their win. The Ashes is a Test cricket series played between England and Australia. The Ashes are regarded as being held by the team that most recently won the Test series. They have opted against handing a debut to pace bowler Jofra Archer, instead preferring Chris Woakes on his home ground. An Ashes series is traditionally of five Tests,
hosted in turn by England and Australia at least once every two years. There have been 70 Ashes series: Australia have won 33, England 32 and five series have been drawn One name that is on every cricket fan lips is Jofra Archer, who has been called up for his first ever Test match.
