Dear Readers, Dear Basel! At the start of the new season, let’s first take a look back. What have we learned: a life without physical closeness, a life without contact is hard. Theatre, our purpose in life, our passion hung and still hangs by a thin thread. If there is one thing for sure now though: a contactless theatre experience is not theatre at all. We have missed you, dear guests, and your warm company incredibly! We would like to thank the public authorities and also you for your resilience and amazing support throughout the crisis. When making decisions, we have tried to be as sustainable as possible. Ensuring the survival and the future of Theater Basel and at the same time not abandoning the numerous freelance artists who work here – was and is our heartfelt mission and purpose. Extra Weeks starting in August Fourteen performances were not seen enough during the last season. We have therefore decided to perform them again for you. Further, it is another reason why we are kicking off the season much earlier than usual with a festival in August: nine fantastic productions on the Grosse Bühne and at the Schauspielhaus, 46 performances in just six weeks. The ‹Extra Weeks› are set to be even more enticing with some special summer prices, an open-air bar and supporting programme in the Foyer Public. At the same time, you will be able to experience the ‹Forever Spielclub Festival› of Junges Haus on the Kleine Bühne and at Galerie 7. 3
Cultural neighbourhood on the Theaterplatz We will be celebrating the most urban space in Basel on 11 September: the Theaterplatz. Historisches Museum Basel, kult.kino, Kunsthalle Basel, Literaturhaus Basel, Offene Kirche Elisabethen, S AM Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Stadtcasino Basel, Stadtkino Basel, Theater Basel and the bird’s eye jazz club are celebrating their cultural neighbourhood with a joint party. The Foyer Public has continued to develop despite Covid-19. And it will be back open for everyone to enjoy after the summer break: Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm as a public space with a roof, Wi-Fi and meeting places. A generation-spanning theatre This season, more than ever before, Theater Basel will be a «generation-spanning theatre»: We begin and end the season with two youth festivals. We have an exceptional number of works in our programme for young people, but also for families with children above the age of six. The extra booklets ‹Für Kinder› and ‹Für Jugendliche› contain all the information you need. And there will once again be a special booklet ‹Für Schulen›. Basel residents of all ages and backgrounds will also be able to take the stage: nine productions allow you to actually participate. Anniversaries and new beginnings There are a number of anniversaries coming up: the Theatergenossenschaft is turning 100 and the Schauspielhaus is celebrating its 20th birthday in January 2022. And our opera studio OperAvenir was launched 15 years ago. We are planning to celebrate this with a very special production of ‹The Barber of Seville›: a puppet theatre production where the puppets will be played by the young singers: We have established a circle of patrons, and you can become a member. Further, we have entered into cooperation with a catering partner: the Basel-based Krafft-Gruppe. As you can see, we are bursting with ideas and are full of passion. And we all hope for the best. A neighbourhood is celebrating culture The Theaterplatz with its steps, levels and the world’s most famous carnival fountain will be transformed into the «Theaterplatz neighbourhood» together with the various local cultural institutions: a lively and polyphonic cultural venue right in the heart of Basel. And we want to celebrate the opening of this event with you! A birthday weekend at Steinentorstrasse The new Schauspielhaus officially opened with a ‹Hamlet› production on 17 January 2002. More than 150 premieres and 20 years later, artists, staff and audiences have long felt at home in the building designed by the Basel architect firm Schwarz Gutmann Pfister. More than reason enough to mark the anniversary by looking back and thanking the «first ladies» whose anonymous donation made construction possible in the first place. But also the present and the future of theatre and performance arts will be duly celebrated on the birthday weekend with a diverse programme!

To mark the opera studio anniversary, we are letting the puppets take the lime light For over 15 years, the OperAvenir opera studio has been an established institution boosting the careers of young singers. The special thing about this additional training: in-house opera productions and projects in which the stars of tomorrow can present themselves to a real audience. We’re celebrating the anniversary with an exceptional new production of Rossini’s fast-paced, classic opera buffa ‹The Barber of Seville›. In the production by Austrian director and puppeteer Nikolaus Habjan, the young ensemble shares the stage with life-size open-mouth puppets.

Chamber ballet based on works by William Shakespeare Duels, betrayals, intimate seductions, monologues in front of the mirror, love scenes and deaths: this is what Shakespeare’s plays about the five kings of England from Richard II to Richard III are all about. Richard Wherlock also tells of the crimes and strategies used to hold on to power. The music for this evening of dance is by the Basel company member Max Zachrisson.

Classic Dürrenmatt drama under selfdirection – the Basel Company stages its own work Three mentally ill patients in an asylum claim to be the scientists Möbius, Einstein and Newton. One of them really has discovered the theory of everything. He hides it to prevent humanity destroying itself: One person decides for all. But: «What concerns everyone is something only all of us can solve,» wrote Dürrenmatt. True to this quote, the Basel Company does without a director and instead bases its work on the 1962 premiere. A production to mark Dürrenmatt’s 100th birthday, which questions our belief in individual genius with playful vigour.

A symphony-superscription with intermediate tones A symphony orchestra rehearses Haydn’s ‹The Seasons›. The concert is due to start in a matter of hours, but the conductor is far from happy. Spring is too cold, summer too long, the flutes would rather have played Vivaldi and the wrong decorations have been delivered. This leads to some quarrels, a bit of improvising is called for. Musical overlays and all kinds of disruptive noises result in a cheerful to desperate reinvention of the current world and weather situation. Swiss director Thom Luz returns to Theater Basel. Together with musicians from Kammerorchester Basel and an ensemble of dancers and actors, he develops a spatial composition about the changing reality in times filled with huge swathes of lightning from all directions.

Magic opera on a bare stage The most wondrous of all operas in a celebrated production by the theatre magician Simon McBurney. He brings to life the magic of theatre with deceptively simple means. The emanating lightness and emotional depth of this production have been celebrated and acclaimed throughout half of Europe. A dialogue between the generations The daughter becomes aware of what embodies her attitude to life when her father dies. She listens to his favourite songs and thinks about his origins. Her own life seems like an interwoven web of experiences, memories and attributions. Only through storytelling and writing are her eyes opened to her own destiny. This autofictional dialogue was written by the French author Claudine Galéa. At Theater Basel, Emilie Charriot stages the Germanlanguage premiere. The French director is known for her precise and reduced works that boast great emotional depth. She has been invited to stage her production ‹Vocation› as a guest performance during Abo Français in the Schauspielhaus on 19 October.

A classic work about justice, performed by a young and diverse ensemble In a small seaside town, the legendary Red Zora and her gang are on the prowl. Without any parents, without any money and completely on their own, the gang members experience adventures and real struggles for survival. But hunger is not their only enemy. The town’s bigwigs, the police and the nasty high school students are also out to make their lives difficult. When the gang’s only adult ally, an old fisherman called Gorian, is innocently caught up in some trouble, they become underground fighters for justice: The fact that nothing changes by itself and that solidarity needs to be clearly communicated is theatrically visualised by young people with and without a refugee background.

Accusations and unforgivable mistakes are relived – remembering the past has fatal consequences. The past comes back to life and there is no redeemer to defeat it. Antú Romero Nunes tells the traditional dark Sorbian folk tale as a retrospective. In doing so, he uses all the arts available at Theater Basel: theatre, dance, the Basel Sinfonietta, an opera singer and a foley artist bring the Black Mill and its magic to life.

Old ballet d’action with a new twist Lise falls in love with a woman, Collette, instead of the young farmer Colas. And Alain, who has actually been chosen by Lise’s mother as her son-in-law, develops a somewhat peculiar relationship to a scarecrow. The famous chicken dance is performed by rabbits, and hay bales wrapped in plastic act as the stage set. ‹La fille mal gardée› is one of the oldest surviving ballets. The Belgian choreographer Jeroen Verbruggen transforms idyllic country life with down-to-earth characters into a queer story ballet with gender confusion and pleasurable ambiguity.

A participatory project based on the opera by Claudio Monteverdi Monteverdi’s opera is about the returning home of Odysseus. But instead of the hero, men from Basel with a migration background will occupy the stage. Together with the singers and the musicians of La Cetra, they tell of Odysseus’ fate, a tale of belonging and alienation. The past and the present are also combined in the music: Monteverdi’s baroque world of sound meets newly composed electronic soundscapes. The director Krystian Lada has already picked up various awards for his innovative productions. Mezzosoprano Katarina Bradić returns to Theater Basel in the role of Penelope.

As punishment or consolation, humans turn into animals, plants, stones or constellations. He’s not trapped in a dull job and just takes what he wants. But when he steals a coffee grinder from Kasperl’s grandmother, he incurs the wrath of Kasperl and Seppel. The two friends decide to trap the villain and hand him over to the police. Restless social satire about a lost body part When Platon Kuzmich Kovalyov, a collegiate assessor, wakes up one morning, something is different. He looks in the mirror to find that his nose has disappeared. It appears to have acquired a life of its own, which soon has the whole town in uproar. ‹Die Nase› is a biting satire about creating mass hysteria within a society. The music of the 22-yearold Dmitri Shostakovich is exuberant, imaginative and full of grotesque humour. After his production of Richard Strauss’ ‹Intermezzo›, director Herbert Fritsch once again devotes himself to an opera of the experimental 1920s / 1930s.

At the centre of Benedikt von Peter’s production is a group of children who re-enact the Passion. Orchestra, singers, choirs and audience come together as one large congregation. Against the backdrop of the frightening change in lifestyles brought on by rapid industrialisation, the mountains became a place of longing. Richard Wherlock addresses the topics of identity and belonging in ‹Heidi›. What ‹home› actually means can only be experienced when it is either left or lost or when it is questioned.

In the production by director and puppeteer Nikolaus Habjan, artistic open-mouth puppets step into the limelight. Interactive performance with electronic sounds When does digital content become a threat? Which traces do technologies leave in our bodies? In the music theatre and dance performance by the choreographer Sebastian Matthias, visitors encounter imaginative creatures of fear and become part of an actual sound installation. Through the loudspeakers of their mobile phones, they listen to electronic sounds that react to physical proximity and merge into a collective body of sound within the space. The JKF youth culture festival takes place every two years at numerous venues dotted around Basel city centre. It is a two-day snapshot of regional youth culture and its impressive diversity and quality. Young people are given confidence, freedom and the resources to present themselves – in many cases for the first time – to a wider audience in the various genres of music, dance, literature and spoken word, theatre, art and projects. Around 180 performances, 1,500 artists, 50,000 visitors and 170 young volunteers make it the largest free-admission festival for young culture in Switzerland.

Every two years, the Swiss Dance Days are held in a different Swiss city. The programme is selected by a professional jury: nine outstanding dance pieces from the past two years, which can be experienced as part of a jam-packed festival programme. This is not only of interest to local audiences – as a rule the festival attracts professionals, organisers and journalists from all over Switzerland and abroad. But, as we all know, things turned out a little different in 2021. The festival had to be postponed for a year. Meaning Basel will be hosting the most important platform for contemporary Swiss dance for a second time in 2022.

The Steps dance festival is the largest contemporary dance festival in Switzerland. It takes place every two years in the spring and is brought to life by Migros-Kulturprozent in cooperation with local event organisers and theatres. In their first joint creation, they take a surreal and abstract look at human behaviour patterns in exceptional situations. Spiilplätz is the festival of youth theatre clubs in Switzerland. A total of twelve clubs meet once a year for four days. They gather every year in a different city, with the festival returning to Basel in 2022. The young people show each other their latest pieces, talk about them in detail during post-performance discussions, take part in workshops and simply network. The focus is firmly on exchange, not competition. The first edition of Spiilplätz took place in 1998 as an initiative of junges theater basel and Theater Basel. By 2019, the festival had been held 18 times – not just in Basel, but also in Bern, Lucerne and Zurich.

Junges Haus is theatre for everyone who wants to get involved. Spielclubs that cover all the departments of the theatre welcome all age groups. That is until her parents can no longer afford the medication. In an attempt to raise the money, Joanna becomes entangled in criminal activity. Luckily, through courage and a sense of justice, she finds a way out. Thursday 6 pm – 9 pm, performance in May 2022 Direction: Eva Gruner Dienstagsfrühschicht (40 +) (open) GESCHICHTEN MIT GEBEN The ‹Frühschicht› ensemble combines a great deal of experience of life. Initial practical experience for young singers Since 2006, the Basel opera studio OperAvenir has been accompanying young singers taking their first steps in professional theatre productions after their studies. The members of the opera studio create a varied programme through their own projects and performances. To celebrate the studio’s anniversary, they are staging a production of Rossini’s fastpaced, classic opera ‹The Barber of Seville› (more information on page 52). Diverse advanced training The advanced training in the opera studio lasts about two years. The applicants come from all over the world. The focus is on weekly singing and speech, movement and acting lessons, supplemented by workshops and master classes. Professional experience in an opera choir Opernchorakademie (OCA) of Theater Basel offers young singers the chance to participate in the Theater Basel Choir. Members of the academy get to know the ins and outs of a professional opera choir during one whole season. They take part in regular vocal coaching sessions and are accompanied in their repertoire studies. Together with experienced colleagues, they sing in all choral passages of the operatic repertoire and in concerts, gaining invaluable experience for their subsequent careers. Stück Labor Theatre Coordination: Michael Gmaj With support from Pro Helvetia, Ernst Göhner Stiftung, Landis & Gyr Stiftung
Stück Labor is a promotional programme for new Swiss drama. Each season, renowned Swiss theatres work with authors-in-residence whose plays are then premiered there the following year. In addition to the texts, the authors-in-residence develop new formats in close exchange with the various teams, thus becoming the writing specialists of their respective theatres. Between desk and performance, experiment and well-made play, they work on the future drama. Stück Labor coordinates the actual concerns of the partners, ensuring networking and coaching support for the authors. Theater Basel established the programme in 2011. In addition to last year’s partner, Theater St. Gallen, Théâtre du Jura in Delémont and Konzert Theater Bern have joined the event.

Training scheme for children and young people The ballet school at Theater Basel has been offering a wide-ranging training scheme since 2001. More than 200 children, young people and adults receive training in basic skills and leisure-based activities. Around 130 children and young people attend the pre-professional and professional training schemes. They receive first-class training in close cooperation with the professional company. Basics for a professional career Graduates of the stage dance apprenticeship have been given employment contracts at renowned houses and in prestigious companies. The school is run as an association and is closely linked to the City of Basel and the ballet company in Basel. Every year in December the ballet school of Theater Basel performs the Christmas classic ‹Der Nussknacker› and in the summer it puts on a ballet gala on the Grosse Bühne. Theatergenossenschaft As a member of the Theatergenossenschaft you actively participate in the theatre’s work. Once a year, you will be invited to the annual general meeting. The Regionale Interessengemeinschaft (RIG) is a community of committed theatre enthusiasts who support the theatre within the bounds of their capability. We accompany theatre professionals in the fields of opera, theatre and ballet in Basel and also think outside the box. Particularly popular are the meetings and discussions with the dramaturges, actors and directors. The programme also includes excursions to other theatres at home and abroad as well as theatre trips. The RIG was founded in 1993 as an association. The aim was to better embed the threesection theatre Theater Basel in the local community beyond the borders of Basel-Stadt. Demands for budget cuts at that time were the reason for establishing the association. The RIG advocated a financing model that included the surrounding areas inside and outside Switzerland more.
