ear all, The feeling we get when we start on a new issue. The feeling we get every time we open an email full of beautiful, inspiring imagery. The feeling we get when someone sends us a photo of themselves reading Atlas. That feeling? Adrenaline.

The Adrenaline Issue is packed full of vibrant, exciting content. Ranging from the soft and sensual images of Hsu Hsaing Jen, to the quirky, fun work of Kari Sverris, to the power-woman vibes in Jacob Hodgkinson’s images, there is something in this issue to captivate everybody.

It’s been three months since we launched our first print and digital issue–– time flies. These last few months have been absolutely incredible. We’ve met so many new people and connected with such talented creatives. The response to Atlas’ new look has been phenomenal and it really is all down to the mastermind that is Jessica Bailey, our graphic designer. She’s taken Atlas to a level of sophistication that we could never have imagined before.

We have been lucky enough to feature an interview with exciting up-and-coming fashion designer, Edeline Lee who is an inspiration to any aspiring designer. She talks about what it was like to work alongside Alexander McQueen, her time at Central St Martins, as well as provides absolutely key advice on how to develop a career as a successful designer.

We’ve also been joined by two new team members: Jasmin Rauha and Paris Richardson. Jasmin is our Online Editor and is in charge of selecting work to feature on our blog. If you’d like to show her your work and chat about an online feature, you can email her at web@theatlasmagazine. com. Paris is a current student in English and Creative Writing, and she’s come on to contribute her writing to Atlas’ website, as well as future issues of the magazine. We’re so excited to be growing–– not only as a team, but as a community. There are now over 6000 of you following Atlas on Facebook, and 5500 of you on Instagram… and that number just doesn’t seem to stop growing! We’re so happy that we can inspire so many people and allow creative people to be seen by so many.

One of the highlights for Olivia this month has been the possibility to meet and chat with YouTuber Estée Lalonde; AKA Essie Button. You can read all about what it was like to move to a foreign country for love and how she really began her career as a pioneer of the internet. We’re working so hard to bring you a beautifully curated, exciting, inspiring magazine, and we really hope that you enjoy looking through the Adrenaline Issue! Thank you all so much again for your ongoing support in Atlas Magazine’s journey. We love having you along for the ride. Get your adrenaline pumping! Olivia Bossert & Megan Breukelman Editors

INTERVIEWED BY Olivia Bossert

Edeline Lee is an up and coming fashion designer from Canada. After graduating from Central St Martins in London, she went onto work alongside Alexander McQueen, Zac Posen, John Galliano and worked as the Head Designer for Rodnik. It was in spring 2012 that Edeline was commissiond by jewellery designer Cora Sheibani to design a collection for her jewels to be displayed with. One thing lead to another, and her collection began receiving raving reviews in Vogue, Women’s Wear Daily and Harper’s Bazaar. I was invited to Edeline’s Spring Summer 2015 presentation in September 2014, and totally adored not only the clothes, but the whole aesthetic behind the collection… I had to get to know the designer behind it all! Tell the Atlas readers about your spring / summer collection. What is it about? I was inspired by the process of restoring and decorating my Victorian house in East London. I took down a couple of walls on my own, a seriously empowering thing to do. And I discovered that construction in building is not all that different from construction in clothing. There is the foundation, and then the structure, the lining, the layers, the seams, the way that you join the seams, the mitred joints, the measurements, the careful use of colour, the composition of a space, the attention to detail in the finishing. We worked with the British heritage paint company Little Greene to develop a series of room sets and screened films by Lily Silverton within them. For London Fashion Week we showed the girls within the rooms within a room within a room. It was a neverending perspective. What was it like studying at Central Saint Martins? It was seriously the best. Imagine being thrown together 24/7 with the most talented, most determined kids from all over the world, who all have the same dream. The teachers have really seen it all so it’s not easy to stand out. It was intensely inspiring and competitive at the same time.

27 Atlas Magazine

How does the fashion industry in the UK compare to Canada? I’ve only ever worked in London, New York and Paris, so haven’t had a chance to experience the fashion industry in Canada unfortunately. I would love to have an opportunity to connect back home.

...It was a neverending perspective.

You apprenticed at Alexander McQueen and John Galliano. What was that like?! I was really lucky to work in both those studios whilst they were both there. These designer’s work had so much influence on why I chose to study at Saint Martins, so I was living the dream. What do you think you took from those experiences? I learnt a lot, I still use the knowledge that I took away from those experiences every day.

John Bozinov was a Facebook discovery. Every couple of weeks, we put up Facebook status asking you to share links to your portfolios, or those of the people you admire. John was amongst those links. Hailing from Wellington in New Zealand, he primarily focuses on the photography of the environment which surrounds him. I became particularly taken with his editorial imagery, which seemed to combine his environmental photography and fashion in a new and exciting way.

INTERVIEW BY Olivia Bossert

ARTICLE

Tell us about yourself, what you do, and where you’re from? I’m John, a photographer from Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city. After living in NZ for 23 years I decided to move to Hamburg, where I’m currently based, so that I could experience a little more of the world. I enjoy spending a lot of my spare time alone walking among nature and exploring new places, and of course taking pictures as I go. What has it been like uprooting yourself from your life in NZ to move to Germany? Has the move affected your work? It’s a little bittersweet in many ways. Being an island country, New Zealand is fairly isolated from the rest of the world which can make travel difficult & expensive which often limits where and what I’m able to shoot. Germany is well situated in the middle of Europe so getting around is always very easy and the cultural diversity here is something that I don’t really experience on this scale back home. Of course I miss my friends & family though, so I do wish I could spend more time with them. Do you have a favourite place to shoot? I think I feel most comfortable in colder climates, I’m not entirely sure why but there’s something about being isolated in the cold of nature that brings me a deep comfort. I guess my favorite place to shoot would be Arthur’s Pass national park in NZ, the park has very few visitors during the winter months apart from the alpine parrots that can be seen flying together around the mountain tops. Spending time there brings me a lot of joy. You’re a big fan of using your iPhone to shoot. Can you tell us why? The face of photography has been changing rapidly over the last few years. The proliferation of smart phones has brought quality photography into

the pocket of millions of people all over the world, this new commonality among us means that we can now connect with each other through imagery in a way that we’ve not been able to in the past. To me photography is about connecting and sharing with others, I think the best way for me to do that is by shooting and editing with a device that everyone is familiar with and can relate to.

...there’s something about being isolated in the cold of nature that brings me a deep comfort. How does shooting on a mobile device make your work different? I think in a traditional sense photographers have always been separated from their audience by the professional gear they use, which was often very large & intimidating. Today smaller cameras and even mobile phones are capable of taking incredible photos when used in the right way, in this respect the gap between photographer and viewer is beginning to shrink. Perhaps people can connect and focus more on the content of an image when they know it was created with the same gear that they have in their pocket; at least this is what I’ve felt in my experience. I still enjoy shooting with a variety of cameras in different formats, though the community aspect with mobile photography is unique. Tell us about your trip to Iceland. Why did you travel there? I had been hearing a lot about Iceland over the past few years; how their little remote island was producing some of the world’s most amazing music, the beautiful volcanic, glacial and rocky landscapes and of course their unpredictable weather. Living in New Zealand I had only really ever known the

The Vreeland Legacy

Diana Vreeland’s incandescent joie de vivre has become the stuff of legends. Revered as the Empress of Fashion, the flame she carried for over half a century has yet to meet its match. I discovered Mrs.Vreeland the day I discovered how to trick my Mac into obtaining the coveted American Netflix (all 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls–– enough said). As I scrolled through the endless thumbnails, I stumbled upon the image of an unimaginably elegant woman, lying on a red couch. Surrounded by a meticulous explosion of similarly coloured knickknacks, it read: The Eye Has To Travel. In that frozen moment, perched in a garden of velveteen scarlet, Diana Vreeland is the embodiment of style.

“Welcome to New York… it’s been waiting for you.” I hate to ever disagree with the angelic Ms. Swift, but in the case of her poppy, pick-me-up love ballad to the city that never sleeps–– Taylor, you don’t know New York. Unfortunately for those who choose to throw themselves into the ever romanticized New York City, it has not been waiting for you. It waits for no one.

79 Atlas Magazine

New York is home to thousands of… well, thousands of you. People who are sprinting their way down the same path, with the same goals and the same endgame. At home, in high school, maybe even in college, your dream may have stood out, but here you are one of the pack. If you’re not pouncing on those internships and job openings the second they’re released, twenty other people already have. This may sound like discouragement but by all means, it is the opposite.

The big apple is a tough place to make your mark, just as it would be in any large metropolitan area. You can move through the city without makeup and in your laundry day clothing and never worry about being recognized–– unless you’re a main character on Sex and the City. In that case, you’ll run into every ex you’ve ever had. But for those of us abstaining from tutus and shoe fetishes, you can be a ghost when you really need to be. But who moves to a place like New York to disappear?

INTERVIEW BY Olivia Bossert

You’re probably going to think I’ve been living in a Cornish cave, or under a Swiss mountain, but the Youtube community is relatively new to me. It was only while googling bloggers I could send the previous issue of Atlas to that I mindfully ventured into this vast world. My first find was Zoella, followed by Tanya Burr, and before I knew it entire evenings were being spent watching tutorials, vlogs, morning routines, evening routines, sleep routines. You name it, and chances are I’ve watched it. I guess I’m officially addicted. I discovered Youtuber Estée Lalonde, AKA EssieButton, one evening while sprawled out on the couch in my pyjamas, clicking away at various videos. I watched one of her videos (probably a make-up haul of some kind), and went on to watch…, well, loads more! Something about Estée’s chatty, spontaneous style drew me in, grabbed my attention and made me want to get to know her. I found her videos light-hearted and charming and smile provoking. Having recently launched the first printed issue of Atlas, I wanted to connect with more people who would be interested in what we did. Estée ranked high up on my list of handpicked people I wanted to send Atlas to; for some reason I felt she would “get” our concept. So one morning, I opened up a blank email and made my first attempt at getting in touch. Within a few hours she’d sent me a lovely reply saying how excited she was to read the magazine. We began emailing back and forth, and before I knew it we’d set up the interview you are reading right now. Fan-girl moment!

91 Atlas Magazine

I met Estée at Tom’s Kitchen in London where we immediately got chatting about Youtube, blogging, the Internet, the magazine, make-up… Basically, we were being major girls.

...craving some sort of creative outlet, she decided to create a blog of her own. Over lunch, Estée told me all about growing up outside of Toronto, Canada. At the age of 20, she moved to the UK to be with her boyfriend, Aslan. They now live in London with their adorable greyhound, Reggie. Moving to another country is daunting for anyone, and I was surprised when Estée told me she’d never even visited the UK before moving. “There was a lot of excitement behind it, and I never really felt nervous, not even in the airport!” she explains. “I cried, obviously, but I was super excited to be with Aslan. I woke up after our first night in the apartment together, and that was when the nerves really began to set in.” Finding it difficult to adapt to her new home, Estée began browsing the Internet and stumbled upon the world of blogs and Youtube. Suddenly faced with plenty of time on her hands, craving some sort of creative outlet, she decided to create a blog of her own. Blogging not only brought Estée creative satisfaction, it also helped her form crucial friendships that made her feel more at home in the UK.
