O Palco de São Paulo está onde a Fundação Theatro Municipal está, seja no nosso teatro centenário, seja na Praça das Artes, na Sala do Conservatório ou em outros palcos e praças da cidade e de todo o país, onde nossos corpos artísticos se apresentam e de onde vêm os alunos de música e dança das nossas escolas. Em suma, fazer parte da vida do paulistano faz parte da história do Municipal, símbolo de uma cidade que é hoje referência para a cultura lírica do Brasil e da América Latina.

Right in the heart of town is the Stage of Sao Paulo, a factory of art and culture that offers excellence in form of opera, concert, ballet, choral music, chamber music, contemporary music, Brazilian instrumental music...which not only produces events for Sao Paulo, but above all reflects the importance and diversity of one of the world’s ten largest metropolises. The Stage of Sao Paulo is where the Theatre Foundation is, whether in our centenary theatre, whether in the Arts Square, in the Conservatory Hall or in other stages and city squares and across the country squares, where our artistic ensembles perform and where our schools' music and dance students come from. To sum up, being a part of the Sao Paulo residents’ lives is like being a part of the town history, a symbol of a city that is now a reference to the lyrical culture of Brazil and Latin America.

A factory of art and culture
A realização de uma temporada lírica de excelência, com mais de 300 artistas envolvidos diretamente em cada montagem – entre solistas, instrumentistas, coralistas, bailarinos, atores e realizadores –, já é um mérito para qualquer grande teatro do mundo, mas em São Paulo a Fundação Theatro Municipal promove uma gama de outras atividades artísticas e de formação. Além das óperas, a Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal mantém no Theatro Municipal uma temporada regular de concertos sinfônicos, com apresentações como a do Réquiem de Mozart com regência de Rinaldo Alessandrini, que em 2013 ganhou o prêmio de Melhor Concerto Nacional, do Guia do jornal Folha de São Paulo. O Balé da Cidade de São Paulo realiza temporadas de espetáculos no Theatro e participa das montagens das óperas; assim como o Coral Paulistano Mário de Andrade, que possui séries de apresentações no Salão Nobre do Theatro Municipal, na Sala do Conservatório e em outros teatros por toda a cidade, que em 2014 somaram mais de 15 diferentes palcos somente em São Paulo. Na Sala do Conservatório, sede do Quarteto de Cordas da Cidade de São Paulo, além do grupo residente e do Coral Paulistano, o espaço recebe outras séries, como as da Orquestra Experimental de Repertório, de Música de Câmara com instrumentistas da Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal e a série Instrumental no Conservatório, com uma seleção do que há de melhor na música instrumental brasileira.

The achievement of an opera season of excellence, with over 300 artists involved directly in each setting-up - among soloists, instrumentalists, choir singers, dancers, actors and directors - is already a great merit to any great theatre in the world, but in Sao Paulo, the Municipal Theatre Foundation promotes a range of other artistic and training activities. Besides the operas, the Sao Paulo City Simphony Orchestra holds a regular season of symphony concerts at the Municipal Theatre, with performances like that of Mozart's Requiem, conducted by Rinaldo Alessandrini, who in 2013 won the award for Best National Concert, given by the Programming Guide of Folha de São Paulo newspaper. The Sao Paulo City Ballet, which participates in the setting-up of the operas, also conducts seasons of spectacles at the Municipal; as well as the Paulistano Choir Mário de Andrade, which has series of presentations in the Noble Hall of the Municipal Theatre, the Conservatory Hall and other theatres throughout the city, which in 2014 totaled over 15 different stages in Sao Paulo alone. In the Conservatory Hall, home of the Sao Paulo City String Quartet, besides the resident group and the Paulistano Choir, the space receives other series, such as those of the Orquestra Experimental de Repertório, of Chamber Music with instrumentalists of the Sao Paulo City Symphony Orchestra and the instrumental series at the Conservatory, with a selection of the very best in Brazilian instrumental music.

Além da Sala do Conservatório, a Praça das Artes promove e recebe outros eventos em seus espaços e abriga as escolas e grupos artísticos da Fundação Theatro Municipal, com uma circulação interna diária de mais de duas mil pessoas, entre alunos, professores, músicos, artistas, equipes administrativas, equipes de produção e funcionários, somand0-se a este número o público dos eventos. Às atividades dos grupos profissionais e da OER, somam-se os eventos de formação das escolas de Música e de Dança. Com mais de 1.500 alunos, paralelamente às aulas as escolas realizam encontros, masterclasses, recitais e apresentações de seus grupos internos: o Atelier Balé Jovem, o Coral Infantojuvenil, Coral Juvenil, Coral Adulto, a Orquestra Infantojuvenil, a Orquestra Jovem, a Big Band da escola, o Grupo de Cordas, o Quarteto de Violoncelos e os grupos de música de câmara da Escola Municipal de Música, que se apresentam no auditório da escola e na Sala do Conservatório. As atividades promovidas pela Fundação Theatro Municipal incluem ainda palestras gratuitas sobre as óperas, visitas guiadas aos edifícios, exposições, shows de cultura popular e performances, em uma plêiade de eventos que fazem com que a Fundação Theatro Municipal realize na média de todo o ano uma apresentação a cada 1,5 dias.

Besides the Conservatory Hall, the Square of Arts promotes and gets other events in its facilities and houses schools and art ensembles of the Municipal Theater Foundation, with a daily internal circulation of more than two thousand people, including students, teachers, musicians, artists, management teams, production teams and employees, adding to this figure the audience of the events. To the activities of professional groups and of the OER, it is added up the training events of the schools of Music and Dance. With over 1,500 students, simultaneously to the classes, the schools conduct meetings, master classes, recitals and presentations of their internal groups: the Youth Ballet Atelier, the Children and Youth Choir, the Youth Choir, the Adult Choir, the Children and Youth Orchestra, the Youth Orchestra, the school's Big Band, the String Ensemble, the Cellos Quartet and the chamber music ensembles of the Municipal School of Music, which perform in the school auditorium and in the Conservatory Hall. The activities promoted by the Municipal Theatre Foundation also include free lectures on the operas, guided tours to buildings, exhibitions, events of popular culture and performances, in a host of events that cause the Municipal Theatre Foundation to accomplish an average throughout the year of a presentation every 1.5 days.

A century of history
Por oito anos a cidade de 300 mil habitantes viu ser erguido ao lado do Vale do Anhangabaú e do Viaduto do Chá um imponente teatro, inspirado na arquitetura da grande casa de ópera parisiense e tendo como construtor o engenheiro Ramos de Azevedo, que fazia sucesso com suas monumentais edificações na pacata cidade que se desenvolvia rapidamente impulsionada pela indústria e pelo café. Após consumidos 4.500.000 tijolos, 750 toneladas de ferro, além de cristais da Boêmia, mosaicos venezianos, estátuas alemãs e tapeçaria milanesa, era inaugurado em 12 de setembro de 1911 o Theatro Municipal de São Paulo. Naquela noite de estreia, com a apresentação da ópera Hamlet, de Ambroise Thomas, com o famoso barítono Titta Ruffo, nas imediações do Municipal estavam mais de 100 dos 300 automóveis da cidade, ocasionando um engarrafamento inédito, visto por cerca de 20 mil pessoas que se aglomeravam para acompanhar a entrada dos célebres convidados. Nas décadas seguintes, o Theatro entrou para o roteiro das grandes companhias líricas internacionais, que trouxeram a São Paulo muitos dos principais artistas do mundo. Mas além da ópera, o Theatro recebia eventos da sociedade paulistana, como formaturas e bailes de Carnaval, com até quatro mil foliões, mas foi em 1922 que ocorreu no palco do Municipal um dos eventos mais importantes da cultura nacional, a Semana de Arte Moderna, movimento inaugural do Modernismo no Brasil. Após décadas de atividades irregulares e duas grandes reformas, o Theatro foi reinaugurado em seu centenário e foi criada a Fundação Theatro Municipal de São Paulo. Com a chegada, em 2013, dos diretores José Luiz Herencia e John Neschling e a parceria com o Instituto Brasileiro de Gestão Cultural, um novo momento histórico teve início, com a consolidação do Theatro Municipal como referência na produção lírica brasileira; como O Palco de São Paulo.
For eight years the city of 300 000 inhabitants saw an imposing theatre being built beside the AnhangabaĂş Valley and the Cha Overpass, inspired by the architecture of the great Parisian opera houses and having the Engineer Ramos de Azevedo as its builder, who had succeeded with his monumental buildings in the quiet town that was developing rapidly, driven by industry and coffee. Upon the consumption of 4.5 million bricks, 750 tons of iron, and also Bohemian crystals, Venetian mosaics, German statues and Milanese tapestry, The Sao Paulo Municipal Theatre was opened on September 12, 1911. At the opening night, with the presentation of the opera Hamlet, by Ambroise Thomas, with the famous baritone Titta Ruffo, near the Municipal Theatre there were more than 100 cars, out of the 300 cars in the city, causing unprecedented traffic jam, seen by approximately 20,000 people flocked to monitor the entry of celebrity guests. In the following decades, the Theatre took part in the itinerary of large international lyrical companies, which brought many of the world's leading lyrical artists to Sao Paulo. But besides opera, the Sao Paulo Municipal Theatre received society events such as graduation and Carnival balls, with up to four thousand partygoers, but it was in 1922 that one of the most important events of national culture, the Modern Art Week, an inaugural movement of Modernism in Brazil, took place on stage at the Municipal Theatre. After decades of irregular activities and two major renovations, the Theatre was reopened in its one hundredth anniversary and the Sao Paulo Municipal Theatre Foundation was created. With the arrival in 2013 of the directors JosĂŠ Luiz Herencia and John Neschling and partnership with the Brazilian Institute of Cultural Management, a new historic moment began with the consolidation of the Municipal Theatre as a reference in Brazilian lyrical production, the Stage of Sao Paulo.

Novo ícone arquitetônico no centro de São Paulo, a Praça das Artes liga a Rua Conselheiro Crispiniano, a calçada da Avenida São João e o Vale do Anhangabaú, oferecendo à população um espaço com arte e cultura, que contribui com a requalificação urbana do centro histórico de São Paulo. Além de ser sede dos corpos artísticos e das escolas da Fundação Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, a Praça das Artes realiza em seus espaços as séries musicais na Sala do Conservatório, promove exposições e recebe eventos como a São Paulo Fashion Week, o lançamento da SP Cine, o Mercado Gastronômico, a Mostra Internacional de Cinema, além de servir como espaço de seminários e fóruns, sem jamais deixar de ser um local de passagem e de convivência para a população de São Paulo.

Then a new architectural icon in downtown Sao Paulo came up, the Arts Square, linking Conselheiro Crispiniano Street, the sidewalk of Sao Joao Avenue and soon AnhangabaĂş Valley, offering people an area with art and culture, contributing to an urban requalification of the historical downtown Sao Paulo.
In addition to being the seat of artistic ensembles and schools of the Sao Paulo Municipal Theatre Foundation, the Arts Square has held musical series in the Conservatory Hall, as well as exhibitions, and has received events as the Sao Paulo Fashion Week, the launch of the SP Cine, the Gourmet Market, the International Film Festival, as well as being used as an area for seminars and forums, but always being a place of passage and coexistence for the population of Sao Paulo.

Construída em 1896, a Sala do Conservatório inicialmente foi uma loja de pianos, que tinha no andar superior uma sala de apresentações para exibição dos instrumentos. Em 1899 passou a abrigar um luxuoso hotel e, em 1909, se tornou sede do Conservatório Dramático e Musical de São Paulo, local de encontro de artistas como Camargo Guarnieri, Francisco Mignone, Mário de Andrade, Guiomar Novaes, Souza Lima, Euclides da Cunha e Camille Saint-Saëns. Após anos de abandono, o edifício passou por restauro para integrar a Praça das Artes e abrigar, a partir de 2013, as atividades pedagógicas das escolas de música e dança, as séries de música instrumental brasileira, de música de câmara, apresentações do Coral Paulistano Mário de Andrade, da Orquestra Experimental de Repertório e outros espetáculos promovidos pela Fundação Theatro Municipal de São Paulo.

a store where pianos were sold, which had a presentation room upstairs for displaying the instruments. In 1899 it housed a luxury hotel , and in 1909, it became the headquarters of the Dramatic and Musical Conservatory of Sao Paulo, a meeting point for artists such as Camargo Guarnieri, Francisco Mignone, Mário de Andrade, Guiomar Novaes, Souza Lima, Euclides da Cunha and Camille Saint-Saëns. After years of neglect, the building went through a renovation to integrate the Arts Square and then has housed, from 2013, the educational activities of dance and music schools, the series of Brazilian instrumental music, chamber music, presentations of the Paulistano Choir 'Mario de Andrade', the Orquestra Experimental de Repertório and other events sponsored by the Sao Paulo Municipal Theatre Foundation.

Após décadas de isolamento dos corpos artísticos do Theatro Municipal, a atual gestão da Fundação Theatro Municipal de São Paulo iniciou um projeto inédito de integração, que conseguiu fazer com que os resultados dos diferentes grupos sejam muito maiores do que a soma de suas atividades individuais. Com a inauguração da Praça das Artes, a Escola Municipal de Música, antes sediada na Rua Vergueiro, passou a ocupar as dependências da Praça, assim como a Escola de Dança de São Paulo, que se transferiu dos baixos do Viaduto do Chá, para se estabelecer no primeiro módulo do novo edifício. A Orquestra Experimental de Repertório - OER, que utilizava a Galeria Olido, também passou a ter a Praça das Artes como casa, e o Quarteto de Cordas da Cidade, outro dos corpos artísticos da Fundação Theatro Municipal, transferiu-se para a Praça, assumindo como sede a restaurada Sala do Conservatório. A proximidade de grupos antes tão distantes fisicamente foi um catalisador para as ações de integração. Hoje, a OER promove concertos regulares com o Coral Paulistano Mário de Andrade; os músicos da Orquestra Jovem Municipal de São Paulo se apresentam com a OER; e os alunos da Experimental tocam como estagiários da Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal. O Coro Lírico Municipal realiza na Praça das Artes ensaios de seus repertórios, abertos aos alunos da Escola Municipal de Música; e a OER faz seus ensaios gerais no hall de eventos da Praça, para os alunos das duas escolas e para todos os funcionários e frequentadores da Praça das Artes.

After decades of isolation from the artistic ensembles of the Municipal Theatre, the current management of the Sao Paulo Municipal Theatre Foundation started an unprecedented integration project, which could make the results of different groups become far greater than the sum of their individual activities alone. With the opening of the Arts Square, the Municipal School of Music, earlier headquartered on Vergueiro Street, came to occupy the facilities of the Square, as well as the Dance School of Sao Paulo, which moved from underside the Cha Overpass, to be set up at the first module of the new building. The Orquestra Experimental de Repertório - OER, which used the area of the Olido Gallery, also happened to have the Arts Square as home, and the Sao Paulo City String Quartet, another artistic ensemble of the Municipal Theatre Foundation, moved to the Square, taking over the restored Conservatory Hall as its house. The proximity of groups that were earlier so far away physically was a catalyst for the integration actions. Today, the OER holds regular concerts with the Paulistano Choir 'Mario de Andrade'; musicians from the Sao Paulo City Youth Orchestra perform with the OER; and OER students play as interns at the Sao Paulo City Symphony Orquestra. The Sao Paulo Opera Lyric Choir performs its repertoire rehearsals at the Arts Square, open to students of the Municipal School of Music; and the OER makes its regular rehearsals in the Square events hall for students from both schools and to all Square of Arts staff and goers.

Beyond the Castle Walls
Em sintonia com as diretrizes da Secretaria Municipal de Cultura, a Fundação Theatro Municipal desenvolve ações de descentralização, para apresentações dos Corpos Artísticos em espaços distintos da Cidade e do País. Ao entender que em São Paulo não há teatros de primeira e segunda ordem, assim como não há diferenças entre os cidadãos em razão de suas localidades, os grupos da Fundação Theatro Municipal se apresentam em teatros municipais como o Auditório Ibirapuera, o Teatro João Caetano, o Teatro Arthur de Azevedo, o Teatro Paulo Eiró e em parques, igrejas, centros comunitários e em diferentes CEUs da Cidade de São Paulo. Outras ações, como a criação do Coral da Cidade Tiradentes pelo Coral Paulistano Mário de Andrade, reafirmam o compromisso de levar a Fundação Theatro Municipal para além do centro de São Paulo.

In line with the guidelines of the Municipal Department of Culture, the Municipal Theatre Foundation develops programs of decentralization, for presentations of Artistic Ensembles in different areas of Sao Paulo and the Country. By realizing that in S達o Paulo there are no theatres of first and second importance, as there are no differences among citizens because of their locations, Municipal Theatre Foundation groups perform in local theaters as the Ibirapuera Auditorium, the Jo達o Caetano Theatre, the Arthur de Azevedo Theatre, the Paulo Eir坦 Theatre and in parks, churches, community centers and in different CEUs of S達o Paulo. Other actions, such as the creation of the Tiradentes City Choir by the Paulistano Choir 'Mario de Andrade', reaffirm the commitment to take the Municipal Theatre Foundation beyond downtown Sao Paulo.

Diretor Artístico do Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, John Neschling voltou ao Brasil após alguns anos na Europa e depois de ter por 12 anos reestruturado a Osesp, transformando-a em um ícone da música sinfônica na América Latina. Dirigiu os teatros de São Carlos em Lisboa, de St. Gallen na Suíça, de Bordeaux, o Massimo de Palermo e foi residente da Ópera de Viena. Dirigiu ainda, nos anos de 1990, os teatros municipais do Rio de Janeiro e de São Paulo. Neschling nasceu no Rio de Janeiro em 1947 e seus principais mestres foram Heitor Alimonda, Esther Scliar, Georg Wassermannn, Hans Swarowsky e Leonard Bernstein. Neschling é membro da Academia Brasileira de Música.

Artistic Director of the Sao Paulo Municipal Theatre, John Neschling returned to Brazil after a few years in Europe and after having restructured Osesp for 12 years, turning it into an icon of symphonic music in Latin America. One of the major instrumental ensembles in Latin America, the Sao Paulo City Symphony Orquestra was established in 1921, ten years after the opening of the Municipal Theatre. Since then, it has performed both in lyrical seasons as those with the Sao Paulo City Ballet and in symphony concerts with conductors such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Kurt Masur, Camargo Guarnieri and Eleazar de Carvalho, in addition to composers conducting their own works, such as Villa-Lobos, Francisco Mignone and Krzysztof Penderecki. O Balé da Cidade de São Paulo foi criado em 1968 com o nome de Corpo de Baile Municipal. Em 1974, a companhia assumiu o perfil de dança contemporânea e se tornou presença destacada no cenário da dança sul-americana. Em 1981, passou a se chamar Balé da Cidade de São Paulo e a bem-sucedida carreira internacional teve início com a participação na Bienal de Dança de Lyon, França, em 1996. Desde então, as turnês europeias têm sido aclamadas tanto pela crítica especializada quanto pelo público de todos os grandes teatros onde se apresenta. Atualmente, o grupo é dirigido por Iracity Cardoso.

A atual formação conta com os violinistas Betina Stegmann e Nelson Rios, o violista Marcelo Jaffé e o violoncelista Robert Suetholz, músicos de intensa atividade no cenário musical brasileiro e de prestígio internacional, que se destacam também pela atuação em concertos, recitais e atividades pedagógicas. Sao Paulo City Ballet was established in 1968 under the name of Municipal Corps de Ballet. In 1974, the company took over the profile of contemporary dance and became a prominent presence on the South American dance scene. In 1981, it was renamed as Sao Paulo City Ballet and a successful international career began with its participation in the Biennial of Dance, in Lyon, France, in 1996. Since then, European tours have been acclaimed both by critics as by the public in all major Theatres where it stands. Currently, Iracity Cardoso heads the group.

Present for more than seven decades in the opera seasons of the Sao Paulo Municipal Theatre, the Sao Paulo Opera Lyric Choir is formed by some of the best Brazilian singers, participating in the setting-up of operas and performing regular participation as soloists inside and outside the Municipal Theatre. The choir was established in 1939 under the direction of Conductor Armando Belardi, then the theatre’s artistic director. Since December 2013, under the direction of Conductor Bruno Greco Facio, the Lyric Choir has excelled in new productions undertaken by the Sao Paulo Municipal Theatre Foundation.

Criada em 1990, a partir da Orquestra Jovem Municipal de São Paulo, hoje tem como sede a Praça das Artes e integra a diretoria de formação da Fundação Theatro Municipal, como parte da política de integração que envolve a Escola Municipal de Música e as orquestras infanto-juvenil e jovem municipais de São Paulo. Desde fevereiro de 2014, o grupo tem direção do maestro Carlos Moreno.

O Coral Paulistano foi criado em 1936 por Mário de Andrade, então diretor do Departamento Municipal de Cultura, como um dos muitos desdobramentos do movimento modernista da Semana de Arte Moderna de 1922. Having over two decades of history, the Orquestra Experimental de Repertório is one of the main groups that have been forming new orchestral instrumentalists in our country. Created in 1990 from the Sao Paulo City Youth Orchestra, nowadays it is hosted at the Arts Square and integrates the board of education of the Municipal Theatre Foundation, as part of the integration policy involving the Municipal School of Music and the Sao Paulo City Young Children and Youth Orchestras of Sao Paulo. Since February 2014, conductor Carlos Moreno has directed the group.

The Paulistano Choir was created in 1936 by Mário de Andrade, then director of the Municipal Department of Culture as one of the many ramifications of the modernist movement of the Modern Art Week in 1922. After decades without fulfilling its original mission, in 2013 the group was strengthened and upgraded by the Municipal Theatre Foundation, changing its name to Paulistano Choir 'Mário de Andrade'. Recognized for the quality of teachers and forming many of the active instrumentalists and singers in orchestras and lyrical seasons in Brazil, the Municipal School of Music of Sao Paulo was founded in 1969 and from the early times has offered excellence teaching at no cost to the population of Sao Paulo. The approximately 800 students have the option to study all the instruments of a symphony orchestra, as well as conducting, singing, saxophone, harpsichord, flute and guitar. The courses also offer practice in chamber music ensembles, ancient music, big band, madrigal and choir. It also provides for the participation of students in Young Children and Youth Orchestras of the Municipal School of Music.

The Dance School of SĂŁo Paulo was founded in 1940, still called Experimental School of Classical Dance, with the goal of training amateur dancers to cover the ballets of large domestic and foreign lyrical montages that had seasons in Sao Paulo. Three years later, upon the need for a larger area for classes and rehearsals, it moved to the underside of the Cha Overpass, moving again in 2013 to the Arts Square. In May 2011, the school was renamed as the Sao Paulo Dance School, and inaugurated a new phase in its history, with the renovation of its artistic and pedagogical bases, ensuring continuity and amplitude to the transformation process and free training for young dancers in Sao Paulo.
