LETTER FROM THE EDITOR The Year of Me AVID is officially two years old, we made it!!! 2019 has been a phenomenal year for AVID Magazine.

In 2016, I set out to help business owners get their businesses recognized because of my personal struggles. I created a media outlet and over these past two years, AVID Magazine has featured over 2,500 businesses, events, and entrepreneurs via social media, our website, and through our quarterly digital magazine.

Is is with great pleasure that I announce that AVID Magazine is now in seven countries and we have over 150,000 readers worldwide in two years.

During the last quarter of 2019, you should have been planning your 2020 year out. It’s important that you set 30, 60, and 90 day goals for you and your business.

Make your business known and follow Diddy’s approach in marketing by shameless promoting. Make one of your goals this year to become more visible and stop at no cost to put your brand in front of thousands.

Most people want money, power, and accolades, however they do not equal self-love and acceptance. A few years ago, I read “Year of Yes,” by Shonda Rhimes and it was so relateable. Often times we do not give ourselves enough credit for the things we are great at. We are quick to automacially count things out because we have already decided in our minds that the answer is NO. In her memoir “Year of Yes”, Shonda Rhimes lives up to her promise to show the world “How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person.” She states that we have to start saying yes to five things. Three of those things stuck out to me personally and hopefully they can help you as well.

1. Say YES to your voice - You have the power to impact your corner of the world for the better by swallowing your fear, standing up for what’s right and speaking out in love.

You never know how your voice can change a person’s life.

2. Say ‘Yes’ to Saying ‘No’ - Difficult conversations are sometimes necessary for personal growth and for the health of your relationships and the people who love you will want to grow along with you. Learn to say ‘no’ to things and people that are sucking the life out of you. When you understand that you deserve good things, saying ‘no’ to the bad things becomes so much easier.

3. Say ‘Yes’ to Real Friendships - Believe people when they show you who they really are. It is not only fair to them, it’s also fair to you. When you become an honest, healthy person, you can cultivate honest, healthy relationships with others.

As always, soar in 2020 and never feel bad about your blessings. Here are some points to focus on. 1. Keep God first, pray, and stay humble. 2. Focus on your purpose 3. Develop a different mindset. Poverty, Inc. is to provide socks, clothing and other material goods to men, women, boys, and girls that are in need or less fortunate. Through the services and donations of this organization, poverty will be reduced and lives restored. Sock Out Poverty is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission to Sock Out Poverty One Step At A Time ! “Sock Out Poverty” was birthed by child actress Princess Jackson because of her fondness for socks and seeing the need in the community.

Princess came up with the idea to raise donations which would cover the needs of men, women, boys, and girls who were in need of a new pair(s) of socks. Her goal is to reduce poverty and provide socks for the less fortunate, therefore Socking Out Poverty One Step At A Time!

AVID: What do you specialize in, what are you most known for? Sock Out Poverty is a 501(C)3 nonprofit organization who provide socks, clothing and other material goods to men, women, boys, and girls that are in need or less fortunate. Everyone has a story about why they started, what’s your’s? While on a blanket drive with my mom, I noticed the homeless didn’t have socks to keep them warm. Because of my passion to give back to the community and my fondness for socks, Sock Out Poverty was created. Sock Our Poverty gives the most needed yet overlooked item to the less fortunate, and that’s a new pair of socks.

Being in business can be hard and difficult sometimes, what keeps you motivated? I take 30 min a day to focus on something positive and pour back into me. I listen to daily inspirational messages, meditation, and uplifting songs. This keeps me balance and able to handle challenges when they come 8

What can we look forward to from you in the upcoming year? I’m going to host my Sock Out Poverty Campaign in Chicago in 2020. We are excited to continue to go global and Sock Out Poverty all over the world What has been the hardest thing about being in business? Balancing my business, my acting career, and school.

What are the failures that you most cherish? I don’t consider to have failed but allow challenges that I face to either redirect me or reevaluate myself and how I can improve in a certain area. Failure leads to success. Kevin Gates said, “Learn from everytime you ever failed, if it never failed then grind smarter.”

What did you want to be when you grew up? I’m living my dream now. I’m a child actress and a business owner of a nonprofit organization What do you do in your free time? I like to keep a good balance so I listen to music and hang out with my friends in my free time.

How would you describe yourself in one word? Prolific What sets you apart from others who are doing the same thing? My creativity to accomplish my mission and goals. To stay focus and stay in my lane.

What is a philosophy or quote that you live by? “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” -Philippians 4:13 If you could offer one piece of advice to someone wanting to follow your path, what would it be? What do you specialize in, what are you most known for?

We specialize in Girl Empowered Workshops through Chicks With Class centers, school curriculum and girls conferences.

Everyone has a story about why they started, what’s your’s?

I grew up in Milwaukee, WI and as a young girl I lacked confidence and overall self esteem. It wasn’t until I developed social skills and overcame my fear of speaking to people that I gained my self esteem.

My social skills were developed through the training I received in the military, internships I’ve held and the time I spent obtaining my undergraduate degree at Texas Southern University.

It dawned on me one day that if young girls were exposed to more of the experiences I had they too would have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Girls with low self esteem don’t realize their full potential because of fear or lack of enthusiasm to even try. This is why I created my company Chicks With Class™️ where we provide unique workshops to girls which help them reach their full potential.

We are the first for profit Girls Email Company listed as a Public Benefit Corpotation in the United States. I’ve developed a way to commercialize my technique so that I am creating opportunities for both shareholders and stakeholders.

Being in business can be hard and difficult sometimes, what keeps you motivated? The opportunities my company is creating duke stakeholders being the girls impacted by our programs, schools and organizations. My motivation also comes from the shareholders such as the franchisees and licensees.

What can we look for ward to from you in the upcoming year? We plan to open up multiple locations in Texas and spread to surrounding cities and states. We also want our curriculum to be implemented throughout Texas schools and surrounding states.

What has been the hardest thing about being in business? Access to funding for my type of entity. I am the first to market so it takes a bit more for investment and banks to understand my business model. It’s also extremely difficult to handle work/life balance. With an infant and 2 boys both in elementary school it’s been hard to manage everything while keeping the business goals met.

What are the failures that you most cherish? I cherish all of my failures because they are all opportunities for me to learn. The one that sticks out the most however is my most recent failure to launch a

product on time. I learned that I didn’t have all of the pieces to the puzzle together but we went back to the drawing board. After looking at things from all angles, of the product would’ve launched we wouldn’t have been able to handle the growth which would’ve put the brand at risk.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I actually wanted to be a lawyer because I was great a arguing my point and having others agree with me.

What do you do in your free time? I spend my free time traveling the world with my children.

How would you describe yourself in one word? Resilient What sets you apart from others who are doing the same thing? I developed a way to commercialize the girls empowerment industry providing opportunities for not only stakeholders but creating new opportunities for shareholders.

What is a philosophy or quote that you live by? Stay prepared so you don’t have to get prepared.

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone wanting to follow your path, what would it be?

Don’t give up because every struggle you’ve endured is worth it in the end if you just keep going.

I was recently selected out of 100 applicants for a 12 month fellowship with with Global Good Fund which highlights veteran entrepreneurs with social enterprises. This Fellowship will provided mentorship, leadership training and $10,000 grant to help my business grow.

What do you specialize in, what are you most known for? I’ve been asked the question if I specialize in residential or commercial design a lot. I specialize in making my clients dreams a reality and changing communities for the better. Some of our project types have included single family residential, churches, restaurants and medical offices. Our Clients project construction costs range from $150,000.00 to $60,000,000.00.

Everyone has a story about why they started, what’s your’s? I developed a passion for architecture at an earlier age growing up in New Orleans.

When I was 8 or 9 years old my grandmother use to take my brother and I to ride the street car on St. Charles Street. I was fascinated with the homes on the street. When we made it back to her house I use to try to draw some of the homes. After she passed a few years ago I found out she kept a lot of my drawings.

Being in business can be hard and difficult sometimes, what keeps you motivated? Two things keep me motivated. I enjoy bringing people dreams to reality. Many times when I meet a Client for the first time they have a sketch on a piece of paper of their idea. I have to now make that sketch become a reality. The second thing that keeps me motivated is my passion for architecture. Anytime someone ask me “Why did I got into architecture?” because they are doing something they are not happy doing. I always say “do what you are passionate about and it will never feel like work”.

What can we look forward to from you in the upcoming year? In 2020, Kenneth Robinson, APC will continue growing our design team. We also have a couple of ventures to be on the look out for.

What has been the hardest thing about being in business?

At one time the hardest things for me about being in business was separating work from personal. Because of my passion for architecture I found myself working 12 plus hours a day, since it did not feel like work, only to go to bed and wake up and do the same thing the next day. Now I understand I have to step away from work and focus on family and other things that make me happy.

What are the failures that you most cherish? I don’t look at things as failures. I have always looked at the bumps in the road as lessons learned. Those lessons have made me a better person, a better architect and a better entrepreneur.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a successful

What do you do in your free time? I like to spend time with my wife in my free time. It doesn’t matter if we are traveling or going out to eat or just sitting on the couch watching television.

How would you describe yourself in one word? Observant What sets you apart from others who are doing the same thing? People have told me the thing that sets me apart from others in my field is because I take the time to educate them on the design and construction processes. I feel its important for the Client to know whats going throughout their project.

What is a philosophy or quote that you live by? As long as I can remember I have lived by Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone wanting to follow your path, what would it be? If someone wanted to follow my path to become an entrepreneur I would tell them to find what they are passionate about and do it. Also get a mentor. I’ve had several over the years. My Mentors have been in my field and outside of my field. They are that person you can bounce an idea off of or that person who will tell you when you are doing something wrong. At the end of the day your Mentor wants to see you succeed.

Booked Design Space HTX Corey Ivory, owner and creative designer and Alexandria Greene Jones, co-owner and PR of Booked Design Space has definetly made a mark in 2019. Only being open for one year Booked Design Space creativity has captured the eyes of Houstonians since launching the African American Selfie Musuem. The selfie museum launched as a black history pop-up and now serves as a permanent museum in the heart of Houston’s Montrose.

Each room is designed to reflect real-life events and to celebrate moments in time that we may have taken for granted. For instance, the Houston 90’s bedroom is a replica of the owner and creative direcotr Corey Ivory’s, late brother’s bedroom who passed from kidney failure in 2012. He loved Houston music, and he introduced Corey to screwed and chopped music including Houston legends Big Hawk, Big Moe, and Dj screw just to name a few. Corey wanted to pay respect to his brother and also create nostalgic rooms that people can identify with.

After receiving an overwhelming response they decided to make Booked Design Space the home of the #afamexperience and a permanent fixture 12

to the city as a trademarked selfie museum. Many tourists, celebrities and Houstonians stopped by and posed for the gram on the nostalgic backgrounds including. History-Making Simone Biles, Rapper Tobe Nwigwe, H-town 4-real Rapper Kiotti, elected city officials and a slew of Houston influencers and entrepreneurs.

What is Booked Design Space Story? Well for us we just really wanted to give back to the community, and not only make it a safe space where not only African Americans

can come and feel good about the history of black culture but also where it is a fun interactive environment where other nationalities can come and take pictures and learn about black culture in a safe space.

How long did it take you both to open Booked Design Space? A lifetime but in all actuality it took one month.

We got the space in December and we got it up and running in January of 2019.

What has been the hardest thing about operating Booked Design Space? Corey: The amount of growth and success and be able to keep up.

Alex: On the hard side, we would have learned about permits, triple net commercial space, residential zoning, the things that you have to get in it to grow it and learn it.

The overhead cost, you might say this is how much it cost to run a business but you don’t factor in the lysol wipes, toilet paper,paper towels, the paper for the printer and ink. It’s just those little things. Growth but on the other side is knowing and learning it you grow through it.

How often do you change the build outs for the Booked Designed Space?

What keeps you motivated when times are low? Knowing that I have somebody who is going through the exact same thing that I am going through.

I think if I was doing it by myself, I would probably have given up but because he will see me and the days when he is low I am pulling him and the days where I am low he is pulling me. I have my husband and my child, he has his mom and his family that he supports so we see that and we want to be there for each other and keep each other grounded.

20/20 Vision - New Decade Identity Credit: American Optometric Association Having 20/20 vision does not necessarily mean you have perfect vision. 20/20 vision is a term used to express normal visual acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) measured at a distance of 20 feet.

In the New International Version of the English Bible the text reads: The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be healthy , thy whole body shall be full of light.

What do you see for your life in 2020? Or has your eyes (vision and purpose) been centered around what others see for you?

Life has a way of tainting our realities of who we really are. The moment we are born, the expectations, perceptions, and biases of others are placed upon us. From childhood through adulthood, these unrealistic expectations, misperceptions, and unfair prejudices compound until they become our standard for living. We strive to become someone we were never created to be. Though we feel the discontent in our hearts, we are unable to understand the void we feel. We often begin to feel confused, and wonder what is wrong with us. We have no idea that yes, we are flawed but, life’s flaws have also been placed upon us. One area that is flawed in our lives is our identity. We have no idea who we are! We will need 20/20 vision to gain clarity about our identity in this new year.

The only way to experience a fulfilling life of vision and purpose, is to first discover who you were truly created to be. I believe we were all created to be BARE - Be Authentic Real and Exposed.

Becoming BARE is a continual and intentional process which will require courage and perseverance.

The BARE process is a transformational strategic journey. It will be necessary for you to address your past, analyze your present, and act on your future.

The only way to discover your true, authentic, self is to first uncover the untruths of your past. Once you address your past, only then will you be able to accurately analyze your present.

Are you living life to the fullest, or have your expectations of and for yourself been a mere reflection of how others view you? Only after you have analyzed your current lifestyle and exposed its flaws, will you finally be ready to act on your future. Are you ready to dream? Do you believe you were created to be significant? I believe your destiny is in your hands. No one can take it from you unless you allow them to. The process of becoming BARE begins with a decision. The choice is yours to make.

Will you choose to live in the comfort of chaos, or in the freedom of becoming your BARE self?

Remember 20/20 vision only indicates the sharpness or clarity of vision at a distance. In this new decade, let your eyes (vision and purpose) look ahead, focus, and gain clarity of who you are today and throughout this year.

THE BUFFALO SOLDIERS NATIONAL MUSEUM The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum is the brainchild of Captain Paul Matthews, Vietnam Vet and Prairie View A&M Graduate.

At the BSNM, we preserve promote and perpetuate the history and legacy of the brave men and women who fought bled and died in the defense of America by showcasing memorabilia, artifacts, documents and etc. but most importantly we tell the stories that are often left out.

We provide educational programming, arts and theater programming-reenactments, tours onsite and offsite, and more.

We have the largest collection of African American Military memorabilia in the nation. I tell people all of the time we are the best kept secret in Houston, with hopes of one day turning this secret into a household topic. I am most proud that in our 18 almost 19 years history we continue to be that hub for military history, we get visitors from all over the World who 18

come specifically to see our exhibitions and that to me speaks volumes about not only the contributions made by African Americans but their influence on American culture.

African Americans have fought in military conflicts since colonial days.

However, the Buffalo Soldiers, comprised of former slaves, freemen and Black Civil War soldiers, were the first to serve during peacetime.

Once the Westward movement had begun, prominent among those blazing treacherous trails of the Wild West were the Buffalo Soldiers of the U.S. Army.

These African Americans were charged with and responsible for escorting settlers, cattle herds, and railroad crews.

The 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments also conducted campaigns against American Indian tribes on a western frontier that extended from Montana in the Northwest to Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona in the Southwest.

Throughout the era of the Indian Wars, approximately twenty percent of the U.S. Cavalry troopers were Black, and they fought over 177 engagements. The

combat prowess, bravery, tenaciousness, and looks on the battlefield, inspired the Indians to call them Buffalo Soldiers. The name symbolized the Native American’s respect for the Buffalo Soldiers’ bravery and valor. Buffalo Soldiers, down through the years, have worn the name with pride.

Buffalo Soldiers participated in many other military campaigns: The Spanish American War, The Philippine Insurrection, The Mexican Expedition, World War I, World War II, and the Korean Police Action.

Much have changed since the days of the Buffalo Soldiers, including the integration of all-military servicemen and women. However, the story of the Buffalo Soldiers remains one of unsurpassed courage and patriotism, and will be forever a significant part of the history of America.

African Americans have fought with distinction in all of this country’s military engagements. However, some of their most notable contributions and sacrifices came during the Civil War. During that conflict, more than 180,000 African Americans wore the Union Army blue.

Another 30,000 served in the Navy, and 200,000 served as workers on labor, engineering, hospital and other military support projects. More than 33,000 of these gallant soldiers gave their lives for the sake of freedom and their country.

Shortly after the Civil War, Congress authorized the formation of the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 38th, 39th, 40th, and 41st Infantry Regiments: Six all Black peacetime units. Later the four infantry regiments were merged into the 24th and 25th Infantries.

In countless skirmishes and firefights, the troopers won the respect of the Plains warriors who named “Buffalo Soldiers.”

African Americans accepted the badge of honor and wore it proudly.

At least 18 Medals of Honor were presented to Buffalo Soldiers during the Western Campaigns. Similarly, 23 African Americans received the nation’s highest military award during the Civil War. The purpose of the buffalo soldiers national museum (bsnm) is to educate the public and to preserve, promote and perpetuate. The history, tradition and outstanding contributions of america’s buffalo soldiers from the revolutionary war to the present.

Allen Experience - an interactive photography experience Everyone has a story about why they started, what’s your’s? I first picked up a camera while interning for Music World Entertainment under Mathew Knowles. I quickly realized the camera gave me access to certain rooms and events that sometimes were exclusive. I found a purpose in documenting my experiences and doing my best in capturing special moments. I really enjoyed the access that photography gave me.

Being in business can be hard and difficult sometimes, what keeps you motivated? What keeps me motivated is knowing that we live in a time where entrepreneurs and creatives can still tap into untouched areas of creativity. With the birth and advancement of social media we can share our ideas and creations with the world on a global scale. The biggest motivating factor is that we do not have to seek any single person's permission to do so. I'm also motivated by so many of my peers working in their passion.

What can we look forward to from you in the upcoming year? In the upcoming year I plan to bring my Shoot Your Shot C. Allen Experience concept to a variety of business types in the city of Houston and plan to bring it to other cities. We are starting in January with a host of Shoot Your Shot Pop-up Shoots.

What has been the hardest thing about being in business? The hardest thing about business is staying consistently on target with having to wear all the hats in our business. It's easy to focus attention on less important areas of our business instead of focusing on the bigger picture. Any22

body can do business and accept payments but actually growing your brand, distributing your clear concise message can be a big challenge.

You want people to "get it" but it takes turning supporters into ambassadors for your brand.

What are the failures that you most cherish? The failures that I most cherish is having to operate and create without having the budget and budgets that I would like.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I grow up I want to be an entrepreneur that introduces the world to new photography and lifestyle changes. For example, making learning photography a household thing instead of it just being a hobby. I would like to continue to be a visionary.

What do you do in your free time? In my free time I love attending movies, movie premieres, going to parks and newly added I enjoy visiting wineries.

How would you describe yourself in one word?

Visionary What sets you apart from others who are doing the same thing? My inclusive personality. I feel like knowledge is sharable as well as talents. I don't mind sharing my knowledge with others and knowing that I just like my fellow man or women who loves what they do.

What is a philosophy or quote that you live by?

The quote I live by is that Life should be fun and life should be simple.

We are only limited by our own imagination.

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone wanting to follow your path, what would it be? I would say in addition to studying your craft. One must practice practice practice and get out their and just start doing what it is they would like to do.

The Greater Houston Black Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of and promote greater unity among the African-American business community.

Right the GHBC, which is the second oldest Black Chamber of Commerce holds true to their mission to both secure and retain a broad and diverse base of members that reflect the culture of the Greater Houston community, and provide financial and volunteer resources to implement the Chamber’s initiatives.

In September 1935, several prominent community leaders organized the Houston Negro Chamber of Commerce (HNCC) to empower and promote African-American businesses in the city. They focused on encouraging business within African-American.

The office was in the black-owned Pilgrim Temple building from 1935 until moving to 2808 Wheeler in 1963.

Making a membership investment in the GHBC enhances a variety of chamber initiatives. From networking functions, to business referral, the GHBC’s many business development programs provide opportunities to connect with potential purchasers and build business relationships throughout the year.

The HNCC sought to promote the civic, economic, industrial agricultural and social welfare of Houston residents; encourage a larger patronage of black enterprises and practical education in the trades and arts to stimulate better business; and develop a more amicable relationship between racial groups. The organization also encouraged residents to pay their poll taxes in order to become eligible to vote, promoted fair housing and employment practices, contributed to international commerce, and held contests, better business forums, and banquets to motivate the African-American community. During World War II, their office served as a rations headquarters. A Junior Chamber was organized in 1942. The chamber also provided platforms for national leaders and partnered with government programs.

In 1964, under the leadership of Mack H. Hannah, Jr., the chamber changed its name to the Houston Citizens Chamber Of Commerce (HCCC). As the Chamber membership evolved, in 2013 the chamber rebranded its look and name to the Greater Houston Black Chamber of Commerce (GHBC).

Women have been actively involved in the HNCC since its formation and held offices as early as 1957. In 2014, GHBC appointed Vernita B. Harris as its first female Chairman of the Board of Directors.

> What do you specialize in, what are you most known for? For over 20 years, I have served as a principal attorney for the Guess Firm, where I represent clients in wills, probate, and trust matters. I have also represented clients in entertainment and business matters. For 2019-2020, I am humbled to serve as the Chair of the Board for the Greater Houston Black Chamber of Commerce. It is my privilege to work with our Board of Directors, Advisory Board, Foundation Board, members, and supporters to continue the forward movement of the Chamber and the state of Black business owners in the Houston area. > Everyone has a story about why they started, what’s your’s? I come from a family of lawyers, and while I was heavily influenced by my environment to join the family practice, I soon found great enjoyment in assisting others.

I’m proud of the Guess legacy that my family has created, but over the years, I have been able to create my own personal legacy. My occupation has given me the opportunity to enhance people’s lives and to ensure that justice prevails. > Being in business can be hard and difficult sometimes, what keeps you motivated? My commitment to integrity is at the forefront of all that I do. That commitment makes me accountable to serving others with excellence, which plan to do for the remainder of my career. > What can we look forward to from you in the upcoming year? 2020 will be a great year for the Greater Houston Black Chamber, as we celebrate 87 years of service and collaboration with Black business owners. We are seeing more and more thriving businesses in our community, and we will continue to provide resources and opportunities for more to join the ranks of Black business ownership. > What has been the hardest thing about being in business? The hardest thing about business is being patient while working towards your vision. I am a hard worker, so I don’t mind putting in the work. But, when you know how awesome something can become, it’s easy to become anxious. > What are the failures that you most cherish? I once considered it a failure that I did not “make it” early in life. Now, though, I’m glad that it took a while for me to see success.

What I wanted for myself in my 20s and 30s is so much more appreciated and better preserved in my 40s. I am more sober about life without the sting of cynicism. I also

know how to better pace myself. I’ve truly learned to embrace and appreciate who I am. > What did you want to be when you grew up? By no means am I perfect. But, I like who I’ve become and who I am becoming. This is who and where I should be, an African American business woman who is committed to other Black business owners through my work with the Greater Houston Black Chamber of Commerce. > What do you do in your free time? Because I am a fulltime attorney, my free time is filled with my duties as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Greater Houston Black Chamber of Commerce. I can’t think of a better way to spend my time than to help others live out their professional dreams. > How would you describe yourself in one word?

Multi-tasker > What sets you apart from others who are doing the same thing? What sets me apart from others is that I believe there is enough business, money and resources out there for everyone. My position at the GHBC allows me to literally share the wealth of information that is often hidden from or unavailable to my community. I feel personally invested in the success of other Black business owners because it is indicative of the success of the entire Black community. When one succeeds, few benefit. When we all succeed, we all benefit. > What is a philosophy or quote that you live by? Go through it, and then get over it! > If you could offer one piece of advice to someone wanting to follow your path, what would it be? Pray first! (LOL) This path has not been easy! Vallaire's was founded by me, Brooke Vallaire, in 2011, on the basis of originality, powerful individuals, and displaying elegance on the day-to-day basis. The company began by creating custom garments for women in the Houston area and later introduced Vallaire's for Men, founded by Brice Everhart in 2015, with a focus on men's accessories.

The reason why Vallaire's started was because of my love for art and continuously watching my mother, who was an ultimate go-getter and savvy business woman. She dressed in the most stylish silhouettes and I dreamed of one day dressing many women just like her. I began sketching at the age of nine and physically designed the first Vallaire's collection at fourteen years old. Since then, Vallaire's has continued to grow.

Being in business can be hard and difficult sometimes, what keeps you motivated? The thing that keeps me motivated is envisioning the young girl that always watched her mother, an ultimate go-getter and savvy business woman, who dressed in the most stylish silhouettes and dreamed of one day dressing many women just like her. That young girl was me.

What has been the hardest thing about being in business? The hardest thing about being in business was definitely in the beginning. Being that I founded the company at the age of fourteen, in 2011, I was a teenager with the target market of women which created a sense of disconnect. I had to cross the barrier of ageism and being taken seriously in the industry that I was embarking upon.

What are the failures that you most cherish?

At fifteen years old I had an opportunity to pitch my brand to a panel of judges and peers. I worked so hard on the presentation and knew that the pitch would be filmed. The day had come, and it was my turn to speak. After the first ten seconds of my presentation I completely froze up, starred into the camera and shamefully walked back to my seat. I was completely humbled in that moment and learned that it is important to cease your moment when you have the platform to do so. I vowed that the next time I would be given an opportunity to speak or represent myself, I would show who I really was with complete confidence. Now, at twenty-two years old, I see the growth and recognize how that ex28

perience impacted me as a person and businesswoman for my good.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

As a kid, I always pictured myself as an artist and fashion designer.

What do you do in your free time? In my free time I manage my art business, CreativeFlo; research current trends; mentor youth who aspire to be in the fashion or art field; and spend time with family and friends.

I am Brice M. Everhart, now twelve-year-old entrepreneur who launched Vallaire’s for Men, a men’s accessories line where I make custom lapel pins, pocket squares, and bow ties. At the ripe old age of eight, I wanted a way to help my mother who was ill at the time, I told her, “focus on your health, and I will focus on the wealth!” I also wanted to address the limitations found in quality men’s accessories. Time Management is probably the most challenging thing in business- trying to manage all aspects of my life school, fun, friends, family, and my business, but I’m getting it done. Not winning all pitch competitions that I’ve entered has been what I cherish the most. I use this as a learning opportunity to grow and expand myself and business. Sitting in a room of people threeto-five times my age, sets me apart from my peers and gives me an advantage to learn things like how to conduct a beta test; complete a business model canvas; prepare value proposition a cost structure;

and understand the financial side of my business such as a balance sheet, revenue, expenses, income, sales forecast, budget and cost flow analysis, return on investments, etc. > What did you want to be when you grew up? I want to be in the entertainment industry because I like making my imaginations come to life through acting, producing, and even singing. I see myself as a multi-billion-dollar business mogul and world-renowned actor.What do you do in your free time?

I watch YouTube videos on just about any and everything like cooking channels, researching animals, listening to motivational speakers, and learning more about investing, just to name a few. I do this because it keeps me aware of what’s going on without watching the depressing news channels. > How would you describe yourself in one word?

GOLD > What sets you apart from others who are doing the same thing? I am dressing men to impress for there right success instead of like others just providing clothes. It’s important the I use my platform to provide young men with the proper tools that will position them for success early in life. Actually, I have two: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” and “When you work hard, you play hard.” I learned the later one from my father, it helps me stay balanced. > If you could offer one piece of advice to someone wanting to follow your path, what would it be?

Everyone has a story about why they started, what’s your’s? My interest in massage therapy started in my early twenties when I was experiencing a lot of insomnia, tension, and muscular pain from working a very stressful desk job. I didn't want to rely on pain or sleep medicine and a one hour session with my Therapist gave me tremendous relief. When I decided to leave my corporate job I took a chance on going to massage school and had great satisfaction in my work until my health became poor in 2017. In April of that year I was 233lbs and I suffered daily from chronic pain, fatigue, and high blood pressure which threatened to end my career. As a result, I embarked on a journey of self-care which involved learning to take care of myself holistically, changing the way I ate and taking up weightlifting. I've lost around 80lbs and I no longer have any health issues. I workout around 5-6 days a week, do hot yoga, and run my business Divine Body which I was inspired to start from my personal experiences with health and self-care issues. I wanted to create a company that would cater to individuals like myself, who need relief from chronic health issues and want natural solutions to help them achieve their best quality of life.

With holistic therapies and self-care education I hope to inspire people to take control over their health and change the way they feel.

What do you specialize in, what are you most known for? Holistic Massage and Pain Relief Being in business can be hard and difficult sometimes, what keeps you motivated? I'm motivated by my desire to help people, my passion for living a life of purpose, and my goal of being one of the top experts & entrepreneurs in my field.

What has been the hardest thing about being in business? It has been hard learning to trust the process of creating and running a business, accept that I'm not in control of everything, and that I can't always prevent setbacks. As an entrepreneur sometimes you make a decision for your company and things don't work out exactly as you'd hoped. The top business owners anticipate contingencies and work through them because they can see the bigger picture of what their ultimate goal 30

What are the failures that you most cherish?

I tried to start a massage business some years ago and because I wasn't prepared I failed miserably. Although it was a hard experience, I'm glad that I went through it because it made me realize how hard I was going to have to work if I wanted to succeed as an entrepreneur. Before that I had only heard about the challenges of working for myself but after I'd experienced actually doing it, it strengthened my resolve to be more strategic about how I chose to build my business the

second time around.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

OB/Gyn What do you do in your free time? I spend as much quality time with my friends and family as I can in my free time. I also enjoy weightlifting, hot yoga, cooking, reading, writing, doing anything outside, and trying new places to eat (I'm a huge foodie).

How would you describe yourself in one word? Driven What sets you apart from others who are doing the same thing? I'm different from a lot of practitioners in my field because of my empathy for how my clients feel. I know what it's like to suffer from chronic health problems and I understand the challenges

of wanting to have a better quality of life but not knowing how to go about achieving that and knowing who to trust. When they talk to me about their challenges they know I "get it" and I'll do everything within my scope of practice to get them the answers and relief they need.

What is a philosophy or quote that you live by? No one cares about how much you know until they know how much you care.

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone wanting to follow your path, what would it be? Don't stop or slow down just because things get hard on your journey. My dad has always told me, "Nothing beats a failure but a try", and it's so true. I've had many moments when I've wanted to quit and felt like I was making a big mistake by starting a business on my own. I'm so grateful that I didn't give up and that I choose to move forward everyday and try harder than I did the day before.

Everyday is an opportunity to get better and get a little closer to your dream so keep going.

What can we look forward to from you in the upcoming year? 2020 is going to be an exciting year of growth and transformation for Divine Body! I will be expanding my services to include new holistic therapies and massage modalities. He is a serial entrepreneur having founded multiple businesses throughout his career with his current focus being the founding partner and the CEO of Sterling Staffing Solutions, as well as the Founder of White Orchid Hospice.

Stephen serves as CEO of White Orchid Hospice, LLC, a palliative and hospice care agency serving patients in the greater Houston, Texas area. His vision for hospice care came from his childhood memories of watching his father go through a painful demise with only the care of his loving sister.

He also witnessed the pain and

sorrow caused by the death of soldiers while fighting in Iraq. Finally, he has found a way to make a difference and honor the memory of those that he has witnessed suffer so deeply in his past.

Stephen is active in his community mentoring young boys age 7-17 through 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston Inc, Fort Bend Boys and Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Society of Human Resources Management, Project Management Institute Houston, American Management Association and Toastmasters International. He also serves on the boards of the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, the Better Business Bureau’s Nominating Committee and Delta Academic Artistic and Philanthropic Foundation (DAAP) 2018-2019.

r. Sterling Carter is a leader in his field and strives to promote innovation in the healthcare community. He has always been a driven leader, and authority in his field. He has over twenty years of experience working as a professional physical therapist and is a decorated U.S. Army veteran who served his country for over two and a half decades, earning the rank of Major before retiring.

Dr. Carter served as a proud protector of his country for more than 25 years. He worked as a physical therapist, and also served in Operation Desert Storm (90-91) and Operation Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom (06-07). Major Carter served in various leadership roles, to include Executive Officer of an Army Hospital unit in which he was responsible for the management and well-being of 350 soldiers. Major Carter has received multiple awards to include: Two Army Commendation Medals, Two Army Achievement Metals, Saudi Arabia Service Medal recipient, Combat Medic badge recipient, and a graduate of Commanders and General’s staff college.

Dr. Carter has extensive education, training, and experience in the healthcare arena practicing as a professional physical therapist for more than 20 years. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Langston University and went on to complete his Master of Science in Physical Therapy with a focus in Orthopedics at Texas Woman’s University. He now holds a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Sim-

mons College. In addition, to his higher education, Dr. Carter is a graduate of the esteemed Fort Bend Leadership Forum and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

As a successful serial entrepreneur, Dr. Carter has held countless leadership positions throughout his career. In an effort to change healthcare by providing unparalleled value for his patients, he has founded several businesses. He is currently the President and CEO of Sterling Physical Therapy & Wellness and a founding partner and CEO at Sterling Staffing Solutions. His past business ventures include Sterling Energy Solutions, Sterling Security Group, and Sterling Strategic Counsel, among others.

Considered an expert in the Physical Therapy profession, Dr. Carter has written over 50 different blogs, and shares a wealth of educational material on the Sterling Physical Therapy YouTube channel, where he reaches thousands of viewers daily. Dr. Carter also produces educational videos, teaches continuing education courses, and serves as a contributing author for numerous journals and publications.

Today, Dr. Carter frequently treats patients, and is frequently sought out by satellite television network, TLC. It is here that Dr. Carter can also be seen worldwide, as he continues to share his life-saving message of health on TLC’s hit TV show “My 600-lb Life.” While TLC follows medical journeys of morbidly obese people — each weighing more than 600 pounds, Dr. Carter uses his

knowledge and expertise, while helping patients drastically change their appearances and reclaim their independence.

An advocate of mentorship and philanthropy, Dr. Carter is a member of the 100 Black Men of America, Houston Metropolitan chapter and mentors young males throughout the community. He is also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Prince Hall Affiliated Free & Ancient Mason, and a Life Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoys mentoring students who are interested in Physical Therapy as well, and provides opportunities through the Sterling Physical Therapy, college volunteer program. Dr. Carter also sponsors several community-based sports teams and non-profit organizations. Dr. Carter and his brother created a program known as Sterling C.A.R.E.S. , where their staff gives back to those in need within the community. Dr. Carter also served as the 2017 Chairman of the Fort Bend County Chamber of Commerce, the Healthcare Division committee chair (2014-2016), and currently serves on the Board of Directors.

He also serves on the Board of Directors for St. Michael’s Learning Academy and the Fort Bend Education Foundation.

When not working, Dr. Carter enjoys traveling and spending time with his family. He is happily married to his wife Crystal Carter, and they are the proud parents to their son, Garry.

Hospice care is a patient and family-centered approach that includes, at a minimum, a team of doctors, nurses, home health aides, social workers, chaplains, counselors, and trained volunteers. They work together focusing on the dying patient’s needs whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. The goal is to help keep the patient as pain-free as possible, with loved ones nearby. The hospice team develops a care plan that meets each person’s individual needs for pain management and symp-

tom control.

The team usually consists of: Clergy or other counselors; Home health aides; Hospice physician (or medical director); Nurses; Social workers; Trained volunteers; Speech, physical, and occupational therapists, if needed; The person’s personal physician may also be included.

It is important to find out what the role of the patient’s primary doctor will be once the patient begins receiving hospice care.

Most often, a person can choose to have his/her personal doctor involved in the medical care. Both the physician and the hospice medical director may work together to coordinate the patient’s medical care, especially when symptoms are difficult to manage. Regardless, a physician’s involvement is important to ensure quality hospice care. The hospice medical director is also available to answer questions the patient or loved ones may have regarding hospice medical care.

In many cases, family members or loved ones are the patient’s primary care givers.

As a relationship with the hospice begins, hospice staff will want to know how best to support the person and family during this time.

Among its major responsibilities, the interdisciplinary hospice team: Manages the patient’s pain and symptoms; Provides emotional support; Provides needed medications, medical supplies, and equipment; Coaches loved ones on how to care for the patient; Delivers special services like speech and physical therapy when needed; Makes short-term inpatient care available when pain or symptoms become too difficult to manage at home, or the caregiver needs respite time; and

Provides grief support to surviving loved ones and friends.

Support can include conversations with the person and family members, teaching caregiving skills, prayer, telephone calls to loved ones, including family members who live at a distance and companionship and help from volunteers.

Counseling or grief support for the patient and loved ones are an important part of hospice care. After the person’s death, bereavement support is offered to families for at least one year. These services can take a variety of forms, including telephone calls, visits, written materials about grieving, and support groups. Individual counseling may be offered by the hospice or the hospice may make a referral to a community resource.

Palliative care is patient and family-centered care that optimizes quality of life by anticipating, preventing, and treating suffering.

Care is provided and services are coordinated by an interdisciplinary team; Patients, families, palliative and non-palliative health care providers collaborate and communicate about care needs; Services are available concurrently with or independent of curative or life-prolonging care; Patient and family hopes for peace and dignity are supported throughout the course of illness, during the dying process, and after death.

Everyone has a story about why they started, what’s your’s? My journey all began as a part-time job to help take care of my family. The big push started when a job I gave 19 plus years too started dictating to me when I could, or couldn't take off to take care of my sick child, and I was feeling more guilty for not going to work rather than focusing 100% on my child. I had already started transitioning everything to leave that job within the next three years. However God had other plans for me and I must say that qutting was the best decision I have every made in my life. I don't regret anything in my past, but I do look forward to my upcoming future.

Malcolm Carter is an American Actor, Writer, Director & Editor from Texas. He was born and raised in Houston, TX, where he attended Barbara Jordan High School for Careers for the audio/visual production for filmmaking in 2012-2015. He has attended Texas Southern University, majoring in Communication: Radio-Television-Film. Malcolm started off making short films in high school such as Retribution and The Dance Off. What has been the hardest thing about being in business?

Finding dedicated people that are willing to go all in. I have dealt with some challenges in my first 5 year experience with individuals who just want it all for themselves. I believe in growing together as a family. I want to see others make it, but we can't share a dream when others are steadying trying to attack for a throne they aren't prepared for.

What are the failures that you most cherish? Not having the perfect project. I am still learning every day about this industry. Every project released from my company, I find something in need of improvement.

Whether it's directing, acting, cinematography, or etc, I will not stop until the perfect project is made.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Honestly, I am leading to be the next Tyler Perry for my generation. Mr. Perry is a genius and he does not care what people will say about his next move. He goes above & beyond for his team that many don't provide in the industry, and I share the same with my team.

What do you do in your free time?

My free time involves catching up on TV series, and a few movies. I have grown to love television series so much that I have to catch up when the work is completed.

What sets you apart from others who are doing the same thing? I am a speaker and advocate for women’s health, but I am not limited to research and presentations. I have served as an inspiration to other women by running 5K races during my own pregnancy. With my Chiropractic Practice, I have also proven the necessity of alternative health care for women. My entire life is dedicated to protecting the health of women.

What can we look forward to from you in the upcoming year? I will continue to empower women and advocate for healthy pregnancies throughout 2020.

This May, we will host our annual 5K Mamas Fun Run, which boasted 100s of participants in 2019, including pregnant mothers, fathers and children. Also, we will host a National Fit Pregnancy Week from May 3rd- May 10th, 2020, which will various events and workshops to promote healthy lifestyles for expecting mothers.

What has been the hardest thing about being in business? I’m sure that I’ve experienced the same woes of other business owners, but I focus on the many successes I’ve experienced.

What are the failures that you most cherish? The failures I cherish the most are the financial failures because those have taught me the most. I am more appreciative understanding of the dollar. When I was 19, I got into some BAD real estate investments and they literally bankrupted me. Another failure I cherish is failing classes in chiropractic school; As I reflect on that time and how my practice is now thriv-

ing, it makes me more appreciative of the struggle.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I want to be a kind of superhero for women! It is my life’s purpose to use my personal passion and expertise for the benefit of women.

What do you do in your free time? I am a devoted wife and mother. When I am not with my family, I am working toward more training and certifications to benefit the health of women. I have my BS in Kinesiology and Health Promotion from Michigan State, Doctorate in Chiroractic Medicine from Texas Chiropractic College, Bachelor's in Nursing from UT Arlington, pursing Master's of Science in Nursing with an emphasis on Family Nurse Practitioner.

What has been the hardest thing about being in business? The biggest challenge I have faced in regards to being in business would be the legality side of things. Like knowing what type of entity to register as, or self employment tax, and all of those complex and confusing things. You know, when you’re a first generation business woman, a lot of things can seem foreign and complex. But I am constantly educating myself on these matters.

What are the failures that you most cherish?

I am forever grateful for all of the “bad” eyelash extension sets that I have produced, or all of the clients who were less than satisfied with their service. Those moments taught me to go back to the drawing board, figure out where I went wrong, and try again.

What can we look forward to from you in the upcoming year? In 2020, I am planning some major things! I can’t share all of the details just yet. However, I will continue teaching Eyelash Artist courses, in which I educate and certify beginner lash artists.

(Only to have to go through the same process shortly there after when she passed.) It was a horrible experience.

In both instances, we walked into the local funeral home, informed them how much money we had and they made sure we spent every red cent. Up-selling, and in some cases, requiring a service that we didn’t need or want, but we did it anyway…because they knew what was needed, right? Wrong.

>How would you describe yourself in one word? Colorful.

It would later come down to a WIG that forced the founding of Cindy’s List LLC. My granny was a very fashionable woman. She wore the best clothes, drove a newer model car and kept her hair and nails done. My granny was fly.

In her case, the funeral home was supposed to get her hair done like she liked it. We knew how much a hairstyle would cost, so when they said they’d charge $75 to complete the task, it was a no brainier. When her body arrived at the viewing, not only was her hair NOT done, but she had on a WIG. They’d charged us $75 to put on a WIG. I could have done it for $10!!

That was the camel that broke the straws back. Yes…a camel on the straws back. A straw on the camels back just doesn’t convey the magnitude of how we felt, but a camel on the straws back…that’s huge!

My story is not as traditional as it may seem. Before I graduated from high school, I was confused and lost on what I wanted to study in college. It was the second semester of my senior year in high school when I attended a college fair and the University of Houston Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management was there to talk about their program.

Although, I attended high school in the Third Ward area directly across the street from the University of Houston, at the time I was unfamiliar with what both the school and the program had to offer. I was immediately intrigued by the hospitality program and that was the only school I applied to. I was accepted and that moment started my training and experience.

While there, my concentration was event planning and catering.

I learned so much about the industry and was able to intern with top companies such as the Hilton, Landry’s Corporation in Galveston, Aramark where I lived in Alaska for a summer, and Music World Properties where I grew from intern to event manager and lastly Chic Soiree Events as an intern.

Although I interned, I also worked for Pappas restaurants and City Kitchen Catering for 5+ years where I gained true customer service experience. These were the jobs that taught me the most about treating guests and clients with the utmost respect when it comes to owning and operating a business. I knew that I wanted to eventually own a business someday, but was unsure of what exactly it would be.

Upon graduating in 2014 and not receiving a job offer, that motivated me to start my own business K. Benai Events. > Being in business can be hard and difficult sometimes, what keeps you motivated?

What keeps me motivated is seeing my dream fulfilled. My family instilled entrepreneurship within my sister and I at an early age, ensuring that we attain multiple streams of income and I hope to make them proud. My goal is to open a bed & breakfast or boutique hotel within my community. I know that this is something that I will have to work extremely hard to attain so I currently seek several resources that will support me in achieving this goal. > What can we look forward to from you in the upcoming year? Within the next year, I plan to participate in more pitch competitions as well as plan and/or assist with several events. I was recently accepted to participate in the She Has A Deal hotel investment pitch program and am extremely happy to be involved. Currently, I have six events scheduled for next year including two weddings, 1 gala and 3 intimate dinner parties. > What has been the hardest thing about being in business? Personally, the most challenging part of being in business has been comparing myself to others within the industry and understanding to never take business matters personally. Often times, I look to social

media for validation when in actuality I should know my worth as well as know that people only show you what they want you to see. It is easier said than done, so I try to limit my time on social media and also consider what others would like to see versus how I feel at a certain moment. It is hard to not get emotional or become sensitive when you're not getting enough bookings or clientele as you think you should, but that uncertainty is what makes the strongest entrepreneurs. > What are the failures that you most cherish? There are so many things I wish I would've done better had I known the things I know now. Many times I have applied for opportunities and jobs that I believed I really wanted. However, not receiving those opportunities opened up many more for me and taught me that everything will not be handed to me.

Most things I will have to work hard for and some things are just meant for me and no one else. I cherish these failures the most because they help me to continuously improve for whatever better is coming. > What did you want to be when you growed up? I remember at an early age I thought I wanted to be a lawyer, then in middle school a doctor and by high school I had my mind made that I wanted to be a forensic psychologist because I love True Crime Shows.

Deep down I knew that I really wanted to work for myself while doing something creative within my community, I just didn't know how I was going to get there. > What do you do in your free time?

I love to read, but never really have time to do it so I am hoping to get more reading done in 2020. I also love to spend time with my family and catch up on my favorite television shows. > How would you describe yourself in one word? Focused > What sets you apart from others who are doing the same thing? My determination and experience is what sets me apart. Attending the University of Houston Hilton College was a huge advantage in my career as well as attaining my Masters of Business Administration Degree from Howard University. What do you specialize in, what are you most known for?

I specialize in all hair textures of barbering, I have almost 20 yrs of experience in hair cutting. I have experience with using clippers, shears and razor. I have the ability to cut men, women and children.

I’m also known for beard Maintenence and my special all natural beard butter and oil that I make and sell inside my shop. I offer manicures, pedicures, and facials for men.

Everyone has a story about why they started, what’s your’s?

It all start from me taking the cosmetology program in high school.

When I graduated from high school I graduated with a cosmetology license. I worked as stylist for many years while mostly cutting men and women. I soon realized that I didn’t care too much for the women styling part of the profession but I loved only cutting especially men. Through the years I focused on mainly expanding my hair cutting techniques. And then eventually decided to obtain my barbers license so I could be able to use a straight razor in my services. I started barber school in 2013. One of my clients would always tell me how good I would do as a barber and what good gift I had. He saw something special in me as a barber and blessed me by sponsoring me and paying my tuition for Barber school at Acres Home barber College.

Since I already had a cosmetology license I had to complete 300 extra hours required by the state of Texas for barber school. I completed my hours and took the state test. I past with flying colors on December 14, 2015. This was one of the greatest accomplishments that I am most proud of.

Being in business can be hard and difficult sometimes, what keeps you motivated? What keeps me motivated are my friends and family that believe in my craft. I love what I do but sometimes it can get hard. When I want to give up I always have them there to motivate and push me, telling me to keep going. My family and friends believe in me so much. When I say friends I am speaking of my clients as well, because I develop a relationship with all my clients. They push me push to keep going.

What has been the hardest thing about being in business? Trying not to get too comfortable. Staying consistent with promoting my brand.

What are the failures that you most cherish? The failures that I
