Hello & Welcome!
For some, this may be your frst real impression of me and therefore of The Avion, and possibly even Embry-Riddle or the Student Government Association (SGA). For others, you may already know me and might have skipped this section in favor of looking at cool pictures. No matter who you are, what walk of life you may come from, or the direction you’re heading toward, trust me when I say that I have felt alone before. For me, college is where I truly began to blossom. In my typical fashion, I am writing all of this while I am on the plane going back home for a month, knowing the world of Embry-Riddle will be back beneath my feet before I know it. Also, knowing that I am about to begin my second year here at the University truly excites me.
Now you may be wondering, “Clay, what exactly are you going to tell me that I don’t already know?!” If you read our inaugural Summer 2024 issue, you may have noticed a few changes, and you will notice quite a few in this issue. If I can guarantee one thing, it’s this: The Avion has changed. We haven’t just changed hands, but we’ve changed our mission. And, as someone who has felt unheard before, believe me when I say that it is my #1 mission to change that. Thus, let The Avion, and by extension, the SGA, serve as your voice. Let us be the ones to hear you out and actually listen to what you have to say. Let us help and be the representation of the larger Student Body. Whether it is now or in the future that you are contemplating changing your major, had a bad run in with your roommate, feeling like Aerospace Engineering is trying to make you sufer unconditionally, or like there is just nowhere left to turn, let us help point you in the right direction.
After all, Dean Hall gave me similar advice last year. I thought that since I was at college, I would have to fgure everything on my own, that I should fght the good fght. I know some of you may feel the same way. However, sometimes all it takes is a reminder of why you are really here, or that little push to do the next right thing. Sometimes, that means hearing the cold hard truth, even if it hurts. Oftentimes, it is just a reminder that you aren’t as alone as you may think. So let me say this, soak in the college experience, bathe in the dangerously hot Florida sun, cool of in the refreshing Mori Hosseini Student Union, relax, study, do your thing, and seize the day. The Avion will be here to remind you of that upcoming event you forgot about, or to show you some cool pictures from the Coke 400, or to just tell you some cool random thing that Embry-Riddle is doing. We’re here, and more importantly, we’re here to hear you out. Instead of saying something sappy, I’ll just leave you with this, enjoy your fight, don’t forget to leave your tray table up, and your seat back in its upright position, because you are cleared for landing at Embry-Riddle. The local time is Eastern Standard. And on behalf of this Division of the SGA, welcome home.
Enjoy the journey,
Clayton Loughary Editor-in-Chief, The Avion

We’ve all been there before: that daunted freshman walking the halls of Embry-Riddle, intimidated by all the courses, labs, and fights that our next four, or even more, years have in store. It can be a scary place, but with a few tips and tricks, your time at Riddle will be a breeze!
Find help early:
Some courses can become overwhelming quickly, and it can often seem like you can’t do anything to get caught up. You want to seek help before it’s too late, whether it’s a professor’s ofce hours, tutoring labs, or even a study group of new class friends; these strategies can help you fnd the help you need early to excel at your coursework.
Join extracurriculars:
With so many extracurricular organizations to ofer, EmbryRiddle has something for everyone! Whether you want to build a rocket, perform on stage, get involved with Greek life, or even write an article to be featured in a future issue of this magazine, you can do it all! These activities are where you will meet your closest friends and make memories that will last well after you walk across that stage at graduation.
Explore Daytona:
Daytona is the “world’s most famous beach” for a reason: because there’s so much to do and see in Daytona and the rest of the Central Florida region. So, spend a Saturday driving around with the windows down, take a trip to the sunny beach, visit the Speedway, and even make a pit stop at Buc-ee’s. Daytona is your home for the next few years, and it will be even better once you get of campus and explore!
LETTER
You’ve made a wise decision by choosing Embry-Riddle. Refecting on my time here, I often wonder what I would say to the Orientation Week version of me from Fall 2021. Many of you are curious about what lies ahead—what friendships you’ll form, successes in classes, clubs, and more. What I can tell you now, and what I wish I had known three years ago, is to stop worrying and be confdent that this is the best choice you’ve ever made in your life. Stop stressing; enjoy the journey because this university has your back from the moment you step through its doors and throughout your professional career. Embry-Riddle does not have ordinary alumni; our top-notch alumni have made ERAU’s legacy so prestigious that it currently exceeds any other institution. This achievement is all made possible by exceptional individuals just like you.
Since the 1960s, the Student Government Association has been here to support you every step of the way. We are regular students who make it our mission to enhance your student life daily. Our outstanding free student services include 24/7 emergency medical assistance on campus, professional entertainment equipment and crew, live music for your events, and our established news and media service.
We are constantly striving to improve our services and enhance the student life experience at ERAU. As the president of this association, it’s my mission to ensure you feel supported and that you can rely on us for any campus matter. Trust is a two-way street—I ask for your trust, and you have mine in return. We wouldn’t be anything without you.
Here are some of my key strategies for success at ERAU: Don’t be a stranger, join a club, engage with your professors, always aim higher, and visit your Student Government Association.
You can fnd us on the second foor of the Mori Hosseini Student Union in the Student Leadership Suite, where you can enjoy free cofee and candy.
Together, we are a team of ONE .
Live the memories and leave a legacy to remember that inspires others to follow.

Parking Appeals Pro cess &
Frequently Asked Questions
Who makes the rules in the Campus Parking & Traffic Rules and Regulations Handbook?
The university's Parking and Traffic Committee is the governing body which creates the rules all students and faculty must follow. The Student Court has a representative who sits on this committee with university faculty and staff to bring the student perspective to the conversation.
Can I appeal my parking ticket?
Yes, if there are circumstances which you believe warrant an appeal, you can find the parking appeal form on the back of the physical ticket you received or on the Student Court page of the SGA website. Please know that you have 10 days from the day you received the ticket to submit an appeal.
Can I submit an appeal for a parking ticket I receive while located in the parking garage?
The Student Court does not process appeals for tickets acquired while in the parking garage. Campus Safety has a process in place for that, which can be found on their website via the Ernie search bar.
What happens after I submit an appeal?
After no more than 10 business days you will receive a response with a verdict given by the Chief Justice of the Student Court. If you have reason to believe that the verdict you received is unwarranted, then you may schedule to appeal the verdict to the entirety of the rest of the Student Court (7 Associate Justices). The decision made by the Associate Justices is final.
Where are the parking and traffic rules?
The Campus Parking & Traffic Rules and Regulations Handbook is located primarily in the parking decal purchasing process. After this process is complete you acknowledge that you have read and understand the rules. If you would like to reference the rules at a later time, you can find them on the Student Court page of the SGA website or the Campus Safety page (found through Ernie).
