Hurricane Milton
By: Penelope Anderson, Editor-in-Chief
Thousands of students graduate from EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University each year and those alumni are going on to do great things around the world. We recently caught up with several ERAU alumni serving communities across Florida during Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
Lovie Haley, the human services branch director for Flagler County’s Emergency Management, said, “Being an ERAU graduate provided me with valuable knowledge from my professors that I’ve applied in my career. The coursework at ERAU set me up for success after completing my degree in Homeland Security. I take pride in serving our state of Florida and Flagler County, contributing to communities that reflect the values I learned at ERAU,” said Haley.
“Community service has always been a priority for me throughout my whole life. My time at Embry-Riddle, especially as a member of the Tri Sigma sorority, allowed me to continue my commitment to service. In my current role with Flagler County Emergency Management as human services branch director and social media coordinator, I am dedicated to making a positive impact serving my community. Most recently, I have worked helping communities in need during Hurricanes Helene and Milton, including setting up shelters, organizing food deliveries, keeping people informed, and providing comfort stations to Floridians affected most.”
Freud Jeantilus and Jacob Roser, instructors for Teens-InFlight, Inc., recently piloted 700 pounds of goods and supplies to families in need in the Tampa/St. Pete area, alongside Teens-In-Flight, Inc. executive director, Ric Lehman. Both Jeantilus and Roser are graduates of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and shared how their training and experience at ERAU helped prepare them to serve others.
“Tampa’s been hit with a second hurricane in a month-anda-half’s time. It’s important for us to reach out and make sure they’re doing okay and help everybody who’s in need. I think it goes to show that it’s all about camaraderie and helping your fellow man, and I think it’s a good opportunity to do it here,” said Jeantilus.
“I’m just as excited to get involved with this. I studied meteorology in school. I find weather fascinating and understanding what happened to Tampa and how they’ve
As a nonprofit flight school providing private pilot lessons to the families of fallen military and first responders, providing support during a natural disaster comes second nature for the organization’s team members.
“I think it’s important not to just learn skills but to learn how to use them in a way that helps benefit other people, and that’s what these flights are all about,” said Lehman. “Take the skills that we’ve learned, take the talents, take the opportunity then to help someone else.”
Not the only ERAU alumni with boots on the ground during the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, members of the 125th National Air Guard were activated on a ‘pod mission’ providing essentials such as meals, water, and tarps for families in rural Flagler County whose homes were without water or power after the storm.
Among them is MSgt Brendan Gelb, an ERAU Worldwide assistant professor teaching aviation maintenance.
“It’s been a pleasure to be able to help the community and reach out. We’ve been on the ground for four days, working about nine hours a day to hand out the deliverables to the community. I’ve been in the 125th out of Jacksonville for 10 years and with the military for 16 years in total. We wear an American flag on our sleeve because we’ll do just about anything for this country, and one of our core values is service before self,” said MSgt Brendan Gelb.
ERAU Daytona graduate Tech. Sgt Ryan Holovich flies for Delta Air Lines out of Atlanta but appreciated the opportunity to return to Central Florida.
“I was active duty, so it was my post-9/11 GI Bill [that] I was able to go to school full time, [get my] aeronautics degree, flew while I was there and I was able to learn all the great connections I have to get a job at Delta Air Lines, then start my full-time civilian career there but at the same time while I was at school and worked for Delta, I continued to serve in the Florida Air National Guard. So, while I’m continuing on serving my nation while I was active duty but now, I can do it part-time and still serve the community I grew up in [sic],” said Holowich.
“It’s great. I know all these people here. I see my friends who have been affected and actually do something impactful for my community that I lived in and served. It’s a great feeling.”
Students gathered in costume and got in the spooky spirit on Friday, Oct. 25, for the annual Halloween Spooktacular in the Student Union.
The Spooktacular, organized by Student Engagement & Student Union (SESU) as a part of their weekly Skyline Social events, featured many activities for all students to enjoy. There was cookie decorating, apple cider and donuts,
This event also involved the entire Student Government Association as they worked to bring a little spooky fun into the lives of every student.
This included a photo booth from The Avion, pumpkin carving and live music from The WIKD 102.5 FM, and even an arts and crafts station where students could make gnomes in domes, which Touch-NGo Productions presented. Following the event, Touch-N-Go hosted an interactive screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” for all
“The costume contest is my favorite part,” said Joaquim Loraschi, who was dressed as the viral lime green
Loraschi shared a sentiment that most students had going into this event: to dress up! From the Lorax and pirates to Star Wars Jedi, Cars, and S’mores, students from every walk of life on campus came together to compete in the Halloween
This action-packed contest featured stunts and catwalks as students competed to determine which costumes embodied the most Halloween spirit, eventually leading to the crowning of over half a dozen students in different categories.
“Don’t be afraid to wear a costume,” said Britton, who was dressed as The Scarlet Witch from the Marvel franchise. “If you feel like you’re going to be the only one wearing a costume, that’s not true.”
The Halloween Spooktacular lived up to its name, giving students a spooky night to celebrate Halloween. Most importantly, it gave students here at Embry-Riddle a chance to come together and build a community for all to celebrate in their own way.
“Everyone who is here is just wanting to have fun and get free food and carve pumpkins,” added Britton. “And we’ll be here the same day next year: last Friday in October!”

THE AVION ASKS... What’s your favorite thing about Embry-Riddle?
With Open House, Homecoming, and Family Weekend on the way, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Daytona Beach campus is buzzing with excitement. It’s the time of the year when we see a lot of prospective students, families of current students, and alumni visit the campus, celebrating school pride and reflecting on what makes this university so special. The air is filled with memories, nostalgia, and a lot of oohs and ahhs, and it’s just an exciting and action-packed time all around.
Embry-Riddle offers more than just an academic experience. For some, it’s the thrill of taking flight for the first time or cheering at their first college athletics game. For others, it’s the vibrant community—clubs, organizations, and friends who have become like family. From the late-night study sessions to the breathtaking views around campus, everyone has something they cherish about their time here.
To celebrate the spirit of EmbryRiddle, I asked students a simple question: “What is your favorite thing about Embry-Riddle?” Their responses capture the essence of what makes ERAU such an inspiring and memorable place. So, as we gear up for the second half of the semester, take a moment to hear from a few Eagles about the things that hold a special place in their hearts.

Besides all of the amazing professors and opportunities here on campus, the location of Embry-Riddle is second to none. Being this close to the space coast to go see launches and explore KSC, to going to see the Rolex 24 or Daytona 500 right in your backyard, to being right next to the beach, you really can’t beat the location here!
Definitely the people. You know, with the right people, you go out, you socialize, you fit right in, and you’ll be surrounded by people who are not only passionate about the same things as you, but also share the same interests. The campus life and people are just awesome.
TESHOME TESHOME
Senior, Aerospace Engineering
My favorite thing about ERAU is that there is a community designated to aviation, and once you come to campus, you realize that you’re not the odd person out who only likes airplanes and rockets. There’s a whole community interested in these topics.
My favorite thing about Embry-Riddle definitely has to be the people. I know it’s cliche to say, but I genuinely feel like I’ve found a family here at Embry-Riddle. Throughout the tough classes and the hard times, the people I’ve met have helped me throughout the journey. They have helped me grow technically, professionally, academically, and most importantly, as a person.
My favorite thing about Embry-Riddle is the people. There are just so many different kinds of people from different places, cultures, and backgrounds. The diversity is amazing here.
LILIANNA RICHARDS
Sophomore, Homeland Security and Intelligence
Senior, Air Traffic Management
My favorite thing is the atmosphere and how everyone fits in. No one really tends to feel left out—it’s a great feeling.
Embry-Riddle is like a box of chocolates. Every day you come to class or campus, and you never know what you’re going to get. You never know what you’re going to see or who you’ll meet. You might see someone wipe out on a skateboard, you might see another Red Bull event happening, or you might see Ernie the Eagle handing out high-fives. Every day is an adventure.
