A Summer of Innovations and Competitions
By: Makenna Wine ⁄ Correspondent Design: Mikyla Berish ⁄ Staff
When some see that Embry-Riddle has a submarine club, they are skeptical about the success and transferability of knowledge to aerospace engineering. However, although the Autonomous Maritime Robotics Association (AMRA) focuses on underwater systems because the environment can mimic zero-gravity situations, aerospace engineering students can gain an understanding of these concepts to have direct experience in the engineering field that can correlate to their discipline before they enter the workforce.
AMRA is open to all undergraduate students regardless of their major. They specialize in developing and improving two competition-worthy submarines in two different projects students can join: MATE ROV and RoboSub. Each of these projects offers unique skills that students can learn from to supplement their schoolwork in preparation for their careers.
The first competition of the summer, the MATE ROV World Championship, was held on June 20-22 in Tennessee. MATE ROV stands for Marine Advanced Technology Education [of] Remote Operated Vehicles. In this case, the submarine is controlled remotely by a team above the water. This project focuses heavily on mechanical engineering components instead of the greater focus on software and electrical engineering for RoboSub.
This year, AMRA’s MATE ROV team, Wave Co, competed at the second-highest difficulty level the competition offers. This was their very first year competing in the competition, and despite running into and fixing electrical failures, they placed eighth out of thirteen and had higher scores than those who placed above
them in five out of eight categories.
In contrast, RoboSub is an international competition that tests teams to design and build a completely autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). Signals are sent from a ground station through a tether to send information back and forth to the sub. Sensors are utilized to gain information about the sub’s surrounding environment, which sends data back to the ground station. Based on the environmental readings, the sub will orient itself to complete tasks. The ground station team, based on readings, can activate certain parts of the sub through commands, and the sub would respond.
During the competition, which took place Aug. 5-11 in California, Team Unsinkable, AMRA’s RoboSub team, did not end up qualifying and placed 30th of 41 teams. There are many scores considered for this competition, such as website design, a team video, technical presentation and paper, and more. However, due to several delays, the submarine was not able to be assembled until after most members had returned home for the summer. Because of this, the sub was assembled in a couple of weeks by executive board members and could not be tested before the competition.
Nate George, the RoboSub Electrical Systems lead, reflects on competition, saying, “I stayed on the technical side of ‘comp’ the whole time, so I saw a lot of cooperation between myself [and other members] to make the sub work physically…As far as something I would change, I would have spent more time thinking about what could go wrong because a lot of…stuff failed… For us to succeed next year, we need to do a lot of
test days in the pool to polish the code.”
Other members, such as Kevin Kornbau, RoboSub’s new project lead, says that he is proud of what the team did this year, elaborating, “I am very proud of what we did, despite not qualifying. At the end of the day, the experience in building the sub and getting it into the pool mattered, not qualifying. That said, I think we learned many lessons that we can apply to next year’s competition.”
If anyone is interested in attending meetings, general meetings are on Friday nights at 6 p.m. in Lehman Building Room 367. It does not matter how much or how little experience or knowledge someone has; all they look for is someone with a willingness to work together and learn. Kellan Shew, AMRA’s chief of support and a RoboSub software member says, “Anyone who has the motivation to learn is welcome here. There are so many things you can do here at AMRA be it software, mechanical, or electrical. If those are not to your tastes, but you still wish to come here and help out, we have a support branch as well as an upand-coming research team. We are also making a lot of changes to AMRA 101, the curriculum we use to teach our new members. Seeing how it differs compared to my time as a freshman will be really interesting. AMRA is like another home far from home to me! My favorite part is the people; the community we have here at AMRA is very welcoming. Coming to the new members meeting [during] my first semester here was the best decision for me. Being someone with little to no experience yet being able to learn so many things…that I only would have discovered if I was in AMRA.”
