INTRODUCTION A very warm welcome to SICK! Festival 2017, which takes place in venues across the wonderful cities of Manchester and Salford. SICK! Festival celebrates life, death and survival, exploring subjects that are hugely important to all of us, however difficult they may be. The challenges we face in our daily lives are about the people we are and the society we live in. This year, the festival programme takes particular account of our relationships with the communities around us. It explores how we construct our identities through our choices, hopes and actions, and how for better or worse, we are shaped by the world we live in.
DUTCH PERFORMING ARTS SHOWCASE In partnership with Dutch Performing Arts, SICK! Festival presents a showcase of six new works by some of the most outstanding artists from The Netherlands. Together they place Dutch work at the forefront of contemporary performance practices and investigations into the nature of European identity at a time of dramatic change and uncertainty. We are delighted to be working with HOME to present De Man in Europe by Lucas de Man, Fractured Memory by Ogutu Muraya, Lolling and Rolling by Jaha Koo, Hello Hollow by Julian Hetzel, Help by Anoek Nuyens and Talking About You For Hours by Noah Voelker.
The programme presents artists and speakers whose work combines depth and integrity with a real commitment to social agendas. We present major international artists, like Milo Rau and Berlin, alongside the most outstanding early career artists, including local artists Afreena Islam, Toni-Dee Paul and Jamil E-R Keating. We are delighted to work with Dutch Performing Arts to present a fantastic showcase of new work from the Netherlands. The festival would not be possible without the contribution of our partners Contact, The Lowry, the Whitworth, Manchester Museum and Central Library, and we are excited to be working for the first time with HOME, Manchester Art Gallery and STUN Studio. Before I die is a participatory public art project that invites people to contemplate death, reflect on life, and share their personal aspirations in public. After losing someone she loved, Chang channelled her grief and depression into this project covering a crumbling house with chalkboard paint and stencilled it with the prompt, “Before I die I want to _____.”
PUBLIC ART WORK
The project has now been created in over 70 countries, including Iraq, China, Brazil, Kazakhstan, and South Africa. Revealing the community’s longings, anxieties, joys, and struggles, it explores how public space can cultivate self-examination and empathy among neighbours and compassionately prepare us for death and grief.

It revisits their journey 12 years on, whilst simultaneously reflecting on hundreds of years of Jamaican history through memory and poetry.
Asteroid RK1 was developed with men who have slept on Manchester’s streets and the city’s Mustard Tree charity, Jamil presents a performance about outer-space and our inner-city streets. Asteroids and addictions. Meteorites and human rights. Comets in the night sky and care in the city. Whether in our own lives or the lives of those around us, dealing with the ups and downs of life, or serious mental illness, we all confront issues of mental health. We rarely have opportunities to discuss these matters openly, and mental illness still has huge stigma attached to it. Within our communities there are many who can offer profound insight into the challenges of mental health, either through personal or professional experience. Living Library – Mental Illness and Community gives you an opportunity to meet people with unique, often challenging stories, and others who work with them. Visitors to the Living Library have 15 minutes for frank, open conversation, to listen, ask questions and reflect.

The Game explores the act of buying sex and the subculture of prostitution; its rules, its language and its power structures. It is a play that’s also a real-life game, with levels and consequences.

Five men from Manchester will volunteer. They have never played The Game before. They’ve no idea what they’re about to do. They won’t be given a script. They are doing this to be part of an event – a symbolic act – that calls us all to consider, to think and to review. The Game will give audiences an insight into a world that sits uncomfortably beneath the surface of our day-to-day lives.

Daniel is a sex worker. In the solo performance Traumboy he reports on his experiences as a male prostitute. What if a theatre company set up a political party? The Estonian company NO99 did just that in 2010: Their party Unified Estonia was a fictitious and satirical project but the majority of the population thought it was a real party. In the 44 days between the first press conference and the inaugural congress (for which 7000 believers turned up!) Unified Estonia was followed by a camera team. In the documentary Ash & Money released in 2013 we see how the probably greatest performing arts event in recent European history was accomplished. In South Korea, there was a big controversy concerning children’s tongue surgery to improve English pronunciation. The surgery is known as a lingual frenectomy. Some people thought the surgery improved English pronunciation. Some parents forced their children to have the tongue operation, even though their tongue was completely normal.

How can one deal with an inherited history that is full of complexity? Weaving together literary text, video and storytelling Ogutu Muraya reimagines the congress of Afro-intellectuals, writers, artists, philosophers and theorists, at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1956, described in James Baldwin’s essay Princes and Powers. Ogutu embraces a multiplicity of perspectives, historical archive materials and personal experience. Examining the legacy of the congress, the performance shifts perspectives, seeking a new vocabulary for dealing with uncomfortable truths.

With Hello Hollow Julian Hetzel positions uncanny figures, apparently formed of detritus, within urban settings. A group of ephemeral human like sculptures hang out on benches and seats, inscrutable, powerful yet fragile. The presence of these dark and anthropomorph creatures generates an interference in the public space – the sculptures are visual obstacles threatening our own significance within the public realm. In Hetzel’s installation black plastic foil is used to creating a disturbing dialogue on the present and the absent.

The discourse of race in contemporary performance falls apart when whites try to understand black performance. This manifestolecture offers strategies for acknowledging how artists of colour and their collaborating audiences of colour operate in several keys simultaneously, but are compelled to reduce their work and experience to the unknowable, shameful category of ‘race.’ Thomas F. #negrophobia examines the erotic fear associated with the black body. Jaamil Olawale Kosoko juxtaposes interior and exterior landscapes to expose a confessional identity-mashup where visual and performance aesthetics collide in a face-off of self-revelation, ecstatic theatricality, and discomfort. Revealing contradictory feelings of desire and fear, #negrophobia references issues related to grief, misogyny, trans identity, and Black patriarchal constructs of masculinity housed within the chaotic frame of a body and mind on the verge of psychosomatic collapse.
Lucas De Man travelled to 17 cities in 8 countries, interviewing more than 20 creative people trying to shape their societies. He discovered an awakening generation, ready to fight for change. Who are these visionaries? How do they perceive our era and society? How do they see the challenges facing Europe? How do they imagine change? More importantly, what do they do about it? Will there be another generation like Erasmus, Thomas More and Luther who laid the foundations of today’s Europe? Post-show discussion with Prof. Hilary Pilkington of University of Manchester will follow the performance reflecting on the role of young people and populist politics in the future of Europe.

Due to the explosion of a reactor, the lives of the people living in and around Pripyat took a drastic turn. The people of some 90 towns and villages around the reactor were to be evacuated from their homes to never return again. Pétro and Nadia, a couple born and raised in Zvizdal, refused evacuation. They stayed put in their old village, in their own house. A ghost town. A portrait of solitude, survival, poverty, hope and of love, between two elderly people over 80 years old with all around them the colourless, scentless but omnipresent radiation. What do good works and charity mean in the 21st century? For half a century, Anoek’s great-aunt ran the charity Auxilium (Latin for Help). Since it was established in the 1960s, the foundation has provided financial support to various small-scale medical projects in Africa. Now at the age of 97, her great-aunt is passing on responsibility for the foundation to Anoek. But how to proceed? To find answers, Anoek sets off for Africa on an illuminating and challenging voyage into the heart of First World / Third World relations.
