FESTIVAL

MANCHESTER 8 – 25 MARCH 2017

INTRODUCTION A very warm welcome to SICK! Festival 2017, which takes place in venues across the wonderful cities of Manchester and Salford. SICK! Festival celebrates life, death and survival, exploring subjects that are hugely important to all of us, however difficult they may be. The challenges we face in our daily lives are about the people we are and the society we live in. This year, the festival programme takes particular account of our relationships with the communities around us. It explores how we construct our identities through our choices, hopes and actions, and how for better or worse, we are shaped by the world we live in.

DUTCH PERFORMING ARTS SHOWCASE In partnership with Dutch Performing Arts, SICK! Festival presents a showcase of six new works by some of the most outstanding artists from The Netherlands. Together they place Dutch work at the forefront of contemporary performance practices and investigations into the nature of European identity at a time of dramatic change and uncertainty. We are delighted to be working with HOME to present De Man in Europe by Lucas de Man, Fractured Memory by Ogutu Muraya, Lolling and Rolling by Jaha Koo, Hello Hollow by Julian Hetzel, Help by Anoek Nuyens and Talking About You For Hours by Noah Voelker.

The programme presents artists and speakers whose work combines depth and integrity with a real commitment to social agendas. We present major international artists, like Milo Rau and Berlin, alongside the most outstanding early career artists, including local artists Afreena Islam, Toni-Dee Paul and Jamil E-R Keating. We are delighted to work with Dutch Performing Arts to present a fantastic showcase of new work from the Netherlands. The festival would not be possible without the contribution of our partners Contact, The Lowry, the Whitworth, Manchester Museum and Central Library, and we are excited to be working for the first time with HOME, Manchester Art Gallery and STUN Studio. Supporting us in taking the programme to different neighbourhoods in the city, we also give special thanks to Longsight and Hulme Libraries, Rethink Rebuild Society and Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We hope you enjoy the festival and look forward to meeting you along your journey. Helen Medland, Artistic Director/CEO Tim Harrison, Director of Development Siobhan Harwood, Programme Manager & the SICK! Festival team

Dutch Performing Arts is a programme that promotes Dutch music, theatre and dance on the international stage. The programme is powered by the Performing Arts Fund NL. Dutch Performing Arts aims to intensify contact between Dutch makers and international presenters, increasing the interest of international presenters in Dutch performing arts and stimulating the international ambitions of Dutch institutions with global potential.

AFTERLIFE

FRENCH & MOTTERSHEAD (UK)

Before I die is a participatory public art project that invites people to contemplate death, reflect on life, and share their personal aspirations in public. After losing someone she loved, Chang channelled her grief and depression into this project covering a crumbling house with chalkboard paint and stencilled it with the prompt, “Before I die I want to _____.”

PUBLIC ART WORK

The project has now been created in over 70 countries, including Iraq, China, Brazil, Kazakhstan, and South Africa. Revealing the community’s longings, anxieties, joys, and struggles, it explores how public space can cultivate self-examination and empathy among neighbours and compassionately prepare us for death and grief.

PRESENTED AT

French & Mottershead present two pieces from their Afterlife series of immersive digital artworks that transport the listener via intimate stories to the body’s decomposition after death.

SOUND INSTALLATION

Grey Granular Fist, experienced in listening chairs in the Whitworth, imagines the body as an object – visceral and invasive – as it dries out in the gallery’s carefully controlled environment.

WED 08, 15, 22

Woodland, experienced via a smartphone app (smartphone supplied) outside in Whitworth Park, connects you deeply to your body and poetically details its slow fade into the earth over thousands of years.

THU 09, 16, 23

Both works offer a meditative and surprisingly calming self portrait of what happens to our bodies after death. www.sickfestival.com

LIVING LIBRARY

MENTAL ILLNESS AND COMMUNITY

Whether in our own lives or the lives of those around us, dealing with the ups and downs of life, or serious mental illness, we all confront issues of mental health. We rarely have opportunities to discuss these matters openly, and mental illness still has huge stigma attached to it. Within our communities there are many who can offer profound insight into the challenges of mental health, either through personal or professional experience. Living Library – Mental Illness and Community gives you an opportunity to meet people with unique, often challenging stories, and others who work with them. Visitors to the Living Library have 15 minutes for frank, open conversation, to listen, ask questions and reflect.

ON THE COUCH

BADGES CHOSEN/LABELS GIVEN

In the first of our On The Couch discussions, Ngunan Adamu asks how much are we defined by our labels. We all carry these labels of identity: Religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, disability. Some badges we choose: The bands we like, football teams we support, quite literally, the labels we wear? We struggle to define our place in the world, at times proudly claiming a particular identity, at other times distancing ourselves from an imposed label.

Slap and Tickle is a dark, ribald physical commentary on cultural mores and sexual taboos. Liz Aggiss places herself centre stage in this solo performance: a vociferously moving and disorientating display of contradictions and interpretations, on girls, ladies, women, mummys, mothers, bitches and dogs, pensioners and senior citizens. Resisting the ‘authority’ of convention and revising attitudes towards mature female visibility, Liz Aggiss navigates a feminist soup.

ILLNESS & IDENTITY

Liz Aggiss in conversation with Marcia Farquhar: Two grande dames of contemporary performance reflect on sexuality, radicalism and the representation of older women.

How do we build new stories around ourselves to accommodate our illness and mortality? Do visible illnesses effect people’s sense of identity more than invisible ones, or just differently? What role does diagnosis play? Reflecting on the performance of There is a Light: BRIGHTLIGHT by Contact Young Company, we present a discussion that considers the profound impact that illness can have on how we navigate the world, the experiences we have, the things we can do, our relationships with others and with ourselves.

The Game explores the act of buying sex and the subculture of prostitution; its rules, its language and its power structures. It is a play that’s also a real-life game, with levels and consequences.

PERFORMANCE

Five men from Manchester will volunteer. They have never played The Game before. They’ve no idea what they’re about to do. They won’t be given a script. They are doing this to be part of an event – a symbolic act – that calls us all to consider, to think and to review. We modern humans tend to see ourselves as pretty special, a cut above the other creatures. We recognise that other animals can see, hear, feel pain. What if a theatre company set up a political party? The Estonian company NO99 did just that in 2010: Their party Unified Estonia was a fictitious and satirical project but the majority of the population thought it was a real party. In the 44 days between the first press conference and the inaugural congress (for which 7000 believers turned up!) Unified Estonia was followed by a camera team. How can one deal with an inherited history that is full of complexity? Weaving together literary text, video and storytelling Ogutu Muraya reimagines the congress of Afro-intellectuals, writers, artists, philosophers and theorists, at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1956, described in James Baldwin’s essay Princes and Powers. Ogutu embraces a multiplicity of perspectives, historical archive materials and personal experience. Examining the legacy of the congress, the performance shifts perspectives, seeking a new vocabulary for dealing with uncomfortable truths.

HELLO HOLLOW

With Hello Hollow Julian Hetzel positions uncanny figures, apparently formed of detritus, within urban settings. A group of ephemeral human like sculptures hang out on benches and seats, inscrutable, powerful yet fragile. The presence of these dark and anthropomorph creatures generates an interference in the public space – the sculptures are visual obstacles threatening our own significance within the public realm. In Hetzel’s installation black plastic foil is used to creating a disturbing dialogue on the present and the absent.

#NEGROPHOBIA

JAAMIL OLAWALE KOSOKO (US)

DISCUSSION

#negrophobia examines the erotic fear associated with the black body. Jaamil Olawale Kosoko juxtaposes interior and exterior landscapes to expose a confessional identity-mashup where visual and performance aesthetics collide in a face-off of self-revelation, ecstatic theatricality, and discomfort. Revealing contradictory feelings of desire and fear, #negrophobia references issues related to grief, misogyny, trans identity, and Black patriarchal constructs of masculinity housed within the chaotic frame of a body and mind on the verge of psychosomatic collapse.

Lucas De Man travelled to 17 cities in 8 countries, interviewing more than 20 creative people trying to shape their societies. He discovered an awakening generation, ready to fight for change. Who are these visionaries? How do they perceive our era and society? How do they see the challenges facing Europe? How do they imagine change? More importantly, what do they do about it? Will there be another generation like Erasmus, Thomas More and Luther who laid the foundations of today’s Europe? Post-show discussion with Prof. Hilary Pilkington of University of Manchester will follow the performance reflecting on the role of young people and populist politics in the future of Europe.

The experiences of refugees connect our local communities to tragedies unfolding across the globe. Whilst the media and politics seem to overflow with opinions about the place of refugees in our society, opportunities for dialogue between displaced people and other members of the communities into which they arrive are rare.

LIVING LIBRARY

A REFUGEE IN MANCHESTER

Living Library – A Refugee in Manchester gives you an opportunity to meet people with unique, often challenging stories, and others who work with those communities as they arrive in the city. Visitors to the Living Library have 15 minutes to share a frank, open conversation, to listen, to ask questions and to reflect.

When are you at home? When are you at ease in a place? What if you lose that? What if you never had it?

ON THE COUCH

A SENSE OF BELONGING

Human relationships are changing fast, people move across the globe and within our cities, place-to-place and group-to-group, taking them far from their geographic and emotional homes. We think about what it means to lose our sense of belonging and how we might allow more people to feel at home. Chair: Charles Lauder (Professional Leadership Facilitator)

Due to the explosion of a reactor, the lives of the people living in and around Pripyat took a drastic turn. The people of some 90 towns and villages around the reactor were to be evacuated from their homes to never return again. Pétro and Nadia, a couple born and raised in Zvizdal, refused evacuation. They stayed put in their old village, in their own house. A ghost town. A portrait of solitude, survival, poverty, hope and of love, between two elderly people over 80 years old with all around them the colourless, scentless but omnipresent radiation. This performance is suitable for Deaf and hard of hearing. Post-show discussion with Dr. Vanessa May of University of Manchester will follow the performance on Thursday 23rd March exploring issues of ageing, home and belonging.

BERLIN (BE)

An engaging and humorous performance exposing a truth behind bodies that differ from the norm. Based on a collection of funny, sad, touching and surprising stories. ‘As disabled people, our bodies are central to how we exist in the world. They’re the way others first judge us, the subject of medical diagnosis, and usually seen as the reason that we can’t take part in society. Yet, they also carry volumes of stories about incidents, scrapes and calamities.’

Having a strong and secure sense of identity is essential to mental health for all of us. What happens when personal experience and social situations undermine that sense of identity, threaten to split us into so many different versions of ourselves or seem to cast us as outsiders in our own communities? Dr Dawn Edge of University of Manchester brings together a panel to reflect on how a sense of threatened identity presents huge challenges to people’s mental wellbeing, and how we might address some of these difficulties.

Ahilan Ratnamohan presents a powerful and explosive football-dancetheatre performance exploring the line between hope and desperation for young African footballers who migrate to Europe. Six West-African footballers invite an audience into their world of training, politics, visas and contracts. Post-show discussion with Dr. James Esson of University of Loughborough and Dr. Deborah Jump of Manchester Metropolitan University follows the performance drawing on Dr. Esson’s research into the allure of football for migrants from Africa.

DISCUSSION

The financial explosion of football coupled with the growing success of African players in Europe has led to many Africans seeing football as a way out of poverty.

What do good works and charity mean in the 21st century? For half a century, Anoek’s great-aunt ran the charity Auxilium (Latin for Help). Since it was established in the 1960s, the foundation has provided financial support to various small-scale medical projects in Africa. Now at the age of 97, her great-aunt is passing on responsibility for the foundation to Anoek. But how to proceed? To find answers, Anoek sets off for Africa on an illuminating and challenging voyage into the heart of First World / Third World relations. Post-show discussion with Prof. James Thompson of University of Manchester and In Place of War will follow the performance, reflecting on the contentious role of European aid to Africa.

In Five Easy Pieces Milo Rau worked with seven children to explore the emotional and political absurdities and bottomless pits of the adult world. It asks how children can understand the significance of narrative, empathy, loss, subjection, old age, and the horrors sometimes inflicted on them by adults. How do we react to them acting out scenes of violence or romance? What does that say about our own fears and desires? This makes for a confrontational experience.
