THE BAY LIFE MY TOWN
FAVOURITE THINGS with Sharon Jessup Favourite things about PE
The people (friendly), the beach (I’m originally from Fort Beaufort!), sport (PE just lends itself to running, swimming, etc.), shopping malls (especially Walmer Park) – big enough to get what you need, small enough to get in, get it and get out! The fact that our “peak traffic” only lasts about 30 minutes, you don’t have to drive 2 hours to get to your destination. Where is your favourite place to eat?
Right now it is La Kouzina restaurant and cocktail bar on the beach front! Excellent food, excellent service, excellent views over the ocean!
What is your favourite activity when the weather is miserable?
Miserable weather doesn’t really affect me or stop me from doing stuff. But if it is totally hectically bad and I’m lazy, I like to cuddle up on my couch and watch a good movie. What is your favourite outdoor spot in Port Elizabeth?
Definitely Hopewell Conservation – a private nature reserve about 10 – 15 minutes’ drive out of PE on Old Cape Road. They have gorgeous trails for running, mountain biking and horse riding, AND a beautiful little restaurant that operates over weekends run by one of my favourite persons, Lisa – a boot camper! When you are
at Hopewell you feel like the city is HOURS away, it is so beautiful and peaceful and tranquil, and you are sure to spot some wildlife while running there. What is your favourite shop?
Showee… I don’t do much shopping, BUT would have to say any shop that sells beautiful shoes, like Aldo in Walmer Park and previously the little shop called “Shoe Fetish”. (I have a really bad shoe fetish…) Where is your favourite coffee shop?
Any coffee shop with GREAT coffee, preferably somewhere I can do some “people watching”
ABOUT SHARON: Sharon Jessup runs Boot Camp Academy SA. When she’s not outside flipping tyres through the mud, she spends time with her son and husband.

BOOKS
Reviews by: Janine Nel MANAGER AT BARGAIN BOOKS A MAN CALLED OVE BY FREDRIK BACKMAN Here is a novel that caused a sensation across Europe. Light, sparkly and irresistible like a tall flute of champagne on a warm summers evening. The protagonist is a highly regimented man called Ove. The disgruntled ousted Chairman of the Resident’s Association, and character of a great variety of very entertaining black moods, and at arms length, his horrible tabby patchy equally bad tempered cat he refers to as “The Cat”. Ove is in the business of keeping things under control, such as can be expected of a man as disciplined as he. Since his
INCOGNITO –THE MEMOIRS OF BEN TRAVATO BY MARK VERBAAN Do you remember Ben Travato? No? Go get it! For 10 years the pseudonym kept us all imagining who he is, what he looks like, not to mention Brenda, his dutiful wife. I imagined him a plump elderly man with a kierie that he swings at all and sundry. But no! It is Mark Verbaan, rugged, half-crazed brute that never really aged beyond 23, refused to settle into normality, and managed through all this to still be alive. He comes out of the closet in this autobiography; finally drunk enough.
KP - KEVIN PIETERSEN So this is what we have all been waiting for. So many unanswered questions. Mercenary Kevin Pietersen offers us way more than a sneak peak into what and why goes on inside this man’s head as one of the world’s top cricket players, and ‘traitor’ to SA cricket. Is it as glorious and glamorous as Sachin Tendulkar’s “ Doing It my Way”? Probably not. But it is very nice to hear that our homeboy still considers himself a South African, and is honest enough to admit that he regrets kissing the England badge after doing his first 100 in South Africa. In this powerful autobiography he tells it like it is, with raw elegance. The sports arena is a dog eat dog world,

life has no real further purpose, now that his wife is dead, he plans to hang himself. But, you see, not everything in life goes according to plan, no matter how creatively devised. Not even for a man called Ove, who finds himself, truth be told and despite himself, desperately lonely and his existence pointless … So his suicide is interrupted, hilariously so, and he sets off in his uniquely painful way, to become the most darling grumpy old man you will ever encounter, the friend you’ll wish was yours. A beautiful modern story with old fashioned fairy tale values. Utterly delightful and surprising.
R280 from leading book stores. He is the man behind those incredibly audacious letters and bribes to South Africa’s rich and powerful. Satirical funny man extraordinaire! A journalist and columnist for several magazines and newspapers, he travels the world from Windhoek to Kingston Town and regularly finds himself in the most hilariously compromising situations, which of course, he always conquers bravely. The most entertaining and laugh out loud book you will read this year. Read it during your lunch break, it’s that easy, read it on the loo, read it out aloud to your spouse, just read it. You need it.

Bad politics, exit strategies, hidden agendas and greed are openly recorded, however not in a bitter spirit. He sets the record straight about Moore and lets loose on Mood Hoover Flower, relishes the feast that is the IPL, and explains why it is wonderful to be auctioned off for $1.5million. He talks candidly about family, friends and enemies. A very rational and soberly written book which has such a respectful (rare!), and positive energy that there is only admiration for KP, and that is why I will choose this one over Sachin for my hubby.

EATING OUT
Review by: Justin www.portelizabethrestaurants.co.za
Esian Chinese Restaurant, Westering If you really enjoy Chinese food, be sure to pay Esian in Westering a visit. The menu is mostly authentic Chinese, including plenty of vegetarian options that will suit any palate. We ordered the sweet and sour soup as a starter - tofu strips, dried mushroom, spring onion, bamboo strips, dried chillies and egg. It was a huge portion that could easily feed 4 and was quite spicy and very tasty.
“Authentic Chinese food to suit any palate”
COLD VEGETABLE PLATE
STIR FRIED CALAMARI
STIR FRIED PORK
SWEET & SOUR SOUP
Mains consisted of three dishes, stir fried pork, stir fried calamari and a cold dish of potato, carrot and pepper strips with finely chopped garlic. Every dish was very good and the flavours of sesame oil, soy and oyster sauce complimented each ingredient perfectly. The food did take some time to arrive, but it is evident that everything is freshly prepared as this is the style of Chinese cooking. Esian reminded me of our visit to China in December 2013, and around the PE area, it is as close as you will get to the real deal. If you are quite brave, order some Chinese rice wine to accompany your meal, but beware, it is as potent as Bruce Lee’s fist!

I was born and bred in PE, my dad, Sergio, was Italian and my mom, Jenny, was a Van Staden. Thus my brother and I were quite a mix!
This “sugo” (pasta sauce) recipe was one of them! The “sugo” came across to South Africa with my Italian grandparents Ugo and Alda Fabbri in the 1950’s. It was and still is eaten regularly by all the Fabbri’s in PE today. Our Fabbri family’s Italian roots are in Verona, an ancient city in the north of Italy, famous for the story of Romeo and Juliet. It’s all about passion, love,

Sit down with your family or friends and enjoy this special Italian classic, add some “parmigiano”, pour the wine, and feel the love!

INTERVIEW
Photographer & Traveller Donna Watson “You have to be a passionate, curious and good observer to capture the essence of a destination, isolating moments that will give someone far away a glimpse into the place you are visiting. Just taking a picture is not enough, you have to surround it with context and mystery using light, angles and composition” - DONNA WATSON Imagine going on holiday with no plans, no itinerary and only booking your first night’s accommodation in a foreign country. It’s a scary thought for most people but this is how Donna loves to travel: going wherever the moment takes her. Donna Watson worked as a press photographer during one of the most interesting times in South Africa, the transition from Apartheid to the New South Africa, and has captured many

political leaders on film. These days her work mainly involves corporate shoots, weddings, portraiture and freelance work for magazines. She studied before digital cameras and photo editing computer programs became the norm. In a time where there was no room for error. Her favourite subject is people, capturing revealing moments that would otherwise be lost in time and forgotten.
But Donna’s main passion is travel photography. The bug bit when she was 22 and travelled up Africa in a Landover, documenting her journey through the lens of her camera. Upon returning a year later, she made a pact with herself to travel somewhere new at least once a year. Asia pulls at her, draws her into its hidden worlds. She loves the culture as it is completely different to what we have here. She travels to the remotest of
THE BAY LIFE PEOPLE
places, where people are untouched by the western world and the English language. Where the only form of communication is through smiles, gesturing and body language. The people are so poor and have so little, yet are more in touch with themselves than we are. Every year Donna recharges on her travels and comes back with new ideas, which helps her to continually re-invent herself. She allows her creative side the freedom to play, discover and explore as she shoots for herself and not to a client’s specification or brief. The equilibrium of work, play and grounding for any creative person is important. This balance together with the ability to read people has developed into something I would call her “super power”, where she captures the essence of a situation and someone’s soul in a split second. Something that you most definitely cannot do in Photoshop.

HEALTHY EATING
Banting for Beginners Most of us have heard the term “Banting”; but what is it? Where did it come from, and how and why does it work? Banting or LCHF (Low Carb, High Fat) is not new and a method that has been used for 150+ years. This way of eating was first done by a morbidly obese undertaker called William Banting. He lost a huge amount of weight and was the “father” of this way of eating, now affectionately referred to as “Banting”. Now, modern science backs it up with proof that it works. A number of recent high-quality scientific studies shows that Banting makes it easier both to lose weight and to control your blood sugar. And that’s just the beginning. There is no weighing your food, no calorie counting, no bizarre “meal replacements,” no pills and no magic weight loss potions. A Banting diet means you cut out or eat less carbohydrates and a higher proportion of fat with a normal portion of protein. Most importantly you drastically minimize or stop your intake of sugar and starches. You can eat other delicious foods until you are satisfied – and still lose weight. There are solid scientific reasons why Banting works. When you avoid sugar and starches your blood sugar stabilizes and the level of insulin, the fat storing
20 | CAZ&CREW
hormone, drops. This increases your fat burning and makes you feel more satiated.
THE BASICS: Eat all you like:
•
Nuts: Tree nuts, NOT peanuts.
•
Berries: In moderation with whipped cream.
Avoid!!! •
Sugar: Avoid sweeteners as well.
•
Starch: Bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, French fries, potato chips, porridge, muesli and so on.
•
Margarine: It has no health benefits, tastes bad and statistically linked to asthma, allergies and other inflammatory diseases.
•
Beer: Liquid bread. Full of rapidly absorbed carbs.
•
Fruit: Treat fruit as a natural form of sweets.
•
Meat: Any type, with the fat on the meat as well as the skin on the chicken. If possible try to choose organic or grass fed meat.
•
Fish and Shellfish: Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel or herring are great.
•
Eggs: Boiled, fried, omelets, etc. Preferably choose organic eggs.
•
Natural Fat, High-Fat Sauces: Use butter, cream, coconut oil and olive oil.
•
Vegetables that Grow Above Ground: Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, zucchini, eggplant, olives, spinach, mushrooms, cucumber, lettuce, avocado, onions, peppers, tomatoes, etc.
Once in a while:
Dairy products: Go for full-fat options like real butter, cream (40% fat), sour cream, double cream Greek yogurt and high-fat cheeses. Avoid flavoured, sugary and low-fat products.
Drink every day:
•
•
Alcohol: Dry wine, whisky, brandy, vodka and cocktails without sugar.
•
Dark chocolate: Above 70% cocoa, small portion.
•
Water
•
Coffee: Try it with full-fat cream
•
Tea
THE BAY LIFE HEALTH & WELLNESS
The Theory Behind Banting Humans evolved over millions of years as hunter-gatherers, without eating large amounts of carbohydrates. We ate the food available to us in nature. These foods did not include pure starch in the form of bread, pasta, rice or potatoes. We have only eaten these starchy foods for 5 000 – 10 000 years, since the development of agriculture. Just a limited adaptation of our genes takes place in such a relatively short time. With the Industrial Revolution, 100 – 200 years ago, we got factories that could manufacture large amounts of pure sugar and white flour, rapidly digested pure carbohydrates. We’ve had NO time to genetically adapt to these processed foods. In the 80s, the fear of fat gripped the Western world. Low-fat products popped up everywhere. But if you eat less fat you need to eat more carbohydrates to feel satiated. And it’s at this time in history that our disastrous epidemics of obesity and diabetes started. The most fat-phobic country in the world, America, was hit the hardest and is now the world’s most obese country. Today, it’s clear that the fear of real food with natural fat contents has been a big mistake.
What is the problem with sugar and starch? All digestible carbohydrates are broken down into simple sugars in the intestines. The sugar is then absorbed into the blood, raising the blood glucose levels. This increases the production of the hormone insulin in the pancreas, our fat storing hormone. In large amounts insulin prevents fat burning and stores surplus nutrients in the fat cells. After a while, this results in a shortage of nutrients in the blood, creating feelings of hunger and cravings for something sweet and at this point people eat again. This starts the process again: A vicious cycle leading to weight gain. On the other hand, a low intake of carbs gives you lower, more stable blood glucose, and lower amounts of insulin. This increases the release of fat from your fat stores and increases the fat burning. This usually leads to fat loss, especially around the belly in abdominally obese individuals.
Weight loss without hunger: A Banting diet makes it easier for the body to use its fat reserves, as their
release is no longer blocked by high insulin levels. This may be one reason why eating fat gives a longer feeling of satiety than carbohydrates. It’s been shown in a number of studies: When people eat all they want on a low carb diet caloric intake typically drops. So, no calorie counting or food weighing is necessary. You can forget about the calories and trust your feelings of hunger and satiety. Most people don’t need to count or weigh their food any more than they need to count their breathing. If you don´t believe it, just try for a couple of weeks and see for yourself.
Health as a bonus: No animals in nature need the assistance of nutritional expertise or calorie charts to eat. And still, as long as they eat the food they are designed to eat they stay at a normal weight and they avoid caries, diabetes and heart disease. Why would humans be an exception? In scientific studies not only is weight loss achieved on a low carb diet – the blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol profiles (HDL, LDL, triglycerides) are also improved. A calm and less bloated stomach and fewer cravings for sweet food are also common experiences. We’ve really just scratched the surface around Banting or LCHF, but hopefully this gives you some insight into this revolution, and it truly is a health revolution!

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
A serious social evil South Africa has one of the highest incidences of domestic violence in the world. by: Joanne Anthony
Domestic violence remains the most common and widespread human rights abuse in South Africa. The statistics are horrific! We just need to open the newspaper and watch television to know that women are physically assaulted, raped or murdered, humiliated, harassed, intimidated and stalked by their spouses or intimate partners, on a daily basis in their own homes. The Domestic Violence Act recognises that domestic violence is a serious social evil in our society. The victims of domestic violence are among the most vulnerable members of society. Domestic violence takes on many forms and the acts of domestic violence may be committed in a wide range of domestic relationships. PROCESS FOR GETTING A PROTECTION ORDER Step 1 – Statement under oath At the magistrates court you will be given a prescribed form by the clerk of the court to complete under oath. The clerk of the court will assist you and explain the process and remind you of your right to lay criminal charges. You must support your application with a Founding Affidavit setting out the evidence of the harassment as well as affidavits from other people who have knowledge of the harassment. Your finalised commissioned application will be submitted to the court.
to come to court together with any documentation or objects that the court regards as being essential for its decision.
Step 2A- An interim order may be granted If you believe that the perpetrator (whose identity is known to you) will attempt to avoid service of your application and if you are suffering harm or may suffer harm if an order is not granted immediately, the court has the discretion to issue an interim order. If you are granted an interim order, the order will be served on the perpetrator by the clerk of the court, a sheriff or peace officer who will be informed of a day (not less than 10 days from the date of the order) when he/she may come to court to give reasons why the interim order should not be made a final order. The perpetrator may however come to court sooner to set aside the interim order if he/she gives you and the court twenty-four hours’ notice. An interim order comes into effect as soon as it is brought to the attention of the perpetrator.
Step 2B - Service of the application (if an interim order is not granted) Once your application has been submitted to the court and the identity and whereabouts of the perpetrator has
been established, the court will direct that certified copies of your application be served on the perpetrator by the clerk of the court, a sheriff or peace officer. The perpetrator will be informed of a date when he/she may come to court and give reasons why a protection order should not be granted.
Step 3 - Issuing of a protection order and a warrant of arrest If the perpetrator does not come to court on the date specified in the notice served on him/her a protection order will be granted if the court is satisfied that there is enough evidence that harassment has occurred. If the perpetrator comes to court to oppose the issuing of the protection order a hearing will be held and the court will consider any further affidavits as well as any oral evidence and the matter will go to trial. The court will grant a protection order to you after the hearing if it finds, on a balance of probabilities, that you have been harassed or are being harassed by the person named in your application. A warrant of arrest will be issued at the same time as the protection order. The warrant can be executed if the perpetrator breaches the court order. You will be given a certified copy of the order and the original warrant of arrest. The clerk of the court will forward certified copies of the order and of the

against domestic violence. Don’t become a statistic.
If you do not know who is harassing you, the court will, at this stage, direct the police to investigate and, if the harassment has occurred electronically, direct the service provider concerned to provide details of the perpetrator. The court may at this stage or at any stage of proceedings subpoena witnesses

warrant of arrest to the police station of your choice. The protection order and the warrant remain in force for a period of five years. If the person against whom you have a protection order, contravenes that order, you may hand the warrant of arrest together with an affidavit to any member of the South African police service. If it appears to the police officer that you (or a related person) are suffering harm or may suffer imminent harm as a result of the alleged breach of the order he/ she must immediately arrest the perpetrator. If it does not appear to the police officer that you are suffering harm or that you may suffer imminent harm, the perpetrator will be handed a notice to appear in court on a charge of contravening a protection order. In considering whether or not you are suffering harm or may suffer imminent harm the police officer will take into account the risks to your safety or well-being, the seriousness
of the conduct, the length of time since the breach occurred and the nature and extent of harm that you have previously suffered as a result of the actions of the perpetrator. In addition to reporting the breach of the protection order, you may lay criminal charges if the perpetrator has committed any other crimes. A person who contravenes a protection order may be held liable on conviction to a fine or imprisonment of a period not exceeding five years. Each instance of breach of the protection order can give rise to a separate charge. If the person has committed other criminal acts in addition to breaching the protection order he or she may face additional fines or a longer period of imprisonment. It is the commitment of the SAPS to treat victims of domestic violence with sensitivity and care in terms of SAPS regulations and protocol and commitment to assist the community against acts of domestic violence.
THE SAPS’S RESPONSIBILITY IS AS FOLLOWS: •
At the scene, the SAPS must locate the complainant and take reasonable steps to protect the complainant from any further danger.

•
The SAPS will also do this if they are satisfied that the offender’s mental state, inclination towards violence and/or dependence on alcohol or drugs could influence his/her behaviour and pose a threat to anyone.

THE BAY LIFE HEALTH & WELLNESS
INTERVIEW
By: Caryn Smith
BCASA Summer Transformation Contest
Meet Kelly McIver, winner of BCASA Summer Transformation contest. The competition was open to active boot camp members only and was run over 12 weeks. Contestants had to train at least 3 times a week and follow a healthy eating plan. After 3 months Kelly lost 8.1kg, 6% body fat and 22 cm overall, which resulted in her dropping a whopping 3 dress sizes and winning the contest.
BEFORE
Kelly, 25, who still plays soccer at a local club, joined boot camp after looking for a way to help her lose the weight she had gained during her student years. She loves the fact that every boot camp lesson is different. Each day Sharon, BCASA owner and instructor, brings something new to the sessions and is always behind you, motivating and pushing you on.
There is no slacking off now that Kelly has won the contest. She says she will continue to go to boot camp as it has helped her gain self-confidence and she definitely doesn’t want to be overweight anymore.
Well done Kelly!

Man vs Horse 13/06/2015 The Man v Horse Marathon began in June 1980 following a chat over a pint (or three) in the back bar of Neuadd Arms Hotel. The then Landlord, Gordon Green overheard two men discussing the relative merits of men and horses running over mountainous terrain. The enterprising Gordon, never one to miss an opportunity to promote Llanwrtyd Wells and improve business at his hotel, decided to put it to the test. And so began Green Events and its first, longest standing and now internationally acclaimed event, The Man versus Horse Marathon. The course was changed in 1982 to provide a more even match between the man and the horse resulting year on year in very close finishes - sometimes with
the horse winning by only a few seconds. It took 25 years before a man finally beat a horse.
Bogsnorkelling Triathlon 29/08/2015 The Bog Triathlon first ran in 2005, following a demand for more dirty fun around our famous Waen Rhydd Bog. The event - the most unusual in the Triathlon calendar, starts with an 8 mile run followed by 2 lengths of the 60 yard peat bog trench and then a 12 mile mountain bike ride. The event is open to individuals and relay teams of three (one discipline each). In order to make the events accessible to a wider audience, we have introduced a “Bite Size Triathlon, ideal for junior competitors or those athletes who are perhaps not so dedicated to multidiscipline sports. This will comprise a 3 mile run, a 60yd bogsnorkel, and a 6 mile mountain bike ride. Again it is open to individual competitors or relay teams of three, and is perfect for sampling the delights of this event without the need to be a hardened athlete. This is a rare opportunity to visit one of the most remote corners of the world combined with a challenging running event. A part of the route takes place on the ice cap itself, but the main part of the course is run on the gravel road (often snow covered) that connects the inland ice with the small township of Kangerlussuaq, just north of the Polar Circle. In 2014, the half marathon and marathon were held on separate days, giving runners the opportunity to run them both and complete the Polar Bear Challenge Visit www.polar-circle-marathon.com to view these and more.

THE BAY LIFE BLAST FROM THE PAST
HISTORY
The Westbourne Oval: As I knew it during the 40’s and 50’s By: Henry Smith
During WW2, 1939 – 1945, all sporting activities came to a standstill. All active bodied young men had joined up and were in Europe dodging Nazi bullets Life in Port Elizabeth was dismal. There was total blackout’s at night. No streetlights, windows blacked out and the use of even a flashlight was verboten. Things like crockery, cutlery, sweets, cakes and cool drinks were unobtainable. You had to make do with what you had. Although the war was raging up North we were still affected as a merchant cargo ship was torpedoed in Algoa Bay in 1942. During the war the Westbourne Oval was used as a searchlight unit as well as a truck conditioning base where the cycling track was used as a test track for running in truck engines. The stands were not maintained and the wooden seating had not been varnished in over 5 years. Weeds were growing through the cement slabs on the cycle track and the grass was waist high on the running track.
30 | CAZ&CREW
Peace came at last and life slowly was restored to normal. All sporting activities resumed and because the public had been starved of local sport entertainment, they flocked to sporting events. The officials of the pre-war years got things moving and in a short time, the oval became useable. Very soon the Westbourne Oval was the playground of Port Elizabeth. Wednesday nights, general training nights, were bedlam and often resulted in injuries. Athletes practiced their various disciplines on the in-field while anything up to 30 cyclists motored around the cycling track. The first PE Grand Trophy meeting was held in November 1946. It was a sell out as sportsmen from all provinces took part. Very soon it was standing room only with the spectators lining up around the cycling track up to the tennis courts in the backstraights. In those days there were no fast food shops, so many spectators packed picnic baskets and refreshments for their day outing.
These meetings continued, creating a strong bond between athletes and cyclists, and in 1948 the Westbourne Oval hosted the SA Championships which were the national trials for the London Olympic Games. Port Elizabeth rose to the occasion and put on a great show. The days of sell-out crowds at the Westbourne Oval are now long gone, but let us not forget all the national champions and Springboks who started their careers at the oval. Long may she remain.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Henry Smith, 82, is a Springbok cyclist and World champion sprinter. He was president of the PE cycling club for 16 years during which time they became the premier club in South Africa. He has competed for 68 years and in his time he has broken every EP track record from the ¼ mile to the 25 mile.
