PUBLICATION INFO
EDITOR’S NOTE “Beware the ides of March” has forever been etched in my memory since my school days and having Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar as our English setwork book. Every March it pops into my head like a catchy advert jingle. Needless to say, I still haven’t the foggiest as to what it means. (No offence to my English teacher) Our March issue is only available online, but this hasn’t stopped us from bringing you a jam packed inspirational magazine this month. We welcome Paddy Cloete to our crew, a clinical psychologist who specialises in sports psychology. Her informative article will inspire you get out of your own way on the way to success, whether you are a sportsman or someone looking for a little life coaching.
“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” THOMAS A. EDISON
Keeping with the inspirational theme, we interview Colleen Were Durant and follow her journey from spectator to IRONMAN participant to assistant race director, as she shows us that “Anything is possible”. We sat down with Freshlyground for a casual interview before they hit the stage and discussed their collaboration with Shakira and what 2015 has in store for them. Our Banting feature was so popular that we decided to follow it up with a first-hand account on how eating the food that we were designed to eat, has improved one reader and her family’s health and wellness. March is a massive month for PE as the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championships comes to our bay. Get out there and support these courageous athletes. Hopefully their journey on the day will inspire some of you to challenge yourself to compete in next year’s event. Start today, because no matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everybody on the couch.

THE BAY LIFE MY TOWN
FAVOURITE THINGS with Bartho de Vries Always smiling and friendly, with piercing blue eyes and a radiant smile, he is the man behind the hugely successful and much loved restaurant, Blue Waters Café. Today Bartho shares with us his Favourite Things. So Bartho, what are some of your favourite things about Port Elizabeth that make you feel optimistic about it? I feel that there is a great capacity for growth in PE. We have a huge industrial infrastructure and if we work together and with the right leadership this could be harnessed to become one of the financial hubs of South Africa. I have also seen growth in our social scene, with visits from more and more well known artists and big events coming to PE. Being in the restaurant industry, I am very excited about new restaurants, craft beer bars, wine tasting rooms and the like opening all around PE. This allows people to be exposed to craft beer, new wines and trying new experiences. I am loving the growth we are seeing in the industry. Bartho, tell our readers how long you have owned this incredible restaurant? I started working at Blue Waters Café as a manager in 2005. Chris gave me an opportunity to buy 40% in 2007 and I bought him out in 2009. So this will be the 7th year of complete ownership. You are certainly one of the lucky ones with the best view in the Bay from your “office”. Blue Waters Café is a definite landmark in this beautiful city of ours,
8 | CAZ&CREW
and is certainly one of my favourite places to frequent. Do you have a favourite item on the menu and why?
and that’s always a lot of fun. We are called the PE wine lovers and the name explains it perfectly.
I must confess that I have a few favourites. I enjoy the Blue Waters Benedict for breakfast, lunch would be a Boston Steak roll or Cajun Chicken and Avo Salad (depending on the diet), supper would start with a plate of our delicious sushi followed by a Biltong and Avo Fillet or Chicken Italian. I would end my evening off with Lindt Phyllo truffles and lavazza Epresso. All of this accompanied by one of our exquisite wines.
A friend introduced me to Sunday’s river and I would like to visit there more often as well.
Sushi is a relative newcomer on the menu. Are you a huge fan and what is your sushi Favourite? I absolutely love our sushi. The biggest challenge the chef, Driaan, had was to create a menu not seen anywhere in PE and so he did. My favourites are the Berry Roses, Springbok Roses and California Heat. What is your favourite thing to do for fun? I enjoy spending time with friends, while enjoying a great glass of wine. I would make an effort to see a live music show and am always up for some dancing. I’d like to do a bit of travelling this year, local and abroad. With all these fun activities, there is also nothing better than chilling on a couch and watching a good series or movie. Once a month I join some other wine lovers for a good old blind wine tasting
What is your favourite type of music and who is your favourite band at the moment? Ouch, this is going to be one of those broad answers as I really enjoy anything. Dance, pop, rock, blues and even a bit of classical. Are you a big reader? Who is your favourite author and do you have a favourite all time book and why? I’m not a big reader, but give me a good John Grisham book and I’ll be hooked for days. It must be really hard work running such a successful restaurant. What’s your favourite way to relax after a hectic day? I enjoy a relaxing stroll along the beach. Also sitting on our balcony with good company, a good vintage and a plate of sushi. Have you travelled quite a bit in South Africa, and if so, where are some of your other favourite places to visit? I have seen most of South Africa, from Kruger to Table Mountain. I love the Western Cape with the wine farms, fun outdoor activities and great restaurants.

BOOKS
Reviews by: Janine Nel MANAGER AT BARGAIN BOOKS Children Act – Ian McEwan It sits there on the shelf… this elegant, pale, minimalistic gem, with its rubbery feel, enticing me to educate myself in its literary marvel. And so, after months of quiet argument, I lose myself in the story of a High Court judge - composed to a fault - a renegade husband, and a young poet. The protagonist, not given to emotional outbursts, is not about to let herself crack when she is confronted with her husband’s irrational passionate cravings at this late stage of their married life. But the turmoil it brings her is great, and her life takes an even more profound turn when she rules an under aged child, who is part of the Jehovah’s Witness faith,
to be the recipient of a blood transfusion, vehemently opposed by the child himself, his parents and their religion, in order to save his life. The boy is liberated, denounces his faith in favour of philosophy and begins a misdirected and desperate attempt to find the true and heightened expression to life. With the judge as his muse, he ends up lost at sea, rejected and dejected. I’m not giving the ending away, because it took me completely by surprise, suffice it to say that, like any great classical composition this one ended up tearing heart out my heart and handing it back to me on a silver platter. Exquisite.

In die oorspronklike verhaal, kom sy later ook haar tweede aanvaller tee, en ure na sy hom met die waarheid konfronteer, pleeg hy selfmoord. Wat n uitsonderlike verloop van sake! INTERVIEW
Backstage with FreshlyGround It was named the event of the week by the Weekend Post, the reviews and write ups were outstanding and it was a night that many of us will remember for months to come! As THE official after party for the one-day cricket international, it certainly was an epic night of outstanding music! Michelle Campbell Publicity and David Leverington of “Above and Beyond Productions”, who together recently held the hugely entertaining Parlotones event, once again put together an incredible evening for the music loving crowd in the Bay. Reuniting the Nelson Mandela Bay fans with Freshlyground who hadn’t performed here since 2011, both young and old danced and sang along to well known songs, around the sparkling cobalt blue pools of McArthur’s, with the alluring turquoise ocean as the magnificent backdrop for this spectacular venue. Freshlyground remains one of South Africa’s success stories. Mentioned by President Barack Obama at a speech that he was giving at the University of Cape Town as “an example of what South Africa has given the world”, the band formed in early 2002, and is made up of seven extremely talented musicians from South Africa,
12 | CAZ&CREW
Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The band’s live performances are energetic, and with their diversity and cultural sounds, bring together South Africans from all walks of life. Fronted by Port Elizabeth’s very own Zolani Mahola, who was born in Bisho and grew up in New Brighton, attending St Dominic’s Priory, the band is also made up of the rhythm section - Peter Cohen (drums) & Josh Hawks (bass) and complimented by guitarist Julio Sigauque, keyboardist Seredeal Scheepers, Simon Attwell (flute, mbira, sax and harmonica) and violinist Kyla-Rose Smith. Although hailing from diverse backgrounds, between them the band’s members weave music that is infectious, soul moving and will have you “bopping and jiving” immediately. I sat down with them at Cubana for a few minutes before they hit the stage, Zolani and the band seated comfortably, full of smiles, warm greetings and very relaxed on the comfy couches while the venue started filling up with excited fans.
Greetings everyone! Fantastic to have you back on stage here in Port Elizabeth after all these years. How does it feel? ZOLANI: For me it’s very special. I went
to school here, my family is here and I have great memories. It feels like being back home! Peter: Port Elizabeth has great memories for me. I always enjoy coming here and I always find that the crowds enjoy us.
You had a song that was the most played song in South Africa in 2005, you were the first South African musical act to receive honour from MTV, and then team up with Shakira for the official world cup anthem 2010…coupled with unbelievable ongoing success, it is certainly an honour to be sitting with you all! Let’s chat about the collaboration with Shakira! How did that happen? Peter: It’s a funny story. We had just finished recording Radio Africa. Our producer was in the states. We went to New York to mix the album. Downstairs from him was a producer that was working on a track for Shakira to pitch for the world cup. He wanted to add an African flavour and he asked us if we’d like to add a new flavor. We put something together, submitted it and
THE BAY LIFE LOCAL TALENT then heard back that she loved it and that was it! Getting to work with her and being associated with her name was cool for us.
Did this collaboration affect things for the band? Kyla-Rose: 2010 was a few years of amazing milestones. It was a big anthem and post 2010 wherever we go in the world, there is this one song that everyone knows that we were a part of. This is always an incredible thing for us. Peter: People were coming up to Zolani from all walks of society and acknowledging the song and the band. We became very treasured by the people. It was a long period of doing all the work and we thought that nothing had come of it and that it had landed in the bin. We weren’t optimistic! After hearing the news, the hardest part about it was that we were sworn to confidentiality for quite a while before we could tell anybody!
Zolani, when writing songs do you sometimes find that you are digging deep into your own soul and sharing a part of yourself with your fans? How does it feel to become that transparent? Zolani: Yes, I mainly write the lyrics. I do draw a lot from my personal experience. Yes, I am transparent and do open up but I feel that this is a good thing. That is the purpose of art and the purpose of us being on this planet. To expose yourself and to be yourself. The more you are that way, the more others can be that way too.
So tell our readers how the band formed? Peter: Some of the original band members met in a bookshop. They aren’t all with us anymore. Zolani was invited up to sing on stage and that’s how she met them and the connection was immediate. Kyla-Rose was a violinist with ‘Tumi and the Volume’ and was poached from them, and was also a great addition to the band…and the rest is history! Music connects us and we work out everything along the way. The band is like a relationship. We have fun, and we know each other well, knowing our strengths and weaknesses.
Zolani, how do you balance being a mom and being in a band? Zolani: It’s fine. It’s the same in any industry. It’s always a balancing act. In our industry we have flexibility. My son can travel with me and people are willing to assist where they can. In some ways it’s easy, in some ways difficult but it’s normal.
In a recent interview with Bay TV, Zolani also spoke about how new ideas for music come about: Zolani: We have a mix of different genres and this may be a draw card for different people. We’ve never had a real sit down with plans… We have jam sessions and that’s really how it happens. Kyla-Rose: There have been ups and downs. We are always looking for ways to reinvent ourselves, rejuvenate
ourselves and do better. We are hoping that 2015 leads to some new music which is going to come out really soon. A tour to America, a European Tour and possibly even South America.
Well our time is up and it’s nearly time for your eager fans to see you on stage! Congratulations on an incredible journey thus far, your incredible achievements and your multi platinum success with your album sales. We do hope to see you in Port Elizabeth again sometime soon and it’s been an absolute pleasure sitting down with you today! Zolani: Looking so forward to playing...it’s our first gig of the year. We look forward to starting 2015 on this great note in front of our Port Elizabeth fans! Thank you for having us! What a great experience! Well readers, if you missed this one, do not fear as Michelle Campbell and her team is hard at work to bring more music to the Bay and the Bay Life team will keep you updated! Diarize now for the 3rd of April when Dan Patlansky (globally respected premier Blues rock guitarist, singer/ songwriter) returns to Port Elizabeth, and Elvis Blue (platinum selling South African musician and songwriter) is back in Port Elizabeth on the 17th of July! Be sure to keep an eye on the Facebook page for news of future events. See you there!

EATING OUT
Review by: Justin www.portelizabethrestaurants.co.za
Something Good Roadhouse I am really enjoying a series running on DSTV called Burger Land. George Motz travels throughout America in search of the best burgers and comes across some famous styles called the Juicy Lucy, Green Chili Cheesburger and the “Viagra burger” to name a few. Locally sourced ingredients, decade old flat tops and generations of owners are what makes these burgers so great. Unchanged recipes, simplicity and the freshest ingredients give the burgers a history and a flavour that is irresistible. So I have started a bit of a quest in the PE area to find some really great hamburgers. My last expedition led me to Something Good (thanks to my wife’s recommendation) on the beachfront and I was pleasantly surprised. The premises was a renowned roadhouse in the 80’s and 90’s but stood vacant for a number of years before it was revamped and reopened. Something Good offers amazing views of the Bay when the weather is great and it was packed to capacity this past Sunday when I sampled its cuisine. I ordered the “Employees Only” burger with smokey bacon, guacamole, a fresh beef patty and spicy tomato sauce and I have to say that it was one of the best burgers I have ever eaten! Perfectly cooked with a great flavour combination of the avocado and smokiness of the grill. The food took a while to arrive, but this was due to load shedding at the time and the manager was most gracious to offer us something to make up for the wait. Great views, exceptional food and definitely a favourite hang-out on the PE beach front.

THE BAY LIFE PEOPLE
By: Nicky Volker
INTERVIEW
Take the first step...
anything is possible Colleen Were Durant’s journey from spectator to IRONMAN participant to assistant race director. It calls for the fearless… the bravest and the fiercest of mind and spirit. It’s an epic adventure that takes you into deep waters, a journey along sweeping ocean views, untouched coastlines and it’s the race of a lifetime! It is the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship South Africa and it’s all happening in the bay on March 29th!
united in their love of this incredible journey. This writer does not have to tell our Bay readers about why Nelson Mandela Bay would have been selected. Its wild beauty, beautiful beaches, amazing hotels for spectators and the multitude of other attractions have all accumulated to make us a definite favoured choice by the organizers!
As the Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency promotes our province as the adventure and endurance sport destination to a massive global audience, for the Eastern Cape to be approved as the host province of both the IRONMAN South Africa (Nelson Mandela Bay) and the IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa (Buffalo City) therefore places it within the iconic ranks of IRONMAN international host venues.
For those of you who don’t know too much about the IRONMAN, it is made up of a one-lap 3.8km swim course which starts at the blue-flag Hobie Beach, heading out parallel to Shark Rock Pier turning left after 300 meters. The course then goes past Humewood Beach all the way to Kings Beach before turning and heading back towards Hobie Beach. The new bike course takes athletes out on two laps of 90km in what is a spectacular bike course on the IRONMAN circuit. The route takes athletes along the coast, into the heart of the city, through indigenous coastal fynbos nature reserves and then takes the athletes back home with kilometers of spectacular ocean views along our magnificent coastline.
The event has grown to such an extent that currently more than 90 000 athletes compete in IRONMAN races around the world to earn slots to race the IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, with Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship offering 75 qualifying slots for the 2015 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua. The IRONMAN mantra is “Anything is Possible”. For athletes and non athletes, this spectacular annual event brings people together from around the world,
16 | CAZ&CREW
The run is a three-loop course along Marine Drive where the spectators are rewarded with great vantage points from which to watch the action. Today I sit down with Colleen Were
Durant, assistant race director for the IRONMAN South Africa. Having met her on a previous occasion, I was filled with inspiration for this incredible athlete who has also participated in quite a number of IRONMAN triathlons and other events as well.
So Colleen, super to see you again and thanks so much for your time, which The Bay Life Magazine hugely appreciates as I’m sure you are super busy as the big day approaches! Let’s start by chatting about your own personal experiences as an athlete. How many IRONMAN triathlons have you competed in? Well I’ve done 3 Port Elizabeth ones, and I also competed in the one in Austria in 2008. I have also just recently entered the IRONMAN Switzerland race. Because I work for IRONMAN South Africa, I don’t compete in it as often as I would like as I am very busy working on the day. But I have managed to finish every IRONMAN I have ever entered.
Wow, that’s incredible. How did you find the Austria event compared to the Port Elizabeth race? It was professionally run and I definitely
THE BAY LIFE PEOPLE
found that South Africa is on the same level of professionalism. I joined a bunch of South Africans in Austria that coordinated the whole tour (South African suppliers as well as athletes). It was really an incredible experience. The race route is around the most beautiful fresh water lake which apparently freezes in its entirety in winter. The cycle course is comparable to ours here, and the running course is very flat and runs through the city centre.
So, as someone who is not very athletic personally, you certainly inspire me! Do you know of anyone that’s been able to achieve this within a year of training if they had not performed a triathlon before? Yes, absolutely. Our tagline is: ‘Anything is possible’. Gordon Graham from Algoa FM is a walking example. He went from an absolute novice to someone who completed an entire race and he, in fact, does work for us now as an announcer on some of the races. He made a statement that he was going to do it, and he did it! He loves it. He has now also gone on to become the chairman of Amatola Triathlon Association in East London.
Good to know! See, readers? Anything is possible! So, how did it feel crossing the finish line of your first completed race? Tell us about that? This was 2008. The feeling in my mind was “I own this”. For me, that is something that will always stick out. Honestly, it’s not about the day, it’s a journey and it’s an experience. They go hand in hand. It seems impossible until it’s done, and then it becomes very possible.
Did you at any time feel “I have to stop now, I can’t go on!” Oh no, I don’t have that mentality. What’s
very important for people that have never done it before is to understand that the training is the hard part. You are cross training all the time! The race day is the reward.
island: the Waikiki Rough water Swim (2.4 mi./3.85 km), the Around-Oahu Bike Race (115 mi / 183km; originally a twoday event) and the Honolulu Marathon (26.2 mi./42.195 km).
How would someone start training for this?
With a nod to a local runner who was notorious for his demanding workouts, Collins said, “Whoever finishes first, we’ll call him the Iron Man.” So, on the 18th February 1978, 15 competitors lined up at the start of the very first IRONMAN event.
You need to have a base, as you would need to with anything that is of an extreme nature. We live in a beautiful country. It doesn’t make sense that you’d want to only train in a gym. You don’t have to put in extreme hours, but you have to put in the time. Standard training tends to be standard but in each discipline you need to build up to your goal.
For our readers that don’t know the history behind it, how did the IRONMAN event originate? The sport of triathlon was born in Mission Bay, San Diego in 1974. A US naval officer, John Collins and his wife had taken part in triathlons staged in 1974 and 1975 by the San Diego Track Club. The idea for the original IRONMAN Triathlon arose during the awards ceremony for the 1977 Oahu Perimeter Relay (a running race for 5-person teams). Among the participants were numerous representatives of both the Mid-Pacific Road Runners and the Waikiki Swim Club, whose members had long been debating which athletes were more fit, runners or swimmers. On this occasion, Commander John Collins pointed out that a recent article in Sports Illustrated magazine had declared that the great Belgian cyclist, Eddy Merxc had the highest recorded “oxygen uptake” (VO2 Max) of any athlete ever measured, so perhaps cyclists were more fit than anyone. John Collins suggested that the debate should be settled through a race combining the three existing longdistance competitions already on the
The world championship is still held in Hawaii to this day. This is the ultimate endurance race in the world. Only qualifiers that have raced the IRONMAN can enter.
Is that your goal? To get to Hawaii? If I get a free ticket! I’m sure every athlete would dream of it. Someone said to me recently that they didn’t race, but went there with someone that did. He said that it was amazing because it is the world championship. Anyone that is anyone in the triathlon world is there. It is the ultimate. What was great to hear is that he did say that the IRONMAN South Africa in Port Elizabeth is equally as well organized, which was great to know!
We are really fortunate as residents of the Nelson Mandela Bay to host this event! Tell us the story behind why this location was chosen? Durban and Cape Town were mentioned. A director came here, loved the environment and decided to try it. The first year it was a half event. It was so successful and thereafter it’s always been a full event. It’s an ideal environment for the event and the city is very much onboard. There is only one full IRONMAN in Africa, and the Port Elizabeth event has just been upgraded to a continental championship.

THE BAY LIFE PEOPLE
So how did it all begin for you? From a competitor to becoming the assistant director of IRONMAN?
so I was not disappointed. It was great to be “behind the scenes” and work with the Triangle Team to deliver the event in EL that it has become.
support, the greater the event. The athletes want good support. It’s encouraging and puts a smile on their face.
As a road runner, I had heard about “IRONMAN” and decided that I wanted to do it too. My very first experience of an IRONMAN event was as a spectator in 2007. There I was, on the pier on race morning. ‘Wow!’ was the only word I can use to explain it all… the “doof doof” of the music pounding in my chest, the drumming of the cultural drummers and dancers on the beach, the anthem and the firing of the canon. None of this was expected….but I had also had no clue what to expect! What a day…..I soaked up the vibe and atmosphere, on the pavements of Marine Drive, the whole day and into the night. What an event! As you watch the race unfold, you feel as if you almost get to know the athletes personally. There you are, into the dark of the night, supporting these people whom you’ve never met before….and boy, do they appreciate your support.
So, 2008 IRONMAN South Africa – Nelson Mandela Bay was to be my event! On the 1st November 2007, I climbed on a “road bike” for the first time ever. From 2011 I joined as a volunteer as their transition director. Our race director, Paul Wolff, contacted me in mid 2013 to say he’s going to approach me to be an assistant race director and I couldn’t believe it. He contacted me November 2013 to make the offer. In 3 days it was signed and sealed and I joined them January 2014.
Has there been a stand out moment that really touched you that you’d like to share with us?
Great story, wow, it almost gets my adrenaline pumping just imagining how that must have felt for you. This event is no small task. You mentioned that Port Elizabeth is a team of 13. Tell our readers about some of the examples of the many things that go in to organizing such an incredible event?
Nicky! It’s not about the prize money… it’s about achieving “what I am able to achieve” as an athlete. Whether you come first or you come last, you get the same medal. The pros win prize money and world championship qualifying points. The last person is as important as the first person, which is very special.
The next evening, I was at the awards dinner when Paul Kaye told the “virgin athletes” to please stand up and then announced to them: “You are an IRONMAN”. Well that was the final straw….. the next year, I was definitely going to be on that starting line. Ironically, at that stage, I happened to be working as the sports marketing officer for the Buffalo City Municipality’s Amenities Department. Word was that IRONMAN 70.3 was looking to come to East London. I phoned Paul (whom I had never met before) and when next in East London, we met and IRONMAN 70.3 Buffalo City was agreed to and scheduled for January 2008 in East London. By this stage, I was a committed entrant to Port Elizabeth’s “full” event – fortunately - as I was then installed as the co-ordinator for the municipality in fulfilling their role in preparing the city to partner with Triangle Events to host the event in the city for the first time. So, as a worker, there was no chance for me to participate…..but PE was my goal anyway,

There’s a lot of documentation that needs to be done. Meeting with city and safety representatives, ensuring that there is compliance to the safety acts. Whew, there is honestly so much that goes into it: marketing, administration, media, merchandising... the list goes on! We also have the charity ‘Ironman for the kids’ and R8.7 million has been raised to date for children’s charities.
For our readers that have never been involved before, where is the best place to go to catch all the action? Well the beachfront comes alive in race week. More and more international athletes come yearly. This area is engulfed with a lovely tourist vibe, with everyone knowing there’s an IRONMAN coming. Flags are flying and the atmosphere starts building. It is honestly ‘goose bump inducing’ to be involved with and I never grow tired of it. Support, support! The greater the
I would have to say the ultimate moment is probably your first IRONMAN. There’s nothing quite like it. After all my years of being involved (from 2007) I still eat, sleep and drink it. I just love it. It doesn’t get better than this!
What is the prize money for the winner?
Colleen… amazing sitting down with you today and I loved learning more about this event. Any final words for our readers? If anyone would like to experience the race, why don’t you volunteer? You can have a great day. There are different areas where you can work. We can’t do this without the people of the city. You can go to the website and click on volunteers. IRONMAN African Championship - Email address pe@ worldendurancesa.co.za What’s important for people to realize is that it’s not about doing the IRONMAN, it’s about doing something. Get out there; take the first step, maybe one day you will do an IRONMAN because everything is possible. It doesn’t have to be the ultimate goal. Just get out there and do something! So readers, you heard it here! Get down to the IRONMAN March 29th and support these incredible athletes in their ultimate hunt for victory. See you there!

THE BAY LIFE HEALTH & WELLNESS
REAL FOOD
So… you’re still skeptical about Banting? By: Sharon Jessop BOOT CAMP ACADEMY SOUTH AFRICA Starting a new lifestyle altogether, getting used to tossing everything you THOUGHT you knew about healthy eating out the window and “blindly” trusting people who tell you to eat lots of good fats and oils... truly a leap of faith! We hear about so many success stories, but still remain worried or maybe just slightly concerned about our health, our cholesterol or weight for that matter! After all, we’ve been told to eat everything “no fat” and “low fat”, but it’s “ok” to eat copious amounts of sugar and that you “need” carbs… and now we’re told to drop the sugar and the carbs – one can get pretty lost in this world that appears confused at this point! Or is it confused? On that note, meet Rosanne Rudman, avid boot camper and about to walk down the aisle with the love of her life. Here’s Rosanne’s amazing story! Says Rosanne: “A few months ago, I found myself overweight, tired all the time, eating unhealthily while still trying to fit in a bit of exercise every week. I had previously tried different diets like counting calories, or weighing all my food; but nothing seemed to work. When I was first introduced to the LCHF way of eating, I couldn’t comprehend giving up my two sugars in my coffee or my rice with my dinners. In August last year, Boot Camp ran a weight loss challenge where we had to follow a LCHF diet and exercise a minimum of three hours per week. I accepted the challenge and decided to change my lifestyle. The first two weeks were challenging as I had to get used to the new way of eating. I lost a total of 10kgs in 5 months and I dropped
20 | CAZ&CREW
two dress sizes. I have so much more energy and I don’t get bloated anymore after meals. When I originally started this way of eating, I thought that I would eat like this for three months and then revert back to my old ways. But this is my lifestyle now; I would never be able to go back to my old ways.”
we could find. These foods did not include pure starch in the form of bread, pasta, rice or potatoes. We have only eaten these starchy foods for 5 000 – 10 000 years, since the development of agriculture. In such a relatively short time, only a limited adaptation of our genes would take place.
Well done Rosanne for taking charge and changing your lifestyle for the better! What’s more is that Rosanne’s success inspired both her parents to also explore the LCHF way of living and her mother has lost 13kg, and her father 14kg – this means that as a family their combined weight loss is a whopping 37kgs, and they did it without starving, without having to count calories and without having to weigh their food.
With the Industrial Revolution, 100 – 200 years ago, we established factories that could manufacture large amounts of pure sugar and white flour. Rapidly digested pure carbohydrates were available everywhere. We’ve had absolutely NO time to genetically adapt to these processed foods.
The health benefits are amazing as well. We’ve had reports of people coming off their cholesterol meds, their blood pressure tablets, their insulin tablets, even the need for allergy medication ceases when you eat real food. But WHY does the LCHF lifestyle work so well? What are the scientific and medical reasons behind it? Have any trials and /or experiments been done? We have all of these testimonials about the successes of the LCHF lifestyle but do we have actual concrete evidence of it working and not being harmful to us? The short answer is YES!!!
The Theory Behind LCHF What are you designed to eat? Humans have evolved over millions of years as hunter-gatherers, without eating large amounts of carbohydrates. We ate the food available to us in nature by hunting, fishing and gathering all the edible foods
In the 80s, the fear of fat gripped the western world. Low-fat products popped up everywhere. But if you eat less fat you need to eat more carbohydrates to feel satiated. And it’s at this time in history that the disastrous epidemics of obesity and diabetes started. The most fat-phobic country in the world, the USA, was hit the hardest and is now the world’s most obese country. Today, it’s clear that the fear of real food with natural fat contents has been a big mistake.
The problem with sugar and starch All digestible carbohydrates are broken down into simple sugars in the intestines. The sugar is then absorbed into the blood, raising the blood glucose levels. This increases the production of the hormone insulin, our fat storing hormone. Insulin is produced in the pancreas. In large amounts insulin prevents fat burning and stores surplus nutrients in
THE BAY LIFE HEALTH & WELLNESS the fat cells. After a few hours (or less) this may result in a shortage of nutrients in the blood, creating feelings of hunger and cravings for something sweet. Usually at that point people eat again. This starts the process again: a vicious cycle leading to weight gain and ill health. On the other hand, a low intake of carbs gives you lower, more stable blood glucose, and lower amounts of insulin. This increases the release of fat from your fat stores and increases the fat burning. This usually leads to fat loss, especially around the belly in abdominally obese individuals. We’ve seen this happen repeatedly over the last few years.
Weight loss without hunger A LCHF diet makes it easier for the body to use its fat reserves, as their release is no longer blocked by high insulin levels. This may be one reason why eating fat gives a longer feeling of satiety than carbohydrates. It’s been shown in a number of studies: When people eat all they want on a low carb diet calorie intake typically drops naturally, without the need to “count calories”. So, no counting or food weighing is necessary. You can forget about the calories and trust your feelings of hunger and satiety. Most people don’t need to count or weigh their food any more than they need to count their intake of breath. If you don´t believe it, just try for a couple of weeks and see for yourself.
Health as a bonus No animals in nature need the assistance of nutritional expertise or calorie charts to eat. And still, as long as they eat the food they are designed to eat they stay at a normal weight and avoid obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Why would humans be an exception? Why would YOU be an exception? In scientific studies not only is the weight improved on a low carb diet – the blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol profile (HDL, triglycerides) are also improved. A calm stomach and less cravings for sweet food are also common experiences. Remember people, the human body is designed to be lean and active! Our modern lifestyle has taken all of that away from us. Give Banting (LCHF) a try and see and experience for yourself. We DARE you!!!

THE BAY LIFE INSIGHT
HARASSMENT
by: Joanne Anthony
The protection from harassment act The Protection from Harassment Act was developed to protect the defenceless and helpless in our society which often includes women. This Act is supposed to provide an easy, quick and inexpensive way for a person to secure a court order against someone who is harassing a complainant which negatively affects the complainant’s rights and dignity. Anyone (including a child) who is subjected to such unwanted attention may apply for a Protection Order at the magistrates court nearest to where either the complainant or the harasser lives or works, or to where the harassment is taking place. It is not necessary for the complainant to engage the assistance of an attorney in order to bring this application. The complainant need simply fill out the relevant application form, obtainable at the court, and provide the details of the harassment and the reasons why the protection sought is necessary. The application for protection from harassment is an unusual procedure because the magistrate may make the initial court order (“the interim order”) without the prior knowledge of the person against whom the order is sought. Also, because of the nature of the application, the physical home and work addresses of the complainant may be omitted from the Protection Order. If you are a victim of harassment, you may approach the magistrates’ courts in terms of this Act to obtain a protection order against any person who is harassing you. A person who breaches a protection order may be criminally charged and, if found guilty, held liable to a fine or imprisonment.
1. What is harassment? Harassment is any conduct (whether it be direct or indirect) that the perpetrator knows or ought to know will cause mental, psychological, physical or economic harm or inspires the reasonable belief on the part of the victim that harm will be caused to a person (referred to in the Act as the “complainant”) or any member of the family or household of the complainant
22 | CAZ&CREW
or any other person in a close relationship with the complainant. The Act refers to any member of the family, household of the complainant or any person in a close relationship with the complainant as a “related person”.
Harassment includes: •
•
•
unreasonably following, watching, pursuing or accosting a person (or related person) or loitering outside of or near a building or place where a person (or related person) resides, works, carries on business, studies or happens to be. unreasonable verbal, electronic or other communication (regardless of whether or not conversation ensues). unreasonable sending or delivery of letters, telegrams, packages, faxes, email to a person (or related person).
•
sexual harassment
•
Bullying (including cyber bullying) is a form of harassment covered by the Act.
The Protection Act defines the phrase ‘Electronic Communications Service Provider’ by reference to the Regulation of Interception of Communication and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act, 70 of 2002 (RICPCI) as:
as such in terms of the Electronic Communications Act; and (b) Internet service provider;” If the court is satisfied that a protection order must be issued where the identity of the electronic harasser is unknown, the court may issue a direction ordering a service provider to furnish the court with •
the e-comm’s identity number from where the harassing e-comm or e-mail originated;
•
the name, surname, identity number and address of the respondent to whom the e-comm’s identity number has been assigned;
•
any information which indicates that e-comm or e-mail was or was not sent from
•
the e-comm’s identity number of the respondent to the e-comm identity number of the complainant; and
•
any other information that is available which may assist the court to identify the
•
respondent or the service provider which provides a service to the respondent.
•
Normally the service provider must provide the information or respond that it does not have the information within five ordinary court days. But before providing the information the service provider must, at least 48 hours before it does so, inform the respondent
“(a) person who provides an electronic communication service under and in accordance with an electronic communication service licence issued to such person under Chapter 3 of the Electronic Communications Act, and includes any person who provides— (i) a local access communication service, public pay-telephone service, valueadded network service or private electronic communication network as defined in the Electronic Communications Act (ii) any other electronic communication service licensed or deemed to be licensed or exempted from being licensed
of• the information that is to be provided to the court; • the reference number of the direction; and • the name and address of the court.
THE BAY LIFE INSIGHT 2. What is a protection order? A protection order is a court order granted by the magistrates’ court prohibiting the perpetrator from engaging in or attempting to engage in harassment or enlisting the help of another person to do so. A protection order may contain a list of specific acts which the perpetrator may not commit. When granting a court order, the court may also order the South African police to seize any weapon in the possession of the perpetrator and/or to accompany you to collect any belongings which you may have identified in the application for the order. If the court is of the view that a criminal act has been committed, it may also require the South African police to investigate with a view to the possible institution of a criminal prosecution.
3. How serious must the harassment be in order to apply for a protection order? The magistrate, when considering your application, will consider the merits and seriousness of your complaint which you make under oath on Affidavit and the court will use its discretion in each case based on its own set of circumstances. Although the Act does not specify how serious the conduct must be in order to apply for a protection order, as a general rule South African courts will not concern themselves with minor or frivolous matters. The court will only issue a protection order if it is the perpetrator’s behaviour is unreasonable. If a person acts frivolously, maliciously or unreasonably when applying for a protection order, the court may order that costs be awarded against that person.
4. Who may apply for a protection order? Any person who is the victim of harassment may approach the court for a protection order. A child may apply for a protection order with or without the assistance of his/her parents or guardian.
5. Against whom can protection orders be granted? You can obtain a protection order against any person who commits an act of harassment even if the perpetrator is a child (i.e. a person under the age of 18) who is old enough to appreciate the consequences of his/her actions and who knew or ought to have known that the conduct was harmful.
You do not have to be in any form of a domestic relationship with the perpetrator in order to apply for a protection order.
10. What is the process for getting a protection order?
Children over the age of 14 are legally regarded as being mature enough to understand the difference between right and wrong and can be criminally charged if they committed a criminal act such as breaching a protection order. A court may be reluctant to grant an order against a child under the age of 14 as a child under the age of 14 might not necessarily understand the difference between right and wrong.
At your local magistrates court you will be given a prescribed printed form by the clerk of the court to complete under oath in front of a commissioner of oaths. The clerk of the court will assist you and explain the process. You must support your application with evidence of the harassment as well as affidavits from other people who have knowledge of the harassment.
If a child is the respondent in an application for a protection order, the child would need to be assisted by his/ her parents or guardian.
6. What if I don’t know who is harassing me? If you do not know the identity of the person harassing you, you may still apply for a protection order. If the court is satisfied that you are being harassed it may issue a directive directing the South African police to investigate the matter and identify the perpetrator. If you are being harassed by a person who is using electronic communications such as email, text or telephone or harmful content is being posted on a website, the court may direct the electronic communications service provider concerned to provide details of the perpetrator.
7. Must I suffer harm before I can apply for a protection order? No. You may apply for a protection order if you fear that you may be harmed (mentally, psychologically, physically or economically) in future. Your fear that you may suffer harm in future must be reasonable in order for the court to issue an order.
8. Do I need a lawyer to apply for a protection order? No. The process for applying for a protection order is intended to be user friendly and inexpensive.
9. Where can I apply for a protection order? You can apply for a protection order at a magistrate’s court: •
in the area where you live;
•
in the area where the harassment occurred; or
•
in the area with the perpetrator lives.
Step 1 – Statement under oath
It is important to note that making a false statement when applying for a protection order is a criminal offence. Your application, once completed, will be submitted to the court. If you do not know who is harassing you, the court will, at this stage, direct the police to investigate and, if the harassment has occurred electronically, direct the service provider concerned to provide details of the perpetrator. The court may at this stage or at any stage of proceedings subpoena witnesses to come to court together with any documentation or objects that the court regards as being essential for its decision. Step 2A- An interim order may be granted If you believe that the perpetrator (whose identity is known to you) will attempt to avoid service of your application and if you are suffering harm or may suffer harm if an order is not granted immediately, the court will issue an interim order. If you are granted an interim order, the order will be served on the perpetrator by the clerk of the court, a sheriff or peace officer who will be informed of a day (not less than 10 days from the date of the order) when he/she may come to court to give reasons why the interim order should not be made a final order. The perpetrator may however come to court sooner to set aside the interim order if he/she gives you and the court twenty-four hours’ notice. An interim order comes into effect as soon as it is brought to the attention of the perpetrator. Step 2B - Service of the application (if an interim order is not granted) Once your application has been submitted to the court and the identity and whereabouts of the perpetrator has been established, the court will direct that certified copies of your application
CAZ&CREW | 23
THE BAY LIFE INSIGHT
be served on the perpetrator by the clerk of the court, a sheriff or peace officer. The perpetrator will be informed of a date when he/she may come to court and give reasons why a protection order should not be granted.
You will be given a certified copy of the order and the original warrant of arrest. The clerk of the court will forward certified copies of the order and of the warrant of arrest to the police station of your choice.
Step 3 - Issuing of a protection order and a warrant of arrest
The protection order and the warrant remain in force for a period of five years.
If the perpetrator does not come to court on the date specified in the notice served on him/her a protection order will be granted if the court is satisfied that there is enough evidence that harassment has occurred.
11. What happens if I am harassed even after a protection order has been granted?
If the perpetrator comes to court to oppose the issuing of the protection order a hearing will be held and the court will consider any further affidavits as well as any oral evidence. The perpetrator can be prevented from cross-examining you directly during the hearing. The court will grant a protection order to you after the hearing if it finds, on a balance of probabilities, that you have been harassed or are being harassed by the person named in your application. A warrant of arrest will be issued at the same time as the protection order. The warrant can be executed if the perpetrator breaches the court order.
If the person against whom you have a protection order contravenes that order you may hand the warrant of arrest together with an affidavit to any member of the South African police service. In considering whether or not you are suffering harm or may suffer imminent harm the police officer will take into account the risks to your safety or well-being, the seriousness of the conduct, the length of time since the breach occurred and the nature and extent of harm that you have previously suffered as a result of the actions of the perpetrator. In addition to reporting the breach of the protection order, you may lay criminal charges if the perpetrator has committed any other crimes. A person who contravenes a protection

order may be held liable on conviction to a fine or imprisonment of a period not exceeding five years. Each instance of breach of the protection order can give rise to a separate charge. Before the Protection from Harassment Act, protection orders were only available to people experiencing physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, psychological, economic and other forms of abuse from a person with whom they had a domestic relationship. This meant that one could only get a protection order against someone they were married or engaged to; in a romantic, intimate or sexual relationship with; their parent, child or family member, or someone they were living with. A person wishing to obtain a protection order under this new act does not have to prove the existence of a domestic relationship, which was often a hurdle to obtaining protection in certain situations, such as instances of abuse between an educator and a learner. The Protection from Harassment Act does not prohibit a person from applying for a protection order under that Act if they may fall into the category of domestic relationship and apply for a protection order under the Domestic Violence Act.

THE BAY LIFE COMMUNITY
COMMUNITY
MAKE THE DIFFERENCE – THE EXCITING WAY LEFT: The Port Elizabeth based CANSA Relay For Life volunteer committee is inviting you to register your teams of 10 to 15 people at www.cansarelayforlifepe. co.za. They are from the left, back Cindy Slabbert, Michele Beadon, Elston Benjamin, Joan Duarte (CANSA staff partner), Laurie Beadon, Ansie van der Westhuizen and LeeAnne Jones. Seated in front from the left are Colette Ferreira, Angela Pattinson, Mary Anne Chantson and Yvette Grobler.
The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) calls on all communities - companies, schools, churches, families and friends – to make a difference in a fun way, by registering for the 7th annual Relay For Life event taking place in PE in March this year. “We are aiming for 60 teams to break through the average of 50 teams we have attracted at the past two years’ events. Ten teams have entered to date,” said Lee-Anne Jones, chairperson for the CANSA Relay For Life event.
ENTERTAINMENT THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT The event takes place on Friday 6 March from 18:00 to Saturday 7 March at 06:00 at Victoria Park High School’s sport complex in Union Road, Walmer. “With loads of entertainment and activities throughout the night, this experience strives to be one of the most exciting and fun ways of making a difference. It can also serve as a valuable team building activity for companies, schools and churches or simply bringing a group of friends together again,” Lee-Anne said.
HONOURING IN A VERY SPECIAL WAY Relay is not merely a fundraising event. It is an event that not only brings communities together to celebrate and honour cancer survivors and caregivers, but it also provides an opportunity to remember those who have lost the battle against cancer. “We remember them by decorating a Luminaria Bag that will light the track from dusk till dawn. You and your community are invited to register a team of 10 to 15 team members for R650 per team and receive ten Luminaria
bags,” said Lee-Anne.
CELEBRATING DECADES The year 2015 is an absolute highlight for this volunteer-led organisation, both globally and in locally. The Relay For Life, which is an international event in 30 countries across the globe, celebrates its 30th anniversary next year. The very first relay was held by one man who wanted to make a difference in his community in the USA. It also marks its tenth anniversary on South African soil – our first decade. Over the last two years the Port Elizabeth event has raised over R370 000 for CANSA.
REDUCING THE IMPACT OF CANCER “We relay because cancer is a critical health threat affecting the lives of one in four South Africans with over 100 000 dying from the disease each year. Funds raised through Relay For Life are used to support CANSA’s health awareness campaigns and programmes to reduce the impact of cancer in your community,” Lee-Anne adds. “Relay For Life gives your community an opportunity for friendly competition while coming together for a cause that touches everyone irrespective of age, gender or race,” she concludes. MOTIVATION
TO SUCCEED You need to get out of your own way The first step towards success in life and in sport is to get out of your own way. You need to stop sabotaging yourself by allowing your fears, your doubts and self-defeating thoughts to interfere with your performance. To put it bluntly, to be the best you can be in sport and in life, you need to get over yourself. You need to realise that you are never racing against anyone but yourself. If you have done the work, the only thing that can stop you from succeeding is yourself. Success starts with the expectation of success. Remember, you cannot outperform your self-esteem. We tend to act consistent to our self-esteem. Those with a positive self-esteem find ways to ensure their success, while those with a negative self-esteem tend to find ways to self-destruct. When they do well, they do not give themselves enough credit. When they do badly, they beat themselves up. To establish or maintain a positive selfesteem, we need to keep ourselves in check. We need to let go of the
26 | CAZ&CREW
self-defeating thoughts, behaviours and emotions that tend to undermine our success, such as:
FEAR.
We all have a built in fight-orflight mechanism to help us survive. We are ready to either fight or flee when we are threatened. Our body treats all perceived threats as real, even if they are imagined. In reality, most threats are not a danger to life or limb. They are psychological threats to our self-esteem and ego. Fear can paralyse us. It is a threat to our self-esteem. When fear threatens to take control of you, remember the cycling principle of looking where you want to go rather than looking at what you want to avoid. Focus on what you want, not what you don’t want. This might be relatively easy when things are going your way. The real challenge is to keep fear at bay and maintain your confidence when things are not going your way. The best way to maintain your confidence during challenging times is to focus on where you are going, not where you are at present nor where you were in the
past. Remember, every day and every training session brings new opportunity for progress and success. Take heart from the words of Robert G Ingersoll (an American civil war veteran) who said that: “The greatest test of courage on the earth is to bear defeat without losing heart.”
ANGER.
The golf legend, Arnold Palmer, once said: “What separates the great players from the good ones is not so much ability as brain power and emotional equilibrium”. Choose to be the master of your emotions, not the servant. Anger is one of the emotions that can sabotage your performance, because anger is born out of frustration and expectations. Once you learn to deal with your frustrations and have realistic expectations, you will learn to control your anger.
ANXIETY.
We all become anxious. Anxiety is not a problem, in fact, a fair amount of anxiety increases our performance because it fires up the engine. But, if you allow your anxiety to get the better of you, it will paralyse you
THE BAY LIFE HEALTH & WELLNESS and sabotage your success. When you feel the butterflies arrive, acknowledge your anxiety, and then take control by first identifying what is causing your anxiety, then ask yourself if that which is making you anxious is under your control. If it is under your control, focus on finding a solution rather than fixating on the problem. If it is not under your control, let it go. Obsessing will only deplete your mental and physical resources.
SELF-DOUBT.
Self-doubt is the alternative to self-confidence. Selfdoubt creates a state of mind where you give far too much “air time” to the negative things that could happen (the “what ifs”) instead of focusing on the positive aspects of who you are and what you can do. If you indulged self-doubt, you risk becoming the embodiment of your negative thoughts and derailing your quest for success. To avoid this self-sabotage, you need to develop the habit of only entertaining thoughts that reinforce your selfconfidence. Remember you are in control of your self-confidence, even though it does not always feel like it. Various situations and experiences may influence your confidence, but the nature of their influence is under your control. These situations and experiences do not automatically deplete your confidence; you allow them to take away your confidence when you stop believing in yourself. Maintaining a high level of confidence is a mental skill that requires you to think and act in ways that give you the best opportunity to succeed. This might mean that you have to fake it until you make it! So, take ownership of your confidence by basing it on sources within your control. Arnold Palmer reminded himself of this truth by sticking the following quote in his locker: “Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man but sooner or later the man who wins is the man who thinks he can”.
SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS. Some people are too concerned with what other people will think of them. They are too afraid of looking bad or embarrassing themselves. They focus on what people will say rather than on the joys of succeeding at a challenge. If you are afraid of embarrassing yourself, you cannot perform well. No one has ever died of embarrassment. The worst that can happen is that you learn to laugh at yourself. For example, some people would like to do a triathlon but they never try, because they are afraid of being last or displaying their less than
perfect bodies. If you allow thoughts such as these to prevent you from trying, you are defeating yourself. The victory of finishing a triathlon is the petrol you need to succeed in life, while the selfconsciousness that prevents you from starting is what sabotages your success. Remember, don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do. Focus on the rewards of success rather than on the penalties of failure.
PERFECTIONISM.
Self-critical, negative perfectionists are their own worst enemies. They are never satisfied with their performance, they can never do enough. Perfectionists tend to have a very critical, self-condemning voice. Their mindset is fuelled by the fear of failure. They cannot separate their performance from their selfesteem. If they do not perform well, they tend to tell themselves that they are failures. If they do well, they do not give themselves enough credit. Concern yourself with effort and continuous improvement rather than pursuing perfection. This will allow you to neither be devastated by losses nor overexcited by wins. To perform at your best, you need to concern yourself with consistent confidence as opposed to dependence on emotional peaks. For every peak, there is a corresponding valley. As long as you combine an insatiable desire to improve with belief in your preparation, you will continue to progress towards your goal.
STUBBORNNESS.
This is not in itself a negative trait, but if your stubbornness makes you unwilling to learn, it will stunt your progress. This kind of stubbornness means that you are not open to change. You believe better the devil you know, than the devil you do not know. This in turn prevents you from taking risks that will help you to reach the next level.
LACK OF MOTIVATION.
Some people lack the internal drive to become the best they can be. You cannot buy motivation. Others can help motivate you, but in the end, it must come from within. You must find the internal and constant desire to do your best at all times and under any circumstances.
LACK OF COMMITMENT.
Some of us desire success but we are not willing to commit to our dreams. Success starts with a dream and a desire to be successful. To move beyond the dream, you need to be committed to make the sacrifices and avoid the distractions that could sabotage your success. If you start to stumble at this
hurdle, remind yourself of why this dream is important to you. Then use your answer to fuel your commitment. Remember that sport and work are things you do, not who you are. Separate your self-worth and personal identity from your performance. If you allow your self-worth and personal identity to be linked with your performance, the pressure to always perform at your peak will drain you and you will lose your love for your work and your sport along with your confidence.
PERSISTENCE.
Successful people see setbacks as opportunities to stage a comeback. They are persistent. They remain optimistic when times are tough. They refuse to give up. They know that success will follow if you are patient, persevere and persist at working towards realising your dreams. In the words of the basketball legend, Michael Jordan, “Don’t practise until you get it right – practise until you can’t get it wrong”. Challenge yourself to face adversity. Believing in your ability is easy when there are no obstacles to overcome. Maintaining confidence when facing challenging situations is tougher. Yet, overcoming these challenges will build your confidence. Develop the attitude that demanding situations are challenges to be sought out rather than threats to be feared and avoided. Recognise these situations as part of becoming the best you can be. Remember, we usually learn the most in challenging situations. Focus on what you need to do to overcome the challenges rather than focusing on how difficult it may be. This attitude will allow you to stay positive and motivated and maintain your confidence. Recognise the obstacles in your path to success as opportunities to progress and improve your skills rather than catastrophes waiting to happen. Always look for ways to stage a comeback. A race is not over until you cross the finishline and each race/training session is only part of your journey towards your ultimate goal. A bad patch in your training and/or in a race is merely that: a bad patch. Do not allow it to be more than it is. Remember, Napoleon said that: “Victory belongs to him who has the most perseverance”, because in his experience most battles were won in the 11th hour. Likewise, Thomas Edison reminds us that: “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up”.

The best way to relax - Cruising
Well it is almost that time again when the IRONMAN comes rolling into PE… and what better way to relax those tired muscles than to book a cruise? There are so many possibilities - from local cruising with departures from our waters in Cape Town and Durban, to cruising the Caribbean, river cruises and even barging in Europe. Depending on the time you have, and the type of holiday you are looking for, here is a quick guide of some of the options available:
1. MSC cruises (departing from South Africa) Normally this season starts around November and ends in April of each year. There are many dates to choose from and nights away range from 3 to 7 nights.
Destinations are normally Mozambique and Namibia and even a cruise from Italy down to SA in October 2015. These cruises are very popular with the SA market and the sooner bookings are made, the better for discounts and good deals.
2. Uniworld (river cruises) A very relaxing way of seeing Europe, China, Russia or even Vietnam and Cambodia from a whole different viewpoint. This is also an all inclusive type of holiday where all the meals are included and you get to see all the major attractions as they dock mostly in the heart of the cities and villages. Also, there is no waiting in long queues to get on / off the ships.
3. Le Boat (for the more independent holiday goer) You can hire your own boat and sail down the beautiful barges in France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Holland, Germany and even Ireland, all in your own time. For those who like to explore and do things at their own pace, this is a wonderful idea and you can even hire bicycles which you keep on-board and use to explore when on land . These boats typically have everything you need on them – kitchens, bathrooms, sleeping areas and more. And of course there are the bigger Cruise liners that sail the seas to every place imaginable – all you have to do is decide where you want to go and when!

Heavenly Stables Beach Rides
By: Teresa Pretorius My resolution this year is to have no resolutions, but rather, to follow my passions. There is way too much social pressure to ‘Be Something’. I decided that I can be many things. First on my list, because of pressure from my horsemad child: I can be a horse rider. I made contact with Jackie at Heavenly Stables, Sardinia Bay, who eased my mind on all questions of safety. My body, however, was not convinced. We booked a morning outride of 2 hours, through the trails in the Sardinia Bay Nature reserve, and onto the beach. My child has been on a horse at age 3, but is not at all experienced. On arrival we were asked what riding experience we had and were fitted with riding hats and introduced to Danielle Aucamp, our friendly guide and experienced rider. Danielle explained how to hold the reins, which way to lean on downhills

and up hills and general position. All of the horses are experienced trail horses and are very gentle. Horses are chosen according to your experience at riding, so each rider is well matched and comfortable. We filled in our indemnity forms and were off. Our first trot was met with trepidation by myself and squeals of utter joy from my child. She was in her element, listening intently to everything Danielle explained to her. The trail was a good length, with mixed gentle up and downhills, turning on the beach with a short canter, at ‘Secrets’ and heading back the way we rode out. On very hot days, it may be advisable to take water along, but we were served cold drinks on arrival back at the stables. Jackie can be contacted at Heavenly Stables on 0818907080
