Christmas is upon us and it’s time to get the Chrissy trees up and the decorations adorning the walls and doors as friends and family join together to welcome in the festive season. It’s time to make plans for social occasions and buy those presents for loved ones, so don’t dilly dally, get out there and get it moving. Many of our famed Bali restaurants are gearing up for Christmas and are offering special Christmas dinners and packages that the beat features on pages 100. Don’t miss out, book early and have a wonderful Christmas. Before the masses arrive between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, there’s still plenty on to keep all you fun loving nightlife people going strong. International and local DJs are playing in all the spots and live bands are doing the rounds. Hu’u has there Anniversary this weekend and Anantara has lined up a few internationals over the next weeks. Dani Amed’s The Rock are back playing live at Hard Rock and as we get closer to Christmas the flood gates open and the entertainment comes gushing our way. DJ Innerlight has been as much a builder of the trance community as an admirer of it. After the launch of ‘Take me to the Blue Blue Sky’ in ’04, it’s been a solid rise on the national circuit and with his latest release ‘Miracle’ ready to be launched, we thought it was time for a few words… How about your latest album ‘Miracle’, was it in the production process for a long time? It took almost two years to finish that album. I was quite selective in choosing the songs that were put on it.
It’s been a sharp rise to trance popularity for you, what have been your biggest breaks over the years in gaining respect and popularity as a DJ? I just keep digging and exploring through new sounds in order to continually spark up the trance world. I also keep my community updated via the internet so they can follow me. There’s been a lot of traveling on your agenda. What have been some of your favorite places to spin? Rave parties are still the most remarkable places for me to spin. I always find new experiences, a different crowd and an amazing atmosphere. Favorite moment of last year? Touring with my buddy from Holland Ralph Barendse (Ralphie B, Midway, First Stage) at Innerstage 2009. Worst experience of last year? Being cancelled for a Rave Party in Bandung due to a permit issue. Which international DJ’s have you enjoyed playing with the most? Playing with Gareth Emery. He is a good producer and an awesome DJ with amazing journeys behind him.

Any new tricks or surprises on the album that you haven’t played with in the past? Yes, I tried to expand my style by collaborating with artists such as UK trance singer Tiff Lacey, and the amazing new vocalist Ariga Yada. Which songs on the album mean the most to you personally and why? ‘Fade away’. I was so excited with the lyrics and the beat that I wasn’t able to sleep for almost 3 days until the song was complete. Are there any new areas of music or other fields that you would love to become involved with in the future, that you haven’t stepped foot into as of yet? Yes, I’d love to someday try playing ambience, down tempo, and chilled music. What can we look forward to hearing when you launch your album at Blue Eyes? Any words of wisdom for the masses? This Jakarta born all rounder initially pushed himself onto the stage at the Comedy Café before landing various roles as a comedic actor and MC on national film and television. After securing a name for himself as a man that doesn’t take anything too seriously, he has turned to DJing as a fresh outlet for his artistic pattern and he’s bringing the sound to Bali. The Beat stepped in for a serious chat… You’ve obviously had a keen addiction to the stage for some time, when did you first start performing in front of a crowd? My first gig was at the Zanzibar in Jakarta in 2002. What made you decide to take comedy seriously? Or be serious about comedy? Is there anything serious about comedy? Because with comedy I can be serious but not serious! I just love to make people laugh. I want everybody to be happy when they see me. Has music been running through your veins for as long as comedy and other passions? I love every part of art. Music, dance, singing and acting. In my comedy I combine all of these. What are your other passions? I have a lot of passions. Basically I like to explore everything: make albums, performing at big comedy events, making movies, etc. What were your musical influences growing up? I like all kinds of music: Rock, Blues, Soul, Funk, RnB, Hip Hop, Ballads and Dangdut. For me music can show what I am feeling. Who was your mentor on the decks? My mentor was DJ Jun Marshal, DJ Arif Janggo and all senior DJ’s that have shared decks with me in every gig. I ask them a lot of questions… Has it been an easy transition from being a comedian to being a DJ? Are people getting confused and laughing at your music? They used to! Because they couldn’t believe it was really me spinning. But after they hear me, wow, they dance and they love it. I try to make a close connection with the crowd, before, when I’m spinnin’ and after a show. So everybody has a happy ending party!

This young DJ turned his talents to Bali’s dance scene around three years ago and hasn’t looked back; he has played at some of the best clubs in Bali and around Indonesia. With a large bank of tunes from around the globe, DJ Wisdy keeps his eye out for anything new, fresh and hot. Is Now: Wisdy’s skills on decks have recently caught the eye of Wilmix Management, which recruited him to instruct international students in the fine art of DJing. In early 2009 he also started producing his own music.

Sounds Like: Rap, Hip Hop Hails From: Jakarta Has Been: Iwa K is one of the pioneers of Rap in Indonesia. In the 80’s when rock music was the thing of choice for Indonesian youngsters, Iwa K was infecting kids with the spirit of rap. He released his first album “Beatify” in 1991, with other albums following suit: Ta’kan (1991), Ku Ingin Kembali (1993), Topeng (1994), Kramotak! (1996), Mesin Imajinasi (1998), Vini Vidi Vunky (2002), Datang Lagi (2003), and It’s Time (2008). Throughout his rich career, Iwa K has received numerous awards including: best R&B album at the BASF Awards (1994) and favorite video clip at Ami Awards (1996). Not just a rapper, Iwa K has also tried his hand at sports presenting and has performed in numerous films and mini series. Is Now: Iwa K released his latest album “Yin Yang” this year on which he collaborated with his wife on the track “Yang Tak Terpisahkan”. He’s already set his sights on making another album for 2010.

In connection with ‘World Aids Day’ on December 1st 2009, Bali Rainbow Community held a charity auction at the Harris Hotel and Residence Riverview in Kuta. A buffet dinner was laid out and funds raised from the ticket sales were donated to three organizations supporting HIV / AIDS patients in Bali, providing much needed medical treatment for patients including HIV/AIDS-infected children, villagers, and sex workers across six regencies in Bali.

Supporters of the Padang Earthquake school building recovery effort, were at Gado Gado Restaurant, Seminyak, on Thursday, November 26th, 2009, to bid on water colour paintings from Balinese schoolchildren aged five to eight, entitled “Karyaku Untuk Sehabat2” – or My Creation for Friends, which were specifically made to benefit elementary school kids victimized by the devastating Padang, Sumatra earthquake. The theme of the paintings was Indonesian Reefs. A website featuring the paintings, was set up by Reefcheck Foundation Indonesia, where online bidding commenced prior to the event. At the Charity Benefit evening, over 100 guests enjoyed a four course meal by Chef Quibb, whilst bidding on the colorful paintings between courses. The sixteen A3 sized paintings were auctioned by Jack Daniels, which in the end raised over 55million rupiah. Other funds were raised through the auction of luxury hotel, dinner, cruise and spa packages, kindly donated by Sofitel Seminyak, The Four Seasons Resorts, and Anantara Bali, Additional door prizes included Bali Hai Cruises, dance lessons from Jive Studio, eye wear by Oakley, shopping voucher packages by Surfer Girl, and a personally autographed canvas print of Padang-native recording artist Oppie Andaresta, which fetched the highest bid in the auction, at 12 million rupiah. Children’s clothing was donated by Flowers for Zoe. The headline act of the evening, was a concert by Padang native Oppie Andaresta, and musical friends Rio Sidik (Saharadja) on trumpet, Barok on Sitar, Adjat on percussion, and guest guitarist Richie. In the end, over 89million rupiah was raised, which will be channeled through Sanari Foundation, to support the educational recovery of elementary school children; fix damaged school infrastructures, and provision of educations materials. Each guest ticket purchased a schoolkit for the Padang students, within which were a backpack, schoolbooks, pencils, pens and other tools.

Gofar is not into trendy brands, and says that he picks up most of his clothes at secondhand stores, gets them from friends or makes them himself. t 27-years-of-age Made Nagi dedicates most of his time and energy to his two passions; his family and photography. With a particular interest in photo-journalism, Made began his career as a full time photographer at The Bali Post in 2003. With no formal education in the field of photography (Made studied Engineering at Udayana University), Made has paved his way in this highly competitive field through sheer talent and dedication. Made’s career began to bloom in 2005 when he was selected to participate in the Bali Photoworkshop held by John Stanmeyer and Garry Knight from VII Photo Agency. In 2007 he participated in a workshop for young Asian photographers at the Angkor Photography Festival in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Since then, Made has been awarded second place in the Digital Camera Magazine Photographer of the Year 2007 competition (street category) and in TEMPO Magazine’s Choice Photographer Award (portrait category) in 2008. House good starting point would be ‘house music’. With its 118 to 135 Beats Per Minute, simple signature 4/4 percussion holding a thumping kick drum on every beat, galloping rhythms and textured keyboard synths, this style of electronic music has become the bread and butter that the mainstream dance music scene has learnt to live on. Chicago was the breeding ground for the development of house with underground clubs and discos churning it out for African-American, Latino-American and alternate lifestyle audiences around 1984-85. The tempo was a touch slower back then, but the kick drum driven ‘four to the floor’ beat was still the driving force, generally generated by a drum machine or sampler. The music’s percussive strength was taken from the

soul and funk infused sounds of disco and thanks to early disco DJ’s, producers and audio engineers such as Walter Gibbons and Ron Hardy, mixing and editing techniques were applied while electronic effects, 303 bass synthesizers, pop samples and vocals with a twist of reverb or delay spun it into a new direction. After spreading through New York and onward to Europe, House became popularized in the mainstream music industry through pop artists such as Madonna and the Pet Shop Boys. Throughout clubs worldwide it is still the most widely appreciated form of dance music and has spun off into a huge amount of sub genres. And what are those sub-genres exactly? Paying homage to the filming style of the 70’s, Tarentino brings a white charger and a black challenger together for a high speed pursuit along outback American roads and adds his usual twisted humor to the mix. 27-year-old Filipino-Australian Luke Landrigan claimed victory over 17-year-old Filipino Marvin Abat after a 30 minute duel in 4-5 foot surf at the 2nd annual Aloha Boardsports Longboard Pro Invitational contest at the seaside surf town of La Union north of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines on the 28th of November. Presented by Global Industries and Nike 6.0, the two day event brought together 32 of the best longboarders to compete for the record first prize of 100,000 pesos (USD 2,200) and what amounts to the Philippine National Longboard title 2009. Landrigan’s smooth style and ability to complete a wide variety of aggressive maneuvers were the key to his win. “Marvin is young but has been really focusing on his longboard surfing, so I knew I just had to choose the best waves and not make any mistakes,” said Landrigan after the final. “I’m so stoked to have won this event here, especially at my home break and against all these talented surfers.” Runner up Abat was obviously delighted to be on the podium for the biggest paycheck of his young career, 50,000 pesos (USD 1,100). “I can’t believe I made it into the final! I’ve been longboarding a lot last two years, and shortboarding as well, but somehow I just like longboarding better because of the different moves I can do and in many kinds of waves. Finishing well here makes me like it even more,” he said with a grin. Certainly this runner up finish will further encourage the talented young man, and the future of Filipino longboarding looks very bright indeed. of surfing displayed throughout the weekend, stating, “This is my first trip to the Philippines and I’m delighted to have been part of this event. Its great to see how committed the crew here are to longboarding and that they are performing so well.” The weekend’s activities began on Friday with surf lessons for the media in the morning and then an official judging seminar in the afternoon. Two days of competitive surfing followed, with conditions ranging from 2-3 foot waves on Saturday up to the occasional 5 foot set as the swell increased on Sunday. The event wrapped up on Sunday evening with the awards presentation, live bands, fire dancer performances, and Indo-Board competition, and a raffle, the cash proceeds of which will go to the victims of the recent flooding disasters that occurred in the area last month.

Bubba Gump’s employees provide excellent service and actually look like they are enjoying themselves on the job. The service is friendly and accommodating and their engaging entertainment routines (including dancing and playing tunes on pots and pans) will impress more than just the little people. Just as the name implies and the movie dictates, shrimp is the specialty of the house and it’s served in a wide variety of styles that is bound to satisfy even the most discerning shrimp lover. a collection of works The Janus exhibition intends to bring together the resources of Indonesian artists in the representation of Janus. Janus is a two faced god in Greek mythology - in terms of connotative and not denotative - portrayed by Greek artists as a man with two faces. One face facing backwards and the other facing forward. The constructed meaning of this positioning is to look at time passed, with longing and at times with full expectation. The artists in this exhibition showcase representations of the nature of Janus, the nature of reflection, introspection, and longing for times past and hopes, desires, and dreams about the future. Putu finds inspiration in everything around him - things that he hears, sees and feels on an everyday basis. His homeland, Bali, is a constant source of inspiration and in his art he often explores the way in which Balinese traditional life collides with urban culture and the constant influx of tourists. One of Putu’s paintings entitled ‘Woman in Chains’ (Pictured top right) is a testament to Balinese women and their daily struggles; ‘Balinese women play an important part in Bali’s cultural life and the tourism industry but often don’t reap any benefits from it,’ says Putu.

Sejak itulah hasrat untuk bermusik semakin mendalam dan mulailah dia memperdalam keahlian bermain turntable dengan menggabungkan musik hip hop, breakbeat dan lagu klasik era tahun 70an. Satu klab di Stockholm merupakan residensial pertamanya. Pengalaman pertama memasuki dunia produksi track, Steve bekerja sama dengan Buddy Sebastian, lalu dengan Eric Prydz yang me-remix ‘Echo Vibes’. Sekarang, Steve, Sebastian, Eric dan Axwell merupakan satu gabungan yang bernama The Swedish House Mafia, satu nama yang sudah merupakan jaminan di dance scene dunia. Sounds Like Trance Hails From Loebau, Germany Has Been Ralph Kyau and Steven Moebius Albert adalah 2 orang Jerman yang sukses memproduksi hits seperti Made Of Sun, Velvet Morning, Walk Down, Kiksu, Are You Fine?, Always A Fool dan Megashira. Satu fakta menyebutkan bahwa semua vokal suara pria di setiap tracknya merupakan suara dari Albert sendiri. Pada awalnya, duo ini memakai tanda “Vs” di tengahnya, namun mereka menggantinya dengan “&”, karena mereka semakin tidak suka dengan sebutan “Versus” di tengah nama mereka berdua. entro kini genap berusia 6 tahun dan untuk merayakan acara ulang tahunnya, digelar acara yang dimulai sejak tanggal 25 November lalu. Sebagai pemanasan menjelang pesta ulang tahunnya, hadir acara kerja sama Centro dengan Vibe Liquer yang berjudul Vibe’ration Party. Dengan bintang utamanya seorang produser/DJ Edy Triana aka Innerlight, Centro menebar satu vibe bernuansa Trance ke seluruh area. Dalam acara ini, selaku sponsor maka Vibe juga berpromosi lewat sales promotion girl yang berkeliling dengan memberikan potongan harga khusus. Sementara di atas deck, DJ Mario Su dan Okie tampil sebagai pembuka sebelum Innerlight hadir dengan sederetan tembang unggulan sekaligus membagikan promo album terbarunya kepada publik. Hitungan mundur sebenarnya akan digelar lewat acara yang digelar pada tanggal 27 November, namun karena masih dalam suasana Idul Adha dan himbauan dari instansi pemerintah, maka pihak Centro membatalkan acara yang menampilkan beberapa line up seperti DJ Ical, Syeni dan groovyl@ nd DJ Set tersebut. Sehingga, seluruh kegiatan akhirnya digabung ke dalam acara utamanya.

Tanggal 28 November, Centro dihiasi oleh nuansa warna hijau sebagai perlambang dukungan sponsor dari LA Lights, baik untuk warna undangannya, backdrop, balon, maupun pakaian yang dikenakan oleh sebagian staf wanita. Seluruh elemen acara dicampur menjadi satu kesatuan seperti pagelaran busana dari para model arahan koreografer Tedy yang menampilkan karya dari Erdan dan aksesoris karya Arya Gunawan. Acara yang dipandu oleh MC Irwan Ardian dan Devi Jo ini, juga diramaikan oleh penampilan dari D’n’D Dancers dan tentunya tidak ketinggalan barisan DJ lokal maupun luar seperti mr Timothy dari Ministry of Sound Australia, lokal DJ Tiara Eve, Pierre, Angger Dimas, resident DJ Mario Su, Ari Nagan, Ready dan D2n plus VJ 9 Motion. Acara puncak adalah tiup lilin oleh salah satu wakil dari pihak Centro, hujan balon dan kembang api. Happy Birthday and a big big hug to Centro!

Pada hari pertama, tema Rio De Janeiro berjudul Fiesta digelar dengan performa dari DJ Ical, Bavo, Hizkia, Princess Joanna, MC Joey dan Carnival Dancers oleh D’Nuanza Dancers. Hari kedua dengan judul Woman Fantasy, dengan barisan feminista DJ Delizious Devina, Anya dari Belanda dan Jessica serta Rini dan MC B. Hari terakhir dengan judul Reborn yang menampilkan Dj Hogi, Winky, Kupang, Dee plus MC B, VJ Motion dan sexy dancers. Selamat untuk 2nd Floor atas perayaan ke 6 tahun dan peresmian tempat barunya. Acara ini punya pengunjung rutin dan selalu diramaikan oleh crowd yang ingin mendengarkan hits tahun terbelakang. Pada tanggal 2 December lalu, Vintage dikemas secara khusus dengan dukungan sponsor dari Coca Cola Zero dan menghadirkan seorang legenda yaitu DJ Grant Nelson. Kedatangan seorang One of The Godfathers of UK Garage ini, merupakan ke sekian kalinya ke Jakarta. Malam itu, talenta lokal yang ikut meramaikan deck adalah DJ Bhokero, resident DJ Aay dan juga visual yang diramu oleh Mutter666Motion. Jika setiap hari Rabu, Dragonfly selalu diramaikan oleh pengunjung setianya, pastilah di Vintage Legends ini, pengunjungnya lebih ramai dari biasanya. alam rangka memperingati 50 tahun kehadiran music Bossa Nova di dunia, terhitung sejak tahun 1959 hingga tahun 2009, dilangsungkan acara di Black Cat pada tanggal 1 Desember lalu. Setelah sukses menggelar ‘A Tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim, maka Black Cat bekerja sama dengan FOB (Friends of Brazil) dan MD Carinho mengadakan acara dengan tema ‘The Golden Year of Bossa Nova’. Acara ini menampilkan para musisi dengan latar belakang irama Brazillian maupun Jazz Latin. Nama seperti Zarro dan Mercy Dumais berkolaborasi dengan Ivan Nestorman dari grup band Nera. Sebelum mereka memainkan musiknya, tampil sebagai pembuka adalah Ahmad Ananda Trio. Lewat keahlian serta pengalaman, para artis membawakan hits Bossa Nova yang membuat para penikmat music di Black Cat tidak beranjak dari kursinya. Viva a Bossa Nova !.
