The Beat checks out the undeground electronic collectives on the island/ Episode 3

FEATURE

One of Bali’s most current and prolific house music collectives, Escape Presents have been making big moves all around the island ever since their relocation from Sydney, Australia in mid-2017. Kaiser Waldon and Scotty Cal along with a troop of local and international resident DJs have been uplifting the Balinese house music scene with an ethos that combines sexy, deep and melodic house & techno with good vibes to create a space for party-goers to “escape” their every day life and enjoy the present moment with friends and like-minded groovers. With now multiple residencies around the island, Escape have established themselves as one of the major party brands in hyped areas like Canggu & Uluwatu. They are well known to provide consistently good house & techno events with international headliners such as Yousef, Doorly, Edu Imbernon, Robbie Lowe and Anjuna Deep’s Westseven to name a few. Escape have come off an intense high season with the Wednesday nights at La Brisa solidifying their position in the scene thanks to a string of epic events all throughout the season. Keeping the momentum going, Escape have some very outstanding residencies at the moment including Omnia, Vault and soon to be Old Man’s, not to mention popup parties in Uluwatu and the Gili islands. Their Escape family consists of founders Kaiser Waldon & Scotty Cal, plus their residents Wisdy, Lloyd, Pete Santos, Mitchell Wick and others. All of whom have the same common interest driven by their shared values; enthusiasm, open mindedness, passion, and last, but not least – a true love of house music. www.thebeatbali.com

Canggu Nightlife A quick guide on where to go on any particular night in the Canggu area First, every sunset most of the Canggu community heads to the beach to chill out for the last hours of the day. There are a whole bunch of choices, which you can find on our website, but what we are talking about here is the after-dark nightlife of Canggu. Read on friends. When it comes to parties, you are bound to find something going on every night of the week. Disguised as a pizza place (the pizza is

40

incredible btw), Luigi’s Hot Pizza kicks off the start of the week with the PNNY crew every Monday night from 8–12pm playing eclectic house beats to jackin’ techno. If you are up for a late-night boogie, head down to the beach end of Batu Bolong any night of the week, where Old Man’s, Sandbar and Desoner are situated and some are open till very late. For the after party, Lost City in Echo Beach is also open until 4am.

FEATURE Wednesdays are one of the biggest nights of the week. With mounds of people all over the streets. Old Man’s Dirty Ol’ Wednesdays where the Beer Pong Championship takes place is always a safe bet too. Enroll yourself before dark and battle it out with dozens of other players for great prizes and lots of fun. If you are into techno then visit Desoner next door. Backyards can also pull a crowd, across the road from the Tugu Hotel. Mason Backroom, is where the more sophisticated crowd head for groovy house tunes from 9pm – 3am. And after all that you can end up at Sandbar where commercial music goes on until about 4 – 5am. By the time your hangover from Wednesday is over, it’ll be Thursday night and the gnarliest spot on a Thursday is Pretty Poison. Think backyard skate bowl meets European dungeon nightclub. Tattoos, skate bowl action and live DJs playing everything from rock & roll, hip

hop to techno. Walk over to Black Cat Mini Market next door and check out their fridge in the corner for a cheeky surprise. Lost City’s Thursday Vice City is normally rammin’ by midnight and and is their biggest night of the week with hip hop till late. If you’re looking for a dope Friday night party, there are several options! The Lawn Friday nights go from 9pm till 1am with half price on selected drinks and a range of disco, house, RnB and hip-hop tunes. Vault is a safe bet on a Friday, always supplying great house music and occasional techno, while Old Man’s continues to pack in the crowds throughout the entirety of Friday night with their live music. Live rocking bands can also be found most nights at Made Jay’s Gimme Shelter. The in-crowd can be found at Mason Backroom sipping cocktails till 3am. Hip hop beats are supplied at Lost City, hard techno can be heard at Desoner

until 4am. And as per usual, Sandbar picks up the late-night party people to end another wild night on the beach in Canggu. Saturday nights usually depend on whether there are any headliners at the clubs. One of the biggest parties on the island are La Brisa‘s Basement Love x PNNY events, bringing some of the most renown house & techno acts to the beach club on a bi-weekly schedule (sometimes longer). Old Man’s books decent acts on their main stage for Saturdays as well. Pretty Poison opens up and caters for all your party needs till midnight. Mason Backroom usually pulls a crowd on a Saturday till 3am. Regular events include Vault’s hip hop nights with the PNNY

crew, Lost City for some underground hip hop and Desoner with the hard techno. Sunday’s are actually a lot of fun. Deus are the pioneers of Sunday nights in Canggu. They boast beer on tap, a large crowd of expats, tourists and locals with live music action. Deus also hosts Tuesday nights with free tattoos and tacos. Desoner do their house music nights on Sunday and you can head towards Old Man’s for funk, hip hop and RnB, with the top 40 hits down by the beach at Sandbar till you drop. That wraps up our tour through Canggu, remember to stay safe, wear a helmet and don’t drive if you’re drunk. Have fun out there!

DJ Story #21 Bali Resident DJs Joey Fitzgerald
 England

Hi Joey, when did you become a Bali resident DJ? In 2016. Tell us your background in music I grew up just outside of Liverpool, where everybody was trying to make it as a musician. I’d been playing drums, guitars and keys in bands since I was big enough to … and spent my teens and early 20s gigging around the UK and recording in punk bands. I have a degree in Music from the University of Liverpool, which opened my eyes to the different ways to make a living from music outside of playing instruments, but it wasn’t until being dragged to Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival by my big brother that I got really interested in dance music and DJ’ing, so you can blame him for all of this.

Favourite styles to spin? Utter sleaze .. Imagine the music from a strip club in the original Star Wars universe .. and you’re probably pretty close to what I play. Current Bali residencies Potato Head, 40 Thieves, Karma Beach, Kilo, Mama San, Ulu Cliff House, SVA. (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” I’m free to take risks and play whatever I want. Thank you Joey… see you around the island. Where can we follow you? www.mixcloud.com/joeyfitzgerald www.instagram.com/hello_joey_

GEORGETOWN

The multi-ethnic, culturally charged capital of the Malaysian Penang Island boasts exquisite architecture and a remarkable collection of the city’s diverse cultures set within the eclectic urban backdrop. It’s also a home to some of the best food you’ll ever find in SE Asia. Navigate the labyrinth of Georgetown’s chaotic lanes, taste all the fragrant local food, drink all its famous aromatic coffee, explore diverse temples and dive into the booming street-art scene. With its unparalleled vibe and heritage, the “Pearl of the Orient” offers a fun experience for every traveler. Its spectacular Chinese shop houses with shabby aesthetic line the streets in the Unesco World Heritage Zone. Do not miss out on a visit to Pinang Perenakan aka Green Mansion.

www.thebeatbali.com

Recreated to its former glory, this majestic courtyard mansion was built at the end of the 19th century for a family of cultured Strait Chinese Merchants. It offers a glimpse into their opulent lifestyle and many customs and traditions. Notable for its eclectic style incorporating Chinese carved-wood panels, English floor tiles and Scottish ironworks, the manor also houses over a thousand collectibles and antiques of the era. Visiting some of the architectural gems built by the rich Hakka Chinese merchants is an absolute must while in Georgetown, but how about you also stay in one? The Cheong Fat Tze aka Blue Mansion is a colorful, ornate 19th century mansion with Victorian stained-glass windows and marvelous

indigo blue façade hiding all the glory and grandeur behind its walls. This striking boutique hotel and historic attraction stands as a memento of the lavish lifestyles of the rich Hakka Chinese. You can also book a tour and we highly recommend that you do, it was the highlight of our trip! You cannot leave Penang without trying their famous coffee. The coffee shop scene has exploded all over Georgetown. There is a ton of hip cafes serving excellent specialty coffee and quick bites. The big draw of Penang however is its local cuisine, guaranteed to make your taste buds dance. Nothing screams Penang more than its street food. A must try is a Lok Lok– fun way to eat with and meet strangers. It is a kind of communal steamboat, but every ingredient is skewered on a stick, so it doesn’t float around in the pot of boiling water in the middle. Just grab your stick

out of the water once it’s cooked. You can get everything from shrimps, oysters, meatballs to even pig ears! Smother it in variety of sauces offered on the table for personalized taste. The historic blends effortlessly with modern in downtown Georgetown. To make the stroll down the vibrant streets even more enjoyable, in 2012 the local council hired a muralist Ernest Zacharevic. His mission was to breathe new life into old Chinese shop houses and to raise awareness of the rich history of the streets. The project became an instant success turning certain areas into must visit destinations and the wall murals and graffiti are loved by both visitors and locals alike. You can find the brilliant, fun artworks spread out all over the inner city. Words & Photos by Vero

Peekaboo Peekaboo is healthy, reasonably priced and a good time to boot. The restaurant has a trendy, modern interior, that’s bright, spacious and welcoming. The staff is really friendly and attentive. Their menu is all about street food, BBQ, shared plates and craft cocktails. You can get a decent, breakfast/brunch offerings till 12pm with one of the better specialty coffees we’ve had on the island, but all the fun starts with the lunch and dinner menu. Poke bowls with good fish, flavorful, freshly tossed salads (try the Quinoa with kale) and Raw Tuna checks all the boxes. What we keep raving about is the Mushroom Ceviche with Sambal – an unusual and flavorsome concoction that tastes just the right amount of spicy and is something we haven’t seen elsewhere in Bali.

CD REVIEW

7/10

Alive & Kicking

Bombay Bicycle Club Everything Else Has Gone Wrong Six years on from their career apogee – 2014’s “So Long, See You Tomorrow”, it seemed that the Crouch End foursome had really meant what they said about going on an ‘indefinite hiatus’. Luckily, Messrs. Steadman, MacColl, Saram and Nash appear to have come to their senses to deliver this rollicking follow-up to what was arguably the album of their career. While “Everything Else Has Gone Wrong” doesn’t quite reach the giddy heights of “So Long…” there is plenty to prove the band still have enough tricks up their sleeve. The album’s title track and lead single is the best place to start with its catchy chorus and trademark woozy organs. “I guess I found my peace again/and yes I found my second wind” sings Jack Steadman, indicating that

“Everything Else…” follows a spell of selfdoubt and soul searching. “Let You Go” also seems to come from a place of deep reflection, as does “People People”, but elsewhere there’s plenty of joy. “Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You) and “I Can Hardly Speak” both lift the mood and inject the album with a solid dose of foot-stomping feel-good. Skip through the lacklustre moments – there are only a few – and instead enjoy the return of this most original of indie bands. Even if everything else has gone wrong, it’s great to have Bombay Bicycle Club back. Dan Ashcroft

GIZMOS Nokia 3310 3G Welcoming back the iconic, indestructible and epic battery life phone, that’s right – one of the most popular phones of all time, the Nokia 3310 is back! Nearly two decades later, its return brings a refreshed design and a bunch of upgrades like a colour display, two-megapixel camera and 3G connectivity. While it probably won’t replace your current smartphone, the cost is just over Rp 1 Million and has an insane 22-hour battery life, making it the best backup phone/conversation starter to take to festivals or outdoors. Find out more on nokia.com.

Tamagochi On The retro vibes are making a comeback, and what better way to celebrate it with the return of the Tamagochi! Back in the 90s, all the cool kids had Tamagotchis, tiny eggshaped devices that house virtual animals for you to nurture and keep alive. They have made a massive comeback, boasting a heap of new features such as colour displays and Bluetooth connectivity. Now, your digital pets can do more than just eat, sleep and beep – they can connect with other Tamagotchis, get married and even have kids, giving you the chance to create your very own Tamagotchi dynasty. Get yours for around $59 on tamagotchi.com.

Crosley Cruiser Deluxe Portable Turntable Before Spotify, iTunes and Apple Music, CDs and cassettes, there was vinyl. And with that came the mesmerizing ritual of placing the needle on the groove and sitting back while the music crackled and popped into life. While there is no shortage of turntables out there, the Crosley Cruiser Deluxe gets our vote because of its totally vintage vibe and portable capabilities. With builtin speakers, this bad-boy is the perfect toy to impress anyone, not to mention its Bluetooth receiver, giving you the ability to also play music from your smartphone.
