While local press outlets continue their corona virus scaremongering (while it is already well known that people are more likely to recover from the flu than die from it) and the arrival figures to Bali continue to plateau or head south, you would think it would be gloom and doom all over the island. Strangely enough we haven’t seen much change in the overall nightlife scene in the past week or so. If you check the images on the live photo feed on the Beatlife page, you will see for yourself people are still out in droves. Some places even appear to be busier than ever. So how is this you may ask? Maybe because the people coming to Bali have always been worldly types with so much experience of life that they don’t wear the blinkers worn by other lesser beings, and less travelled. Or maybe they’re just a bunch of bogans that don’t know any better. Well maybe yes, maybe no. But one thing seems to be becoming clearer now. The corona is on the wane. Well, let’s hope so, anyway. There happens to be a lot of events still on the way to the island too and while we are still in the corona affected month of February, we can be grateful that things are still moving along rather nicely – in local entertainment terms, anyway. ShiShi continues to push the envelope and the crowds, appearing to get busier every weekend, which seems to have a knock on effect for that entire street. It was so busy last weekend. Omnia also continues bringing us the big shows and next weekend’s Big Weekend is only the beginning. Read on to find out more. Also check our IG account (@thebeat.bali) and website events page (thebeatbali.com) for all the latest details.

TRIGGER

is a DJ collective based in Jakarta and Bali with a huge celebration coming up — celebrating their 15th year with some of the most prominent DJs in the Indonesian electronic music scene. Starting 15 years ago, the Trigger crew were a true revolution in the Indonesian music scene. What spawned from a fashion label started by the late Raudia Kepper to creating the now famed “Trigger Crew” with each DJ and MC showcasing a different style of music and skill that ended up being recognized globally and establishing their presence and performing in Australia, Malayasia, the Netherlands and all over the Indonesian archipelago. Trigger was founded by some of the most skilled entrepreneurs and DJs on the island – Fadi, Mikey Moran, Stan and Raudia. They currently have 33 DJs and MCs spread across Bali, Jakarta, Bandung and Australia with names like Stan Mamudi, Goodgrip, Stevie Stibbs, WW, Lola Tesca, Justeen, Mahesa Utara, Geramar and Goatee to name a few of the most well-known. The Bali DJs are regulars at clubs like LXXY, Mirror, Shishi, Vault, Lost City, La Favela, Old Mans, The Lawn, Omnia, Café Del Mar and Mexicola so it’s most likely you’ve been listening to their tunes at some point in your partying time in Bali. Here is what Stan had to say about the 15 years in the game – “15 years in the industry here ain’t easy but we made it. 15 years of late nights and wild parties with our DJs that have made you dance the night away. We drank until we dropped with you, made and nurtured friendships with you, shared your birthdays, reunions, celebrations and heartaches with you. Everything we did, we did for You and with You” Their 15th anniversary parties will kick off on Friday, February 28 in Jakarta at Swillhouse & Fable and then Saturday, February 29th at Vault and Mirror in Bali! Make sure to celebrate this momentous occasion with the famed Trigger Crew! And here’s to another 15 years to come! www.thebeatbali.com

Bali Street Mums and Kids Project & Kim Farr

Kim Farr with Jemi and friends

The Beat is helping to promote an event initiated by DJs Dodger and Flex at Lost City this Friday, February 21, to raise funds and awareness of a charity group called Bali Street Mums and Kids Project (BSMK) or Ibu-Ibu on Facebook. The project is doing great things for these street kids and mums, the ones you have seen for years begging for money at the traffic lights around town, kids and mums that needed a helping hand and have found one with BSMK. We thought it would be an opportune moment to find out more about the group and founder Kim Farr. What I quickly realised was that Kim is quite an inspiration. Read on to get the full and moving story. So where are you from and how old are you, Kim? Kim Farr: I am 45 and from New Zealand.

36

www.thebeatbali.com

Tell me about the charity and how you got involved. I have two sons and my younger son and I came to live in Bali five years ago, after selling my business in New Zealand. I started volunteering at a charity for street kids, working with mums and children who were begging on Sunset Road and around Kuta. I taught the mums how to sew and make crafts, providing the street mums with an income so that they did not need to take their children back to the streets to beg. I also worked in the rubbish dump villages with mothers who were so impoverished they would scavenge through piles of fresh rubbish searching for recyclables to sell. They could not feed their children nor pay for schooling. I taught them how to make drinking glasses cut from recycled bottles and they now have a very

FEATURE successful community enterprise, empowering all the mothers who were once trash picking. And all their children now go to school! What motivated you to get involved in this charity work in the first place? I watched a presentation given about the street kids at the Green School then I heard some of the kids’ stories and could not sleep. I wanted to help empower the mothers so as they would not need to take the kids back to the streets to beg again. I also had experience teaching art therapy to children who had been abused back in NZ.

The Safe House.

So how did you get involved in your own charity? After two years the charity where I was volunteering underwent a management change. Funds disappeared and the mums and children were not being treated well. So I decided to start my own foundation....Bali Street Mums and Kids Project. I hired a wonderful Indonesian social worker and child psychologist. We found a house on the edge of the slum area around the Iman Bonjol area of Denpasar, which serves as a refuge, drop-in centre and a place for the children to heal. We have children who have been begging for years on the streets, sold to bosses, abused and molested. There are lots of stories around saying that many of the kids begging on the streets are dropped

off each morning and picked up at night by unscrupulous people trying to make money out of it. Have you seen any reality of that first hand? No, in general they are taken to the streets by their mothers. And their mothers were taken to beg as children also. They are from the mountain villages where there is no water, no schools, no hospitals and no roads. They have very little way of earning an income. So for many years generations of mums and children have come to the urban areas and end up on Sunset Road or around Kuta to beg and take the money back to support their families. And what happens at the project’s safe house? To begin with we provide a “breakfast in the slums” for approx. 40 children each morning. Children who would normally only eat one bowl of rice per day. We taught four of the street mums to cook and we pay them an income to cook healthy breakfasts and meals every day. The other mothers make jewellery and dolls which provides them with an income. We also take all the children to a bridging school. These are children who have been begging for years - some up to 12 years every night on the streets. The bridging school provides them with intensive schooling and gives them the certificate they need in order to attend a formal school. How many children stay at the centre? We have 20 children living at our safe house. Children such as Subur, children who have been sexually assaulted and are Hiv+. The safe house is also a drop-in centre for the rest of the children and a study centre as well as where the mothers meet to make their crafts. Some of the kids, like Subur, who is mentioned above, have had a very hard time of it. Subur was brought up begging and at the age of nine told his parents he did not want to beg anymore. He was humiliated and so they sold www.thebeatbali.com

him to a “boss” who put him to work carrying bricks. He was nine and working 10 hours a day in the hot sun and the boss was paying the parents 40,000 rupiah a day. Are there orphans too? Or the mums stay somewhere else? No orphans. We have six mothers living at the safe house too. And 14 mothers who come each day with their babies and children. Our social worker and child psychologist live at the safe house and make sure the children receive medical needs, schooling, nutrition and counseling. Some days we have up to 50 children at the house. And how is that bridging school? Is it a government or private school? It’s sort of private. There are only two in Bali and it costs Rp350,000 per child each month plus uniforms and transport, food, etc. It means the kids can become part of the system and once they complete bridging school, no matter what age, they can then go to formal school. We have a story of Eka... Eka was begging for 12 years on Sunset Rd. We managed to get him into bridging school 18 months ago and he eventually came second in the Indonesian National Exams! This is a huge achievement for a street kid and the Indonesian Department of Education visited us and pledged to sponsor 10 more children through the bridging school. We just have to cover the transport and meals for those 10 children.

38

www.thebeatbali.com

Well, that’s awesome. How is the condition of the children generally? When they first come in they are suffering malnutrition, exhaustion, stress etc. We see them change, dark rings fading from around their eyes, learning to play and let go, learning to use a pencil for the first time. Smiling and putting on weight. As I said, we have three children who are HIV+. And we need to take them to the hospital every month for care and medication. Where does your funding come from till now? Donations and then we must find sponsors for each child who goes to the bridging school. We have businesses in Bali that help us; The Practice Yoga, Cosmos Oasis, Amo Spa, Biku, Samasti Yoga and Green School. Also Private donors from Australia and New Zealand. How can people get involved or send donations? Yes, please send donations to our paypal. balistreetmums@gmail.com. We also need volunteers to help with schooling or activities. Soccer, dancing or outings, etc. We can be contacted through the same email address. The Lost City event is a celebration of all things hip hop, with a number of top DJs including Dodger and Flex. It is being held on Friday February 21, 2020. Be there by 11pm and proceeds go to Bali Street Mums and Kids Project. Dig deep, give generously.

DJ Story #22 Bali Resident DJs Dan Cook
UK Hi Dan, when did you first become a Bali resident DJ? Since 2014. Tell us your background in music In 1999 I got my first job in a recording studio where I learned the fine art of making cups of tea and how to wrap a mic cable like a pro! .. Soon I was promoted to sound engineer, I learned a lot and worked on some great projects. Then I moved into the label side of business and stated collaborating with major record labels in licensing-distribution, this led me to being offered a regular feature in DJ Mag, where I wrote a monthly tastemaker article. By 2007, I was picking up a lot of DJ work in the London club scene at venues like Ministry of Sound, Pacha, The Egg, The Lightbox. It was a pretty crazy time, juggling a demanding label job with DJ’ing every weekend till the sun came up! .. In 2011, I moved to Thailand and ended up playing at beach clubs for three years. Whilst DJ’ing everyday, I built a music studio and set up a production company composing music for film and TV.

When I landed a big contract to write a soundtrack for a video game I decided to relocate to Bali to concentrate on production; after 6 months of hard work I had finished my project and returned to DJ’ing. Now I’ve been here for over five years and play all over the island. Favourite styles to spin? I love to play all sorts of Balearic stuff. I also play a lot of deep house and disco as well as afro/funk/soul based edits. Current Bali residencies Cafe del Mar, 40 Thieves, Oldmans, Karma Beach, Kilo, Bikini, Azul, Mama San, Billy Ho, Vue. (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” Those sunset moments. Thankyou Dan, see you around the island. LAUNCHES NEW AND LEGENDARY MENU

WHILE DAVID TRAUTS MOSEYS IN FOR A TRY

The Hard Rock Café Bali on Kuta Beach launched a new menu on Valentine’s Day last week and what better day to share the love — of food. It’s the first time in many years the HRC menu has had a major overhaul with the starters and burgers taking the lion share of the changes, but also the addition of fun time Boozy Milkshakes and the overall focus on shareables — plates to be shared with your friends. One stand-out dish, quickly coming into focus on the new menu, was the new 24-KARAT GOLD LEAF STEAK BURGER. You got it, it comes with gold! The 227g Black Angus steak burger,

topped with 24-karat edible gold leaf, served with cheddar cheese, leaf lettuce, vine ripened tomato and red onion comes in at a cool Rp 329++. Rp 20k is donated to Kopernik every time you order one of these so you are also helping the kids in the process! All the burgers have had a super patty recharge which has lifted their burgers to the next level. As Daria, from HRC related, “The Steak Burgers, are created with a proprietary blend of fresh, 100 percent Certified Angus Beef. We are using a new blend of quality Black Angus beef in all our burgers and the new menu features

FOOD our classic Legendary burgers to the all-new shareable sliders.” And let me assure you, the reader, you can very much taste the difference from the first bite. There are also three choices of the sliders for all tastes. Daria then pointed out, “The menu has also become more shareable, since our HRC portions are known to be so huge.” The entire starters range can be shared between your friends. The other night The Beat was visiting to try the new menu and we couldn’t resist sharing the One Night in Bangkok Spicy Shrimp (189k), the vegetarian Three-Cheese & Roma Tomato Flatbread (159k) and the sliders. From the choice of three sliders on the menu, we chose the classic All-American Sliders, consisting of three Black Angus Beef mini steak burgers with melted American cheese, crispy onion ring and creamy coleslaw on a toasted brioche bun. (Rp199). Man, what a tasty burger and a greta selection to share!

sandwiches, salads and full blown main dishes. According to Daria, the new rib eye steak is something to savour. The Cowboy Ribeye is 454g of Grilled Black Angus ribeye topped with herb butter, served with golden mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables. (459k++) Obviously we didn’t have room for this meaty giant on this occasion, but I’m sure we’ll be back again to try some more soon enough. Yes, the new HRC menu has taken the legendary venue’s food offering to the next level. Everything we tried was on-point, full of taste, large portioned and the service and fun times that you get at the Hard Rock Café is just a double bonus.

We then knocked ourselves out with a full rack of pork ribs. The Baby Back Ribs are 800g of the best quality pork ribs, seasoned with the tasty HRC signature spice blend, then glazed with their house-made barbecue sauce and grilled to perfection. It’s served with seasoned fries, coleslaw and ranch-style beans. This comes in at Rp 359k++ and is a riot of taste and meaty barbeque flavours. I loved the ribs. There are a whole bunch of other new dishes on the Hard Rock Café menu including new

We recommend you stick around after dinner, enjoy a scandalously, alcohol infused new Boozy Milkshake, or one of their many delightful desserts and get into the live band as they start cranking it up for another night at The Hard Rock Café. You will thank me later that you did! www.thebeatbali.com

Bistecca Di Rib Eye Da Invecchiamento Secco Ultimo Chef Nyoman Sanjaya

With this edition of Chef’s Recommendation we dined at Seminyak’s iconic Italian restaurant; Ultimo. This foodie destination located on ‘Eat Street’ has been an expat and traveller favourite for over 15 years. As we settled into the al fresco area, Chef Nyoman Sanjaya served a delightful Bistecca Di Rib Eye Da Invecchiamento Secco, priced at Rp 250,000. This dish consists of an imported 250 gram rib eye steak, served with a vibrant butternut squash puree and a medley of sautéed potatoes and vegetables. It’s a definite “Wow” at first bite, with its medium–well tenderness and black pepper sauce that perfects the dish, accompanied by a homegrown glass of red. All in all, another quality dish served by the Ultimo team, rightfully establishing their stand as a Seminyak favorite.

PALI RUMAH JOGLO AUTHENTIC INDONESIAN RESTAURANT

Want to get a feel of the “old” Canggu? You know the time before life here got reduced to being permanently stuck in the infamous shortcut? Well, happy to report there are still nooks and crannies that maintain the Canggu charm from the pre-instagram crazed era. Pali restaurant is definitely one of them. Tucked away on Jl. Padang Linjong and overlooking a stretch of rice paddy, it is housed in a charming, old style Javanese joglo and dishes up the most authentic Indonesian offerings from all over the archipelago. They make Gado-Gado the traditional way – by grounding the peanut paste in a large stone mortar and mixing it up with all the fresh ingredients. Another big draw is the Nasi Campur your way, you can pick your rice, meat or veggies and your desired spice level. Hot tip: visit the resto for a super romantic dinner around full moon when it shines so bright, it literally lights up the surrounding rice paddy. You will forget all about the shortcut when munching on the flavor packed Indonesian staples and discovering new flavors – we recommend you try the Sumatran specialty: cooked cassava leaves in coconut milk broth served in a halved young coco shell.

56

www.thebeatbali.com

One of Javanese culture’s tenets is humbleness. It shows when you enter the joglo, you’ll notice it is built very low, so guests have to bow. It is an expression of respect to the homeowners. The team behind Pali incorporated this philosophy into the settings and culture of Pali. Their menu was intentionally designed for sharing from small to large plates. It is to highlight the togetherness of the Indonesian culture. Pali is a new hot spot for when you want break away from all the crowds and enjoy an authentic dining experience, from the settings to the food, that is always served with the quintessential Indonesian hospitality. Samik is a brainchild of chef Nick and restaurateur Sam — they created an elevated menu, inspired by local produce and spices of the East. They champion small growers, bespoke producers and the region’s unique seasons. These guys do not cut corners here and flavor is king. We’ve been several times and tasted most of the menu and everything we chose was always spot on. Flavorsome, well balanced, fresh and served up by lovely staff. Considering the quality of the ingredients used, it is also extremely good value for money. Such a simple dish as Smashed Avo on Toast was elevated by a mixture of seven spices, a pinch of seasalt and mixed with housemade hummus, served on a fluffy rye toast. Eggs poached to perfection, every detail well thought out. Their nomadic coffee blend definitely deserves a shout out, crafted by one of the most experienced baristas on the island, every cup is brewed to perfection and you can taste all

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

The Universe is on your side in this period so hone your magic arrows and shoot towards your target, the Divine will make sure it hits! Ask for what you want this period, be specific in the item, opportunity or situation, but not in how it is to be received. Listen and look for clues from nature and synchronistic experiences around you. Love is in the air as well as positive business or partnerships. The stars will lend their energy to help you strengthen relationships you may already have or start new ones. Favorable Dates: 26, 1, 6 Favorable Colors: Yellow & Blue

This period will prompt you to actively direct yourselves to take control of your passions and get them working towards some worthy goal, something that matters to you on a soul level. Getting ahold of our ego is part of the challenge, and it can be tough. Be open to signs from the universe directing you, it could be something as simple as being in the right place at the right time, or ‘just for the hell of it’ reading the classifieds and finding something you are destined to have. Either way, just keep an ear out and your eyes open. Favorable Dates : 22, 27, 4 Favorable Colors : Purple & Green

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

This period indicates a time of things being up in the air and a quick change in direction. It is all about manifesting your desires and really going after what you want. If you have been looking to gather new clients or to remodel part of the home this is definitely a good time to start! A new project will bring about a strong motivation for success. You will tackle challenges as they come and not perceive them as obstacles, but relish the idea of a new set of problems to contend with. Favorable Dates: 27, 3, 5 Favorable Colors: Yellow & Red

New possibilities are on the horizon and the power of perseverance is yours for the taking. Be open to what’s unfamiliar and think big. If you’re willing to take some chances and work hard towards your goals, you can hardly go wrong. Be sure to keep your faith and will strong, nothing will be able to stop you. Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

There is a lot for you to celebrate in this period. This period indicates financial growth and indicative of your intention to celebrate a solid and well put together path. It also indicates a good time to get ambitious and not time to sit on your plans but put them into action. You have everything you need to accomplish your great desires. Nature is abundant and will provide for you, every step you take towards your goals. A great time to clear away outmoded and stagnant attitudes while opening up to new ways of seeing yourselves and the world you are living in. Favorable Dates: 25, 2, 4 Favorable Colors: Blue & White

Now is the time to plan in baby steps. A lot of little changes can add up to huge change and make you feel more secure at the same time. So start that planning and take those tiny steps toward your future happiness! Time to get back on track, get off your bum and move ahead with your own plans. However, you may be a little too caught up in material matters and ignoring the emotional things going on around you. If you start exploring, this period also speaks of the possibilities of new love. Favorable Dates: 27, 3, 6 Favorable Colors: White & Green

62

www.thebeatbali.com

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

Your rational mind may be feeling too much pressure to be entirely useful. So listen, very closely, to the voice inside you that is voiceless. And act solely on how you feel. Glide into your passion with flowing movements and an openness to receive. Let yourself go gently into the burning places deep inside. Now is the time to relax and go with the flow, don’t try to force your will. From March, desires will be fulfilled, what this really boils down to is that now is the time to make your wishes and get them realized. Favorable Dates: 28, 4, 6 Favorable Colors: Red & Yellow

There will be some upset and discontent surrounding you. The situation may not have gone as you planned, but do not be discouraged. Right now your focus should be on organization and bringing order to an otherwise chaotic world. Time management is going to be essential for you at this time, you will be clear-headed enough during this time to be able to break up your time without letting your brain make mountains out of small tasks. Do not be surprised if you hit a creative block during the second week of the period. Favorable Dates: 27, 2, 3 Favorable Colors: Blue & Brown

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

You will have a burst of clarity and solutions to some of the issues you’ve been facing will present themselves. You will go after your desires full force. You have control over present situations that you can change them and that ultimately it is up to you. You may feel a little sluggish and just very heavy in second week of the period, a lot of that comes from the stress of multiple projects. Just be sure to take deep breaths and relax once in a while. Favorable Dates: 26, 3, 5 Favorable Colors: White & Yellow

You should be excited about the things around you, should feel enthusiastic and motivated. Now is the time to share your knowledge. People will be asking your advice, opinions and looking to you for guidance. Prepare yourself to take on the roll of mentor or counsellor for those around you. Now is the time to dig deeper and really meditate on emotional issues that you haven’t dealt with in a while. Swim in your ocean, deeply and fully. Be true to yourself with unwavering strength. Favorable Dates: 28, 3, 6 Favorable Colors: Blue & White

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

The period lends its energies to you, helping you to make wise decisions and understand Universe’s ultimate goal. This is a time to use your intuition and expect to be learning some unusual things! You may have a little too much on your plate, now is the time to get rid of some excess activities so that you don’t feel so overwhelmed. If single, you have spotted soft and graceful appearance of love in your life. Sit with it and let it move you. And most especially, keep this all a magical secret, wrapped and protected, until you are completely transformed. Favorable Dates: 25, 29, 5 Favorable Colors: Blue & Yellow

Now is the time to form friendships, partnerships and of course relationships! If you are already in a relationship you will find that this is a great time to reconnect with your lover! Take pleasure in giving and receiving and don’t be shy to tell people how much they mean to you. You’ll probably be surprised by how much they love you back. CD REVIEW

Saturday night fever

Tame Impala The Slow Rush On his fourth studio album as Tame Impala, one-man-band Kevin Parker has completed the move away from straight-up psychedelic rock to something much more disco rooted. 2015’s “Currents” hinted at a more polished sound, but here on “The Slow Rush” there’s barely a trace of the kind of stoner-rock vibes that characterized his earlier work. The entire album is largely devoid of any guitars, and the vocals have morphed into the realm of spacey falsettos and sampled harmonies. Instead, Parker has ramped up the use of phased loops, fuzzed-out synths and lashings of reverb on whatever he’s got plugged in to the valve amp via his laptop, all to achieve the effect of a distinctly modern sounding retro homage. Case in point; current single “Lost in Yesterday” owes more to the breezy disco of The Bee Gees

than any groovy rock bands of the 70s. Parker even name-checked the brothers Gibb as the inspiration behind the album – something he hit upon during a particularly out there ‘trip’ in L.A. “Breathe Deeper” is an easy funk roll with runs of twinkly piano, and “Glimmer” is essentially a retro-house track. “Is It True” seems made for throwing shapes on a dance floor – particularly if it’s Saturday night and you’re wearing a slightytoo-tight white suit with massive lapels. At 34, Parker is no longer the musical outsider from Perth, and has been well and truly embraced by the mainstream. That he’s still not afraid to step beyond the parameters of what Tame Impala fans expect is something that should be applauded. Dan Ashcroft
