The Bali high season is starting with a bang in June with a load of major acts and shows coming our way starting right this weekend. This Friday and Saturday night kicks off with the A-Club in Denpasar celebrating their grand opening over two nights with a progressive feast headed by Stadium’s DJ Bobby on the Friday and German DJ/producer Sabastien Krieg on the Saturday. There are many more DJs, dancers and shows involved on those two nights and since we have been frequenting the venue recently and been having a right royal old time while there, we can guarantee it will be a big weekend. Klapa also has a bunch of Indonesian star DJs lining up for their Neverland show on Friday, while Mint will not disappoint with DJ Marc Romboy, and Sky Garden’s Fashion Friday with Body and Soul could be a load of fun. Next Wednesday brings the FHM Road Show to Pyramid where the girls are competing for grand prizes and the glory of being an FHM gal. There’s sure to be loads of entertainment during the night. Next Thursday is the big one and I wonder if the agents should have been talking amongst themselves because we have a massive double up of Dash Berlin doing a charity show at Hard Rock Sand Island and another Dutch star DJ, Ferry Corsten in Boshe on June 13. Toss a coin on those ones if you get confused. Sky Garden’s University night on Thursdays is also huge event every week where they give away a motorcycle to a lucky guest. Friday, June 14 is another rocking night with Daft Punk cohort, DJ Falcon at Hu’u Bar and female DJ duo sensation, DJ Kimkat at Hypnotized in Beachwalk. Now this club is also pulling them in so that will also be well worth a look. The annual I’m an Angel charity dinner and show is back again on Saturday June 15 at KuDeTa which is always a great local community outing. Mint has another big international DJ guest in Robert Babicz the same night. To top things off Australian trance diva Emma Hewitt will be performing at A-Club on Tuesday June 18. I saw her last weekend open her Indonesian tour in Illigals, Jakarta and it’s a show trance world aficionados can’t afford to miss. So keep your hats on folks, the high season is starting now in Bali. We hope you enjoy the ride.

The mermaid sculpture, funded by the Body Shop Indonesia, is conceptualized by Celia Gregory of the Marine foundation and brought to life by Balinese artist Wayan Winten. It aims to address the issue of coral reef degradation as well as to raise awareness of the pressing need to protect the health of our oceans. The Marine foundation is looking for more environmentally aware artists and businesses to collaborate with on the program in order to further expand Art for Ocean installations, events and activities.
RIMBA JIMBARAN BALI TO OPEN SEPTEMBER 2013 The award-winning Ayana Resort and Spa Bali is preparing for the next phase of its evolution with the upcoming opening of sister hotel Rimba Jimbaran Bali. Under the same management of Capella Hotel Group, Rimba Jimbaran Bali will open in September with 297 rooms and suites to expand on Ayana’s 368 rooms and villas. The eight-hectare resort is located within Ayana’s 77-hectare grounds overlooking Jimbaran Bay. Guests of both Ayana and Rimba will experience seamless service as they enjoy the best of both worlds: Rimba with its forest ambience and Ayana’s unrivaled ocean-front setting. With its unique facilities and design, Rimba complements Ayana, providing guests with two unique hotels to explore and two very different experiences to enjoy.
Road to Soundrenaline at LAPANGAN MERTASARI Rock festival Soundrenaline will celebrate its 11th year in existence with the theme ‘A Journey of Rock Harmony’ and will feature many of Indonesia’s best rock bands including Pas Band, Noah, Netral, /rif, Koil, and Superman is Dead. Two legendary bands will also take part; Dewa 19 which will feature its former vocalist Ari Lasso, and Potlot Jamming (Slank featuring BIP). Before the main event in Jogja on June 29, the Road to Soundrenaline will be held in Denpasar on June 15 with an assortment of bands. The line-up for the Bali concert is still not clear, but expect local boys Superman is Dead and other assorted bands to be present for the Lapangan Mertasari concert.

SCOOP Bali Safari park welcomes two baby Bengal tigers. Bali Safari and Marine Park in Gianyar has announced its two baby Bengal tigers, bred by the zookeepers, are ready to be displayed this month. The breeding program is carefully supervised and each of the resident tigers is checked to ensure it is of good genetic stock and is not related to the others, in order that inbreeding does not occur. Bengal tigers are the most common of the tiger sub-species. There were once eight sub-species but three are now extinct, the Bali, Javan and Caspian tiger. The two cubs have yet to be given names but these will be based on their individual characteristics. Recently Taman Safari and its Bali park welcomed four meerkats and a baby elephant to its collection and last year invited world experts to set up a rhino breeding and insemination program.
25-metre Buddha to be unveiled at Gilimanuk Indonesia’s tallest Buddha statue, located at Vihara Empu Astapaka, Gilimanuk, Jembrana, Bali, was inaugurated on June 6. The 25-metre-tall Buddha was unveiled on Waisak Santhuti Citta 2557. The statue took over a year to build and costed over Rp. 1 billion. This statue will be a new icon for Bali since its design is distinctively Indonesian
Another Excellent Achievement of The Bali 1O1 Legian The Bali 1O1 Legian received the honour to bring home the 2013 Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence. What makes it an even more rewarding award, is that this honour is only awarded to the top ten percent of the hospitality businesses and establishments worldwide. The Bali 1O1 Legian’s constant effort in providing a smart stylish experience for each and every customer that comes through the door indeed deserves this annual prestigious award. This can only mean one thing, that the guests have always been satisfied by the services that The Bali 1O1 Legian has to offer and it’s reflected as the many good reviews and ratings found on the hotel’s page on Trip Advisor. www.beatmag.com

Marc Romboy
friday june 7
Roots
Back in 1992, whilst studying medicine, Marc Romboy became fascinated by the early techno and house records on R&S, Plus 8 and Underground Resistance and decided to start producing himself. Hailing from Moenchengladbach, Germany, Romboy and his buddy Klaus Derichs founded their own label Le Petit Prince in 1994. The label quickly became one of Germany’s most popular underground outputs, with Groove magazine charting it as the second most popular label in 1995. Around the same time he formed Le Petite Prince, Romboy also began DJing, frequently playing at the Techno parties around Dusseldorf and making his festival debut at the Tribal Gathering in Munich in 1994.
Sounds
Tech house, techno
Where you might have heard THEM
Romboy began his second label Systematic in 2004, with the first release ‘Every Day In My Life’. So far he has collaborated on the label with such high profiled artists as Booka Shade or Blake Baxter and signed tracks and mixes from producers like Martin Landsky, John Dahlbaeck, Olaf Poszgay, Phonique, Jence and Abysm whilst also releasing EP’s from Robert Owens, Stephan Bodzin, Gui Borrato, Spirit Catcher and Dusty Kid. Romboy also released his debut artist album Gemini on the label in 2006 to great critical acclaim. After only a couple of releases Romboy has already managed to put his own stamp on the international club scene as a label-manager, producer and DJ. Nothing can stop this Teutonic boogie machine.
Why see THEm
Mr. Marc Romboy knows what is up. Being in the music biz for over a decade, co-founding and building an internationally respected dance-music label and projects, he seems like a solid contender for your attention. See him live at Mint on June 7!

Sebastian Krieg
saturday june 8
Roots
Sebastian Krieg is German DJ, producer and remixer. Sebastian himself is a Munich-based and half-French artist. Since he was young, his youth version of his has started producing and aspired to become a DJ. His career has been dominated and influenced by all sorts of music of famous musicians like Bob Marley, David Bowie and Eric Prydz.
Sounds
Progressive house, house.
Where you might have heard THEM
Apart from discovering the gratifying world of night clubs alone, Sebastian more often than not plays gig with his co-mate – Roman Freihoff, another Munich DJ under the name Shik Stylkø or Shik Stylko, and then he is also in Aerosoul (2) project with his buddy, another Munich DJ - Jerome Isma-Ae having produced a 12” entitled “Rumors” in 2003. Before that collaboration, Sebastian hit the stores with his tracks co-produced with Werner Niedermeier (in K & N Project), with his brother, Marcel Krieg (in T.K. Bros). It might come as a surprise that Sebastian took the German EDM scene by storm with his two tracks under the name Búzios – Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser (2001) and When I Close My Eyes (2002). His recent fans-winning track called “REI” on PinkStar Records in July 2011, accelerated his stardom as one of the top Germany’s progressive house maestro around to date. The full-of-suspense track topped many house and progressive house charts and was included in Tiësto’s and David Guetta’s playlists. 2011 also saw his trance remix of Mark Knight and Funkagenda’s “Antidote” getting a big applause by DJ Marcus Schulz. Those tracks mentioned above are just some of the great sounds Sebastian has in his playlist, wait till you listen to remarkable “Brooklyn”, “Seduction”, and “Wherever” in which he had the Croatian EDM singer-songwriter, Natalie Peris. His other capability of remixing can use great artists like Nadia Ali, Daniel Portman, Mark Knight, Robbie Rivera, and EDX as references. His beyond-doubt competence to rock the dance floor has made him a regular (aka resident) DJ in Pacha Munich while also being invited to set places as far as Antigua, Tel Aviv and London in a euphoric state. Sebastian has also had live shows in one of the best global club – Amnezia, Ibiza.
Why see THEm
Sebastian is one of most sought-after remixes currently, however, at clubs; whether big or small, punters can expect him to play his originals. Hence, if you guys love pure house music, then set your party date to be June 8, when Sebastian is making the headline at A-Club.

Ferry Corsten
thursday june 13
Roots
Corsten started his career performing self-composed music live in his native country Holland. His first studio production arrived in 1991 when he produced the embryonic rave track ‘Spirit of Adventure’. In 1995, under the name Hole In One and just 21 years old, he won the prestigious De Grote Prijs van Nederland award, which recognized his outstanding contribution to Holland’s electronic dance music scene.
Sounds Trance
Where you might have heard him
Demand to see the man behind the music had quickly placed Corsten behind turntables. He fast established a reputation for impassioned floor-igniting sets, which engaged and delighted an ever-expanding group of fans. From smashing the earliest trance scene events (inc. Innercity, Trance Energy and Dance Valley), there’s now not a metropolis on Earth that Corsten’s not rocked and re-rocked. He entered DJ Magazine’s Top 100 poll in the first year of voting and, as of 2011 has enjoyed an incredible unbroken 12-year run in the chart. He won Best Trance DJ at both the 2005 and 2007 Ibiza Awards and in the same year was named DJ of the Year by Dutch national radio station Slam!FM. Midway through 2007 Ferry launched Corsten’s Countdown, his radio show platform. Each week, for the last five years, listeners have ranked the 10 tracks Ferry plays via the show’s website and his Facebook Fan Page. To top it all off Ferrys latest album WKND which was released on February 24, 2012 was a full on success.
Why see THEm
He’s the man that singlehandedly initiated a revolution in a dance music genre - one that’s long since touched every corner of the globe. He is the man that you don’t want to miss! He will be playing at Boshe on the June 13.

Thursday june 13 Sand Island @ Hard Rock hotel effrey Sutorius started DJing back in 1995 in his home town of The Hague, Holland. In 2007 he teamed up with other producers, Eelke Kalberg and Sebastiaan Molijn to form the trance collective, Dash Berlin. They have had major hits all over the world since then including their breakthrough single “Till the Sky Falls Down” and have won many international awards. In 2010, Dash Berlin was nominated for the Best European DJ at the International Dance Music Awards and entered the DJ Mag Top 100 poll at number 15.They are now sitting at number 7. Without doubt, Dash Berlin is one of the biggest dance music acts doing the rounds and The Beat’s David Trauts had the chance to have a chat with Jeffrey before he arrived to play at the Hard Rock Hotel’s Sand Island this week.
Did you ever think in the record store you were What‘s behind the name Dash Berlin, where did working in as a young man that you would make it come from? it this far in dance music? It came from the Love Parade in Berlin back when No, not really. I wasn’t aiming for it. It just happened spontaneously in the record shop where I made friends who were making music and I started making music with them. I was already a DJ at that time though and just into the music.
Is the lifestyle now what you imagined it to be back then?
As I said I never planned anything or imagined myself sitting down here talking to you or flying around the world, making music and performing in front of thousands of people. It’s something I never imagined at all.
When did that first begin?
It skyrocketed after we first released “Till the Sky Falls Down” and Armin van Buuren began supporting it everywhere which was the starting point for Dash Berlin. Everybody’s like “Who’s Dash Berlin and who made this song?” And at that point we were already working on new music and remixes and we created our own label with Armada called Aropa Records and now that’s where I make all my new singles and support new talent.

I played there in 2000. I remember vividly, it was a beautiful day with one million people following all the trucks in the center of Berlin playing all forms of dance music; techno, house, progressive and everybody was having a great time, dancing, listening to the music, making new friends. I climbed up a light pole and had a fantastic view over Berlin and I thought to myself, okay, I want to do something with Berlin in my DJ name and so later I started searching in Google two word combinations with Berlin and typed in Dash Berlin and nothing came up and I thought that’s really catchy, I’ll take that.
It always seems to be you on stage as Dash Berlin. What happened to the other two guys?
I am Dash Berlin. We make music together as a team. They don’t really like to be in the spotlight. They are just great studio wizards and I still learn so much with them every time we get in the studio, even though I have a really hectic touring schedule right now. I finish off the projects in the studio with them and we do a lot over the internet which is so easy nowadays. I like to travel, I like to DJ, I’m the man in the spot.
herenow What was the best show for you over the past and played with orchestras. I’ve never done that. As far as Dash Berlin goes with classical influences, that’s year? I would have to say that the ‘A State of Trance’ (ASOT) shows have always made a big impact on me. They are true highlights of the year in the way they are listened to by millions of people around the world, both attending the parties and online. Besides that there are so many great parties to choose from, I’m such a happy camper. I’m so fortunate to get the opportunity to play shows like Electric Zoo in New York, or in Russia in some crazy locations, or Stereosonic in Australia. It’s a great time to be a DJ.
Are they all huge shows?
It varies. For me personally, it’s not important if the show is big or small. It’s all about the atmosphere and the crowd, that’s where I get my inspiration.
Would there be more atmosphere in a small or big gig? In a small venue the atmosphere seems to be more touchable. The crowd is standing right in front of you and they can almost touch you. On the other hand, when you are playing a huge venue with an enormous crowd and they are all waving together and it’s going up and down, and everybody is focussed on the music, that’s great too. So that’s why I would never make a comparison between the two.
Speaking of the crowds and DJs playing to the crowd, do you change your repertoire as you go thru a set to suit them?
Yes, my base will always be Dash Berlin, my own productions, my own remixes and my own Dash-ups, my name for mash-ups. I will always do that because I get so many requests from people to play those tracks. In the end I play for the people, and I’m there to entertain the people. I’m not there for myself, being cool and wanting to show how good a music selector I am. I’m there for the crowd. Besides that, I always have a lot of new unreleased material I try to put in my sets.
What do you think is the most important thing about being a good DJ? I think it’s always important to work with the crowd. I think for every DJ it’s also important to play from your heart. It’s important and everyone can see it. That’s the best advice I can give anyone.
just a coincidence maybe. I think trance as a genre of music is able to hold a lot of emotion in the sounds. It’s really difficult to say why trance is so good for that but I think it’s because of the melody and it has enough space to build in something emotive which is also similar in classical compositions.
You work with a lot of singers. Which one do you think fits best with what you are doing?
Well, it’s not what I think but what the crowd thinks and we’ve had a lot of great feedback to all the vocalists we have worked with. A lot of people wanted to know who the voice was behind “Till the Sky Falls Down” and “Janeiro”, which was Vera and nobody really knows her. She was a big influence on Dash Berlin when we started. Besides her we also receive a lot of feedback working with Emma Hewitt, who’s incredibly talented and great to work with but let me say for the record, every vocalist that we have worked with I totally admire and really look up to.
Who writes your tracks and the lyrics etc?
That depends. We don’t really have a working schedule. Sometimes we start off with a beat and we try to fit something around it, a vocal or sound. Other times we have something written and we have to work around that, or we have a melody part that we have to build a beat around. So there’s not any specific work strategy in creating our music.
So how about the lyrics, do you write them or someone else? That depends too. Sometimes we write them or the vocalist, or sometimes we find them somewhere. There’s no fixed way we do it.
Who are some upcoming vocal trance DJ producers to look out for?
In these parts I would say LTN. There’s also a talented producer coming from Russia called Alexander Popov. There are lot of guys from Russia who are extremely talented. I signed a girl/guy duo recently called Rave Channel. Arty is another producer doing really well. There is just so much talent out there, I can only name a few but there are so many.
What’s coming up this year for Dash Berlin?
Quite a lot. We are working on a lot of new material
What is the best definition of your music? What but I can’t say much about names and collaborations would you call it? just yet but I will be trying some of those at Hard Rock An emotive uplifting painting.
and I’m really looking forward to see what the reaction is from the crowd.
Music like yours and Armin van Buuren’s for example features a lot of classical music in the After playing sold out Armin van Buuren ‘ASOT’ shows mix. How do you think this came about? Do you earlier this year, and coming off the back of touring the guys listen to a lot of classical music? US, Europe, Asia and just in Australia, Dash Berlin can be I can’t talk for Armin. I know he has done classic reworks

DJ Falcon
friday june 14
Roots
DJ Falcon was born in France as StéphaneQuême in France a very long time ago. His past is shrouded in mystery and not much is known about his childhood. He came from an artistic family with his cousins Alan Braxe (Stardust, Vulture) and Delphine Queme (Bureau Records) being in the music industry. He started off as a photographer, but then delved into the world of the DJ and was thus turned into the man we know today. But we digress. Before being a producer, Falcon was an A&R man for Virgin Records. His debut release, “Hello My Name Is DJ Falcon” and his remix of Cassius’ “La Mouche” propelled him to the limelight.
Sounds
Electro, House, Rock
Where you might have heard THEM
DJ Falcon is the name behind such dance floor hits as “So Much Love to Give” and “Together”, which he co-produced with Thomas Bangalter from Daft Punk. A member of the French touch generation of DJs, he has contributed several remixes for such artists as Phoenix and Cassius (La Mouche). For the past ten years Stephen has toured the globe with the Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Kitsune and his friends from Ed Banger Records. As a DJ, he has presented his lively musical sets at big name clubs around the world including Fabric in London, REX in Paris, as well as Pacha and Privilege in Ibiza just to name a few. Since 2010, Falcon is a resident at the Social Club in Paris and has recently remixed Justice’s single “New Lands” (2012), Alex Gopher’s single “Hello” (2012) and Alan Braxe’s single “Time Machine” (2013). This year, he was featured on Daft Punk’s fourth studio album, Random Access Memories on the last track “Contact”.
Why see THEm
If you like that funky French sound made popular by Daft Punk and Justice, you’ll be quite impressed with this guy. The bubbly light sounds mixed in with solid bass lines with a tart layering of poppy beats is just about as delightful as anything the French have ever made.

Emma Hewitt
tuesday june 18
Roots
There are very few voices that are instantly recognizable as that of Australian born singer, Emma Hewitt. Her journey began in the Australian town of Geelong, Victoria where Emma used to perform acoustically around the region through her teenage years. Her first few songs led to an early record deal with Sony Music for her project ‘Missing Hours’. The relationship was brief but provided Emma with an invaluable insight into the music industry, setting the stage for things to come.
Sounds
Vocals, electronic dance music.
Where you might have heard her
Emma’s big break came when she teamed up with Chris Lake, they yielded the worldwide smash ‘Carry Me Away’ knocking Britney Spears out of the #1 position on the U.S Billboard Chart (Hot Dance Airplay) going on to spend over 50 weeks in the Top 100. From there, Emma teamed up with German icons Cosmic Gate for the classic anthem ‘Not Enough Time’ and Dutch superstar DJ Dash Berlin for the mega hit, ‘Waiting’. ‘Waiting’ firmly cemented Emma Hewitt’s reputation as a serious international talent earning Hewitt many accolades including a #1 on the Global Trance Charts, #2 on the illustrious A State Of Trance Annual Countdown. A string of #1 Beatport releases followed throughout a particularly fertile period in 2010 and with a wealth on new material, a new record label in Armada Music and a desire to push the creative envelope, Hewitt undertook the extraordinary measure of producing her debut artist release as a double album project. An extensive touring schedule throughout 2012 included sold out solo performances right across the globe in over 25 countries as well as appearances on the major EDM festival circuit around the world where Hewitt is often known to leave the stage, microphone in hand, to join the revelers in the arena below.
Why see THEm
Emma Hewitt’s enthusiasm and relationship with her audience is something to behold as she takes the stage, she will be performing at A-club on June 18 as part of an Indonesian tour that will take her to 14 cities around the country. Make sure you don’t miss this one!

His
very existence brings with it the hope that Bali, musically speaking, still has a big, bright future. His unique approach to composing songs has awoken legions of local youth to the idea that being indie does not always mean being a try-hard or, for punk’s sake, that you have to be punk. His band, Nosstress, inks Bali fair and square on Indonesia’s indie subculture map. Guna Warma, otherwise known as Kupit, is here to tell you what time it is (oh, and he can fix your computer if you need him too). How long have you been into singing? Has getting up on stage always been your thing, since you were a kid? When I was still in primary school, I was one of those kids who was forever wanting to get up and sing in front of their class and for me, that’s a pretty good example of me wanting to get up on stage from the very start! It’s my nature. My family aren’t really artsy types, so there’s no artsy bloodline thing. And maybe because of this, I was, musically speaking, more of a late bloomer. I grabbed hold of my first guitar when I was in senior high school and then started a band, a typical teenager kind of thing and
90
www.beatmag.com
it was really just for fun. Things got serious after I finished high school when a friend of mine asked me to establish an acoustic band with him. From this point I began to take music seriously, and set out to learn how to play guitar and sing. Then we began gigging around universities, birthdays, weddings, and even kids’ circumcision events. The more gigs I did, the better I understood about performance. It’s true what they say, that practice makes perfect. That acoustic band, it evolved into Nosstress? Yeah, Crocourt Acoustic was the embryo of Nosstress. Back in 2006 there were seven of us, but after a few years only three of us remained; me, Cok and Angga. By the time 2008 came along, the three of us had started playing regularly at Bali Seamens Club and a few other bars around Sanur. I think it was around this time that we’d started to use Nosstress as our name, formally. But I, we, can’t really remember the exact date Nosstress was born. The following year we began slowly introducing our own original materials. We were hanging out with this music based non-profit organisation, One Dollar for Music, and a young socio-political think tank, Komunitas Taman 65, at the time and we were learning a lot from those
FEATURES
guys about music and social issues. Finally, in 2011, Antida Studio helped us to record our full-length debut album. Nostress is one of Bali’s few extremely talented bands, you’ve got a solid fan-base and you seem to always be getting invited to play at big and important events. Personally, are you happy with what you’ve achieved? Honestly speaking, no, not really, there are still too many dreams that haven’t come true. But, hey, that’s life, right? Things don’t always go as you wish. I don’t think it’s wise to complain and I don’t want to go on about it, I just want to put things in perspective. My music career hasn’t been easy and has never been easy. My family hasn’t really given me the kind of support that I need. I haven’t been overly successful in convincing them with regard to choosing music as my life path. But I’ve gotten this far: the audience happily sings along with us during our shows, we’re constantly gigging here and there-not only in Bali, but Java, too, and even around Southeast Asia. I’m so proud of this, and that our tunes are frequently on the radio’s heavy rotation.
Do you have other side music projects? Sing solo? Nope, there’s no such thing as a side music project yet. I have been invited to perform as a solo artist a few times, but I still sing Nosstress songs. Outside of Nosstress, I teach guitar, occasionally give workshops at One Dollar for Music, or fix computers (you might not know but, in between the music, I’m a graduate in computer tech). Other than that, I just play guitar and drink coffee. What’s next? A new album? It’s been a while since you guys released Perspektif Bodoh. We’ve planned to release our second album this year. I’ll keep you updated! Oh, also, not very long ago, we uploaded “Ini Judulnya Belakangan”, a song about the condition and expectation of Bali, the island that we live in. Before we uploaded it to YouTube, no one had seen or heard the song before. Any last nagging words? Kick back and relax. Do that sometimes, it’s good for self-healing. No stress. www.beatmag.com

The Man of Steel, an Anti-Gravity Love, and a Fearless Adventure
by: pande
This June, we bring to you three movies right from the box office database. First, we have the Man of Steel back on the big screen after quite a long hiatus. Then, in Upside Down, we have Adam relentlessly trying to meet Eden in a so-called wonderland called Up. Last but not least, another post-apocalyptic adventure with Jaden and Will Smith at the main roles. Want to know in greater detail? See for yourself at www.21cineplex.com or get it on DVD!
Man of Steel Action, Adventure, Fantasy. Director: Zack Snyder. Writer: David S. Goyer (screenplay and story), Christopher Nolan (story), Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster (creators of Superman character). Cast: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne.
Batman had a pretty awesome reboot and the last Superman isn’t even worth an honorable mention, but looking at the trailer of this newest addition gives me hope for the future of the man of steel. We all know that Superman is Clark Kent (Henry Cavill), an alien from the planet Krypton raised in middle America to become a mild mannered reporter. We all know he’s in love with Lois Lane (Amy Adams). But put this into play, Christopher Nolan (the guy who worte and directed the latest Batman trilogy) did the story and Zach Snyder (the guy who directed 300 and Watchmen) if running the show. Excited? You should be.
Upside Down Drama, Fantasy, Romance, Sci-Fi. Director: Juan Diego Solanas. Writer: Juan Diego Solanas. Cast: Jim Sturgess, Kirsten Dunst, Timothy Spall, Jayne Heitmeyer.
Love knows no boundaries, but what if that boundary is the gravity… This is what happens to the love of Adam (Jim Sturgess) and Eden (Kirsten Dunst) who live on two twin planets with opposite gravities. They are aptly called Up and Down. Through working in the trans world, the only place that links the two planets, Adam and Eden are able to meet each other. Physics aside, like all science fiction, it has a pretty cool concept which seems to explore borders and economic issues that serve to divide us. The movie seems to touch on the subject of immigration, which most Bali residents are pretty familiar with.
After Earth Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi. Director: M. Night Shyamalan. Writer: Gary Whitta (screenplay), M. Night Shyamalan (screenplay), Will Smith (story). Cast: Jaden Smith, Will Smith, Isabelle Fuhrman, Sophie Okonedo, Zoë Isabella Kravitz.
The General of a peacekeeping organization based in Nova Prime, Cypher Raige (Will Smith) sets out on his last voyage as a general accompanied by his son, Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith). After asteroids collide with their ship, they crash-land on Earth. With Cypher’s legs broken following the crash, Kitai is the only hope for the both of them to send a SOS signal through a beacon at the tail section of the spaceship. The young Kitai is forced to confront his fear to fight mutant predators on Earth and the belligerent Ursas that can sense one’s fears. This movie was panned by critics for the wooden acting that Will Smith couldn’t even save. If you’re familiar with M. Night Shyamalan, you know this is probably going to be a loser.

www.beatmag.com
For a songwriter as prolific as Josh Homme it seems odd that six whole years have passed since the last Queens of the Stone Age LP Era Vulgaris was released. Roll back a few more years to the mid noughties, and the bequiffed king of Californian stoner rock could usually be found munching peyote with PJ Harvey in the Joshua Tree desert (The Desert Sessions) or co founding other bands (Eagles of Death Metal), but he’d always find the time to churn out a QOTSA album or two in the meantime. So why the long hiatus? Like Clockwork took Homme three of those six years to record, mostly down to a constantly changing lineup and an ever-expanding cast of guest stars, but also I suspect due to the heightened maturity and altogether more measured approach that the 40 milestone often brings to recording artists. As a result, …Like Clockwork feels dense and focused, delivering a clutch of razor sharp tunes that showcase all the best facets of Homme’s songwriting; groovy, creepy and earsplitting all at once. Crucially, long-time cohort Dave Grohl is back on drum detail for the lion’s share of the record, providing the backbone for Homme to build his trademark muscular riffs and subtly sinister vocals around – best demonstrated on first single “My God is the Sun” and “Smooth Sailing”. The measured, fuzzy bassline of curtain raiser “Keep Your Eyes Peeled” feels like a lion stalking its prey, and the whacked-out groove of “I Sat By The Ocean” is as good as anything on 2002 watershed Songs For The Deaf. The familiar whiskey soaked vocals of erstwhile Screaming Trees bandmate Mark Lanegan pop up on “If I Had a Tail” and “Fairweather Friends”, which also features a certain Mr. Reg Dwight (Sir Elton John to you and me,) on ivory tinkling duty. Other guest appearances range from northern monkey Alex Turner and super producer Trent Reznor on “Kalopsia” to a smattering of backup vocals from Homme’s wife and Spinnerette frontwoman Brody Dalle. “One thing that is clear/it’s all downhill from here” we’re told on the title track and album closer “…Like Clockwork”, and at times the darkness of it all feels a touch overbearing. However, it’s hard to nitpick such a heartfelt and personal effort - maybe not quite the feel good hit of the summer, but a career milestone for Homme & co. nonetheless. Dan Ashcroft

This is the b ri e fc a se - si ze d electric unicycle that keeps a rider perfectly balanced at all times with gyroscopic sensors. Equally suited for urban commuting and suburban recreation, the unicycle requires a rider to merely stand on its two folding feet pads; gyroscopic sensors detect a rider’s subtle feet movements while accounting for a shoulder-slung backpack or bag for its center-of-mass calculations. Gripping the handlebar and leaning forward results in steady acceleration without jolting, while leaning backwards brings the unicycle to a slow, steady stop. A rider controls side-to-side balance and turning with subtle leaning. The unicycle’s 500-watt electric motor propels a 160-lb. rider up to two hours at 13 mph with a three-hour charge of its built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Housed within a sturdy ABS case, the motor spins the cycle’s single 16” diameter wheel that extends only 4” from the case, so pant legs won’t snag. Its knobby tire grips surfaces while providing minimal rolling resistance for smooth rides. www.hammacher.com $2,700 www.beatmag.com

SURF
T
he 2012 Indonesian and Asian surfing champion Raditya Rondi from Bali is back in top form, winning the ASC 4-Star West Java Surfing Championship in head-high (sometimes bigger) Cimaja on June 2 over Sandi Selamet (West Java), Komang Sujaya(Bali) and Mega Semadhi (Bali). After missing the season opening Mentawai event due to a knee injury, Raditya has not completely rehabbed the injury but was able to bounce back enough to compete at Cimaja and win in a knee brace with his trademark vicious backhand attack. “I’m not 100% and still feel some pain in my knee, and I didn’t surf for over two weeks except for a five minute surf yesterday, and today I did a full day surf so I think I just got lucky. I did use a bit longer board and just waited for the big sets. I usually ride a 5’7 but this is a 5’10 Akaba board, the same one I won Scar Reef on,” said a stoked Raditya just after winning the Final and Rp 10 million (about US$1,000). With the win Raditya is now 12th on the ASC rankings and looking forward to the next event, the Oakley Bali Pro Trials that are coming up in Bali from 14-17 June. The ASC is an open tour, and the West Java Surfing Championship saw competitors come from Japan, Taiwan, France, Malaysia, the USA and Indonesia competing in the event. In the Women’s Division, it would be one of the international surfers that would emerge victorious with Rina Katazawa taking the win with a solid lead over the other girls in the Final. Coming virtually out of nowhere onto the ASC tour and almost missing her first heat yesterday, Rina was consistently catching

the biggest sets and smoothly combining maneuvers all the way to the cobblestone shoreline in each of her heats. “I started surfing six years ago when I was 13 in Japan and I have fun competing in contests. This event I just got lucky and got really good waves. I’m looking forward to the next ASC event in Bali at Balangan and I would love to be champion!” said a fired up Rina. Cimaja is always a favorite stop on the ASC Tour due to the friendly nature of the laid-back beach town and consistent good surf that breaks there. As the awards ceremony came to a close and good-byes were said, another chapter of Cimaja surfing closed and was set in everyone’s memory banks. ART
yoman Erawan is a multi media artist who is renowned for his dynamic exploration of media in his work that goes far beyond only painting on canvases.
Born in 1958 in Sukawati; the centre recognized for art development in Bali, Erawan was brought up in a family and community strongly rooted in Balinese Hindu values and customs. Naturally artistic, Nyoman further developed his talents while first studying at SMSR Fine Arts School in Bali where he then continued studying at the Indonesian Art Institute in Yogyakarta. Erawan’s works are a combination of his engagement and understanding of modern art over the years and his customary values from his childhood within the cultural community life in Bali. It is through Nyoman’s use of visual elements, textures and symbols from Balinese traditions in his abstract work that he connects with people and gives messages of introspection. You can see Erawan’s latest solo exhibition currently being held at Komaneka Fine Art Gallery, Monkey Forest Road, Ubud, Bali. T 0361 4012217

FEATURES I will state for the record that the author of this post, being me, is a single mother, and I know many, both western and Balinese, but even I was floored by the statistic. Balinese households are different in some respects but the same in lots of fundamental ways. I have met plenty of girls who have “married” Balinese boyfriends. Married in name; often with plenty of free time on their hands as the woman at home, who doesn’t understand them, can’t have children, or whatever, is working, cleaning and rearing the kids, and often taking care of his parents as well. I know lots of successful Balinese men too, but in some ways, these are modern specimens, who are better educated and more western in their ways. Balinese women traditionally do the hard labour, and like their western counterparts, also do most of the at home work as well.
“A Change gonna come…”
sang the legendary Sam Cooke, and looking around you’ve got to admit he has a point. The changes occur on all kinds of levels, and an article I read the other day got me thinking about love and romance, in Bali and beyond. Mastin writes in his Daily Love post: “A record 40% of all households with children under the age of 18 include mothers who are either the sole or primary source of income for the family, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The share was just 11% in 1960.” Now this won’t come as a shock to many Balinese women who are out there earning money for their families while their husbands are out back stroking their cocks (roosters of course). A tour I went on with Waka Land Cruises recently, stopped at a local rock quarry (no, I’m not sure why either), where an aging Balinese woman walks barefoot up from the river bed with stones on her head, all day every day, for years and years. I couldn’t help myself but ask where her husband was, and why he wasn’t helping her? The guide informed me that the husband had died, so of course I felt bad, he then told me that she did have sons but they didn’t work with her. The Daily Love post goes on to say that the US census continued with the information that of these 40% of households, a whopping 63% were single mothers, doing it all without the help of a man.

It is a funny world, as the dynamics between men and women change. The aging western male model comes to Bali and somehow lands some gorgeous younger thing who fawns and praises him until he fronts up with the marriage certificate and then starts to make startling demands. (OK, gross generalization, still….) The woman, on the other hand, often remains single while she brings in the money, pays the school fees and will sometimes attract a younger model (sometimes married), but often this is simply a sidebar, an entertainment, rather than something she will stake her future on. Are women becoming tougher? Yes? Are the men of TV shows; caring, responsible, committed, becoming an endangered species? Well check the statistics. I suspect a census here in Bali would find a very similar situation exists. The changing dynamics of love in the noughties will no doubt spin out a different set of circumstances down the line, cause no matter what, in the wise words of Sam Cooke, more “change is gonna come” The Daily Love is a site that seeks to remind us, sometimes quite successfully, other times not, that love is our real potential. If we love our husbands and wives and children, or nature, cats and dogs, isn’t really the point. The point is that we need to love ourselves enough to accept ourselves and deal with the ever-changing world we live in. Love is the answer, in whatever form it comes. And finally, here’s cheers to working women, single and otherwise.
