SCOOP Bali Pink Ribbon to Hold Charity Dinner Bali Pink Ribbon Charity Dinner will be arriving with a special concept. This year’s fundraising will be held on the evening of October 23, taking place at the ballroom of The Trans Resort. The charity dinner is aimed at raising funds to support the organization to run their programs throughout the year, which include breast cancer support centre, early screening program and increased knowledge of breast cancer through seminars and discussion. The Screening of Cambodian Son Canggu Community School will host the screening of winning documentary Cambodian Son, presented by the film’s director Masahiro Sugano. Cambodian Son documents the life of deported poet Kosal Khiev, after receiving the most important performance invitation of his career; to represent the Kingdom of Cambodia at the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Kosal would travel to London having only taken two flights prior; first, as a one-year-old refugee child whose family fled Cambodia and then as a 32-year-old criminal ‘alien’ forcibly returned to Cambodia in 2011. Held at CSS amphitheatre on September 27 at 7pm, this screening will also be used as a fundraising platform to support the invitation of the international performance poet to this year’s Global Initiatives Networking held in Bali on October. Bali to host Indonesian language teaching conference The International Conference on Indonesian for Foreigners held by Association of Teaching Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (APBIPA) will be held at Harris Hotel Sunset on September 30. Deputy Governor Ketut Sudikerta said that the conference would have a positive influence in improving the quality of Indonesian language teaching. He also said that in the future, employers may require foreign workers to have a certain level of Indonesian proficiency. The conference will last three days and have 11 speakers from all over the world including China, the United States, and Germany. It is hoped that the conference would improve Indonesian language teaching around the world according to the organizers.

Ari Bernardus Lasso, or better known as Ari Lasso, is a well-known Indonesian singer. His love for music began during his school years and was realized when he met Dewa 19’s drummer Wawan Juniarso and Padi’s guitarist Piyu during high school in Surabaya. Together, they formed a group called Outsider Band. A few years later, he was then recruited by Dewa 19 which was known as one of Indonesia’s biggest rock bands.

In the early years of his professional career, he was named as The Best Male Pop Singer and The Best Alternative Singer at the sixth AMI Sharp Award in 2002. Hailing from Haarlem, Gaston Steenkist AKA Dobre and René ter Horst AKA Zki are two of Holland’s most celebrated electronic DJs and producers with a career spanning 20 years. They have been producing under many aliases, but are currently known as the production duo Chocolate Puma. Drawn together by the house music movement of the early 90s, their career got off to a turbo-charged start with the release of “Give It Up” that has become one of their defining records.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, they appeared in a new set of projects and monikers such as Basco, Jark Prongo, Tomba Vira, Rhythm Killaz, Riva, The Good Men, René et Gaston and Klatsch!, as well as the F-Action in cooperation with Ramon Zenker from Hardfloor. They also founded their own record label named JP Records and Pssst Music.

In 2001, the duo released an underground track titled “I Wanna be U”. The track successfully reached #6 in the UK Singles chart and became a worldwide hit, prompting an appearance from the duo on Tops of the Pops. In 2008, they produced “Always and Forever” that was a hit in the Netherlands, Belgium and France, as well as many European night venues. 2008 also saw them making a collaboration with the Bingo Players, producing two tracks named “Disco Electrique” and “Touch Me”. Shiba San is already up there in the big league from DJing only around his hometown to flying from continent to continent. TIll Von Sein is in the era between the oldies and the newbies, he plays a soulful set and really knows how to get the crowd moving. Till was a typical urban kid living in Berlin, he spent his youth on a skateboard, rapping in several bands and was totally into the whole hiphop culture before he started to DJ at the age of 21. He also ran his own street wear shop till about 2006 where he decided to focus all his energy and time in his music. As he built a name for himself he also built the reputation of being the type of DJ that really mixed it up when it came to song choice, from straight techno/house records to rap classics or even a rock tune in a middle of his set.

His intimate knowledge of the industry, allowed him to slip easily into a been-there-done-that attitude, Till von Sein always shows non-stop enthusiasm when it comes to his gigs. For the last ten years, he has run the internationally active Clique Bookings at the side of Claudia Marquardt. More recently, his work as a producer has managed to gain him some popularity with releases on labels such as Suol, Dirt Crew and Supplement Facts. He has collaborated with artists such as Tigerskin, Aera, Chopstick and Catz’n’Dogz, and his DJ work has long been a fixture in the international club scene.

Till started to produce music in 2003. In 2005 he teamed up with childhood friend, Aera who had a bit more experience on the production side. Dewa Budjana and John McLaughlin will be playing guitar together live in concert with John’s ensemble 4th Dimension at Arma Ubud on Sunday, October 18. Dewa is one of Bali’s great guitar exports to both the rock and jazz fusion music worlds through his ongoing association with one of Indonesia’s greatest rock bands, Gigi and his six solo albums featuring his passion for progressive rock mixed with traditional music. Englishman, John McLaughlin is one of the world’s best jazz rock fusion guitarists who has played with the world’s greats through the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shiva draped in Indian music influences through the 70s to world charting collaborations with Al di Meola and flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia and many others over his expansive musical career. The Beat spoke with Dewa Budjana about the concert and his ongoing project, Museum Gitarku to get a better idea of both.

TB: How long have you known John McLaughlin? Dewa Budjana: I’ve known his music since I started playing in a band and it has always blown my mind. I finally met him, at his Remember Shakti concert in Kuala Lumpur in 2006.

What can the audience expect on the night? I will play my set first and then John will play his set. Then we play together. There will be a ceremony to sign and hand over his guitar to the museum too.

How did the collaboration in Ubud between the two of you come together? I have a composition on my album dedicated to John, the title is Duaji Guruji. Because of the delay on the grand opening of my guitar museum (www.museumgitarku. com) I decided to do a “Road to the Museum Concert”.

The Museum Gitarku Dewa Budjana (Dewa Budjana’s Guitar Museum) will be opening soon. Beyond being your own legacy to the music industry of Bali and Indonesia and to the history of the guitar, what else does it mean to you and when will it be finished? The museum construction is still in progress and it will be ready in a couple of years. The museum is part of my life and my musical journey.

What does Duaji Guruji mean? Duaji is how people called me in Balinese and means someone who’s become a father to their children, while Guruji means a guru, a teacher, a role model. Who are the 4th Dimension? 4th Dimension is John’s latest project. They are: Ranjit Barot, Garry Husband and Etiene Mbappe.

And what will the museum consist of when it does open? Apart from mine and other people’s guitar collections, there will be a Gitarku Festival, a recording studio and a recital room, where we will hold public performances. There will be many interesting events coming up in the future.

Hard Rock Hotel’s Splash is an excellent choice for a poolside hotel restaurant.

plash is located at the Hard Rock Hotel Bali down in front of Kuta Beach in an epically busy part of town in between Beachwalk Mall and Kuta Square. The hotel is right behind the Hard Rock Cafe and its swimming pool can be viewed on the patio of the inland facing side of the cafe. If you look across the very large pool from the cafe, you’ll notice Splash on the other side. To access splash, all you have to do is enter the hotel and make your way to the pool where the restaurant is located. It’s directly poolside so expect to see people come in and out from the pool in swimwear and towels along with their

FOOD offspring running in and out of the pool and restaurant. This scene gives Splash a country club like vibe where you see kids having wet fun and parents idly eating and drinking to pass the time. The interior of the restaurant is pretty utilitarian with semi open kitchens in view and a bar off to the side. The entire venue is pretty much open air and the dining area faces the pool. Servers will wait on you from the pool loungers, which gives it a pretty cool and relaxed vibe. Indeed, if you want to spend the day enjoying Hard Rock Hotel’s huge pool, Splash is an absolute no brainer. The first thing we tried was the Tower (99k) which was essentially three appetizers on triple decked dishes in a mini scaffold to save table space. The top included wholesome nachos, the middle had buffalo chicken wing and the bottom had crunchy egg rolls. It works as a poolside snack and as a great appetizer. Next we had heir HRHB Cheeseburger (139) which was built to Hard Rock corporate specifications. It was pure 100 percent certified Angus beef Americana between two buns which is what you come to expect when you go to some place quintessentially American like the Hard Rock franchise. During dinner, they have an excellent grill and we opted to try their 450g Bali Baby Lobster (300k). It was perfectly grilled and came with a generous helping of herbed butter which is always a good idea to slather on anything in completely excessive amounts. You can never have too much herbed butter on your lobster. The dish also came with a side of grilled vegetables and some French fries. We also had their Fisherman’s Basket (139k) which was an excellent main course that’s also very easy to share. It came with battered calamari, snapper and shrimp as well as a healthy portion of potato wedges. It also had some creamy remoulade sauce that worked well with this deep fried dish.

Also their Oreo Cheesecake (55k) was extremely notable with its cool creamy texture and Oreo crust. It was something you just need to try if you’re cheesecake enthusiasts like we are. For refreshments, their Midori Berry Rita (119k) was a deal. It was a huge glass of tequila, Midori, raspberry syrup, margarita mix and cranberry juice. We also had their Double Berry Cooler (85k) which was a mocktail that had cranberry juice, raspberry syrup, sour mix, and lime soda. If you’re a sweet tooth, this drink is for you. Ku De Ta Volume 8

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

Dropped right in the middle of Bali’s high season, the eighth offering from KDT continues to distil the breezy, chic ambience of the eponymous Seminyak hotspot. There are many that attempt to cash in with just another halfarsed mixtape, but with Volume 8, KDT musical director Jim Breese has really nailed the formula. Billed as a representation of a ‘day in the life’ of Ku De Ta, Breese expertly curates and mixes together the perfect international compilation of soulful chill, sunset and disco beats. Opener “Métele” kicks off proceedings with a taste of the Balearics courtesy of NYC/Puerto Rican act Buscabulla, the honeyed vocals of Raquel Berrios the ideal compliment to a bit of afternoon beach lounging. Next up, “Stay Cool” finds its legitimate home on Volume 8, after an illegal bootleg remix of the track by Al Usher was sanctioned by the label who released the original 1983 classic by Jaki Whitren & John Cartwright. With its pure, jazz-tinged daytime vibes, it’s without doubt the standout track here. Hot on its heels, the percussive drive of Cameo Culture’s “Told You So” keeps up the perfect pacing – all hypnotic beats and old school jazz horn solos.

Two more solid offerings from Aimes and Lovebirds mark the close of the daytime session, before the stunning deep disco “Heartbeat Speed” and drives things more towards the evening vibe. “Roly Poly” takes matters further with an infectious beat that subtly yet assuredly moves towards its pulsing conclusion. The sparse house of “Do You Feel The Same” by Hercules & Love Affair is perhaps the first hiccup in an otherwise spot-on track listing, with an over repetitive modulated hook and uninspiring vocal track unfortunately diffusing the momentum created by the previous few tracks – something which is compounded by the misplaced “La Taza De Oro”. Bearing in mind that this is supposed to be a day in the life of KDT, the lazy horns and beachy ambience would have worked better had it been placed much earlier in the track ordering. The final third of Volume 8 takes in the day’s peak (“You Can’t Stop Me”, “Falling”), before the leisurely “Run Slowly” & “Got This Thing” wind things up before last orders at the bar. An excellent addition to Ku De Ta’s soundtrack series, let’s hope Mr. Breese keeps up the pace for Volume 9. Dan Ashcroft.

Basa Walikan Batik Transcriptions Now – October 3 Rumah Topeng & Wayang Setiadarma Kayu, the Indonesian branch of French art employer Lucie Fontaine, is currently hosting its third project which is held at Rumah Topeng & Wayang Setiadarma. Titled “Basa Walikan Batik Transcriptions”, the project is also a solo exhibition by Romanian artist Radu Comşa. The artist sees the art object as a form of intellectual replica of his own design of thoughts. He merges divagations, extractions and references into ‘transcriptions’, conceptualizing the notions of ‘painting overall’ and ‘expanded painting’. His paintings are nomadic figures, constantly moving from different contexts, structures, frames and surfaces. Following Kayu’s vision, he integrates his artistic practice within the Indonesian context. The title of the exhibition refers to one of Indonesian language registers named Basa Walikan (reverse language) from Yogyakarta. Nengah Januartha Hailing from Tabanan, Nengah Januartha is a freelance programmer who puts has a passion for photography. Its where he captures moments that evoke the idea of the harmony of man and God, while his photos are series of a story that tell people about the ecstatic moments in Balinese religious culture. How did you first get involved in photography? It all started from an admiration for photos taken by a friend, which were not inferior to photos pasted on the postcards at that time. I then bought a pocket camera that I used to photograph my kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ceremony, and it was exciting. Eventually, this excitement continued, and I got my first DSLR camera four years later. Where do you normally get your inspiration? It mostly comes from the internet and books, particularly photography books. Additionally, it also comes from history and culture. What is your photography vision? In the beginning, I was always fond of human interest photography. I did street photography too sometimes, and I did landscape and macro several times. Nevertheless, human interest always held my attention more. I put more focus on the theme that I would use for documentary and storytelling needs. I tried to get the photos which are more organized and detailed, so that I could turn them into a whole, complete story.

Balinese culture, as well as the traditions. I feel that I have an obligation to document them as completely as possible. And what are the messages for those who enjoy your works? I want to tell a story through my photos, introducing them to the local heritage of diversity and togetherness in religious and artistic aspects. Can you tell us something about your photos which are currently exhibited at Conrad Bali? The photos exhibited are closely related to cultural themes, making them rich with the human interest. Normally, each territory has its own peculiarities which include garments, character, behavior and daily routine. These human interest photos show that whoever they are, they are still humans who can make other people laugh through their unique behavior, or feel touched through their spirit shown by the photos. Januarthaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s photos can be seen in an exhibition at Conrad Bali, which runs through to September 30.

What impression do you try to create in your photos? The wealth of Indonesian culture, especially Balinese. What objects do you usually capture? When Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m on a photo hunting trip in Bali, I normally capture moments that are more related to culture. LOOK The cemented pathway among the lush gardens of Grand Istana Rama Hotel leads to Aranya Massage & Spa which is situated in a calm nook of the hotel. The spa building has classic Balinese architecture, featuring the ornamented pillars and brick walls, as well as marble floors and warm colors that complete the interior. FEEL We were offered to try their signature “Fresh Fruit Ritual” (350k), and it was a good option for refreshing relaxation. The indulgent twohour treatment started with a foot ritual where our feet were treated with a subtle massage, as well as the application of natural sea salt for exfoliation. Moving to the massage bed, the treatment continued with body stretching to relax the muscles before getting into the main treatment. It was the highlight of this treatment taking place after the scrubbing; the fresh fruit body mask was then applied throughout the body, accompanied with a refreshing yogurt splash that went really well. After 120 minutes, we were allowed to plunge into the bathtub to clean up. INGREDIENTS For this treatment, there are three kinds of essential oil offered such as the green tea oil which contains antioxidants, lemon oil which is able to refresh, and lemongrass oil which provides warmth. For body exfoliation, the spa uses green tea scrub which can help remove dead skin cells. For body mask, the spa offers three kinds of mask which are all made from natural fruits such as cucumbers, strawberries and carrots. Each fruit has its own benefit for skin; cucumber which contains lots of water, is used to moisturize skin; carrot which contains vitamin A, is good to remove flakes; and strawberry which can be used to remove dead skin cells and brighten the dull skin. MAGIC Their menu has a good combination of basic treatments, traditional Indonesian packages and the signature options, perfected with prices which won’t break the bank. With its location being in Kuta, this spa might also be another option for those wishing for rejuvenation after a long day under the sun.
