He won the Beat Dude award last week at the Beat Awards 2018 and we thought it must be time to find out some more about this up and coming Australian/Japanese DJ producer who is making a mark around the island and the region.

TB: So what do you think about being Mr Beat. I know it’s a pretty naff name, but what does it mean to you?

Kaiser: For me, it’s being an ambassador for the mag and everything it stands for. But still keeping it fun and not too serious.

TB: There’s nothing wrong with having a good time!

Kaiser: No, but having a good time is new to me. I’m actually always either DJ-ing or in the studio haha! Having a good time admittedly, but maybe a bit too serious.

TB: Yes, I suppose most of these are basically popularity awards.

Kaiser: Which is an irony, since I moved here to develop my artistry and craft yet somehow that leads to popularity. In Sydney, it’s all about partying with everyone to build your career which takes away valuable time honing your craft. Maybe that’s why so many jaded brilliant artists get discouraged since

logically it doesn’t make sense, but you can’t be a hermit, you have to support your peers and the community.

TB: Well, being a DJ and having your own night (Escape) means you are out at least partying, right? I think being active on soc-med promoting your shows, and there appear to be many of them, is also part of the Mr Beat world too. King of promotion!

Kaiser: I’m trying to be active on social media, and I’m actually really struggling, but trying to stay on top of it, plus now how it’s all shifting to Instagram, it is a struggle.

But yes, true, DJing six days a week and I purposely don’t do Mondays! Sometimes multiple gigs mean I’m out quite a bit by default and this means it now feels like Sydney where “catch ups and dinners” are months in the making.

TB: Yes sure, I can imagine that. It’s good to be busy, though. I am rather busy too.

FEATURE And I wouldn’t have it any other way Kaiser: Yeah! And you love what you do, well some parts of it :)

Zero glamour for the DJs who chase the fame and status, maximum fun for nerds like myself! It feels like a game. It’s a shame it’s never gonna be like how it used to be again.. Now with these smart phones ... there’s a generation between X and Y and that’s my gen. We were the last and on the cusp of that tech transition... You’re an X, so you didn’t have the internet all be it dialup in high school right? It was still drive through cinemas and prank calls…Hahaa.

TB: I think I was gen yuppie. When I first got out on my own there was no such thing as computers nor internet. In the mid to late 90’s it boomed. Computers, internet, mobile and then smartphones later.

That’s why I started the beat, just to do something with my new toy, the computer.

Kaiser: Yeah I had the Nokia 5110 as my first mobile... We were happy with snake as our go to game... that old second phone line for the dialup and Windows 95....

TB: Simple times. What are you doing to promote yourself nowadays? It seems difficult to get your word out there online nowadays.

Kaiser: Apps will move things back. Now I’m gearing everything up for my social media to funnel to my website and then once I get it made, move to an app and run them parallel. That’s really the future.

With Facebook etc, you spend money to get likes (followers) only to have to pay to speak to them... and the more you pay the more

Kaiser: Not yet, but true followers will.

The people that purchased the CDs are your ‘raving fans’. And that’s how you cultivate a brand, because they then become your microphone.

One fan at a time.

It’s the modern day merchandise but in the digital form.

TB: There seems to be a lot of white noise out there.

Kaiser: We are now have an abundance of information and a scarcity of time.

Interruption marketing has now trained us to basically to ignore everything, so the trick is to figure out how to entice people.

Getting someone to download an app is hard enough, reusing it is a whole new ball game.

I read quite a bit on these topics to try and tap into their studies and experiences. It sometimes provides valuable insights but also inspiration!

Romeos’ grill is a hot recommendation among my meat loving circle of friends.

Romeos has their signature “black board grill” where you can find a choice of pork and lamb chops, rib eye and tenderloin steaks, chicken breast and grilled prawns as well as the famous Romeos Mix Grill, which was the main reason we were visiting. With a selection of sides to choose from such as French fries, mashed potato, baked potato, mix vegetables, creamy sweet corn, sautéed mushrooms and Mac n’cheese. The choice of sauces ranged from Romeos homemade steak sauce, lemon parsley butter, red wine bordelaise, whiskey peppercorn, classic bernaise, roasted chicken pan juice, apple cider BBQ sauce and mushroom sauce – these options make the Romeos grill selection all the more appetizing.

While we were waiting for the sizzling mixed grill to arrive, we enjoyed some Vietnamese spring rolls; a divine and fresh combination of prawns, Asian herbs, cucumber, carrot and nouveau Cham dressing, which was such a simple yet delightful starter.

When our Romeos Mix Grill finally arrived to the table, we were filled with so much joy before we even tasted it! This plateful of goodness consists of rib eye, pork ribs, pork sausages, lamb chop and chicken wings to complete, which all were cooked perfectly,

tasted beyond excellence and beautifully presented. Everything was flavoursome and we both agreed it was one phenomenal platter.

The colorful mango parfrait was also fabulously presented and despite being meant for sharing, I didn’t let my partner take the second bite. I mean it’s mango and that’s my most favorite fruit. I loved every refreshingly sweet bite of it, undoubtedly now one of my most favorite manggo dishes in town.

Fun and feasts are both covered at Romeos, from their daily happy hours for selected premium cocktails, beers and house wines starting as early as 12 noon! And don’t miss out on their live music entertainment at 7pm Monday – Saturday, to add some more festivity to the already eventful evening on Padma Utara street.

The attentive service of the staff is worth mentioning too and was definitely an added bonus, and made the whole dinner an overall top class experience!

Virtual mundanity.

GORILLAZ

The Now Now After the car crash that was Humanz; the sixth studio album from Damon Albarn’s cartoon side project, things are finally looking up again for Murdoc, Russell & Co (Murdoc’s current stint in jail notwithstanding).

Things couldn’t have got much worse in fairness, the whole thing was recorded on an iPad, and the guest list was way below par.

However, here on The Now Now we’re back on an even keel, with the whole project feeling a lot more balanced than the scattershot approach of Humanz.

It’s still nowhere near up there with the seminal Demon Days – most tracks were knocked out on the road during last year’s tour to beef up the set lists, but that’s not to say there aren’t some magic moments (and a few heavy hitting stars) to pull back any fans who might have wandered out of the virtual tent.

Snoop Dogg always shines – particularly when paired with Jamie Principle on the posthip-hop of “Hollywood”, but it’s summery pop of George Benson on opener “Humility” that allows easy access into the album and showcases just what Gorillaz do best.

“Lake Zurich” also stands out, with it’s zip zap synths and breathless 70s disco basslines, before “Fireflies” showers us with shimmering keyboards while a particularly world-weary Albarn invokes his hero Bowie: “If you see me floatin’ too many times/My face will be painted in these white brick lines”.

If this upward trajectory continues, the next Gorillaz album will really be something.

Maintaining this mindlessness is the foundation at Sanggar Bares, founded by Nyoman Bratayasa, an artist from the village of Lodtunduh in Ubud. He invites children in his neighbourhood to practice drawing and painting at his residence, having attracted more than 40 children today. In this exhibition, raw creativity is clearly seen in dozens of the children’s drawings. At this early stage of creativity, bold lines and strokes that decorate the surface of the paper as a field of painting are devoid of advanced processing. Windee Winata Windee Winata’s journey started off when he was living in Berlin back in 1996 when he bought his first SLR camera for his trips to Egypt, Greece and Turkey. Becoming instantly addicted to photography, he neglected his automotive engineering study for two and a half years, but eventually finished it and worked as a passenger car development engineer at The Mercedes-Benz Technology Center in Sindelfingen.

Moving to Bali in 2004, he turned this hobby into a profession and setup with his wife’s PhotoFactory, a mainly wedding photography business. Ten years later, he started doing fine art photography which he pursues until now. His latest works are currently exhibited at The Oberoi Bali until July 2.

Which photographers or artists influenced you and how did they influence your work?

Sebastião Salgado has been an amazing inspiration for over twenty years. He has tackled big themes with simplicity and subtlety, but the effects are so profound.

And when I thought his works were perfect, he went beyond with his latest work, “Genesis”, that, to me, reveals love itself. Next, the paintings of René Magritte evoke feelings in me far beyond their immediate visuals, and surely influence the surrealist photographic project that I’m currently working on with Russian painter, Natalie Wiswell, called “The Inconsistencies of Time”. I think, many artists have affected me more subconsciously rather than explicitly.

What is your favorite subject?

Connection. It could be anything, to which I feel a connection. It’s not the looks, but the (usually unclear, yet deep) feel that interests me. I don’t see the final image in front of me nor in my head when I start clicking, but instead let the universe take over. With the techniques of long exposure with camera shake, lens tilting and shifting, I sort of give up control when an image is being created.

What makes a photo stand out more than other photos? What characteristics do you often highlight in your works?

Maybe because they aren’t clear like most photographs. Usually, photographs are like news or stories, whereas my works are more like poetry. They’re simple and vague, but as you look at them, you discover more and more, visually and emotionally. It keeps them interesting for a long time, and you can always come back and be with them.

What do you want to convey through your photos?

It’s different from project to project.

“Transformation of White – A Tale of Realization” (can be viewed on his website) is a tale that starts with a glimpse and ends with awakening. “The Inconsistencies of Time” deals with bizarre yet common daily struggles of human beings with an outlook to what might be possible. “One” is a personal journey to connect with the unknown. So far, I’ve always started a project with a floating haze in my head, and I have some of those lining up.

One thing that made the oil more special was that it had been warmed prior to the massage, so that it was good for stimulating the flow and energy within our body, as well as helping melt the tension away. After 60 minutes, our session then continued with our second pick, the 30-minute “Aromatic Foot Reflexology” (245k). Aimed at re-activating all inner body functions, it used firm pressure to activate points and organs throughout the body, as well as muscle groups, bones and nerves. Started at the toes and

working up the foot, concentrating in these areas, it relieves pain, stimulates circulation and brings balance to the body. Finally, this treatment ended with a warm towel and foot lotion. Concluding our journey was a cup of warm herbal tea that made a pleasant finish to our treatment.

INGREDIENTS For this treatment, the spa focuses on using local products including Balinese herbs and spices as the ingredients. The options include Kutus Kutus Oil and Bokashi Oil which are great for health. In addition to these, there are also aromatic options like Frangipani Oil and Chocolate Oil, perfect for those who need to be more relaxed.
