This year 2018 was a mixed bag indeed. For better or worse, South Bali continued to grow exponentially to the north, south, east and west. Traffic in some ways got better, with the new underpass coming into operation, but in other ways worse, as even with the new underpass operating the traffic jams were still bordering on diabolical. Canggu will need some town planning quickly before the traffic comes to a grinding stop, but in a whole, Canggu is a fun place to be for young and old and the amount of great restaurants and bars that continually pop up is almost staggering. It’s surely only going to get bigger and better in the next year. It was a tough year for many as we started out with the lowest of low seasons after tourists stopped arriving after the mess of the airport closing in late November, 2017 (more so than the actual Mount Agung eruption, in fact). The Chinese were banned by the government from coming here until mid- January. It took months to get over that and by the time it did turn around the earthquakes began. That literally shook up or down the Bali high season, and affected the arrival and cashier numbers again for quite some time. After living in Bali many years, my experience tells me you have to learn to accept the good with the bad, and it’s never always going to be too much of one or the other, as they just float along together in unison, for the rest of time I would imagine. Om Shanti Om. However, even with all this Yin and Yang going on around us Bali is still a great place to be and the number of visitors continues to grow every month, every year. There must be a reason for that and I think I have an inkling as to what it may be; it’s simply a fantastic place to visit and even more, a fantastic place to live. You can’t blame people for wanting to be here. Let’s all be grateful for a moment for what we have. Happy New Year to all our friends, clients, and readers. Let’s all hope and pray for a great 2019.

FEATURE

FLOOP Much more than just a simple loop

Krisna Floop is a 26 year old, talented singer/ songwriter, born and raised in Bali. He went solo after being in popular local band, Mangrooves, last year, and now plays guitar, flute and loops – that’s loop machine recordings he creates live and are replayed throughout his songs. FLOOP, as you can imagine, is an amalgamation of the words flute and loop – which are principal parts of his act. Going solo he has found his own space and is playing a special strain of folk world music. There is a lot to know about this young man, but the first thing the beat wanted to know was how he got into music. Krisna Floop: Music has always been a big part of my life. Initially my mother introduced me to it by giving me my first guitar when I was about six. And the rest is history! TB: Your mother is a musician right? What’s she play? Yep, she’s actually a midwife/nurse practitioner by profession, but she’s a keen musician as well. She sings, plays the guitar and blues harp. Not many people can claim to have a blues harp playing mum. What other musical influences did you have growing up? As a kid, school was the biggest musical influence for me. Joining choirs and music projects. We also had gamelan classes early in the piece, which was really fun. And then, growing up, listening to my mother’s cassette tapes in the car, like Sting, Norah Jones, and some old school soul and RnB mixes as well. She also took me to a lot of live shows to see the local acts. Back in the day in Sanur, there was a reggae band that played at a place called Kalpataru, she took me to see them quite often. And the Moko Blues Band at Blue Ocean 66. Also Tropical Transit was a real Latin band that played at a Padang restaurant called La Pau. Those live bands were all a huge part of my influence as well.

58

www.thebeatbali.com

And on your father’s side? I never lived with my father so, not much. He is a Hare Krisna now so I suppose he is a musician as well in his own rights. Did you learn music at school? Initially, I learnt at home, with my mum and just experimenting on my own. Eventually I had a classical guitar teacher for six months and then went on to study contemporary jazz guitar for about a year. Later I moved to Australia to further my studies in music, particularly performing arts and popular music. That was at JMC Academy, Melbourne. Was there a moment you recall when you thought, I have enough talent to be a musician and you’re out on the road, or was it just rolling with it until you got in the right band? No, I’ve never felt that I have enough talent, I feel I’m on a constant learning curve. I think that’s what makes it interesting as an artist is that there is always something new to learn. I got really lucky with performing, initially being able to host open mic nights when I was studying in Uni. I also learnt a lot from busking on the streets. I then continued hosting open mics here in Sanur. At the same time I was performing with my band the Mangrooves, which formed when I moved back to Bali after studying in Australia. How did Mangrooves come about? Actually they were already running under a different name and different lead singer. They were called the Average Citizens, and a real good friend of mine, Jacob Koopman, was the lead singer. He went to Ireland to pursue his solo career and asked me if I wanted to take his position. So I said yes, only if we change the concept and the band’s name. No use in being average I guess. How long were

FEATURE the Mangrooves around and what were the highlights? Mangrooves were from late 2013 to the beginning of 2017. And the highlights? Wow, there were too many to mention and we had a great time together. But I suppose as achievements go, we were nominated at the AMIs for best reggae single and best album cover. We didn’t win, but the trip there was really fun. So why did it finish? We just agreed in the end that we all were wanting different things. Maybe one day we could get together again, but for now I believe we’re all happy with where we are.

Which you did. Tell me about your loops. I suppose everyone is into those machines nowadays, but tell me how you go about doing it. Ya, well when I first learnt the flute, I thought it’s a bit hard to play guitar and flute at the same time so the loop station fitted into that equation perfectly. I was always experimenting with loops but once I came up with Floop, I began to really take it seriously. I love making beats and playing the bass as well, so that was a good way to incorporate all that into my sound and identity too. I guess it’s just my way of simultaneously compiling what I know to become what you hear. The way I see it, music can be divided into three ways of creating sound…

What were you wanting at that point? I was wanting a democracy within the band, I suppose I was being too idealistic.

Hitting /percussive Strumming /strings Blowing /wind

What do you mean? I had it in my mind that there were no leaders in the band, that we all had an equal part and say within the band. I really wished for an equal democracy and harmonious community within the band. Applying it into our songwriting and assigning jobs, but it just didn’t really happen like that in the end. Also in the end, I felt we all had different musical paths to walk. The Mangrooves was a specific concept, playing reggae roots funk and ska, and that was a lot of fun, but personally for me, I felt it was time to define myself as a solo musician. I was asking myself, if I was alone, who would I be, musically? What music would I play? And what was my identity? And so, Floop was born.

And if I can achieve those three types of sounds, then I would have a full sounding mix. So I divide my sound into three sections: Beatbox or percussively hitting the body of the guitar and shakers. Rhythm guitar, bass and synth sounds come from my strings (guitar). Wind from my flute and voice. That’s my formula. Essentially, it’s just orchestrating a composition.

So there was a bit of struggle to get your music played in the band? No, quite the opposite. It was only my music being played in the band. I was pushing for the other members to contribute to the song writing, but so far, the songs that we have released I composed. But now you are playing all your own music anyway right? So what’s the difference in the end with Floop? Well, I guess that’s my point. If I was in a band I would love to collaborate with other creatives as opposed to have musicians play my songs with me. In that case I could just do it solo with a loop station!

I would say the flute helps to make your performance unique. It sneaks into your tune from out of nowhere and creates a haunting, folksie and Asian moment in your tracks. When did you pick up the flute for the first time? Actually my brother Ben gave me a bamboo flute as a gift three years ago on my 23rd birthday. I really loved it. I had never played a wind instrument before, (besides the saxophone very vaguely) but I felt really natural about it. It just makes sense to my mind. Some instruments I just can’t get my head around playing them, but the flute works well with my brain. Especially the bamboo flute, I love the simplicity of the fact that it’s just a hollow piece of wood with holes in it. Yet if we add our breath to it, it creates a beautiful sound.....

Gabah Restaurant

G

abah restaurant quickly comes to mind when the family and I are looking for a place for an authentic Indonesian feast around Kuta. I have visited a couple of times in the past - the restaurant’s atmosphere is still as beautiful as I remember. It has a calm ambiance as it is delightfully set around water and beautiful surroundings despite being located on central Kuta’s bustling streets. Gabah has an excellent choice of flavours in their extensive menu with a variety of Western and Asian classics. Gabah has very special presentation when it comes to Indonesian food, with a look at the photo menu being enough to make you drool. Normally our common family feast usually involves pizza and pasta, and though they are available at Gabah - this time we stepped out of usual food comfort zone and opted for one of Gabah’s signature sets: The Royal Baruna Rp. 999K ++.

In the ancient times, the ancestors of Indonesia known as sea wanderers honored Baruna, the God of the ocean they worshipped by dedicating a lavish feast consisting of a wide array of fresh catch from the sea and harvested fresh crops that are presented with prayers and dance of joy as reflection of their gratitude. Our royal lunch started with tasty tahu telur (omelette) entree that came in pretty banana leaf platters - similar to wanci, what Balinese use for offerings. Tahu Telur with a Balinese salad was served along with a delicious soup and refreshing young coconuts - all included in the Royal Baruna set which was brought with a beautiful smile. What a perfect start. A moment after... all aboard! Our one meter royal baruna boat was arriving and being set so magnificently on our table while the crew serenaded us with the traditional Indonesian folk music. It was so festive! On the boat was a sumptuous selection of grilled seafood such as baby snapper, lobster, prawns, squid, and mussels with beef rendang and variety of sides such as corn fritters, sate lilit, sauteed veggies, tuna sambal matah and veggies in coconut sauce. The set also came with rice, a variety of sambal, banana fritters and fruit platters. The whole presentation

was just so mind-blowing, we were almost lost for words. The seafood was excellent and tasty, perfectly grilled and marinated - there was more than enough to share for the whole family, with the crab bing my absolute favorite. The beef rendang however, was beyond unreal and I’m not exaggerating! Real tender beef in divine rendang sauce, definitely a winner! We tried a little bit of everything from the boat and savoured every mouthful. There were four of us and we still left with enough to take home. Such an amazing way to sample many authentic flavours on one plate, we were very impressed with the quality and authenticity of the food and of course the amazing presentation and the prompt and friendly service of the staff. We couldn’t ask for a better afternoon - we left very happy people and will definitely return for more!

CD REVIEW

TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2018 How can it possibly be the end of 2018 already?! We’ve only just gotten used to writing it down instead of 2017 ffs. Here we are though, a whole year has flown by and all that’s left to do is to gorge ourselves on chocolates & turkey leftovers, watch Die Hard again (it is SO a Christmas movie) and then gear up to see in 2019 in style. Meanwhile, here’s a rundown of all the choonage that got us all hot under the collar in 2017… Sorry 2018. 1. Amen Dunes Freedom 9/10 Taking his influences from such touchstones as Syd Barret, Tim Buckley and early Verve cuts, New Yorker Damon McMahon weaves a rich sound that is eventful yet uncluttered, earnest yet unpretentious. Our top pick for the year.

2. Foo Fighters Concrete and Gold 8/10 Just when you thought Dave Grohl & co. were heading for a cushy retirement, here’s yet another barnstorming album packed full of beefy riffs, canny songwriting and shout-yourself-hoarse vocals.

3. Gaz Coombes World’s Strongest Man 8/10 Gaz Coombes’ groovy-as-hell third solo album since shedding the skin of Supergrass back in 2010 marks the completion of his transformation from mutton-chopped 90s Britpopper to progressive multi-instrumentalist.

4. Mattiel Mattiel 8/10 Built around a backbone of tight-as-a-drum riffery and pared down production, each track is a wonderfully simple earworm that grabs and sucks you in immediately. The effect recalls early PJ Harvey, The Black Keys, First Aid Kit and especially The White Stripes. Fast, funky, bluesy, the album rattles by in a super economical 35 minutes with nary a dull moment.

CD REVIEW 5. Public Service Broadcasting Every Valley 8/10 Spun as a coal mining electro concept album interspersed with sampled clippings of news broadcasts and public information films during the latter part of last century, “Every Valley” leaves a profound impression throughout its immersive 45-minute run time.

6. Father John Misty God’s Favourite Customer 8/10 Folky, country, beardy, tragic, and doused in dry wit (yeah OK Josh Tillman actually is a bit of a bard), the songs go down like pints of decent craft beer served in a hipster bar. It’s kind of a joke, but it gets you drunk enough not to care.

7. First Aid Kit Ruins 7/10 Retro gimmicks aside, the real joy of ‘Ruins’ is the Söderberg sister’s vocals; both full of character and genuine empathy – kind of like a softer Janis Joplin but with the bonus of some wonderfully layered harmonies.

8. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Wrong Creatures 7/10 Their 2002 debut B.R.M.C. was such a clear-cut encapsulation of who Black Rebel Motorcycle Club were – leather clad, midnight-dwelling spooks – that further developments since have been deemed largely unnecessary. Wrong Creatures is testament to that with its business-as-usual voodoo rattle and hum.

9. Cat Power Wanderer 7/10 An album that speaks of dusty roads, desert campfires and deserted dive bars. A lo-fi treat delivered by an artist reveling in her own confidence.

10. Ben Howard Noonday Dream 6/10 It’s all spooky ambience and reverb echoing around in a hollow chamber on the Devon surfie’s third effort. The result is continuation of the darker, richer and stranger experience of album two, compared to his more poppy debut. We’d like to thank Dan Ashcroft for his outstanding CD reviews over the past year, I’m sure you would agree, some of the best in the land. Ed. www.thebeatbali.com

ART

Dodit Artawan Expressing his fondness towards the world of art since he was just in junior high school, Dodit Artawan fearlessly take his own decision to pursue an art career by attending Art High School and Indonesian Art Institute of Denpasar. His decision lead him to earn numbers of achievement as a contemporary artist including five solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions in various galleries and art spaces in Indonesia, Singapore, and Italy. How do you begin your journey as an artist? Just like any other kid who likes to do random doodles on their books, that’s how it begin. When I studied in Junior High School, I knew I was going to take art as my career. That’s why I took my own decision to enroll in SMSR or Art High School in Bali which then lead me to be who I am today. Can you tell me more about your artwork? My works currently can be categorized as photo realism where photos are used during the creativity process. I use various media to apply my artistic ideas such as paper, canvas, watercolor, oil paint, acrylic, marker and even spray.

About your artwork in “Celebration of The Future’ exhibition? I wil display my never before exhibited painting entitled “Behind The Scene” which took about two months in the making. There’s a story in my painting which tells people about the creative process of an artist. Artists nowadays have a tendency to employ assistants and utilize technology to finish their artwork. I projected a picture on the canvas then I sketched on it, took photos then finally painted on it again. What makes good art for you? I like developing artworks. What I mean by that is I really appreciate artists who can embrace the spirit of their era or representing the spirit of their era. I really love an artwork which draw value from their period of time. Even when the artwork has surpassed their generation, it still looks as if it is a new idea. However, I also appreciate the old traditional artworks. Both are good in their own way.

SPA

Lumbung Spa at Hotel Vila Lumbung

A blissful pampering at the main bend of Jalan Petitenget

LOOK Lumbung Spa is located on the quieter side of Hotel Vila Lumbung in Seminyak. A strong traditional vibe dominates the building’s interior with a thatched roof that creates a warmer ambience. In addition to the small and intimate, two couple treatment rooms available, the newly built semi-outdoor room next to it provides a even more relaxing Balinese natural experience. Plus you can also have treatments in the gazebo by the lagoon-like swimming pool complete with a mini waterfall. FEEL Among the many treatments offered, a 60 minute traditional Balinese session (IDR 250K net) followed by a 60 minute facial treatment (IDR 250K net) are our choices for the day. The combination of a traditional Balinese massage and aromatherapy oil treatment is surely a mind and body booster. It began with nervestimulating and muscle-relaxing acupressure on several points of the back and the legs, before slathering the aromatic oils starting from the feet and legs with fine, solid strokes and kneading that finishes off with a firm skin rolling and flicking. Finished with the body, the therapists then start the facial with a face cleanser and proceed into a series of a cooling sensation of toner. Feeling light and clean, our face then scrubbed with a scrubbing cream and massaged gently from the chin through the forehead with massage cream. The final touch for the face is a gel face mask and moisturizer. Last, the therapist took off our mask, splashed

a bit of toner, gave an extensive neck, head and shoulder massage then we’re ready to glow and go. INGREDIENTS There are three choices of essential oil options for the treatments; the soothing coconut oil that has antimicrobial properties and skinnourishing vitamin E. The delicious chocolate essential oil rich in antioxidants that promotes softer skin and boosts production of collagen and the refreshing lavender essential oil for a deeper relaxation. They also provide various ingredients for scrubs including chocolate, coconut, lavender, Boreh, and Javanese herbs, which are all great to lift dead skin cells. MAGIC Lumbung Spa is designed to wake up the mind and body, especially for those who are under a lot of stress (which can translate itself to a tense body) or jet-lag. The treatment certainly does the trick as post-treatment our body felt super refreshed and energetic, leading to positive side effects: better posture and mood. Guest can also choose a variety of ingredients provided for each treatment they choose, like the coconut, chocolate and lavender essential oil as well as traditional herb based scrub.
