Every step, every kilometer will be dedicated to supporting a better life for Indonesian children.
SOS’s New Program
Scholars of Sustenance, a Food Rescue Charity, recently participated in the newly launched brand program, Westin Meetings at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua. The launch focuses on sustainable meetings and a session was held for associates to learn about the resort’s food waste program in cooperation with SOS. This included a team building exercise, Sandwich Making Competition, which was judged based on team work, presentation and taste. All sandwiches were then generously donated to SOS to be distributed to people in need around the island. The Westin Resort has partnered with SOS to reduce landfill waste and help feed the underprivileged people of Bali. If you are a hotel/retailer, please consider joining SOS to make Bali a greener and better place! www.thebeatbali.com

Kate Wood equals Eco-Wood A new eco-friendly and environmentallysound brand, Kate Wood opened the doors of its first store in Indonesia last month in Berawa, Canggu. Out of their very cozy and organic-styled outlet they are selling all kinds of fascinating items made predominantly from bamboo and re-cycled materials. The Beat spoke with co-founder and partner in Kate Wood, Russian born, Dina Daly about the enterprise. Kate Wood Originals, named after founder Pim Gietelink’s daughter, was first created out of a desire to build a legacy he could pass on to future generations. Born in Amsterdam in 2012 first with wooden sunglasses and watches, Kate Wood Originals has become a socially

conscious business that believes there is still great value in carefully handcrafted goods made from renewable resources. Dina Daly told The Beat that the company first chose to work with bamboo and wood, because they were sustainable products. “Bamboo is a fast-growing plant and it’s very eco-friendly. We use leftover (recycled) wood to make watches and sunglasses. The bamboo is from China and Indonesia. The different types of leftover woods that we work with, like sandalwood, ebony, rosewood and maple wood, are either from North America or Southeast Asia,” Dina says. Eco-friendly products have not always been
FEATURE an easy sell to a skeptical public but that is changing. “Eco-friendly products were very niche and seen as a little pretentious until a few years ago. It’s actually not easy to make products that are both eco-friendly and fashionable so we try to find the right balance with that,” says Dina. We can imagine everyone wants everything designed very sleek nowadays, but how does that go with strength? There must have been much to learn at the beginning, especially in regard to strength, but they managed to overcome that too. “Since we opened the first flagship store in Shanghai, some four years, we’ve been inspired by customers and friends - the fine people of Shanghai. For example, there are over 70 new styles of sunglasses, with different shapes and finishing, with materials like purple heart wood and stone veneer as well as classic and trendy shapes. And in regard to strength, all sunglasses are fortified with multiple layers of wood, so they are stronger and won’t brake easily. Most importantly, we have invested in the best lenses we could find. Same as watches, we use the best quality Swiss movements, with double face glass for water resistance and stronger wood, like brown sandal wood and walnut.” As stated above, Kate Wood is about helping the next generations, and they want to continue doing more for children. Presently they are working with Orbis (www.orbis.org/ en), which is a nonprofit organisation with programs dedicated to blindness prevention and helping people with eye diseases. “They have their own airplanes and fly doctors to remote areas to help those who don’t have access to medical facilities. Many of our products are related to sight, so it makes sense to support Orbis,” states Dina. “We have been working with ORBIS more than six years already, from the beginning of Kate Wood, in fact. We donate 10% of our proceeds to them.” In 2016 Kate Wood opened their first flagship
store in Shanghai, China and in May 2019 the second flagship store in Bali, Indonesia. Dina has taken charge of Kate Wood in Bali. She’s no slouch and has three degrees in mechanical engineering and economics, but she chose to first work in the hospitality industry in Shanghai. In 2017, her life and profession changed completely when she joined the Kate Wood team full-time. “This began a new chapter in my life,” she starts, “and I am so happy and gratefully that this happened to me. This new venture makes me so happy, fills my creative side and brings me so much satisfaction building a brand from the ground up and achieving so much success in a relatively short period of time.” “Even though I was there helping right at the beginning of Kate Wood with my partner, Pim Gietelink, in my marketing/part owner position now in Bali I am often meeting clients at the store or attending various events. Meeting people from different professions and cultures makes my job so fulfilling. The daily interaction is always the highlight of my day,” finishes Ms Daly. You can check out the stylish and very ecofriendly of Kate Wood on Jalan Berawa, near Macan restaurant, today. I’m sure you will be impressed. [David Trauts] www.thebeatbali.com

The Residents that make
The Beat spoke with Cristian Birlanescu from Sydney’s S*A*S*H, who will be having their second monthly show at Vue Beach Club next Sunday, July 7, about their resident DJs who will be anchoring the Sunday gigs over the next months until October. According to Cris, over the last few years the three S.A.S.H residents have made the cornerstone of the S*A*S*H sound. Each has tailored their music for a different aspect – each encompasses a different branch of the day and night. Abroad, the 2019 S*A*S*H world tour will see them cross paths with DC10 in Ibiza, Pacha Barcelona, Renate in Berlin, PIV Showcase at Claire in Amsterdam and of course, right here in Bali with their S*A*S*H Bali Open Air shows and the Gypsyland show in July. So who are these S*A*S*H resident DJs, you may ask?

Jake Hough:
Kerry Wallace: Taking a page out of the “all-things-sleazybouncy-and-rolling” handbook, a handbook which we suspect he very well wrote, Kerry is more than comfortable with a soundtrack of afternoon rollers to a main room headline slot. Locally, over the time at the helm of S*A*S*H, the list of more than appropriately executed warm-ups, closing and openings is much longer than we care to mention in this article sharing the stage with countless of houses’ finest. Being much of the fuel which drives this train, Kerry’s music speaks much further than the dancefloor with S.A.S.H approaching a decade and has become an internationally recognised event synonymous with a quality soundtrack and an Australian staple.
If the mark of a strong DJ is versatility, Jake must be one of the strongest acts within the Oz scene. From dubby moody room openings, euphoric morning closing sets, and main room hammer time, Jake’s musical versatility and unwavering music standard set “Hoffy” as a standout artist. With a warm tinge and a healthy nod to the roots of house music, there are few who don’t connect to Jake’s music. Elegant, simple, effective and always a cheeky classic thrown in. Now serving his signature “Breakfast at S*A*S*H” sets as the sun rises, his soundtrack perfectly mirrors the mood and colour of the room – all to full affect from the crowd. These residents will be gracing the decks of S*A*S*H Bali at Vue Beach Club over the next months, every first Sunday of the month. Check it!
Gabby: Few people boast the musical ability that Gabby has in so many forms – physically, vocally and technically. As a DJ today, she’s the lady of choice in Australia for any underground event. Her unique mix of weird, warm yet slightly wonky minimal, micro house and techno, creates an environment that both challenges & nourishes the mind while liberating the body – Gabby shines brightest when she can completely take the reins. www.thebeatbali.com

W Bali Goes Zero Waste with S.O.S The W Bali – Seminyak have partnered up with Scholars of Sustenance to reduce the hotels food waste to landfill. The innovative charity collects and distributes unwanted food supplies to underprivileged children, while encouraging a cleaner and greener environment. The S.O.S in-house food hygienists will inspect the food on arrival and separate into edible and inedible food, from there they will optimise the produce and prepare nutritional meals for the children. The inedible food is then composted or given to low-income animal farms. Director of Culinary, Chef Beryl Adler comments “Having someone come collect the delicious food that we cannot resell and donate it to charities to feed locals in need is touching. I am proud to see the food leaving the hotel for a good cause. I hope everyone can take this program and integrate it in their own cities around the world to end hunger.” A great cause indeed, if you would like to learn more about the services S.O.S provide please visit scholarsofsustenance.com.

eave your date speechless with an exceptional gastronomical experience at one of Seminyak’s top restaurants, Bikini. It’s safe to say that once you enter the dining room, you know the restaurant means business. The space feels like a New York loft style warehouse with a lively vibe, the staff are very attentive and the crowd is dressed to impress. With that in mind, the laid-back Bali vibes too are still prominent. Creative Culinary Director and Chef Jethro Vincent calls it “fundining, something you may get in a fine-dining restaurant but making it accessible in a fun, relaxed environment.” The creativity in the kitchen is what excited me the most, the smells and seeing the beautifully presented dishes as we walked in was an instant mood-boost and sparked the energy for our date before we even sat down!

FOOD ginger mayo that looked like it had come out of a wizard’s cauldron. Moving on to the delicately arranged Small plates, we were presented with three. All of which encompassed an incredible level of execution and surprisingly working wonders together, even with such a contrast of flavours and textures. We enjoyed the Yuzu cured Hamachi, Smoked duck breast and Potato gnocchi. As for the Mains, we shared the tender Beef short rib and paired that with Coal roasted truffle cauliflower. Simply divine! To end this luscious experience, we couldn’t skip dessert. In fact, we went all in and ordered two of the most fantastic desserts we’ve tried to date. The Smoked beef fat brownie with hazelnut dacquoise and cocoa nib gelato and the Local single origin chocolate with fermented banana and condensed milk snow. These two were just, WOW! A truly memorable Date for Two. We will be back! To kick things off, our waiter recommended some crafty signature cocktails; The Kyoto Rainforest (150k), refreshingly balanced and a pleasure to drink, alongside the Hot Lips, Chocolate Kiss (160k), which was strong and exciting! A quick scan of the food menu and we were eager to order. Luckily there is a “feed me” option (530k) where the chef chooses up to 15 dishes from the menu and you get to sit back and enjoy. We opted for this. The menu is a combination of what’s in season, what’s on trend and what chef Vincent loves to cook. Diners are taken on a journey through modern Australian-Asian fusion dreamland and fed a range of mouthfuls to small and large plates paired with inventive cocktails. We started off with some mouth-watering starters like the Pomme souffle, Sustainable yellow fin tuna tartlet, Smoked eel chawan mushi, Chicken satay and Babi guling empanadas. The noticeable stand-out was the Chicken Satay, crusted with crispy quinoa, served with www.thebeatbali.com

Soppy Spritz
Mrs Sippy Barman: Mrs Sippy
Mrs Sippy is all about having fun in the sun and making sure you are enjoying quality food & drink whilst you’re at it! Their cocktails highlight the seasonal fresh fruits in Bali and accompany them with only the finest of liquor. One of their signatures is the Soppy Spritz (140k) and Barman Wayan recommends it because of its fresh, tangy and perfect balance of citrus and sweet. It consists of Belvedere vodka, home-made blood orange tonic, limoncello, pomelo & thyme and it’s safe to say it was as tasty and refreshing as expected! If you’re in town throughout July, August and September don’t miss Sneaky Sound System playing every Saturday and immediately order one of these cocktails. You won’t be disappointed! Flower power
Flying Lotus Flamagra Flying Lotus has enjoyed quite the halfdecade since his last album, “You’re Dead!” He collaborated on Kendrick Lamarr’s groundbreaking “To Pimp A Butterfly”, while Thundercat’s Drunk gave his often abstruse Brainfeeder label a brush with mainstream success. “Flamagra” builds on that higher profile, with cameos from such left-field artists as Solange, Anderson Paak and cult director David Lynch. Musically, it’s still dense and intense, with
funk, jazz and electronics rubbing up against bumpy hip-hop. But the heavyweight line-up brings with it a welcome focus on songs, many loosely based around the theme of fire. Relatively reined-in it may be, but there’s still plenty of chaos to keep things interesting. Dan Ashcroft

Helado Negro
This Is How You Smile Born to Ecuadorian parents in Florida and raised in Brooklyn, Roberto Carlos Lange – AKA Helado Negro – could accurately be described as a world muso, fusing classic Latino with more modern elements. Something that’s been reflected in his regular output over five modest-yet-critically-acclaimed albums. On his sixth, all the elements have converged to create his best work to date; a gentle mix of acoustica set to chill electro beats and summery synths. Subtle surrealism is the defining mantra, as songs like the immersive “Fantasma Vaga” and standout track “Running” attest to. Think languid strums, retro beats and Negro’s gorgeously
calming vocals that swing between Spanish and English – sometimes in the same song. Half the time you don’t even notice, it’s all just one lovely noise. Listen to “Pais Nublado” (cloudy country) and you’ll get the picture. Gentle strokes of piano, steel drum and xylophone are sparingly painted in here and there, the effect being a simple, intimate sound that feels greater than the sum of its parts. Do yourself a favour and find a quiet corner to go sit in while you soak this up. A joy from start to finish. Dan Ashcroft

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
Your sights are set high, but several circumstances help to bring you back down to earth. You can successfully combine practical matters and more fanciful ones this period. Career offers come now, and money owed to you could also arrive. This is the perfect time to move your love life into a new area and forget traditional ideas you might have about love and commitment. Unusual alternatives like speed dating, online relationships, and other rule-breaking experiments will make you happy. Passionate romance without any strings or expectations might be the answer. Favorable Dates : 27, 30, 4 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Grey
You have a strong interest in broadening your mental experiences in general, and finding expression of your personality through them. Your vision is all the more realistic now, but pleasingly so. You work steadily and determinedly towards your goals. Authority figures and elders tend to look favorably upon you. You’ll be after true intimacy on all levels, and you won’t stop until you have it. By the end of this period, quantity in the relationship department will get replaced with quality, and this process involves time, soul-searching, frustration, and eventual fulfillment. Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
It’s time to start fresh with regards to how you go about satisfying your needs for security and comfort, as well as to take charge of your life by taking the necessary steps to make yourself feel good and secure. Getting in touch with your needs for personal stability is important, as the positive effects in so doing will come back into your intimate life. You may also be just as inclined to splurge on yourself, plumping up your nest. Monetary problems from the past may clear up during this period. Favorable Dates : 28, 3, 5 Favorable Colors : White & Blue
You are likely to be more sensitive to what seem like outer world pressures that force you to examine some of your deepest desires and attachments. These include your sexual relationships, your finances and your need for control. The second week brings powerful intuition for work, the chance to turn losses into gains, and opportunities to deal with past problems. Don’t forget to take a break from monotony in work. A healthy perspective on your life helps to keep everyday stresses from getting to you too much. Favorable Dates : 29, 2, 6 Favorable Colors : White & Blue
A more free-spirited and faithful attitude towards life is with you in this period. Your intuition is heightened to possibly even uncanny levels. This transit can add a mysterious aura to the way you project yourself to others. It is time for building a solid foundation. Understand that moderation right now is necessary for your spiritual growth and your physical body as well. The need to restructure and re-organize your life will become glaringly apparent. You feel considerably more free to be yourself, and others tend to accept you more readily. Favorable Dates : 30, 5, 9 Favorable Colors : Green & Grey
You are noticed and recognized for your natural talents on the job, and you could be busy re-investing money into your career. Some of you will be making money from esoteric endeavors or through work behind the scenes. Watching out for scams or risky speculative investments has been necessary, and continues to be a concern this period. You will take expert financial advice or deal with financial people. LG HomeBrew LGs latest venture steps out of their usual comfort zone and is stepping into the world of automated beer brewing with the HomeBrew. The countertop bot will be coming out sometime in 2019 and will supposedly be able to produce over a gallon of beer from a single-use capsule containing malt, yeast, hop oil and flavouring. The HomeBrew will have freshly made beer ready to drink in roughly two weeks depending on the specific capsule. You can choose between; American IPA, American Pale Ale, English Stout, Belgian Witbier and Caech Pilsner. The capsule also supposedly helps keep the mess contained which is why the machine can efficiently automate sanitized cleaning after every brew. It seems to good to be true!
