SURF TRIP to SUMBAWA Though well connected to Bali, Sumbawa is a very different kind of place. It is a lot less developed and mostly very dry and extremely conservative. It is full of sheltered bays, volcanic ridges, terraced rice paddies and dry vast expanses. This twisted island that sprawls out into the ocean is also a home of world class surfbreaks, with Lakey Peak in central Sumbawa being the epicenter of the surf action. There are four major surf breaks crashing into one colossal bay lined with soft golden sand and dotted with bars and cheap accommodations. Lakey Peak beach scene feels super different from the ones on the neighboring islands, so nonsurfers come equipped with books or whatever floats your boat and holds your attention.

West Sumbawa with ominous sounding breaks, such as Supersuck and Scar Reef is also surfer magnet. The bays and beaches outside of Taliwang try to one up each other with their golden white sand and fairy tale views. One of the most spectacular ones is outside of a commercial hub of Maluk. The town is shabby, but the eponymous beach more than makes up for it. It is shielded by two headlands, so there is a great swimming in the shallows and when the swell hits, the reef crafts phenomenal barrels. Within a walking distance south of Maluk is the famed Supersuck, consistently voted the best left in the world and many veteran surfers have declared it the best barrel of their lives. The

FEATURE gnarly surfers from Hawaii’s North Shore routinely come here, so that speaks volumes about the quality and allure of the Supersuck surfbreak. In between the swells, Moyo Island just off the Northwest coast of Sumbawa is a good place to visit and its main attraction, the magical Mata Jitu Waterfall with its cascading pools filled with turquoise water. The area is so charming, it almost appears surreal and resembles more a 2D painting of a make-believe place. There are zero crowds and we visited twice during our short stay on the island exactly for that reason. Despite it being one of the most picturesque falls we’ve

seen in all of Indo, it hasn’t yet been run over by the ferocious Instagrammers, so you don’t have to wait in line to take a plunge or a picture, so don’t forget to bring your swimmies. The atmosphere is very serene and peaceful. Most overland visitors to Sumbawa never leave the bus to get from Lombok to famous Komodo Islands, but this slightly overlooked island offers natural delights to non surfers as well and is definitely worth exploring. DJ Story #13 Bali Resident DJs Jaux Ion Bali Hi Jaux, when did you become a Bali resident DJ? In 1990 at CDBS Radio Action. After one year there I became resident DJ in Double Six, Gado Gado, Scandal, Rasa Sayang, Janger.. and then Deejay Club which was my longest experience for more than 10 years. Tell us your background in music My first music genre was hip hop & funk, with inspiration from African bambaataa. But once I started playing in clubs I got close to house music and developed an interest in the underground scene. When I became a resident at Deejay Club I started to play progressive/ psytrance. I continued to play underground music in other Bali clubs like Pyramid, Mint, Mirror, Klapa and more recently Red Ruby and Opera. I have also been invited to play in Jakarta, Jogyakarta and Surabaya. In 1992 I participated in Indonesian DMC Style DJ contest coming in at #3 DJ in Indonesia. Beside playing as resident DJ in clubs, I played at rave parties in Sanur, Dream Island and Gili Trawangan. In 2016 I started playing as Shahada - a producing Psytrance

duo – and in 2017 we attended the famous Earthcore Festival in Melbourne where we had the luck to play together with the main DJs in the Psytrance scene - Vini Vici & Berg. Favourite styles to spin? I love all the kinds of music that make me and the people dance, but house music is my favourite.. I have to mention particularly psytrance because in my musical journey it has been very present. Shammui – Armin Van Buuren Local DJ extraordinaire, Shammui was in Holland for a couple of weeks recently and had a brush with fame in the city of Leiden. Tell us about it Mr Shammui. I was on holiday and did two gigs. The Leiden Independence Day and its pre-party. At one of the gigs I met a long time influence of mine, Armin van Buuren. He lives there with his wife and kids and during the off season or not touring he comes back there to spend time with his family. Did you run into him or you knew him from before? I ran into him at the day party. A good friend of mine is a close friend of his. Well, in Leiden everybody seems to know everybody. I heard you playing some very cool trance sounds at Ibiza in Bali last Saturday night. Was that influenced from meeting the trance meister? Hahaha yes, for sure, 20 years ago I started it all with trance. But the other night was more progressive and melodic techno of my choice, my actual sound. It was also progressive infuenced by John Digweed, Sasha, Nick Warren back then, but until now too. Ohh it seemed to have the trance chug. Progressive trance perhaps. It’s a trancy sound but not like the old stuff. It’s all about the sound nowadays and it’s difficult to differentiate genres. But it is awesome we can

mix different genres in a set. That’s what I’m doing now in my sets. So much more fun. So how was the Amsterdam nightlife? Did you check out the Amsterdam scene and all? It was an amazing experience. I didn’t really go to lots of clubs in Amsterdam, only a few places. It was cool. The music I heard was either very housy or full on techno. Did you make some good connections? Not much actually. Only with the DJs from the festival and Colle, the producer of Owami, is a food friend. He’s an up and rising artist. And more on Van Buuren, how much of an influence was he on you as a DJ? He was back in the day, when he was doing proper trance without that EDM sound. Did you tell him that? I think everybody would agree with you. Haha, no I didn’t, I don’t want to offend him. I reckon he’s business minded and to catch the biggest crowd he’s gotta do what he’s doing. It all changes as time goes by. Did you hang out or just do the pose and shoot? We hung out a little bit. There were too many people around also and everybody wants to speak to him. And what were you talking about? Not much, hahaha, just an honour to meet him in person. And how he inspired me with his trance back in the day. Nice guy, though.

Foundation presented their 6th annual WatermanÂ´s Awards Night and once again it was a great success, this year in the beautiful setting of the new Pier Eight beachside restaurant area of the Fairmont Hotel in Sanur. Written in the summer of last year, the eighth album from Ezra Furman is more than a little preoccupied with the dread and anxiety of Trump’s America. “I should not be alone the way things are going” he screams over reimagined Rolling Stones ‘woo-woo’s’ on the opening track, before mourning the loss of his twenties under the guise of personal freedom on “Evening Prayer”.

At first glance it’s a chaotic racket, but Twelve Nudes manages an urgent simplicity, where songs are kept moving by big, shiny riffs and on-point melodies. The lyrics are profound, sardonic and more than a little quotable. On “My Teeth Hurt” – a song about dysphoria and dentistry – showcases this wit brilliantly; “the ache inside me reminds my mind my body’s really there”, he wails.

Soundtracking this rude awakening with a spiky but generally melodious punk vibe, his previously reedy croon has morphed into a more rasping shriek – channeling the raw energy of his heroes The Ramones and The New York Dolls.
