his Saturday afternoon people can support the community in walking for the awareness and the prevention of breast cancer in Bali for the second time at Nusa Peninsula Island at Nusa Dua of Bali Tourism Development Corporation Complex south Bali. This charity walk has been initiated to raise funds and awareness to support the treatment of breast cancer sufferers in Bali. Cancer has been an increasing problem for Bali Health System and Medical Professionals. Seventy three percent of Bali’s breast cancer patients in Bali are between 30 - 50 years of age, as is also the population of colon cancer. Seventy to eighty percent of breast cancer patients are checked at stages 3 and 4 of the disease which results in poor recovery and due to sky rocketing costs, most of the patients are unable to afford the treatment. Public education and promotion of health in regard to cancer is important to downstage the cancers and diagnosis and treatment still require great effort and consume a lot of resources and funds. If you would like to support this important event, registration for the 2nd Bali Pink Ribbon Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness in Bali is at Nusa Peninsula Island in the Nusa Dua hotel complex from 2pm Saturday and the 5km walk starts 4pm. Contact www.balipinkribbon2010.com. Proceeds of the forthcoming Beat Party 2010 will be going to this charity. Speaking of which, The Beat Party is on in a couple of weeks, Friday May 28, 2010 at Oceans 27, right on the beach in Kuta. There’s a great line-up of national and international acts to entertain all you guys for one big, full moon night. Read inside for more details of that event and so much more!

Vierra Sound Like Power Pop
Blue Eyes Fri 14 May 8pm
Hail From Jakarta, Indonesia
Have Been Led by Kevin Aprilio, the son of one of Indonesia’s well renowned musical composers, Adi MS, this quartet has created a popular niche for themselves with most of the band’s songs being composed by Kevin himself, proving the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. With female vocalist Widy Soediro Nichlany, the band’s Power Pop rhythms appeal to their many young fans who are referred to as Vierrania. Releasing their first album ‘My First Love’ back in 2009 with the hit single ‘Dengarkan Curhatku”’ the band instantly became a national hit. With the price of fame also came some accusations of plagiarizing a single by Lost Prophets titled ‘Rooftops’, but nonetheless, the fanbase remained strong. are Now Vierra have become a phenomena on Indonesia’s music scene, raising the young members to celebrity status in a very short time. They’ll be getting the talent to Blue Eyes on the 14th of May, so if you’re a Vierrania or just wanna see what the hype is all about, don’t miss their show.

Anang has recently returned to the limelight to release his latest album titled ‘Mata CInta’. Syahrini, who appeared in Indonesia’s music scene as a sexy songstress with songs ‘Pusing Setengah Mati’ and ‘My Lovely’, has been quite controversial during her career, with a video being banned from airing on local television for being too raunchy. are Now Anang and Syahrini have been linked by public opinion as a couple. It is still unclear if this is true, but after releasing a single together titled ‘Jangan Memilih Aku’, they do appear to be an item. This apparently romantic duo will be performing at Kama Sutra on the 15th of May; don’t miss their performance and the chance to judge for yourselves...

Scott Langley
After first falling in love with the acid house movement and getting on board the rave scene back in your teens, what were your steps to producing your own tracks? Any mentor in particular? Well, to be honest ever since I could remember I always wanted to feel the buzz of walking into a club or a clothes shop and having one of my tracks playing - also watching the crowds move to what I created - however I only started to learn production 7 years ago. But it was always in my dreams. Who have been the most influential or inspiring people to have crossed your path over the course of your career? My biggest inspiration has to be Masters At Work. How did you come to be involved with the Ministry of Sound crew?
W
ith three labels, hundreds of productions and over 20 years of experience in the industry, you could say Scott Langley has paid his dues. As the world’s biggest shows continue securing him on their line ups, we caught some words before his passport got a Bali stamp… 040 | beatmag.com
Over the years I have played a few times at Ministry Of Sound London and also MOS Bangkok – I remember Gareth Cooke from way back when he first booked me ten years ago. I felt I was at a good point in my life where I needed management as I was starting to work with some very big players and believed in my work but needed backing. So I contacted Gareth and explained where I was at in my life and who I was working with, and he called me to MOS HQ for a meeting and we just clicked and bonded very well. - I do feel very, very lucky as hey, how many DJ’s contact MOS everyday for gigs? Have you noticed a difference in your direction since your DJ work has been managed by Gareth Cooke? For sure, I mean I’ve been DJing 20 years so my styles are big and broad but having Gareth as my manager and booker, yes indeed, I’m getting some amazing gigs around the world now and he knows exactly my path and where I want to go and how determined and hungry I am. So he is pushing me as far as he can.

nthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. Has the love for production outgrown the DJing or does it all blend into one when you play one of your own tracks to a packed out venue? Funnily enough, when my first agent ‘Unlimited DJ’s’ shut down 7 years ago it was like every man and their dog decided to be a DJ and seeing as I was going solo I thought I needed production skills to help me get DJ work. But now the years have passed, I get so involved in making music and then seeing people dance to what I have created that I guess they balance each other out. Well, maybe I prefer DJing... You’ve toured the world extensively; ever had any experiences on the road that have turned a positive tour destination into a negative memory? Haha, well it’s hard as after 20 years of DJing I guess I have had many ups and downs, but December last year I was doing a MOS tour event in Val d’Isere, France and because of the bad snow it took me 30 hours to get to London when it should have only taken a few hours. I got stuck in Paris for the evening as I caught the wrong train; the Eurostar got stuck in the tunnel, so I had to make my way to Calais to get a ferry, where the staff were on strike. Long story but I ended up on a French news channel. ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ springs to mind... Who would you say is going out on a limb at the moment and bringing new sounds to the attention of the mainstream? To mind I guess Steve Angello, Mark Knight and Erick Morillo. Do you think anything has been lost with the digital age and the ease with which people can mix using software now? For sure. I mean I love my CDs as they’re so much better to travel with, but I feel a DJ had to work much harder with vinyl. I mean using computers means they can’t mess up a mix. It’s definitely taken the edge off a real mixing DJ and split who is really good and skillful, in my mind anyway. I can’t ever see me mixing on a computer. I find it boring and lazy. How would you define your sound? Well, I play and write all styles, so from soulful, funky, deep and tribal through to tech house. I love it smooth, I love it tough and nasty, depends where I am and what the crowd are up for.
042 | beatmag.com
How much time do you spend researching new tracks and expanding your music catalogue? Well, every day I get many promos sent as I own three labels, but before a new gig I search Beatport for what’s new and exciting. What was the last gig you attended as a punter that blew you away? I’m 35 now with two kids so it’s not often I go clubbing and to be honest I am so busy. And, in all my years I can only name maybe 10 really great nights. If I go see a big name DJ and he plays a record I have I feel let down. I mean the cutting edge DJ’s who get paid serious amounts of money need to impress me, and it’s not often they do. But in truth most up and coming DJ’s who are not very well-known are far better. I feel the big names get lazy. Well, I’m going by my last few nights out where I have been let down by my so-called heroes and music legends. What’s getting top rotation on your iPod at the moment? Well really, my own tracks, as once I finish my work I like to go over and over tracks to see how I can make them better the next time; after all I’m here to make myself known in the industry so I put most of my effort into myself. What’s the strangest event you’ve played? Done some amazing parties over the years, some real weird ones too in some mad places, but I’m playing in Bosnia on the 8th of May at a very exclusive party for 300 special guests in a library. So I’m guessing that will be up there… Plans for the rest of 2010? Loads, watch this space - loads of countries to play, loads of productions. Myself and my partner Alan Jinx Chamberlain aka The Tomorrow People are now working with the likes of Barbara Tucker, Dawn Tallman, Stephanie Cooke etc and we just had our latest two tracks licensed to Ministry Of Sound’s summer compilation. And trust me we are not stopping there. We have a massive array of house music and we are about to explode over the industry. You will not be able to keep away from the words ‘The Tomorrow People’! Scott will be bringing the love to Double Six on Saturday the 22nd of May. Get amongst it…

NAIF 044 | beatmag.com
NAIF equal retro equal good equal entertaining. They’ve been around since the mid 90’s and they’re still going strong today with their new traditionalist’s imagery, heavy on the 70’s side. 2009 saw the release of their last album The Night at Schouwburg and this year the plan is underway to get Planet Cinta onto the shelves. The Beat talked with Jarwo and Emil about their upcoming album, Indonesia’s music today, and their thoughts on lip-syncing…
Pa r t y . Th e B eat Pa r t y . The B e at Pa r t y . Th e B e at Pa r t y . The B eat Par t y . The B eat Par t y . The Ok, let’s start with your upcoming album, Planet Cinta. We’ve seen “coming soon 2010” on your website for quite a while now. Do you already have an exact date when it’s going to be released? What took you so long? Jarwo: No exact date yet. The album has needed longer to be prepared than we arranged, the music master is done, but things are more complicated than just the master itself, because we decided to do everything ourselves. We need to prepare other things too, album cover, video clip, marketing schedule etc. Emil: We’re pretty sure that the album will be released sometime this year, haha... We have to finish the artwork, then duplicating, printing and then, since we’re managing ourselves and we’re building our own record label, we have to find a distributor to become our partner. So it’s a lot of homework to do… The album is going to be titled “Planet Cinta”; does it mean you are going to focus on love, nothing but love? Jarwo: It’s all about love, but not all of the songs are “ordinary love songs”. Love is the strongest theme written into the songs and we think it’s ok for us to write a whole album as a love song. In fact, there is a little compromising between our pure idealism with what people like to listen to… Just one question, are we prepared for NAIF love songs? Hehe… Will you release the album online or on CD? What are your reasons behind the decision? Jarwo: First on CD only, next, we never know, could be anything. I’m wondering about it myself… hahaha… Emil: We will release the album physically and digitally (of course). It’s a common way, we’re thinking of other ways to sell the album, maybe in some other package, but actually we don’t put high expectations on selling the album nowadays. This album is just a ‘statement’ that we’re still producing. It’s a fun thing to do in our lives.
things go wherever they run. Today’s music (large and commercial) is like 80% directed by listeners and by people who want big money from it… For people other than them, there is still no direction. Emil: Music is just music. I don’t really care about direction. People listen to different kinds of music depending on how they got their ‘education/ appreciation, environment/ habit, emotional equation, spiritual equation, so, it really is different, one from the other. It’s all mixed up beautifully. For example, you’ll get some brainiac who works as a high level executive for an international company who likes to listen to dangdut music or some poor homeless murderer who listens to jazz music. There will be music with a strong character, and then mainstream music (which is very common in all countries in the world). The music industry, local, national, and global, is having a very difficult time right now. Most people believe the biggest problems are piracy and illegal downloads. Of course this will affect your income. Does playing many concerts and selling merchandise help? Jarwo: We’ve been looking for an income source outside of selling physical music for a long time. The big useful part of releasing an album is to maintain our existence so people keep coming to our shows, which is where we get our income mostly. I think the music industry will keep on going, but in different new ways, not like before. Emil: Performing is the best. We already released our live recording album, The Night at Schouwburg, limited edition. That’s a fun thing to do too. Last question, there’s a big debate about lip-syncing. Lots—if not all—of TV music programs in Indonesia are in this format. Are Naif ok doing lip-syncs?
And, jumping to another topic, tell us what you think about Indonesian music today. Is it going in a better direction, worse direction, or ahem, no direction at all? Why?
Jarwo: I don’t know about lip-syncing, we’re just doing minus-one. Doing it is having fun… haha… TV is not all about live performance, it’s more about appearance. There are no laws. Being a performer means you have to make the effect to people who watch you however you do it, including ‘act as if it’s real’. If you don’t like it, don’t do it. Emil: Well, it’s just a technical thing with TV production. It’s ok for me.
Jarwo: In my opinion, there is no direction in Indonesian music at all. In fact, there shouldn’t be any. Music development should not be directed, let
NAIF are: David (vocals), Jarwo (guitar), Emil (bass), and Pepeng (drums).

Tell us about you musical background and what led you to the decks. Were Jazz and Funk infused into your bones as a child? Did your Dad have some decent vinyl? I was lucky to have parents who were both into music. My mother was into disco and soul and my father used to be the tour manager for a few LA rock bands in the 70’s. I can remember my Mom and I dancing to “Let’s groove” by Earth, Wind and Fire in the kitchen when I was 5. My own personal connection with music as a child started with Prince‘s album 1999 and of course Michael Jackson (R.I.P). From there I discovered early hip hop, electro and my interest just sort of grew. As a teenager I was really into the acid jazz scene in London where I lived. There were a few key clubs that educated me on the funk and DJ’s who schooled me on the artists I was listening to. I thought this was the pinnacle of great music ….until I heard LiL Louis French Kiss on the radio. It was love at first listen. House music had arrived in my life and it has never left. Although I am a fan of all good music no matter what genre, nothing makes me feel the way a good deep house cut does. How would you define your sound as a DJ? Driving, funky, unpredictable and very energetic, even in deep sets. I like to play with different genres and challenge my own boundaries. It is very important to me to tune into the crowd’s energy and work with it to create the best possible experience for them. Just don’t ask me to play any trance, ok?
Cpen Sublime melodies and killer bass lines are this producer’s forte and he’s on board to bring the funk home to The Beat Party dance floor…

Was your debut solo EP ‘Pirate’s Life’ a long time in the making or did you lock yourself in a studio and jam it all out over a short burst of inspiration? The Pirate’s Life E.P was written in LA when I had only one keyboard, an MPC 2000 drum machine and a portable dat recorder. A friend of mine had a studio with tons of vintage gear so I took a couple of the tracks over there and played the Rhodes, moog etc. on top of the songs. For the song Third Quarter, I did some session drumming with another friend in exchange for his trumpet solo. The EP was written in about a week or so. Funny thing is that a few days after I signed the record to Seasons Recordings, my apartment burned to the ground including the gear that I used to write the tracks. A lot of precious vinyl fell victim to the flames that night.

Tell us about your collaboration with JT Donaldson; where did the friendship begin and at which point did it become a compatible production effort? I met JT in Dallas, Texas in 1995. He was working at the world famous Bill’s Records and I had just moved there from London. We were both starting out as producers; neither of us had released anything. He had a Roland 909 and a Juno 106 and so we started messing around with tracks. It didn’t take long to realize that we had strong chemistry in the studio. Before long we were releasing projects together and have been for over 12 years now. Who takes which reigns when it comes to laying down originals? Normally with us, JT handles the beats and I handle the music. This formula has proven itself time and time again. JT is great with samples, adding the odd vocal phrase here and there. What have been some of the biggest boosts to your direction over the years? Raving in the countryside of Southern England in the early 90’s. This was my official introduction to the joys of what true club experiences should be. There may have been a few illegal substances involved, I will neither confirm nor deny this … This experience has never been topped. Any negative experiences over the years that caused you to question your direction as a DJ? For many years I wasn’t DJing , just producing records. When I began to play out, I wished that I had started much earlier because it has helped me to have a better understanding of what the role of the music that I write is, on the dance floor. Which project has brought you the most satisfaction over the last couple of years and why? I would have to say the one that I am currently working on. A new LP. My first album came out in 2001 on Glasgow Underground and 9 years is too long of a break, no? It’s great to be able to get back into the lab and focus on a whole new body of work. The experiments are going well so far.

What inspired this trip to Bali and how did it affect you? This is my first trip to Bali and I am loving it here. I’m a huge fan of Babi Guling and the smiles of the locals. No one in the states can smile like that. My long time friend Willy (who was also at those infamous raves back in the day) moved out here a couple years ago and fell in love with the place. I pretty much followed his lead after hearing his reports and dragged the family out with me a couple of months ago. What do you see as the major differences between this island’s electronic scene and the club culture you’re used to back home? The main difference is that Bali is a very transient place. Tourists dominate the crowds most of the time. This makes it difficult to have a local scene. Back in Los Angeles there are club nights that have been running for years. There are local followers who create a family environment. Having said that, I have had a few great nights out so far at places like Blackstar, Ku De Ta and SOS Anantara . Musically here in Bali, it seems like the harder more pumping sound is prevalent. This is not exactly my cup of tea but I understand why it’s popular. It works particularly well if you wear a fake Bintang tank top. (hehehehe) Have you now decided to call Bali home? What has inspired this? I am going to stay till the end of the year and then decide. The reason for being here is to write music with a new frame of mind, channeling the island energy for inspiration. If moving here means only bringing three items with you, what would they be? Easy : My wife and my 2 kids . If I didn’t have a family: 3 gallons of high strength mosquito repellent. If you could meet anyone from the past, present and future, who would they be and what would you ask them? It would have to be the big man, God. I would ask him, “Why the #@$% did you create mosquitoes?”

The S.I.G.I.T
The S.I.G.I.T has been a long time in the making, as most truly competent rock and roll bands are. When it comes to looking like you don’t give a &#*@ about anything yet need to be taken seriously, you need to back it up with a pretty intense dedication to your music and these boys have certainly been doing that for some time. It was back in ’94 that Adit, Rekti, Acil and Farri began hanging out, chewing fat, jamming, writing tracks and generally annoying each other. Come 2004 and Spill Records saw the talent, releasing the bands first self titled debut mini album as they stepped up the gig accelerator. Their first single ‘Soul Sister’ got high rotation on local radio across Jakarta and Bandung and Trax magazine declared them to be “the hottest rock n roll band in town”. Since then it’s been a consistent rise in popularity and opportunity for a band that has earned its reputation through thick walls of distortion and old school blues rock riffs, live shows that scream of experience and down to earth attitudes that sit pretty with the tunes. Already having toured Australia, California and Hong Kong along with a huge opportunity to impress thousands at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Texas, The SIGIT have already been the focus of many a rock enthused crowd. With a huge fan base across Indonesia, the boys have ripped out their chords at plenty of national festivals and venues. Now they’ll be bringing the amped energy to The Beat Party’s live stage…

DJ DADE
Getting infected with house beats came at an early age for DJ Dade. With his older brother DJ Romy passing on the love along with the exploding house scene in Jakarta thanks to early underground clubs like B1 and Bengkel pushing the sounds, Dade was set to travel on one road. By 19 Dade had already joined the successful team of spinners at 1945 Music Factory and putting his talent to the decks at major clubs soon followed. Quickly loved and obviously revered, Dade was the chosen act to open for Tiesto in Jakarta where he laid down the mood for 26,000 excited dance lovers and he didn’t let them down. As the youngest DJ to win Best DJ of the Year at the Paranoia Awards in 2005, Dade has gone on to play internationally in Malaysia, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and has also put his ears to producing tracks and creating successful compilation albums. With a solid reputation for bringing a dance floor all the right sounds, Dade was an obvious choice for The Beat Party line-up.
Renowned for being an electro playground, Bali is certainly never short of a DJ stream to satisfy the thirst of the party masses. The flipside of this is finding DJ’s that truly bring a unique music choice to the dance floor with an ability to keep everyone not only moving, but seriously loving every tune. DJ Adit does just that. Hailing from Bandung, Adit pulls together a broad width of styles that stretch their influence from MGMT to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, New Order to PJ Harvey, Phoenix and beyond, from pop to electronic and everything worth playing in between. His personal touch has been quickly earning him accolades not just across Indonesia but right through Europe and Australia thanks to international touring in the recent years. DJ’s and artists like Steve Aoki, Deep Dish and Peter Hook (New Order) have all given praise to his abilities and there have been plenty of awards to back them up, including Best Rural DJ at the Paranoia Awards in 2008. Adit will be kick-starting the energy for us at The Beat Party so be there with your ears in check for a rockin’ playlist.

Expect Fight Delays
The highly anticipated bout between Indonesian WBA featherweight champion, Chris John, against Argentinian, Fernando David Saucedo, scheduled to be held on the 22nd of May at Discovery Mall, has been cancelled due to an injury sustained by the champ whilst training. Fight promoter Zaenal Thayeb has not stated the exact date when the fight will be rescheduled, only saying that it will be held after the World Cup in South Africa. Chris John’s trainer insists that the injury is minor, from which the fighter will make a rapid and complete recovery. Chris John has been reported as returning to his home in Semarang, Central Java to allow his injured arm time to heal, with plans to return to Bali in June to resume his training schedule.

a daunting atmosphere to step into for the first time. Everywhere you look, there are solid, high walls, barbed wire, doors, gates, locks and more locks. Armed guards with dogs. There were many faces staring at us; some friendly, some threatening; some trying to work us out, others asking us for spare change or cigarettes. All seemed wary of our camera. The place I’m describing of course, is Kerobokan Jail but we were there for a very positive reason… We accompanied Bali International Women’s Association (BIWA) inside the heart of the prison, to meet the inmates and witness the fantastic program that has been organized by BIWA. They have spent almost Rp.5 million recently on bringing 10 dentistry students and four qualified dentists to Kerobokan Jail. 600 inmates have been seen and treated so far during three visits, the first of which was to see the jail’s 73 female inhabitants and another 33 foreign prisoners on April 12th. The second visit on April 19th and the third on May 3rd saw the dentists return to treat local male inmates. All were given the once-over

Vitamins, medication and disposable materials that totaled Rp 1,110,000 ($123) were also donated. Social Welfare Coordinator, Ratih Oorbeek, said that this program is part of BIWA’s scheme at the prison, which includes providing raw materials for inmates to produce handicrafts, giving them more focus and purpose during their time there, and something other than crime to turn to when they are released. BIWA is a non-religious, nonpolitical and non-profit organization devoted primarily to the welfare of women and children in Bali. Members include Indonesians as well as expats representing 28 countries. Bali Brawl
MMA virgin and beat reporter, Tosca gets ringside for the battle of the Bali Titans....
I
t was an impressive turnout on Friday night (May 7th), as a mixed crowd of locals, tourists and ex-pats rocked up at Mirah Silver to see some serious ass kicking. Organized by Canada-to-Bali transplant, Travis Wagner, who also fought in the first bout of the night, this was the first MMA fight night of many more to come. The queues streamed in and after stocking up on icy cold Bintang from the makeshift bar, people found their seats to the sounds of heavy metal and thrashy punk rock blaring from the speakers. Ring girls in 69Slam underwear could be seen mingling with the crowd by the ringside. As the music slowed down in true ‘Rocky’ style (though it wasn’t quite ‘Eye of the Tiger), man-mountain referee, Richie, entered the cage, followed by Travis Wagner and opponent, Patrick Bird (Hawaii, USA). There were huge cheers from the home crowd for Travis, who gave a great performance in his first ever fight, wrestling Bird to the ground with blood pouring from his mouth and planting several sickening punches and elbow strikes to the face. This was the only fight of the night that made it as far as Round 2, when Travis eventually succumbed to Bird’s chokehold and tapped out of the fight. One of the most memorable wins of the evening was taken by 27 year old Balinese featherweight, Nur Madura, who entered the cage with the most
070 | beatmag.com
impressive record of any of the fighters there – 27 wins out of 27 fights. He made short work of his 28th win, knocking opponent Hendro Nugroho from Java to the ground twice with a couple of blink-and-you’ll-miss-them punches to the cheek and jaw and high kicks to the chest. Again, it was a chokehold and tap out that led to Madura’s victory, who jumped straight up, hugged his opponent and got to his knees on the cage floor, bowing down to a screaming home crowd. The fifth and final fight of the night was an allAmerican middleweight brawl between Deric Kyle and Hawaii’s Coby Jones. This was the fight that most people were here to see. The fighters danced around the ring, landing some resonating punches to each other’s faces and bottom ribs, but it wasn’t long before this match turned into a battle of strength on the floor, with a series of wrestling holds and maneuvers. All the crowd were on their feet and the atmosphere was electric, before Coby Jones took the title on a technical knock-out in the form of a sleeper hold. Despite the fairly long wait between each of the fights, it was a great night out. So whether you’re a bloodthirsty advocator of violence or an MMA virgin who just wants to go along and watch in morbid fascination, the next Bali Brawl comes highly recommended... check it out on 4th June at Mirah Silver, Jalan Majapahit No.1, Kuta.

Parau
I
nfluenced by a number of Hardcore bands, Parau was formed back in 2002. As time progressed, the band introduced certain elements of Heavy Metal to their stage set lists and from there, they eventually transformed their style into a full Heavy Metal sound, mixed up with the varying additions of each band member’s own style. What you’ll hear now when you get in the mosh at a Parau gig is a rhythmic wall of heavy distortion and thumping double kick beats, set to get your adrenaline pumping. Parau’s heavy metal recipe consists of smart and sensitive lyrics promoting moral issues about social topics and the environment. Having been featured in many compilation albums, Parau released their first album in 2006 titled ‘Surga Bencana’ (Heaven of Disaster) under the label Electrohell Records. They are currently working on their second album scheduled to be released in a few months under a new label from Bandung. anding together back in May of 2003, ‘Scared of Bums’ took their rather question-inducing name from a NOFX track as a reference to their love for both the band and the genre of punk. Starting out with a similar direction in sound, the boys moved more into what they dub ‘Metal Melodic Core’, expanding their influences over time to bands like Metallica and Sum 41. The boys got their first album wrapped up and out to the local masses in early ’07 as a self-titled record. It included 10 original tracks and one cover (Total Chaos’s ‘Riot City’). Their songwriting skills got them onto the ‘LA Lights Indie Fest 2007’ compilation album with 10 other national bands, which brought them plenty of attention and led to shows being booked across Java, including a support slot with the USA’s Simple Plan at the Senayan in Jakarta. They hope to have their second album out in late July or early August of this year, followed by a promotional tour around Indonesia and possibly Singapore and Australia depending on sponsorship. ith the band’s name coming from a lane near where the founding members lived, you could imagine these musicians were living close enough to each other to have inspired plenty of jamming. Originally hitting the scene with two vocalists under the name Buntu in 2001, there were plenty of gigs for these boys before studies and other commitments forced some line-up changes. 2005 arrived with the final incarnation of the members and with it the decision to add the Balinese word ‘De’ to the name. Inspired by the sounds of the 60’s and 70’s De Buntu have come to create their own musical concept which they refer to as FUNTHEMENTAL. Now having played at numerous venues, big events and campus events around Bali, to date they have released a mini album, four compilation albums and another full length album titled FUNTHEMENTAL.

FUNKY UBUD
We were up in Ubud last week. Naga told us that Thursday was the night to try out a bit of Ubud nightlife and so, off we trundled. You might remember our last trip to Ubud with drunken locals falling on their face and 12pm curfew, etc. We were interested in going back to check out life in the streets of that cultural place and apparently, Thursday’s the night to ‘get down’ in Ubud. We met in Casa Luna on Jl Raya Ubud at about 8.30pm. Casa Luna has always been a favorite restaurant of ours with it’s tasteful décor and wholesome food. It’s always busy and that night it was no exception. However, we were there just for a drink and then off to Naughty Nuri’s Warung, Jl Tromol Pos 219, 5 mins out of town, up the hill, going East. Thursday night is when the boss at Nuri’s brings in a huge Tuna and makes some of the best and most famous sashimi in town. Normally, you have to get there early, around 7.30pm, or you’ll find there’s no Tuna left, but fortunately when we stopped the car out the

front, hung a head out the window and asked if we were still in time, we were and charged inside for a feed of sashimi, beer and real chips. Next stop was back to the Terazo on Jl Suweta. There we had a coffee and cake in the comfortable surroundings of one of Ubuds newest and trendiest restaurants. We met Mr Oka, famous designer, and friend there who would later star in our photos at the Jungle Party at Funky Monkey. Every Thursday night the Funky Monkey, in front of the Monkey Forest, has a theme party and when we got there it was dressed up straight out of the jungle. Many people also arrived in jungle wear and by midnight the Monkey was getting very Funky. The drinks were going down and the energy was being pumped by the resident DJs with a choice of House, Drum n’ Bass and Trance. We headed back down the hill around closing time, 1am and must say, we enjoyed the Thursday night trip to Ubud, immensely. ketut s.

Wild Orchid
Anantara Resort Seminyak The Beat’s Tosca experiences an eye-opener of a five-star Thai dining experience...
F
or some reason – and I truly can’t think why now – I had never had the pleasure of the Anantara Resort before going there last week. Situated on the beach front near Dhyana Pura, the sheer class of the place as we pulled up was breathtaking. ‘Anantara’, a Sanskrit word meaning ‘borderless water’, was the name given to the jugs of water set out by locals for thirsty travelers making their way across Thailand; and now, Thai brand Anantara are looking after thousands of travelers and holidaymakers in their resorts, from Phuket to Bali to the Maldives. We were here to check out ‘Wild Orchid’ – Anantara’s gorgeous poolside/beachfront restaurant. It serves an international menu for breakfast and lunch, but evenings here are all about Thai food. There are two main concepts: the first is ‘neo authentic Thai food’. The menu is by Thai chef, Jiranan Sangoen, affectionately known
088 | beatmag.com
as “Chef Nan”, who came to Bali from Phuket in 2008. He explained to us that the word ‘authentic’ is used to illustrate that you’ll find no fusion here – just true Thai. The second concept is ‘Dining by Design’, which is intended to allow customers to design their own perfect evening, by choosing their own seating according to their preferred mood, as well (of course) as food and drinks. And choice there is. A truly beautiful rooftop area overlooks the beach, and if available, there’s the option of a penthouse. Downstairs, outdoor seating is arranged around an atmospherically lit pool - also overlooking the beach - where guests can listen to the waves rolling and breaking on the sand. Intensifying the romantic ambience, there are candles, flowers – purple orchids, of course, glittering gold place settings and flame torches that burn away in handcrafted stone pots around the pool. The indoor area is still open-fronted and therefore boasts the same amazing views, but is cooled by air conditioning and provides the best seats in the house if you want to stare in amazement at the chefs cooking up their works of art in an immaculate open kitchen.
Sitting at a poolside table with a delicious Kiwi Martini cocktail in hand (70K), which incidentally tasted completely of kiwi and not at all of alcohol – a fantastic but potentially fatal combination in my case – I marveled at the uniqueness of the menu. Not just at the wide variety of traditional Thai dishes with Chef Nan’s own special twist, but at the actual menu; an ebony wood and purple velvet contraption, that sits on your table like a box full of treasures, and drops open concertinastyle when you lift it. I know what they say about small things and small minds, but it was just another example of five-star attention to detail that made this dining experience a unique one.
Every time I have eaten Thai, it has been a curry of some description, and although there was a fantastic range of Thai curries – Chef Nan’s personal favorite to cook – it was interesting to try an alternative. The first was the popular Phad Thai (135K); a delicious fried rice noodle dish featuring ingredients such as bean sprouts, jumbo prawns, chives, peanuts and Phad Thai sauce, a taste reminiscent of the traditional Balinese peanut satay. Second was the Plaa Saam Rot (160K); fried and lightly battered seabass fillet pieces, impressively presented in the rest of the filleted, battered whole fish, served with Thai sticky rice and a tasty tamarin sauce.
I was told that Wild Orchid was all about having an “indigenous” experience due to the authenticity of the chef and food… and if this is indigenous, then I’m off to Thailand. First off, we sampled the Chef’s Tasting Platter (110K); tender, lemongrassscented lamb, succulent duck in rice paper rolls and fresh seared scallops. Next came the alltime favourite Thai soup, Tom Yum Goong (55K), a sour and spicy broth with jumbo prawns – a real tongue warmer. Apparently this dish is the most popular soup with customers and the most well known internationally, though personally, I preferred the Tom Kha Gai (50k); a not-so-spicy, creamy coconut soup filled with tender chicken pieces, sharp cherry tomatoes and galangal (Thai ginger) – a party in my mouth.
Completely stuffed, I thought I was unable to squeeze in a dessert, but the Thai ones we tried were the perfect thing for your palette at the end of such a taste explosion of a meal. The Tab Tim Krob (65K) was water chestnuts and pumpkin crushed with ice and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, accompanied by an almost apple pie tasting tart. Finally – yes, finally – the Kao Niaw Ma-Muang (55K) was a ball of sweet, coconutty sticky rice in a caramelised sugar basket, served with a fan of ripe mango and coconut syrup. Future Thai meals will never seem the same after this – unless, of course, I’m back at Anantara. Tosca

n their individual searches to explore alienation, angst and the meaning of life in the 21st century, the artists Ketut Teja Astawa and Em Sumba have chosen very different visual styles with similar underlying themes, resulting in a stimulating contrast of shared emotions. The rambling nature of both the form and content of contemporary art in Bali is a mirror of the confused times we live in. Astawa has superficially adopted a traditional style of Balinese painting that originated in the East Balinese village of Kamasan. While Em Sumba worked for five years (1994-1999) in animation in Japan, his canvasses are edgy and enigmatic. Date Venue Tel Web

group exhibition by a number of Galang Kangin artists will feature works of art depicting the varying problems faced by Kuta. Why Kuta? Kuta as a small territory in Bali has a broad range of problems and ironies such as religious activities going hand in hand with the hectic party life and street hawkers making transactions together with the wholesalers; in short, Kuta, God, alcohol, and everything else, have their own place in society. Realizing the vast problems of Kuta being too much to take on, this exhibition will feature a small piece of Kuta from the eyes of the many artists from Galang Kangin.

Ida Bagus Putu Purwa Born: Sanur, 1 October 1977
The Process
A graduate of STSI Denpasar (Indonesia’s School of Arts), Ida Bagus Putu Purwa (better known as Purwa) uses a technique that he describes as his own style. By combining acrylic and oil paints on the canvas while outlining, and to accentuate more of the detail of the main object of his work with charcoal, Purwa is able to create a wonderful piece of art. His images of motion are close to photo realistic, as they are taken from portrait photographs, which are artistically altered by Purwa’s unique touch.
the Inspiration
Mainly using images of himself in his works of art, but with no intention of being narcissistic, Purwa notes that it is easier for him to express his emotions and imagination with his own portrait as the main object. It is clear to see that Purwa is an active person as many of his works feature some form of motion or unique posture, and with

his artistic touch comes the transformation of an ordinary portrait into a lifelike form of art.
Exhibitions and Awards
Purwa’s self styling form of expressionism has brought him to be featured in many group exhibitions around Indonesia, but his works have also been exhibited in Korea, Ireland, Australia, and Thailand, with his latest exhibition landing him in Hong Kong for the ‘Edge of Indonesia’ exhibition. Purwa has also held two solo exhibitions: his first in 2008 at Elcanna Art Gallery, Jakarta with his exhibition titled ‘Breakout’ and in 2009 with his exhibition titled ‘SIGNsession’ at Tony Raka Art Gallery, Bali.
