en years ago this Friday night, the first beat magazine hit the streets of Bali. Personally, I was really excited, especially when I went into A Bar and found people actually flicking through some. It was a different beat then, being completely black and white on the inside and printed on HVS paper – the cheapest paper you could find, but to me it looked absolutely beautiful. It was about 4 months’ work and a lifetime’s experience to get that 32 page baby out on the street. Before the beat came out, people were asking me, how do you think you’ll have enough content to print it every fortnight? There’s not enough going on! That same weekend when the first one was published, the second edition process began and so it’s been for the last ten years. We’ve seen a lot of changes over those years. In many ways it has become a lot better, in some ways worse, but for the people who call it home and the many people that are regular visitors here, it doesn’t get any better. Ask anyone who lives here. I bet they all say they love the place. Now think how many places you’ve been or lived in the world where as many people say that. I doubt there would be many. And as someone once said, the airport’s just half an hour away with flights out every half hour if it gets too much for you. Ha, that’s the way it is in this place, like it or lump it. I’d like to thank everyone who helped to make the beat happen over the past ten years. There are way too many to mention here but a special mention goes to the ones still here and still fighting. Let me assure you it’s still a mission to get this thing out every two weeks. The Beat 10th Anniversary Party is on this Friday night at Oceans 27. It’s a big one and the biggest we’ve ever put on. We have national and international pop rock bands and DJs going from 8pm till late. It’s a full moon, it’s a public holiday, it’s on the beach and it’s our party of the decade. BE THERE EARLY and don’t miss a beat. Proceeds go to the Pink Ribbon Charity for breast cancer awareness and research. Read more details about that show and many other events around town over the next two weeks in this week’s What’s On and HereNow sections inside.

Martin East W
ord of The Rock Bar’s unique setting and divine surroundings has spread rapidly since it was first opened last year, each day bringing a strong afternoon crowd ready to soak up the sunset with a cocktail in hand, and together, salute the end of the day. Providing the right soundtrack to the occasion has been a priority from the start and now this roofless venue has a resident DJ fit to suit. Martin East has moved through some interesting entertainment avenues throughout his life, playing a role in ‘Titanic’ being a stand-out conversation starter. There are certainly no disappointments with his current position though. The Beat pulled up some cliff space for a chat before his sun-set… So the acting career, was it a path you were pursuing from childhood or something you fell into through circumstance? Well, I was a singer at first - London Boy Singers - I sang at all the cool places: Albert Hall - St Paul’s Cathedral – this segued into acting when nature took its course and my voice dropped 5 octaves overnight. Was it a slow transition from acting work into DJing or a moment’s decision to switch direction? It was more a matter of necessity. Living in LA, I needed something to do on the side to make money. I didn’t want to do the cliched thing of waiting tables - so I gave it a spin so to speak. Funny thing is, the moment I started to do it, that was it. One career for me. I did one gig, my first at a friend’s party. Someone came up and asked me to play the following week at Barfly. Did that. Manager came up and asked me to play regularly Tuesdays and Saturdays. Before I knew it I was a

professional DJ, which was great, but I never owned a record, headphones, anything. I had been using my friend’s gear and records. Within a year I opened for Oaky in Vegas on NYE for Ministry of Sound. Sometimes you just gotta go with the flow. It worked out for me I think. Were you satisfied with your acting career or was it a constant guessing game for what the future would bring? It was kind of weird, I was making a lot of money and having great success but I was pretty miserable. It started as something that I would have travelled a million miles to do for free – but I ended up bitching and moaning in a Jacuzzi in Mexico about not being called in to shoot, whilst getting paid thousands of dollars to do it. When it comes to producing tracks what is your creative process?
hereNOW
c. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemi I have no formula. I wake up, switch on the computer and just have a go at it. Just finished a cinematic project - the act is called Wee Beastie. That album is about to drop. I let each song or remix talk to me. I like to get a groove first and go from there. When did you first decide to set up your own label Kapa Music, and how did this make a difference to your position on the electronic scene? Well, as I tell every musician/DJ that wants to make the leap to being known and respected, you have to release music. Kapa is my second label. It is just basically me and my partner Christos Kedras in LA. But we have had some great success in the last few years. We just needed a voice to convey what we had to say. Making money was not the point. Being proud of everything that we put out: that is the goal. There’s been a lot of traveling for you thanks to your success on the decks. Where have you played that has left the biggest impact on you? Without question, touring South Africa with Rocco last year changed me. I have never felt music loved like that. House Music in its deepest, most soulful form speaks straight to their souls and that feeling at gig after gig was tangible. Watch out for their rising stars Black Coffee and Culoe De Song. (I have a track with Coffee that we are working on.) Ever gotten back on the plane and thought “Get me out of here!”
What’s on your wish list for things you’d like to achieve while living here? Really want to develop a deeper more spiritual vibe that people can get into on a dance level. I am moving away from the harder sounds into slower evolving grooves. I’m also committed to working with local artists and singers. Create some Bali Organika... some music that comes from here and belongs here - but speaks to everyone. Can we expect to hear some new sounds creeping into your music production thanks to an Indonesian influence? I already made a track with Mr Raden, a musician from Tengagnen. I am looking for a Balinese singer to make dance and downtempo tracks with. Also working with a young guy to groom him as a producer here called DJ Yuki, good kid - keep your eye out for him. How would you define your sound when you play a Rock Bar set? I like to mix it up and play my soundtrack to the sunset. Current faves include Bonobo, Prins Thomas, Little Dragon, Idjut Boys and Todd Terje to name a few. I try to complement the natural power of the sunset and the special bar without overwhelming it. As the evening unfolds you can look forward to some Deep House, some Rare Grooves and some Nu Disco... But my ultimate sunset track is Donnie Hathaway - Someday We’ll All Be Free...
Australia. I know there are a lot of Aussies here but they gave me so much crap getting in the country and then the bouncer at the club in Sydney wouldn’t let me in because I was wearing trainers (even though I was the headline DJ!). But I am going back this year - maybe with Ralf Gum to do some gigs… So let’s see. Got everything but the Rubber Glove treatment last time I was there! With all your success as a producer and DJ back in the States, what led you to make the move to Bali? Well, in a nutshell, a woman (my lady, Sonya). The spirit of Bali and its people. The Rock Bar is a World Class Venue and I wanted to put my musical touch to it. Who could pass up an opportunity like that?
Martin plays each Friday, Saturday and Sunday at The Rock Bar, Ayana Resort from 5pm.

BOY GEORGE Oceans 27 Sun 30 May 7pm
Sounds Like Club Acoustic Pop Hails From UK
Has Been Ever heard of George Alan O’Dowd? Probably not. But we reckon you’ll be more than familiar with the name ‘Boy George’. A 1980s British pop icon, the outrageous make-up sporting star was responsible for chart-busting hits such as ‘Karma Chameleon’ and ‘Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?’ with his group, Culture Club, and also featured in the massive line-up of 80s superstars that sang Bob Geldof’s charity single ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ The next two decades have seen Boy George collaborating with huge dance acts, such as Faithless and Groove Armada and mixing compilation discs for Ministry of Sound and Fantazia. West End musical ‘Taboo’ was based on Boy George’s life and was a huge success, earning him a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical Score. His track ‘When Will You Learn’ was Grammy-nominated in ’99 also. A period of infamy ensued, where drugs, scandal and a stint in prison dominated UK tabloid headlines, but now it seems that the super-talented Boy is back on track and doing what he does best… is Now After recording with top British music producer, Mark Ronson, (who has also dueted with the likes of Lily Allen, the Kaiser Chiefs and Amy Winehouse), Boy George is about to release a new album ‘Extraordinary Alien’, initially available on his website (www.boygeorgeuk.com) only, as a limited promotional CD. He’ll be touching down in Bali soon to play at Oceans 27 on the 30th May… and is not to be missed.

nniversary. Double Six 23rd Anniversary. Double Six 23rd Anniversary. Double Six 23rd Anniversary
Double Six 23rd Anniversary sat 5 June 11 pm
Roger Shah At which point in your career do you believe you scored the biggest break? Any particular moment that stands out? I think that it was probably my single ‘Lost’ or maybe everything in 2008 that led up to that single. It was voted the No. 1 track of the year on A State of Trance the most popular trance radio show in the world, which was the culmination of an incredible year. Strangely though it’s really only the last 12 months that I feel that my life has changed dramatically. Are there other areas of music that you would like to explore someday? Any closet dreams to sing for a punk band or compose vocal melodies for a Gregorian Monk outfit?
048 | beatmag.com
As a man whose talent appeals to thousands of people across the globe, Roger Shah’s deep love for the melodies of trance have pushed him to the top of his creative game. He’s stepping up to the Double Six hotplate to headline their huge 23rd Anniversary line-up and it’s set to be a scorcher for all you dance floor junkies. The Beat got a Rogering before party time…
Ha – I love it! Those are mental images indeed... Why not go all out and go Gregorian punk?! The ultimate in out-there hybrid music! At this place and time I’m very happy indeed moving back and forward between the twin worlds of trance and chill-out (of which I do a lot). In terms of the future I think the motto is ‘never say never to anything’. Who knows what music I’ll be making in 20 years? Bringing a live element to your sets is obviously something that you see as an important aspect of performance. We’re expecting to see a keyboard by your side at Double Six, are there any other tricks that have been added to your sets lately?
y. Double Six 23rd Anniversary. Double Six 23rd Anniversary. Double Six 23rd Anniversary. Double Yes, it’s very important indeed as performance is everything to me. In terms of adding things in on top of that I am always thinking about new ideas. However when I start with additions like the keyboard I don’t add them in lightly – I’m looking for something that will prevail over time and even to become somewhat symbolic of what I do. So I’d have to be really certain in my own mind that whatever comes in next is going to work in the overall performance. Having released a score of successful productions over the years, are there any tracks that hold a deeper personal meaning for you than others? Hmmm. Good question. I don’t think I’d say that my answer runs heavily deep, (in a personal, life changing way) but on six out of every seven days I’d say ‘Lost’ and ‘Found’. They both feature Zara on vocals, the latter being my new single, and in essence, something of a sequel to my most popular track. I guess there is a symbiosis between the tracks that does go deeper than just the title and ties together a short, but very significant period in my life. As far as remixes go, do you often request to remix someone’s work or is it usually vice versa? Who have been some of your favorite artists to remix? I do remixes from time to time but honestly, these days I really prefer to work on my own productions. It might sound funny but I really know where I am with my own music. I start a track and right from the off I know exactly which direction I want it to go. The closest I think I come is when I collaborate with other artists. When you share a production credit it kind of becomes something akin to a remix. How would you describe your creative process when it comes to writing music? As I said earlier, I’m really single-minded when it comes to my productions. When I sit down it’s a simple ‘vibe’ thing. Am I feeling something chilled? Something more melodic? Or something euphoric? I typically start with the beats – finding the right kick is absolutely essential and then when I’m happy I’ve got something I like I’ll try working melody ideas over the top. It kind of rolls on from there really… If I’m collaborating with someone, it’s different - more of a shared ethic. For example I’ve just done a second track with Signum and
that again is the almost perfect 50/50 split between his heavy uplift sound and my melodics – it kind of meets in the middle. The first one, ‘Healesville Sanctuary’, very much found its place on the dance floor and I think the new one should do the same. Now that you have a rather jam-packed calendar and the demand is high, do you still manage to cut loose and party with the best of them or is that a lifestyle that was left behind when you took the ‘DJ’ from in front of your name? You know, I’m a pretty professional guy - when I go somewhere to perform I’m solely concentrated on getting the party going for others. So the partying I do is more when I get home. Usually after a longer tour away when I’ll call my friends, sometimes my work colleagues if they’re around and we’ll go to one of the many great bars in my town. That’s where I do my partying! What’s got you fired up for 2010? Quite a lot, Ibiza naturally! Aside from that though I’ve got a party coming up on Ganuba Beach in Cyprus which is a solo Shah thing – I’m very much looking forward to that. People sometimes question these things but for a DJ to be able to steer the entire musical course of a night is a very wonderful thing. My music is ‘Balearic trance’, but by its definition, that covers a lot of ground. Trance across a huge tempo range is played in Ibiza - everywhere from the beach to the bar to the club – that’s a lot of ‘places’ that a DJ can take people. I think it should be a very special night in Cyprus! Roger’s new compilation album ‘Magic Island – Music For Balearic People Vol 3’ will be out on June 11th. In the meantime, get to Double Six for their monster 23rd Anniversary, and get entranced…

Travelling has played a huge part in his life, which is what he has been doing for the last six years. The experiences he’s had have helped infuse his music with different sounds - Asia in particular, with its burgeoning dance scene, has provided him with the influence for deep/funky electro beats with a mashed-up sound. is Now Now a Bali regular at venues like Deja’vu, The Living Room and of course, Double Six, Erik Sahl’s rules are simple: keep it funky, with delicious basslines and electro sounds.

Changes Are Afoot
3
Many lunchtime sandwich lovers may have noticed Oberoi’s Junction restaurant has recently adopted a new look. Overnight it changed from a bustling hot spot to a demolition site. The owner told the beat The Junction is headed for a new concept in interior and exterior design, but he also said that fans of The Junction’s famed sandwiches and salads need not worry, as the menu will still remain, plus some new additions. If all goes well, The Junction will re-open sometime in June. Another venue to make changes in the past weeks was our old fave, Petitenget’s Hu’u Bar. They have completely remodeled the DJ booth and bar area, added a special VIP section and it looks great. It’s still being completed while we speak and should be 100% finished very soon. Renewed and refreshed with Dimas now in the fray, it’s definitely worth a look. The much anticipated W Resort, also in Petitenget, is fast approaching completion with the date set for opening to be in November this year. We had the inside info last week that the resort’s dining and partying venues will be open to the public and look set to take the island’s entertainment levels up to new heights. Beachside dining and entertaining are going to get a much overdue shot in the arm. Another interesting turn up are the new late night bars popping up around town. The Gallery has quickly become a hit on the late 3am time slot (to the probable dismay of the owners) but with a quality setup this venue on Jl. Dewi Sri is making headroads into a notoriously competitive market. The Cave, on Petitenget, (the name does sound very familiar) has also been getting some heads through their door and Devine Wonderland opened grandly last week putting some alternative rock tunes back into a music bar for the first time since electronic took over everything. It’s always good to see people appreciating something new in da hood.

On the second floor, the first ever ‘Gogo shower’ in Indonesia was showcased, something best to be seen rather than explained. On the music side, there was DJ Teddy Tabaco on the decks to heat up the mood for this opening celebration. May the Face be with you...

feature Local Spotlight Taking a closer look at some talented individuals in our midst. This week...
Igo Blado Now one of Bali’s indie music icons, a producer and gig master, Igo is well known for his role in the local music industry. The Beat took some time out for a topical chat... So Igo, at what point in your life did you first fall in love with music? Since the day my older brother played me that Tom Sawyer track, ‘Rush’. I was in 5th grade at school. Since then I regularly bought one album or compilation cassette every single week – one that had been recommended in the media – to fulfill my curiosity in music. I also started to play musical instruments at high school, performing on stage etc.
078 | beatmag.com
Tell us about your two companies, ‘The Blado Showbiz’ and ‘The Blado Beatsmith’… Blado (formed from the words ‘black’ and ‘dog’) was my dog’s name. I have gone by this name myself since 2006, which was the year I produced the band Devalli’s album called ‘Kisah Lalu’, a compilation CD called ‘The Skipped Tracks’ and a video compilatiaon as well titled ‘Video Kami’. Then in 2007, I developed The Blado Showbiz, which is concerned with events management and execution. It is mainly involved with the local indie movement. We have held 80 gigs to date. Meanwhile, The Blado Beatsmith is focusing on the minor-label movement to help produce local talents. Under the Blado Beatsmith flag, 7 albums have been produced already: The Skipped Tracks, Video Kami, Devalli ‘Kisah Lalu’, De Buntu ‘Fun The Mental’, Moshpit Mavericks, Ed Eddy & Residivis ‘Lagu Kita Orang Indonesia’, and Dialog Dini Hari ‘Beranda Taman Hati’. This last album became a success by working with a distribution label called De Majors in Jakarta.
Indonesian artists were well appreciated at the Junk Awards 09 at Pixel Media Asia [South East nonmainstream music awards]. Salute! [ http://sites.junkonline.net/junksounds/ ] You’ve also had your own band Telephone on the scene since 2003 in which you’re on rhythm guitar and vocals, how are things going with you guys? Telephone is still struggling to get out from the ‘Episode Koma’ (previous album) era, but will do in a vehicle that you’ll find out about soon.
“On Indonesia’s
You seem to be very concerned with the music movement generally and the indie scene in particular. What led you to take on this mission? Firstly, I set foot into the music scene and now I can’t turn back to anything else. I’ve tried a few times to hang up my guitar and to give myself a break, but it never lasts that long. In any other position or role I have had, I always come back to this. Secondly, I have zero doubt about the local indie musicians’ quality and talent. They are very good. It’s just those classic problems that get in the way: money and distribution. The musicians are all well connected with each other anyway. Three things for a mantra, that will change the music scene? Honesty, belief, and being responsible. That’s it. It’s not always about creative artworks, but we do have to appreciate each other’s art as well. So what’s your perspective on the movement of the music scene in Bali? Is it on the way up or down? 2009 was a pretty sad year. In Bali itself, the number of albums actually released was pretty low. The aim of the band is sometimes just to survive. Regeneration doesn’t work anymore. Not many bands really ‘come up to the surface’. On Indonesia’s mainstream music map it seems that everyone is drowning in similarity. But thankfully,
mainstream music map it seems that everyone is drowning in similarity.” We’ve heard some fuzz about ‘Supersonik’ being the new album for Telephone, can you spill some beans? Yes. We are currently putting together ‘Supersonic’ as a vehicle for us to explore new freedom with our music. As far out and fast as we can. The album will be our 4th album, and our 2nd self-produced album. If aliens suddenly took over and forbid music on earth, what would Igo do? I’d recommend they listen to the Alien Ant Farm CD. Sometimes music is an answer of the heart, do you agree? I agree. Because music is prayer. What’s in store for 2010 for Igo Blado? Besides the ultra ambition for Supersonic, Igo Blado will be putting in the maximum effort needed to move forward. Producing a television program? Music? Whatever it is, Igo Blado will stay true in it!

Not Just a Nightclub more than just a nightclub, Vi Ai Pi also dishes up some fine dining delights. The Beat’s Tosca checks it out…
Vi Ai Pi Jl. Legian Kuta t. 750425
W
hen walking down Legian street, it can be pretty hard to hear your own thoughts sometimes. The blaring bass beats, live bands and shouts of street sellers and partygoers are what best characterize this area come night-time. So you can see why promoting venue Vi Ai Pi as a fine dining establishment might prove to be quite a task. Try it out though, and you’ll most likely be sold.
088 | beatmag.com
The new management at Vi Ai Pi are focusing on a new concept – a complete overhaul of the previous image. No longer just a nightclub, this place is now all about the food before midnight. Walking up the stairs and off the street, you are presented with an oasis of calm in comparison to the hustle and bustle below. The dancing flames of candles that line the staircase and sit atop the
tables contrast strongly against the predominantly black décor, creating a super-sexy and stylish ambience. The trendy bar in the middle of the space acts as a divider between the restaurant and cocktail area. Behind the bar, stairs lead up to the ‘midnight lounge’; an area that comes to life with dancers and a DJ every night from 12-3am. In the restaurant area itself, a stage that overlooks the street, has been set up to play host to a range of bands, that entertain customers from 9pm ‘til midnight every night of the week. It’s not quite time for the band yet though, so with the chilled sounds of sunset-style grooves in our ears, we take to our super-comfy black cushioned seats, pick up some fancy ergonomically-designed cutlery and a fancy menu to match. The menu has been developed by Balinese-born Chef Arie. After working on a UK-based cruise ship for 3 years, he’s been heading up the kitchen in Vi Ai Pi since November 2009 and has played a big part in the changes that have taken place. We study our options under the light of a half moon, which is clearly visible in the open-air part of the restaurant. There is an eclectic range of dishes available that offer something for everyone, including Pastas and Noodles, Soups and Salads, a ‘Recommended’ section and a variety of Mediterranean dishes, along with several other main course choices. You can try Greek Moussaka, Souvlaki or Spanish Seafood Paella for 80K, French Coq au Vin for 70K, or a vegetarian Italian dish, Aubergine Parmagiana for 60K. Braised Lamb Shank and Australian beef steaks feature in the Recommended section.
contained shrimp, carrot, lettuce, chives and rice noodles. The appetizers were the perfect size to satisfy that initial hunger you feel when entering a restaurant, without bloating us - which was a good thing, as both main courses were to die for. First was the Crispy Peking Duck (90K) – which came recommended by Chef Arie and is one of the most popular dishes with customers. The duck was cooked to perfection, succulent and tender with crispy skin and glazed with a sweet oyster sauce. It was served with steamed rice, Bok Choy and a Hoi Sin sauce. We also sampled the Grilled Australian Tenderloin Steak (125K), which was mouthwateringly juicy, tastily seasoned and served on a bed of potato with grilled mushrooms, green salad and pepper sauce. There’s no excuse for not fitting in a dessert when they’re as delicious as the ones on the Vi Ai Pi menu. Try the Bali Banana Split (30K); a Bali-style twist on the old favorite in the form of banana tempura (deep fried banana), whose potentially uber-sweet factor was balanced out nicely with a scoop of refreshing vanilla ice cream. Last, but definitely not least, was the luxuriously indulgent Chocolate Brownie (35K), which combined the rich, chocolatey, nutty flavours of the brownie with chocolate ice cream and a caramelized sugar decoration, whose taste was reminiscent of toffee apple coating. Dessert heaven. So, no more wandering past Vi Ai Pi and assuming (wrongly) that it’s just another nightclub with regulation fast-food style dishes to suit people’s party munchies. Because it really is so much more…
We kicked our meal off with a refreshing little starter – the Mango and Crabmeat Salad (25K), Tosca and the Vi Ai Pi Rice Paper Rolls (also 25K), which beatmag.com | 089

Kaleidescape M500 Movie Player Rips Blu-Ray Discs Kaleidescape’s just announced another line of high end home entertainment products -- this time it’s the M300 and M500 Blu-ray players. The M500 also boasts Blu-ray copying abilities, too -- allowing you to import Blu-rays, DVDs and CDs onto your server at home. In an interesting decision, Kaleidescape will require that the physical Blu-ray disc be present for playback from the server -- which, you may be thinking, rather defeats the purpose, doesn’t it? Pretty much. Thankfully, Kaleidescape’s got a disc loader in the works which will allow you to keep a “large number” of discs ready in the system for faster loading. www.gizmodo.com the M300 running $2,495 and the M500 at $3,995.

The World is My Stage
Mireki Jasmine Okubo Choreographer, Dancer Born: Turkey, 1987
Conceptual Basics
Combining her skills of Balinese dance (and other Indonesian dance) with Modern Contemporary dance, Jasmine has created her own style of energetic performance. Using her well-trained Balinese dancing background, she is able to command a splendid onstage presence, resulting in a beautiful choreographed performance.
Background
Visiting Bali at the age of 3, she was intrigued by the Balinese dance and immediately told her parents that she wanted to become a Balinese dancer. Taking her first Balinese dancing lessons when she was only 9 years old, she eventually became a member of Sekaa Gong Bina Remaja a few years later. Having performed various traditional dances such as Legong Kraton, Taruna Jaya, Kebyar Duduk, Oleg Tambulilingan, Kupu-Kupu Tarum and Ramayana, she eventually entered the National University of Arts in Bali as a special student at the age of 16 years old.

French DJ Norman Doray, spun out his money-making set of HouseProgressive and Disco tracks at the decks of Dragonfly on the 14th of May. Warming up the crowd that night was DJ Aay, before Norman entered the booth. A unique event before Bob Sinclair performs later this month, having a DJ that was inspired by Bob himself performing at the very same venue before him.
