ometimes it takes a while to sink in, but eventually, the idea does come pounding home well and proper— live music doesn’t mix with DJ electronic. Or maybe it does in the right circumstance and situation, but last week’s Beat Party, besides getting kinda caught up in its own self importance, ran into trouble with the physical limitations of the rain, traffic, possibly the line up and equipment problems and delays etc, and poor old DJ Dade brought an early close to proceedings as it dwindled to a slow demise. We were trying to mix too much on the same plate and this time I believe we learnt from it. We hope that everyone who did go along last week to celebrate the beat’s tenth anniversary enjoyed themselves and I have no doubt they did. A big thank you goes out to the sponsors for their support. Now, we look to the future and this next two week period staring us in the face. Besides the usual feed of the best DJs and live music coming to town from all over the country and world, this weekend one of the biggest shows on earth rears its head again after a four year hibernation, and that’s none other than the World Cup. Just about every bar in town is heaving the mega screens into place and tuning them into the correct channel for televising it live and strong….to a bevy of loyal fans that are on holiday and live here. Be prepared for some late nights over the next month, but for now, the best part begins; the round of qualifying games where we get to see who’s on fire and who’s not. May the best team win on the night. Check the What’s On and HereNow inside this week’s beat for all the details on where to go and what to do and enjoy your holiday or the next two weeks of fun times in Bali.

ho would have thought

classical training would lead to worldwide electronic anthems and a high demand for remixing the likes of fischerspooner and mariah carey? SOmetimes a little hard spent geek time pays off for the cool cats. The Beat chatted to Michael about life as a designer drug, while theo was probably off studying something medical...

So the name. Simply a reflection of the nightlife and all its disco Pacman popping glory, or is there a story behind why you chose it? I read about it in an anti-drug book at middle school and the name stuck in my head. I just thought it sounded cool and had a good ring to it, and it fitted the project at the time. How did the two of you come to know each other? Chicken before the egg or music before the friendship?

044 | beatmag.com

We became friends due to similar interests in music. Mutual friends, the usual. As your success has grown I imagine your time together would have reached Siamese twin heights. Have you guys learnt to adopt each other’s bad habits or are you forced to give each other space when needed? A bit of both but we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses so we try to make the most of those. Who has their hands on which wheel in the studio? Has it been a natural flow from the start or were

there initial times of cramping each other’s style that needed to be worked through? Sometimes we write the songs alone. I have done a lot completely by myself and so has Theo. When we get together we just take turns. I do most of the mixing and mastering because Theo is extremely busy with medical school. Where do you find the most satisfaction? Touring, producing, playing big rooms or cutting loose at private parties? Definitely writing songs. I love writing songs and that’s all I ever wanted to do but DJing is definitely the best way to be rewarded for the hard work of making songs. Most memorable moments of the last year? DJing in Asia. Being in Hong Kong was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life. I just got over jet lag and had a big window in my shower that I opened and had a great view of the city skyscrapers and the weather was beautiful. It was an amazing experience. It can’t be put into words. You’ve remixed tracks for many huge artists; who are you most proud to say you’ve worked for/with?

“...we know each other’s strengths and weakness’ so we try to make the most of those” Touring extensively must have created some special memories or favourite venues/cities? I really love walking around Barcelona and skateboarding at the art museum. That was the best moment I have experienced while on tour but there have been so many amazing nights at the clubs it’s hard to say. What’s happening on the New York scene right now? Anything interesting that we can expect to see moving overseas? SEX CULT RECORDS! Who do you guys admire for pushing boundaries today? The Bloody Beetroots, Salem, Crystal Castles.

Annie, Little Boots, Mariah Carey, IAMX, Flo Rida.

Who do you look back on as breaking ground in the past? Any quiet heroes you hail?

What’s the biggest cock-up you’ve ever experienced during a live set? Any stand out moments where it all went wrong?

I enjoy looking back at the evolution of drum and bass. So many ground-breaking artists that inspired me and led me to believe there will always be something new.

Once it was really crazy and people were climbing onto the stage and dancing and the tables almost fell off into the crowd, but the sound engineer and myself caught everything and nothing came unplugged. Do you guys see the advancement of digital technology being a positive door opener for the DJ world or has it brought with it a wave of lazy players, filling up clubs like wet sponges? Technology always has its pros and cons. You just need to embrace it as contemporary culture.

046 | beatmag.com

How would you describe your sound? What can we expect to hear at Deja’vu? Heavy, new, punk electronica. Just expect stage diving and lots of people jumping up and down. I think the energy will be nuts! Designer Drugs will be bringing their musical high to Deja’vu on the 11th of June so get down there for a taste of the goods.

Bored of ‘fresh-off-the-plane’ tourists who think that having enough cash to rent a scooter gives them the right to drive like idiots? Thought as much… So suffer no longer! Get on down to Eikon’s ‘respect the island’ and make a stand against the krappier side of Kuta. Aimed at encouraging “locals and tourists to unite for a better and respected Bali” the organizers hope to promote a little splash of love, peace and understanding amongst Kuta’s inhabitants. Ensuring that the event goes anything other than peacefully, a host of local acts will keep things rocking out on stage while campaigning against the sort of daily incidents of disrespect that we all see far too often on the streets. Keeping the crowd going will be new-skool rockabilly act Suicidal Sinatra, the Latin influenced punk of Devildice, and the throat-ripping metal of The Last One. Not to mention reggae kingpins Legawa and the home-grown Hip Hop of Black Masker Krew. Presided over by legendary Poppies MCs Far and Berto and with a 25k beer cover charge as well as 5k Heineken on tap between 11-12pm you may be forgiven for getting a little rowdy. Rock Loud and Tattoo War

S

urabaya-based rock band Blingsatan held a launching party last Friday at Hard Rock for their latest album titled “Melodi Emosi”. To enhance the atmosphere a tattoo show was held in the corner of the café with various tattoo artists showcasing their artistic skills on skin, plus some brain bending body suspension, accompanied by thrashing rock music in the background provided by Crucial Conflict, Fight Back and The Last One. At the end of the tattoo show, Devildice lead by Jerinx rocked the crowd, before Blingsatan closed the show with their latest pounding tracks.

T

his year’s Beat Party kicked off with the Beat Awards 2010 being presented in the restaurant area of Oceans 27. It was then onto the beach stage for a band and DJ jam out. There were some heavy delays thanks to early rain and a bass drum being destroyed in the first live set, but the bands played on thanks to the patience of The S.I.G.I.T and NAIF before taking their live energy to the stage. Fashion shows and lazer dancers filled the gaps before DJ Dade closed the show. A big thanks to all of the sponsors for their support.

feature The Bali Brawl is on for a second round of in your face cage fighting and the competitors are raring to go. As a Mixed Martial Arts tournament, the scope for more action and a wider combination of moves means this sport is well worth getting out of your seat for, so ready your fists and prepare to see some head to head combat as adrenaline meets willpower and skill. the beat caught up with two of the fighters before they faced the cage… How often do you train and how seriously do you take this sport? Vas: I train 8-10 times a week when I’m preparing for a fight. I take it seriously but remember to have fun. Haylee: I train every day. I don’t take it too seriously but we’ll see! What first attracted you to such an intense contact sport? Vas: It was just a progression from training in boxing and BJJ. I was a big fan of MMA and when approached just thought I’d give it a crack. Haylee: I just fell into it when I was protecting myself and I protected myself really well… When did you first compete in a fight and what were the results? Vas: October 2006. I won via K.O. Haylee: I first competed when I was 16 and I knocked the girl out! What are three of the most important rules you follow when you’re facing an opponent? Vas: I don’t really have any rules, just train hard, do the right things and don’t take anyone lightly. Haylee: Keep my hands up, and win. What has been your most adrenaline infused and exhilarating moment to date? Vas: It would be between surfing big Shipsterns and walking out in front of a big home crowd about to fight. Haylee: It would have been a street fight with this crazy woman and a knife, I thought I was gonna die…

086 | beatmag.com

And the moment you’d least likely want to repeat? Vas: Wearing one on the head at Shipsterns. Haylee: I wouldn’t want to repeat the knife fight! What is your personal trademark move? Vas: Close my eyes and swing with my right. Haylee: Sweep kick. If you were to have a reputation for one thing what would it be? Vas: Being a hairy, cheap drunk. Haylee: One person said “hardest Chick in B town.” Not sure what my rep is, I guess it depends on who you’re talking to. What have you learned about your own fighting style compared to others by competing in MMA tournaments? Vas: I think I need to relax more and gain more experience. Haylee: This is my first MMA cage fight but from other fights I have learnt that I have spirit. How seriously do you take this sport and how far would you like to go with it? Vas: I take it very seriously. I think I would just be wasting people’s time if I didn’t. I would love to go overseas with my fighting and see how I fare on the international stage. Haylee: The future has yet to tell… Any Mister Miyagi in your life? Personal mentor? Vas: No, not really. I look up to a lot of different people, not one person in particular. Haylee: Yes Richard and Travis from mirah gym.

Does your training harness any philosophies that run throughout all aspects of your life? Vas: Try and be honest to yourself, don’t look for excuses. Haylee: Never back down. What is it about fighting that brings you the most satisfaction? Vas: Getting a win after putting in weeks of hard training is very satisfying. Haylee: Sponsors (Seedless), getting fit , feeling healthy and knowing I can stand up for myself even if the opponent is bigger. I know I won’t go down without a fight. Anything to add? Vas: I can’t wait to get back to Bali... Haylee: Kids Don’t try this at Home! I don’t promote fighting, but I believe you should always be able to protect yourself and stand up for yourself. It’s cool to see a new event happening in Bali and I’m excited to be a part of it.

The Bali Brawl will be staining the walls at Mirah Silver Boxing, 81 Jl Majapahit, Kuta. Tickets are 150K general admission and 200K priority seating. Get down to a 69 Slam store or Hammerhead fitness for presale or call 081999406800 for delivery or extra info.

Top

Bali band, Superman Is Dead packed up their kit last year and quit their adopted home of Poppies Lane’s Twice Bar for a rampage around the U.S of A. This documentary-style DVD follows the boys along the way as they bring their brand of tattoo’d hot’n’heavy punk to venues large and small across America. The disc includes footage of the band playing on the Vans ‘Warped’ tour as well as the ‘From Bali with Rock’ tour and showcases both old and new tracks from their catalogue. With a heavy dose of Jackass style prankery and hotel-room mischief, it’s plain to see that a couple of months on the road was clearly a blast for Bobby Cool (lead vocals and guitar), Eka Rock (bass and backing vocals), Jrx (drums) and the rest of the S.i.D entourage. Some of the more interesting moments between performances include a stop off to meet the Indonesian ambassador in Washington for a chat and a spot of Nasi Goreng, as well as meeting a few dedicated Indonesian expat fans. The dialogue is a mixture of English and Indonesian, with plenty of commentary and insight into the day-to-day routines of an Indonesian band on tour overseas. If you’re a fan then this DVD is not to be missed.

REVIEW

Sitting On Top of the World…at RGW. Tosca takes a trip back to Anantara, this time to sample the über-cool delights of the Rooftop Grill and Wine restaurant...

098| | beatmag.com 98

Anantara’s rooftop restaurant RGW (Rooftop Grill & Wine), may demand the excessive use of a thesaurus for this fortnight’s food review, because at the risk of sounding like a simpleton the only word I can think of right now is ‘cool’. Clearly I’m going to have to do much better than that to convey the multitude of delights that this place has to offer, so… here goes. On the fourth floor rooftop of five star Anantara resort, you will step out of the elevator into the popular SOS bar. Walking across the wooden floors, past the incredibly professional and efficient staff and the huge bar with its funky blue lighting, you’ll find yourself on top of the world, looking out of a long, open-fronted room at the beautiful Seminyak sunset as the oranges, pinks and occasional purples of the sky streak across the horizon. The remaining rays of light catch the water below and sparkle, creating

RGW (Rooftop Grill & Wine) Anantara Resort Seminyak Jl. Abimanyu (Dhyana Pura) Seminyak Tel. 737773

Snacks are also available to accompany your cocktails such as a satay combo (Angus beef, jumbo prawns and chicken) presented on a mini charcoal burner (85K) and seasoned potato wedges with sour cream and sweet chili dip (40K). On the subject of cocktails, good luck choosing one – or any drink for that matter – as the choice is truly vast. In addition to the snack menu, RGW also boasts a full ‘Spanish Sensations’ tapas menu. Inspired by the food of Spanish chef Ferran Adrian, who has three Michelin stars under his belt, this section of the menu allows customers to select a two or three course option for 480K++ and 540K++ respectively. In the short time RGW has been open, the atmosphere, music and exotic menu offers much for those seeking quality dining with an ambience to match and with such a great bar area, you’ll find it hard to head anywhere else once your meal has been imbibed.

a truly magical image. Sloping glass ceilings, huge mirrors and ‘infinity pool’ style water features at the very edge of the rooftop create the illusion that you are surrounded by sky and sea. The appreciation of style here is acknowledged by the Fashion TV channel, which is showing silently on the big screen. Waves breaking on the sand below punctuate the sound of animated chatter and the chilled, funky, sunset grooves coming from the speakers. A mixture of clientele is in at this time. Some in designer shades who have flocked in from the beach below to relax on the huge red beds for sunset cocktails and snacks, and some people who have made it home to shower and change in time for a full evening of wining and dining at RGW and SOS. Primarily a grill restaurant, the choices for a main course meal consist mostly of either grilled seafood or meat and being lucky enough to sample one of the most extravagant selections from the menu (the fillet mignon center cut @260K), it was hard to decline. This lean and naturally tender cut is simply flavored, not overpowering the flavors of the meat and being cooked to your liking adds to the magnificence of the meal. beatmag.com | 099

C

oca-Cola isn’t exactly a stranger to parties or major events, and now they’ve launched a new innovation in the world of public service, the Coca-Cola Party Service. To kick it off there was a day of activities, music and good times held at Bali Zoo on Sunday May 23rd. Games were played, door prizes were given out and a bunch of local bands got their talent out, playing live and loud to the crowd. Those rocking the stage included; The Ladjang, Symphony of Silence, In Utero, Reason Alive, The Room, Electra Project, The Simpsons, The Rolic, Car’borbike, Valium, The Gubrak, and D’Voolmond - all hailing from the depths of Kuta’s Twice Bar. Visitors to the Zoo were able to grab free cold drinks from the Coca-Cola crew before heading in to check out the animal attractions. Both Area Sales Manager Horeca S. Adi Nugroho

0102| beatmag.com 102 |

and Coca-Cola’s Event Manager Wahyu Trikuryanto were there to launch the new service and Ari said that “the Coca-Cola Party Service is designed to help the public make their party complete.” The idea of the new service is to provide the essentials for setting up a great bash. A Coca-Cola express car, banners and tent can all be provided for your event along with a selection of beverage packages. Expect to see the Coca-Cola party service present at major events throughout Bali from now on, as well as at your own private event if you’re after some extra support. The idea itself stems from Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia Balinusa Operation General Manager Sani Dwi Prasetya, who believes that wherever you find a great event, you’ll find Coca-Cola. Soulscape

– the Treasure of Spiritual Art

A group exhibition showcasing the abstract works of art by seven artists who are featured in the book titled “Soulscape - The Treasure of Spiritual Art”. Apart from the title of the book (in its second edition) which will be released during this exhibition, the word ‘Soulscape’ also describes the visual differences of what is perceived by our visual senses compared to what is seen by our spirit or soul. A unique aspect of this project was that all artists were required to complete at least one work of art on a specified canvas size of 10 meters in length.
