Well, haven’t we been enjoying the best of weather lately? Those beautiful blue skies have been recharging the batteries of everybody in town and especially all the holiday folk on the island for the Easter holidays. Let’s hope it keeps on going for a few months yet. Last week the Bali Spirit Festival arrived back to Ubud bringing a healthy, holistic mindset and a festival carnival atmosphere to the hillside town. New agers, old hippies and people interested in a healthy alternative viewpoint flooded Ubud both day and night for almost five days. The festival, after five years of being held, was bigger than ever and soulful and beautiful feelings permeated the already tranquil ambience of Ubud for another positive weekend in March. No doubt a fair bit of that eat, pray, love stuff was in abundance too. The music events in particular have something for everyone and you would do well to make a point of heading up there next year if you’ve never been before. We have a complete wrap up of the event inside. Tina Ardie features in this edition and the lady that spends half her life organizing and promoting events and the other being our number one magazine competitor in town, has a lot to say about the ways of promotion on this island. It’s been a long time coming, but here she is all wrapped up in a Beat double page spread courtesy of Mr. Dethu. Once again we have a veritable truck load of hot acts coming our way over the next two weeks. There is a flood of international DJs on the way and a storm of mainly Indonesian live acts blasting some venues. With all the beautiful weather invading our lives during the day, it’s comforting to know that there is some respite from the day time heat with these more than cool performers in town. Check the Mainstage and Regular What’s On along with the HereNow sections inside for all the juice and have a great two weeks on the island of Bali.

nkotbsb coming to jakarta Do you remember the 80s boyband called New Kids On The Block? A group from Boston that was formed by Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Danny Wood and Joe McIntyre, hit the big lights with the massive success of their album Hangin’ Tough that was released in 1988. Since then NKOTB became the benchmark for high quality boyband music and they performed in Jakarta just a few years ago. Meanwhile, the Backstreet Boys (BSB) come from the next generation of boy band which has also achieved a fair bit of tween super stardom. Both bands have been kicking back for some time but have finally come back and have made a major breakthrough by joining both groups together. They are now called NKOTBSB. These two different generation boy bands will perform at Jakarta on June 1 at MEIS, Ancol.

From The Beat Daily Go to www.beatmag.com for more daily news. Charity Runner Reaches Jakarta Scott Thompson finally arrived at the finish line after running over 1250 miles from Bali to Senayan Driving Range in Jakarta last week. The 25 day run was in order to campaign and raise funds for education for school children, as well as to help children with cancer. “Thank you to Mary’s Cancer Kiddies (MCK) and the National Foundation for Children (YCAB) who became my reason to keep running,” stated Scott. “Hopefully the money raised will be useful to help with medical expenses for children with cancer in Indonesia,” added the 44 year old Scotsman. Through his campaign called “Keep Running”, Scott managed to collect donations totaling Rp3.8 billion from individual and corporate sponsors, with one organization donating Rp. 1 million per kilometer run. “That is more than we expected,” he added with a satisfied smile. Scott’s run clearly touched the hearts of people all along the route, with one couple riding a motorcycle a distance of 100 km from Situbondo to Makati just to greet Scott after seeing him on TV. Chairwoman for YCAB, Veronica Colondam expressed her deepest gratitude, saying that; “I am thrilled to see him appear in Jakarta. Through him, exercise proved to be a means to help others,” said Veronica.

Locals were shocked and amazed by the discovery of 25 bags of cash in an empty field in Denpasar last week. The cash consisted of 20, 50 and 100 thousand rupiah bills which had been cut and bagged and left lying in a vacant plot of land. After alerting police the money was traced back to Bank Indonesia (BI) who claimed that the money was no longer in circulation and was meant to be destroyed, which is their usual policy. The land-owners are entrepreneurs in the waste disposal business, and decided to use this money as land fill. “Usually we don’t destroy the money because it is not feasible,” said Young Senior BI cashier Denpasar, Widaryadi. “The waste money was to be disposed of as landfill, actually in Suwung, on Sunday night, but because my employees had gone home, the bags were put here as land fill,” said Wayan Suarta, owner of the land. Reports estimate the money has been there for four days, however BI officials say this is not against procedure providing that landlords bury the money immediately if using it as landfill. The value of destroyed money each year is estimated to be in the billions of rupiah. Widaryadi added that people interested in using old bills for other purposes, such as souvenirs or as craft material go into a BI branch and ask.

Matt Nukewood sky garden | friday 20 april

Roots:

Matt is one of Australia’s semi-newcomers, but is by no means new to finding serious success in all the places his music has touched down. Young, but now well established, Nukewood has house music roots planted all across the land downunder, and in the last five years has built a solid fan base, stretching into Asia, and even onto the epic dance floors of Ibiza.

Sounds: House.

Where You Might Have Heard Him:

Matt does more than perform inspiring solo DJ sets. He is also one half of “Night Dimension”, performing alongside Implex. Their remix of “Crazy Motherf--kers” made the Aussie top 20, complimenting another one of their remixes “Love Is Crazy” which saw itself in the Aria Top 10 chart. Top clubs such a Soho, Chinese Laundry, and Ivy have hosted Matt’s moving sound, as have big festivals such as Future Music Fest, Creamfields, Global Gathering, and many more.

www.beatmag.com

Why See Him:

He’s held down a stage with the likes of Deep Dish’s Sharam, Laidback Luke, Skrillex, Deadmau5, Fedde Le Grand, David Guetta, and even The Chemical Brothers. His impressive #8 rank of Australian DJs doesn’t come without merit, and his performance here in Bali surely won’t come without solid energy and a high level of that passion for great music which his peers so often speak of.

nic fanciulli mint | thursday 26 april

Roots:

Roots? Very deep. Fanciulli is now a household name heard all over the globe, whether it be as a DJ or a producer. His story starts as that of the normal UK punter who falls in love with the music and decides to be a DJ, but what has taken place in his career since those days, lines up more with a seriously big time international DJ having some major influence on the global scene.

Sounds:

Tech house, house, techno.

Where You Might Have Heard Him:

With any lengthy passion for great tech house and techno, no doubt you’ve already heard him. His productions are plastered all over top DJ compilations and radio shows. His live sets span the globe and he holds residencies at top clubs on multiple continents. Aside from his own productions and remixes, he has his own successful label “Saved Records” which has its own solid base of great producers who all carry a well defined sound.

www.beatmag.com

Why See Him:

This is one of the bigger guys in the global dance music scene, but one whose name might fly under the radar a bit if you aren’t passionate about techno and tech house. But regardless of how into the fibers of such you’re woven, if you like great music and want to be a part of an amazing night and vibe you won’t forget, be there to watch him play and see for yourself. It’s a treat to have talent like this come to Bali.

cassian woo bar | friday 27 april

Roots:

Born Cassian Stewart-Kasimba, Cassian comes from the Aussie dance mecca of Sydney, and has a blossoming career today that wasn’t difficult to spot. 2011 saw a world tour which had 13 sold out dates across the USA, shows across Europe and Asia, and appearances at massive festivals all across his native Australia.

Sounds:

House with the occasional smatterings of “geetars, peeeano, seeeeenths and vibreeeeephone”.

Where You Might Have Heard Him:

www.beatmag.com

If you’re from Sydney or plugged into the house music scene around Australia, good chance you may already know the Cassian name. He’s supported big names like Calvin Harris, Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Afrojack, and countless more. His single, “I Like What You’re Doing” has been premiered on BBC Radio 1 on it “Picks of 2011” show. Cassian also has an exclusive residency in Melbourne’s Super Disco and is featured in the Bang Gang 12 inch compilation.

Why See Him:

Not only is Cassian in high demand these days with sold out shows across the United States, when reading of what’s been written of his style and his performances, one thing seems very consistent - High energy and a desire to take over dance floors. Sounds like it’s sure to be a partyyy!

grandmaster flash poco loco | fRIDAY 27 AprIL Roots:

Born Joseph Saddler, King Grandmaster Flash’s roots are the stuff of which legends are made. He is of Caribbean descent and grew up in the Bronx in New York where he went to vocational school where he studied electrical engineering. He soon became a DJ innovating many techniques in the 70s including the backspin technique, punch phrasing and perfecting scratching.

Sounds:

He can be considered a founding father of hip hop.

Where You Might Have Heard Him:

www.beatmag.com

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five ring any bells? The group hit mainstream success in 1980 with their “Freedom” which reached #19 on the RnB charts and went on to sell 50,000 copies. In 1981, he released “The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel” which was the first time scratching and turnableism was recorded. That following year, the group released “The Message” which peaked at #62 on the pop chart and cemented hip hop as something credible in mainstream music. He has received a bunch of awards including a DJ Vanguard Award from Bill Gates in 2004, RIAA’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, VH1 Hip Hop Honors in 2005, and BET’s “I Am Hip-Hop Icon” Award in 2006. He has also written an autobiography in 2007, The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash: My Life, My Beats.

Why See Him:

Grandmaster Flash is a legend and if you’ve ever listened to hip hop in your life, you honestly have him to thank for it. He’s playing at Poco Loco on Jalan Padma Utara, we highly suggest you check this out. This is the hip hop DJ who started it all… from scratch.

dj sirdee hu’u | Saturday 28 april

Roots:

Born in Vietnam, Australian DJ Sirdee hails from Sydney’s West. It was there in 2006 where his desire to play in front of masses of people was born. He started by experimenting with hip hop and RnB classics on traditional vinyl turntables. He was soon addicted to the music and a couple weeks later was mentored and equipped for the world of the dance. He has played at a number of Sydney’s hip hop clubs where he has refined his deck skills.

Sounds:

RnB, hip hop, house, mash ups, and electro.

Where You Might Have Heard Him:

If you’ve ever been to Sydney and frequented their hip hop clubs, there’s a good chance you’ve run into Sirdee at one time or another. He is known by many event organizers and promoters as “Sir DJ” and is regarded as one of the best late 90s and early 2000s hip hop and RnB DJs the area has to offer.

www.beatmag.com

Why See Him:

Sirdee’s style is going through an evolution of sorts, he’s adding electro and house to his mixes which will most likely produce some interesting sets. If you’re into the danceability of hip hop combined with the fast tempo of house and electro, this just might be the ticket for you.

ord that Geisha was performing at Akasaka motivated the people of Denpasar to turn up at the event in droves. Geisha sang all their hits which is exactly what the crowd wanted. They knew them all and sang along to them all. The band was pumped by this very enthusiastic crowd which in turn pumped up the crowd and thus a self sustaining energy was formed until both band and crowd could take no more.

Essential Ibiza

E

ssential Ibiza hit the shores of Karma Beach last weekend along with quite a large swell. There wasn’t a huge crowd attending but the relaxed atmosphere of the beach with the sound of the waves and the giggling laughter tucked among the blowing breeze kept those there quite happy. The laid-back and casual feel made it an enjoyable event, which featured Iain Thomson, Paul Guy, Poornima and Nick Field.

olombians (among other things) are known for being hot and DJ Claudia was no exception to that rule. And it seemed like Kutabex was red hot that night. With the comfortable atmosphere, the unique 3D dance floor installation, and some catchy tunes, it was a fun night. It was a mellow crowd, but everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves in a very civilized manner. Models from CnC got up and did their thing for the opening act before DJ Claudia get onto the decks. DJ Claudia looked so gorgeous in her little black number and the music she played was as sexy to match.

Spirit FestKeeps the Good Vibes Flowing

f e a t u r e

083

The Bali Spirit Festival can be roughly divided into two sections; the day portion spans over five days and offers workshops for yoga, healing, dance to name a few and is at a completely different venue. The night time events were last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights and featured artists from around the globe with music as diverse as the world we live in. So after a day reinvigorating yourself with yoga and healing lessons, people generally head on over to the music part of the festival where they’re treated to a show which reflects just about everything in the Spirit Fest ethos. Indeed, the music was great, just about every type of music was included, hip hop, rock,

eclectic mash ups, traditional ethnic dances, African reggae, traditional Chinese, you name it, it was probably there. It seemed almost entirely impossible to be in a bad mood; even the grumpiest of grouches would find it difficult to be negative. Why, I don’t quite know, maybe it’s the fact that everyone is so darn happy to be there. Perhaps there’s something metaphysical going on, an invisible energy that you genuinely feel when so many around you are feeling that positivity. Another explanation could be that we have evolved from social and tribal beings and that part of us that just wants to feel what everyone else feels and a kind of bond develops based on physical cues. Whatever it is, you can certainly feel it and that’s what makes Spirit Fest something you do not want to miss out on. According to the organizers, this year’s Spirit Fest may not have cost them any money for the first time after running the show for five consecutive years. It may have even turned a profit. Needless to say, they were feeling the love too.

www.beatmag.com

W

hen going to a music event, a few things are absolutely necessary to make it an absolutely worthwhile time. The first thing being good music, the second thing is an appropriate venue, and the third thing needed (and this is absolutely necessary) is a crowd full of enthusiastic people genuinely stoked to be part of the music. That’s what makes Bali Spirit Festival’s concerts stand out and that’s why it is an amazing experience. Last weekend’s Spirit Fest at the Arma was no exception.

Ah, well, fun is how it all starts and how it should end, right? What are we here for but to be happy and create and enjoy good times with others? So it's both fun and business. It can be a challenge to establish and maintain the highest standards and professionalism but make sure everyone has a joyous time—but this is my life right now, and it is possible. I remember you used to run F Lounge back in the day. I think it had a great concept and excellent music selection. But it didn't work out. What happened? Some super places and ideas have their time and place. Even the famed Double Six had its wonderful run, right? It was the first underground music lounge/concept that wasn't a superclub, but still had big-name DJs drawing epic nights, and also cozy weeknight community parties creating Bali's underground sound happenings… These spawned alternative musical movements such as Disko Africa, kick starting the soul movement here. I still endeavour to bring this community atmosphere into my current events, no matter how large or international—it's what keeps it fun, familiar, neighborly, but still an out-of-this-world, galactic experience! Do you plan to run or own your own club, payback time? Ah, no, been there done that three times here over the last 16 years in Bali—it was great then, fantastic experiences, but I'd rather develop and expand international standard and level events that draw positive tourism to this beautiful island. Concerts, festivals, and other

How do you see the entertainment industry here in Bali? No more Double Six, no more rave parties. Don't you miss those days where thousands of people were having fun dancing? It's keeping up with global trends—the idea of the hyperclub has gone away, although that's spawned a number of more intimate, nichetype venues that cater to different tastes, and I think these can incorporate lovely Balinese aspects and, when managed responsibly, also have a softer impact on the infrastructure and environment, even promoting 'green' practices and choices, for example. And the large, outdoor rave atmosphere is still captured in events such as The Junction Festival, which employs several venues over several days for an all-weekend, seemingly never-ending cascade of groovy beats and good times.

annual events that highlight Bali as a friendly, high-level, top international destination for partygoers and those interested in community and culture alike.

When it comes to clubs and parties, what makes Bali different compared to, let's say, Jakarta? Jakarta follows cutting-edge global trends and keeps a sharp eye out for sophisticated fashion and branding, which is a major aspect of the club scene there. Bali similarly has its thumb on international beats, but loves a good moonlit beach bash in batik as much as evening jazz cocktails at a top bar. It's continuing to establish itself as an international destination for top acts and events. Now let's get personal, what's your 3 all-time favorite albums and why? Dennis Ferrer, The World As I See It: amazing poetic lyrics, vocals that soothe you or put you in the mood—whatever you want that mood to be! And Sting's first major solo album after the Police, The Dream of the Blue Turtles: "If You Love Someone, Set Them Free"—wow, enough said! Then Mary J. Blige, What's the 411: memories of my fading youth while I was in graduate school in Sydney, but growing into who I am professionally. Also three all-time favorite movies and why? The Fifth Element—space opera extravaganza with a social message AND the ultimate power of love! This is what I want my life to be about! The Year of Living Dangerously—a reminder of Indonesia's dark days and what we want to emerge better from. Airplane—can't stop laughing, no matter how many times I watch it. Any last nagging words? Life's too short... live and give large and beautiful.

www.beatmag.com

How did you get involved in the entertainment industry? Well, I always did love theatre—got involved in every [Jakarta International School] play I could! One summer in high school I attended the prestigious Boston University Theatre Institute, which was excellent preparation for both public presentation and organizing large-scale productions. But all those experiences laid the foundation for what I have been and currently do in this industry. I think my first big event in Bali was an event at Nyang Nyang, Uluwatu, called "Spectrum", where 3000 people danced the dawn in to righteous beats! The Yak was actually born from a late night, perhaps vino-fuelled night, with Michelle Lamb-Tjahjono and Sophie Digby, where it was decided from the get-go that between us we could produce a Bali-based, Baliinfused international lifestyle mag. Perhaps we were slightly tipsy, but we were right!

Drive past the tall grass screen at the front and you’d never know that just the other side is an oasis of tranquility, complete with a beautiful wooden Joglo pavilion. Large wooden benches strewn with cushions surround even larger wooden tables, with an array of traditional carvings and knick knacks dotted about. There’s plenty of greenery too, giving a calming air to the place that’s part restaurant part garden terrace. Go casual on the benches or alternatively grab a normal table inside close to the bar. Brilliantly, the attention to detail and quality feel of the place also extends to the menu, with, as the name suggests, plenty of home cooked style

For a healthy start you won’t go far wrong with a tall glass of healing juice (25k++), or if you’re after something a bit sweeter then try the straw banana (25k++), which is a bit like breakfast in a glass. Standout starter has to be the fantastic pepper crust tuna salad (35k++) – chunky sashimi style seared tuna with a lively pepper coating that is perfectly complimented by a medley of watercress, baby ruccola, tomato and red radish. For the particularly hungry, the enormous rack of grilled pork or lamb ribs (65k++) should do the trick. n a closely contested 30 minute final at Canggu’s famed rivermouth right hander, Mustofa Jeksen nabbed his second Oakley Pro win last week, narrowly defeating Made Awan in challenging 4-6 foot thumping surf to come home with 3,000 Coca-Cola ISC championship points and the winners check of Rp 15 million. Both competitors were previous Oakley Pro winners, Jeksen having won the inaugural event back in 2009, and Awan in 2010. Last year it was current Coca-Cola ISC champion Marlon Gerber who was the winner. Neither Jeksen or Awan had banner years in 2011, both just barely inside the top 16 in the rankings, so it was obvious they were hungry and committed to getting this year off to a good start. Mustofa jumped into the lead and never looked back, catching 10 waves during the final while Awan took only half that many with five. Due to the size of the waves, actually too big for perfect Canggu, the wave scores weren’t that high, with Mus’s best wave a 7.0 and Awan’s a 5.75. Frequent bombing 6ft+ sets had the boys paddling a lot, with only the medium and smaller waves offering up much scoring potential. As the 10-second countdown reached the five second mark, a nice medium set wave appeared and Awan paddled furiously toward it, but just as he turned and was paddling down the face the horn blew the end of the final. It was the wave he had needed, but just seconds too late. The final score showed Mustofa ahead by just under a single point, 11.50 points to Awan’s

10.75, with Awan needing a 5.85 score to take the win. It was a hard fought battle with both surfers giving it their best, and on all accounts a fair and worthy matchup. “This win means a lot to me,” said Jeksen back on the beach. “Last year was a tough one as I didn’t get many good results and I got dropped by my long time sponsor, but I knew I had to just focus and think about the future, not about the past. So now I’m back, Mustofa Jeksen is back, I’m a winner again, thanks to my family, my friends and my sponsors that support me. I really want to be Indonesian champion this year, that’s what my goal is now, so my season is getting a great start with this win.” Awan was stoked with his second place finish, but also knowing that he had been just a few seconds away from the top podium spot and the winners check. “I was trying to be really patient out there and catch only waves that I thought I could score on,” he said. “But it was hard to choose the good ones with the big closeouts washing through, but I did my best and oh my God, if only that wave would have come a little sooner! I never surfed man-on-man against Mus before, so I was happy to be in the final with him. But ya, this is a great start of the year for me and so I’m looking forward to better year this year for sure.” Awan is without a major sponsor this year, after his previous sponsor shut down their operations in Indonesia. Lending a whole new meaning to the childhood mantra, “step on a crack break your mother’s back,” the state of Bali’s sidewalks leaves gaping holes in town planning.

S

tay a while in Bali and you’ll surely know someone who has fallen through one of the treacherous holes in the footpath, some of them reaching into the nether regions of the island, a place no sane person would go. We hear so much whinging about the traffic but very little about the hazards of being a pedestrian on our fair island. Walking is a task that needs to be approached with extreme caution. Besides the motorbikes that wind mindlessly down the sidewalks, window shopping becomes the sport of kings along the by-ways and highways. The new mantra for all is do not take your eyes off the path, obstacles include phone junction boxes that jut out at head level, which means in fact you need more eyes than we’re born with.

www.beatmag.com

The drainage holes that some genius decided to cover with concrete blocks that move, crumble and disappear completely are without a doubt the single most scary thing. Well known film maker and documentarian extraordinaire, Lorne Blair, fell into one of these holes on a dark night and was taken to Sanglah hospital only to later die from suspected related complications. Rainy season is the worst time as the water rises and the sidewalk disappears. During the rainy season, as garbage infested water rushes through the drains, it is possible to fall in and never be seen again.

The other night a friend was walking from his restaurant to his car, the rain had flooded the street and next he knows he is waste deep in filth, fallen straight through the non-existent sidewalk. He is still washing in peroxide in the hopes of one day feeling better. The stories are endless and yet, we still walk around. I have instructed my children well in the vagaries of never stepping on the hole covers as they are liable to collapse. However the other day I myself fell victim, after all these years. A slight movement in the concrete slab caught my flip flop and before I had a chance to react, found myself eating the dirt. Luckily numerous drinks may have been my saviour. The other day in full daylight and stone cold sober, I negotiated around one of these huge holes and considered warning my friend who was following. I decided she couldn’t possibly miss it, she didn’t. We arrived at our destination in search of first aid, ice and sedation. I’m still not sure who was more shocked, she or I. The scars up and down her legs are considered “getting off easy”. At least nothing broken and her tetanus shots were up to date. Taking a walk may seem a fairly innocuous plan, but don’t be fooled. Be aware at all times, do not take your eyes off your feet, except to check occasionally for head height obstacles and make sure you have some betadine in hand just in case. [Sarah Dee]

Must-Watch: Women in These Movies! Anybody who still thinks that women aren’t worth the leading role in blockbuster movies By: @JohanJT

should open their eyes to these wonderful women, both the characters they play and the actresses who play them in these movies. They may well be true biographies, fictional stories and fairy tales, but these chicks are worth that cinema ticket and bucket of popcorn.

My Week with Marilyn Biography, Drama. Director: Simon Curtis. Writer: Adrian Hodges. Cast: Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Emma Watson, Julia Ormond, Judi Dench.

Based on Colin Clark’s real diary when he met and fell in love with Marilyn Monroe during the shooting of the all-time classic “The Prince and the Showgirl” with Sir Laurence Olivier, this film is something every Marilyn fan will cherish and young audiences will enjoy its genuine romance. Another charmer in this film is Michelle Williams’ Oscar nominated performance as Marilyn Monroe with her legendary charm and seduction. Classic wardrobe and it’s charming to meet Marilyn!

The Lady

Biography, Drama. Director: Luc Besson. Writer: Rebecca Frayn. Cast: Michelle Yeoh, David Thewlis, Jonathan Raggett, Jonathan Woodhouse, William Hope.

World renowned for her involvement in Burma’s democracy movement and her peaceful quest against a hostile regime for more than a decade, Aung San Suu Kyi is, after all still, a woman and wife at heart. This is exactly the main angle focused on by Rebecca Frayn when spending three years writing this film. She finally released it as an epic story by director Luc Besson on Suu Kyi and her husband, Michael Aris. With Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis paired together, you can bet we will be intrigued by the political plot but touched more by the true love story.

Mirror Mirror Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy. Director: Tarsem Singh. Writers: Melissa Wallack, Jason Keller. Cast: Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane, Jordan Prentice.

After The Cell, The Fall and Immortals, director Tarsem Singh is again about to put you in awe at the beauty of every single frame in his new flick, “Mirror Mirror”. This time it’s a bit different, the movie is adapted from a classic fairy tale “Snow White” made for adults in a darker yet more humorous rendition. Don’t expect a happily-ever-after love story, this one is more fun, packed with adventure and full of laughs!

[REC]3 Genesis

Horror, Thriller. Writer & Director: Paco Plaza. Cast: Leticia Dolera, Javier Botet, Diego Martin.

As one of the most successful action-horror franchise films with its genuine first-person handheld camera style, this third edition will serve as a prequel and decoder to reveal information hidden in the first two films (Rec and Rec 2). Still with a woman as its main protagonist, Carla (Leticia Dolera) in this prequel will take you on a dead-or-alive escape full of horror and gore. Bring a big bucket of popcorn just in case you need to hide behind it!

sonik kicks

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

Neatly sidestepping the descent into wobbly middle-aged and middle of the road dreariness a la Peter Gabriel and David Gilmore, Paul Weller has sensibly kept his modish suits sharp and his music even sharper of late. Clearly underneath that spiky hedgehog haircut lies an overactive brain that is showing no sign of slowing down despite his 54 years. With the enthusiasm of a puppy on crack, Weller eschews the vintage tinted nostalgia of 1995’s Stanley Road and the dad-rock of follow up Heavy Soul on Sonik Kicks to hectically delve into a range of genres–often times just momentarily–firing out ideas and weird interludes like a catherine wheel gone haywire. Psychedelic punk pop and cosmic guitars are liberally splashed across the album, but the real surprise is the gorgeous and quite unexpected dub bliss out of “Study in Blue”, which the album is more or less built around. A duet with fifth (yes fifth) wife Hannah, the song mutates halfway through into psychedelic dub reggae. Simply put, it’s just great, the sort of ganja-hinged preposterousness you’d never expect from Weller. Far from coherent, a few too many electro blips, bleeps and high-pitched white noise hint that someone got a little too carried away on the mixing desk. You can imagine Weller sneaking into the control room between tracks and fiddling with the buttons before being swatted away by the sound engineer and told to stay put in the studio. Opening track “Green” suddenly fades out for a few seconds around the 1.40 mark like someone has spilt coffee over the cross fader, and by the end of the ‘experimental’ 2.01 minutes of “Sleep of the Serene”, the acoustic slide into “By The Waters” is a sublime relief. Furthermore, the 20 seconds of interlude “Twilight” could have easily been left on the cutting room floor altogether IMHO. So is Sonik Kicks actually any good? Well, yes and no. Your dad will love it and think it’s groundbreaking. Meanwhile younger listeners will wonder why some old crusty is trying to do dub. Obviously Weller doesn’t care either way, and is content to do whatever the hell he pleases for now. Good on him. Dan Ashcroft

Bambang Wibawarta

O

ne amazing Indonesian artist, Bambang Wibawarta, who’s also a noted scholar and dean of the faculty of humanity at the University of Indonesia, is not your everyday artist. He has his own artistic characteristics that have spontaneously outgrown his education which combines the mystical heritage of his place of birth, Java, and Japan where he studied for years. He came to the realization that visual communication was a perfect non-verbal extension of his mind that merges intellect with intuition. He seeks a three-way dialogue between his inner self through his art.

www.beatmag.com

He has become particularly fascinated with celestial orbs during the last few years, especially the sun that he’s referred to as a “magic circle”. In his latest exhibition entitled “Astral Projections”, Bambang juxtaposes celestial orbs with human bodies. The latter are often only outlines of nude figures that seem to be dreaming. The exhibition will be held at Ganesha Gallery, Four Season Jimbaran, Bali. www.fourseason.com

Ingredients:

As you walk through the door of the spa, you’ll notice the decor is one of modern elegance combined with the elements of traditional Bali. At the entrance you are greeted by two beautiful therapists who lead you through a candle lit carpeted passageway to your private room.

One of the specialities of the spa is the chocolate body scrub. The 120 minute treatment starts with a massage using 100% natural ingredients. After the massage you are treated with a body scrub of natural cocoa, loaded with antioxidants, making it a wonderful ingredient for your skin. A fragrant scrub of natural coconut is also featured. Regular massages are available with a variety of oils.

Warm brown and terracotta tones of wood and ceramic features create the sense of a traditional Balinese spa. The massage mattresses are at floor level on a raised platform. You start feeling comfortable once you don the pretty floral satin kimonos.

www.beatmag.com

Feel: There is a feeling of quiet serenity as you sit on a comfortable lounge for your rose petal foot bath prior to your treatment. The spacious room is comfortable but simply furnished. The bathroom with a sunken bath, modern shower and toilet are hidden behind a sliding glass door.

Magic: A feeling of lightness and serenity prevails while therapists provide strong and soothing hands to completely relax your body. The treatments provide a balance between traditional Bali methods with modern techniques and a range of wonderful ingredients.

‘Ojek’ ‘bajaj’ and the busway Transportation options in Jakarta are many and varied so take your pick

If you have one, are you still using your car as much as you used to?

www.beatmag.com

By the time you read this the chances are the government will have raised the price of fuel to try and keep a lid on the ballooning cost of the fuel subsidy due to recent rises in the price of crude oil on the world market amongst other things. Fuel in Indonesia is still among the cheapest in Southeast Asia but given the price sensitivity that seems to exist here, many will be thinking about leaving their car at home more often. Fear not, for there are many options available for journeys within the city, some of which you may never have seriously considered before. I’ve tried all of them and it’s very much a case of

horses for courses, depending on the length of your journey and the time of day you wish to travel. Two options are not on the list – helicopters and trains. Choppers are hideously expensive, and if you could afford to take one you’re unlikely to be affected by the higher cost of fuel. Trains are theoretically a good option for those who live on the routes they serve but the network is rather limited at present. An improved/new suburban rail/tram network might eventually prove to be the answer to much of Jakarta’s traffic congestion but for the moment trains are often not a feasible option and suffer from an image problem, perceived by many as suitable primarily for those in the lower tiers of the economic heap.

ojek

busway

So here are the other options, warts and all:

Shanks’s pony (walking)

Pros: For short journeys, completely reliable, often faster and a chance to observe the detail of everyday Jakarta life you’d miss if whisked past it in a motorised vehicle. Remember to walk at half your normal pace or you’ll overheat. Cons: You may get lost in the labyrinthine alleys of the capital if taking a shortcut but at least there’ll be many locals to keep you on the straight and narrow. You may fall down a hole in the road with no sign to warn you, and the filthy air of the metropolis will leave you with a sweaty, dirty face.

Busway

Pros: Where it has its own dedicated lane, the busway can be really fast. On Sudirman/Thamrin, route 1 can often be the quickest way from A to B. It’s also cheap and a chance to observe ‘real’ Jakartans on the go. Cons: When busy, there’s a high chance of getting pickpocketed so be careful where you put your valuables. The bus stops can get really stuffy, too, and the pushing and shoving when a bus arrives at peak times will test your patience to the limit.

‘Bajaj’ (motorised rickshaw)

Pros: These narrow, three-wheeled contraptions are ideal for short trips via the back doubles (jalan tikus) that are too small for most vehicles. The newer blue ones offer a smoother, more spacious ride and are faster. The older orange ones are being phased out so enjoy them while you can. Bajaj drivers are very knowledgeable about the areas in which they operate and can be a mine of information (and gossip!). Cons: Suspension on the older bajaj is primitive so be prepared for a bone-jarring ride. They are banned from many main roads in the city centre so drivers often have to take a circuitous route to get from one place to another.

‘Ojek’ (motorcycle taxi)

Pros: There has been an explosion in the number of ojek drivers plying their trade since credit to purchase motorbikes became much easier to obtain about 10 years ago. This works in your favour as it’s very much a buyer’s market when it comes to haggling over the fare. Ojeks offer great flexibility and can be the fastest way of getting around the city at peak times. Cons: Once aboard, you’re at the mercy of the driver, who may not be the safest thing on two wheels. The bike itself may be as dodgy as the driver so be choosy before you commit yourself. Sometimes an ojek can be more expensive than a taxi but may be worth it if your’e in a hurry and there’s gridlock all around ...

Taxi

Pros: Taxis provide a 24/7 service and (provided you choose a vehicle from a reputable firm) offer a comfortable and safe means of getting around. You can even read or send text messages from the comfort of the back seat. Cons: At the very first drop of rain Jakarta taxis seem to disappear from the face of the earth. Where they go to is still a mystery. You’re also at the mercy of the driver, who may be annoyingly chatty when you don’t wish to talk, or uncomfortably sullen when you wish to shoot the breeze a bit. If you’re a non-smoker, check before you commit yourself that the previous passenger has not been puffing away in the back seat. Whichever transportation option you choose, remember to haggle over the price at the start of the journey to avoid an argument later. Once a price is agreed the driver will stick to it. If it’s a taxi, make sure the driver uses the meter. Selamat jalan! (Jim Read)

Media Entrepreneur, Film Maker While still busy doing the post-production of his upcoming movie, Erwin has already started working on a new book called “Rabbit versus Goliath” for a foreign publisher. Outside of his busy schedule, he spends his quality time with the ones he really loves: his wife and his dog.

Superman Is Dead since I used their songs for my movie soundtrack, and Chubby Checker.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? Some Girls by the Rolling Stones and The

Grateful Dead by the Grateful Dead. I hosted a radio show called “Stones Hour” back in 1977 and always took my chance to tell the listeners about the saga of a legend named Brian Jones. Meanwhile Jerry Garcia mesmerized me in The Grateful Dead album.

What is your all-time favorite album? Why? Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The songs in this album seem to be destined as a requiem, as well as a symbol of pure love.

What was the worst record you ever purchased? MC Hammer, I guess!

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Jean Pierre Basquiat or Hugh Hefner hahaha...

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Borrow or buy?

“The Dharma Bums” by Jack Kerouac. PS: I never borrow books from anyone, and I never lend any books to anyone, too!

What new movie should people see? Why? Well, my new movie, of course: Rumah di Seribu Ombak (A house of a thousand waves). Playing

at the cinema in August this year. I present the other side of Bali, rather than just a “bling” Bali like we usually see in commercials or magazines. This is something else, something different, but actually real, and sadly, based-on-a-true-story kind of thing. This movie is an adaptation of my novel with the same title, which I wrote when I was still in prison.

What song do you choose to start your weekend? “Sunday, Lovely Sunday” by Edson.

And album you choose to end your weekend? The Chrystal Method, especially their Vegas album.
