What’s happening to all the tourists? With all the hype and blah blah in regard to massive tourist numbers in Bali, the record breaking months of foreign tourist arrivals and the mushrooming hotels, both cheap and luxury, for some strange reason Seminyak is a sleepy and quiet town after 11pm most weeknights. From Sunday to Wednesday it’s like a ghost town after the dining hours and one has to wonder where all the tourists are. Sure it’s low-season now but this is the situation most of the year. The tourists are here somewhere; you can see them through the day. It could be that people have become more sensible and health conscious, or it could be that there aren’t the venues available. Maybe they are all down in Kuta, but they are still struggling with the early closing rules themselves down that way (though not as severe as before). Sure, there are a few spots like Rumours and Red Carpet getting a few bods inside, or the bars down on Dhyana Pura, but there’s generally not much going on. All of the major players like Ku De Ta, Potato Head or Woo Bar are winding down by midnight. I suppose you could say people have to work and need to sleep early, but well, all the tourists are on holidays so how does that figure? The local banjar definitely has something to do with it as bars in Petitenget aren’t allowed to open late mid-week, but maybe the fact is that the restaurant/dining culture has totally taken over the nightlife for the majority of people on this island. Now that Bali has become the Eat, Pray, Love capital of the world and the average age of tourists is rising possibly (I will have to check that), maybe the oldies have taken over the place. Now it’s cups of tea and discussions on the best spa treatment or psychic in town. God forbid. Or maybe it’s the younger generation starting already old and with so much social media in their heads they don’t even know how to have a good time to begin with. Who can say? The Seminyak party people are still out there somewhere. We’ll keep looking for them and be back with more results soon.

New Year’S IDOL The world certainly isn’t going to end this year because on December 31, American Idol 2009 runner-up, Adam Lambert will bring his powerful operatic voice to the island. Lambert, fresh from his sold out 2012 UK and European tour with Queen, will perform for the first time in Indonesia in what should be a memorable New Year’s Eve celebration at The Grand Ballroom in the new Mulia Bali in Nusa Dua. Let’s welcome a whole new year of opportunities, and possibly more doomsday predictions, with the glam rock superstar with hits like “For Your Entertainment”, “Whataya Want from Me”, and “If I Had You”.

Bali will host the Rock Climbing National Championships where rock climbers from across the nation will compete in Karangasem. The tournament is scheduled for November 8 to 14 and will have approximately 250 participants. Chairman of the Bali Sports Committee Made Nariana said that his committee and the local climbing club had built climbing walls to standard specifications at a grass field. The Juan Maclean sos super club | wednesday 14 nov
Roots
The man behind The Juan Maclean is no other than John Maclean, who came out of Providence, Rhode Island where he grew up listening to punk and played guitar and synthesizer in a post punk band called Six Finger Satellite in the early 90’s. After the demise of Satellite, Maclean moved to electronic music with the help of his friend James Murphy, a former sound engineer for The Satellite. At that point, Murphy had co-founded the influential dance punk label DFA Records, and the dance punk band LCD Soundsystem. Several of Maclean’s early compositions were included by DFA Club in its compilation albums.
Sound
Electronica, dance punk
www.beatmag.com
Where you might have heard him
Maclean’s first full length album using the moniker The Juan Maclean, Less Than Human was released by DFA in 2005, in which he collaborated with James Murphy, Nancy Whang and the late, Jerry Fuchs. It was followed by a 2006 American tour for The DFA Remixes Chapter 2. Recognition for Maclean’s talent finally arrived when his singles “Happy House” and “Simple Life”, hit the streets in 2008. The year 2009 proved to be an important year as Maclean dropped his second album, and what is considered the strongest album from DFA, The Future Will Come in April. He also went on tour with Australia’s Cut Copy and Shocking Pinks that year before releasing another hit single in “One Day”. Maclean pushed on with the release DJ Kicks Mix CD in 2010 and Everybody Get Close in 2011 while keeping a tight DJing schedule at every corner of the world.
Why see him
Maclean has been an important figure in the famed DFA label since the very beginning and if you’re into LCD Soundsystem (which has broken up) you’ll want to check this show. Rumour has it that Nancy Whang will also appear making this the close to a LCD Soundsystem show.

Adrian Wee woo bar | saturday 17 nov
Roots
Adrian Wee is a Singaporean DJ and party organizer with musical interest ranging from house to grunge. He’s been active in the Singaporean club scene for at least a decade with his first post as resident DJ at NOX in 2001.
Sound
House, indie, electronic, pop, rock
www.beatmag.com
Where you might have heard of him
In his first year as a resident, DJ Wee, who is widely known under his stage name Weelikeme, won the Best Upcoming DJ award in the Party Animal Awards. Wee’s fortune changed overnight and he began doing a lot more gigs at clubs and parties all over Singapore, one of them was the NYE 2002 in Sentosa where he shared the bill with the likes of John Digweed, Technasia, Charles Siegling, Kosheen and Christian Smith in front of 10,000 punters. That same year he took up a residency at The Liquid Room where he put his wild and energetic DJing skills to good use that subsequently resulted in The Best Local DJ award from a local magazine. Perhaps the achievement that he is most known for to date was the Poptart party which he initiated in 2004. It was the first event that combined alternative rock and electro in the local dance scene. Poptart became so successful that it was awarded as the Best Local Club Night in a magazine as well as The Best of 2005.
Why see him
Adrian Wee is currently doing a residency at Velvet Underground and has established himself as “the one who cranks up the dancefloor”. You know that you can’t go wrong with a DJ like that.

mind electric sky garden | saturday 17 nov
Roots
Perth based Kristian Jackson AKA Mind Electric was DJing at clubs in Hamburg and Stockholm when John Course and Andy Van of Australia’s Vicious Recordings discovered him in 2006. He then ended his three-year European stint and returned to Australia to sign for Vicious which almost immediately proved to be the right career move.
Sounds
House, dance, electronica
Where you might have heard him
www.beatmag.com
After joining Vicious, it didn’t take long for Mind Electric to shine. He immediately made quite a buzz around the dance scene with his first single “Dirty Cash” in 2006 before taking it up a notch with hits like “Electrify” (2007), “Infinity Sweat” (2008), and “Rock Da House” (2009). In 2010 his cover “3am Eternal” got approval by the original artist, The KLF. Not one to sit on his laurels Mind Electric continued working and out came the single “Combat” in 2011 which became one of Beatport’s 10 Must Hear Club Hits. He has recently returned from a huge USA and Canada tour supporting mega star Kaskade. His remixes are played by big names like David Guetta, Laidback Luke, and Thomas Gold before tens of thousands. His talent and reputation also put him on the line-up of festivals like the One Love Anthem, Stereosonic Festival and club gigs all over the world.
Why see him
Besides his production prowess Mind Electric is certainly an electrifying talent when it comes to rocking dance floors as proved by his current residencies at prominent clubs including The Rouge (Moulin) in Sydney and Limelite in Perth. Seeing him live would be a chance any punter would not want to miss.

Ollie Des eikon | tuesday 20 nov
Roots
Ollie Des hails from Singapore where he began his career more than 10 years ago out of a love for hip hop. Over the years he has developed his turntable skills, scratching techniques, beat juggling and mixing old school tunes with hip hop, RnB, funk, disco, dancehall, and reggae to name a few. In 2002 he snatched the title “Bounce in a local DJ mixing competition. He went on to compete in numerous other DJing challenges around the region and came out on top on several occasions.
Sounds
Hip hop, electro hop, electro, house, dub
Where you might have heard him
www.beatmag.com
Equipped with an impressive ability and talent behind the turntables, DJ Ollie Des has traveled to Southeast Asian countries and down to Australia to move people on dance floors with his fresh thumping hip hop beats. He has opened for Singapore and Malaysian hip hop superstars like Urban Exchange, Triple Noize, Sleeq, Too Phat, Ruffedge, and the Tarik Crew. With so much success on stages and clubs around the region it comes as no surprise that he eventually opened for Lil Jon during his show in Singapore, yeeeeyah! Ollie Des has built some credentials in hip hop and dance in the region. He currently holds a residency at one of the first and most revered clubs in Singapore, the Double O.
Why see him
Ollie Des has grown into a respected figure in the Southeast Asia hip hop scene. Although he is no stranger to the Bali club circuit, another visit by the man would most likely win him new fans for his time tested skill of ripping the dance floor and his funked up, hip hop beats.

Nita Aartsen jazz cafe | tuesday 20 nov
Roots
Nita Aartsen’s love affair with music began very early in her life. Born in Jakarta, Nita was basically bred to tap at the ivories and began six years of classical piano training from the age of five. At the age of 13 she went to the Moscow Conservatory to learn contemporary jazz. Three years later she returned to Indonesia and became the state pianist.
Sound
Jazz, latin, classical
Where you might have heard of her
www.beatmag.com
As the state pianist for 15 years, Aartsen has played for world leaders including Bill Clinton, the Sultan of Brunei, and Prince Bernard of Holland. At the same time Aartsen was pursuing numerous commercial projects as a performer, producer, composer and arranger with noted names in the Indonesian music scene such as Indra Lesmana, Gilang Ramadhan, Erwin Gutawa, KLA Project, and God Bless to name a few. Then came a period when she refined her skills in Holland; working and performing with local musicians. When she came back to Indonesia two years later, Aartsen continuously performed on the airwaves to spread her love for classical and jazz music to a larger audience. She plays on regular basis at festivals like JakJazz and Java Jazz among others, and has performed with the likes of Michael Paulo, Rolland van Stratten, Greg Lyons, and Paul Smith. In 2009 Aartsen finally released her debut album, All Nite Out with the Nita Aartsen Quatro.
Why see her
Nita Aartsen is the kind of artist who eats and breathes music. She has been considered a rising star of the Indonesian jazz music scene. With someone who basically breathes and bleeds piano notes it’ll probably be a memorable experience long after the last note fades away.

The Challenge Christina Iskandar Here, there and everywhere the word is out, Christina has pledged to the challenge. Day by day, pound by pound the eyes of the island are upon her and her quest for Bali kids.
S.B Go for it. C.I. My name is Christina Iskandar, I’m from Sydney, Australia. I’ve been coming to Bali since 1983, my husband is from Jakarta and I have three children and am based in Bali now.
are polio, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, mental conditions, thalidomide and blindness. They have to have physical therapy; its partially government funded. It’s a lot different from the West, so there’s a need for a lot of fund raising.
S.B. Lets get some of your background. C.I. I had my own store in Sydney, Darlinghurst, I was in the fashion industry and I also did a lot of creative directing as well, fashion shoots, then I became a mom full time. Before I came back to Bali, I worked for a concept store called Cambodia House, that was a non profit store, all the profits went to Cambodia helping disabled kids, that was my last job.
S.B. How many kids are there at YPAC? C.I. There are 53 children, 22 live on campus.
www.beatmag.com
S.B. So you have been involved with charity organizations before Bali? C.I. Yes, but now I have just been focusing on what I can do for underprivileged kids here for the past five years. I wanted to help the kids and the passion came from my uncle. He was a philanthropist and he helped disabled children with the Disabled Children of Cuba Foundation and they did a documentary on him on S.B.S. Television in Australia. It was quite big and he donated a lot of money and that sort of hit me like a light bulb. He has passed on now, so I’m carrying on where he left off. S.B. Let’s explain what YPAC is. C.I. It’s a Yayasan Pembinaan Anak Cacat, which is for disabled children in Jimbaran; there are two care takers that look after the entire place. S.B. What is the age bracket? C.I. Mostly teenagers and the illnesses they have
S.B. So they need more volunteers and help? C.I Yes, we’re trying to raise funds for more Indonesian therapists. They don’t have transportation, which is why I decided to put forth this challenge that I’m taking on, which is a 12-week weight-loss challenge. I was asked to do this challenge through the Canngu Club and Motion Fitness and they put me on a program to try and lose 15 kilos. If I complete the challenge, all the pledges that come through, one hundred percent, will be put towards buying a bus for the kids. S.B. Interesting. The emotional blackmail they put on you. C.I. I know, it was like, what was I thinking, but hey, it’s a win-win situation. S.B. Ha, really, no way can you back out of this one now. C.I That’s it, the eyes are all upon me. I remember when I said I would do it, I sort of pushed the button of faith. S.B. Who actually approached you? C.I. Whiteball Media initially. They then set up a meeting with the Canngu Club who sponsored me with free gym usage and Motion Fitness provided
S.B. Are you freaking out? C.I. No, I’m totally okay with it, bring it on, I feel amazing. S.B. What was your weight beforehand? C.I. I’m not disclosing that information, my aim was to lose 15 kilos and possibly even more. I’m happy with what I have achieved till now, almost back to the size of when I was a kid. S.B. I understand that you have just climbed Mount Agung. C.I. My hero is my father and he was the inspiration for me to climb Bali’s highest mountain. I didn’t think I could do it and it was one of the biggest challenges to get up that mountain in eight hours. We left at one in the morning and got to the top at sunrise, no sleep. I was delirious, and very, very tired but just soldiered on. I had to get to the top because my father, who passed away two years ago. I did it in honor of him and his memory, and I think he would have been very proud of me. S.B. I am, and who wouldn’t be. C.I. I made a poster and I had a picture of him in loving memory of my dad, Angelo. He was a beautiful soul, and I put it on the mountain top. Some people were turning around and heading back. They couldn’t do it. S.B. Christina, you’re going to make me cry, okay back to biz, what’s in the future? C.I. Different challenges, different things, pushing myself, I’m ticking the bucket list, moving forward and whatever I can achieve. I’m proud of myself because of my age and my kids and I’m a grandmother as well. I’m doing things I wouldn’t have done as a teenager... like climbing mountains.

Strangers as well, people I’ve never met that have heard of the Iskandar Challenge pledging money towards it, and my biggest thrill will be driving that van to the orphanage, honking the horn, telling the kids, “here’s the keys”. S.B. Let me throw my two cents in. Why not go to the source, put it in their face, this is what’s happening, a terrific promotion, tax write off for them, etc. C.I. Yes, yes, sponsorship would be awesome, stickers could go on the van, yeah come on Daihatsu Indonesia or Honda Indonesia, please get on board!

Would the real
KETUT
please stand up.
W
hile Eat, Pray, Love inspired a league of women of a certain age to travel to Bali in search of their soul mate, a television commercial playing in Australia has sent scores of women to the island searching for Ketut. Who is Ketut? The car insurance commercial has captured the imaginations of Australian women as it tells the tale of Rhonda who falls in love with Ketut on a Bali holiday. In a car journey with a friend she flashes back to romantic episodes with Ketut as he serenades her throughout her holiday. The finale sees her whispering the intimate details of the relationship, so saucy apparently, that her friend crashes the car.
www.beatmag.com
It isn’t often that a commercial captures a nation in quite the way this one has. As a result, Australian women can now be seen touring the island, in search of Ketut. For those who know Bali, this is nothing short of hilarious, as Ketut is one of the most common Balinese names. Stand in a busy part of town and call out “Ketut” and you are likely to attract a large crowd of them. The streets of Kuta are now littered with t-shirts referring to the Ketut and Rhonda scenario and it isn’t only young women who have caught the bug. Older women can also be seen asking at their hotel receptions whether Ketut is employed there. Bars, clubs, rice fields and temples are experiencing a surge of women searching for their ideal Balinese boy.
The media have played their part in adding fuel to the fire as any mention of Ketut, and there are a lot of them, has them in a frenzy trying to sign up bellboys and waiters, sarong sellers and the like to exclusive interview contracts. Ignorant of the fact that thousands of them exist. Sources close to The Beat have revealed that the real Ketut, featured in the commercials, is in fact a Melbourne resident who plays drums in a band. Rhonda is an actor. This minor detail has not stopped the hordes of enthusiastic Ketut seekers, and perhaps it doesn’t really matter who the real Ketut is, maybe any tanned chiseled man with the right smile will do. Romance between an Aussie traveller and a young Balinese man is not new, the story has been going on for decades. The AAMI car insurance ad has simply breathed new life into the fantasy cross cultural romance and may in fact do more for tourism in Bali than Eat, Pray Love ever did. So waste no time ladies, your Ketut is out there; the die-hard romantic with coffee coloured skin and soulful brown eyes, who is willing to lay down in the sand for you, stick frangipani blossoms behind your ears and whisper endearing messages of love. In fact there are thousands of Ketuts to choose from, in Bali you are spoiled for choice. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a Rhonda, go for it. [Sarah Dee]

BALINALE Another great success for movie goers and industry
T
he sixth annual Balinale International Film Festival saw filmmakers from around the globe descend on the island on October 22-28.
The festival opened with the world premiere of Salman Aristo’s Jakarta Hati presented by the director and attended by actors Slamet Rahardjo, Roy Marten, Dwi Sasono , Agni Pratistha, Shahnaz Haque, Framly Nainggolan, and long-time Festival Friends Didi Petet and Jajang C. Noer and producer Lavesh Samtani.

Officially closing with Lovely Man by director Teddy Soeriaatmadja, the festival’s foundation also presented its free annual children’s film program through the weekend. The program is a mix of local and international films along with film industry forums and conducts a half a dozen free workshops for filmmakers throughout the year. Regional and domestic advisors and speakers include Oscar, Emmy, BAFTA and Cannes award winning filmmakers who have generously contributed to the program over the years.
Two seminars on scriptwriting were part of Balinale and conducted by Gabrielle Kelly, screenwriter, producer and Associate Professor of Film at Tisch Asia, Singapore. A film industry forum supported by Motion Picture Association International (MPA-I) discussed the contribution of the local film industry to the Indonesian economy, government initiatives to support its film industry, increasing collaboration between Asia and the world, and local industry filmmakers’ current concerns. Sitting on the panels were Euis Saedah, Ministry of Industry’s director general of small and medium industries, Leo Shi Young, screenwriter and executive producer of The Flowers of War by Zhang Yimou, Edward B. Neubronner, vice president and regional operations officer, Asia-Pacific, for the MPA-I, Donna Smith, former studio executive and Cinema Completions International officer. Also participating and presenting films during the festival, Manoj Padamu and Carl Valiquet director of Bagus Bagus.

Best Documentary went to director James Bradley’s Ochre and Ink, a half-hour portrait of Chinese-born Australian artist Zhou Xiaoping and his close working relationship with indigenous Australian artists. Balinale was the first time Zhou held an exhibition of his work alongside the film’s screening. In accepting the Best Short Film award on behalf of Luminaris by Juan Pablo Zaramella of Argentina, Brazilian Ambassador to Indonesia Paulo Alberto Soares announced that for Balinale 2013, his embassy will host a carnival of Brazilian filmmakers with a focus on the country’s younger generation of creative artists. The festival’s biggest sponsors this year were the W Bali Retreat & Spa, Audi cars, Garuda Indonesia, Max3 by Biznet and Cinema XXI plus the US Embassy, Jakarta.
The Indonesian government endorsed the festival program for its proven efforts in delivering cultural, political and economic benefits, but the festival received no direct funding from the government. However, through the Ministry of Industry, a number of Citilink airline tickets were provided for local filmmakers to attend the event. The festival was started with the aim to attract international filmmakers who would consider Indonesia as a setting for their films, for the locations, the story ideas or the talent. Eat Pray Love was the first significant feature to use locations in Bali and Rob Cohen’s Alex Cross, which had its world premiere two days before the opening of this year’s Balinale and 12 hours before it was released in the US, also did some filming in Bali last year. Other films that have been part or wholly filmed in Indonesia are the IMAX and Warner Bros films’ Under The Sea 3D and Born To Be Wild in 2009 and 2010, and Oliver Stone’s 2012 Savages, which used the country for scenes set in Indonesia and Africa. Recognized in the international arena and on the film festival calendar, Balinale is destined to grow at a steady pace and increase in audience numbers and film industry participants.
www.beatmag.com
The Audience Choice Award was presented during the closing night party at the W Retreat & Spa and went to Lovely Man, directed by Teddy Soeriaatmadja, which was also voted Best Feature and Most Popular Overall Film. The story is about a devout Muslim girl who leaves her village to travel to Jakarta to find her estranged father, only to learn that he is a transvestite prostitute. Earlier this year Donny Damara was honored as best actor at the Asian Film Awards for his lead performance in the film and was at the closing to present the film and accept the award.

Spies, the supernatural and a video game villain
By: @JohanJT
We label people most of the time, just admit it. This also applies when seeing characters in the films we watch. You’ll see the spy who never fails his mission, an entity which haunts a household, or an animated villain who finds redemption. Check out www.21cineplex.com for times (including the new theater at Beachwalk) or your local DVD store.
Skyfall Action, Adventure, Thriller. Director: Sam Mendes. Writers: Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, John Logan. Cast: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris. “My name is Bond.” Who isn’t familiar with that line and doesn’t know which Bond it refers to? He just might even be the most famous film icon with 23 films produced, longest film franchise ever. In this third reboot, James Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past is revealed. While an international incident is unfolding, MI6 is under attack and its active undercover agents getting leaked onto internet, Bond must seek Silva, a dangerous villain claiming to have a secret connection with both Bond and M. Be prepared to be blown away by Bond’s action, stunts, gadgets, and charms…
Paranormal Activity 4 Horror. Directors: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman. Writers: Christopher Landon, Chad Feehan. Cast: Katie Featherston, Kathryn Newton, Sprague Grayden, Matt Shively, Brady Allen. During the first movie, this gullible writer was in shock wondering if it was real footage. When the second one came out, they couldn’t fool me twice, but it still managed to make me wee my pants with their twists. Last year, the third one at least got me with some new camera angles that creeped me out. This sequel is still much anticipated by many fans of this horror franchise as it will continue what the last three films led to and will feature the protagonist from the original. Will there be sequel after this one too? Probably. Will I lose sleep wondering if its for real this time? You betcha.

A video game villain gets sick of playing the same part in an arcade machine for 30 years and escapes into other video games helping out their characters along the way. Adventures and shenanigans ensue and because this is a Disney film, you pretty much know what you’ll be getting.

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
O
nce again throwing their musical hat into the ring is Cocoon Beach Club, with a new title: Volume 2: Metamorphosis. I welcome another helping of chilled out, clubby Bali ambience to my CD collection. Two helpings for the price of one in fact, with the collection of well-selected grooves divided into two mixes. At the helm are Cocoon resident DJs Helmy and Andre Batz for the first nu disco act, and Bulgarian born, Miami-based DJ Stan Kolev for the progressive house second, all of whom keep the tempo nicely varied, making for a steady flow that alternates between dreamy chillout to atmospheric house. However, I find myself returning to a point I made some time ago regarding music created by people with laptops, large sunglasses and a haircut. It’s all brilliant, obviously, but there is really a very specific time and place for listening to chill stuff; namely a leisurely drive in the car, when surrounded by nature in all its beauty, or around the Cocoon pool between the hours of 4-9pm, preferably with their excellent cocktails in hand. Each track merges into the last as seamlessly as siang becomes sore, meaning that while tracks like “Lovebirds ft. Novika” by This Time and Crazy P’s remix of “Miguel Migs” by Tonight are highlights in their own right, it’s almost impossible to pinpoint exactly where one ends and the other begins. Exactly what was intended I imagine for an album meant to put you in a certain feel good mood. So if you are not around the Cocoon pool but wish you were, stick this on and you’re halfway there. Indonesia’s2012SurfingChampions Crowned
T
he Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championships, Indonesia’s only professional surfing organization, celebrated its ninth year by crowning Indonesia’s top surfers on Friday, November 2 at the posh W Retreat & Spa in Seminyak with a gala dinner and awards presentation. The awards presentation was then followed by a raging after party at the nearby Mantra Restaurant & Bar that lasted well into the wee hours. Highlighting the evening and earning his first ever Indonesian Surfing Championship Open title was 23-year-old Raditya Rondi from Bali, who accepted his trophy and a check for Rp 100 million (over $10,000 USD) for his stellar performance in 2012. Rondi is one of Indonesia’s best up-and-coming young talents, growing up in Kuta in an extended family boasting some of Bali’s best surfers including Wayan Gantiyasa, Garut Widiarta, and Made “Bol” Adi Putra. Last year Rondi narrowly missed out on the number one spot taken by fellow Kuta resident Marlon Gerber, so this year’s victory was extra sweet for the young man.

The Ballroom at the W started filling up with surfers, leaders and management from the surfing industry, government officials, media and event sponsor representatives at about 7.30pm, all joining in to celebrate another epic year and to congratulate the 2012 champions, while enjoying a delectable four-course dinner with drinks from Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and Ketel One. Everybody enjoyed dinner, drinks, and the camaraderie with friends as a slide show with photos taken during the 2012 season clicked along on the big screen, and then MC Tai Graham got up and announced it was time for the night’s formalities to begin. He then took the audience through a recap of the primary events. A special Sean Gilhooley produced video followed that gave an up close and personal look at the
surfers and the events that made the 2012 so great, which had had everybody cheering and clapping. CC ISC President Director Tipi Jabrik was next to take to the podium. He first thanked Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and specifically Business Director Bruce Waterfield. He next thanked all the event sponsors Rip Curl, Quiksilver, Oakley, O’Neill and Billabong, then followed by thanking Mr. Dadang from West Java, Mrs. Desti from the Mentawais, and Mr Zulkifli from West Sumbawa, whose support is an example of how the government is getting more involved in surfing. Jabrik also took a moment to reflect on the recent passing of two surfing greats, first Andy Irons who died two years ago, and local legend Dave Wylie. Receiving first time CC-ISC Championships were Gazali Hamzah in the Pro Junior (Under 21 years of age) Division and Raju Sena in the Junior (Under 16) Division, while Ketut Juliarta received his second Masters title and Arip “Mencos” Nurhidayat his second Longboard Division title. Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea has been the long-reigning Women’s Division Champion, receiving her 5th consecutive title this year. Inspired by the feedback and the will to create an “original production” guitar, Kongko started to create his own guitar designs and specifications, and from that process made the first line of original production guitars, which then he branded as G&B Guitars. www.gnbguitars.com G&B Guitars Representative: Rozzi Adityawarman 08129963736 rozziaditya@yahoo.com $1500 - $1600

Three Dimensions Fourteen artists grouped in Galang Kangin are showcasing an exhibition that concerns itself with the social condition on the island. The three-dimensional installations displayed at Griya Santrian Gallery examine current social issues in Bali, such as the increasing sale of agricultural land, the conversion of those lands to other uses, and the concern of the artists on Bali’s present condition. Taking the theme “Three Dimensions”, the artists try to break down two dimensional art as well as to explore the imaginary spaces. The artists of Galang Kangin group wish that their efforts will persuade the local population and religious leaders of the urgent need to address Bali’s social and environmental problems. The exhibition will run through to December 10.

nusual concepts in art usually create unique masterpieces. Made “Romi” Sukadana implements these concepts in his paintings. Made “Romi” Sukadana was born in Denpasar, January 22 1973, and paints images of Balinese icons, like the barong, rangda, dancers, and shadow puppet characters on cardboard side by side with product images and anything already printed on the cardboard medium. Through his art, he depicts those visual phenomenon presented together in eclectic compositions. Romi has realized that there are so many unique and exciting things hiding within the cardboard. In his latest exhibition called “Hidden Connection” held at Ayucious Restaurant & Gallery, Romi does not only have the image of the product on the surface of a piece of cardboard, but also relates the condition of the product being packaged inside.

Besides presenting a visual feast, this artwork can also be a medium for which it is able to expose the consciousness and investigate the values and meanings sometimes hidden from the naked eye. The exhibition is on-going until January 20.

Located on the fifth floor of the surf-themed Bliss Wayan Hotel, Waves Senses Spa has created a mini haven of seainspired therapies. Decked out in pale wood, colours of the sea and decorated with sea shells and sail cloth, Waves Senses has set out to create a niche spa in keeping with the funky budget hotel in Legian that opened just five months ago.
Feel:
Almost all the therapies are inspired by the sea, from salt scrubs to hot shell massages offered in addition to the traditional spa therapies. With titles like Sun and Surf, Ocean Bliss and the Endless Wave, the appeal of the spa is in the clean and fresh details. Two double massage rooms cater for singles or doubles. Each features a Jacuzzi separated from the massage area with sea shell curtains. Large windows overlook the mini resort which is decorated with surfboards and water features.

Both imported and local products feature on the menu and the use of hot sea shells, instead of the more common stones, is a funky detail that exemplifies the thoughtful theme of the intimate spa. Reflexology is a specialty here as well and two chaise lounges are located off the reception, which are lightly scented, cool and softly lit to inspire relaxation.
Magic:
Although this is an intimate spa centre, the decoration, the ingredients, the menu and the themed rooms are delightful. The small team of spa therapists are professionally trained and best of all, the treatments are priced to appeal to their younger guests on a budget. Friendly, clean and inspired by the sounds, smells and elements of the sea, it is delightfully different and a breath of fresh air in this new and delightfully friendly hotel.
