Letter from the editor

D

ecember has arrived! Yes, I am one of those crazy for Christmas Music, lights, and eggnog people. I LOVE it! I spend many days decorating both the inside and outside of my home with lights, snowman, garlands, and more. I get made fun of, especially by my husband, who shakes his head at me each year as I beg him for more extension cords to power my insane addiction for more lights. Let's just say I could easily be related to the Griswold's, and yes, you can see my house from outer space. Ha! Not only do I love the season of magical transformations, and how the whole state can change under a blanket of snow in one night to a Winter Wonderland, but, I love the spirit of giving and love. Showing your neighbors, friends, family, and even strangers, that you care. That we are connected by goodness. Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Ramadan, or none of the above, we share a common bond: love. We can all take joy in the spirit of the season and be reminded to express our love and appreciation to others. My gratitude and love for my incredible Beauty Battalion Team cannot be expressed by words. Maybe if I had a good voice I could sing my praises for them, but alas, I do not. So, I just have to continue stating that they are, indeed, the best of the best. From their generous souls to their big hearts. They make me a better person, and remind me that together, we can make magic. I feel we have created many magic moments together this year for some very deserving individuals, and I'm excited to continue making these special moments for more True Beauty Award Winners in 2018! Tips for taking care of your Winter Wardrobe Courtesy of (StatePoint)

It’s time to find that box marked “winter” at the back of your closet and rediscover all of your favorite layered looks. But, it’s important that you know how to treat your winter wardrobe so each piece stays comfy, stylish and warm throughout the season.

Fashion and lifestyle blogger Sarah Gleeson of SG Style Me is quick to share a few things to keep an eye out for when deciding what to get rid of, including items you got for free or very cheap.

Get Organized It may be tempting to unpack items as needed. However, you may find it’s suddenly spring again and some of your favorite scarves and sweaters went the whole winter unworn at the bottom of the box.

Just because it was a good deal, doesn’t mean it’s a good fashion piece, she stresses. Say goodbye to the trends you once collected and have since moved past. We’ve all been through style phases, and it’s ok to see them end. Pull out anything with tags still attached. This is a definite sign that purchasing that item was a moment of retail weakness, and not a fashion must-have, says Gleeson.

Commit to a full closet revamp, devoting time to unpacking and analyzing each item. After months of being folded, many pieces might not look, feel or smell their best. Refresh these items so they are ready to wear. You can now do this at home instead of at the dry cleaner, by tossing up to five items in the dryer for just 15-30 minutes using the Dryel AtHome Dry Cleaning kit. This new method will save you time during your closet swap, and money throughout the season, as you can use it to preserve your favorite pieces without expensive and inconvenient trips to the dry cleaner. To Keep or Not to Keep Is it time to get rid of those pieces that never seem to make it off the hanger?

If you find yourself heartbroken having to part ways with a fashion favorite because of a stubborn stain, don’t lose hope. Secret weapons exist to keep star pieces looking brand new season after season, such as the Dryel stain remover pen, which is safe on delicate fabrics and effectively removes spots and stains -- even those from last season. Know Your Fabrics After your closet is organized, stay on top of wardrobe care. Among cashmeres, wools, velvets, and more, high-maintenance fabrics are likely more prominent in your winter wardrobe than other seasons. Read tags for what can and can’t be washed normally. To safely and easily care for delicate items, keep an athome dry cleaning kit on-hand, to clean clothes in the convenience of your dryer for a fraction of the cost of a professional dry cleaner, without stretching fading or shrinking. Keep sweaters, jeans and scarves bright, fitted and functional. That way, when it’s time to pack up the box again, you can look forward to feeling just as great in your favorite pieces next year.

TRUE BEAUTY AWARD WINNERS DECEMBER 2017

ACHIEVING SUCCESS There’s a slang term in rodeo used when someone is determined to overcome an obstacle, and that phrase is Cowboy Up. For Renae Cowley and Jenna Smeenk the expression rings true in their lives as professional barrel racers. It also epitomizes how each of the accomplished women approach life with resiliency and support of each other as friends and competitors in the arena.

Renae Cowley

ONE BARREL AT A TIME

By Jennifer Weaver

BECOMING RODEO QUEENS

Cowley and Smeenk are passionate about racing around barrels while on horseback in a cloverleaf pattern in record speed, and possess just as much ambition and drive when it comes to their families and other personal endeavors. Their aspirations toward success didn’t come without hard work and perseverance. They never gave up on their dreams and neither did their support systems. 22 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

“I have an incredibly supportive family. There is no way I could rodeo without their support, my mom especially,” Cowley said. “She has been by my side through every horse competition growing up. She is my driver, sports psychologist, support crew, and about a million other things in between. “We didn't have a lot of money growing up, but she worked three jobs so we could keep our beat-up pickup truck and old trailer filled with discount horses going down the road.

True Beauty Award

She taught me that money can't buy success,” she continued. “It takes endless hours of practice and hard work. I have applied these principles not only to rodeo competitions but to my professional career as well.

Cowley grew up in West Point, Utah, and is a late-bloomer to barrel racing but not the rodeo. A self-professed city girl, Cowley got her first horse at the age of nine and competed in 4-H and the National Reining Horse Association for years. She achieved a childhood dream of becoming Miss Rodeo Utah in 2008, and placed in the top five at Miss Rodeo America that same year. “I am honored to be counted among an elite, impressive group of women who have held that title (of Miss Rodeo Utah),” Cowley said. “I don't know that I have ever worked harder for anything else in my life, but it taught me how to work hard; it taught me that I am capable of doing hard things, and it taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to do.”

Cowley earned an undergraduate degree in communications from Utah State University and a master’s degree in business administration from Texas A&M-Commerce. “My nine-to-five job is a lobbyist, but I am a weekend warrior professional rodeo cowgirl,” Cowley said. “After completing my MBA I really missed competition and decided to try my hand at barrel racing, having zero experience.”

Following her reign as Miss Rodeo Utah,

“I don't know that I have ever worked harder for anything else in my life, but it taught me how to work hard; it taught me that I am capable of doing hard things, and it taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to do.” THEBBMAG.COM THEBBMAG.COM 23 23

Though Smeenk is more experienced in the barrel racing world, being a third-year competitor, she is honored to compete in the quick turning, high speed, edge-of-your-seat excitement with Cowley. But unlike Cowley, Smeenk says she’s all country girl from growing up on a 10,000-acre buffalo ranch in a small town in South Dakota. “My entire family grew up ranching and, of course, have a love for the western way of life and rodeo,” Smeenk said, who bought her horse Taz (Fultastic) she races off of a racetrack.

She trains Taz herself and other horses as an established trainer with emphasis on the Bureau of Land Management Mustang Adoption Programs, as well as colt starting and barrel racing. She is also a former Miss Rodeo title holder, business owner and entrepreneur focusing on her tack company, “Knotty Halters.” She offers online coaching program and eCourses, and even dabbles in real estate investing and property management. While you wouldn’t think Smeenk had much time for anything else in her life, she finds the time to do public speaking, and is even writing a book that she plans to launch early next year with a tour coupled with speaking engagements, clinics, and – you guessed it - rodeos. “I try to document where I am on my journey so that others may learn and relate, and hopefully turn decades into days from the lessons I've learned,” Smeenk said.

24 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

SOCIAL MEDIA SAVVY Cowley and Smeenk are the first to tell you that the most important factor that goes into barrel racing is their bond with their horses. But a close second, is the connection to the public via social media to share their expertise and connect to rodeo fans. Both women possess a strong digital presence that has established relationships that have helped them in their barrel racing pursuits.

“Social media, YouTube videos, eCoaching and eCourses are the best way I have found to touch people all across the country from exactly where I am,” said Smeenk. “Social media is a powerful tool when used in the right way. It can spread knowledge and passion.” Cowley agreed by adding, “Social media has provided me with an outlet to share this journey and the lessons learned along the way. It is my most sincere desire that those following me can see themselves in this adventure. “Whether or not they want to be a barrel racer or tackle some other dream they feel might be outside of their reach, I hope my story gives other women the confidence and empowerment to pursue their passions and stretch themselves outside of their comfort zones to do something great,” she added.

The personal stories of “Insta-lovers” and “Snap-fam'ers,” as Cowley put it, has inspired her to continue to take risks. She said people aren’t that different and she relates to them for “taking big, heroic leaps to start a business, take on a new endeavor, or train for a competition they have always wanted to do.” “It is insanely motivating because I feel like I am part of this tribe that believes in themselves enough that regardless of age, education, experience, or financial means that they can do anything,” Cowley said about people who post on social media. “I am deeply touched if I am able to play even a small role in inspiring these incredible people who are doing amazing things.”

Smeenk credits freedom of speech afford in America that enables her to have a voice online. The nine-year U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan said she wouldn’t trade her military experience that has given her a perspective of pride she wouldn’t have otherwise. Cowley praised Smeenk for her service to the country and expressed her own gratitude.

it affords us. I feel extremely passionately about this,” Cowley said. “Nowhere else in the world can you dream as big as we can dream and have every opportunity to work hard and bring those dreams to fruition. “Nothing is handed to us, nor should it be, but if we apply ourselves and think creatively the word ‘impossible’ becomes obsolete,” she added. “I basically woke up one day and said I wanted to be a barrel racer. That is such a crazy “I cherish the country we live in and the freedoms idea that could only happen in our great country.” ROLE MODELS & WORDS TO THE WISE And the success both women have achieved thus far in their lives they attribute to role models. Cowley emphasized her thankfulness to her mother for her sacrifices, while Smeenk gave accolades to a nationally acclaimed author, philanthropist and life coach. “My biggest role model is none other than Tony Robbin,” Smeenk said. “He is the kindest human I have ever met and strives to constantly add the most value and impact to more lives than anyone else I know.” While Robbins inspires Smeenk, she was quick to credit her family for her dreams coming to fruition as Miss Rodeo America in 2013. Her tiara still has special meaning to her, but not as much value as her family who helped her win the coveted title. “I cherish my family. They have been there for me through everything - even when no one else believed in me,” Smeenk said. “They've always had my back and I know I can count on 26 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

them no matter what the situation or the circumstance. I think we are all striving for love and human connection in this life, and I had the best foundation and start growing up in the Smeenk household. It made me who I am today and they are constantly pushing me to be the best me that I can be.” Being your personal best is something Cowley and Smeenk admonish other young women and girls to strive for in achieving their own dreams. They both advocate to set goals and to stick to them no matter what naysayers or challenges present in their journeys. “I believe in growing the pie and that helping others succeed does not take away from my ability to succeed, in fact the opposite, it adds to it,” Cowley said. “Bullying, hateful speech, and putting others down to lift ourselves up does not bring happiness. When we build a

community around us of empowerment, encouragement, and helping others reach their dreams it cultivates a beautiful environment where nothing is impossible.” Smeenk couldn’t agree with Cowley more: “You better hustle! Don't let anyone outwork you. Nothing worth having comes easy. Enjoy the moment, enjoy the journey. Find fulfillment in the now and realize that you don't need anything to choose happiness, you have it all, already. Constant growth and never-ending improvement is what you should strive for!”

Q & A with

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF Renae Cowley from West Point, Utah. I earned my undergraduate degree from Utah State University and my MBA from Texas A&M-Commerce. My 9-5 job is a lobbyist but I am a weekend warrior professional rodeo cowgirl. I have competed on horses since I was 9 yrs. old from 4H to reining shows. I was honored to be crowned Miss Rodeo Utah 2008. After completing my MBA I really missed competition and decided to try my hand at barrel racing. Having zero experience in this arena it was a fun, new challenge and I have had a blast learning, competing, meeting new friends and making memories along the way.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY I have an incredibly supportive family. There is no way I could rodeo without their support, my mom especially. She has been by my side through every horse competition growing up. She is my driver, sports psychologist, support crew, and about a million other things in between. We didn't have a lot of money growing up but she worked 3 jobs so we could keep our beat up pickup truck and old trailer filled with discount horses going down the road. She taught me that money can't buy success. It takes endless hours of practice and hard work. I have applied these principles not only to rodeo competitions but to my professional career as well. HOW DOES RODEO HELP YOU CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR COMMUNITY? Pursuing my rodeo passion has given me a platform to demonstrate some principles I hold near and dear to my heart - I call it my success formula. Basically with the right mindset, dedication, and seeking knowledge, anything is attainable. Social media has provided me with an outlet to share this journey and the lessons learned along the way. It is my most sincere desire that those following me can see themselves in this adventure. Whether or not they want to be a barrel racer or tackle some other dream they feel might be outside of their reach, I hope my story gives other women the confidence and empowerment to pursue their passions and stretch themselves outside of their comfort zone to do something great. WHO DO YOU ADMIRE IN LIFE AND WHY? The personal stories of Insta-lovers and Snap-fam'ers taking risks to pursue their passions. There are tons of everyday people just like me taking big, heroic leaps to

start a business, take on a new endeavor, or train for a competition they have always wanted to do. It is insanely motivating because I feel like I am a part of this tribe that believes in themselves enough that regardless of age, education, experience, or financial means that they can do anything. I am deeply touched if I am able to play even a small role in inspiring these incredible people who are doing amazing things. WHAT ONE THING DO YOU CHERISH IN LIFE? I cherish the country we live in and the freedoms it affords us. I feel extremely passionately about this. Nowhere else in the world can you dream as big as we can dream and have every opportunity to work hard and bring those dreams to fruition. Nothing is handed to us, nor should it be but if we apply ourselves and think creatively the word "impossible" becomes obsolete. I basically woke up one day and said I wanted to be a barrel racer. That is such a crazy idea that could only happen in our great country.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST PROUD ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? Honestly, it was winning Miss Rodeo Utah. It was a goal I had set for myself since I was 9 and when it finally became a reality I felt like I had conquered the world. I am honored to be counted among an elite, impressive group of women who have held that title. I don't know that I have ever worked harder for anything else in my life but it taught me how to work hard, it taught me that I am capable of doing hard things, and it taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to do. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE UPCOMING GENERATION? That happiness and success are not finite resources, there is plenty to go around. I beleive in growing the pie and that helping others succeed does not take away from my ability to succeed, in fact the opposite, it adds to it. Bullying, hateful speech, and putting others down to lift ourselves up does not bring happiness. When we build a community around us of empowerment, encouragement, and helping others reach their dreams it cultivate a beautiful environment where nothing is impossible.

Celebrate With the Perfect Drinks this Holiday 32 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

How to Celebrate with Sparkling Wine this Holiday Season With the holidays here, it is time to celebrate, and sparkling wines go hand-inhand with special occasions. If you are looking for something new to serve this year, consider swapping your usual bubbles for Cava, a delicious and walletfriendly Spanish sparkling wine that is made using the same traditional methods as Champagne. One Cava producer offering top-quality sparkling wines is Poema. Their wines are made from sustainably farmed grapes, and are available at affordable prices. Their Poema Cava Brut (SRP: $12.99) is a fine choice for your cocktail hour. Its fresh citrus and granny smith apple aromas and toasty notes are a good match with light tapas, oysters and seafood. It also makes for delicious sparkling cocktails, such as the Belle of the Ball. Ingredients: • 4-ounces Poema Cava Brut • 1/2-ounce Belle de Brillet Pear Liqueur • A splash of orange liqueur Directions: Chill Cava and Pear Liqueur beforehand. Then, pour both ingredients into a flute. Top off with a splash of orange liqueur. For those who like things a little bit sweeter, there is Poema’s Cava Extra Dry (SRP: $12.99). Served as an aperitif or paired with passed appetizers and starters, its crisp aromas of green apples, limestone, and spring flowers offer a trace of sweetness that is well balanced by a crisp finish. Whether you are having a formal celebration or an impromptu casual party, be sure to celebrate the right way this holiday season -- with sparkling wines that won’t disappoint your guests.

MAKE A LASTING DIFFERENCE W Photo courtesy of Getty Images

FAMILY FEATURES

hether you’re considering ways to give to deserving causes or looking for the perfect gift for a loved one for a special occasion, remember that not every gift is a tangible item. In fact, some of the best gifts are those you can’t touch at all, but those that make the world a better place. Socially motivated gifts, of your own accord or on behalf of someone else, are much more than a one-time present. They have the potential to make a significant impact on lives or to further the work of a cause-based organization. Consider these giving options to make a lasting impact:

Retirement plans: Because retirement plans are taxed differently than most assets, they may actually become a tax liability. Naming a nonprofit organization as a beneficiary of your retirement account can be an attractive option for leaving a legacy and reducing income, and possibly estate taxes, for loved ones. A tax-exempt organization may be eligible to receive the full amount, bypassing income taxes. This means, for example, that a $100,000 IRA can be worth the full $100,000. Life insurance plans: A gift of life insurance is an affordable way to make a significant gift while also enjoying tax savings during your lifetime. Benefits include the ability to give a significant gift at a fraction of the value; tax savings that can be immediately realized; a reduction in the final taxes of your estate and the ability to pass gifts outside of your estate. Gifts of real estate: You may decide that the greatest gift you can make is to leave your home or other property to a charitable organization. This kind of gift is ideal for someone who intends to continue living in his or her home or property through their lifetime, but still make a charitable gift. You can leave this generous gift by signing an agreement with an organization about maintaining the property so you can use it throughout your lifetime. You may even receive a tax deduction for your gift. Gifts of stock: Stocks, bonds and mutual funds that have ap preciated in value are among the best ways to gift a nonprofit organization. You may receive a charitable income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock (up to a maximum of 30 percent of your adjusted gross income) and avoid paying the capital gains tax on any increase in the value of the stock. Gifts of cash: This type of gift is simple and eligible for an immediate charitable tax credit. Although many organizations allow you to specify how you would like the funds to be used, an unrestricted monetary donation allows the organization to allocate your contribution into the project or area that needs funds most. If you designate a gift on someone’s behalf, be sure to share a card or a note with the honoree letting them know about the contribution. Particularly if it’s a cause close to the heart, it’s sure to be just as gratefully received, if not more so, as any trinket you might buy. 4 Ways to Make an Impact on Children

W

hen looking for opportunities to make an impact on the lives of others, selecting a cause to support can be an overwhelming task with so many options to choose from. However, considering opportunities that can change the lives of kids is one way to make a lasting impact for generations to come. Helping children early on can change the trajectory of their lives, set them up for success and empower them to achieve their dreams. This is especially important for kids living in poverty who are not guaranteed access to things like medical care and quality educations. According to global humanitarian organization Children International, nearly half the world lives on less than $2.50 a day and 1 in 5 kids in the United States lives in poverty. Consider these ideas to make an impact on children in need now and well into the future: Become a mentor or coach. A positive role model can make a life-changing difference for a child from disadvantaged circumstances. As a mentor or a coach, you can help children explore and nurture their unique talents and guide them toward a successful future. Volunteer at a local school. Families increasingly rely on two incomes to support their households,

which means parents are less available to lend their time to their children’s classrooms or schools. At the same time, public school funding is shrinking. As a volunteer, you can help fill these gaps and contribute to bettering the learning opportunities for children in your community. Sponsor a child. You may be surprised to learn how far a monetary donation can go. For example, Children International supporters can join a monthly giving program and sponsor a child in poverty for $32 per month. Your donation establishes a connection with an individual child who receives access to life-changing benefits like medical care, educational support and lifeskills training. The institution is a CharityWatch toprated organization that serves 250,000 children in 10 countries. If a reoccurring donation is not right for you, the organization also accepts one-time donations. Learn more at children.org. Donate new or used items. Service organizations such as shelters generally operate on tight budgets and rely on contributions from the community. Gently used items in good condition such as children’s clothing of all sizes and warm bedding are generally welcome.

#First Time Fur Mom By Dawn McCarthy

I

LOVE December! The holidays are such a great time to spend with family and friends, where everyone gets to unplug, and be present. This year December brings a big Birthday for my Dad, who will be coming home to the states since he lives abroad. It is also a big Birthday for my fur kid, Josie. It will be 3 years ago this December 14th , that my precious little bundle of joy came into my life and changed my heart forever.

The Joy of Christmas & Birthdays! As a pet parent, I feel like there is nothing more fun than celebrating your dog’s "gotcha day" or birthday, and having it in December, when everyone is up for a party-makes for some fun themes…let’s face it-No party is complete without a theme. However, this year with so much tragedy that has happened in the world, I will be doing a “Give Back or Exchange” party with a few options for Josie's fur friends to chose from: 3. Another option would be purchasing The Barkens Holiday Bucket https://sniffandbarkens.com/ This bucket includes a collection of six high-quality dog toys from Hartz Pets, delivered to your home in a reusable bucket perfect for storing toys, food, and other dog supplies. Each Barken Bucket sale benefits Pilots N Paws to further assist their work in life-saving transports and rescue missions is an added bonus. Pilots N Paws is volunteer organization Christmas has many meanings, but for me it’s a time of year to a be thankful, and grateful. I am forever Thankful for Josie, who connecting pilots with other has brought so many new people into my life (ask me about the rescue groups to transport dogs connections I have made at the park). She has also inspired many in need to safe havens. This way ways I can make a difference in other pets lives. This holiday if you do wish to buy gifts-look for season, I hope you get time to enjoy the season, spend quality ones that have a great cause time with your fur kids and family, make memories… and of attached as well. I am also a huge fan of https://iheartdogs.com/ course-takes lots of pictures and videos.

1. Pet Adoption and Rescue: No silly-even though this is a time when many pets get adopted for Christmas gifts and so many are rescued, I am talking about asking guests to bring: gently used blankets, towels or cans of food that will be donated to our local shelter or rescue- This way it’s a gift that keeps on giving and keeping other, less fortunate pets, warm with full tummies.

2. Doggy Toy Exchange Party: Have you ever attended a clothing exchange party? Where people get together and bring their gently used clothing to exchange with their friends? Well, why not do this with the toys your dog doesn’t play with? You and your friends can bring toys that your dog no longer plays with and see if other dogs find them more interesting. It'll be a barking good time!

Sweet Potato-Pumpkin Puree

Recipe courtesy of Atkins.com Prep time: 20 minutes Total time: 1 hour, 20 minutes 3 large egg whites 5 tablespoons sugar substitute, divided 1/2 cup half pecans 1 1/2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled 1/4 cup unsalted butter stick 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 15 ounces pumpkin (without salt, drained, cooked and boiled) Heat oven to 250 F. Lightly butter baking sheet.

Salted Caramel Cheesecake Bites Recipe courtesy of “Atkins: Eat Right, Not Less” Prep time: 10 minutes Total time: 1 hour, 10 minutes Servings: 18 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/3 cup plain protein powder 2 tablespoons stevia 6 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature

1/3 cup chopped almonds or macadamia nuts 1 tablespoon sugar-free caramel syrup 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/8 teaspoon xanthan gum (optional) 1/4 teaspoon sea salt or sea salt flakes In large mixing bowl, combine heavy cream with protein powder and stevia. Whisk until smooth. Add cream cheese, almonds or macadamia nuts, caramel syrup and vanilla extract; blend until smooth. If cream cheese clumps slightly, mix with rubber spatula, breaking up bits of cream cheese against side of bowl.

In medium mixing bowl, beat egg whites with electric mixer at high speed until foamy. Gradually add 3 tablespoons sugar substitute and continue mixing until soft peaks form. Spoon onto prepared baking sheet and spread with spatula to 1/4-inch thickness. Bake 35 minutes. Turn oven off; let meringue stand in oven 45 minutes. Crush meringue and place in bowl. Add pecans and toss gently to combine. Set aside. While meringue is resting, place sweet potatoes in medium saucepan. Cover with water to 2 inches above potatoes and bring to boil. Cook until tender, about 20 minutes, and drain. Return saucepan to medium-high heat. Add potatoes, butter, cream, remaining sugar substitute, salt, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice and pumpkin puree. Stir to combine. Mash with potato masher until smooth. Heat through, about 1 minute. Transfer potato mixture to serving dish and cover with meringue topping.

Sprinkle mixture with xanthan gum, if desired, and mix about 30 seconds. Mixture will thicken slightly. Cover tray that will fit into freezer with sheet of wax paper. Using soup spoon, scoop mixture onto tray, making 18 mounds. Alternatively, use two silicone candy molds or empty ice cube tray coated with olive oil spray and press cheesecake mixture into 18 molds. Sprinkle with sea salt. Freeze at least one hour before serving. Note: Can be stored in freezer up to 1 month. Tip: Switch up flavors by using sugar-free hazelnut syrup in place of caramel and hazelnuts or walnuts instead of almonds.

t may be the most wonderful time of year, but it can also be one of the most dangerous. Along with the cooking and decorations that make the season magical, the holidays present risks for home fires and burns. An independent survey conducted by Shriners Hospitals for Children® found that many Americans do not follow key fire and burn safety tips despite being aware of dangerous risks. For example, 25 percent of respondents reported leaving lit candles unattended, and 27 percent said they have left them in reach of children. “Some of these findings seem alarming, but each year our burn hospitals see the unfortunate results – children who have been injured in cooking related accidents or in fires associated with holiday decorations or candles,” said Kenneth Guidera, M.D., chief medical officer for Shriners Hospitals for Children. “These injuries can mean years of ongoing treatments and extensive rehabilitation for a child. That’s why we encourage families to learn about fire safety and prevention before a tragedy occurs.” Fire and burn hazards are prevalent in many homes throughout the holidays, and Shriners Hospitals for Children offers these tips to remind families how to stay safe: n

Never leave lit candles unattended. If you must use flame-burning candles, make

sure to extinguish them when you leave the room. When cooking, turn pot handles toward the back of the stove, out of the reach of children. n Never leave a hot stove or oven unattended. n While cooking, keep a lid or cookie sheet nearby to cover a pan if its contents catch fire. n If you decorate using a live, fresh-cut Christmas tree, water it daily. n Keep trees and other flammable decor at least 3 feet away from heaters and flames. n Discard decorative lights with bare wires, frays or kinks. n Make sure your home is equipped with working smoke alarms and fire extinguishers. n Have an escape plan in case of a fire and practice it with your family members so they know how to react if a fire does occur. n Know the burn care resources in your community. n

The Shriners Hospitals locations that specialize in burn care provide critical, surgical and rehabilitative care to children with varying degrees of new and healed burns. Their state-of-the-art burn facilities are staffed and equipped to provide reconstructive and restorative surgery for healed burns, as well as treatments for various other skin

CANDLE SAFETY FOR THE HOLIDAYS Candles are one of the most common sources of holiday fires. Never leave lit candles unattended and take these additional precautions to have a safe and fun holiday season: n

n

When candles are lit, make sure they are in stable holders and placed where they cannot be easily knocked over. Keep candles, matches and lighters out of reach of children. Be conscious of nearby surroundings. Never place a candle near drapery, decorations or other flammable items that may easily catch fire. Also avoid drafty areas or fans, which can accelerate flames or accidentally blow a flammable item onto a candle. Know that the safest way to extinguish a candle is with a snuffer. Consider using wickless or flameless candles. There are numerous options that cast a warm glow so you can enjoy the ambiance of a candle without the risk.

Kids and Candles Don’t Mix

Julianna and her mother, Tracy, know firsthand how dangerous the holiday season can be. While at a family Christmas party, Julianna, just 20 months old, snuck away from the activities and was in the bathroom playing in front of the mirror. A lit tea light candle on the corner of the sink ignited her clothes. Tracy heard Julianna’s screams from down the hall, ran to the bathroom and saw her daughter’s dress on fire. She patted out the flames and family members called an ambulance. Julianna spent three weeks at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Cincinnati to treat the third-degree burns that covered the left side of her body. Julianna, now 8-yearsold, is doing well but faces ongoing treatment as she grows. “We are very lucky,” Tracy said. “Julianna will be fine thanks to the care she received. We all get busy during this time of year, but it is so important for parents to make sure they are following basic safety tips to keep their kids safe.”

Miah's Message PEACE ON EARTH By Miah Green The hustle and bustle of the holiday season has began in full force! As everyone is rushing into stores, I am packing to perform for the Nobel Peace Prize Concert with my Le PeTiT CiRqUe® team.

The definition of Peace is freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility. I was thinking about what PEACE means to me and how I can contribute to peace in the world as an 11 year old. I broke the word down to the simplest form:

Le PeTiT CiRqUe® is confirmed for the 24th annual event in Oslo, Norway on December 11th at Telenor Arena, honoring the Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Le PeTiT CiRqUe® joins an elite group of artists who have performed at the concert over the years, including Paul McCartney, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Sting, Andrea Bocelli, Tina Turner, Ellie Goulding, Kygo, A-ha and many others. The winner of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize is the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Arms (ICAN) “for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons”. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to an individual or group for their outstanding contribution in PEACE. 50 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

My hope this holiday season is that everyone thinks about P.E.A.C.E. in a way that everyone can contribute to ideal. Just imagine how amazing the world would be if we all encouraged a caring environment wherever we are. May your holiday season be filled with peace, love and joy!
