SLEEVE SLITS

BY ELLE GRANT

The sleeves of the summer, sleeve slits, exude a demure yet casual elegance both on tops and dresses. It is surprisingly practical as well. Having slit sleeves results in a much cooler effect for the summer. This look is extremely stylish with a pair of white jeans and statement shades for a powerful look. YELLOW Nothing is more summer than sunshine, and many are tapping in on this trend with the color yellow. Warmer, happy tones are working their way towards pastel to embody what summer is all about. From tops to dresses, skirts, shoes and more, bright splashes of yellow have been all over the most couture runways. The trend even extending all the way to festivals and street style. Though it may seem a daunting color to pull off, the summer trend of yellow can easily Left to Right: Creatures of Comfort, Kate Spade New York

be managed in a dress with simple accessories to let the color speak for itself. Embracing yellow as a trend of the summer will be almost as easy as embracing the summer sunshine itself!

SEASIDE STRIPES Pulled straight off the classic beaches of New England, the seaside stripe has pasted itself all over swimsuits, shorts and more of the season. These thick stripes on runways like Mulberry presented themselves as the epitome of summer in a pattern. It is easy to pair with jeans for a casual look. With a breezy summer staple such as a maxi dress, this trend is wearable while still incredibly stylish for all one’s summer events. RUFFLES The prim and proper ruffles of the winter season are transforming to soft and romantic frills for the summer. Capping shirt sleeves especially of the white and pastel variety are extremely popular as are using ruffles as accents on soft dresses or skirts. This light and feminine style is perfect for adding a bit of spunk to a classic summer look with its careful detailing. Designers like Dolce & Gabbana had the romantic power of ruffles all over their runways. This trend is sure to spill into the streets for the summer.

OFF THE SHOULDERS It seems everywhere, in all areas of fashion that the trend of the summer is the off the shoulder top. Paired with jeans for a breezy summer look, or taken up a notch on a dress or paired with a skirt; the off the shoulder top is the quintessential summer trend. Its popularity may radiate from its tasteful yet teasing display of skin as well as the different silhouettes it creates for many classic summer tops. At runways like Diane Von Furtsenberg and David Koma, the off the shoulder top was mixed with other summer trends for a more daring and formal look, but the classic off the shoulder style is an easy one to pull off with a casual jean and sandal for a summer outing. SHIRTDRESSES Shirtdresses of all kinds from the classic structure or less typical options like rolled

sleeves, funky patterns, or cutouts are the perfect option for summer. The perfect melding of an option that is slightly dressy but still casual, the shirtdress is easy to wear and exudes a quiet, cool elegance. It also touches on the male inspired trends that have popped up in recent years and can be styled to have a bit edgier look. Whatever look you are going for this summer whether it be cool and casual, chic and elegant, or tomboyish and menswear inspired, the shirtdress can be an important, wearable piece in creating the ideal summer vibe. SHEER As the temperature of the summer months rises, the popularity of light, breathable and sheer fabrics are all the rage. Sheer tops that range from airy and white with a feminine feel, to a darker shade perhaps lined with glitter. Both have been making appearances at the festivals this season, usually paired with a bralette underneath. However, more intensity takes on this trend appeared on runways with sheer dresses, skirts, and pants. Left to Right: Banana Republic, DKNY

Natural Beauty Tips… Straight from professional models

From the delicate rose to the simple mint leaf, professional models from Boston to New York have learned a thing or two about harnessing plants to improve their beauty routines.

Rose Petals Roses have an exotic scent and can refresh your skin naturally. They contain anti-oxidants that fight off free radicals, skin irritants, excess sebum and germs. Refresh your face with rose petal powder and liquid honey to cool and freshen your face! To make a rose petal face mask, powder dried rose buds in your spice grinder then mix this powder with raw honey and apply it to your face. Rinse off after 15 minutes for clean and bright skin! Rose Facial Toner
Create a sweet-smelling oil control facial toner using fresh/dried rose petals! You will need a little less than a handful of fresh/dried rose buds and 1 cup of pure water. Place the water in a pan and bring the water to a boil. Remove the water from the heat source, throw in your rose buds and cover the pan. Let it steep for around 30 minutes. When the solution has completely cooled off, add 3 drops of rose essential oil or geranium essential oil and store it in a clean spray bottle. Spritz this on your face after cleansing and whenever for toned skin!

Cucumber

"I've been using Aloe Vera straight from a plant for over 25 yrs. It is the only moisturizer I have used with the best results for my skin." -TBW Model Elsa Rocha

It is known that cucumber helps in reducing swelling around the eyes or the big dark circles under your eyes. This is world-wide treatment which is being used to its maximum extent. Cucumbers are the most wonderful and natural eye pads you can find for yourself. The puffiness and the tiredness in your eyes may just leave you, if you do this in a relaxed fashion. These natural eye pads do wonders after a long day’s work. If you want happy skin, then cucumber is the answer. As cucumber and the skin share the same level of hydrogen, it becomes easier for cucumber to mask all the problem areas. It helps in soothing and softening your skin which can get you relaxed in no time.

Lavender Aside from its remarkable aromatherapy properties, Lavender has excellent healing effects on the skin. As a natural antiseptic, lavender can cleanse acne causing bacteria from the skin and is a great way to achieve blemish-free skin and to treat minor skin conditions. Its anti-inflammatory and restorative properties both soothe irritated and blemished skin. It aids in the healing of wounds and the fading of scars.

Mint Mint is a delightful herb with a lovely fragrance and several beauty benefits. Loaded with menthol and antibacterial properties, it makes for a great moisturizer, cleanser, toner and astringent. To tighten your pores, crush a few mint leaves, mix them with honey and apply the mixture directly to your skin. Mint also treats acne, it is rich in salicylic acid, making it an effective acne treatment. Grind mint leaves with rose water and apply the mixture to your face. If you have severe acne, leave it on overnight. To treat acne scars, make a paste of mint juice, tomato juice and Fuller’s earth. To diminish age spots, mix mint juice and cucumber juice and apply them to your skin. Preventing wrinkles is another great way to use mint, simply mix one egg white, curd, honey and mint juice together to make a face pack.

Last but not least… Aloe Vera • • • • • • • •

It treats sunburn. It acts as a moisturizer. It treats acne. It fights aging. It lessens the visibility of stretch marks. It's nutrient rich for good health. It soothes in periodontal disease. It aids in digestion.

Inside Out

Bringing Comfortable & Stylish Living Outside

By Lori Mattlingly

Nature is a popular interior decorating theme and designers often use the term “bringing the outside in” to describe using natural features like plants and rocks inside – but what about bringing the inside out? Design a relaxing and stylish outdoor living space by bringing some of your indoor design ideas outside. Whether you want to create an outdoor dining room, kitchen or entertainment area, your back yard is the perfect place for summer fun.

Enclose your gazebo or pergola in colorful outdoor curtains to frame the outdoor space and create shade from the sun. Add some potted plants and throw pillows with your favorite colors to create that peaceful oasis or entertainment area. Place an outdoor area rug under your seating area or dining furniture. You might want to use light neutral colors with some pops of red or orange shades or use a lot of bold colors together and make it festive. Not only will you get the benefit of enjoying your outdoor space, but it will increase your property value.

Loving my

Curves

By Kelsey Hill

Who doesn’t love curves? I surely love mine. I was taught by my parents and agents to always love myself. They spoke of being comfortable and embracing my body. I am honored to get this chance to shed light on the unknown world of plus-size modeling. I hope to spark the minds of any aspiring young models.

I am plus-size by the fashion industry standards, which I wasn’t aware of until after meeting my agents. During my college years in New York City, I walked door to door with an amateur portfolio. I didn’t get the results I had hoped for. A couple years later I was selling fragrances at the Warwick Mall in Rhode Island, where I met Pat Cruz. Pat is a huge event specialist and entrepreneur. She asked me to be in her bridal runway show that weekend. The day of the show is when I met Pamela Masucci. She not only became my agent for over 11 years, but became a lifelong friend. With the help of Pamela’s reference, I was able to join the ranks of Maggie Inc., the top modeling agency in Boston. I still can’t put into words how lucky I am to have met and worked with such amazing professionals today. There are many challenges within the modeling industry. Aspiring models should keep in mind that they need a reliable job to fall back on. Most models in NYC need to have a part time jobs while they establish their clientele. Learning how to balance your work life and maintain a healthy lifestyle is imperative. Once I was marketed as a plus-size and lifestyle model, I became more comfortable with myself. I have had the pleasure of working for many years with one of my favorite Boston designers, Denise Hajjar. Denise loves and specializes in making stunning clothing for women of all shapes and sizes. Modeling is hard work, but it can be incredibly rewarding. I have gained lifelong friendships with many model sisters and industry professionals. Every day is a new beginning and sometimes you never know the opportunity that is around the corner. Be true to yourself, and never give up on your passions in life! PC: Michael Sparks Keegan

Red Cheetah Yoga: Yoga Goes Viral By Nikki McGowan & Alonso Sanchez

Red Cheetah Yoga; not the usual image associated with the practice of yoga. A powerful, predatorial cat seems to be the antithesis of what yoga stands for. Yet here it is. Red Cheetah Yoga is the first yoga company to exist as an online studio; a team of teachers who come together to deliver empowered and mobility-driven sequences. The imagery of the world’s fastest feline conjures the image of athleticism at it’s peak, and as it should. The sequences are designed for athletes and weekend warriors alike to rehabilitate their bodies to go back to the gym, hitting workouts harder, faster, and stronger. This requires a sequence that is designed to be a little slower, more deliberate, and hit the ranges of motion that people who like to train hard need. So, essentially, consider red cheetahs as the world’s slowest cheetahs. Video access is on the new social media site, Soul Akademy, that is exclusively for fitness. This site is selective in who it allows to have professional profiles. The application process rigorously weeds out the fakes and the certificate-less buffs whose sixpacks may be of Instagram fame, but little to no education to back them up.

Soul Akademy has arrived to raise the standard of the online fitness professional, and it has a steadily growing following. Currently, Red Cheetah Yoga has varying lengths and styles of videos: • Rehabilitative Yoga for Athletes: these classes are truly open to anyone, not just athletes or those who hit the gym hard on the regular. These are great yoga sequences for anyone looking for a solid yoga practice and want something not too restorative and not too fast. • Meditative Yoga: slow your pace down even more. Feeling stressed? These classes are for you. An emphasis on grounding, easy poses and deep breathing that puts your mind right where you need it to be: on zencation. • Crystal Singing Bowl Meditation Audio Files: Need something deep right NOW? Grab your headphones and plug in to these audio files on soulakademy.com. Some of these are for pure meditation with a bell chime at the end to rouse you from your headspace, and others are designed for sleep; a bit shorter, and no bell at the end to let you drift off into your best slumber. • Power Yoga Sequences: looking to sweat? Don’t have a lot of time? Check out the Power Yoga 10 Minute Burn if you need something quick that will get your heart pumping. Dynamic, powerful, and bound to be a sequence you have never experienced before. Did we mention the Red Cheetah Yoga sequences are all totally unique, brand-new never-seen-before flows? They’re also totally accessible to yogis of all levels. RCY’s commitment is to bring the quality yoga you want and need right to your devices, wherever you are in the world. With rentable videos at a fraction of the cost of studios, create your Enthusiast profile today to get signed on, get on your yoga mat, and sprint into the next level of yoga for athletes, power yoga, and meditation classes. 10 FACTS You never knew about...

COCO CHANEL 1 She introduced pants for women Coco Chanel shocked the world when she wore pants in Venice to make traveling by gondola easier! Chanel also came to the conclusion that there was no comfortable way to ride a horse while wearing a long skirt.

2 She launched the first designer scent Coco Chanel gave the world the most famous perfume, Chanel No 5. The perfume launched in 1921 and had its place in history set when Marilyn Monroe was asked what she wore to bed, and she simply answered “Just a few drops of Chanel No 5.”

3 She grew up at an orphanage When Chanel was 12 her mother died of bronchitis, her father sent her two brothers to work at a farm, and then left the three sisters to the convent of Aubazine, which ran an orphanage. In an interview, current creative director of the brand, Karl Lagerfeld, said that he had “a lot of admiration for the child because she had no education, incredibly poor parents, an absent father, nothing”.

4 She made costume jewelry fashionable Before Coco Chanel, wearing fake pearls, glass stones, and non valuable metals was a major faux pas, but the designer soon changed the image of costume jewelry and made it a chic and affordable alternative for women of every class.

“A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” -Coco Chanel

5 She had a bitter personality

Coco Chanel never missed a chance to criticize her colleagues. She accused Christian Dior of dressing women like “armchairs”, and said that she admired Balenciaga’s designs but “questioned” his ability to cut.

6 Black was her favorite color Although white, beige, gold and red are iconic for Chanel, black was her favorite color. For Coco Chanel, black revealed a woman’s radiance and “accentuated the essential”. Chanel is also credited with inventing the “little black dress”, a staple of the storied fashion house.

7 Coco who? Gabrielle Chanel acquired the name “Coco” while she was singing. She became identified with two popular songs ” Ko Ko Ri Ko” and “Qui qu’a vu Coco”. Later, she would tell everyone that “Coco” is the nickname given to her by her father.

8 She was a cabaret singer.. at first The only money she earned from singing at a café-concert was what she managed to get when a plate was passed among the audience in appreciation of her performance.

9 She stepped into the world of fashion by designing hats Coco Chanel learned how to sew at the orphanage. She became a licensed milliner in 1910 and even opened a boutique at 21 rue Cambon, Paris, named Chanel Modes. Her first clients were simple women.

10 The funeral At her funeral, her coffin was covered with white flowers (camellias, gardenias, orchids, azaleas and red roses). Coco Chanel is buried in Lausanne, Switzerland. Her headstone was designed by the designer herself and features the lion. Inscribed on the headstone is the words, “Without stone above me, I would like to leave if I had the wish to go to Heaven and dress the angels.

M E X I C O THE MODEL JETSET

By Alicia Mendonza

Traveling as a model is an incredible adventure. If you ever have the chance to do it, I would say do not hesitate after my experience on the lovely island of Cozumel, Mexico. When you travel for work, there is a commitment in having all expenses paid for you to attend the trip. Many people do not realize the amount of work that goes into shooting magazine images on tropical island. Although it is easy to become caught up in the ambience of crystal clear water and unfamiliar cultures, the biggest thing I learned on the Underwater Mermaid Saga excursion was to remind myself that this is also a job. Many folks who land on a tropical island typically head to the bar for a fruity cocktail followed by lounge time at the pool. When myself and the other underwater model, Amy Meloski, landed on the island, we grabbed delicious fresh mangos paired with bottled water as we ventured to our room to prep. Although our stellar team of divers, clothing designers, photographers, and videographers enjoyed the occasional kick back in a beach chair; much of our experience on the island was working long days. We started our trip modeling swimsuit brands “Zmtree” and “Maillot De Bain”. Our team hopped in a jeep wrangler and jetted across the island to the beaches of San Martin. Here we worked tirelessly against the natural elements of sand, wind, and water for the perfect swimsuit shots. The following days consisted of underwater mermaid photography for Mexican Diver Magazine and Underwater Digital Fiesta Images 2017. I slipped into my mermaid tail, adjusted my seashells, and dove off the boat into the waters of El Cielo; the sea star fortress. This was another day filled with hours of swimming while also looking the effortless part of a mermaid in her natural habitat among the reef. Of course after these long days in the sun, the occasional margarita was enjoyed. You’re in Mexico after all! However each morning we awoke early and our heads did not hit the pillow at night again until many hours had passed after the sun set. The biggest thing I have taken away from this trip as a working model is the following… 1. Pack what you need! For example, do not rely on any one else to have your sunscreen especially if you’re a freckly redhead like myself. 2. Bring snacks. You will be working very long days where physical strength is required. Water and snacks is key. 3. Prep before your trip. For me this was eating extra clean and working out longer than normal. You want to present your best self on this trip. 4. Finally, soak up every amazing moment while you work! Take a moment to stop and stare into the beautiful aqua water. You should be having a blast while you are there too. I will certainly be heading back to Cozumel one day; whether for work or play. The sea life, culture, and beautiful resort was something I found incredible. If you are ever invited to a foreign country to work as a model, do not just walk to the opportunity but run! It is worth every moment.

EDITOR ’S FINAL

THOUGHTS Summer is a short season where nature is at its peak, making cherished memories that much sweeter to make! Issue three represents so much growth for StyleUp as a magazine, but above all reflects the sheer beauty and talent that resides within New England. The centerpiece of this issue was the youthful and elegant brand, Elizabeth McKay. This allowed us to take a fresh look at where a niche of New England fashion stands today. The bright patterns, vintage cuts, and luxurious fabrics were indeed present. However, the brand’s commitment to thoughtful modern innovation was above all. Valenadi Swimwear was another honor to showcase with its sexy and sophisticated designs, reflecting women who can command a beach or yacht with style. Our collection of featured designers range from Andrea Valentini and Luvia Garcia, to makeup artists, business owners, writers, models, and many more. They have all made this issue so great that the support will continuously be remembered. Fashion is meant to inspire, and it has certainly inspired me. I remember being a young child flipping through glossy magazines. Little did I know it would lead me to becoming an ambitious model in the high fashion worlds of New York and Milan. Fashion continues to touch my life in many ways. Forging this magazine is a labor of love for my team and I. Creating this magazine for our readers to feel the same inspiration that guided my life, is the primary goal. To better achieve this goal as well as maintain our commitment to quality, StyleUp will be undergoing two big changes. Primarily, upcoming issues will be released bi-annually beginning with our Fall/Winter edition. StyleUp will also be reorganizing its website to better engage with our readers. On behalf of StyleUp, thank you for reading our magazine. We are dedicated to promoting and showcasing the ever-evolving world in New England fashion. Stay with us- and expect more.
