Strokes – Women Take the Lead In the battle of the sexes, here’s one that women – often unknowingly – take the lead in: About 55,000 more women than men have strokes every year. A recent study shared through the National Stroke Association listed these factors that can increase stroke risk in women: • Menstruation before the age of 10 • Menopause before age 45 • Low levels of the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEAS) • Taking oral estrogen or combined oral contraceptives Other general risk factors for stroke include family history, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, lack of exercise, and being overweight. Whatever stage of life a woman is in, it’s important to be aware of all risk factors. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have questions. For more information on stroke programs available at Corpus Christi Rehabilitation Hospital, call 361-906-3700.

Recovery Time One of the most frequent questions that is asked of me is the recovery time from procedures. This is useful in planning pre-wedding, reunion, holiday etc. While this can vary by situation, most fall into the following timelines. Surgical Cases- In all cases, you can start driving after the pain has reached a level where there is only need for the occasional tylenol or ibuprofen. After liposuction, activity restrictions are for a few days. Breast augmentation, lifts and reductions, gynecomastia resections and facelifts all have a similar recovery time and you can resume activities in a few days and full activity in two weeks. Arm lifts and thigh lifts are also similar to breast surgery. With all of the above, most can return to work within a week. Abdominoplasties and rhinoplasties require a longer recovery but most can return to work in ten days. Strenuous activity can be resumed in 6 weeks. Injectables such as Botox, Juvederm & Restalyne have a down time of a few hours before returning to regular activities, no strenuous activity for 24 hours. For skin procedures, many procedures have no downtime including Facials, Microdermabrasion, Hydro-Facials and Dermaplaning. There may be some slight swelling the day of the procedure. Chemical Peels do not have a down time per se, but
depending on the strength of the peel, your skin can be peeling for several days after. Laser Treatments (including Scar revision and hair removal) require no strenuous activity for 24 hours and no sun exposure for up to a week. Microneedling and Photorejuvenation of the skin can have mild redness and swelling 2-24hrs post treatment. The skin will feel tender like a mild sunburn for up to 48hours. These are of course only a small offering of the procedures in our office. Our Licensed Aesthetician Ashley Wendt is happy to give you a free skin care consultation. It is very important to make sure your plastic surgeon is well trained, has completed his/her residency successfully and is board certified. In plastic surgery, a membership in the American Board of Plastic Surgery confirms that your surgeon has successfully completed residency, passed their board exams, and follow the high ethical and professional standards set by the organization. Not everyone is board certified. It is also important to make sure that you have a good rapport with your plastic surgeon and his/her office staff. -Dr. Vijay

On the cover: Here at The Bend Magazine, the Artist Issue is always one of our favorites to work on. Being able to meet different local artists and be taken through their creative process is such a special thing. With this issue, we decided to focus on color and how it affects each artist. The cover, featuring the piece “March” by Amanda Flores, is a perfect example of how colors work with one another in order to create a compelling composition. VOLUME 5/ISSUE

Our featured artists are always inspired by color— where does your inspiration come from? Kylie Kinnett, Managing Editor
I have always been both inspired and fascinated with people. Everyone has a unique story of their own. Every time I sit down with someone to interview for a story, I am captivated by whatever it is they are passionate about. Everyone I have ever interviewed has left some type of impact on my life and has inspired me to not only tell their story, but live my own.
Jarred Schuetze, Associate Art Director
As a creative designer, I strive to be influenced by everything around me. My inspiration on the other hand is a bit more contrived. I find my biggest inspiration comes from isolating myself in nature. Being surrounded by organic structures and graphic textures allows my mind the freedom to exaggerate design concepts and explore the ideas I wouldn’t normally approach sitting behind a computer screen.

I am inspired by reading. Books, magazines, poems – I love how skillfully writers can showcase their style through words. I sometimes find the deepest inspiration by reading clever advertising copy on a billboard or seeing eccentric wordplay in street art. Reading helps me feel connected to the world around me and in turn, it provides the creative landscape to write the stories of the people who live in it.

JUNE / Letter From The Publisher
We're Not in Kansas Anymore
W
hat you are holding in your hands is not just a magazine – it’s a portal. Once you open it, you are stepping into a whole new world of color. The feeling reminds me of the first time I saw the film The Wizard of Oz and watched as the screen transformed from a dull sepia tone to an explosion of color as Dorothy enters the Land of Oz. As you step into the different worlds of four local artists, they will serve as your guide to the intricacies of color patterns. You will learn about the emotions different colors provoke and the stories they tell. You will also discover the challenges artists face when using color in a painting. Gilbert Cantu, who paints oil on canvas, battled with using color for a long time before seeing a vibrant colored painting of Jesus in a dream. I couldn’t imagine living in a sepia toned universe. The Coastal Bend is a beautiful region popping with natural colors. Artists across our region are adding their own touch almost daily to buildings, restaurants, coffee shops, galleries and pop-up shops around town. I am thankful to these artists for being ambassadors of color to our cities and homes. They remind us that art is an important part of our culture and daily lives. I hope you are as moved and inspired as we are by the works of art you encounter here. The images alone speak for themselves. They tell a story and take you to a place of their own. Unlike Dorothy, however, this is one place you will never want to leave. Jordan Regas, Publisher

I am famous for losing at least one pair of glasses every summer, which always makes me hesitant to invest in a nice pair. But, the spread on page 24 lays out a nice selection of shades all reasonably priced and available at local establishments. The photos, styled and shot by Jarred Schuetze at the pool inside The Cosmopolitan apartment complex, really capture the perfect summer vibe.

ROSÉ COLORED glasses Words and Photos By: Jarred Schuetze Location: The Cosmopolitan of Corpus Christi
Sunglasses are no longer just an accessory you wear while going to the beach, but a bold and stylish extension of any outfit no matter the season. For some of us, stepping outside into sunshine is to simply locate a tried-and-true pair of Wayfarers or Aviators and be done with it. For those of us a bit more detail oriented, it’s a painstaking half hour of careful consideration between several pairs, typically hinging on color, climate, and context. Being that summer has reared it’s much awaited rays of sunshine on the Coastal Bend, we felt it necessary to showcase a few stun24 The Bend
ning shades that pair perfectly with a poolside rosé. Uncork the fabulous hues of pink and blush that radiate off these attention grabbing sunglasses. The style and color pop these glasses provide are simply inspiring and are sure to be the perfect accessory to any summer outfit. Another amazing thing about the sunglasses is that they don’t break the bank – each of the sunglasses are priced under $20. Affordable while not skimping on style or function. Perfect for those who tend to break or lose sunglasses more often than not – you know who you are. Start seeing the world through rosé colored glasses - happy shopping.

18 Horsepower Local rehabilitation center is improving lives, one ride at a time
T
By: Alexis Mays Photos by: Rachel Benavides
here’s a therapeutic center in Flour Bluff whose seasoned professionals are named Chevy, Sugs, and Apple Pie.
These three horses, along with fifteen others, are therapy animals at The Glenoak Therapeutic Riding Center, an accredited, equine-assisted therapy and rehabilitation center for children and adults with physical, mental, emotional, and learning disabilities. Horse therapy can be used to treat many conditions, including spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, and multiple sclerosis.
Physically, the therapy helps by taking disabled riders through a complex series of movements that use all the body’s muscles. “The horse rhythmically and naturally moves the body in a manner similar to the human gait, improving posture, balance and muscle control,” Thomas explains. This treatment creates more than head-to-toe physical benefits; it helps patients inside and out. “Benefits of Equine-Assisted Therapy are increased concentration, spatial awareness/orientation, self-awareness and self-discipline,” Thomas lists. “Also, increased independence at home and school and self-esteem due to the acquisition of a skill in a recognized sport.” Their eighteen horses are used in private lessons and in group classes, which are held Monday through Saturday. They serve a wide range of South Texas, and it’s all been done without running a single commercial. “We don’t do any advertisement.” Thomas says, “All our clients have come to us from doctors’ referrals and word of mouth. Our students come from as far south as the Valley and as far north as Victoria.”
Charlene Thomas is the founder and program director of The Glenoak Therapeutic Riding Center. She explains the center’s purpose is individualized for each patient, but there’s a standard for their outcomes. “Glenoak’s goal is to help each rider achieve the maximum independence his or her circumstances will allow.”
Although the business is thriving, Thomas hardly considers running The Glenoak Therapeutic Riding Center work. “This is not a job, it is my passion.” Thomas continues, “At the age of 70, to be able to live your passion and see the smiles on these riders’ faces when they are on the horses is a gift from God.”
In fact, equine therapy is often described as “miracle treatments.” Stable Life Inc. reports that the first study about the benefits of horseback riding dates back to 1875, and recent studies about horses’ healing powers continue to show significant outcomes.
Contact:
“The relationship between riders and the certified therapeutic riding instructors, special therapy horses, and volunteers is the catalyst to miracles in the lives of these gifted riders,” says Thomas. 32 The Bend

Jimmy Pena For this talented Corpus Christi artist, art is not just a hobby; it’s a way of life. By: Jacqueline Gonzalez Photo by: Rachel Benavides
YOU SET A GOAL TO PAINT 100 PORTRAITS OF 100 PEOPLE IN ONE YEAR. HOW DID YOU BEGIN THIS PROJECT?
CHEECH MARIN RECENTLY PURCHASED SOME OF YOUR PORTRAITS. TELL US ABOUT THAT.
This all began as an exercise to loosen up as an artist. I’ve been making art for over 20 years, and I found myself spending too much time trying to improve each little detail. I wanted everything to be exact, and it was driving me crazy. With every art piece, I tried harder and harder, and it was getting to the point where making art was no longer fun. I decided to begin this new project in which I give myself one year to paint 100 different portraits of adults from all age groups. This would not only help me improve in areas that needed work, but I would also grow as an artist.
Oh, man. I felt like a kid when Cheech and his wife showed up at my studio. I couldn’t believe that he was sitting right there in front of me. This is someone I grew up watching on TV. I was just like any other fan - star struck. He was actually in town for his own art show, and we discussed art. He saw a few of my charcoal drawings, but he was really into the paintings. He purchased the portraits I created of him and his wife, as well as six other portraits from the 100-portrait collection. It was surreal!
HOW HAS IT EVOLVED OVER TIME?
Well, the initial goal was 100 portraits. I completed the 100th portrait, which was a self-portrait. It was interesting, to say the least. With one hand, I held a mirror, and with the other hand, I painted. Since I finished the 100th portrait before the one-year mark, I decided to work on a few more. I was hoping to feature more diversity in my portraits; I was hoping for a variety of culture. But the end result is still incredible, and I’m grateful for every step of the way. 36 The Bend
WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR THE EXHIBITION?
I was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity of a one-man show, downstairs in the K-Space Contemporary Gallery. It’s a big deal for me. The show will be held on July 6th. I hope to have everyone show up and enjoy the hard work that I put into this project. Contact: Facebook: Jimmy Pena @jmypenia

2018 SCHEDULE
D
r. Kingsley Okonkwo has always been interested in soccer, and that passion has created a pastime and profession for generations of Corpus Christi youths.
“I’ve always wanted to do something with soccer,” Dr. Okonkwo begins. “For two years, I wondered what do we bring to Corpus Christi, how we do this, what’s the process?” Then, the idea for a soccer club came to him and some friends in the summer of 2016. By early 2017, Corpus Christi Football Club (CCFC) was a registered LLC. Dr. Okonkwo, who is the president of the CCFC, explains that it happened quickly thanks to months of hard work behind the scenes. “A lot went into it,” Dr. Okonkwo says. “We basically started from the ground up. We founded the company, registered it, applied for the franchise, started looking for a stadium, marketed from scratch…we did everything from scratch.” From nothing to something incredible, what they have created is a minor league soccer team in Corpus Christi with 23 players on their roster. These men, aged 18 and up, have a professional platform to further their talent or even go pro. “We have many quality players in the Coastal Bend,” Dr. Okonkwo proudly states. “We wanted to give them a pathway to move from being high school players and have an opportunity to expose them to the very highest level of soccer in the country.” Their commitment to excellence meant before the club’s first year had even ended, the United Soccer League (USL) and Professional Development League (PDL) awarded The Sharks a franchise expansion in October 2017.
April 21 with Houston FC (home game)
“The Major League Soccer (MLS) is the top level of professional soccer, then below them is the USL. The USL has the largest soccer registration in the country.” Since 2014, the USL has more than doubled in size. Their large footprint in the ‘football’ community includes owning and operating the Professional Development League. The team was keen on The Sharks receiving the PDL distinction because, as Dr. Okonkwo explains, the PDL is the premiere group that works with young players to become professionals.”
May 11 with Houston FC (away game) May 13 with AHFC Royal (away game) May 19 with FC Cleburne (home game) May 25 with Texas United (home game) May 30 with Houston FC (away game) June 4 with Texas United (away game) June 9 with Brazos Valley (away game) June 18 with FC Cleburne (away game) June 22 with Houston FC (home game) June 24 with Brazos Valley (home game) June 30 with OKC Energy (home game)
That PDL designation allows The Sharks the chance to play at a higher level of competition. In fact, teams that are a part of the PDL are also eligible to compete in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup along with various exhibitions.
July 6 with Texas United (home game) July 8 with AHFC (away game) July 15 with OKC Energy (away game)
The USL PDL is made up of 74 teams across the United States and Canada, and eight of these teams reside in The Shark’s division. Most of them are based in Texas, and the farthest team is located in Oklahoma City. A few clubs whose teams go head-to-head with The Sharks include the Albion Hurricanes Football Club Royals, Brazos Valley Football Association, the Houston Football Club, and the Oklahoma City Football Club. This season, The Sharks have eight home games and seven away games on their roster. “We play virtually every week. Some weeks, we even play two games,” he says. Dr. Okonkwo encourages everyone to support our community and its players by attending the games. Two ticket options available are “flex” game day tickets for individual nights and season passes. Save the date for three games this month, June 22, 24, and 30.

During weeks when The Sharks are playing out of town, there are still ways to watch. Follow the CCFC’s Facebook and Twitter for watch party locations, along with food and drink specials. November 2018 is another important date to mark on your calendar. This is when hopeful players can attend a try-out for The Sharks. Four tryouts were planned for this season, so be sure to keep an eye on their website and social media to stay up to date. Dr. Okonkwo encourages fans to visit their website to learn more about the club and their mission, which goes beyond the game. While The Corpus Christi Football Club may be a minor league sport, the group’s goals go beyond scoring goals. Part of the Corpus Christi Football Club’s mission is ‘developing players on and off the field and molding our youths to become better professionals and well-rounded individuals.’ “As a physician myself, I very much understand the health benefits of being active,” Dr. Okonkwo begins. “In addition to being healthy and active, parents and kids are spending time together, outside, at the stadium.”
. . .

In fact, a main objective of the club was to be family-oriented. “We wanted to bring families together to watch the soccer events. That’s why children 5 and under come to our games for free. We want this to be a family event.” And then, extending even beyond families, the Corpus Christi Football Club exists to bring our community together as well. “We want people to know we’re here to serve. We’re here to unite our society and community with the beautiful game called soccer. The primary reason behind everything we do is to bring people together. Every game – everything we’re doing – is to bring our society together.” Our area will have that opportunity during the many home games in the 2018 season, which runs from April to July. The stadium for home games is held at the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer Stadium - TAMUCC, located at 800 Nile Street, Corpus Christi, TX. During home matches, the gates open at 5:45 p.m. and the game kicks off at 7:00 p.m.

Each match seeks to fulfill their mission by creating a good time for players and their families alike. As Dr. Okonkwo goes on to say, “We want to get people together and speak the common language of soccer. We want everyone to enjoy a beautiful day of soccer.”

IN Color A look into four different artists’ work and their philosophy on color

ook at the world around you. Colors make up the images we know and remember, but they also elicit strong emotions. Red evokes passion, orange conjures up energy, yellow brings happiness, blue emotes serenity and trustworthiness, and purple bathes us in luxury and romance.
Regardless of the medium, artists consider how colors interact before beginning a new piece, understanding that each creation will stimulate emotions. While our featured artists have different artistic styles, color connects them all like a piece of thread sewn through patchwork.
THE ARTIST PHILOSOPHY For Mayra Zamora, color is all she has ever known. “I’ve never been afraid of color,” she says, “that’s all I see.” The 31-year-old Chicana artist has created a brand identity which relies heavily on her use of color. This is evident when you glance around her living room, which she calls a vault of sorts. Tons of her pieces reside proudly on the walls, each work featuring a vibrant arrangement of colors telling a bold story. “As grotesque as this sounds, I would love to make someone throw up one day because of all the color,” she says, laughing hysterically while being completely serious. Zamora’s culture plays a big part in her art. “I went to Mexico City about two years ago and visited the Anthropology Museum there,” she says. “I was seeing all this history and heritage, and it was filled with color. It gave me this odd type of reassurance. I knew what I was doing because it was in my blood already. It’s the reason I am the way I am.”

Gilbert Cantu’s relationship with color wasn’t an instinctual one. He battled with it for a while. Up until two years ago, he had really never used it in a piece. Now, his oil portraits of pop culture icons burst with color, but his work didn’t always look this way. “I lived in this black and white world,” Cantu says. “I used black and white so much in my works that my teachers used to wonder if everything was okay in my personal life.” He laughs and proudly states that he isn’t afraid of color anymore. He recalls a dream that became a defining moment in both his artistic career and life. In the dream, he is attending an art show at The Art Institute of Houston, where he received his degree in graphic design. As Cantu stares at a large painting of Jesus, a man tells Cantu the painting is his own. Cantu can’t believe he painted this work with such vibrant colors jumping off the canvas. “I woke up and knew immediately that this is what I am supposed to be doing,” he says. Much like Zamora, Amanda Flores, a 37-year-old abstract painter, approaches color like a second language, allowing it to be the subject of her compositions. “When I look at things in everyday life, color is always what jumps out at me first,” she says. “It is what I notice first about everything.” She uses color for balance, placing different hues and shades in her work, hoping to make her viewers feel at ease. She’s aware that the emotions she feels while creating will show in her work. “When choosing colors, I do things that make me feel good, and in turn, I think that makes other people feel good as well.” Flores says. “I hope my art brings people happiness,” she says. “Wherever or however

they are viewing it, I just hope it makes them happy.” Jack Wood, a 28-year-old painter and woodcut printer, describes his use of color as a story of ferocious joy. While he allows the basic rules of color theory to shine through his pieces, he also combines pigments to tell a story. Working primarily with pure colors straight from the tube, Wood creates organic pieces, which represent joy for him. “The colorful skies of twilights and dawnings, they are evocative of the always lurking possibility of change,” he states. “Nothing in this world is given or constant, every moment differs from the next and I try to describe this affect with bright, undiluted colors and manic marks.” Additionally, Wood enjoys spray paint, especially the transparent varieties popularized by graffiti. “I frequently use spray paint to find my way into a painting, to suggest the general space of color.”
THE ARTIST EXPERIENCE After growing up in the small town of Tivoli, Texas and starting her formal education journey at Incarnate Word University, Zamora felt an itch she needed to scratch. She moved to Corpus Christi with her sister and enrolled at TAMUCC as an art major. She has memories of painting as early as age four and always knew she was supposed to be an artist. Today, Zamora is hard at work creating beautiful pieces in various forms. For quite some time now, her artwork has adorned large panels of the Art Center of Corpus Christi, in addition to murals on the sides of buildings, and various other places both locally and in elsewhere.

Ironically, Cantu’s interest in art was sparked when his first grade teacher told him drawing wouldn’t take him anywhere. “She said I couldn’t do it. People think art can only be a hobby and that you have to get a real job,” he says, recalling the day his teacher crumpled up his drawing of a turkey. While he focused on graphic design after school, in 2007 he began pursuing more traditional art tactics. Before making the transition to a realism painter, he primarily worked on mixed media collage. After deciding he wanted to concentrate wholly on painting, he dove deep, teaching himself all the ins and outs of paint mixing, brush types, and various methods. Now, he solely works with oil on canvas. He describes the connec-

tion he feels to the old masters. “Technology hasn’t really changed much when it comes to painting,” he says. “You still paint with a brush on a canvas—granted you don’t have to crush your own pigments anymore, but I just feel this connection to the past when I use oils.”
"Installation Detail of Pretty Color Time"
Flores bounced around several states before landing in Arkansas where she received her BA in Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting and drawing from Arkansas State University. She didn’t make her way to Corpus Christi until 2006. It wasn’t until teaching art for a while and having her first child that she decided to pursue painting full time. While Cantu has phased the concept of collaging out of his work, Flores is beginning to phase it in. Her abstract painting style combines shapes, texture, and, most importantly, color in order to create exceptionally eye- pleasing compositions. She plans to maintain her cur-

rent style and add the method of collaging into it. Each piece of paper she collages with she paints herself. “It adds this definition and depth to the piece that I just love,” she says. The ever so bold and colorful work of Keith Haring flipped a switch in Wood’s mind in seventh grade and left him captivated. “I remember being blown away, watching him so confidently writing on the subway walls in the midst of the busy New York stations. I started copying his figurative style immediately in all of my notebooks,” he says. Wood recently completed his masters at TAMUCC and is prepping for a nine-week residency at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. There he will live communally with 65 other highly skilled artists and learn from a faculty comprised of some of the most resonant voices in contemporary art.
THE ARTIST MUSE While each of the four artists view colors similarly, they each look for inspiration in different places. For Zamora, her inspiration is flooded with her culture. The heritage she is proud of comes through in her work, and she uses the label of Chicana artist as a way to represent what she identifies with and is proud of. For Cantu, inspiration comes in the form of positivity. He realizes it sounds cliché, but he is always drawn to people who are living their life in positive ways, filled with love and light. Flores finds inspiration from within. Her thoughts inspire her to create, and she often uses words in her pieces as a form of structure in order to begin a new work. As for Wood, inspiration isn’t something he necessarily believes in. He likes to think that great ideas come out of working through lots of bad ones, and the most inspiring thing you can do is just get to work.
Amanda Flores amandafloresart.com @amandafloresart
Similar to a kaleidoscope reflecting numerous shapes and colors to create a cohesive pattern, each of these artists use an abundance of color in their work to form unified compositions. Where the rest of the world sees ROYGBIV, they see analogous color schemes and certain shades of blue producing a feeling of home. They each use color in their works to not only tell us a story, but make us feel something, without us even knowing it.

Borchard Regional Fairgrounds for the Corpus Christi Comic Con. The convention is the brainchild of South Texas native Daniel Benavides, who founded it in 2016.
“I love the Corpus Christi area. I’ve lived here my entire life.” Benavides says. “One weekend, I was at a local toy and comic show with my family. I told my wife, ‘I can’t believe there hasn’t been an actual Corpus Christi Comic Con.’ And then I asked her what she thought about me starting it.” And just like so many beloved characters, he set out to do something great. As it turned out, this mere mortal’ s superpower brings superheroes to life. Benavides brought on two co-owners, John Garcia and Ryan Romel and together, along with their wives and a small staff, they put on the first comic con in 2017. Their first year saw more than 7,000 attendees. This year, they believe it will be even bigger. “It feels amazing knowing that people are now markin g their calendars. Not only those from Corpus Christi – people from all over Texas and outside Texas. It’s making a mark in the Comic Con world. I’m very proud of that,” says Benavides. As Spiderman’s Uncle Ben says, ‘with great power comes great responsibility.’ Which is why Benavides and his team are focused on excellence. “We want this to be as big as possible, but we also want to make a high-quality show that people want to go to.”

There are also several panels scheduled for the weekend. Each panel features members of a production, from actors to artists, who will be talking about their craft, how they got started, and details about their work. There will also be interviews with celebrities, voice actors, and comic book artists. “I love to see how people soak up the information,” Benavides goes on. “And they get to interact and meet their favorite celebrities and get autographs and photos. It’s a wondrous thing.” The Corpus Christi Comic Con will be a great time to break out your Sailor Moon or Iron Man costume because there will also be cosplay costume contests for kids and adults. “From anime to gaming to comics and everything else in between,” lists Benavides, “there will be everything pop culture related. We try to offer something for everyone.” There’s also a ticket package for everyone, including Saturday, Sunday, weekend, or V.I.P. passes. Follow your Spidey-senses to The Corpus Christi Comic Con at Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 23 and Sunday, June 24. Avengers Assemble! And the rest of the Coastal Bend, you should come, too!

P
eople come to The Quad Fitness Studio with different goals in mind. Whether it’s to get toned after an enormous weight loss, to get the energy to keep up with young children, or to live longer, the end result is the same. Clients say they are more fit in body, mind, and sprit as a result of doing a special and personalized training program.
The classes consist mainly of circuit training and push-ups. Ruth heard about the studio because she grew up with one of their trainers. She has some advice for those who hesitate to try a similar program. “Starting anything new is scary. I was soft with being a mom of four, and I wanted to get in shape. I keep coming back because it’s like a family,” she says. There is a large blackboard on one wall of the studio that lists the first names of all the clients. Small lines are drawn beside each name to indicate when each person has come to work out. Ruth calls it a friendly competition among the clients. “It makes everyone want to get in and try it out. It’s worth it,” she says. “That family feel is what it’s all about,” says The Quad Fitness Owner, Seth Wieland. He wants everyone to know that all fitness levels are welcome. “I’ve always wanted to help people,” says Wieland, who started out with a biomedical science degree with plans to go into pharmaceutical sales.
Ashley Ruth, the mother of four young boys ranging in age from 2 to 10 years, says she comes into the studio for classes at 5 a.m. each day. She’s been at it for about 8 months now.
But that career option didn’t appeal to him in the end. Wieland had worked as a personal trainer, and a client suggested he start his own business. The studio now has 150 members along with trainers who work for Wieland.
“I get here, and I get it done. It’s really changed my energy level, and my family has gotten interested. My husband has started doing personal training and has lost 60 pounds,” Ruth says.
“We take people through a free first introductory session, and then they can go to classes,” he says.

Marcus Lozano, a small business owner in Corpus Christi, has been coming to the studio since December as a continuation in his dramatic weight loss journey, which began in 2012. He started out weighing 315 pounds and ended up losing about 100 pounds after eating a high protein low carbohydrate diet before coming to the studio. Since December, he has lost another 20 pounds after working on an exercise regimen at The Quad.

“I’m 32 years-old and in the best shape of my whole life. I come here five days a week. When you believe in something, you aren’t afraid to share it,” Lozano says in regard to his results. Ana Olivera-Hamm, who just joined the gym two months ago, says what she liked most was that the personal trainers worked with her to see where she needed to start in her fitness journey. “They do a pre-assessment here to see what you are capable of,” the 64-year-old states. For Olivera-Hamm, coming to work out at the studio is her priority, and she sees the results. “My stamina is higher and my mood is better,” she says. “They accommodate for me, and there is never any shaming. I am empowered to do my best.” Regardless of the reasoning behind getting each client into the gym in the first place, the results are pretty much the same. The Mental Health Epidemic With a deep passion for educating and spreading awareness about mental health issues, Dr. Justin Hensley is becoming the voice for the mentally ill homeless population. By: Jacqueline Gonzalez
mental illness are invisible, thus causing frequent marginalization. The lack of sufficient behavioral health care facilities is at the root of the problem, forcing local emergency rooms to become overcrowded. The indigent population, the majority of whom are homeless and mentally ill, do not have medical insurance or the proper knowledge and wherewithal to obtain available resources such as the Nueces County Aid Card. As a result, these patients seek medical treatment in emergency rooms. According to Dr. Hensley, patients needing psychiatric care occupy 10 out of the 12 beds available in emergency rooms, which hinders the ability of medical staff to tend to other patients. Some psychiatric patients can be treated with medication, but their living situations present other obstacles to recovery, for example, stolen medication and insufficient health care maintenance. For other patients, medication is not enough; they require around the clock, inpatient care. Mentally ill patients are often placed on waiting lists or transferred to other facilities, which only increases the vicious cycle of the emergency room revolving door issue.
D
r. Justin Hensley, President of the Nueces County Medical Society, is concerned with the lack of care for patients suffering from behavioral health issues, specifically the homeless population. In a society where mental illness is stigmatized, the lack of care for behavioral health patients is widespread. On behalf of the Nueces County Medical Society, Dr. Hensley recently published a letter of concern addressing the lack of behavioral health care for the homeless. The letter addresses the problems ranging from the shortage of healthcare professionals to the scarcity of funding. Dr. Hensley states, “Mental illness, it’s got a stigma, but it’s none of these patients’ fault. They don’t choose to be mentally ill.” Because of the comic book perception of simply wishing our problems and worries away, homelessness is mistakenly judged as a choice. Too often, the signs and symptoms of

Why not just add more beds and health care professionals to alleviate some of the problem? Financial issues also contribute to the chronic problem. Dr. Hensley argues that money is frequently spent in healthcare. However, the situation becomes an uphill battle when it is treated in a reactionary manner as opposed to being addressed primarily. Ideally, a facility specifically aimed at treating behavioral health issues would be the perfect solution, but this potential solution reaches a fork in the road when the obstacles of funding and staffing ensue. Regardless of the method, if the behavioral health issues are addressed, perhaps the myriad surrounding problems will also be addressed for the betterment of Nueces County.

One of the biggest challenges Dr. Reyes, and many surgeons, face in the region is the pure volume of patients they must see. Surgeons stay very busy and are needed so often that it becomes a challenge to give the amount of care and attention they want to give each patient. “I want to have the time to sit and talk to each patient and get to know them and provide meaningful outcomes,” says Dr. Reyes. Trying to find a work/life balance is another challenge for surgeons, but he is grateful to have a wife and family who understand how important his work is. Dr. Reyes’ wife and two children are his biggest pride and joy. He tries to spend any free time with his family. Dr. Reyes is very interested in the field of robotics and believes it will play a major factor in the future of surgery. However, his primary focus is not on robotics, but helping patients with real problems one patient at a time.

Family First It is true that the history and architecture of a city are often intertwined, many times in very special ways. Think of New Orleans and its Spanish Lace balconies in the French Quarter. In each building’s architectural detail, there is an indelible mark left by the people who made the city what it is today. Over the last 70 years, the Braselton family has had the privilege to be a part of Corpus Christi’s history and architecture. Braseltons built many of the iconic buildings that make our city special, as well as thousands of homes and neighborhoods that give its residents a unique place to call home.
peaks, the Alan Samuels Chevrolet Dealership on Crosstown, and the Corpus Christi Main Post Office. My family was even at the forefront of developing Padre Island as a vacation destination, building among others, Mustang Towers and the first homes of Cinnamon Shore. As one of the city’s oldest neighborhood developers, Braseltons have built thousands of home sites across Corpus Christi, including one of Corpus Christi’s best-known master-planned communities, Rancho Vista. Braselton Homes has built new homes in the city’s best known neighborhoods, including Country Club Estates, Hewit Drive, Buckingham Estates, The Lakes, Kings Crossing, and of course, Rancho Vista.
My family’s history began in this area in 1945, when my grandfather, Guy Braselton, a West Texas carpenter, came to Corpus Christi to rebuild a children's home that was destroyed by fire. In his book, he states that when he saw Corpus Christi Bay for the first time, he proclaimed, "This is the place!" My family has been here ever since. After the children’s home was completed, my grandfather stayed, built his homes, his family, and his businesses here in our city Between my grandfather, my two uncles, my cousin, and my father, our family has had the chance to build and work on some of Corpus Christi’s landmarks, including the Corpus Christi International Airport (both times!), the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, the Texas A&M University Library, One Shoreline Plaza, and the old City Hall Building. Braseltons have also built some of the most well known high-rise residential projects, including the Cliff House Condominiums and Marina del Sol. Additionally, we also built places for our city’s visitors to stay, including the Emerald Beach Resort and the Best Western on the Bayfront. Additionally, our family has built many schools, including Mireles Elementary and several houses of worship, including Temple Beth El and many churches. Family members also built iconic retail locations like the old Gainan Chevrolet building (now Corpus Christi Electric) with its soaring concrete roof
Over the years, Braselton Homes has grown from a small custom homebuilder to a building company that has been consistently ranked as one of the largest homebuilders in the United States. We’ve won numerous local, state, and national awards. Thousands of families in the Coastal Bend have trusted the Braseltons with their new homes, and generations of Corpus Christians have lived, worked, and vacationed in our many projects. You can visit any of our most recent projects any time you so desire. Our 7 (soon 8!) fully furnished model homes, all across the Corpus Christi Bay area, are open daily. For more information and maps, please visit us at Braseltonhomes.com. I am so proud of the heritage with which I have been blessed. Three generations of my family have helped build the architecture and history of Corpus Christi. I can’t wait to see what the next generations can do!
Bart Braselton is the Executive Vice President of Braselton Homes, the Coastal Bend’s oldest and largest Homebuilder and Neighborhood Developer. Born and raised in Corpus Christi, Bart is the third generation of The Braselton family building in the Bay Area. Returning to Corpus Christi after earning a BBA in Finance, as well as a second degree in Real Estate, from the University of Texas, at Austin, Braselton began working in the family business as a construction superintendent. Since then, Braselton Homes has won numerous local, state, and national awards, including the Energy Star Leadership in Housing Award, as well as the Environments for Living Diamond Award for Energy Efficiency. And, the company has grown into one of the Nation’ s Largest Homebuilders, earning consistent rankings in the annual lists compiled by both Professional Builder, as well as Builder Magazine. Bart, a graduate of Leadership Corpus Christi Class 18, has served on numerous local community and business boards, including the Coastal Bend Green Built Initiative, Bay Area Smart Growth, and the Police Foundation. Presently, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Community Development Corporation, the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, the Builders Association and the Corpus Christi Business and Job Development Corporation. Braselton and his wife, Michelle have 2 young children at home, and are active, with Braselton Homes, in community and church organizations throughout the city, including the American Heart Association, the ECF Community Center, and the Food Bank.

ave Resendez’s beautiful home sits on the southernmost part of residential Corpus Christi in the Lago Vista neighborhood. The country feel of the backyard is juxtaposed with the light, modern and open space of the inside, with a light touch of rustic elements. “You would never recognize what the house looked like before the renovations,” Resendez says. As someone who has lived in multiple places, he can honestly say that “this is the nicest house I have ever lived in,” and he owes it all to design master, Dorsey Shedd. When asked about the house, Resendez is quick to express that the space is so beautiful and unique because of Shedd’s vision and talent.

"I GAVE HER A BUDGET AND LET HER DO HER THING, AND THE RESULTS SURPASSED ALL MY EXPECTATIONS.”
“My taste is a combination of rustic and modern,” Resendez states. Dorsey has perfectly married those two distinctive preferences in an extraordinary way. The cool tones of the living room contrast with the kitchen that features large wooden posts and a wooden dining table that Resendez says Shedd “envisioned all from a piece of wood on the side of the road.” The large kitchen, with granite countertops, multiple cabinets, and a wraparound bar flows into the dining and living areas for one open space, brought together by large floral arrangements placed throughout the area.
“Everything you see in the house was Dorsey,” Resendez says. From the architecture to the decor and everything in between, her artistic vision made the house what it is, a one-of-a-kind home. “I gave her a budget and let her do her thing, and the results surpassed all my expectations.” The house sits on a spacious lot. In front, families ride bikes and enjoy the neighborhood, while in the back the property teems with wildlife. With the King Ranch border fence right past the backyard, it is the ideal location to have the country feel and still be able to live in a neighborhood. Resendez recalls multiple times when he’s seen

deer and other wildlife that you just can’t see if you live farther into town. “It’s a really unique, quiet and enjoyable location,” remarks Resendez. “At night, you are far enough away from the city lights to see the stars and hear the sounds of wildlife just past my fence.” Having moved in this February, the house is still a new place for him. As someone who enjoys entertaining but can also be a homebody, he looks forward to opportunities to enjoy the new space and all it has to offer. The house has 5 bedrooms, 4 ½ bathrooms, and a bedroom and bathroom in the upstairs loft. There is an office in the front, and a large, window-filled room complete with a custom-built pool table in the back, overlooking the yard. The backyard features a pool and large patio area, perfect for entertaining and enjoying the natural view of King Ranch. When describing what went into the design process, Resendez said that Dorsey was able to think up a whole vision for the house that was beyond what he could have thought up on his own. “She walked through the house and immediately knew exactly what she wanted to do, and then hit the ground running.” A talent unique to artists, she was able to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary. The Resendez home itself is a piece of art created with multiple mediums by an artist with a vision that came to life.

Pop up Barbeque Portable grills to fit all your summer grilling needs By: Jo Anne Howell Photo by: Rachel Benavides

ou don’t have to have a big yard to heat things up. Portable barbeque pits are easily stored and kept tucked away for that perfect summer night. Invite your friends, fire up the grill, and you’re ready to
entertain.
Built in grills are great but having the flexibility to move the grill around is better. This allows for the ability to place yourself in the shade, or by the pool, or wherever the crowd is. Hamburgers are my favorite thing to grill and serve a hungry crowd. Plate them up and serve on a basket style tray with your favorite chips as a side. Melamine glassware, plates, and utensils are the prefect partners for outdoor entertaining. They will not break, are dishwasher safe, and, these days, come in so many styles and colors. It’s easy to be chic in the shade with melamine collections for outdoors. Thinking about grilling and chilling this summer? Find yourself a portable grill that fits your needs and fire it up!

Summer Tips for
Growing Plants in Containers
Grow beautiful container plants all summer long with these helpful tips By: Justin Butts Photo by: Rachel Benavides
P
otted plants bring beauty, color, and fragrance to outdoor living areas, but they easily become stressed during our sultry Coastal Bend summers.
Potted Plants are Sensitive to Heat and Wind The intense heat and incessant wind of summer quickly dry out container plants. In nature, the roots of plants are insulated by the ground, which heats or cools gradually. Potted plants have only a small amount of soil for insulation, which means rapid cooling or heating. These plants suffer from extreme heat as well as rapid temperature changes each day. Potted plants should be well-insulated. Choose containers with the greatest insulation, such as terra cotta, and make sure there are sufficient holes in the bottom to allow excellent drainage.
Soil is the Key to Health in Potted Plants Use only the highest quality organic potting soil. For best results, try mixing potting soil with organic compost at a 1:1 ratio. Make sure the soil goes to the bottom of the pot (not lined with rocks to save soil) so plant roots have plenty of space to grow. Leave a couple inches head space at the top of the pot for organic mulch (native leaves are best) to further insulate and protect the soil.
Provide Sufficient Direct Sunlight without Too Much Wind Plants need a certain amount of direct sunlight each day to conduct photosynthesis. Heat is not the same as light. If potted plants sit in the shade of a covered patio all day, they receive all the stress of the heat without the benefits of direct sunlight needed to grow. If possible, locate potted plants where they enjoy morning sunshine but are shaded in the afternoon when the heat is at its worst. Wind rapidly dries out container plants. Place your container plants where they receive enough sunlight each day but are shielded from wind. 78 The Bend
How Often and How Much to Water Container Plants Water your potted plants slowly and deeply to allow full saturation throughout the pot. Let the soil mostly, but not completely, dry out before the next watering. Usually, during summer, outdoor container plants need watering every morning and evening—and sometimes at mid-day! Use your finger to dig down to check soil moisture. Dry soil causes wilting and browning of the leaves. Lush plant growth indicates that good soil moisture is being maintained. Container plants bring beauty and joy to your outdoor living areas. Monitor the soil, sun, and water to keep your potted plants lush and healthy all summer long!

Angkor Wat: The Band The most ambitious crossover in history By: Carlos Cooper Photos contributed by:Angkor Wat
F
rom the mid-eighties through the mid-nineties, Corpus Christi was the unlikely hot spot for one of the most active and dedicated DIY underground music scenes in the country. From the Stardust to Galvan Ballrooms, local punks and metalheads were organizing their own shows and packing these event spaces out with hundreds of kids who were dying for a scene to call their own. One of the most influential and successful bands to emerge from this underground scene was Angkor Wat. Named after the sprawling Hindu turned Buddhist temple in Cambodia known for its unique and world-famous architecture, the band Angkor Wat would go on to trademark its own unique and arguably experimental sound. David Nuss, the drummer of the band, also known colloquially as “Bambi,” recounts the unlikely beginnings of the band. “I was 15 and

playing drums with my church band at Bayfest when these tattooed and mohawk’ed individuals walked by and conscripted me into their gang called Angkor Wat,” recalls Nuss. “Adam had moved down from Austin with a unique punk rock vision and found some worthy recruits, and as far as I could tell, helped create the first real DIY all-ages scene that Corpus had ever known.” The culture around the band and the scene in Corpus was truly unique, which Nuss attributes to the tape trading and fanzine culture that was popular at the time. The tight knit community that formed around Corpus even made it a go-to tour stop for national acts. “Bands knew 300 people would show up, and their presence would validate our scene,” says Nuss. “We could rent venues for cheap that didn’t serve alcohol, so no matter where the gig was, it was easy to get to, and a deep camaraderie was formed between bands and concertgoers of all ages.”

"ADAM HAD MOVED DOWN FROM AUSTIN WITH A UNIQUE PUNK ROCK VISION AND FOUND SOME WORTHY RECRUITS, AND AS FAR AS I COULD TELL, HELPED CREATE THE FIRST REAL DIY ALL AGES SCENE THAT CORPUS HAD EVER KNOWN.”
Richard Guerrero Jr., director and writer of “SubCCultured: The Rise of DIY Rock in Corpus” documentary tells a similar story. “A show was an event. They were so far apart that a show was a huge deal for everyone.” As far as Angkor Wat and their influence goes, Guerrero recalls their specific “crossover” sound of hardcore punk and thrash metal. “The reason the Corpus scene was so successful was that crossover was huge here at the time. It let the hardcore punk kids and the thrash metal kids coexist,” recalls Guerrero. He attributes this universal appeal to Angkor Wat helping shape and promote the scene in Corpus. Angkor Wat eventually went on to sign with Death Records, a subsidiary of Metal Blade Records, a hugely influential heavy music label through the 80s, 90s and 2000s. They toured nationally and released two albums under the label. This June, Angkor Wat is being honored with a star on the Texas Walk of Fame in the Water Street Market to recognize them for the impact they’ve had on Texas Music. She’s Sunshine and Rainbows The most coloful birthday party you ever did see
A
By: JoAnne Howell Photos by: Rachel Benavides
lex always has the best parties, and there is no denying this was a bright and colorful candy filled fun time.
This party fits Alex’s personality: fun, bright and sweet! Tons of sweets filled life-sized unicorns and pools. The guests went wild filling up bags and getting their sugar fix for the day. Lots of activities were available such as coloring pages, making candy necklaces, face painting, and dancing to the DJ’s tunes. Balloon chains filled the ceiling to make for a sunshiny day! Sunshines and rainbows filled the tables, as well as rainbow sprinkles tossed on for a little extra fun. Alex’s cake display sat on top of acrylic boxes filled with balloons and candy shaped balloons set the back drop. When her friends sang happy birthday, she blew out the candles and when the cake was cut, tons of candy and sprinkles poured out. It was a sweet surprise for the delighted birthday girl. Friends left with oversized rainbow lollipops tied with personalized ribbon. It was a sweet celebration for Alex and her friends!

T
he Water Street Sushi Room feels like home. It is meant to feel that way. For Chef Danyela Hinojosa, the chef and driving force behind this new concept, the Sushi Room is all about coming home.
Danyela launched her career at Water Street Seafood Company back in 2005 when she was a culinary student. She heard about a program Water Street Seafood offered to reimburse culinary school tuition, and she quickly joined the staff. She opened their first sushi concept in 2006 before moving to the West Coast to study the craft of sushi. Danyela worked as a sushi chef in Los Angeles, a sous chef at McCor-
mick & Schmick’s in Houston, and as general manager at Panda Express outside Seattle, WA. Each advance in her career was about pushing herself, expanding her skill set, and challenging herself to become a better chef. Then, in 2014, Danyela landed the prestigious position as head chef at the flagship Blue C Sushi in Downtown Seattle. Danyela honed her skills in one of the most dynamic and demanding markets for sushi in America. “Sushi is an unmasterable craft,” said Danyela. “There is always more to learn, a new level of perfection to attain. Sushi is the eternal striving for perfection.” That relentless drive helped Chef Danyela elbow her way to the front of some tough competition in the sushi world. That is when Richard Lomax, of Water Street Seafood Company, offered Danyela the opportunity to come home and open the new Water Street Sushi Room in Downtown Corpus Christi. The Sushi Room premiered in April to glittering reviews for the cuisine and the talented chef at the helm. “Every step I have taken in my career has led me right back here to Water Street—to a company that cares about its people and about the community,” said Danyela. “When you come dine in the Sushi Room, you are coming into our home.” We asked Chef Danyela to share one of her favorite recipes with The Bend. She prepared a Cilantro Pineapple Tuna Poke that is a masterstroke of simplicity and flavor. This dish combines the sophistication of West Coast haute cuisine with powerful South Texas flavors. Poke (pronounced POH-kay) is the newest craze in upscale restaurants. Poke is a Hawaiian dish of raw diced fish with rice served in a bowl. In this recipe, Danyela adds caramelized pineapples and her own jalapeño poke sauce to yellowfin tuna. This poke is succulent, sweet, tangy, umami, and a little spicy. Prepare this dish at home for an authentic poke experience. Or, visit Water Street Sushi Room for something interesting and different. Chef Danyela will treat you like family.

The Perfect Book Drink Tastea offers calming flavors and a cool environment By: Julieta Hernandez Photos by: Rachel Benavides
A
quiet teahouse on McArdle provides the perfect retreat from the Texas summer heat. Their signature beverage, jasmine milk tea, pairs perfectly with a book, so be sure to bring along a fun read.
“We fresh brew our jasmine tea and mix in the milk, and then make it sweet to bring out the fragrance of the jasmine,” Nhi Nguyen, manager at Tastea, explains. Royal milk tea, a similarly popular drink, also uses jasmine tea but features a creamier milk base. The combination of milk and jasmine tea makes a sweet and soothing drink that gently glides down your throat. When ordering my drink, I could not resist trying a coffee “jelly.” Jellies, similar to tapioca boba balls, add pizzazz to your drink. Tastea’s selection includes different flavored tapioca boba balls, jellies, and even popping boba that bursts in your mouth.
98 The Bend
According to Nguyen, Tastea is one of the first teahouses in Corpus that focuses on Asian coffee, fresh-fruit smoothies (ask about their avocado smoothie), and milk teas. This is why they’re able to have such a wide selection of drinks and add-ins. Tastea is always a cool, quiet place to catch up on your workload or studies. The venue features free Wi-Fi and accessible outlets in every lounge area. A selection of board games is also available, or you could bring your own. Tastea is a perfect spot to enjoy a refreshing drink and spend time with your friends.

CUISINE / THE DISH
Did you know Contrary to popular belief, the tropical, colorful dish, poke, that we all rave about actually originates from Hawaii.
Poking Fun at the Poke bar Hawaii Poke brings fresh island flavors to Corpus Christi By: Julieta Hernandez Photos: Rachel Benavides
S
ushi fans have met their match. The poke bowl, sweeping across the Coastal Bend area, is surpassing our love of seaweed wrapped fish on rice. Last spring, Fnu Herman and his team brought flavors and blends all the way from Seattle, Washington in order to open Hawaii Poke on Saratoga.
“We’re trying in Corpus, because in Corpus they don’t have poke,” Herman explains. Hawaii Poke offers build-your-own meals. You choose a base, a mix-in, protein, sauce or dressing, and toppings. I have to mention -- toppings are unlimited! Any combination of ingredients will provide a new set of flavors to explore. No two bowls are exactly alike, and that’s what’s so fun about this place. While other restaurants have poke options on their menu, Hawaii Poke offers 100% creative freedom. Bring on the edible color wheel! 104 The Bend
Following the wave of poke bars, plenty of restaurants in the Corpus Christi area have started offering poke as well. But according to Herman, Hawaii Poke’s taste is unique because of their superb sauces. It’s true! When it came time to select a sauce, I was tempted to get more than one. Hawaiians enjoy their poke with fresh, raw fish; that’s why Hawaii Poke offers a wide selection of cut fish including ahi, scallops, salmon, and tuna (my favorite). If you’re not too keen on trying raw fish, some of Hawaii Poke’s cooked options included shrimp, grilled chicken, and beef tataki. However, if you’re really feeling adventurous, try the octopus (also my favorite). “Basically, it’s all the same as the Hawaiian’s,” Herman says about the protein. “We just added the chicken and beef and the cooked shrimp.” With indoor and outdoor seating, this compact poke bar provides a casual dining experience where you can sit by the beach (well, the huge beach photo they have on their wall) with friends. You can also pair your poke creation with a ramune soda or boba tea. Complimentary infused water is also available. Contact: 5521 Saratoga Blvd suite 110 Corpus Christi, TX 78413 (361) 500-4878

Ada Wilson’s Legacy Lives A larger than life personality, Ada Wilson made a permanent mark on Corpus Christi.

Ada Wilson poses aboard the USS Constitution during its visit to Corpus Christi in February 1932.
T
he most telling moment in Ada Rogers Wilson’s life was the time she exclaimed to a Caller-Times reporter, “Honey, I’ve been unusual all my life.” From stories about her childhood musical genius to her husband’s royal lineage, Wilson was nothing if not unique.
Her uniqueness didn’t only pertain to her hobbies but also extended to her unmatched persistence. When faced with the option to sell “her island”—Mustang Island—to developers for a huge profit or to sell it to the State of Texas for less than market value, she convinced the state to buy it. She was wealthy already, but her decision to look out for the good of her city over personal gain changed our region forever. Mustang Island State Park not only protects

the unique ecosystems located there but also generates millions of dollars of economic impact each year. However, Wilson’s true passion shows through her dedication to the children served by the Ada Wilson Hospital. In 1959, the Caller-Times said, “no statistics can tell the humanitarian accomplishment of this hospital.” Her impact continues through this hospital, which merged with Driscoll Children’s Hospital in 1995. Our citizens should be forever grateful to Ada Wilson’s dedication to the long game for Corpus Christi, ensuring more for its citizens because of her selflessness.
