Grounds for Gratitude

Few things in life are as sacred to me as the morning ritual of a cup of coffee. In my house, the typical brew method is a Chemex pour-over. The act of making it is almost as good as the act of drinking it. It’s a process as much about mindfulness as it is about getting your caffeine fix. The kettle whistles, the aroma begins to fill the kitchen and with each pour into the brewer, the familiar, comforting smell trickles into the rest of the house. It’s a seemingly small task, but it sets the tone for the rest of the day.

Some of my favorite memories are housed inside coffee shops. My husband and I spent countless mornings in the early days of our relationship falling in love at Eleanor’s Coffee Bar. Friendships have been made and nurtured at Lucy’s Snackbar. Over the past eight years, I’ve logged many hours crafting this magazine while perched at local coffee spots, surrounded by the hum of espresso

machines and snippets of overheard conversations. These spaces feel like an extension of home, filled with warmth and creativity.

If gathering around a table for a meal acts as a great vehicle for cherished conversations and expressions of gratitude, then sharing a cup of coffee with someone is the more intimate prelude. Whether you take it black, with a splash of milk, sweetened with cream and sugar or one of the many iterations in between, coffee serves as a reminder to slow down, savor and be simply be present.

As the introduction to this month’s feature “Perfect Pairings” notes, nothing complements coffee quite as well as a pastry — a fact regardless of the time of day you’re indulging. Starting on page 32, you’ll find a list of over two dozen coffee shops and bakeries that know this to be true. Plus, a guide to local roasters who understand the craft of coffee and thankfully share their talents with the lot of us.

What better way to kickstart a new year than with a caffeine-fueled issue? We think so, too.

Plenty of inspiring local stories await inside — hopefully, you’re enjoying them with a sweet treat and a cup of coffee in hand. If not, we have a few ideas on where to go to get some.

POI: MARK PARSONS
COASTAL PUEBLO

Mark Parsons

Mark Parsons is drawn to the artistic details and history that shape the world around us. From earning a degree in art to finding joy in exploring architectural beauty while traveling with his wife, Parsons doesn’t just seek out beauty; he’s in awe of it and understands how it often translates to potential, contributing to the betterment of a community.

Now president of the Hall-Rialto Preservation Association, Parsons is leading efforts to restore and reopen Beeville’s historic Rialto Theatre. After attending a few fundraising events, then-president Dr. John Hester invited him to join the mission. One visit to the theatre was all it took. When Hester needed a successor, Parsons eagerly stepped up. As support and funding for the project grow, we caught up with Parsons for an update.

Kylie Cooper: Can you share what makes the Rialto Theatre a significant landmark for Beeville, and how its history influences restoration efforts?

Mark Parsons: The Rialto theater was the first of its kind in South Texas. W. C. Stephenson — who designed the courthouse, post office and some homes in Beeville — designed the theater in a classical style. After a fire in 1935, John Eberson, architect of the Majestic Theaters in Houston and San Antonio, transformed the Rialto into an Art Deco design. It is one of eight Historical Landmark Theaters in Texas. The Rialto was state of the art, with air conditioning and hearing devices for those in need, and hosted the first radio station in South Texas. It was the center of activity for Beeville where Hollywood actors came to help sell war bonds.

KC: What are the biggest challenges the board has faced in restoring the theater?

MP: Some of the biggest challenges have been the changing building codes and the requirements for the theater to be open. At one point when we were close to opening, we were told that a sprinkler system would be required to be open. Not being in the architect’s plans or budget was a setback both timewise and financially. However, with perseverance and determination, the Association has remained faithful to the revitalization of the Rialto.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

KC: How will recent funding from the Beeville Economic Improvement Corporation, along with other key grants, advance the restoration, and how can the Coastal Bend community help with support?

MP: We have received funding from foundations in Houston and Dallas from grant applications. The Historical Commission of Texas has contributed; the City of Beeville has been supportive both from government entities and citizens here and in surrounding areas. Fundraising activities are always an important part of helping to move forward. The board has contributed to helping fund the different needs of the project, even sending manpower to clean, paint and do carpentry work. Any sort of assistance in completing the theater, whether it be in donations, in-kind help or assistance in networking available resources, is always welcomed.

KC: What is the ultimate vision for the theatre once restoration is complete? Are there specific types of programming or events you hope to host?

MP: Once open, the Rialto will be a multi-cultural performing arts center for South Texas hosting all sorts of activities. We plan on having live performances, a venue for seminars and, of course, showing films — to name a few of the programming options. It will be a hub of entertainment and activity for South Texas and partner with local restaurants and other civic organizations.

KC: What will a fully operational Rialto Theatre mean for the community?

MP: The revitalization of the Rialto will help the downtown recapture the nostalgia of years gone by and reach far into the future for all to enjoy.

Shaping the Next Generation of Leaders

West Side Helping Hand’s after-school programming and resources for community youth

In a community with limited educational resources, West Side Helping Hand has been assisting low-income youth academically and interpersonally in the Coastal Bend since 2016. Through a holistic approach, the local nonprofit provides students with the skills, confidence and opportunities to succeed.

“We provide free educational and mentorship services to students Pre-K3 to 12, including tutoring, character development, goal-setting discussions, organized sports and recreational activities,” said Executive Director Cindy Davila. After school, students receive free food and tutoring followed by sports and outdoor recreational services and indoor recreational services, including art, educational games and library or computer time.

To celebrate and enhance West Side Helping Hand’s philanthropic work, the center was recently awarded the Charity League of Corpus Christi’s grant for the 2024-2025 season. “We are very fortunate to have this opportunity to heighten awareness of our mission and goals and encourage more donations and volunteer involvement. This can help us expand our impact and support the community we serve,” Davila said.

With grant funds, the center plans to enhance resources, existing programs and services, and strengthen outreach to attract more volunteers and donations. The center aims to expand its capacity by adding two buildings; developing a program for junior high and high school students to explore vocational skills and connect with postsecondary resources; and adding a volleyball court and tarp to the playground at its current location. Currently serving 104 students with a waitlist of 100, Davila expects the expansion to increase capacity to 160 students, with future growth potentially reaching 300-400 students.

West Side Helping Hand also plans to establish partnerships with other local organizations, businesses and government entities. Currently partnered with Rose Shaw Elementary, Zavala Elementary and Promessa

If interested in volunteering, contact Cindy Davila at cindy@wshhcc. org; if interested in donating, please do so at osvhub.com/ wshhcc/giving/ funds

Charter School, the center provides transportation for students from these schools and works with teachers, parents and principals to address academic challenges.

Last semester, 95% of enrolled students passed their classes with the support of West Side Helping Hand. The center also partners with Valere Public Schools, Majesty Outdoors, Gulf Coast Humane Society, Tennis Success, Grow Local South Texas, Team Nutrition USDA from Texas A&M and Coastal Bend Food Bank to help with its programming.

Through its blend of academic support, career exploration, characterbuilding programs and extracurricular activities, West Side Helping Hand is shaping the next generation of leaders. “Every child deserves a chance to succeed,” Davila said. “With the support from Charity League, we will succeed and help develop [even more] outstanding productive citizens for our future.”

A Transformative Fitness Approach for All

Low-impact exercise for long-term health at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club

As the new year begins, a common resolution many people tend to add to their list is to adopt healthier lifestyles. Before diving into the same routine, consider that low-impact workouts could be a sustainable alternative to turn that resolution into a lifestyle.

“The best thing we always say is just to move. It doesn’t matter your [experience] level or your skill set; it just matters that you move,” said Lucas Garcia, fitness manager at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club.

The hardest step is the first step — and in reality, mindset is the biggest barrier. Low-impact workouts can be beneficial to people of all ages and fitness levels, especially for those hesitant to walk into the gym and wander around intimidated by all the machines and weights. According to Garcia, low-impact workouts can be as simple as stretching, walking and even performing daily activities like gardening or cleaning. For those looking for more of a challenge, classes such as yoga, barre and Pilates are great entrances to vigorous exercise.

A common mentality people have when it comes to working out is that it has to be all or nothing. As a beginner, high-intensity workouts can feel overwhelming and leave you with a crippling soreness that provides

visit the Corpus Christi Athletic Club website.

a false sense of incapability. This results in people giving up before they reach their goals and potential. Low-impact workouts can feel manageable, thus giving you the confidence to continue incorporating exercise into your everyday routine, ultimately reaching your goal of leading a healthier lifestyle.

Garcia shared that some of the key benefits, besides long-term sustainability, are physical — such as building cardiovascular and muscular endurance, increased stamina and improved mobility. Unlike the physical demands of high-intensity workouts, low-impact workouts are gentle on the joints which minimizes the risk of injury, making them ideal for beginners, older adults or anyone recovering from injuries. Another key benefit is accessibility, since these workouts can be tailored to any fitness level or age group.

Incorporating low-impact workouts into your New Year’s resolutions is the first step to setting a manageable, realistic goal for improving your health. Unlike drastic changes that often lead to abandoned resolutions, committing to a low-impact routine encourages consistency.

Corpus Christi Athletic Club offers many options to incorporate low-impact workouts, with classes and amenities such as Pilates, yoga, barre-less, tai chi and water aerobics. Embrace low-impact movement in the new year for a healthier, balanced lifestyle that lasts.

The Old Made New

An architect’s dedication blends restoration with elevated mid-century elegance

On a peaceful stretch of the popular Lamar Park neighborhood, under the cover of sprawling oak trees, families stroll the sidewalks walking dogs while children ride bikes. This classic sense of community and family-oriented activity was just one of many reasons Nick and Sofia Gignac fell in love with the 1960s midcentury gem they call home.

Nick, whose love for architecture began in childhood and who has gone on to be a partner at his family’s firm, purchased the home in 2015 with a vision of what it could be. “A lot of people said that it just needed to be knocked down,” he said, “but I’m not a fan of knocking things down.”

The wide, low-pitched structure was in need of a heavy facelift; a challenge Nick was eager to take on. After a quick make-ready, the Gignacs moved into what would become a multi-phased labor of love and reflection of their personal style.

The original layout of the home remains intact, as Nick and Sofia felt removing walls and disrupting the flow would compromise the integrity of its history. Although

Nick entertained combining the parallel living rooms, the unique dividing wall of white brick and curved vertical wood slats was an aspect of the home’s era the Gignacs just couldn’t delete.

“We didn’t convert any rooms because everyone agreed that it was just better the way it is,” Sofia stated. “They don’t make houses like this anymore.” Interestingly, a powder bath adjacent to the entry stands distinct as a feature not typically found in early 1960s homes.

Embracing the divided living rooms allows the spaces to embody two separate aesthetics. Scandinavian-style furniture in warm whites and natural woods complements the family’s framed Beatles memorabilia, offering a sound bath of serenity in the formal living area. Sitting in wait, Nick’s guitar is positioned near a seating area of Juhl chairs while a curved boucle sofa invites guests to join in the experience. Against the far wall, the dining table and molded plywood chairs sit beneath low-hung glowing pendants to delineate the space, suggesting intimate intentionality.

The minimalist color palette enhances natural wood and decor accents, creating a serene atmosphere.

In contrast, the family room adjacent to the kitchen features cooler blue/green tones, a colorful art collection and the original built-in shelving, painted and reimagined to display mementos of Sofia’s Romanian heritage.

Adjoining the family room, the kitchen maintains the original footprint. “We kept the shape of the kitchen,” Nick said. “We took some dated upper cabinets out, but everything is in its original place.” Sea salt green and brushed nickel hardware embellish simple Shaker cabinets, accentuating a minimalist approach. The

oven and microwave are encased in the existing bricked opening.

A glimpse into the primary suite reveals more saturated tones than the remainder of the house. Nick confessed, “I like grayscale tones, but Sofia likes a lot of color, so we found a good common ground.”

In the corner of the room, an authentic Mid-century Modern end table acquired from Nick’s grandmother anchors a reading nook surrounded by symbolic Romanian plates and art from the family’s travels.

Perhaps the most transformative room, the massively remodeled primary

bath takes on a modern spa aesthetic. A wet room with a luxurious free-standing tub makes up most of the space.

“The shower used to be a closet, and the former bathtub had bright blue tile … it needed a full overhaul,” the owners said. Natural sunlight flows in through the original clerestory windows above the dual vanities, providing ideal lighting to the space.

“Our favorite part is the backyard; it’s a great place to hang out,” the Gignacs shared. It is here that their entertaining reaches maximum potential. Sun deck

platforms, lounge seating and dozens of carefully maintained plants create a resort-style desert oasis beside a long, rectangular pool. Anchoring the ends of the deck, two large planters house massive prickly pear cacti. “We thought the concrete planters were cool — we couldn’t get rid of them,” Nick said.

Remaining true to the architectural integrity, the Gignacs have maintained the minimalist lines and authentic appointments of their beloved midcentury home.

Plush loungers offer a panoramic view of the shimmering pool and lush greenery.

NOW GROWING

Blue Mistflower

Tips for growing this gorgeous bloom in the Coastal Bend

Blue mistflower is a native perennial wildflower admired for its ethereal blue blooms, which bring a soft and captivating charm to any garden. A thriving stand of blue mistflowers is a constant delight for gardeners in the Coastal Bend.

As a Texas native, blue mistflower is easy to grow and thrives in the right conditions. Found naturally near stream banks and in lush meadows with ample rainfall, these plants flourish when their natural habitat is mimicked. Enhance your garden soil with generous compost and fertilizer at planting time, and keep the area well-watered throughout summer to support healthy growth.

Blue mistflower blooms from mid-summer through late fall. Be sure to plant in full sun, as too much shade restricts flowering and plant height. If the plants become withered in the heat, add a thick layer of native leaf mulch around the base of the plants to cool the soil.

Bees of many shapes and sizes will buzz around the flowers into winter to take nectar for making their honey. Hummingbirds will also make a stop at your mistflowers on their way south in the fall.

While blue mistflower’s ability to reseed and spread may seem like a drawback, it’s often a welcome trait. Its dense, aggressive roots are excellent for choking out grass and weeds, making it an ideal medium-height ground cover. If the plant spreads to unwanted areas, it can be easily managed by digging it up with a shovel.

Blue mistflowers are also easy to propagate. Take cuttings to grow new plants or sow seeds directly into the garden. For an early start, consider planting seeds this January or growing potted plants to adorn a sunny windowsill.

GARDENER'S NOTES

GROWING UP

Spacing, 18” to 24”. Height, 24” to 36”. Full sun; too much shade will prevent blooming. Plant by transplant or seed, spacing at 18” for a dense, bushlike appearance. Requires rich, well-drained and moist soil. Add 4” of organic compost, plus 1/2 cup of pastured poultry manure and 1/2 cup of homemade wood ash per square foot. Sow seeds to a depth of 1/8” and thin to the desired final spacing. Water regularly throughout summer for optimal blooms. Mulch with native leaves.

PROFILING

Blue mistflower spreads through rhizomes and selfseeding. Its aggressive growth often chokes out or repels nearby weeds or grasses. Easy to propagate by cuttings: in spring, place a cutting in water until roots form, then plant in potting soil. Seeds can also be sown directly into a pot or garden in full sun. Makes excellent cut flowers, adding an ethereal touch to a robust bouquet. Cut flowers last 4-5 days in a vase.

FUN FACTS

Blue mistflower transplants can be found at local nurseries. It’s also easy to grow from seed in a garden or pot. The seeds are available from Native American Seed in Junction at seedsource.com. This fantastic gardening resource offers thousands of native seeds online, shipped directly to customers. If you’re passing through Junction, visit the store for classes or a tour of its stunning facilities.

Sheet Pan Meals for Every Day

Put this kitchen workhorse to good use for delicious, nutritious suppers

With a new year beginning, many seek a healthier start to 2025. We add trips to the gym and meal prep to our todo lists. We set goals to eat fewer ultra-processed foods, cut out sugar and add more veggies to each meal. With the ambitions and complications of contemporary life, a meal that is straightforward to assemble, nutritious and quick to the dinner table is a godsend. This is where the workhorse of the kitchen, the humble sheet pan, comes in.

Sheet pan suppers have a cult following for good reason. The versatility allows for endless combinations of proteins, vegetables and seasonings, making them suitable for a wide range of tastes and dietary preferences. Spreading your meal out (sides and all) on a single pan makes food prep simple and clean-up a piece of cake.

Few dishes combine easy preparation and satisfying flavors like our sheet pan sesame salmon. We encrust protein-rich salmon in sesame seeds for a nutty finish. Colorful winter vegetables nestle around the salmon, providing sides packed with tummy-filling fiber. The dish comes together with a gingery garlic sauce that’s salty and sweet with a spicy kick that can be used for drizzling or dipping.

Enjoy the flavors of Greece with a no-fuss flatbread. We added traditional Mediterranean flavors like feta, kalamata olives and oregano. The phyllo dough base crisps up in a cinch and cooks evenly on a sheet pan. One could also easily substitute a gluten-free cauliflower crust and add fresh spinach, arugula or fresh veggies for a nutrient boost. Substitute gruyere or mozzarella between the phyllo layers to add a satisfying cheese pull.

If you’re searching for uncomplicated meals with more flavor and fewer dishes, look no further than these sheet pan suppers. With their convenience and ease, they are an excellent solution for anyone looking to simplify their cooking routine while enjoying delicious, wellbalanced meals. The best part: spending more time enjoying your meal with your family and less energy in the kitchen.

Brewing with Excitement

The latest from the local craft brewery scene

With established breweries like Lazy Beach Brewing, Rebel Toad and Nueces Brewing serving the Coastal Bend for years, along with newer additions such as Beach Ball Brewing and Casa Blanca Brewing Co., our area is expanding its market. This growth brings fresh vibes, new brews and a developing sense of community.

At Beach Ball Brewing, it all started with a love for beer creation. Brewmaster Bobby Ball leads with a passion for unique beers focused on creating a “community brewery.”

“We view the current local brewery scene to be wide open, with lots of opportunity for growth in creating unique-tasting beers you will tell your friends about,” said Ball.

Beach Ball Brewing’s menu includes interesting offerings like its inhouse frozen hard seltzers and popular brews such as the Balltoberfest German-style Märzen. By the numbers, the Balltoberfest is proving to be a fan favorite. Despite being new to the craft beer scene, Beach Ball’s journey is marked by resilience and resourcefulness.

“We tackled the challenge of launching without borrowing money by buying equipment as we could afford it,” Ball said. Looking ahead, he dreams of expanding to a taproom on Padre Island where patrons can enjoy Beach Ball’s brews dockside.

Casa Blanca Brewing Co., a microbrewery named after a historic bar that operated for nearly a century in San Diego, Texas, has found a home in a converted dry cleaner’s building on Hancock Avenue. Opened last September by owner Baltazar Ramirez, the cozy space accommodates 25 to 30 guests and specializes in American and Mexican lagers. Among the offerings, the “Lazy Hazy IPA” has quickly become a crowd favorite. Ramirez, deeply passionate about brewing, aims to share his craft with patrons by offering a transparent glimpse into the brewing process.

A few miles away, Nueces Brewing brings a different energy — part barbecue pit, part beer hall, part community epicenter started by Cale Moore and Brandon Harper. Moore's passion for beer became a business opportunity for the two after he relocated to Corpus Christi in 2016. Now, Nueces Brewing is stepping onto a bigger stage: the Corpus Christi International Airport (CCIA).

From left to right: Beach Ball Brewing, Robert Pruski, owner & CFO, Kelly Ann, "brewtender" & manager and Bobby Ball, owner & brewmaster

“There was an initiative to feature local businesses in the airport, and of course, we were happy to join forces,” Moore said of the recent partnership. Thanks to support from CCIA, the City of Corpus Christi and food and beverage provider Tailwinds, Nueces Brewing’s addition enhances the experience in the terminal. Visitors can now enjoy a hassle-free airport atmosphere paired with local flavor, highlighted by the brewery’s standout Supremo Lager.

With Beach Ball Brewing’s plans for a dockside taproom on Padre Island and Nueces Brewing’s upcoming events like Picklefest in March, these breweries are proof that Corpus Christi’s craft beer scene is as dynamic and welcoming as the beloved city itself. These breweries aren’t just places to drink — they’re representations of our city. They’re gritty, unpretentious and full of heart. When you sit down with a beer in Corpus Christi, you’re not just tasting hops and malt; you’re tasting the passion of the people who made it.

Italian Favorites with a Twist

Roamin’ Italy redefines food truck fare with fresh, handcrafted offerings

Roamin’ Italy has been delighting food lovers in Corpus Christi and beyond for nearly three years with its imaginative take on Italian cuisine. Chef Chris and his partner Denise have crafted a food truck experience that is as much about creativity and quality as it is about convenience.

The path Chris took to launching Roamin’ Italy was anything but typical. He spent years working in Italian restaurants, where he developed a passion for the cuisine and honed his culinary skills, but despite his love for the kitchen, life took him in a different direction, leading to a 16-year career in the medical field. When the pandemic brought an unexpected layoff, Chris saw it as the perfect moment to return to his culinary roots. “I knew the time was right,” he said. Determined to finally pursue his dream, he sold a piece of land and invested in creating a food experience unlike any other.

Initially envisioning a fast-casual concept where customers could customize their pasta dishes — much like building a sandwich at a deli — he eventually evolved the idea into a mobile kitchen serving their creative culinary offerings. Denise, the friendly face of the truck and mastermind behind its social media, helps bring the vision to life. Together, they offer menu items that are inventive, fresh and packed with flavor.

Roamin’ Italy stands out with dishes you won’t find at other food trucks. Its signature creation, pasta served in a buttery garlic pizza cone, combines flatbread grilled to perfection with your choice of pasta and fillings. Another standout is the pizzini, a hybrid between a pizza and a panini, born from ingenuity after Chris realized a full pizza setup wasn’t feasible in the truck.

Follow Roamin’ Italy on Facebook and Instagram to know where it’s popping up next.

For traditionalists, the handmade spaghetti and meatballs — featuring marinara simmered for 16 hours and handbreaded meatballs — is a must-try. Other crowd-pleasers include chicken alfredo, toasted ravioli and creative specials like “ciaochos,” a playful spin on nachos using crostini, mozzarella, meatballs, alfredo sauce and olive tapenade.

True to its name, Roamin’ Italy doesn’t stay in just one spot. From breweries and ArtWalk to apartment complexes, the food truck’s schedule changes constantly, bringing its restaurant-quality dishes to diverse crowds. “We enjoy the variety — it gets us in front of so many different people,” Chris said.

Whether you’re savoring spaghetti from a cone or indulging in a pizzini, Roamin’ Italy proves that creativity and passion set it apart. “There’s not a bad item on the truck,” Chris promised. So next time you spot the Roamin’ Italy food truck, give it a try — you’re in for an unforgettable culinary adventure.

Top Doctors 2025 +

Summary. DataJoe Research is a software and research company specializing in data collection and verification, and conducts various nominations across the United States on behalf of publishers. To create the "top doctors" list, DataJoe Research facilitated an online peer-nomination process, also referencing government sources. In addition, DataJoe often conducts media analysis through Internet research to factor in public perception. DataJoe then tallied the nominations per category for each doctor to isolate the top nominees in each category. After collecting nominations and factoring additional information from the media analysis, DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had a current, active license status with the state regulatory board. If we

were not able to find evidence of a doctor's current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that doctor was excluded from the list. In addition, any doctor who has been disciplined, up to the time-frame of our review process for an infraction by the state regulatory board, was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied result to the magazine staff for final review and adjustments. Final note. We recognize that there are many good doctors who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the region. Inclusion in the list is based on the opinions of responding doctors in the region and the results of our research campaign. We take time and energy to ensure fair voting, although we u derstand

that the results of this survey nomination are not an objective metric. We certainly do not discount the fact that many, many good and effective doctors may not appear on the list. Disclaimers. Lloyd Stegemann, MD, FASMBS

BARIATRIC SURGERY

Dr. Lloyd Stegemann was born to be a doctor. Born in Texas, but raised in a small, Midwest town, Dr. Stegemann says “I just always knew I wanted to be a doctor and I have no idea why. I just knew.” His family moved to Corpus Christi in 1985 where he attended Carroll High School. It was during his surgical residency he found his true passion in medicine: bariatric surgery. “The first time I saw a bariatric operation I was hooked! I knew that’s what I wanted to dedicate my career too.”

Now 20 years and over 4000 bariatric operations later, he continues to feel just as passionate about bariatric surgery today. “It truly still amazes me every time I am in clinic. Seeing patients regain their life and health is why I went into medicine. And I get to help them do it! It’s a great feeling.”

Dr. Stegemann established The Better Weigh Center in 2012 which offers medical and surgical weight loss plans to help individuals struggling with weight. “We have a number of different options for anyone that wants to get their weight under control” says Dr. Stegemann “From nutrition and lifestyle counseling to weight loss medications and bariatric surgery, we offer it all. We work with individuals to help them create a plan that is affordable, manageable and sustainable.”

Dr. Stegemann opened Better Way Wellness in 2023 which offers hormone replacement, peptide therapy and IV fluid therapy. “This has been a great addition to our weight management services as hormones and weight go hand-in-hand,” stated Dr. Stegemann “And the peptides and IV fluid therapies can help return the vitality we all are looking for.

The Smithsonian Arrives in Rockport

A traveling exhibition exploring the ‘Crossroads’ of rural life

Crossroads: Change in Rural America, an installment of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, began its journey through small towns across the country in the summer of 2018. With support from the Texas Historical Commission and the combined efforts of 20 local and regional heritage groups, the exhibition arrives in Rockport on Jan. 25.

The Crossroads display features interactive panels corresponding to rural life pillars: land, community, persistence, identity and change. For the cross-country tour, state humanities councils selected host cities whose proposals imbued the Smithsonian’s structure with local history and culture.

After beginning its 2024-25 Texas tenure in the piney woods of San Augustine, Crossroads visited the Central Texas towns of Clifton and Brenham before landing in Rockport for the new year. From there, the exhibit will travel to Buffalo Gap near Abilene, then San Elizario outside El Paso and finish its Texas run in the Hill Country’s Bandera.

Rockport’s interpretation of Crossroads involves casting a wide net across the entire coastal region of South Texas. “We feel like the Smithsonian has a lot of clout, and people are going to want to come just because it’s a Smithsonian production,” said Pam Stranahan with the History Center for Aransas County, one of the regional history groups that formed the exhibit committee. “Once people come here, we will send them out to see these other sites.”

Organizations from across the Coastal Bend will host weekly programs in Rockport, and 19 of the groups will occupy display space surrounding the main exhibit. The satellite displays at off-site locations

include Fulton Mansion and ticketed bus excursions to the Blackland Museum in Taft.

According to Jennifer Day with the Rockport Cultural Arts District, the core exhibit opens at 10 a.m. on Jan. 25 with a Vietnamese Cultural Festival that doubles as a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the brand-new Aransas County Community Center.

The fully staffed exhibit will be open seven days a week for six weeks, so the community spirit extends to a call for volunteers — locals and winter Texans alike.

It’s no surprise that Rockport, with its bustling art scene and quaint, coastal, small-town charm, was a destination for an exhibition of this kind. Visit Crossroads daily Jan. 25-Mar. 9 at the Aransas County Community Center.

Coastal Pueblo

Watsonia estate is an architectural masterpiece on Ocean Drive

Homes built along Ocean Drive often have their unique personalities, but this one has caused a lot of double-takes by passersby. A South Texas Spanish Revival-styled home wasn’t unusual for architect William Doty Van Siclen, but bringing pueblo-influenced design to Corpus Christi was a surefire way to draw attention.

Dubbed Watsonia, the home was built in 1938 by Harry H. Watson and his wife May, who was the daughter of Mathis namesake Thomas Henry Mathis. Mrs. Watson worked with Van Siclen to design her home — perhaps the reason it doesn’t subscribe completely to any one architectural style.

The 55,000 20-pound bricks were made onsite and baked on a fire of Texas ebony and mesquite wood, but

its unique exterior is only part of the allure of this home. Mrs. Watson decorated the interior with items from their travels — rocks, minerals, ores, coins and other fascinating items on display. Her studio was her refuge for creating watercolor and oil paintings, a passion she studied for decades. She was noted for her skills as a hostess and shared her home not only with visitors but also on film, as it was featured in a Universal Newsreel distributed widely in 1944.

Mr. Watson lived in the home less than a decade before his death, but Mrs. Watson lived her life there until 1966, enjoying a view of her treasures and the Corpus Christi Bay.
