The Art of Entertaining

There is something undeniably special about welcoming loved ones into your home. Game nights, birthday parties or an elaborate charcuterie board prepared just for our friends to come over for the latest episode of “The Bachelor” — I’ll take any excuse to host. My husband and I even throw our annual holiday party Christmas evening to extend the day’s feeling of love and togetherness for as long as possible.

Though plenty of things come together to create the perfect gathering — the menu, ambiance, guest list and all the small details in between — at the end of the day, being surrounded by those most important to you is the crux of a successful party.

But, when you want to impress your guests or simply take things up a notch, it never hurts to look to the experts. That’s why we called in a few of our “hostess with the mostest” friends to offer practical guidance and visual inspiration for your next soirée.

Starting on page 36, “Entertaining Excellence” explores a few key elements to getting it just right. Lifelong host and owner of Wildflowers Terrie Moore shares the dos and don’ts of entertaining, from both the host and guest perspective. Naturally, that takes us to a list of ideas for locally purchased hostess gifts. Event planning and styling extraordinaire JoAnne Howell of Oh Goodie Designs + Events brings your springtime table setting Pinterest board to life with an enchanting and maximal setting. And the owner of Wild Veggie Bouquet, Iuliia Prokhorova, provides tips for creating the perfect floral centerpiece — along with making your stems last longer than just the party’s duration. The feature wraps with a list of local food and drink vendors ready to help bring your event to life so you can focus on what really matters: enjoying the company.

Plus, on page 66, resident recipe developer Kayla Butts shares ideas for a tasty appetizer and cocktail perfect for this season’s gatherings. Her selections are easy to prepare and ready to elevate your menu.

As for my personal entertaining advice? Two things. First, music is a must. Curate a playlist for the evening or, if you have a vinyl setup, set out a selection of records for your guests to choose from, creating an activity. Second, when gathered around the table for a meal, present a thoughtful conversation prompt: My favorite is having everyone share their week’s peaks and valleys. Beyond that, I’ll leave the rest to the professionals in this issue.

THREE HIGHLIGHTS

As a Corpus Christi native, I’ve always been enamored with Ronnie “Pointy Boots” Mathis. I’m thrilled not only to have learned more about his story, but to share it with readers this month. Pg. 14

THE ART OF FIKA

Our team simply cannot get enough of the new local bakery, Fika. My personal favorites include a twist with goat cheese, caramelized onions and sundried tomatoes when looking for something savory, and the kouign amann when craving something sweet. Pg. 72

CLAY CONNECTIONS

It’s encouraging to see new activity and growth happening in the Six Point area, and with the recent addition of Barry Brown Clay Studio’s first stand-alone space, I am excited to see how the historic part of town begins to fill more of its vacant spaces. Pg. 76

Ronnie Mathis stays dressed to impress

The Legend of Pointy Boots

Various pieces of iconography immediately come to mind when thinking about Corpus Christi: Whataburger’s orange and white stripes; Selena’s iconic bedazzled outfits; palm trees and waves; and Ronnie “Pointy Boots” Mathis.

If you haven’t heard the name, you’ve most certainly seen the man. Dressed to the nines at all times, Mathis dons a bright-colored suit, pointy boots that extend about a foot into the air and the biggest cowboy hat you’ve ever seen. With his suit closet containing yellow, red, blue, purple and white versions of the recognizable ensemble, Mathis goes the extra mile by customizing each piece — from the bedazzled belt buckles to rhinestone-lined boots, he does it all himself.

“Before an event, he spends hours ironing his suits, making sure his jewelry is clean,” shared Mike Barnes, Mathis’ friend-turnedmanager. “Everything has to be perfect.”

Barnes met Mathis out in the community over eight years ago. Barnes, a fellow veteran who builds and fixes electric cars and bikes, saw the local legend on his then-manual bike and instantly knew he could help elevate the overall Pointy Boots production. He built Mathis an electric bike from the ground up, and has since played an integral role in helping Mathis market himself for event appearances.

“I’ll do whatever I can to help him keep going,” Barnes lovingly said about his friend. “He’s an icon in this community. If he stopped, people would ask, ‘Where’s Ronnie?’”

But how did it all start? How did Mathis become synonymous with the phrase “pointy boots?” His unique persona began

as a way to bring joy to others and distance himself from past struggles, including a history with drugs and alcohol, which he overcame more than 25 years ago.

Wanting to stand out and connect with people, he began crafting the eye-catching looks. His appearances at community events, often done free of charge, quickly made him a recognizable figure throughout Corpus Christi. Mathis credits his mother, who is 102 years old, for instilling in him a sense of style and the importance of taking pride in the ensembles you put together.

“He’s a showstopper,” Barnes said of Mathis. “People wave and honk at him when he’s riding his bike. It takes a while to get anywhere because he has to stop and talk to everyone.”

Recently, Mathis was honored through life-like portraits painted by local artist Alison Schuchs, who depicts Mathis as seen in pictures taken by Shoocha Photography Studios. The paintings act as a memorialization of Mathis’ beloved spirit. In partnership with the Art Museum of South Texas, a special unveiling of the portraits took place in December 2024 and the works are now on display and for sale at K Space Contemporary and Nueces Brewing & Barbecuing. A portion of the proceeds from the paintings will go directly to Mathis.

“There’s only one Ronnie,” Barnes said. “Other people could try to duplicate him, but nobody talks to people like he does. He’s the life of the party but he also listens and inspires. He works so hard because he loves what he does.”

There is truly no one else like Ronnie “Pointy Boots” Mathis, and his influence goes far beyond impressing crowds with his fashion. At the heart of Mathis’ mission lies a deep desire to connect with the people he loves; the city he loves.

New Horizons for Habitat

Housing nonprofit welcomes new executive director

Over the past four decades, Habitat for Humanity Corpus Christi has given more than 60 houses to people in need of affordable housing due to rising costs, natural disasters and impoverishment. Its mission is accomplished with programs such as the Habitat Homeowner — a collaboratively built home with an affordable mortgage for the homeowner — Habitat Home Repairs, which assists with home appliance repairs, and a retail outlet with gently used household items for resale at affordable prices called Habitat ReStore.

Habitat Corpus welcomed its new executive director, retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Steven Pierce, to the team toward the end of 2024. Pierce, a Purple Heart Recipient, is a natural leader passionate about serving others. After 26 years in the army, Pierce developed a mission-focused mentality, prompting him to set forth to uphold Habitat Corpus’ mission while achieving new goals in the process.

“The army is service-focused, mission-focused,” Pierce shared. “Every unit has its own specific mission that’s given, and I’ve operated like that for the past 26 years: You tell me what you need to get done and I’ll come in and complete the mission.”

Although adversity was always present in his life — having been raised in a low-income household and losing his parents to cancer at

To volunteer, a form is available to fill out on Habitat Corpus’ website.

age 15 — Pierce became the first person in his family to graduate college, and today, he serves as an example for his five children.

“It was a change of environment that really gave me hope,” he said of how he overcame life’s obstacles to achieve his goals. “That is why Habitat for Humanity is important for people who live in impoverished housing. It’s hard to break free from that, and sometimes getting an opportunity to own a home makes all the difference in the world because parents who are homeowners are more likely to have kids that are homeowners. We’re helping a family in [a specific] time and space, but we’re giving them an opportunity for generational change.”

The idea for Habitat for Humanity began with farmer and theologian Clarence Jordan, who developed the concept of working alongside people to build homes with no-interest loans from supporters and fundraising.

“We’re gonna build in a way that we’re putting people in a community of other Habitat families who all have the same challenges and the same dreams and put in the same effort to live there,” Pierce said.

Habitat helps more than 1,400 communities in the United States; and in Corpus Christi, through volunteer action, the organization continues acquiring lots to build affordable housing for families looking for a livable space to build brighter futures.

As the new leader at the helm, Pierce brings a fresh perspective and a vision that aligns with Habitat for Humanity’s foundational values of providing families with the resources to achieve stable housing and build thriving communities.

Local honey maker and naturopath on the benefits of buying close to the hive

The earliest human uses of honey date back over 10,000 years to the ancient civilizations of modern-day Spain and India. While medicinal methods differ across cultures and time, the areas treated share commonalities, from sore throats to cough suppression. Among some of the numerous benefits of natural, unpasteurized honey are its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic properties.

“Honey as a natural remedy has been part of every herbalist and homemaker’s medicine cabinet for literally millennia,” explained Dr. LaDonna Rocha, a naturopath and Doctor of Natural Medicine. “Thanks to advances in science, we understand better why it has been such an effective staple. Honey contains enzymes, antioxidants and antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help the body fight off invaders and support wound healing.”

Modern medicine has also found honey to be an effective dressing for wounds and burns as well as combatting threatening bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus, due to its natural ability to produce hydrogen peroxide. On the other hand, virtually all benefits of natural honey are completely lost in the heating process of producing most store-bought honey, reducing it to the role of a sugar-dense sweetener. This is where the magic of local honey comes in.

Operating in the Coastal Bend since 2023, Hebert Honey is a familyfounded honey operation that began in 1990 with one hive in Danielson, Connecticut. Passed down from founder David Hebert to his son David Hebert III and grandson Patrick, the independently owned operation has worked with dedication to carry on ideals and recipes for natural, ethically made honey.

“Local honey can help control allergies naturally through pollen exposure,” Patrick Hebert said about the numerous gains of buying closer to the hive. Studies have shown local honey can contain hundreds of types of microbes and pollen that can support building immunity to the pollen and other allergens native to the region where the honey is produced.

By virtue of a location’s unique attributes, each region where honey is made has its own special biological recipe. “Other reasons local is best [are] because typically you are getting a unique flavor from your own floral region, usually supporting a local business and also helping to support your local pollination,” Hebert said.

Hebert Honey focuses on producing raw, local Texas honey as well as 100% natural products like organic handmade moisturizing, healing creams and beeswax lip balm.

Those looking to shop small and support local honey makers would be remiss not to look into the myriad benefits raw, natural honey provides

consumers. The thousands of years of treatments and traditions could scarcely be covered across a single page.

Holistic medicine practitioners like Dr. Rocha advise shoppers to buy as close to the hive as they can to reap the full supplemental rewards, and to ask consciously about where the honey is sourced. Anyone looking to add a little holistic magic to their personal biome can look no further than adding a spoonful to their favorite yogurt, fresh bread, teas and more.

THE ESSENTIALS

LE VOLUME DE CHANEL

Chanel / Dillard's

Some mascaras hit a sweet spot a couple of weeks into use. You know, when it’s just tacky enough to begin to build and layer? Not Le Volume De Chanel. This tried-and-true favorite begins where other mascaras peak several uses later. The formula is buildable and gives perfectly defined and full lashes, without compromise, or simply put, without clumps. The wand, with a combination of long and short bristles, easily achieves precision and volume. Shade 80, Écorces, which translates to “bark,” is my favorite. It is subtle but effortlessly chic.

YERBA MATE WAKE UP EYE GEL

Good Molecules / Ulta Beauty

I’ve been an avid drinker of yerba mate tea for some time, so when I came across the ingredient in the form of an eye gel, I was immediately curious. Yerba mate is rich in caffeine, which brightens and reduces puffiness of the under-eye area by stimulating circulation. Good Molecules Yerba Mate Wake Up Eye Gel also hydrates with three different forms of hyaluronic acid. After I have washed my face, I dab and pat a small amount underneath my eyes in the morning. I like to give it a few minutes to dry before makeup application. It is gentle, yet effective, and at $6, an absolute steal.

Renewed, Rejuvenated and Dialed In

Springing forward well-rested and beautiful with tried, true and new products

As an avid beauty and wellness product consumer, I get really excited when I discover something new. A yerba mate eye gel that combats under-eye puffiness … and is under $10? Swoon.

However, let that not misrepresent that I am loyal to some iconic brands. And there is a mascara that, for years now, I always come back to: Le Volume de Chanel. The juxtaposition of a $6 eye gel beneath a $40 mascara isn’t lost on me. This is the paramount flex of a beauty junkie, though.

With another time change upon us and flu season not quite in the rearview mirror for many, good rest and remedies are crucial, which is why I’ve included two of my favorite wellness essentials this month. One I can promise will help you achieve deeper sleep and the other is my go-to for combatting flu symptoms. I travel with these products, give them as gifts and highly recommend you check them out.

And with spring in mind, I conclude with a product that puts a spring in my step. In fact, I won’t play a tennis match or do a public speaking engagement without it. If you can appreciate a drink that improves cognition and energy and reduces stress, you will certainly enjoy finding out more about Magic Mind below.

of time it takes to fall asleep and increases the duration of sleep. Applying magnesium at night has changed my sleep game. Two years ago, I brought magnesium oil to a holiday favorites party. Heads up: It can be a little tingly to the skin if you are deficient in magnesium, but as you continue to use it, that sensation goes away.

OSCILLOCOCCINUM

BOIRON / Natural Grocers

When our twins came down with the flu in January, Oscillococcinum (pronounced o-sill-o-cox-see-num) was the first medicine I reached for. It is a medicine cabinet staple for our family year-round. In the form of tiny sprinkles that melt under your tongue, it is easy for everyone 2 years and older to take. When taken at the first sign of symptoms, Oscillococcinum is a proven, natural way to reduce the duration and severity of flu symptoms. It is non-drowsy and has no known drug interactions.

Magic Mind Mental Performance Elixir

To be frank, focus, energy and less stress are significant priorities for me to cultivate good mental health in my everyday life. Magic Mind is easily a daily contribution I look forward to drinking, as it provides the ingredients essential to acquire better cognition, energy and reduced stress. Ingredients such as lion’s mane, rhodiola, ceremonial matcha, l-theanine and ashwagandha come together in one subtly sweet mental performance elixir. If you have activities requiring you to be calm while staying alert, you ought to give this powerful little drink a try. You’ll soon get to know my motto; more fuel, less drain. Cheers! An Artist’s Happy Place

A restful sanctuary filled with subtle color and raw elements inspires creativity and joie de vivre

What does home mean to you? It’s obviously a subjective question, but to local contemporary artist Karen Dellinger and her husband Jamie, home is a place where you can be most relaxed and at one with your surroundings. This concept is paramount when it comes to the look and feel of their single-story, bayside bungalow.

“My home is my happy place. It’s full of peace and calmness,” Dellinger beamed. Stepping through the front door, that sense of serenity is perfectly captured in the neutral color scheme appointed with natural textures and collected, hand-made and vintage décor.

“In remodeling, it was important to make my design selections timeless; nothing trendy,” she said, pressing the notion that the elements filling her home are full of character and meaning. Backstories come to life in a sculpted bust atop the living room sofa table acquired

after much deliberation, or the polished copper pots and pans inherited from her father, whose sense of hospitality was unrivaled.

“My home is filled with hand-made art; I can feel the love poured into each piece,” Dellinger mused. These unique items, flawlessly appointing the quiet color palette and furnishings, reflect cultured travels, personality and a lifelong passion for the arts.

The Dellingers knew their dream home needed to be a place that inspired comfort, which meant prioritizing an open layout to accommodate numerous guests, “Jamie and I love to entertain,” she said. “Our home is perfect to host one or even 30 guests comfortably.”

During the renovation, a wall dividing the living room from the kitchen was replaced with a faux, handpainted wooden beam, creating the open, seamless flow they desired. Working with the bones of the original

a stone-clad X-base dining table, two massive canvases span the full wall. The twin pieces, painted in place by Karen, reflect the peaceful and refined environment.

Original oak cabinetry has been gray washed to add a more contemporary feel to the open kitchen, with accenting custom millwork doors below a generous farmhouse sink. During the renovation, Karen insisted on an oversized kitchen island, resulting in a custom-built, single-slab countertop, perfect for any party the Dellingers host.

The foyer boasts a soft, eye-catching metallic wall glaze, hand-painted by Karen Dellinger, giving guests a taste of the artistry to come.

split-layout, they capitalized on a second primary suite to reinforce their love for hosting. With a flick of the hallway door, guests enter a domain uniquely their own to relax and unwind in privacy.

From ZZ plants known to flourish indoors to statuesque orchids, verdant greenery is spread through each space, emphasizing the fresh and soothing ambiance. “I always have live plants and fresh flowers in my home,” Dellinger said. “They give me the peaceful energy I crave.”

Steps from the main house lies a true surprise: A recently constructed free-standing art studio has been carefully incorporated into the backyard landscaping. As a practicing artist, Dellinger thrives in the uncomplicated, yet expedient space where she creates stunning canvases she adds to many of the rooms.

“My favorite room is my art studio,” she gushed. “I can totally immerse myself in my art and let my creative energy flow.”

A blank canvas is an opportunity, full of potential in skilled hands. In the Dellingers’ home, soft hues set the stage for florae and collected accessories to truly embrace the artistic joy that flows throughout.

The satellite art studio, with its white walls, shiplap ceiling and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, provides the perfect calm to channel creativity. Whether immersed in inspiration or hosting guests, the kitchenette and en suite bathroom run double duty.
The once traditional brick fireplace was reimagined into a hand-applied Venetian plaster veneer monolith with ambient floor lighting to highlight its beauty.

NOW GROWING

Tomatoes

The best varieties for your Coastal Bend garden

To achieve the highest yield of quality tomatoes from your garden, plant as early in March as possible. The Coastal Bend offers a brief growing season from March through June, after which heat and pests typically halt production.

To make the most of this short window, select varieties that mature quickly, such as Early Girl, as well as types that can withstand summer heat, like Cherry or Juliette tomatoes. Smaller varieties, such as Cherry or Grape, are generally easier to grow.

While numerous excellent varieties are available, the hybrids mentioned below are time-tested favorites. Growing heirlooms in the Coastal Bend is possible, but challenging, as they typically yield far less than hybrids and are highly susceptible to pests and disease. For heirloom varieties, visit Rare Seeds’ website, rareseeds.com.

TOP TOMATO VARIETIES FOR THE COASTAL BEND

Early Girl (50 days to harvest): Quick to mature with medium-sized, uniform fruits. Meaty with a rich flavor and tender skin.

Any Cherry Variety (55 days): Fast-maturing and prolific, continuing to produce in the summer heat. Bursting with flavor.

Celebrity (75 days): Slower to harvest but heattolerant. Produces uniform, meaty tomatoes great for slicing, with 20-30 fruits per plant in good soil.

Juliette (60 days): A Roma-grape hybrid that matures early and thrives well into summer. Prolific, pest-resistant, with slightly tough skin. Exceptional flavor, making it ideal for pasta sauce.

For container gardening, opt for bush or determinate varieties like Heatmaster or Better Bush. Use a tomato cage for support and enjoy a modest, yet rewarding, harvest.

GARDENER'S NOTES

GROWING UP

Spacing, 3’. Height, 5’ to 9’ vines. Full sun is essential, and the soil must be extremely rich and well-drained. For each plant, mix in 6” of organic compost, four cups of pastured poultry manure and two cups of homemade wood ash. Water the soil at the base of the plants, not the leaves. When the first flowers appear, side dress with two cups of poultry manure. Apply up to 12” of native leaf mulch to keep the soil cool and moist, helping to extend the season.

PROFILING

Tomatoes grow in three stages: first low on the vines, then in the middle, then high on the vines. For the best flavor, harvest when the tomato turns red and just begins to soften. Don’t wait too long, as pests — especially leaf-footed bugs — attack ripe tomatoes. Pinch these pests at night with a headlamp before they get out of control. Spray tomato vines weekly with Garrett Juice to boost plant health, repel pests and increase yields.

FUN FACTS

Each of the tiny hairs down the stem of a tomato is a potential root; these hairs can grow into an extensive root system beneath the soil. Plant tomato transplants two-thirds of the way into the ground — this allows the hairs to form additional roots. The more vigorous the root system, the more prolific the tomato plant will be. Use a strong trellis to support the heavy vine weight, like a cattle panel zip-tied to metal T-posts.

Spring is here!

Golden Rules

The owner of Wildflowers and lifelong hostess goes over helpful tips and the dos and don'ts of entertaining, whether you're a guest or hosting the event yourself.

I’ve been hosting parties for as long as I can remember. By 26, I had cooked a full Thanksgiving dinner — not because I loved cooking or was particularly skilled at it, but because I enjoyed setting a beautiful table and curating the guest list. Over the years, I’ve taken mental notes on what makes a gathering successful and what can turn it into a challenge. While stunning decorations add to the ambiance, they aren’t the defining factor. The true essence of a great event lies in consideration, respect and engagement. Whether you’re hosting or attending, here are my top tips for creating or enjoying a memorable soirée.

If You're Hosting

Attention to Detail: Hit all the senses! In the evening, dim the lights for a cozy ambiance; during the day, let natural light pour in. Set the mood with scented candles and upbeat music. I find the easiest way to make a decor statement is to literally go big with at least one element and stick to a simple color palette.

Gracious Hospitality: Welcome each guest at the door when possible. I love handing them their first drink before directing them to the bar for self-service. Have appetizers ready or serve food promptly. Whether you’re cooking, catering or ordering takeout, don’t get stuck in the kitchen — be present and enjoy your guests.

Introduce and Engage: While it’s always fun to get the old gang together, add a new couple or group of friends to your guest list. Make introductions and bring people together by engaging guests and ensuring everyone feels included. We all have that one friend who brings up the energy in a room — always invite them.

Flexibility and Calmness: I like to think of a swan gliding across the water — graceful and composed on the surface, while working like crazy beneath. The key is to keep the effort hidden and let the grace shine through.

Gratitude and Appreciation: Time is one of life’s greatest gifts and your guests have chosen to spend theirs with you. Let them know how much you appreciate their presence.

If You’re a Guest

Communicate: Always RSVP promptly so the host can plan accordingly. For casual gatherings, it’s fine to ask if you can bring a guest, but for formal events, assume only those named on the invitation are invited.

Arrive and Leave on Time: Punctuality shows respect for the host’s effort. Arriving too early can be just as inconvenient as arriving too late. Likewise, be mindful of when it’s time to leave — overstaying can put extra strain on the host.

Bring a Thoughtful Gift: A small token of appreciation, like a bottle of wine, gourmet treats or funny cocktail napkins, shows gratitude for the invitation.

Engage and Mingle: Be social! Introduce yourself, join conversations and make an effort to connect with other guests. Don’t rely on the host to entertain you the entire time — let them enjoy the gathering too.

Respect the Space and Say

Thanks: Follow house rules, whether it’s removing shoes or respecting designated smoking areas. Before leaving, thank the host in person and follow up with a thoughtful note or text the next day to show your appreciation.

Florals ALWAYS IN BLOOM

Fantastical Florals

The owner and leading designer at Wild Veggie Bouquet shares insights on how to create a showstopping floral centerpiece for at-home entertaining.

Best Springtime Florals

Depending on where you live or the aesthetic you’re going for, spring florals can look very different. In the north, spring is all about soft pastel colors: delicate pink, pale yellow and light lavender. These gentle hues create a calm, fresh vibe. Here in South Texas, spring bursts with bold, vibrant wildflowers. From deep blues to fiery reds and bright pops of color, our landscape comes alive with color and energy. So first, decide what type of spring you’re looking to emulate.

Soft & Elegant

NORTHERN PASTEL SPRING

Pale pink tulips

Romantic and lush

Soft yellow daffodils

Bright yet delicate

Lavender hyacinths

Beautiful and fragrant

Pair with blooming branches and wheat grass to reflect a feeling of growth you see in nature.

Vibrant & Wild

SOUTH TEXAS BOLD SPRING

Bluebonnets

A Texas must-have

Indian paintbrush

Striking reds

Orange cosmos and purple lantana

Playful pops of color

Pair with rustic elements such as wild grasses for a natural look.

MAKING A CENTERPIECE LAST

Extending the vase life of your flowers is an art in itself, and it all starts with proper processing and conditioning before arranging them. Here are top tips for ensuring floral arrangements stay fresh and vibrant for as long as possible:

PREPPING

Cut the stems at an angle to maximize water absorption. Remove any leaves submerged in water. Leaving foliage on the stems can shorten flower life due to bacterial growth and excessive water loss through the leaves.

CONDITIONING

Bulb flowers, such as fresh daffodils, release sap that can harm other flowers. Let them sit in a separate container with fresh water for about four hours after cutting before combining them with other blooms.

MAINTAINING

Change the water daily to prevent bacteria buildup. Remove wilting stems from your bouquet daily, as they release ethylene gas, which accelerates the aging of surrounding flowers.

Designed in a whitefooted contemporary vase, this arrangement features large roses in soft peach and bold magenta tones, complemented by bright poppies, deep red ranunculus and pink anemones.

LONGEVITY

Keep your flowers cool — no direct sunlight or heat exposure. Use flower food to provide essential nutrients. For extra freshness, spray the finished arrangement with Finishing Touch by FloraLife or a similar product.

OUTDOORS, IN

Bring twisting branches, wispy grasses, seed pods, fruits or vegetables incorporated into arrangements. These add depth, movement and a touch of magic.

PERSONALIZE

If you are hosting a party, florals created for your guests like mini bouquets, individual bud vases or floral ice cubes in drinks add a personal touch.

Designed in a classic glassfooted compote vase, this floral arrangement includes deep pink ranunculus, a protea, green artichokes, adjusted sunflowers and alocasia leaves.

Styling Tips

TIP 1

For a an effortless garden-style look, let blooms spill organically over the edges of your vessel, and avoid rigid symmetry. Soft, airy textures create movement, and unexpected elements like seed pods, aromatic herbs, blooming branches — or even seasonal fruits — add a fresh-from-the-garden charm.

TIP 2

Not everything at once, of course, but a “wow factor” is a must! Add loose stems matching the main centerpiece to placement cards or design a variety of vessels of different shapes and styles in the same color palette for a beautifully curated yet organic feel.

TIP 3

For pastels, go with soft linens and vintage vases for a refined touch. For bold blooms, use wooden crates to embrace a rustic charm.

COMMON MISTAKES

One unnecessary tendency I see is arranging everything in a stiff, symmetrical manner — which can make an arrangement look lifeless. To avoid this, embrace movement and asymmetry. Also, consider scale: An arrangement that’s too tall may block friendly conversation, while one that’s too small might not make an impact.

The Value of Vendors

At-home entertaining offers a cozy yet stylish way to bring people together. With the help of local vendors, every detail — from delicious dishes to customized cocktails — can be tailored to create memorable experiences.

TOP ATTORNEYS 2025

Summary. To create the list, the magazine contracted DataJoe Research to facilitate an online peer-voting process and Internet research process. DataJoe Research is a software and research company specializing in data collection and verification, and conducts various nominations across the United States on behalf of publishers. To create the list, DataJoe Research facilitated an online peer-voting process. We paired this with an Internet research process to identify success characteristics. DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If we were not able to find evidence of a lawyer's current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that lawyer was excluded from the list. In addition, we checked available public sources to identify lawyers disciplined for an infraction by the state regulatory board. These entities were excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied result to the magazine for its final review and adjustments.

Final note. We recognize that there are many good lawyers who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the region. Inclusion in the list is based on the opinions of responding lawyers in the region. We take time and energy to ensure fair voting, although we understand that the results of this survey nomination and Internet research campaign are not an objective metric. We certainly do not discount the fact that many, many good and effective lawyers may not appear on the list.

Disclaimers. DataJoe uses best practices and exercises great care in assembling content for this list. DataJoe does not warrant that the data contained within the list are complete or accurate. DataJoe does not assume, and hereby disclaims, any liability to any person for any loss or damage caused by errors or omissions herein whether such errors or omissions result from negligence, accident, or any other cause. ATTORNEY PROFILES 2025

ohn D. Garcia is a true South Texas native. Raised in Mathis, Texas, and later graduating from Calallen High School, he first attended Del Mar College with a dream of becoming an attorney. He was quickly accepted into A&M Kingsville, and after graduating, found himself at Texas Tech School of Law. He was elected President of his Class, then President of the Hispanic Law Students Association, and finally in his third year, elected President of the Law School’s Student Body He knew he wanted to be a lawyer since childhood, but didn’t actually know how to become one. He worked as an entry level court clerk and met a few practicing attorneys. One such attorney was local legend Rene Rodriguez, who promised to show Garcia the ropes when he was done with law school. Sadly, Mr. Rodriguez became ill and passed away before fulfilling that promise himself. Instead, “El Cucuy” sent Top Criminal Defense Attorney Terry Shamsie to train Garcia from scratch. John D. Garcia handles mostly criminal defense and personal injury cases, with the occasional family and civil law case sprinkled in. Under guidance from the area’s most fierce defense attorney, John D. Garcia’s rise to prominence really started decades ago, when he was just a boy from this town, with a really big dream.

erkins & Perkins is not just another law firm — it’s a family dedicated to fighting for those who need it most. Founded by father-son duo Eric and Jared Perkins, the firm has built a reputation for standing up for injury victims and those wrongfully accused.

Since 1989, Eric has worked tirelessly for his clients to ensure the best results possible, and after hundreds of trials, has earned a reputation of being a fierce and effective trial attorney. These qualities and traits have been passed on to Jared as well, and the firm’s track record proves it. Over the past few years, Perkins & Perkins has secured numerous multi-million-dollar settlements and verdicts for its clients. Eric says the secret to the firm’s success is getting to actually know its clients, and treating them like family: “At Perkins & Perkins, we see our clients as human beings, not just as numbers on paper.” Jared says, “Our clients actually get to talk to me, unlike with other law firms. We make sure they are heard and we are ready to fight for them to the very end. Their case becomes personal to us.”

Perkins & Perkins is dedicated to serving our community, and its attorneys pride themselves on providing the attentiveness and results you need, regardless of the legal problems you face. As Eric says, “If we can’t help you, we know someone who can.” Their team is ready to stand by your side.

Springtime Soiree

Recipes to make entertaining this season a breeze

As the days grow longer and the air warmer, spring offers the perfect opportunity to gather friends and family for lively outdoor entertaining. Here are food and drink ideas to make hosting a piece of cake.

Whet the appetite of your guests with a tarte soleil. This French appetizer is made by slicing and twisting filled puff pastry to resemble a sun. Despite its impressive appearance, this stunner is easy to assemble and endlessly customizable.

Wash down the first course with a gin-gin mule. This cousin to the Moscow mule uses gin in lieu of vodka for a crisper, clean finish. Make a non-alcoholic version by substituting the spirits with extra ginger beer.

Whether it’s a small backyard gettogether or a bonfire at the beach, a successful spring soiree needs only three ingredients: great food, refreshing drinks and good company.

PREP TIME: 20 minutes

COOK TIME: 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

4 oz regular cream cheese, softened

1/4 cup red onion, finely minced

1/4 cup fresh dill, chopped

1/4 tsp black pepper

2 puff pastry sheets, thawed

6 oz smoked salmon

1 egg yolk

1 tbsp milk

2 tsp everything bagel seasoning

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350˚F and place a rack in the middle position.

Stir together cream cheese, onion, dill and black pepper in a small bowl and set aside.

Line your work surface with a 15-inchlong sheet of parchment paper. Roll out the puff pastry to a 12”x12” square. Using a pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry into a 12-inch circle. Transfer the cut puff pastry sheet to a baking sheet.

Repeat the process with the second sheet of puff pastry.

Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the prepared puff pastry on the baking sheet, leaving a 1-inch border. Cover the cream cheese with pieces of smoked salmon. Place the second puff pastry round on top of the filling and gently press the edges together to seal in the filling.

Set a small glass upside down in the center of the pastry round. Use a sharp knife to cut through both pastry rounds in fourths starting at the edge and stopping where the glass begins. Cut each quadrant into fourths. Cut any large pieces that remain in half, until you have 16-20 rays.

Gently twist each ray three times until they’ve all been twisted. Whisk together egg yolk and milk and brush a thin layer over the entire tarte. Sprinkle everything bagel seasoning over the tarte and bake for 30-35 minutes, until golden brown. Serve warm or room temperature.

Cucumber Gin-Gin Mule

Makes 1 cocktail

PREP TIME: 5 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

1 mint sprig

1 3-inch piece of cucumber, peeled, seeded and diced

3/4 ounce fresh lime juice

2 ounces gin

2-3 ounces ginger beer

Cucumber ribbon and mint sprig, for garnish

DIRECTIONS:

In a shaker, gently muddle mint and cucumber in lime juice. Add the gin and ice and shake for 12-15 seconds, until thoroughly chilled.

Strain into a highball glass. Top with ginger beer and garnish with a cucumber ribbon and mint sprig.

Palomas

Journey through the Coastal Bend’s zesty takes on the beloved beverage

The Paloma is a vibrant and refreshing cocktail that has become a favorite among tequila lovers and casual drinkers. Often hailed as Mexico’s unofficial national drink (and a Coastal Bend favorite, no less), it combines tequila’s bold, earthy flavors with the bright, zesty punch of grapefruit, creating a perfect balance of sweet and sour. Simple yet satisfying, it’s easy to make and hard to resist.

Nueces Whiskey Library

3827 S. ALAMEDA ST.

The magic of the Paloma is exemplified at Nueces Whiskey Library. Over a perfect pour of tequila blended with freshly squeezed grapefruit and lime juice, the Topo Chico topper sizzles the tip of your nose upon first sip … but only after the tongue indulges in a hint of tajin laced around the rim. NWL’s version is shaken, not stirred.

BKK

3850 S. ALAMEDA ST. UNIT 27

BKK’s “Palomo” is as crisp and refreshing as you’d imagine. It’s the ideal drink to pair with Thai cuisine when craving an effervescent treat after a savory bite. Tequila, grapefruit, lime and soda stirred and served over ice, BKK’s Palomo serves fusion at its best.

YOLA

3818 S. ALAMEDA ST.

For its classic take on the beloved Paloma, YOLA crafts a traditional cocktail with precision. Served in a crystal low baller, the YOLA Paloma is rooted in a healthy helping of tequila and an energetic punch of grapefruit. The addition of soda, lime and Tajin leaves a lingering desire to take another sip.

The Mariner

108 PEOPLES STREET T-HEAD

This little hideaway bursts with surprises at every turn. The Mariner’s Paloma starts with its presentation. Garnished with a dehydrated orange slice, this simple drink is made extraordinary when the tall, slender glass displays the exacting pour of tequila mixed with flavorful grapefruit. Topo, Tajin and lime seal the deal on this invigorating libation.

BUS

702 N. CHAPARRAL ST.

BUS serves up a Paloma as cool as its customers. It is a hipster’s ideal take on an iconic warm-weather indulgence. Lemon and lime wedges curve across the rim of an elevated tumbler, doused with Tajin (or salt if you prefer) and filled with equal parts tequila, grapefruit and Topo Chico. Sounds simple, but so is luxury if you do it right.

THE MARINER

Mixing Things Up

The Post and Michael Green deliver a new lineup of innovative craft cocktails and menu items

The Post at Lamar Park has been a trailblazer in Corpus Christi’s craft cocktail scene, and with its commitment to creativity, quality and innovation, it continues to set the standard for mixology. Its revamped menu features innovative cocktails created by award-winning mixologist Michael Green, and blends inventiveness and technique, proving that great cocktails are as much about the experience as the flavor.

While most bars lean into warm, spiced flavors for the cooler months, Green took a different approach. “I wanted something bright and fun,” he shared. “Our cold months are so mild here, and we get a lot of sunshine — these drinks are made for those kinds of days.”

This philosophy is evident in the latest lineup, which bursts with vibrant, refreshing flavors like those of the Apasionada and the Sea Witch. The tropical allure of passionfruit mingling with Minjenta Reposado, Aperol and lime juice with a zesty Tajin rim make each Apasionada sip like a sun-drenched escape. The coastal-inspired flavors of the Sea Witch combine Hendrick’s Neptunia Gin, Lillet Blanc, fresh lime juice, simple syrup and grapes, delivering a floral yet citrusy profile embodying the Gulf breeze.

New food items include pork belly, the Georgia Peach salad and the Kick His Ass Seabass, as pictured.

Green’s passion for experimentation is evident not only in the flavor profiles, but in the techniques used.

“One of our cocktails, The Daystar, uses three different techniques — clarification, juicing and carbonation,” Green explained. “It’s about layering flavors in unexpected ways.”

Featuring Dripping Springs vodka, Cocchi Americano, clarified lemon juice and Granny Smith apples that are juiced and then clarified, The Daystar is carbonated, bottled and capped in-house for a crisp, ready-to-pour experience.

Another technique used is infusion. From grilled peach tequila and pineappleinfused Mezcal to rice-washed gin, each element is designed to enhance depth and complexity.

Alongside the multiple new drinks on the menu, The Post has also introduced new food items that pair seamlessly with its cocktail offerings. The Georgia Peach balances sweet and savory with grilled peaches, prosciutto, shaved parmesan and candied pecans on a bed of arugula, drizzled with wildflower honey balsamic vinaigrette. For heartier fare, the Chicken Pesto Sandwich offers a choice of grilled or fried chicken breast with pesto sauce and parmesan on a ciabatta bun, served with crispy garlic fries.

With this latest cocktail menu that embraces bold flavors, inventive techniques and a keen eye for trends, Green and his team have once again raised the bar. Whether you’re a longtime enthusiast or a newcomer to the craft scene, these new offerings invite you to sip, savor and experience the artistry firsthand.

The Art of Fika

How coffee between friends brought a Swedish tradition to Corpus Christi

When Jeannette Del Angel met Alexandra Dyckman in 2021, she admired her new friend’s intentional approach to their coffee dates. “We were meeting for coffee all the time,” Del Angel reminisced. “I really appreciated how much she enjoyed just slowing down for a moment.”

Originally from Stockholm, Dyckman taught Del Angel about the Swedish tradition of fika (fee-kah). Both a verb and a noun, fika indicates a pause throughout the day to enjoy coffee and something to eat. “It means a lot in just one word,” Del Angel shared. “It reminds me to slow down and appreciate small moments with the people I love.”

Del Angel’s expert confectionary skills have offered sweet, simple pleasures to her native Corpus Christi for years, most recently through her pop-up business Sucré and her involvement in opening Central Kitchen.

“I was wanting to create my own space,” she shared, and Dyckman provided some inspiration: a book called Fika. Flipping through the pages of recipes, Del Angel found herself thinking: “This is what my concept is going to be … because I do this already.”

Pictured above: spinach ricotta danish, Swedish bun, Fika shortbread cookie, lingonberry linzer cookie, chocolate chip cookie, berry almond danish and a kouign amann.

She had a hunch other people were also taking fika without realizing it, and her pastries could play a role in elevating the coffee break. “I want them to be so distracted by the flavor of the pastry that it becomes a moment for them,” Del Angel shared.

In attempting to craft a memorable fika experience for everyone, Del Angel set sights on the space next to local jewelry shop Lavender+Lee on Alameda. When construction delays arose, crowdfunding from the community actually helped finish the build-out. “A piece of everyone is in this space, and it’s just so amazing to see that it was community-built,” the owner said.

The microbakery handcrafts pastries like the Swedish bun, which resembles a puffy pretzel but tastes like a cinnamon roll imbued with cardamom. “I want it to be very artisan, so someone knows that we took the time to do this for them,” Del Angel shared. She also encourages folks to embrace the full fika slowdown with a pour-over coffee, custom blended by Driftwood Coffee Co. just up the road.

Though she spends half the year in Sweden, Dyckman attended Fika’s soft opening in January. In the whirlwind of well-wishes and open-for-business endeavors, Del Angel found the briefest moment, while coffee brewed, to sit down with her friend.

Fika is now open Wednesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and if there is a friend you have not seen in far too long, it’s the perfect place to fill your cup.

AROUND THE BEND

Clay Connections

A studio’s commitment to community guides it through a new chapter

On a beautiful Texas winter morning, the sun shone brightly on Board of Directors President Kelley Mailhes as she cut the ribbon on the Barry Brown Clay Studio’s first brick and mortar location — a full-circle tribute to a man who devoted his life to those around him.

“He was a war hero,” said Mailhes about the studio’s namesake. “I am proud to carry on his name [at the new location]. It’s important to us to carry on that legacy.”

A Vietnam vet, family man, competitive sailor and passionate artist, Brown never did anything halfway. As a retiree, he immersed himself in sailing and pottery, graduating with a fine arts degree from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 1996. He went on to establish a clay studio in the Art Center alongside a small group of local sculptors.

Wendy Maurer, one of Brown’s original students, stayed close in subsequent years as a resident artist. She joined the group in 2000, once Brown had settled into his nook in the Art Center, and Maurer and her fellow members played a key role in continuing Brown’s work after his passing.

“It was scary, at first,” Maurer said. “He took care of everything. But all 50 members at the time stepped up, and we did what we needed to do. It was a huge success over the years, and such a special place to work.”

Mailhes spent her first year as president continuing the Barry Brown legacy beyond just the namesake — creating a studio prioritizing affordability, inclusivity and community outreach. Grants and gracious volunteers keep membership costs low, while guided lessons and themed nights keep accessibility high. Efforts culminated in a one-ofa-kind space where any clay artist can feel comfortable experimenting

with their creations, hopefully making some friends along the way.

Now officially in the heart of historic Six Points, an area they plan to contribute to revitalizing, both Maurer and Mailhes described their new locale as a match made in heaven.

Mailhes plans on intertwining two valuable aspects of her life — her special ed background as a speech therapist and her love of clay — in a new initiative titled “Clay Connections.” She looks forward to hosting classes for those with special abilities in the Coastal Bend and, over the next year, going on to address many more artistic needs within the community.

“We are working hard to continue to grow each week,” Mailhes said. “That way, when members hit the studio, there’s somebody to say hi to. Someone to laugh and talk about clay with. People want to meet people, and we hope we can help build that community.”

Where Passion Meets Purpose

Inside the basketball-focused force that is Supreme Athletics Training Center

Supreme Athletics Training Center, the newly opened basketball facility pioneered by Jacolby Satterwhite, is a space where the youth of Corpus Christi come to hone their craft. The training site is a home for those looking to dream and grow their skillset under the guidance of Satterwhite, who is transforming the landscape of the local basketball culture.

Satterwhite’s journey started in the Hillcrest neighborhood of Corpus Christi. “Basketball has always been my anchor,” he shared. “I started training one kid at a park — just the two of us out in the heat with no roof. From there, word spread, and suddenly, I needed more space. Renting gyms wasn’t cutting it anymore, and that’s when I realized I needed a home base to do this the right way.”

As the city’s only basketball-specific training center, it’s become the go-to spot for the region’s top young players. The Training Center is a space where quality players come to get even better. “And even the kids who aren’t as skilled develop into great players here,” Satterwhite added.

Satterwhite focuses on more than just developing basketball ability. His goals include building confidence, fostering discipline and helping kids see their potential. “Nothing beats putting kids in college,” he said. Seeing those he trains succeed and reach their goals is his favorite part of the job.

Beyond basketball, Satterwhite sees his role as a mentor and example for his community. He scratches his entrepreneurial itch through his clothing line, inspiring ambitious curiosity in his athletes, and always makes it a point to attend his athletes’ school and club games or tournaments. Needless to say, Satterwhite is a fixture in the local sports scene.

The gym itself is a testament to his vision. The space is equipped with everything an athlete could need, from the VertiMax system for agility and explosiveness and weights for strength training to an open space designed for precision drills.

A project of this scale is contingent on the village that provides the vision. Brad Walker is someone of great importance to the development of the Supreme Athletics Training Center. “I started training his kid, and we built a close relationship. During the process of acquiring the building, Brad really helped me in some key areas. His support meant the world to me, and I’m incredibly grateful for him believing in what I was doing,” an appreciative Satterwhite said.

Supreme Athletics Training Center is something rare. The Training Center is a place where basketball transforms into something bigger, a symbol of what can happen when passion meets purpose. By putting in a bit of effort with the proper guidance, the juice is always worth the squeeze, especially if you trust the process.

Gatherings of Grandmothers

Philanthropic and social outlets for the city’s grandmas

The National Federation of Grandmothers Clubs of America Inc. was chartered in 1938 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds to support innovative research focused on the causes, treatment and cure of childhood diseases.

The ladies celebrated grandmothers along the way by advocating for National Grandmothers’ Day. In 1978, President Carter made Grandparents’ Day an official holiday, to be celebrated the first Sunday after Labor Day.

Corpus Christi got its first of three Grandmothers Clubs in 1948 — there was the Friendly Grandmothers Club, the Busy Grandmothers Club and the Corpus Christi Grandmothers Club.

As part of their fundraising, they supported the social interests of members. For decades, you could find newspaper announcements of meetings to be hosted

in members’ homes. They pulled out all the stops as hostesses to welcome their group for luncheons, desserts or casseroles, and often played cards and dominoes afterward.

But it wasn’t all about the entertaining — they hosted bazaars to sell their homemade goods and gathered donations for their causes at their meetings. For one Christmas party hosted by Mrs. Irene McGregor (Doc McGregor’s wife), the ladies dressed and donated dolls to Goodwill Industries.

The Grandmothers Club movement grew nationwide, and ladies from Corpus Christi served on the national board and traveled states away to conferences, meeting modern, active women like themselves who also leaned into their role as grandmothers to support their communities (and have a little fun, too).
