Gynecomastia Many men have an enlargement of breast tissue that is bothersome to them. A large percentage of men develop it as a part of the physical changes that occur during aging. It can also occur during puberty as a result of hormonal changes as well as certain supplements, drugs and steroid use. There are some medications that can help, but the results aren’t very predictable and the medications are not FDA approved. Surgical treatment offers a reliable way to restore the normal appearance of the chest so that self confidence is regained, which can be especially important for young men. Treatment usually involves liposuction and direct excision of the gland beneath the nipples. The incision is small and usually not noticeable, and results can be dramatic and quickly seen. The downtime from this procedure is usually two to five days. Being at a healthy weight is key for successful results before and after gynecomastia surgery. Significant weight changes after liposculpture can affect the outcome of your surgery. After you decide you want plastic surgery, the next step is to pick your surgeon. It is very important to make sure your surgeon is well trained, has completed his/her residency, and is board certified. In plastic surgery, a membership in the American Board of Plastic Surgery confirms that your surgeon has successfully completed residency, passed their board exams, and follow the high ethical and professional standards set by the organization. Not all are board certified. It is also important to make sure that you have a good rapport with your plastic surgeon and his/her office staff.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE COASTAL BEND?
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE COASTAL BEND?
I’ve always loved the bayfront views! I love all the palm trees and the gulf. I’ve driven down Ocean Drive thousands of times but it just never gets old!
I think some of my first steps were taken in the sand and that being said, my favorite thing about the Coastal Bend is the beach. Something about the coastal life is so special to me, from the humidity in the air to the easy, laid-back feeling of day-to-day life.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU HERE AT THE BEND MAGAZINE? Being an intern, no day is really typical. I focus mainly on social media and helping plan events, but I’m usually just helping out wherever I’m needed; whether that means organizing the datebook or running around taking pictures for social media, I get to learn something new everyday! WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
Catering Available
I hope to have a career in Public Relations. After graduation I’m considering attending grad school to get a master’s degree in Strategic Communication to someday work in PR for a business or organization.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU HERE AT THE BEND MAGAZINE? First thing in the morning, I like to check out different southern and coastal magazines to see what they’re writing about, and use that as a springboard for my own projects. I spend most of the day brainstorming, writing articles, or checking grammar, and while that doesn’t exactly sound like everyone’s cup of tea, I wouldn’t have it any other way! WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? Whatever the good Lord has planned! I hope to work for a magazine such as Texas Monthly or National Geographic once I graduate. To write, travel, and be able to help people for a living is basically my dream.

Confessions of a Millennial
ast November I experienced somewhat of an awkward moment. I was sitting in the middle of a workshop at a publishing conference and someone brought up the subject of hiring millennials. I was the only person at the table who fit into that category. I’m not sure if the others at the table did not realize it or if they just didn’t care—either way a few of the other publishers started going on and on about how they hated to hire millennials because of how lazy and entitled they all were. It wasn’t the first time I had heard the negative connotation associated with those of us born somewhere around the early 1980’s to 2000. Personally, I believe every generation has it’s share of lazy and entitled people, and maybe those publishers happened to hire some, but I highly doubt it is true of every millennial out there. However, I have a confession to make. There was a time, not long ago, when I thought I knew a lot more than I actually did. It wasn’t that I had a big ego, I just had a lot of passion and dreams for the future. If it wasn’t for a few mentors in my life, who helped me understand what it takes to achieve those dreams and educated me along the way, I don’t believe I would have ever achieved them. A few months back, we asked our readers to nominate some outstanding students in the Coastal Bend for our second annual Students Who Shine feature. We were limited to eight students and it was difficult trying to decide who to feature. The students you will meet on pg. 34 in this month’s issue are all bright, talented, hard working, and generous. They not only represent a large group of students in the region who share the same qualities, but they give us hope for the next generation of community leaders. I had the pleasure of interviewing Dave Resendez this month who has an incredible story you can read more about on pg. 22. One of the things he attributes to his success is a few people in the community who took time to invest in him. It reminds me of how important it is for one generation to pass on wisdom and knowledge to the next. I think it is important for local businesses to offer jobs, internships, and mentoring to the next generation. It’s something we strive to do at The Bend, because it is amazing what can happen when you combine the vision of the next generation with the knowledge and experience of the present.

When you work in a fast paced environment with constant deadlines, you learn to be flexible. Our original idea for this month's Style section had to be moved to another month, but thanks to Jarred Schuetze and Kylie Kinnett, we were able to pull off a really great style spread. They both worked together to create the concept, find the bags, and organize the shoot in just a few hours. Jarred did a great job designing the spread as well.

BAGS L E T ’ S TA L K
By: Jarred Schuetze Photos: Rachel Benavides Handbags: Julian Gold Location: Art Museum of South Texas For a mere accessory, the handbag has a strong identity. It can be practical, luxurious, mass-produced, or handcrafted. Whether fashionable or functional, the everyday handbag is something you use on a consistent basis. Don’t let the repetition bore you — yes, the bag has to go with everything, but make it a statement. Let this bag be the one you invest in. Go for luxury. Look for a bag made by a notable designer or brand, but avoid the impulse to settle for basic “it-girl” bags like the ones on the arm of every posh girl in the city. Look for handbags that feature design elements such as high-quality leather, jewelry-quality straps, and powerful shapes. You want your bag to be durable, timeless, and bold.

Conversation with
Dave Resendez From homeless to hometown hero, Apollo Towing owner, Dave Resendez, is saving lives. By: Jordan Regas Photo: Rachel Benavides
Tell us a little about your background. We moved to Corpus Christi from California when I was six. We lived in Flour Bluff and my parents had some challenges. I was probably about 13 or 14 years old when I went out on my own. I met my best friend, who I refer to as my brother, Ray. Then I dropped out of school. I made it to the 9th grade, but I actually failed the 8th. I think they just wanted me out of there, I was kind of a hell raiser. So, we left there and I put Ray through high school. We used to mow yards and and clean up cars. We opened up a place called The Detail Shop and detailed cars for about 15 years.
22 The Bend
You mentioned you went out on your own. Were you ever homeless? I lived in a van for a while, I was probably about 14 or 15. It was out in the Bluff at a mechanic shop. Some guy had a van that was there and I paid him about ten bucks a week to live there. They had a shower in the garage I would use. Right after my parents got divorced, my mom got a mobile home. Two days later it burnt to the ground, so I went back to living in my car. My brother Ray was living in a trailer right behind ours, and when he found out about me living in my car, the four of us all ended up living in a one bedroom apartment for about a year.
[the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend]
When did you decide to start Apollo Towing? About 20 years ago, my brother Johnny would keep leaving magazines on my desk, wanting to go into the wrecker business. We found out how expensive a tow truck was, and I wouldn’t do it. Then one day I called this guy, and we worked out a deal that saved us thousands of dollars on a tow truck. I then was on my way to Alabama to pick up a tow truck. All my buddies were calling and telling me I had lost my mind, but here we are today. I think we are the largest in South Texas now. My brother Ray and I have been through a lot of battles, but we never gave up. I think the best thing about it was, we were able to take care of our parents in the end. We recently lost Ray’s parents, but mine are still living and we take care of mine now. You are involved with a number of great causes, but is there one that stands out to you? The No Excuses Program, where we provide a free tow to anyone who is out during the holidays and feels like they were over served, has been the best deal we have done. I like them all, but that is the one I am glad we can do and a lot of people use it. Over the last twenty years, I have had to deal with the other side of the DWI’s. I have seen family members walk into my office to see what is left of the vehicle. The worst accident I have seen in my career was over on Park Rd. 21 in Port Aransas. I will never forget, this girl was graduating that night and she was coming back from her grandmother's after picking up her dress. A drunk driver was heading to Port Aransas and they had a head on collision. They hit so hard the pedals of the Honda Accord went into the girl's abdomen. When we rolled on to the scene, you could see graduation cards blowing around. How else do you battle against drunk driving in the Coastal Bend? Shattered Dreams is probably one of the coolest events I have ever seen done at a school. It’s all about drunk driving. They will go to a school and, usually with the theater department, will put cars outside and will stage a car accident. Driscoll Children's Hospital is involved as well. It is the best staged deal I have ever seen in my entire life…I have yet to leave one without seeing some students crying. It is the real deal, they will use the jaws of life to cut open the cars. It is without a doubt like a real accident scene we have rolled up on. What advice would you give to other local businesses looking to make an impact in the community? To me, just ask. You just ask and you will find something. Just ask, how can I get involved? Because if you are having a problem with the vision, then you need to ask. I saw the problem as far as what my industry can do. There is the chamber, the Corpus Christi business association. If you don’t know, just ask.

Juice Bars When life gives you lemons, make cold-pressed, energizing go-go juice. If you’re an avid juicer, a curious beginner, an occasional cleanser, or just want to sip a tasty drink, these top five places for juice prove that being healthy has never tasted so good. The VINE Juice Company
A dedicated juice bar called The VINE Juice Company is where you’ll find many things like a daily serving’s worth of vegetables and fruits that are pressed into seven different juices. However, some things you won’t find at The VINE? Their products are gluten-free, dairy-free, and contain no added sugar. We recommend the WHATAMELON (watermelon, mint, and lime) or the Hot Tamale (jalapeno, red bell, yellow bell, and apple). Sweet Life Juicery
Sweet Life Juicery uses many local ingredients to create one-of-a-kind flavors. The After Midnight, for example, contains coconut activated charcoal, ginger, Himalayan Sea Salt, and more. The best part about Sweet Life Juicery is its availability. Pick up a few bottles at the Downtown or Padre Island Farmer’s Markets, Urbana Market + Deli (address below), Coffee Waves in Corpus Christi, or call for free home delivery. Eleanor’s Coffee Bar + Market
Eleanor’s may have coffee in their name, but there’s plenty of juice inside. Seven hydraulic-pressed juices are always on the menu, with several selections that rotate seasonally. A fun, local touch is

that Eleanor’s juices are named after streets and neighborhoods in Corpus Christi. Head to Eleanor’s on Alameda Street, and try the Lamar Park, a green machine that’s made sweet with lemon and ginger. Eleanor’s Coffee Bar + Market | (361) 452-1018 | 4231 S Alameda St, Corpus Christi, TX 78412

Raw Bar
The next time you’re reaching for an energy drink, stop. Raw Bar has you covered with an energizing juice called the Awaken, which is made with celery, beets, carrots, cucumber, mint, green apple, lemon, and pineapple. They have three signature juices that contain no less than five different fruits and veggies that will give you natural energy thanks to the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients packed in every bottle. Matcha Konomi
Variety is the spice of life, and spices might just be one of the ingredients in the juices at Matcha Konomi. Every morning, they get their creative juices flowing to make a new daily juice. Their healthy mashups often have creative twists for a unique drink experience. A recent drink was made with apples, carrot, cucumber, lime, and then shaken with fresh dark cherries. [the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend]
The history of juicing fruits and vegetables has deep roots. Dead sea scrolls from 150 B.C. describe a drink made from pounded pomegranate and fig, making early man quite the trendsetter. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s it started to take off, and since the 1990s, juicing has been the main squeeze of many health fanatics. Not all juice are created equal though. The difference between grocery store fruit juice and juicing is apples to oranges. While store juice is mostly sugar, juicing is chockfull of nutrients. The American Heart Association recommends 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, which you can find in a tall glass of real juice. Juicing also allows the body to directly absorb key nutrients because it doesn’t have the fiber otherwise consumed when eating whole produce. Plus, juicing creates spectacularly delicious drinks!

harlie’s Place opened its doors in 1965 as a refuge for men seeking healing from alcohol addiction. Charlie Acklen, for whom the center is named, showed endless compassion for those in his care. He himself was in recovery, and understood the disastrous effects of alcoholism. Today, Charlie’s Place Recovery Center serves adults 18 years and older who seek treatment for substance abuse. The center’s staff includes physicians, nurses, licensed counselors, and recovery coaches. Charlie’s Place offers several recovery programs, including Detox – a medically supervised program designed to safely eliminate the body of physical dependence – to Recovery Support Services – providing longterm accountability, advocacy, and encouragement. In 2016, for the first time in the Center’s history, the primary drug of choice for patients seen at Charlie’s Place was heroin. According to preliminary data compiled by the New York Times, in 2016, roughly 59,000 people died of a drug overdose, making it the leading cause of death of Americans under the age of 50.

The following is an excerpt of a testimonial from a person in recovery: I am in recovery from addiction to alcohol and heroin. Addiction to alcohol has been a part of my family as long as I can remember. In the early 80’s, I used cocaine and alcohol on weekends with friends. A weekend only affair very quickly turned into a full-blown addiction. I relocated from Austin to California. I naively thought a geographical change would be the answer. Instead, my addiction took on a whole different phase. In a weak, drunken moment, I was introduced to heroin by a friend. It changed the course of my life. In a short 3 weeks, I was hopelessly addicted. I was sent to a recovery location in Napa Valley. I stayed 34 days. Within two weeks of release, I was using harder than ever. I lost everything. Back home, there were numerous stays at Charlie’s Place, but I could not get clean. I remember my “bottom” like it was yesterday. I was in an apartment: no electricity, a mattress, a candle, and a dull needle. I was so ashamed; words cannot explain. I had numerous “overdoses” and hospitalizations from
[the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend]
both heroin and alcohol poisoning. The last time I was in Charlie’s Place a very wise man, Walter, told me straight up, “We love you, but this is going to be your last time here. You know what to do. We have taught you everything we know about recovery. It’s up to you.” Four years later I have not put a drug or drink in my body. I have a job I love, and all the benefits of Recovery. My family is back in my life, something I never thought possible. Without the strong words from Walter, I never would have made it out of the nightmare my life had become. Charlie’s Place has many success stories; however, the stark reality is that many people won’t seek treatment in time. If you know someone who needs a new start, call Charlie’s Place at (361) 826-5350. It’s never too late to help the ones you love.

A Day at the Seawall From the glittering waters of the Corpus Christi Bay to the magnificent views of the Lexington, there’s plenty to do and see on the Seawall! By: Haylee Uptergrove Photos: Rachel Benavides
I
t seems like there’s always something going on along the 1.5 mile waterfront that is the Corpus Christi Seawall. A permanent fixture of the downtown landscape, locals and visitors alike can spend a day as close to the bay as possible by biking, jogging, sightseeing, or simply soaking in the rays as the saltwater breeze blows gently across the emerald waters. To start the day off bright and early, catch a sunrise on the bay. Geographically, Corpus Christi is perfectly positioned for some of the best views of the sunrise on the Gulf Coast. Pick a spot at any one of the white benches situated along the Seawall to catch a glimpse of the morning rays breaking over the bay, then lace up your tennis shoes and get your heart pumping. While it gets pretty toasty in the afternoon out on the Seawall, the early morning hours offer the perfect time to go for a run, pull out your bike, or

simply take a peaceful walk for your early morning exercise. If you are wanting to ride down the Seawall, but don’t have a bike to do so, have no fear! Bike Corpus Christi: Bike Share is a great service that will provide you with a “cruiser” to make your way down the wall. With several locations along the Seawall, you can’t miss them. If you’re still looking for a way to spend your morning hours, Fun Time Rentals—a fixture along the Seawall since 1994—offers a daily morning dolphin sightseeing tour around the bay. From 9 AM to 10:30, spend your morning making some new bottlenose buddies. In the afternoon, keep cool in the summer heat by spending your day on McGee Beach, located right off the Seawall in Downtown Corpus. While most of the beaches around the Coastal Bend offer pretty solid waves for the local surfing crowd, McGee Beach is a chill escape for those looking to simply
[the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend]
History of the Seawall After two devastating hurricanes in 1916 and 1919, the mayor of Corpus Christi proposed creating a seawall to better protect the city from the fury of the Gulf during hurricane season. After years of planning, construction on the Seawall began in 1938 and finished in 1941, extending the city two blocks into the bay and creating the familiar landscape of downtown Corpus Christi that many know and love today.
relax, or teach little kiddies to swim. The calm waters lapping gently against the seaweed-free sand is perfect for those looking for a tranquil day by the bay. If you’re seeking an afternoon with a little more excitement in it, Fun Time Rentals has you covered. Offering a variety of rentals for an adventurous day on the water, you have your choice from jet skis and paddle boats to kayaks and canoes, or you can book a trip around the bay on a speed boat. Finally, spend your evening on the Seawall by relaxing in one of the gazebos. As the sun sets on the Corpus Christi Bay, the best views (and photo ops) can be found from one of the eight Miradores del Mar along the Seawall. Literally meaning “Overlooks by the Sea”, these gorgeous gazebos are made to mirror similar structures found in Spain and Morocco. Of course, the biggest of these is the La Mirador del Flor, a memorial dedicated to the late Tejano music queen, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. As a bonus, despite the fact that the lights of downtown might make it a little hard to see the stars at night, you can make your way through our planets in the Voyage: Journey Through Our Solar System exhibit. Running parallel to North Shoreline Boulevard, this one-to-10billion scale model consists of 13 stations representing planets and other objects in the solar system. Perfect for astronomy buffs and amateur stargazers alike. No matter what kind of day you’re looking for—relaxed and laid back, or adventurous and educational—there’s plenty to do along the Corpus Christi Seawall!

Madeleine is ready for life in the fast lane with this flattering black and white ensemble — jacket, pants, top, and classy coordinating heels — all from Express.
Madeleine Maltais could be best described by the phrase triple threat. She is a member of the Texas A&M University-Kingsville track team, she has a 4.0 GPA, and she is actively involved in her community. She is an ambitious girl who takes every opportunity and makes the best of it! “I am not afraid of hard work and sacrifice,” Madeleine says in regards to what it takes to achieve your goals. She is currently in her sophomore year of college and is majoring in Civil Engineering. Her dreams after graduation include helping her community by designing and implementing quality structures for the future. Her passion of caring for others has helped her in her efforts to help those less fortunate. She does this by volunteering her time to various food drives and even started her own last year, where she was able to help donate 1,863 meals to the Food Bank of Corpus Christi. Madeleine usually spends her days working hard in school and working out hard in track, but she also loves to sing and dance! Rolling the windows down and jamming out is one of her favorite pastimes (and stress relievers). Madeleine might have a couple of years left in school, but she is not wasting any time in creating a better future for herself and those around her.
MADELEINE’S THREE KEYS TO SUCCESS: Vision, focus, and faith
Justin is a class act with a look to match including a blue blazer, jeans, shirt and belt from Express.
JUSTIN’S THREE KEYS TO SUCCESS: Determination, passion, and a heart for success
Millennials might have a slightly negative connotation attached to them, but Justin Bustos is determined to prove the world wrong. Justin, now a junior at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, uses passion to push him forward in all he does, and as the Student Body President, he is doing a lot. “No matter what organization or component of my life I am involved in, I make sure to give it my all,” he says. “I want to make it known to my peers that my heart yearns for what I am doing.” With that attitude, it is no wonder Justin has been able to achieve so much. He is majoring in Mechanical Engineering and plans on applying to the Chick-Fil-A Leadership Development Program. This program will help him in obtaining his ultimate goal of owning and operating his own Chick-Fil-A in the future. Some of his favorite accomplishments include, becoming an Eagle Scout and the S. Truett Cathy Remarkable Future Scholarship, which is only awarded to 25 Chick-Fil-A team members! Other than taking steps to better the environment around him, Justin likes to slow down and take time for himself. He does this by playing the drums in his church’s worship band, spending time with his lovely girlfriend, and taking camping trips. One thing Justin doesn’t take for granted? His education. “No matter what I am learning or if I will use it in my future, I enjoy getting to learn new things and expand my experiences through education,” he says. We should all take a page out of Justin’s book and put forth passion and dedication in everything we do…he just might be on to something.

CHRISTIAN’S THREE KEYS TO SUCCESS: Faith, perseverance, and humility
Christian Martinez is one of three siblings in his family, and by one of three, we mean triplets! You can tell he has a heart for others immediately upon meeting him. Christian just finished the eighth grade at Grant Middle School and Carroll High School sure has a star headed their way. He was chosen as the Athlete of the Year and remained on A-Honor Roll the entire three years of middle school. Baseball is his main event and he showcased his skills while playing for two different national baseball teams which he was chosen to be on. While playing ball might be what keeps Christian

occupied, he is no stranger to the books. His mom smiles as she says, “he has a God given talent, but he is also book smart.” Christian has hopes to become a chemical engineer when he gets older and if he stays the same course, we have no doubt he will accomplish this goal! When it comes to helping his community, there is no shortage of good deeds. Christian is a regular alter server at his church and also volunteers at the Mother Teresa Shelter in his spare time. “Helping those in need, being kind to others, and staying humble in every situation,” are the traits he has learned from his role models, which are his parents. Between hitting home runs and studying hard, Christian is one of the Coastal Bend’s brightest stars.

“That’s my Hannah…she’s a comedian,” is one of the first things Hannah’s mother says in regards to her daughter. Meanwhile, Hannah Crawley sits in a spinning chair, twirling herself around over and over. Hannah’s comedic gifts are put to good use at her school’s talent show every year. As a recent fifth grade graduate at Dr. J.A. Garcia Elementary, Hannah’s resume far exceeds that of most twelve year olds. From A/B Honor Roll and perfect attendance, to her Girl Scout Bronze Award and her remarkable art skills, Hannah was a shoe-in for one of our Students Who Shine. She loves to paint and has won multiple awards for her masterpieces. “Art is really important to me,” Hannah says, “you get to express your creativity and share it with others.” One of her favorite recognitions is winning the National PTA Reflections Theme contest. She submitted the theme of “Heroes Around Me,” and now every PTA in the nation will use this theme in order to create artwork. When asked what word best describes her, Hannah says kind, and it is very apparent as to why. Her heart is filled with passion to help others and she puts that very passion into her work with Operation Homefront, which helps military families in need. She believes that working hard and believing in yourself are important characteristics to have while in school. Although it may seem like Hannah’s days are filled with community service and creating artwork for school, one of her favorite things to do is play with her dog Buddy and make new friends. Hannah Crawley is a twelve year old superstar and is making strides not only for her future, but the future of her community as well.
Hannah is picture perfect in a classic pink polo and khaki skirt, topped off with a jean jacket and stylish shoes from The Children’s Place — plus a backpack from Journeys, perfect for carrying all her prize-winning artwork.

On the field and in the classroom, Logan is always ready to roll. Here he sports a burgundy polo and navy pants from The Children’s Place complemented by a backpack from Journeys
With a smile from ear to ear, Logan Langenkamp nervously shook hands with each person in the room. This little eight year old’s personality doubles as a ray of sunshine wherever he goes. Logan just finished the second grade at Wood River Elementary and there is not a single teacher there who would have something bad to say about him. He even won the Student of Character Award this past year which explains why all his teachers love him! When he isn’t working hard in school to maintain his A Honor Roll, you can find him playing baseball with his coach-pitch team, with whom he won the Coach Pitch National All-star Championship. When asked what education means to him, Logan says, “I think it is needed to learn and meet new friends,” and we couldn’t agree more! Logan’s parents are most proud of his character. His constantly smiling face and kindness for others is what sets him apart from others. “Some of his closest friends are the children who get ignored on the playground,” Logan’s mother says. It takes a lot for a young boy to have such a big heart, but Logan makes it look easy. His dream is to be either a professional baseball player or an artist when he grows up, and with his talent and dedication, we are sure he will have no trouble achieving those dreams.
LOGAN’S THREE KEYS TO SUCCESS: Staying focused, getting your job done well, and working hard
When first meeting Joshua he was very quiet, respectful. However, once he got in front of the camera, his demeanor changed immediately—he definitely is a natural when it comes to modeling, maybe he should reconsider his career path! Joshua is going into his senior year at Roy Miller High School and teachers and coaches alike probably will weep once he walks the stage. Not only is he their star quarterback and catcher for the baseball team, but Joshua also is number eight in his entire class, with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He is putting that ‘dumb jock’ stereotype to shame with his all-star transcript! Joshua says the one word that best describes him is productive (which makes perfect sense). Whether it’s academics, athletics, or simply helping around the house, he wants to get the job done. Some of Joshua’s favorite awards include the KEYS 1440 Athlete of the Week award for football and his CCISD Academic Excellence Award for being in the top ten students in his class. Joshua plans on attending the University of Texas after graduating next year and majoring in Kinesiology—and to that we say good luck, the world is yours for the taking!
Joshua is the real MVP with this casual look from Buckle including a maroon and white button-up shirt, jeans, and steel grey shoes, with a coordinating backpack from Journeys.

Upon meeting Maddy Fraiche there are three things you will notice. She is sociable, has a beautiful smile, and an equally beautiful heart to match. Maddy just graduated from Ray High School in May and will be making her way to the University of Texas this Fall to major in Public Relations in Communications and Business. While she is excited for what is to come, we are excited about what she has already accomplished! Her resume is stacked with athletics, community involvement, and grade-A academics. Some of her favorite memories in high school are being Ray’s mascot, Mary Lou, and founding a clothing drive for Mission 911 called “Operation: Share the Warmth.” Maddy aspires to make a positive impact on the world and spread kindness to others. It is those very traits that have helped her earn the CCISD “Student of Character” award and the Corpus Christi Rotary Club’s “Student of Excellence” award. Maddy believes her generation is comprised of go-getters. She hopes to contribute to the future by leaving her mark on the world, and we have no doubt she will do just that. Ingraham Orthodontics supports the local community through a scholarship program for current and former patients and by supporting local charities such as Corpus Christi Ballet, Harbor Playhouse, Corpus Christi Symphony, Corpus Christi Tennis Association, Corpus Christi Food Bank, and Metro Ministries. Meeting new people everyday and forming new patient relationships is rewarding for him, knowing he has the opportunity to improve his patients’ smiles and overall dental health. He loves the detail and perfection that orthodontics requires, but people are what it’s all about. It’s not the set of teeth on the smile – “it’s the person behind that smile!”

Vaccination Conversations August is a time when the weather begins to cool down, and the talk of vaccines heats up. By: Alexis Mays Photos: Rachel Benavides
A
s summer ends and school prep begins, parents are busy getting their children ready for the new school year. However, August isn’t just when parents are buying new clothes and supplies, it is also National Immunization Awareness Month, and a time to get mom and dad’s questions about vaccinations answered. National Immunization Awareness Month brings attention to a worldwide medical tool that’s been around for over two centuries. Yet, many parents are unfamiliar with immunization basics, like which ones to get or when to get them. When it comes to vaccinations, there’s no need to take a shot in the dark; The Bend Magazine spoke with health professionals to give you a 360-degree view of vaccines. Although this month of immunization recognition is nationwide, it spotlights a worldwide tool: “The development of vaccines has saved hundreds of thousands, to millions of lives in this country, and around the world,” says Dr. Jaime Fergie, Infection Disease Specialist at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Even though vaccines have been saving lives for over 220 years, most have no idea what’s in a vaccine, or how they work. Dr. Fergie explains there are two different ways vaccines work, but they both have something in common. “They are incapable of causing illness,” he says, “vaccines are very safe.” The majority of immunizations contain particles of the very germ you’re being protected against, and other vaccinations, like ones for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella, contain a live virus that has been altered to where they cannot cause the illness. Once the immunization is in your body, it works by stimulating your own immune system to develop antibodies that will protect you. Another question parents may wonder is what vaccines their child should get
54 The Bend
and when? The Center for Disease Control and Prevention answers this question with a recommended vaccination schedule, beginning when a child is two months old. Dr. John Hellerstedt, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, explains, “the vaccine schedule is designed to make sure babies are protected early in life, when they are most vulnerable and before they are likely to be harmed by potentially serious diseases.” Thankfully, dealing with insurance companies is one thing parents don’t need to add to their to-do list. Dr. Fergie explains, “recommended vaccines are always covered by Medicaid, and all insurance companies are also mandated to provide coverage for these vaccines.” To anyone who is uninsured, or under-insured, you will not face the barrier of cost either. Just ask Shereen Lopez, who is a medical navigator at the Coastal Bend Wellness Foundation. She says, “the Coastal Bend Wellness Foundation is a great community resource. We will not turn anyone away and we won’t leave any child without a vaccine. There are many voices in the conversation of vaccines, but the message from top medical professionals is clear: vaccines are a parent’s best shot to ensure their children become healthy adults.

More than a Gym The Barre Fitness Studio brings you the Amy Heidecker Method By: Alexa Alley Photos: Rachel Benavides
F
or Amy Heidecker, fitness is not just a hobby or a chore, but a way of life. From jazzercise to kickboxing, and everything in between, group exercise and personal training is where Amy finds fulfillment not just for herself, but for her clients. With 41 years of fitness experience and training under her belt, the Amy Heidecker Method at the Barre Fitness Studio is now the primary way Amy uses fitness to inspire and guide others to reach their goals and most importantly, have fun while doing it. The Amy Heidecker Method “incorporates large, functional movements and isolated muscle work” all while implementing “modifications and adjustments catered to each student’s individual needs,” Amy says. The main difference between The Barre Method and the Amy Heidecker Method is that the Heidecker method doesn’t tuck the spine, maximizing the effect of each movement throughout the class. Each class starts with a warm-up and gradually builds into more intense movements. There is no

minimum fitness requirements to attend, making each class diverse in experience, but unified in the goal to stay healthy and fit. However, “please do not confuse this with an ‘easy’ workout or stretching class,” Amy implies, “we create enough repetitions in movements to take your body to total fatigue, but never failure.” The workout itself incorporates ballet barre plies, cardio elements, and several other isolated muscle activities such as real squats and push ups. Each workout is completely full body, for example, doing pushups on the barre combined with a hamstring curl with quick transitions in between movements to ensure your heart rate remains elevated. Each movement can be modified to be completely low or high impact depending on what each student is comfortable with. However, the Barre Fitness Studio’s “hidden gem,” so to speak, is personal training. Each session implements the same kind of exercises, but more individualized to the client’s goals. “I have to actively listen to what is going on in the moment. I am going to push them in a more individualized way to reach their goals,” Amy says. To ensure the safety and goals of each client are maximized, a general

physical assessment noting current and past injuries is taken and a clear understanding of each client’s goals is vocalized. “Part of the real fun I think is that the concentration is so intense that it acts as a stress reliever; the frustrations of life melt away and I find that the students can't wait to come to the studio,” Amy excitedly states as she describes the upbeat and positive environment at The Barre Fitness Studio. The Amy Heidecker Method is for anyone and everyone. Amy emphasizes the desire to “meet clients where they are on life’s journey.” Upon walking in the studio, the familial atmosphere and small class size truly makes you want to take attend and experience why everyone in the studio is so passionate about the Amy Heidecker method. With instructors trained and taught by Amy, each student can't help but have a positive experience in a fun, safe, and goal oriented environment. Whether you are enthusiastic about fitness or not, taking a class at the Barre Fitness Studio will be sure to teach you something new and inspire you to get fit in a great community of people.

Make Yourself at Home They say home is where the heart is, and for the Becquets, that couldn’t be more true By: Alexa Alley Photos: Jason Page
W
arm, hospitable, friendly…these are just a few words to describe the atmosphere in which any guest is inevitably welcomed into upon entrance to the Becquet home. Though they have recently ditched the dated warm tones for something more modern and cool, the warmth of their invitation is something that will never go out of style. Sitting on a one-acre lot in the quiet neighborhood of Country Creek, Robert and Deanna Becquet have, without a doubt, created a beautiful home filled with aesthetically pleasing style, good food, and even better people. Upon deciding to renovate in the latter part of 2015, Deanna recalls being encouraged to “declutter and modernize their home a bit” in large part by their daughter. “We had oak washed cabinets, dark countertops, and a lot of furniture,” Deanna says, “it was time to update.” The couple shared a desire for their
60 The Bend
[the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend]
home to be more open and accommodating for large gatherings with family and friends. After knocking down a couple of walls and extending their kitchen area into what was formerly a part of their back patio, the kitchen and living areas are now illuminated by natural light and spacious enough for countless people to gather. The kitchen, complete with quartz countertops and white cabinets, opens into a sunroom with a single exposed brick wall and floor-to-ceiling windows that allow ample natural light to fill the space, making it both open and bright. All flooring was replaced downstairs with porcelain tile planks made to look like wood. The addition of their lighter and brighter flooring, countertops, and tile was done with the help of the Becquet’s nephew, Sam Ferris, who knows a thing or two about renovations. “We wanted the warm look of wood floors with the durability and practicality of tile,” the couple remarked when talking about their choice for the new floors. Although they admit it was, at times, stressful to make decisions, they say it was exciting to see all the transformations come to life. However, it was not without help from their contractor and many interior design consultations that the vision for their home became a reality. Although it was a tedious process, it has proven to be worth it. Though updating the house has allowed them to utilize the space to its fullest potential, the main goal behind the renovation was to be able to welcome others better.
“If I ever had a place to open up, I would love to give back the blessing of being invited in,” Deanna says when speaking about their natural inclination towards entertaining and hospitality. “We have always wanted to foster a commonplace for people to come and feel like they can relax and be themselves and feel loved,” Robert says. They can both agree they find the most joy in their home when it is filled with people. Whether it is having their family over for dinner, throwing a pool party, or playing basketball in the driveway with Young Life students, the Becquets have always tried and succeeded at using their home as an avenue for people to feel known. The newly renovated kitchen has played a large role in being able to foster this kind of environment because “having food makes people feel loved and welcomed,” the Becquets both agree. They both recall countless conversations they have been able to have by just allowing others to have a seat at their table. The Becquets have truly made their house a home. For Deanna, she finds simple enjoyment by sitting in their new sunroom drinking coffee, or working in their herb and vegetable garden outside. For Robert, he enjoys tending to the yard and pool to make sure it is always in good shape to have people over. Though the house has evolved over the years into what is now, a “clean and simple” place to gather, it has always been a place centered around family, good conversation, and making others always feel at home.

Keep it Clean Are you giving your laundry room the attention it deserves? Styling & Design By: Jo Anne Howell Photos: Rachel Benavides On Location: Cinnamon Shore
E
fficiency is key, and not just when it comes to your washer and dryer. There are loads of ways to enjoy your laundry room space, and since it’s an area you will likely be spending a lot of time in, you should definitely take pleasure in it.
Using decorative storage pieces is a good way to store products. You should think of your laundry room counter as important as your kitchen counter! Keeping necessities like detergent and dryer sheets in clear vessels such as jars, boxes, or containers, will allow for quick reach and easy reference when running low. Larger laundry rooms can be used as a “mud room,” a space for the family’s shoes, jackets, and umbrellas. These are items that should be easily accessible on your way out the door. It's also good to keep schedules, notes, and reminders in your laundry room so you can review them as you are folding clothes. 62 The Bend
Quick Tips: • Great lighting will brighten up any of the dullest duties. Large windows or a great light fixture can have a great impact on any laundry room. • Laundry hampers should be in every room of the house, with one main receptacle in the laundry room. • Laundry room sinks are a great way to wash dirty hands or soak stems of floral as you get in from the market. • Keeping your area and counter tops clear of visual clutter will keep a streamline look and feel.
The laundry room is usually a room that gets overlooked in the house and we sometimes don’t put as much effort into creating the perfect space for it. However, your laundry room can be just as stylish as any other area in your house and deserves time and attention!

Bart Braselton
A Moment of Gratitude As the kids head back to school and moms and dads around the Coastal Bend get ready for the onslaught of the busy fall ahead, the Braselton Homes family is taking a moment to celebrate our blessings. The time of year for local, as well as state and national, awards and recognition has again arrived. Our company has been blessed over the years to become the Most Awarded Homebuilder in South Texas. We always anticipate this time of the year, as it gives us a great chance to see how we stack up locally and statewide as well as nationally. Locally, the Parade of Homes awards are the most coveted, and take the direct pulse of the community. They judge how Braselton Homes is perceived here in our hometown, as well as across the state. The national awards gauge how we compare to other homebuilders and communities around the country. The results are in, and we’re glad to say this last year was no exception to our legacy of Award Winning Homes. We are so proud of our dedicated team for all their hard work and the national recognition we have received. We are also grateful to the Parade of Homes judges, who hail from all across Texas, and to our friends and neighbors around town who voted for our 2016 Parade homes. As for local and state awards, the 2017 Parade of Homes is now in the books. Braselton Homes was honored, again, to win more awards than any other Parade of Homes Builder. We won a stunning 16 awards this year—more than twice the number of awards won by any other builder. These included two first place finishes, of which we are very proud, recognizing our efforts to build our environmentally friendly, energy-saving Eco-Homes. When we dedicated ourselves years ago to building the most energy efficient, green homes in South Texas, our goal was not only to ensure that our homes were the best possible environment for families to live in, but also to save our customers
as much as 50% per month on their electric, gas and water bills. We are so humbled to know that, year after year, our hard work is recognized, not only by other builders statewide serving as the Parade Judges, but also by all those local future homebuyers touring the Parade of Homes. As for National recognition, we have been blessed to put Corpus Christi, Portland, and the surrounding communities on the map. For this last year, as in previous years, the two leading national industry magazines put Braselton Homes in the spotlight. In its 2016-17 report, Professional Builder Magazine, again, ranked Braselton Homes as a “Housing Giant,” and Builder Magazine, again, named us in their “Next 100 List,” a list outlining the largest and most successful homebuilders in the United States. As a native born Corpus Christian, it’s amazing to me to think that our formerly sleepy little corner of the world is now recognized, year after year, for the growth that we are experiencing! Being a part of that growth, as a third generation Corpus Christi builder, is something of which I am very proud. Our beautiful Sparkling City by the Sea is fast becoming the jewel of the Gulf Coast, and while all these awards and recognitions are great to put up on our office shelves, our greatest reward is to see so many families enjoying their New Braselton Home, and Braselton Neighborhood, together. I hope to see you soon in one of our seven fully furnished model homes—which are spread throughout the Corpus Christi Bay Area. To find the home and neighborhood you are looking for, please visit us at braseltonhomes.com. There you can see all our Model Homes as well as the prices for each of our exclusive communities.

Farmer’s Tips for Watering Your Landscape By: Justin Butts Photos: Rachel Benavides
W
e can go for weeks or even months in The Bend without a single good rain. Your plants depend upon you for water. These watering tips will help you maintain a healthy and vibrant landscape.
How Much & How Often to Water:
Water your plants as deeply and as infrequently as possible. Deeply means lower than the lowest level of roots, but no more. Infrequently means to wait until the soil is mostly—but not completely—dried out to water again. “Deep and infrequent watering” maintains the ideal soil moisture and forces the roots to reach for water, which causes the plants to grow more vigorously. Ideally, the top five or six inches of soil should remain slightly moist at all times. This top layer of soil is where most of the healthy bacteria live, and
66 The Bend
these good bacteria require even moisture to thrive. The healthier your soil, the less water your plants will require.
How to Know When to Water: The garden dries out from the top layer of soil on down. To know when to water, use your finger to dig six to eight inches into the soil to check the amount and depth of moisture around the plants. Wait until the soil is mostly, but not completely, dried out. Your soil will tell you exactly how much, and how often, to water your garden. Use the rain function of your garden hose to water the soil at the base of your plants, but not the plants themselves.
Water in the Evening:
If possible, water in the evening. If you water during the morning, or even worse, at mid-day, you will lose a lot of water to evaporation and the soil will quickly dry out. Plants do a lot of their growing at night and need night-time moisture in the soil to optimize their cellular functions.
[the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend]
Mulch and Windbreaks to Conserve Water:
To prevent the soil from rapidly drying out, add a thick layer of native leaf mulch around your plants. Mulch can reduce the water needs of your garden by up to fifty percent. Don’t cut your grass lower than six inches; thick grass shades the soil and conserves moisture. Also, plant a native hedgerow or screen (using sunflower, for example) to protect your soil from the wind.
Drip Irrigation is Ideal:
Install drip irrigation everywhere possible in your landscape. It is inexpensive, easy to install, and can decrease your watering by 80% or more. Call 800-SayRain for professional advice and help on exactly what is required for your landscape. Once installed, watering your plants will be as easy as turning a valve.

What’s Inside When Carlos Cooper felt as if there wasn’t a record store in town that fit his needs, he decided to open one up. Little did he know he would create a place for people to come and feel known.

A Family of Strangers Local record store, Hybrid Records, is doing a lot more than just selling vinyl. By: Kylie Kinnett Photos: Jarred Schuetze
T
he room is flooded with natural light. There is black and red décor (mostly black) and rows after rows of vinyl. Carlos Cooper is sitting behind the desk placed at the center of the store, getting ready for the day ahead. The nature of the store is evident in the name, Hybrid Records. Yet, there is something else to be said about exactly what this place does for the community it finds itself in. Cooper, the owner of Hybrid, opened his doors just about two years ago in November 2015. When asked when he got the idea to open the store, in true artist fashion, his response is, “about a month before it happened.” A passion for music runs in the Cooper family. His father worked in radio for as long as he can remember and his grandfather actually owed his own record store from the 60s to the 80s. So, it comes as no surprise that Cooper himself would one day follow in his family’s footsteps. He knew Corpus Christi was lacking in the record store department. There wasn’t a type of store here he would want to go to. So, creating it himself was the obvious option once plans fell through to help a friend re-open their own record store. While the main motive of the store is, of course, to sell records, there is a certain sense of community that has cultivated itself inside. On any given day, you can walk into the shop and find a number of things happening. Cooper will most likely be helping out customers or tending to the needs of the store. Patrons will most likely be pursuing the
70 The Bend
selection of vinyl or admiring the various local artworks displayed on the shop’s walls. Friends of the shop will most likely be sitting on the leather couch or hanging out in the newly added reading nook (which features a carefully selected curation of books and films for sale). Yet, the thing that stands out amongst your usual record store atmosphere, is there will always be a conversation happening that, most times, includes every single person in the shop.
find something,” Cooper says, “but the amount of bonding that happens on this leather couch, that is something I never could have imagined.” Cooper laughs as he realizes allowing people to come into the store and simply sit and talk might not be the best business strategy, but he knows it doesn’t matter. He knows the importance of having a space for people to feel comfortable in expressing their opinions and views and that is exactly what he has done with this store. So, while yes, Hybrid Records is indeed a record store, it is also an art gallery, it’s a music venue, it’s a resale book and movie shop, and it’s a hangout spot, but most importantly, it’s a cultural gathering space. A place where people in this community can go and feel known.
“The shop is a small space, so if I am talking to someone about a new movie that just came out, someone else in the store, who also has an opinion about that movie, will jump in, and then everyone is involved,” Cooper says. “Whether it is about music, or film, or even something as dumb as memes, if there is a conversation being had, we all become involved.” This environment Cooper has created for his store is one that allows strangers to feel known and where friends can be made. The cultural gathering space that is Hybrid Records, is a place where people—of different backgrounds, different thoughts and beliefs, and different tastes in music—can come together and find a sense of familiarity. While he wanted to open up a shop for people to enjoy the full record store experience and find the niche type of music they were in to, he never imagined it would turn into what it has. “I knew this would be a place me and my buddies could hangout, and maybe a place where people who liked the same things as us could come and

60S MOVIE ART SHOW:
When heading over to the shop to take photos, we happened to stumble upon the artwork still hanging on the walls leftover from a previous show. A may-mester course held at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi mixed the concept of 60s film and screenprinting. The works showcased some of the 60s most iconic films through the students’ own perspective. Just another reason as to why Hybrid Records is more than just a record store.

hen Sophia turned eight she knew a pool party was in order. Floating flamingos were a must have and luau style activities, like learning to hula and glittery body art, were on top of her list! Adding to the chic feel of the Kiera Pool, custom balloon arches topped the gazebos around the pool deck, with palm leaves and floral tucked in. It was a definite WOW factor as guests of all ages were blown away by the balloon décor. Tiny poolside seating was provided with clear acrylic tables, rugs, and fuzzy pillows for the littlest of guests. Tropical food was served from a coastal table, tied with handmade tissue hibiscus flowers and fun tassels strung like a hula skirt. Vegetable

spring rolls, curry chicken kabobs, and fla-mango sticky rice was a refreshing hit for the kids and parents alike. Thai tea and pink lemonade was served as the Spring sun heated things up. The kids had a great time learning their new moves from a hula dancing lesson to doing the limbo with a balloon covered limbo stick. These fun, poolside activities brought smiles to everyone in attendance. Flamingo floss (homemade cotton candy) was spun and packaged for guests as sticky fingers were not an issue. As the party goers left they were handed custom designed sunglasses as a thank you treat. Sophia’s 8th birthday was a definite pool party success, as everyone had a tropical good time!

Sun Safety for Seniors As you age, you may become more adversely affected by heat as your body becomes less efficient at regulating temperature. Corpus Christi Rehabilitation Hospital suggests these tips to protect yourself from a heat-related illness: • Stay hydrated. Drink water often, even if you don’t feel thirsty. • Check your medicines. Some may make you more sensitive to the sun. Ask your doctor. • Wear sunscreen. Apply before you head outside, and reapply often. • Wear proper clothing. Wear light-weight, breathable clothing, long sleeves and a wide-brimmed hat. • Wear sunglasses. Look for those that protect from UVB and UVA rays. • Go indoors. Mid-day sun is the hottest. Plan indoor activities for those times.
If you experience a flushed face, high body temperature, headache, nausea, rapid pulse, dizziness or lack of sweating, it could be a heat-related illness. Get to a cooler spot, drink water, and seek help immediately.

Cool Down with Sweet Treats! DIY Vanilla Ice Cream and Fresh Fruit Popsicles By: Justin & Kayla Butts Photos: Rachel Benavides
H
ave you ever stood in the ice cream section struggling to decide which of the dozens of flavors will be your next favorite? Sometimes none of the flavors seem just right. What if you could design your own ingenious ice cream flavor? Even better, what if you could invent a new ice cream every night? Ice cream, as we know it, was invented in Italy hundreds of years ago. The Italians built huge underground ice cellars lined with stone. During winter, they filled these cellars with ice and snow hauled on wagons down from the mountains. They were able to make ice cream from there during the hot Italian summers. Thomas Jefferson copied the design of ice caverns while traveling in Italy and built his own ice house at Monticello. The bottom of this brick-lined circular ice house was 16 feet below ground. During the winter, workers filled the ice house to the top with ice and snow. Jefferson astounded his guests by serving them ice cream in the heat of the Virginia summer. Fortunately,
we don’t have to go to such trouble to enjoy homemade ice cream and fresh fruit popsicles in The Bend. Once you have the ingredients and tools assembled, it only takes about 20 minutes to make your own homemade ice cream. You can find a perfectly adequate ice cream maker for about $20. This simple vanilla ice cream recipe will get you started. It is merely milk, cream, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract or vanilla bean. From there, let your creativity guide you. Add strawberries, bananas, blueberries, mango, or any fresh fruit that you love. Throw in some nuts, dark chocolate, dried coconut, crystallized ginger, or even your favorite cookie chopped into pieces. You could try a different flavor combination every night of the week! Homemade popsicles will transform your fruit into a frozen delight. You only need a few popsicle molds. They are super cheap and you can find them at any grocery store. Use freshly
Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream Serves 6 Prep time: 5 minutes Inactive prep time: about 30 minutes Ingredients: 2 pasteurized eggs 3/4 cup sugar 2 cups heavy cream 1 cup half and half 2 tsp vanilla or 2 vanilla beans Directions: With a handheld or standing mixer, beat eggs

squeezed lemonade or limeade (or concentrate if you prefer) for the popsicles. Pour the juice or fruit puree into the molds—and this is where the fun begins. Drop a thin slice of cucumber and a sprig of mint into a mold of lemonade for a wild, refreshing flavor combination, or drop in a slice of lemon and a sprig of rosemary or thyme. These popsicles are delicious, refreshing, and beautiful! Experiment with different juices, fresh fruit, and herbs, for flavors to satisfy the most discriminating palate. If you’re having a patio party on a summer evening, be creative and let the tastes of your guests guide the combinations of flavors. You can make your own homemade ice cream or popsicles faster than you can go to the store and buy them…and for a fraction of the cost. These sweet treats are healthier with less than half the sugar, they are more delicious, and you can create exactly the flavors you most love!
for two minutes, or until fluffy. Slowly add in sugar, a little at a time, while mixing on medium speed. Pour in remaining ingredients and mix until fully incorporated. Add ice cream batter to your ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Cook’s note: This recipe includes raw eggs. Adding sugar slows the growth of harmful salmonella but does not eliminate the risk. Children, the elderly, and persons who are immunosuppressed should not consume raw eggs. You may cook the ice cream mixture over low heat until it reaches about 160F to kill any salmonella bacteria.
Lemonade Popsicles Serves 8 Prep time: 5 minutes Inactive prep time: 4 hours Ingredients: 3 cups freshly squeezed lemonade or limeade 1 lemon, thinly sliced 4 sprigs rosemary (about 3” long) 1/2 cucumber, thinly sliced 4 sprigs mint (about 3” long) Special equipment: Two popsicle molds (set of four) Directions: Fill each individual popsicle mold half full with lemonade or limeade. Add one sprig of rosemary, mint, or other fresh herbs to the center of each mold. Place a slice of lemon, lime, cucumber, or other fresh fruit on either side of each herb. There should be two slices of fresh fruit for each mold. Top off each mold with remaining lemonade/lime made. Freeze for about 4 hours, or until completely set. Place molds under warm running water for about 10 seconds to help release popsicles.

A
nyone from the Coastal Bend can attest to this one fact: the summer heat is no joke. With temperatures reaching up to 100 degrees, the usual remedy for this is a big glass of a cold, refreshing beverage. If you’re looking for a new, delicious drink to get you through the heat, it has arrived in the form of Fruit Barn’s Mangonada—and it’s unlike anything else in the Coastal Bend right now. Located in Portland, TX, Fruit Barn has been open since November of 2016. They have a wide selection of snacks and drinks on their menu, from fruit cups, fruit kabobs, corn cups, Mexican candies, along with what they’re most know for: their Mangonada drink.
90 The Bend
[the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend]
The Mangonada, which also comes in two other fruit flavors, is made with blended fresh mango (not pre-made; it is blended as you order!), a little sugar, chamoy, some tajin seasoning, and mango chunks. The cold drink is served in a big cup and with a candied tamarind straw to add to its already mouthwatering mix of flavors. It’s sweet, fresh, and sprinkled with the perfect amount of spice and salt, creating an explosion of tastes that you’ll be craving not just in the summer, but all year round.

long-time local favorite, Surfside Sandwich Shoppe is known for their laid back, surf-themed atmosphere and their wide array of food inspired by different cities and culture—as a result of a lot of traveling from the owners. With a menu that comes alive with different types of sandwiches, salads, tacos, and smoothies, it’s hard to pick a definite favorite. However, one of their best-sellers, the Blackened Ahi Tuna Taco, is what they’re most known for—and for good reason! The delicious tuna comes in two styles, both made with sashimi grade ahi tuna, blackened and seared rare, and wrapped inside a grilled flour tortilla. The regular one is served on top of coleslaw with their homemade spicy taco sauce, while the Baja style is dished out with lettuce (instead of coleslaw), avocado, and pico de gallo, with their homemade Baja sauce drizzled on top.
[the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend]
The taco is perfectly made with the right amount of all the ingredients—the veggies, the tuna, and sauce—in the tortilla. It’s fresh, incredibly tasty, and the Baja sauce creates the perfect mix of spicy and creamy that compliments the tuna excellently. The delicious dish is best paired with one of their adult smoothies, which come in an array of different fruit flavors, and is both healthy and fun! With one of a kind specialties and the kind of atmosphere and culture the Coastal Bend is known for, it’s no wonder Surfside Sandwich Shoppe is and will continue to be, a top go-to food stop for the community.

his time of the year, residents of the Coastal Bend have brushed up on their hurricane preparedness and lingo. We’re so well versed, in fact, that we even casually refer to storms as “a 3,” instead of their official status of a Category 3 Storm on the Saffir/Simpson Hurricane Scale. When the storm hit Corpus Christi in 1919, it was devastating… but there was a rainbow after the storm, and something good indeed came from it. This rainbow took a while though, since we had to wait for Robert Simpson to grow up. In 1919, the Simpson family braved the storm surge, seeking shelter in the Nueces County Courthouse. Water from the bay filled the first floor of downtown buildings, which would take years

to rebuild. Six-year-old Robert rode on his father’s back as they swam through the storm—a storm that would come to fascinate him and fuel his passion for the study of atmospheric science. Decades later, Dr. Robert Simpson (1912-2014) became a pioneer hurricane researcher and the Director of the National Hurricane Center. He has saved an untold number of lives through his most famous research, the Saffir/Simpson Hurricane Scale, which bears his name. This scale is what gives us category ratings that tell us when to hunker down and when to evacuate as the storm approaches. It’s all because of the experience of a child in Corpus Christi who knew he could keep others from experiencing the surprise of a bad storm. The 1919 storm, on the Saffir/Simpson scale, would have been “a 3.”
