This issue is a special one. It highlights seven extraordinary women who not only pour themselves into their family and work, but also into their charity. These seven women are selfless, passionate, and, of course, beautiful. The woman on the cover, Tina Lain, exudes each of those things and brings a certain kind of presence to a room, one you can’t help but admire.

Recovery Times One of the most frequent questions that is asked of me is the recovery time from procedures. This is useful in planning pre-wedding, reunion, holiday etc. While this can vary by situation, most fall into the following timelines. Surgical Cases- In all cases, you can start driving after the pain has reached a level where there is only need for the occasional tylenol or ibuprofen. After liposuction, activity restrictions are for a few days. Breast augmentation, lifts and reductions, gynecomastia resections and facelifts all have a similar recovery time and you can resume activities in a few days and full activity in two weeks. Arm lifts and thigh lifts are also similar to breast surgery. With all of the above, most can return to work within a week. Abdominoplasties and rhinoplasties require a longer recovery but most can return to work in ten days. Strenuous activity can be resumed in 6 weeks. Injectables such as Botox, Juvederm & Restalyne have a down time of a few hours before returning to regular activities, no strenuous activity for 24 hours. For skin procedures, many procedures have no downtime including Facials, Microdermabrasion, Hydro-Facials and Dermaplaning. There may be some slight swelling the day of the procedure. Chemical Peels do not have a down time per se, but depending on the strength of the peel, your skin can be peeling for several days after. Laser Treatments (including Scar revision and hair removal) require no strenuous activity for 24 hours and no sun exposure for up to a week. Microneedling and Photorejuvenation of the skin can have mild redness and swelling 2-24hrs post treatment. The skin will feel tender like a mild sunburn for up to 48hours. These are of course only a small offering of the procedures in our office. Our Licensed Aesthetician Ashley Wendt is happy to give you a free skin care consultation. It is very important to make sure your plastic surgeon is well trained, has completed his/her residency successfully and is board certified. In plastic surgery, a membership in the American Board of Plastic Surgery confirms that your surgeon has successfully completed residency, passed their board exams, and follow the high ethical and professional standards set by the organization. Not everyone is board certified. It is also important to make sure that you have a good rapport with your plastic surgeon and his/her office staff. -Dr. Vijay

Role Models

his summer was pretty epic for our family, and we didn’t go on a single vacation. My wife gave birth to our second daughter, Tatum, back in late May. Needless to say, we have had some sleepless nights, drank unhealthy amounts of coffee, and are learning that life with two children is a little more complicated. I still don’t know how parents who are outnumbered pull it off each day—my hat goes off to you. I never thought I would have a house filled with daughters, but I am loving every second of it. Every day I look at my little girls and I can’t believe how beautiful they are. My oldest turns four this month and I try to remind her each day how special she is. Last week, I was having a conversation with a friend at church, who raised two daughters of his own. We were talking about raising daughters and I expressed how easy I had it because I don’t have the responsibility of raising up boys to become men. I was a little caught off guard when he mentioned that I had a just as big, if not bigger, responsibility of modeling the kind of man you would want your daughters to marry some day. It’s really sweet when my three-year-old says she want’s to marry her dada, but I do hope both of my daughters find a man who will love them and care about them as much as I do. As they grow up, I know they will see models on the covers of magazines and idolize their favorite celebrities. I am fully prepared to spend a lot of money on hair products, make up, and the latest fashion trends in the future. I absolutely want my daughters to know and feel as though they are beautiful. However, I want them to be surrounded by role models like Kim Wilmoth, Lori Galan-Garcia, Anju Ahuja, Susan Klaus, Sherry Rumley, and the rest of the women you will meet on page 38 in this year’s 7 Most Beautiful Women Inside & Out feature. They are all beautiful women, but what makes them special is how much they care about helping people. These women are not fashion models, they are role models. Along with many others in the community, they are the kind of women I want my daughters to aspire to be like when they are older.

Favorite Page

I have participated in a lot of exciting photoshoots over the years, but this one might be my favorite so far. I have to thank Monica McLeod Sawyer and Corpus Christi Patch for allowing us to use The Ritz Theatre, a historic landmark in downtown Corpus Christi. The Ritz was the perfect venue to showcase a local band bringing back a classic rock-n-roll vibe to Corpus and around the country. You know a band is going places when they can pull off wearing suits on a blistering hot day in the middle of summer inside a theatre with no air conditioning...check out The Blind Owls on page 32!

Murals in the Marina Local gallery, K Space, held summer art camps which focused on creating murals. This program gave local youth the opportunity to collaborate with artists Mayra Zamora and Sandra Gonzalez on various pieces of a stunning downtown mural. The mural was formed over the course of five weeks and features beautiful florals and breath-taking coastal

birds. The mural is located atop the Furman Plaza parking garage, which is private. candidate during the process was highly qualified and talented. I had no expectations because there are so many aspects of actually winning the position. Conducting style, rehearsal technique, rapport with the board, the musicians, the audience, the repertoire selected, your experience, social skills, ability to communicate with patrons…all of these factors enter into the final decision. However, after all is said and done, the combination of all of these factors helped the committee in their final decision. I am thrilled to be the recipient of such honor! Your first concert as the Maestro will be on September 30th. What are your feelings towards that as the date approaches? I am so looking forward to being there and standing on the podium that day. There will be a number of exciting events. First, my friend and colleague, pianist Joaquin Achucarro (who was the soloist during my audition) will join me again performing one of his favorite pieces: Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. In addition, tenor Steve Amerson, with local soprano Cassi McNabb, will be singing the best of Broadway and a spectacular opening piece—quite an eclectic program, you will love it!

Where does your love for music come from—have you always had it? My grandfather was a musician, my father was a musician, my sisters are all professional musicians, my brother too…so I guess it is in our blood. I know you have conducted orchestras in several different cities around the country. What brought you to Corpus Christi? I have conducted many orchestras, not only in the U.S., but gratefully, around the world. I have always known of the quality of the orchestra and I was particularly attracted to the professional

approach taken by the search committee. From the clear music director profile sought, the meticulous and often tedious task of going over every one of those 144 applications, the interview process and later on the systematic “tests” while auditioning—everything was first class. Then of course, there was the actual concert at the beautiful and acoustically phenomenal hall…who wouldn’t be attracted to Corpus Christi? What were your expectations during the interview process? The competition level was very high. Every

What is one piece you have always wanted to conduct? I have been very fortunate to have conducted a vast symphonic repertoire, but one piece that I have always wanted to do and not quite able to do it yet is Mahler’ Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection.” I think that is one of the most sublime pieces ever. I cannot wait to do it here one of these days! What does it mean to you to be Corpus Christi’s new Maestro? It means that I have an enormous responsibility to the board, to the orchestra, to the city and to the music. Quite a package, but one that I am eager to take on! Who would you say are your biggest inspirations? My greatest inspiration was my father. His love for music and his family is something I will forever be grateful for—and of course my teacher Anshel Brusilow, former Concertmaster of the Philadelphia orchestra and former Music Director of the Dallas Symphony. It does not get any better than that! What new things do you hope to bring to the table as the Maestro? My desire is to bring Corpus Christi a dynamic, fresh, exciting, and powerful program. Not “diluted” or “watered-down” versions of music, but actually a variety of the very best symphonic music in such a way that our audience (and our musicians) cannot wait until the next performance. I truly believe we can do it!

Did You Know? In the 1940s, a Los Angeles Mexican delicatessen owner named Rebecca Webb Carranza decided to put to use the leftover and misshapen tortilla dough that would otherwise be thrown out. Carranza discovered the discarded dough, cut into triangles and fried, could be the next big thing. The chips were sold for a dime a bag at their El Zarape Tortilla Factory. By 1950, Popular Mechanics magazine referred to Los Angeles as the home of the tortilla chip.

ast year, more than 217,000 women in America were homeless. Domestic abuse, addiction, and sudden changes in family situations often leave someone without a place to call home. But if life takes an unexpected turn, mothers in our community can take comfort in knowing there’s a local organization that exists to help them through their time of need. The Corpus Christi Hope House is a refuge for mothers and their children. Melissa Juarez, the Executive Director at the Corpus Christi Hope House says, “We are a shelter that helps women who are pregnant and moms.” The Hope House accommodates the need for both emergency shelter and temporary housing. But this sanctuary provides much more than just a safe place to stay. Juarez explains, “Our goal is to help them get back on their feet.” This means that the Hope House is home to programs and classes for every stage of life, along with education about pregnancy and raising children. “We also have counseling, mentoring, referrals to other communi-

ty agencies, and mainstream resources.” The Hope House aims to additionally assist with providing necessities like infant care items, and the work of the Hope House does not stop with their residents. Even if they are not staying at the shelter, women can access their resources and receive diapers, wipes, maternity and baby clothes. The Hope House is there for mothers when they are at their most vulnerable state and Juarez urges any woman in need to reach out. “We want them to know they are not alone and that it will be okay.” Juarez then relays the most important thing that the Hope House gives women: “we offer compassion.” The Hope House has been offering compassion and guidance to local mothers for the past 31 years. This organization began in 1986 when one family opened their personal home to mothers in need. Since then, they have aided tens of thousands of mothers. In an average year, the Hope House will assist more than 300 women and children with housing related needs and thousands more will be positively impacted thanks to their outreach programs.

While this nonprofit is for our community, it is also by our community. “Our existence would not be possible without the support of those who participate and donate to the Celebration for Life Fundraiser,” says Juarez. Other ways people can get involved with this non-profit is by donating online, volunteering at the shelter, or adopting a shelter room in order to decorate or furnish it. Any way a person wants to assist with the mission of the Hope House will be contributing to their ripple effect of care. Helping the Hope House is helping women today and saving the generation of tomorrow.

often tell people the theatre was Eddie’s final gift to me,” says Mary Chapa, Executive Board Member of Aurora Arts Theatre. It was Eddie Chapa, Mary’s late husband, who founded and served as the original Executive Head of the theatre. His brother, Charlie Chapa, President of the Board, explains the loveable cunningness in Ed’s plan to get the theatre operating: “He came to my office and told me he wanted to open a theatre on the Southside for the community. I told him it sounded like a risk, to which he replied we would name it after our mother. He knew I wouldn’t be able to say no. When I said ‘let’s do this,’

he reached into his jacket, pulled out an envelope, threw it on my desk and said ‘Good, because I already signed the lease.’” It was instances like this that made Ed all the more endearing. A portrait of Aurora hangs in the lobby—a reminder that love and family are the theatre’s enduring pillars. It took a crew of friends and family to get the place open. After painting walls, installing each and every red-clothed chair, testing lights, and living off burgers and pizza until the place was done, the project was finally completed. Nunsense was decided to be the inaugural show, playing an impressive 9

weekends in a row. Mary described their first run as “everything just [coming] together beautifully: the directors, actors, technicians, everyone who had a part in the show. It just flowed.” A masterpiece seemingly meant to be. After an unexpectedly successful first year of operation, Eddie passed away at the end of the production of Footloose. His unanticipated death rang tragic to his family and the theatre alike, leaving the team skeptical of whether or not they would remain open. In the desire to keep Eddie’s dream alive, Mary, the Chapa family, and everyone at the theatre persevered as a united front. Mary insists this would not have been achievable without the help of her brother in law and his family; yet another display of love. Charlie admires his brother for “changing theatre in this town.” By providing a space for both aspiring and volunteer actors to display and

expand upon their talent, this theatre evolved into a locale for opportunity and community involvement. Charlie mentions, “We don’t require experience, being on stage is where you’ll get all your training.” As a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, places like Chick-Fil-A, Wienerschnitzel, and H-E-B, as well as private donors, regularly support the theatre to help it remain in operation. Aurora’s legacy to this city encompasses that of community. Ed and Mary Chapa were volunteers at the Harbor Playhouse for 10 years; Ed wanted the same community theatre feel on the Southside of Corpus, so he took his dream and rolled with it. In a sense, the theatre is a gift that keeps giving: to Mary, to the volunteers, to our community. To get by with a little help from its friends (& family), all Aurora Arts Theatre needed was love.

he stage isn’t very big. There are four boys, daper boys, whose wardrobe consists of matching, simple black suits with a white button down and a skinny black tie. The bass guitarist, isn’t facing the crowd and begins to stomp his right foot on the ground to a beat that hasn’t started playing yet. Then, the words “she’s a cold hearted woman, a cold hearted woman” are sung from all four of the owls. It’s quiet, the only instrument being played is the guitar. That lyric is repeated four times, the bass guitarist plays a small riff, and then the rest of the band comes in. They are all dancing—each of them is now fully submersed into the song. The show has offically begun.

Corpus Christi has inspired generations throughout the decades to sing about her bay, her people, and her overall vibe. The Blind Owls are grateful to be a part of a city with such a vibrant music history. Just how did they come up with their name you ask? Well, it could have started while sitting by the ocean, or perhaps carried in by the winds, but as fate would have it, it happened a bit more arbitrarily than that. “There is a guitarist/singer in an older band called “Canned Heat” they would call Alan “The Blind Owl” Wilson. I thought The Blind Owls was a cool name,” Jesse recalls. “We wrote it on a piece of paper, among many other names a few of us had, threw them all in a hat, and drew each until there were none left. One fell on the ground at some point. We picked it up at the end and we became ‘The Blind Owls.’” Starting around the fifth and sixth grade, the guys picked up instruments and began finding their

individual rhythms. This youthful start is also where they all came together. “We all kind of met in grade school, except for me and my brother Carlos, who I’ve known my whole life,” Jesse jokes. “I met Josh sometime in the fourth or fifth grade. Then I met Dylan in our sixth grade band class. We were in the percussion section together.” For Carlos it all began the summer of the sixth grade. “I saw a group of friends perform Nirvana’s “Smells like Teen Spirit” and knew I could do better. I was really inspired by my dad as well,” Carlos remembers. “I met Dylan through skateboarding and Josh at our first practice.” At first, the guys got together as just an informal jam band, but as time went on they began to find their beat. Some of the members even found their place by accident. “I haven't been singing for very long,” Jesse explains. When the boys were merely a jam band, they were left without their lead singer

at an open mic gig one night. Jesse, being the only one who knew all the lyrics to the songs, ended up having to take matters into his own hands. “I was basically forced to take on lead vocals, and have been doing it ever since,” he says with a laugh. Dylan reminisces back to the fifth grade, which is when he got his first drum set. While he knew it was something he loved to do, he never imagined it would lead to all the amazing experiences the band has given him. Being in a band, contrary to popular belief, isn’t all playing shows and touring. A lot of it requires discipline. Everyone crammed into a studio—or, in today’s age, maybe just a bedroom with a mic, a computer, and all the instruments one can afford— in order to record. Recording their first EP was no problem, but mixing and mastering, however, took almost two years. “We did it all at home and recorded it in the room we have been practicing in since we first became a band. The hard part was getting us all together to complete it. The LP was easier to complete, as we booked four days of studio time with Dylan Ely here in Corpus Christi at his former studio, The Loop,” Jesse says. “We pretty much were there all day together from 9 AM to 6 AM all four days just working on music. It was definitely a time to remember and a great experience to be able to do nothing but work on music all day and night.” “All Day and Night” happens to also be the name of the band’s album. With the EP pressed on vinyl, there was something much more substantial to receiving the finished product in the mail. Carlos remembers, “I was high on it, but more so at the fact that we were releasing it on vinyl. When the packages finally arrived, I felt like a kid on Christmas. Listening to it all together as a band for the first time is something I won’t forget. It’s pretty cool our music is going to, hopefully, exceed us in terms of time and life.”

The band recently got back from a whirlwind three weeks of touring the West Coast. A GoFundMe was set up in order to raise money to get Dylan’s van in good enough shape to make it to Seattle and back. The four owls (and all of their equipment) loaded up into the van and began on their journey. “It only broke down once,” Josh jokes. “We got it fixed in a day, so no interruptions on that end.” Traveling over 6,000 miles together was both an exciting and learning experience for the guys. They all can agree it is one they will never forget. Now that it’s all said and done, they are most thankful to be back in Corpus Christi where their family, friends, and fur babies reside. “It was an amazing experience,” Josh explains, “none of us had ever toured before so it was exciting getting to experience it with these guys I’ve known my whole life.” Josh mentions the craziest thing to him, in regards to the tour, was how successful it actually turned out. Each of their shows on tour made more money than they had anticipated. “Not saying I didn’t believe in us,” Josh kids, “but a lot of these places we had never played before, so I didn’t expect them to be as packed as they were.” He reminisces on the positive reactions from each of the tour’s stops, and mentions that was probably the best part for him. “Playing to people who have never heard your music and seeing them dance and really digging it was just such an awesome feeling—nothing like it really.” While each member will always remember the journey, they all came out of the experience with a little something special. “Words can’t really do justice to the journey we embarked on and the memories we created in those three weeks together,” Jesse mentions. “The best way to put it, in my opinion, is like a rollercoaster ride. You anticipate it so much until the tour actually begins. Once you’re on it, there’s a lot of things happening, ups and downs, good

times, bad times, and sometimes it may feel like it’s never going to end and you may want to get off. Yet, once it’s over, it seems as if things flew by faster than you thought, and you can’t wait to go back and do it all over again.” Dylan took away that it is always important to be ready for whatever life might throw at you. “We had a lot of bumps along the way, but those bumps made for some really great stories,” he says with a smirk. Josh learned about the type of brotherhood that comes from confined spaces. “I learned about these guys. You think you know someone, but you truly don’t until you’re surrounded by them, and only them, for almost a month,” Josh explains. “I can’t lie and say it was all nice and fun, but we really learned how to deal with one another and I think we all matured from that. I mean, all we had on the road was each other. I’ve always considered those guys brothers, but we reached a new level of brotherhood on tour.” As for future plans, The Blind Owls are planning a few shows at Vino Mio Social Club in September and October, trying to rest up before their next EP release, tour, and a trip to Boston. “We have already finished up our next EP, so we are just keeping it in the vault until further notice,” Carlos mentions. “We have a million unreleased songs no one has heard, but we’re still always writing. We don’t have many shows lined up currently; we’re trying to have some down time between shows. In a few months time, we’ll start booking for our next tour again.” The band enjoys their time in Corpus Christi much like the rest of us mere mortals, surrounded by friends and family. There is no doubt that there are some exciting things on the horizon for The Blind Owls. For now, we remain excited to see where their music takes them.

There is a certain kind of beauty that comes along with vulnerability and truth. Beauty is being true to yourself. Beauty is smiling through the pain life tends to throw at us. Beauty is helping others even when, sometimes, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re the one who needs a little help. Beauty is living your most authentic life. Beauty is simply who you are; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s every fiber of your being. 7 Most Beautiful Women: Inside and Out is a way for women in our community to raise money for the charity they advocate for and bring light to some of the amazing work being done in our city. These women are energized by their passions. They each have a story unique to who they are as a person, and have used that story to push them to better the lives of those around them. Here is to the beautiful women celebrated in this issue, each an inspiration in their own ways and a definite force to be reckoned with. im Wilmoth wears many hats. She is a loving mother, an amazing grandmother, a working woman, a philanthropist, and so much more. She describes her life as never consisting of a dull moment. Kim believes in life and in love, and uses her positive outlook on life, as well as her faith, to get her through the hard times.

She first got involved with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Corpus Christi seven years ago when she was asked to help out with the Casa de Amor event. “I was hooked,” she says, “and I haven’t looked back since.” She finds great joy in visiting the families staying there and being there for them— when they cry, she cries, and when they rejoice, she rejoices.

The Ronald McDonald House is a place where families with ill children can go and feel comfort and love. While they provide a place to stay, they also provide guests with the compassion they need in such a difficult time. In Wilmoth’s mind, it really is a unique place—a safe haven of sorts. “When you have a sick child and have nowhere to go, and you feel alone, you’re not. We are here for you,” she says. Kim is inspired by the lives she has had the pleasure of being a part of, even for the smallest amount of time. “The strength and resilience of people who have gone through loss and still have a smile on their face, that is what inspires me,” she says with a kind look in her eyes. “They keep on smiling and giving themselves unselfishly. That type of love for life is contagious.”

“I

have a note on my desk at work that my son wrote in first grade. It says, ‘Dear New York, I hope you rebuild your towers.’” Lori Galan-Garcia smiles as she talks about her now 23 year old son. He was diagnosed with Autism when he was in third grade, and is the motive behind Lori’s passion for her charity. She credits her love for activism to her dad. “I was always his ride-or-die,” she jokes. “He was always involved with everything and I was always going places with him, so I am sure it rubbed off on me.” She is involved in numerous organizations around town and, even though at times it can be a lot, she knows if you love what you’re doing and it’s helping others, then there is no questioning it. The Autism Spectrum Resource Center is a charity she holds near and dear to her heart. Her involvement began years ago

when her son first got diagnosed, and it has now turned into a passion of hers. “They are a small organization, but they do so much,” Lori says in regards to the center. “They have one walk, and the money raised from that walk is supposed to last them all year, so every bit counts.” She refers to Autism as an extremely hard disability to deal with alone, and is beyond thankful she found this organization when she and her family needed it most. If there is one thing Lori wishes her involvement with the Autism Spectrum Resource Center would do, it would be to educate others. She describes Autism as a very wide spectrum, and mentions that a lot of people don’t realize those who have it can land anywhere on that spectrum. She tears up as she mentions how helpful it was to have a place like this in her and her family’s life. Her love for her children is what gets her to the end of the day, and it has helped her become the beautiful, strong, caring activist she is today. [the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend]

Anju Ahuja The YWCA

nju Ahuja came to the United States 28 years ago. She was submerged into completely new and foreign environments, and she took every challenge she faced head on and with grace. She is headstrong and has an incredible heart. A heart that extends to her husband, her two children, and everyone else she encounters. Anju began her involvement with the YWCA by joining the Finance Committee, and through the years eventually found herself on the Executive Committee as one of the board members. She has chaired multiple events for the YWCA and has done work with their YWTeen Program. The common thread in each of these positions Anju has held is that she has been driven by the women in these programs. “They learn from me, of course,” she says, “but I also learn so much from them. They broaden my world.” The YWCA acts as a safe haven for women who need it. They offer programs to help with various aspects of life to help women get to where they want to be. Anju says her own morals and life goals align with the mission statement of the YWCA and that has helped push her passion for the organization even further. She knows being fortunate enough to volunteer in the first place is an incredible blessing. “The world is not a perfect place,” Anju says, “and I believe instead of complaining, getting frustrated, or overwhelmed, we need to instead try to make this planet a better, happier place by helping those who are in need.”

usan Klaus is insightful, kind, and cares deeply for the world we are in. “We need to reach outside of ourselves, see the need, and make a good effort to leave our corner of the world with more love than we found it. If we all did that, wouldn’t our world be more beautiful?” Her words of wisdom are astounding, truly. Her worldview is so unique and special.

No day of Susan’s comes without chaos—beautiful chaos. She has been married for 14 years to the love of her life. She has six children, three adopted, two biological, and one (sometimes) foster child. There are two dobermans that roam her house, and she is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Agape Ranch. The Agape Ranch provides high quality foster care in South Texas by supporting and equipping foster and adoptive families. “There was a great need for orphan and foster care here in our community that

I was blind to for so many years,” Susan says. “I helped with orphan care around the world, but had no idea of the need that was right here—and once my eyes were opened, I couldn’t ignore it.” At the Ranch, they are committed to investing in and mentoring the foster children of our community and helping our children here become productive members of the place they are from. Susan’s passion for supporting these children and the foster families has helped bring love and compassion to those who need it the most.

Sherry Rumley The Rise School

herry Rumley is just one of those people who instantly touches your soul. Her smile and kind heart light up the room. When you meet her, you can feel the love and grace she exudes. When you speak to her, you can feel her pain, but you can also feel her strength. She is truly like no other—beauty, warmth, a sense of humor, and kindness. She hasn't allowed the circumstances in her life to define her as a person, and that is beyond admirable. Sherry and her wonderful husband love

their children so deeply. They are her inspiration in all she does. Jack, one of her sons, was diagnosed with Down Syndrome at birth and Sherry, being the woman she is, decided if there weren’t ample opportunities for her son here in Corpus Christi, she was going to make them herself. She had heard of The Rise School in other cities, and began researching their models and structure in order to open one here. The Rise School is the city’s first and only school in town dedicated to early education of children with and without disabilities in an inclusive classroom setting. With an amazing staff and programs, they set out to truly provide the best pos-

sible education to every child, regardless of any disability they may have. Sometimes the unthinkable happens, and when it does, you have to decide how to deal with it. Sherry’s baby boy Oliver passed away not too long ago. The thought of losing such a precious gift is unimaginable for those who have not experienced it. However, Sherry had a decision to make. She chose to use this as motivation and hasn't stopped working for the cause she has so much love for. She is a beautiful woman, there is no denying, but her soul has a certain kind of beauty—one you don’t find all too often.

Regina Garcia: The Selena Foundation

appiness is writing your own story. You have to always remember you are the author of your own story. Don’t quit on your story and don’t accept no as an answer.” That is Regina Garcia’s outlook on how to live life and how to live it to the fullest. Her 16-yearold son, Riel, and her husband are her true inspirations, and she credits her time with them as to how she gets through the hard days. Regina has always had a love for helping others. She was born and raised in Corpus Christi and has a deep and unique love for this community. With that being said, it is no wonder she is involved in so many ways in order to make it a better place. The Selena Foundation has made its way to a special place in Regina’s heart, and she has been advocating for them ever since. She was invited to participate in the Fiesta de la Flor Festival and was both overwhelmed and humbled to see what a great impact Selena made through her music, personality, and her energy. Regina mentions how she loves to see Selena’s legacy be continued through the community giving back. The Selena Foundation offers the motivation and resources every child needs to complete their education, live moral lives, love their families, respect human life, and to sing whatever song they were born to sing. “Every child has a gift,” Regina mentions, “and they all deserve the opportunity to explore that gift and share it with the world.” “Be grateful for each of your experiences,” Regina says as she ends her wise words of advice. “Use each of the moments in your life, and let yourself write the ending to your story.” [the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend]

here is something about Tina Lain when she walks into a room. Her presence is strong, bold, powerful. She has an authentic personality and is honest with those she encounters. Her husband and three children are the lights of her life, and she refers to them as her all-encompassing constant source of inspiration. She stands up for what she believes in and fights for her cause with true zeal.

Her father, or as she refers to him, The Cowboy, once gave her a priceless piece of advice. “Not everyone is going to like you…but remember, not everyone matters.” Tina smiles as she has a bit of a nostalgic moment as she relays this piece of advice, and she wholeheartedly agrees with that statement. Family means everything to Tina. After a family member was diagnosed with cancer and later passed, she used the pain as a beautiful inspiration to get involved with the American Cancer Society. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation. Tina refers to the organization as an incredible and inspiring opportunity to honor those who have battled breast cancer, raise awareness about how others can reduce their risk of it, and to raise money in order to help the ACS fight the disease with research. Not only does Tina actively play the roles of wife, super mom, and an inspiring activist, she also has a day job that fits quite nicely into her passion of helping others. At her tattoo studio, Pinnacle Tattoo—which she and her husband own—she has created the business, Gold Dust Cosmetic Tattooing. She helps others feel beautiful again simply by offering cosmetic tattooing which specializes in eyebrows. “Every day we have the opportunity to share our magic,” she says. “My hope is to simply shine so bright others feel my glow.”

One Year Later…

7 Most Beautiful Women is one of our favorite things we do here at The Bend Magazine. Not only do we get to sit down and get to know seven truly remarkable women, but we get to help raise funds for seven remarkable charities. Last year, our winner, Angie Flores, raised an astounding $18,035 for the Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi, Inc. The women are encouraged to raise money all the way up until the end of the night at the event. People continue to donate throughout the night, and at last year’s event, it truly came down to the last minute. A last minute donation of $10,000 was given to Angie’s charity and she was soon declared the winner—talk about a nail biter. So, what has Angie and the Catholic Charities been up to since that night? Well, since this time last year, the charity has celebrated 52 years of providing help and creating hope in the lives of thousands of people. They also moved to a larger facility which has allowed them to expand their existing programs and incorporate new ones. Being involved in the 7 Most Beautiful Women event meant the world to Angie. “It meant I had an opportunity to learn about local charities and the many generous hearts that keep them going,” she says. “I was so deeply honored to be a part of such a lovely evening with so many beautiful women.” She mentions how important the contest was to her charity and how wonderful it is to know that every dollar raised helped a family in need.

Living in a beautiful, sunny area where the sound of the water relaxes you can sometimes provide the perfect note of inspiration. That’s what happened to Stacie and Josh Richline of Water Dog Floating Yoga. This power couple combined a love of fitness and dogs to add their own special flair to a fitness project they had in mind. Stacie, a school teacher, began dabbling in competitive sports at a very young age. She’s traveled and lived all over the world, including Nicaragua, Japan, and Abu Dhabi. However, the year-round outdoor atmosphere in Corpus Christi won her over as the perfect location for an outdoor floating yoga studio. Stacie believes that fitness is very important, yet much more enjoyable outdoors, and she wanted to share this with visitors and residents alike. Josh, a technologically-savvy businessman, is an active sailor, member of the Corpus Christi

Yacht Club, and, with an extensive knowledge of boats, brings water safety expertise to the studio. Josh is also the mastermind behind the creativity of the directions to their location. What is floating yoga? Imagine the eclectic nature of yoga, add water, a fresh breeze, a paddle board, and quirky instructors, and you’ve got Water Dog Floating Yoga! Water Dog has been in business since June 2017, so all current classes are beginner level. Each class begins by clipping the boards to buoys, which allows the client to gain a comfort level on the board while ensuring safety; it also allows the client to assimilate to the movements of the water while gaining stability on the boards. The Richlines pride themselves on a fun and safe environment, so these beginner techniques are a must for each class. There are tons of reasons as to why yoga is extremely beneficial to your health. Frequent yoga increases flexibility and blood flow, builds muscle and bone strength, assists with weight loss, and helps maintain proper posture. These techniques also force your mind and body to relax. Combining all of these benefits, with the

fun experience of doing yoga on a paddle board, is a sure way to stay fit and have fun! Water Dog offers a variety of popular classes including Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga (Level 1 and 2), SUPilates, and PaddleFit. Level 1 SUP Yoga consists of regular yoga techniques on a paddle board. Level 2 SUP yoga is the same as Level 1; however, this class has a more playful vibe, including more daring poses, done by experienced yogis. SUPilates combines mat Pilates and a paddleboard on water. This class allows the client to develop flexibility while strengthening their balance and stamina. The PaddleFit class is a full body core work out on a paddle board, including moves from both yoga and Pilates. Stacie offers reassurance to anyone reluctant to give floating yoga a try. “We will offer modifications to make beginners feel comfortable on the boards,” she mentions, “even if they have never done yoga or Pilates before!” Introductory workshops are also available for first time paddle board users, or those with minimal experience. She serves on the board of the Food Bank of Corpus Christi as well as volunteering time at the ECF Community Center and supporting Fish for Life Ministries, New Life Refuge Ministries, and the Salvation Army. Michelle is perhaps best known for “clowning around” as a Clown who Cares, visiting kids at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Our family mission is always supporting families, helping them to realize the American Dream and have a beautiful home to return to each day, and we thank Michelle for her tireless efforts to support local families in so many other ways as well.

The Ideal Plants for a Native Landscape Three Native Plants to Start Your Native Landscape

ative plants are vastly under-utilized in the landscapes of The Bend. That is unfortunate, because native plants are durable, drought-tolerant, and stunningly beautiful in full bloom. Native plants are the future of sustainable landscapes—we should get to know them better. We asked Native Dave, the top native plantsman in South Texas, to recommend his favorite plants. Native Dave is actually a family team of David, Christy, and Sage Ilfrey. Native Dave has been designing and planting Texas landscapes for thirty years. You can see their work at Palmilla Beach Golf Club, Benjamin’s, and the Marine Science Institute. Native Dave suggested these three plants to bring native color and form to your fall landscape. The dune sunflower offers dazzling color in fall; woolly stemodia provides hardy flowering ground cover, and Gulf muhly is a lovely grass with soft pink blossoms. Here are some tips for growing them.

Dune Sunflower (Helianthus debilis) Plant dune sunflower in sandy or clay-rich soil in full sun with a spacing of 24 inches. Dune sunflower grows into a low mounding shrub about

eighteen inches in height. This plant provides color and structure year-round, with rich yellow blooms in summer and fall.

Woolly Stemodia (Stemodia tomentosa) Woolly stemodia is a soft, silvery groundcover that blooms profusely with tiny purple flowers. It is a full sun plant that makes an excellent groundcover and understory. In the fall, this plant attracts western pygmy blue butterflies by the hundreds. Plant woolly stemodia in sandy or clay-rich soil at eighteen-inch spacing. Lightly mulch around the plants and water them in until they are established.

Gulf Muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaris) Gulf muhly is a native grass that grows in rounded clumps. These plants are particularly beautiful in fall, when they put on lovely soft pink blooms. You can see hundreds of Gulf muhly in Downtown Corpus Christi on the median of Shoreline Boulevard. or years, artists, poets, writers, and everyday people have connected with birds in nature. We see the way our winged companions fly through the air, how they seemingly rise above our human problems, and we feel empowered by them. We are strengthened by their flight. We are amazed by their grace. We are inspired by their beauty. In Rockport Center for the Arts’ most recent exhibit, Birds in Art, the unique relationship between humans and birds is explored and celebrated by a wide array of artists in their beautifully-detailed creations. Since 1976, this prestigious, internationally-curated exhibit has presented the best contemporary art interpretations with avian subject matter. Now in its fifth decade, Birds in Art is recognized around the world as the golden standard for avian art, and has for years showcased the talents of more than 1,000 artists from around the globe.

Luis Puron, the Executive Director for the Rockport Center for the Arts, praised the exhibit, saying it is an honor for the Coastal Bend to be able to feature this unique showcase. “This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for people in Texas, its four bordering states, and Northern Mexico to experience the best avian art in the world,” Puron said. “I am very excited about the possibilities for Birds in Art as an educational resource, a major economic driver, and a source for tourism for our city.” Birds in Art will have a two-month run in Rockport, opening to the general public on September 17, and will go until November 18. Admission is free, and guests are encouraged to come enjoy this special exhibit, which not only showcases international artists, but will also feature a little Lone Star flair. Three artists who live and work in Texas will be featured in the exhibit: James Offeman of Missouri City, Debbie Stevens of Cypress, and Kent Ullberg

Birds In Art Birds in Art is a prestigious, internationally curated exhibit organized by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, in Wausau, Wisconsin. Since 1976, the Museum has presented the best contemporary art interpretations with birds as a subject matter. The jury selects approximately one-hundred works. Sixty of those works migrate to Rockport this fall.

The show will contain two and three-dimensional works, fifty of which are paintings and works on paper, as well as ten sculptures. No matter the subject, from garden and backyard feeder favorites to aquatic birds, or exotic species from around the world, an international cast of artists have employed diverse styles and mediums to interpret birds and their natural habitats.

A Taste of Maryland on the Texas Coast!

Originally from Sweden, Ullberg now calls the Coastal Bend home. With 18 different works featured around Corpus and the surrounding areas, he has certainly left his unique mark on the Sparkling City by the Sea. Jean Giesey, the 2017 President of the Board of Directors for the Center, said this exhibit’s unique works of art are well anticipated after the success of its previous run in 2013. “The upcoming Birds in Art promises to be equally impressive, encompassing many different mediums both whimsical and enigmatic,” she said. “I am so looking forward to Rockport’s opportunity to share in this experience.” Perhaps one of the best parts of this exhibit is its versatility in both showcasing the beauty of nature and transfixing the human mind. According to Puron, there is something for everyone to enjoy in this exhibit, from art lovers, to nature enthusiasts, to bird watchers alike. “Mankind’s fascination with birds, bird symbols, and avian art is universal,” Puron said. “To be captivated by the harmony and serenity of the natural world is part of the human condition. As a promoter of arts and culture, I hope Birds in Art answers questions and creates new ones.”

wispy and fun picnic in the park is how Alexandra Rothschild celebrated her second birthday. A picnic spread welcomed guests with wooden pallets on the lawn, draped with blankets and cozy pillows made for a beautiful, crisp fall November day in the park. Oversized florals and greenery in baskets adorned the pallets, as well a gorgeous charcuterie spreads on marble boards. The bar was set with sparkling waters, fresh squeezed lemonade for the kids, and spirits for the grown-ups. A bow-tied bartender mixed drinks and kept the guests’ thirsts quenched all day! Lunch was served on antique tables covered with greenery and floral wreaths. Chicken salad sandwiches, gourmet hotdogs, and homemade chips and fresh fruit were the fare.

Party activities included sidewalk chalk, water coloring, homemade lavender bubbles, and precious tipis for tiny tea parties. Almond cake draped with fresh lavender was served after singing Happy Birthday to Miss Alex and lemon lavender donuts were placed on stands upon an antique garden cart. No picnic in the park is complete without furry bunnies that tickle the noses of the smallest guests. Fresh carrots and lettuce were placed in baskets for feeding the new furry friends and as bunnies do, they hopped around the party, making for a giggling good time. Guests could help themselves to candy berries in trays that hung from the trees, as well as cotton candy pouches. Favors included watercolors

y all accounts, the best sushi in the world is served on the sidewalks of Japan. As you weave your way through the bustling crowds of the big cities, there are thousands of street vendors with carts, one after another, selling sushi. These street vendors are actually artisan chefs at the top of their game. You might see an ancient old man behind his cart with white hair and deep lines in his face, but his fast expert hands deftly roll your sushi as you watch. It is the best thing you have ever tasted! You also might pass a tiny two-wheeled cart with a serious young female chef rapidly serving nigiri to a line of people who take their order and briskly walk away while eating. The nigiri of this unknown chef is world-class, better than anything you will find at a five-star restaurant back in the United States.

are thousands of chefs on the streets competing for the passing crowds of highly sophisticated diners. If a vendor offers a less-than-spectacular dish, the locals will simply bypass that cart and line up at the next. Each piece of sushi must be its own work of art. A mediocre chef will not last a week on the streets of Japan. Second, the ingredients are of the highest quality. The seafood arrives freshly-caught on boats just minutes away from the sidewalk vendors. Sometimes you can see the boats unloading within view of the cart where a chef is preparing your roll. The fish is so fresh that chefs must often let it sit for a while to develop its flavor. Serving great sushi at home is not nearly as difficult as you think. In this recipe, we will help you make unbelievably good sushi on your first try.

Types of Sushi Maki: Strips of fish, vegetables, herbs, etc., encased in rice and wrapped in nori and cut into slices. Futomaki: What one thinks of as a sushi roll; fish, vinegared rice, and other ingredients rolled in nori. Temaki: Literally “hand roll”; rice and

Uramaki: commonly known as an “inside-out roll”; a maki roll where the fish and vegetables are on the interior of the roll, followed by nori, and lastly a layer of rice. Sashimi: Raw slices of fish served on their own or with a sauce or vegetable. Nigiri: A slice of raw fish on top of a mound of rice, often with a small dab of wasabi. Sushi rice should be sweet and stick together when pressure is applied--never slimy, mushy, or al dente. Sushi rice can easily be prepared via stovetop in minutes.

mediocre sushi, you know the chef cut corners on the quality of the ingredients— there is no hiding it. The first and most important ingredient is rice. In a typical Japanese supermarket, there are more than 200 varieties of rice on the shelves. Even a tiny gas station will sell twenty or thirty types of rice. We have several Asian markets in The Bend that feature authentic sushi rice and other must-have ingredients. Sushi-grade seafood can be found at a good local fishmonger. Gulf shrimp and flounder are excellent in sushi. Ask for sushi-grade tuna, salmon, roe, squid, and shellfish. Sushi-grade seafood is frozen at a very low temperature to help ensure the fish are safe to consume raw. Sushi is an art form best practiced at home. Your only competition is the last roll you made, and each one just gets better. This is an art you will love learning to master.

Sushi Rice Makes: about 4 rolls Prep time: 3 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Ingredients: 2 cups uncooked short- or medium-grain rice 2 cups of water, plus more to rinse rice ½ cup rice vinegar ¼ cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon salt Directions: In a colander, rinse rice with cool running water while stirring and agitating with your fingers until water runs clear. Place rice in a 4 quart pot and cover with 2 cups water. Bring water

to boil over high heat, stirring occasionally. While water boils, combine vinegar, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Stir until sugar and salt are mostly dissolved. Cook the rice in boiling water for 2 minutes. Cover rice and move pot to the smallest burner on your stove top. Continue to heat rice on the lowest heat setting, stirring once to prevent the bottom layer of rice from burning. Remove from heat once rice has absorbed all the water. Let the rice cool to about body temperature. Add vinegar mixture to cooked rice and stir until liquid is absorbed, taking care not to mash rice. Cover with a damp towel to keep rice from drying out with preparing sushi.

Gulf Shrimp Uramaki Makes: 1 roll Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 2 minutes Ingredients: ¼lb raw gulf shrimp, peeled and deveined Heavy pinch salt ½ tsp Chinese five spice

1 sheet of nori (dried seaweed) 1/3 cup prepared sushi rice ¼ avocado, thinly sliced ¼ cucumber, seeded, and thinly sliced length-wise ¼ red bell pepper, seeded with pith removed, thinly sliced length-wise 1/8 mango, thinly sliced length-wise 1 scallion with end removed 2 sprigs fresh cilantro Optional: 2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds or roe to garnish Directions: Place 2 cups water, salt, and Chinese five spice in a small pot over high heat. Add shrimp to the pot once it begins to boil and cook for about a minute, until shrimp turn pink. Remove shrimp with a slotted spoon and reserve to the side. Cover your sushi mat with a sheet of cling wrap. Place a sheet of nori on your mat, with the longest side facing you. Spoon rice onto the nori. Wet your hands with water and using your fingers spread rice to cover the surface of the nori leaving only the top ½” uncovered. About two inches from the bottom of the roll, place avocado end to end in a horizontal line across the length of the nori. Repeat with

remaining ingredients, including reserved shrimp. Pick up the end of the bamboo mat closest to you, and while securing the inner components with your fingers, roll the mat away from you with a fair amount of pressure. Continue to roll the mat away from you, adjusting mat as necessary. Leaving cling wrap intact around the formed roll makes the roll easy to cut. Using a wet, sharp knife, cut the roll into 1/2” sections. Remove the cling wrap and garnish with sesame seeds or roe if desired. Serve roll with pickled ginger, wasabi, soy sauce, and spicy mayo (see recipe).

Spicy Mayo Serves: 8 Prep time: 2 minutes Ingredients: ¼ cup high-quality mayonnaise (recommend Duke’s) 1 tbsp, plus 1 tsp sriracha sauce Directions: In a small bowl, mix mayo and sriracha well. Add more sriracha if desired.

There are three types of tequila, depending on how long they’re aged. The silver one is normally not aged at all, the reposada is tequila that’s been aged for more than two months, and the añejo is any tequila aged past nine months! The longer the tequila’s been aged, the more flavorful it is.

he Italian restaurant opened their doors in April of this year and in that little time, have already gained themselves regulars and customers who swear by their unique and authentic Italian taste—some have even called the restaurant Corpus’ “best kept secret.” Their menu boasts of wide selections of salads, Italian subs, homemade pasta, and Neapolitan and gourmet pizza. With so much to offer, their specialties don’t just end with one dish. Their seafood combo is a combination of sautéed shrimp, clams, mussels, and calamari over homemade linguine pasta in red sauce. The sauce is light, which allows you to taste every bit of the pasta, and has a great and distinct tangy flavor that complements the fresh seafood perfectly. Another specialty dish they have, which is also their best-seller, is the Pasta Trio. The dish has lasagna, chicken parmesan, and

fettucine Alfredo, all homemade from the pasta to the sauce, and all on one plate! The dish is perfect for the customers who just want to try everything. They also have vegetarian options, like their scrumptious Eggplant Parmesan. Café Italia also serves mouth-watering desserts. Their Italian Cream Cake, Blackforest Cheesecake, and Tiramisu are just some of the sweet options— all of which, much like the rest of their menu, will have you talking about it for days. With its authentic taste, excellent customer service, and passion of the people behind it, it’s no wonder Café Italia is rapidly becoming a local favorite.

efore shopping malls and stores lined the SPID corridor, Corpus Christians looked downtown for most of their shopping needs. Moritz Lichtenstein arrived in Texas in 1857 from Germany, and by 1874 he opened Lichtenstein’s department store in a rented space. As shoppers lined the streets to shop downtown in the decades that followed, Lichtenstein’s expanded as the city grew and soon became the city’s largest department store. After its original location, it occupied another two locations before building its final store, which opened in 1941 at Chaparral and Lawrence. Visits to Lichtenstein’s weren’t simple trips to just drop in quickly to pick up a new shirt or dress. To modernize the experience in 1911, the third location (Chaparral and Schatzel) boasted

the city’s first elevators and was one of the first with a sprinkler system. The final store stood at 80,000 square feet and was such an icon downtown that it was even featured on postcards, stating the store was designed to “make every-day shopping a thrilling experience.” The mezzanine featuring a tea room was a popular lunch destination. It also served as a centerpiece of the popular Christmas decorations known as Peppermint Lane, a favorite memory for many shoppers. This family-owned company was an anchor of the downtown experience until the 1970s. Today, this building is gone, but its original architecture is mirrored in the new construction of The Cosmopolitan apartments, built in its place.
