Save Your Natural Tooth!
I
Has your dentist told you that you need root canal treatment? If so, you’re not alone. Millions of teeth are treated and saved each year with root canal, or endodontic, treatment. Watch our videos at southtexasendo.com to learn more!
nside the tooth, under the white enamel and a hard layer called the dentin, is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, and helps to grow the root of your tooth during development. In a fully developed tooth, the tooth can survive without the pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it. Contrary to jokes about the matter, modern endodontic treatment is very similar to having a routine filling and usually can be completed in one or two appointments, depending on the condition of your tooth and your personal circumstances. You can expect a comfortable experience during and after your appointment. We also provide nitrous, oral and IV sedation for the anxious patient.
If you are given a choice between root canal treatment
or tooth extraction, always choose root canal treatment. Dentistry has yet to produce a denture, bridge or implant that looks, feels and functions as well as a natural tooth. Never choose extraction because you think it will be quicker! Endodontic treatments generally require one to two visits lasting less than an hour each. An extraction requires one visit, but the denture, bridge or implant will require several additional visits with your dentist. Never choose extraction because you think it will be cheaper! When a natural tooth is extracted, it must be replaced with an artificial tooth to prevent other teeth from shifting, and to prevent future dental problems. The cost of a denture, bridge or implant, plus the extraction, often is higher than the cost of an endodontic procedure that would save the tooth for years to come. Most dental insurance plans cover endodontic treatment.
Saving the natural tooth with root canal treatment has many advantages such as: • Efficient chewing • Protects other teeth from excessive wear or strain • Natural appearance • Normal biting force and sensation so you can continue to eat your favorite foods • Limits the need for costlier, ongoing dental work
Call South Texas Endodontics: We want you to have the best experience possible in saving your natural teeth. Dr. Anthony, Dr. King (Board Certified) and Staff are here to answer your questions. If you have any questions about root canal procedures, you can visit our website at southtexasendo.com or call us at 361-992-7871. 8 The Bend

This month, we wanted to define the word community. We wanted to find the places people are gathering in our various communities that make up the Coastal Bend and tell their story. The Downtown Farmer’s Market has been a staple community gathering space for years. Strangers and friends alike assemble here every Wednesday to support local vendors, buy fresh goods, and converse among neighbors. With our cover, we wanted to conceptually show how beautiful a gathering space is, both literally and metaphorically! Shot by Rachel Benavides.

APRIL / From The Desk Of
What stuck with you the most while working on the April issue? Justin Butts,
Contributing Writer
For our Farm to Table recipes, we featured the brunch dishes of Shakshuka and mushroom chêvre crepes. Shakshuka originated in Lybia and is now one of the most popular dishes in Israel. Crêpes come from the other side of the Mediterranean in France. What stuck with me most was how much we have in common with these folks from the other side of the world. We all love good food shared with friends and family.

It’s always a challenge to stay ahead of the game and working for a magazine is no different. Staying months ahead of the curve is where your mind is at and it’s a constant think tank to prepare articles and layouts for months you may not even be ready to think about. Preparing articles for the summer when you are living in winter is a reality but a fun one when you are able to showcase your thoughts in a visual way and it keeps me on my toes.
Brynn Osborn,
Contributing Photographer
I had such a fun time shooting the Style section this month! It was a familiar crew with Jarred and Catey and we all had a blast on the tennis courts. I loved collaborating with one another to bring to life the unique looks we were going for. This has by far been the coolest shoot I’ve gotten to be a part of for The Bend!

APRIL / Letter From The Publisher
bor’s yards. Sometimes our neighbors would be outside and we would wave or strike up a conversation. It was by far the most interaction we had with each neighbor since moving into our home nearly four years ago. Eventually, property lines were settled upon and the fences were rebuilt or mended. Life went back to normal. I have nothing against fences, but I realized how important it is to not let them keep us from interacting with our neighbors on occasion. Isolation can seem like the easy route to take, but it is never rewarding. Nikki Riojas, owner of Thirteen and Market, discovered this from her experience moving from one new city after another. Upon moving to Corpus Christi, she decided to reach out to other women entrepreneurs in an effort to connect, encourage, and partner with each other. She recently launched a new non-profit organization called The Women’s Entrepreneurs Society of Corpus Christi. You can read more about it on page 44.

In this month’s issue, we wanted to highlight just a few ways neighborhoods are forming into communities around the Coastal Bend. Community can form around high school sports, art, businesses, causes, churches, or Barefoot Mardi Gras Parades. People are realizing that life is better together.
ood fences make good neighbors,” states the famous line from Robert Frost’s poem, “Mending Wall.” I’ll leave the exact interpretation of the poem to the literary juggernauts in academia, but I get the impression that Frost, or the protagonist in the poem, disagrees with his neighbor’s way of thinking.
Although the fences are back up in our yard, they didn’t stop my four-year-old from delivering baked goods to some of our neighbors. One neighbor, an elderly gentleman with Alzheimer’s Disease, always pulls a silver dollar out of her ear when we visit. It is the highlight of her day. Moments like these make me realize that we can be good neighbors with or without good fences.
I was reminded of this poem in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. All of the fences in our backyard collapsed and, for a good while, we could see directly into each of our neigh-

The Farm to Table column, on page 84 this month, is always so beautiful, I sometimes take it for granted. Not only is it one of the longest running columns in the magazine, it has been one of the most popular as well. It always get excited when I hear about readers making the recipes in their own home. I am grateful for Justin and Kayla Butts who, in spite of rebuilding their Rockport farm, are still able to contribute something delicious month after month. Also, I have come to realize that Rachel Benavides has a God given talent for food photography.

In this month’s style section we collaborated with Kimberly Rios of METROPOLIS Culture to bring you a handful of chic vintage looks inspired by a Weekend at Wimbledon. From the effortlessly posh street fashions, to the wardrobe of players themselves, we dove into a cloud of clean whites and versatile textures and came up with a breath of fresh air.

statement When The Bend Magazine asks if you would like to style a shoot for the next issue, you immediately say YES! Only later does it sink in that the “white” theme is totally out of your comfort zone. My personal collection of vintage clothing is filled with bold prints, patterns, and colors. Working with neutrals allowed me the opportunity to play with texture, layers, and natural materials. It was definitely a challenge, but I am so pleased with the end result. –

Our friends over at Archer Soapworks & Apothecary have taken an exciting new step in their journey, a permanent storefront! Their brick and mortar is located in South Park Plaza on Weber and South Padre Island Dr. This new permanent location will have everything you know and love about Archer, but now allows the business to hold workshops and provide a space for pop-ups featuring a variety of local vendors. The shop will also be home to Grounded Powder Coating, owned by Gabe Rocha, which specializes in customizing stainless steel tumblers, wine glasses, and even baby bottles! on’t mess with Texas beaches, is the mantra of the Surfrider Foundation, a movement where local surfer activists are able to find their voices. After witnessing the mass plastic pollution plaguing the ocean’s ecosystem, the grassroots organization started bringing attention to the cause through perseverance and direct action.
With a clear vision for the future of our ocean conditions, the Surfrider Foundation has been growing its chapter in the Coastal Bend area since 2005. They aim to create a more sustainable atmosphere and healthier ocean life. Cliff Schlabach, Chair and Neil McQueen, Vice Chair lead the local movement. “(As surfers) we’ve seen a lot of things. We’re actually, literally immersed in the environment,” McQueen says. “That fires us up to want to make change and to change the environment.” The foundation focuses on multiple programs to encourage efforts for a cleaner coast, including its yearly Leo Garza Surf Camp for the Disabled, storm drain cleanups, and beach cleanup programs. The introduction of the Ocean Friendly Restaurant program is one of the newer

building blocks the Surfrider Foundation has laid since the inception of its South Texas chapter. “If you’re using less waste when eating, you’ll have less waste on the beaches,” explains Holly Thomas, Outreach Coordinator of the local Surfrider team. This is how the foundation introduces the Ocean Friendly Restaurant program, which aims to “focus on one restaurant, one customer at a time.” This plan calls attention to how restaurant products, such as Styrofoam cups and plastic straws, have begun drastically affecting marine stability. To be certified as an Ocean Friendly Restaurant, establishments must fulfill a certain number of criteria to reduce their environmental impact. Participating restaurants can meet these standards by using biodegradable to-go boxes, not giving out a straw unless requested, and switching to more efficient energy and water systems. In turn, reducing waste levels can result in better-cost efficiency for restaurants involved in the program. “We’re directly on the coast here,” says Christie Irps, Coordinator of the program. “What we’re eating, all the products that we’re using: the
By The Numbers According to the Surfrider Foundation’s website, approximately 100 billion plastic bags are used annually in the United States, and 500 million plastic straws are used daily. The Ocean Conservancy tells us that plastic has been found in more than 60% of all seabirds and in 100% of sea turtle species because these creatures mistake plastic for food.

plastic bags, the straws, the Styrofoam togo boxes … it’s so close, everything ends up right out in the water.” The greatest appeal of introducing restaurants to minimal waste products is the creation of demand for said products. Eventually these alternative products will become less expensive and more mainstream, smoothing the way for restaurants to transition to a less wasteful business model. With a goal of 10 to 15 networks within the first year, the first restaurant in Corpus Christi, as well as Texas, to fully commit to the program is the Texas State Aquarium’s Pepsi Shoreline Grill. This establishment not only follows the recommended criteria but also all 10 of the potential criteria. Members and potential members of the South Texas Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation continue to join in brainstorming new ways to push for ocean protective services. The group meets the last Monday of every month from 6-8pm at Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi.

Breast Rejuvenation Breast rejuvenation is one of the more commonly performed procedures and can include implants, lifts, reduction, or a combination of the above. A breast reduction always includes a lift and involves removal of breast tissue to improve neck, back and shoulder pain. A lift is done mainly for aesthetic reasons to return the nipple and breast tissue to its appropriate position. Breast implants are placed to increase the volume of the breasts, specifically in the upper portions of the breast. Sometimes a lift with implant is needed if there is excess skin, a low nipple and diminished volume in the upper chest. While risks are increased with this combination, recent advances have allowed us to offer this procedure with a very high success rate. There are different types of breast implants that are best in different circumstances and the same is true for the location of the implants. The new Managing Director of the Harbor Playhouse has big dreams and goals for the theatre By: Alexis Mays Photos by: Jarred Schuetze
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN CORPUS CHRISTI AND WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE HARBOR PLAYHOUSE? I’ve
been here since November [2017]. I actually arrived the opening day of A Christmas Carol. When I was being interviewed in October, I knew that was a very important production they do every year, so I wanted to make sure I could be here for opening night. It was incredible. The production exceeded my expectations. But I think the strongest impression I got from that night was the community. Everyone seemed to know everyone; either they knew someone in the show, or they knew someone in the audience, or they’d been to the theater before…it was a great first impression.
WHAT ARE SOME GOALS YOU’RE HOPING TO ACCOMPLISH THIS YEAR? Well, for one of goal we’re actually already half way
there. I realized when I started here we only had 143 ticket season holder memberships. But we have 6,000 seats for each show so we should have at least 1,000 membership holders. So literally, on the second day I was here, I got on stage before a production started and said, ‘Hey, I’m Bob, I’m the new guy, and by the way, ‘why aren’t you a member?’ And we sold 450. We’re also opening the studio theater, which is their small black box that seats

120 people. It was open five years ago, but between some rain and electrical damage, it closed. So that’s being repaired now and should be open this fall. WHY DO YOU THINK THE HARBOR PLAYHOUSE IS IMPORTANT TO THE COASTAL BEND? One of the reasons The Harbor Play-
house tries to do shows with big casts is because we’re totally open to everybody. We don’t do small productions here. Annie, for instance, has 52. A Christmas Carol had 60. Grease has more than 30. We want every person who has a dream or passion for being on stage to come and audition. That's why it's important.
IS THEATRE SOMETHING YOU’VE ALWAYS BEEN PASSIONATE ABOUT? Yes. The first show I did was in 1973. I’ve done it pro-
fessionally; I lived in New York, have done national tours, dinner theatre, and at one time for about five years, I owned a professional company in Jacksonville, Florida. And all of that gave me the experience to literally walk right in here [at the Harbor Playhouse] and start shaping it and making it even better. It was the fastest transition I’d ever made in my life. I have a dream job, and it’s absolutely wonderful. I’m so glad to be here. The Harbor is a wonderful place, and Corpus is a wonderful town.

What makes a community? Maybe it is the neighbors you
wave hello to in the mornings. Perhaps it is the sidewalks your children grew up riding their bikes on or the local barista who knows your coffee order by heart. A community can take many forms, because where there is fellowship there is community. That is why within a community there are gathering spaces—places where people come to feel known and safe. So, what do an art center, a farmer’s market, a football stadium, and a local park all have in common? They allow common interests to be shared among others. They turn strangers into family. And most importantly, they bring people together.

or almost five decades, Rockport Center for the Arts has served as the community’s gathering
space. Friends and strangers have gathered here for years and found common ground in a place they felt safe. Residents and tourists alike come here and find, no matter their differences, they have a common thread that brings them together. That thread is art. “Art has the power to express the agony and the ecstasy of the human condition when words fail us,” Luis Purón, Executive Director of the Rockport Center for the Arts, says as to why he thinks art brings people together in such a profound way. One of the things Luis is most proud of when it comes to the center is how they have always been able to offer a safe space for people to gather and exchange ideas about art completely free of charge. With Hurricane Harvey tearing through Rockport last August, so many of the town’s community gathering spaces were destroyed. But, with the Center for the Arts being the heart of this art community, they knew bringing people together was needed more than ever. In late September, they had their first reception following the hurricane at the Art Museum of South Texas.

“For many of our patrons, it was the first time they were seeing one another after the storm,” Luis says. “You could feel the energy in the room.” The people needed that; they needed their gathering space. The Center re-opened their doors on December 2, 2017, at their temporary Austin St. location, and each of their following major receptions were attended by well over 200 people. That offered Luis hope, as well as proof that what they offer continues to be valid. From their early years at the Estelle Stair Gallery, to the 35 years they spent growing the center at the Bruhl – O’Connor home, and now their resurgence in downtown Rockport, there has always been one constant—their supporters. What this says is, no matter how the structure they congregate inside looks, a community will gather.

nclusive, supportive, and regenerative are words that come to
Aislynn Campbell’s mind when
thinking about what a community
gathering space means. Aislynn, the GROW Local South Texas Executive Director, knows a thing or two about a gathering space.
The Downtown Farmer’s Market,
an initiative led by GROW, strives
to create a space where people can authentically trade energies, ideas,
and life with one another. However, Aislynn knows successful commu-
nity spaces usually work on various levels. “The local, healthy food
available doesn’t create the community—that’s just a reason for people with common interests to gather in the same place,” she says. “With
added layers of art, food, music, and the goal of making Corpus Christi a healthier, better place to live,
The Farmer’s Market becomes a
one-of-a-kind gathering point which attracts a very diverse segment of the population.”

You can catch these local vendors at the Farmer’s Market (vendors vary per market):
On any given Wednesday at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, you will find rows of vendors with their handmade goods, farmers with their freshly grown produce, families strolling the booths looking for the weeks’ groceries, kids laughing, and strangers asking to pet other
strangers dogs. This scene creates a sense of community that allows people to gather in one place and feel accepted. Not only does the
Farmer’s Market bring people of the immediate community together, but it also traverses broader communities.
“Successful Farmer’s Markets become the hub for many intersect-
ing communities,” Aislynn says. “The collusion of those communities is what makes it so special.” And, she’s right. The residents and the
tourists, the live music fans and the farmers, the yoga students and the chefs, the art enthusiasts and the families—they all come together in a celebration of life and community.
Aislynn’s final thoughts ring true to the overarching theme of the importance of a community gathering space. “They are essential. They are life affirming. Their presence throughout history suggests that having gathering spaces is as important to the human race as food, air, and
water. They are the marketplace of everything from actual goods and

The stands are filled to capacity, the streets are lined with cars, and the entire town is shut down, except for the Sonic across the way. It’s your classic Friday night lights scenario. You can feel the school spirit exuding from the stadium the moment you step on its grounds. However, the reason this football complex is so important is not because of the games that have been won there or the young students it has helped shaped, but the way it has brought people together. Regardless of your political views, religious affiliation, race, language, 42 The Bend
or culture, for one night, under those bright lights, everyone in attendance becomes a family. “This stadium is a magical place where you can ignore the hustle and bustle of life for a few hours,” Dawn says. “We high five strangers and then float out of the stadium back to our normal lives, ready to conquer anything.” This feeling of camaraderie is what makes this gathering space such an important part of the community. It connects people with others who they otherwise might not have ever met. “This place, this gathering space, it opens up your mind and heart to ideas that you might not have ever entertained,” Dawn says. Your community helps shape you into the person you become, and this couldn’t be more true for the stadium. People gather here to be a part of something great. As Dawn describes it, it is the epicenter of the town. “Sit in the stands,” she says with a sense of pride in her eyes. “You will hear cars driving by honking in support. You can’t avoid this gathering space. It’s front and center of this town, and people can’t help but want to be a part of it.”

Ladadi LLa ies An organization revolved around women supporting women
ikki Riojas, owner of Thirteen and Market, a home décor and lifestyle brand, knows how it feels to move to a new city with a young family and not know anyone. She has done it twice.
Her first such experience occurred after moving from Nebraska to Louisiana. In Nebraska, she had not only built a career in corporate marketing but had also started a successful online custom jewelry and clothing business. In the meantime, she got married and had her son. Uprooting to a new state and unfamiliar city led to a sense of isolation. Fortunately, Riojas soon discovered a local women’s entrepreneur group comprised mostly of out-of-state transplants. The most important thing to Riojas was the camaraderie the women shared. Each month they would meet and talk about their businesses and what they were doing at work. She went from not knowing a single person to meeting new friends with whom she still maintains contact.
When she and her husband, Andrew Riojas, moved to Corpus Christi over three years ago, her previous experiences helped her adjust quickly. She began reaching out to women business owners to form a group similar to the one she had joined in Louisiana. The Women’s Entrepreneur Society of Corpus Christi, which became an official nonprofit organization in February, was born after having its first meeting in July 2017. “We started talking about the Women’s Entrepreneur Society about a year ago. You know when you move to a new place, it’s just kind of overwhelming. And you add working from home into that and having a little kid,” Riojas says. She goes on to reflect on her memories of the Louisiana group. “It was just a casual group, but it was specifically for women in business who were not from the area. So, when I came here, I already had that mindset. That to feel more comfortable in a place I don’t know anything about, I need to connect with people. I love the connection aspect of it. So, I met a couple of women who also ran businesses and they are fantastic.”
Riojas’ new road was not without bumps. At first, many of the women she encountered were too busy to organize a group. However, she met one woman who owned a retail shop and another who worked out of her home. Riojas and her new friends decided to find a few more women business owners they liked and respect-

ed and whose products they admired. “I thank social media for a lot of these things. I already had a presence on social media through my business, so I was able to connect with a number of women-owned small businesses,” Riojas says. “We had no idea who each other were, but we were conversing and sharing each other’s products on social media.” Riojas suggested the group should find a day to get together once a month. At the first July meeting, before Hurricane Harvey, there were ten people. They started a private Facebook group and started adding people. The rule was that members had to be women and a business owner in town. It didn’t matter if the business was online, brick and mortar or both, but a member must have built or founded their company. “It was really exciting to see how easy this was. These women, who are amazing in everything they do all day long, took time to sit and share and talk about their struggles, their exciting events that they have, and how we can partner with one another,” Riojas recalls. She has seen collaboration after collaboration as the

group shares customers, contacts, and products. “We are creating custom products for one another to sell. It’s definitely been beneficial for a storeowner because we are able to bring in revenue and help other small businesses do the same. But, we have this connection with everyone. We now have thirty in our group,” Riojas states. She wants to make people aware that the Women’s Entrepreneur Society is an available resource, regardless of whether someone already has a business or whether they want to start a business. “If you don’t know where to start, maybe you aren’t doing it correctly quite yet. Let us help you get the resources to get you set up correctly. If you’re not taking sales tax yet, let us show you how can do that. It’s easy. We’ll provide you resources, and then you can be an active member in our group,” Riojas says. Riojas invited Samantha Thurman, who owns an Etsy-based jewelry business, Alpacas Some Wine, to join. The two met at a pop-

up store where Thurman was selling some of her jewelry a few months ago. Riojas walked Thurman through what was needed to start up a business. “She gave me advice, and she said I needed to raise my prices. She said, ‘your time is money,’ and Nikki was adamant that I had to pay myself,” remembers Thurman.
“The organization was really needed. A successful business needs to know their surroundings. It’s a safe place to ask questions for the ones who don’t know,” Madsen states.
Nancy Madsen, who owns the local do it yourself craft store, Oh My Goodness Boutique, serves as board vice president and treasurer of the organization. She sees the need for a resource like the Women’s Entrepreneur Society. “There’s not much out there for a woman business owner locally other than the Chamber of Commerce,” says Madsen, who is in the process of expanding her store and more than doubling its space. She says 90% of her customers are women who have home-based businesses making things, and they have no idea they have to pay taxes or how to market themselves. Madsen, who has a business background, explains that when she first started her business, she had plenty of questions but no one to ask. “The organization was really needed. A successful business needs to know their surroundings. It’s a safe place to ask questions for the ones who don’t know,” Madsen states. To be considered for membership, the business must be legally established to do business in the state of Texas. According to Riojas, the business owner will likely get access to about sixty women in Corpus Christi and the surrounding area that are willing to grow and work together. 48 The Bend
The memberships are tiered. The Founders Membership is for those who have been in business for a certain amount of time and who meet each month. The General Membership, with meetings four times a year, is set up for educational purposes. For young women or college students who are thinking about starting a business of their own, an Associate Membership is available. Riojas wants to keep business talent in Corpus Christi.
“I think people hear the 'shop small philosophy' and they don’t really understand that when you buy from a small shop, your money stays in this town. Your money goes to fix those roads and goes to the education system. Your money stays here. So, we’re grateful. We obviously love every dollar that comes in a small shop, but we also know that the benefits of that are longer lasting, and they impact the entire community,” Riojas explains. Among the many benefits of an organization like this existing, probably the most exciting one is to see women business owners banding together instead of only seeing each other as competition. They build one another up, cheer each other on, and use other group members as resources to further their businesses. Where there could be rivalry, there is love, and that is priceless. One Day at a Time How one local man didn’t let the unthinkable stop him from living his life By: Marina Riker Photos by: Rachel Benavides
“I was on my last class, managerial economics, and I had two weeks to go (when) I had the stroke,” he explains. He spent more than a week in the hospital, but near the end of his stay, that slight movement in his thumb provided much needed encouragement. “From that point on, it was like I’m going to get back,” Romans recalls. “But it’s going to take a lot of failure.” Romans and his wife have seven children. Six of them, spanning from age 10 to 19, were in their Portland house when he had the stroke. During the weeks that followed, his family took him to countless physical therapy appointments. In the beginning, even talking was difficult. He tried relying on technology, but that didn’t always work. Two months after the stroke, Romans was able to play golf. “Weak golf,” he jokes. Fast-forward a year later, and Romans can walk several miles, lift weights, and speak normally. People who don’t know him would never guess he’d had a stroke. Despite his medical hardships, Romans maintains an upbeat attitude and unrelenting gratitude for even the smallest signs of progress. He credits the support of everyone around him for his comeback, especially his physical therapists, family, and friends.
I
“It’s not every day you have gains,” says Romans. “But it’s the constant attempt at getting better that brings about growth.” t wasn’t until his eighth day in the hospital that Paul Romans, 51, could finally move his thumb. His wife captured that first glimmer of hope on video.
Romans’ health crisis began on a February night in 2017. He awoke to find himself numb on the right side. His wife called an ambulance to take him to the hospital. Doctors determined that a stroke had caused his paralysis. Romans never expected to have a stroke. He lost his full-time job as an oil field manager in August 2016. Along with his job, he lost his health insurance. He was working as a consultant and studying to get his master’s degree in business when the unthinkable happened.
56 The Bend
Even though he didn’t have health insurance, the hospitals and physical therapists worked with him, and his church also pitched in to help. In spite of the stroke, Romans still earned his college degree. “I was limping across the stage, but I got my MBA,” he remembers with a proud smile. Mere months after graduating in May 2017, he found another full-time job. Throughout the process, he states that he has learned how to be comfortable asking for and accepting help. Now, Romans has a new mission. “Also give it in return,” this grateful stroke survivor advises.

With a heart of gold and a legacy of healing, this physician is saving Coastal Bend children and influencing generations of pediatric physicians
D
r. Marita Rafael has known what her career would be since she was a child, and it turned out to be something that helps countless children. Dr. Rafael is a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Over her 19 years at Driscoll, she has tended to a wide gamut of cases. “We see spans from colds and flus to serious injuries and traumas,” she says, “and my patients range from babies to teenagers to young adults.” Encouraged by her supportive family, Dr. Rafael studied to be a doctor in her home country of the Philippines. As she entered her career, she instantly clicked with pediatrics. “Children are resilient. They recover very fast from illness or injury, and it gives me a profound fulfillment and joy to see them bounce back and carry on their life,” she describes. “That’s what made me want to go into pediatrics.” Although the young may be resilient, there is no doubt that Dr. Rafael’s individualized approach plays a big part in their quick recovery. With each child, she applies the ‘art’ of pediatrics. “I call it the ‘art of medicine’ because
58 The Bend
Dr. Rafael is also passionate about helping area youth both inside and outside the hospital walls. She is an avid proponent of the Shattered Dreams demonstration. This realistic, community-wide trauma drill shows kids, teens, and young adults the dire dangers of drinking and driving, riding with a drunken friend, and texting while driving. “These demonstrations must continue,” Dr. Rafael urges. “Showing the real dangers saves lives.” The recent demonstration, which included mock traumas in the emergency room, was an eye-opening experience. All those who gathered to see how Dr. Rafael operates during critical moments know that she is prepared to handle any incident in the ER. This knowledge is something Dr. Rafael hopes to pass on to residents at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. She is passionate about working with these doctors, and the experience is especially rewarding because the learning is a two-way street.” Working with residents is great because they learn from you, and you learn from them,” Dr. Rafael states. “We are sharing our knowledge with each other and giving pearls of wisdom from experiences.” Dr. Rafael’s reach is exponentially multiplied when her wide gamut of knowledge and skills is passed on to the next generation of pediatric physicians. Perhaps one of the most important teachings that she demonstrates is her compassion. Dr. Rafael wants parents to know that when their children are with her, they’re in good hands. “As a parent, it’s easy for me to relate to parents. I’ve gone through it, so I can empathize with what they are feeling when their children are sick or injured,” she says. “I always tell them, I treat my patients as if (they were) my own family.”

efreshing in its simplicity, rustic style embraces a rugged, resilient spirit, while showcasing its natural beauty.
With a deep sense of love for heartfelt memories, the home of Andy and Katie Bennett is adorned with a sense of connection to the past that’s tough to resist. Their choice in decor provides a wonderful showcase for ingenuity, while giving them a chance to express their individuality, and love for fixer upper, rustic vibes. Upon entering the gorgeous home, visitors are welcomed with warm, earthy, nuanced colors from the natural world. Directly to the left, is the dining area filled with the simplicity and down-home charm of the countryside. A quad of landscape artwork, painted by Katie’s grandmother, adorns the wall, filling the area with a relaxing and comforting aura. In the living area, family heirlooms ranging from Katie’s grandfather’s magnifying glass to Andy’s
grandmother’s ukulele enrich the rustic and antique vibe. In every corner of the Bennett home, it becomes clear that Andy and Katie have become experts in taking used furniture, and turning it into vibrant, eye-catching pieces. Their style secret: repurposed objects. Katie designs the recreated pieces she finds in obscure antique shops in Corpus Christi. The living room features wall decor that was once a piano panel, while the laundry room door once belonged to an old French estate. She admits that a mirror, surrounded by an elegant gold filigree was once a wrought iron garden table. As soon as she laid eyes on the table, she knew with a bit of cleaning, and some paint, she would have the newest addition to her wall decor. The kitchen, a prominent feature in the house, complete with a granite countertop island, is in no way lacking room to gather around, cook,

and converse with family and friends. The kitchen cabinets, intricately designed as hidden spaces, house a variety of kitchen necessities such as spices, the refrigerator and freezer, along with kitchen appliances. The perfect finishing touch comes in the form of a real, working dinner bell, sitting prominently on the wall. Having children with different tastes can prove to be a challenge where home decor is concerned. Not for the Bennett’s. Their eclectic tastes in home decor are incorporated into the children’s’ bedrooms where vintage modern style meets one-of-a-kind repurposed furniture, sporting the latest colorful designs and trends. Katie also extends heartfelt treasures into her children’s rooms, not only by allowing their personalities to shine through each decorative element, but also through furniture choices. While most children would prefer new furniture, the Bennett children are ahead of the game! From a chest of drawers that once belonged to Katie, to an old door frame now used as a headboard, the artistic flair in repurposing these objects not only becomes another meaningful piece, it also continues the story of the furniture, by changing the style to suit each child’s personality. Her knack for design is especially evident in the Pinter-

Complete with a staircase, the cozy, compact nook houses a comfortable seating area, with enough room to study, relax, or hang out with a few friends. The beauty has just begun on the first floor. At the foot of the stairs, guests will find a strategically placed cubby area, complete with a charging zone for each child. Katie proudly states that all electronic devices are turned in after school until homework is finished. Not only is this cubby area a creative idea, it also keeps the family organized and on task! As guests ascend the stairs to the second floor, they are greeted by Katie’s custom-made wall art, displayed as canvases bearing inspirational quotes. With rooms to spare, the Bennetts added a crafting and game room on the second floor. Every avid crafter needs a space that allows for free-flowing creativity to shine. The crafting room is the perfect area for the Bennett family to carry out their creative genius. The
room contains sewing machines, and an abundance of storage space, allowing for easy access to crafting tools and supplies. Katie even has a colorful ribbon station used for making mums! The game room is the perfect place to unwind after a long day, while engaging in family time! The TV and couch offer an area for gameplay and relaxation, while the neatly stacked board game wonderland offers an enticing selection of recreational possibilities. Stepping outside, the verdant backyard provides a lush and tranquil backdrop for outdoor play and entertaining. An outdoor kitchen, built by Andy, adds the perfect finishing touch for family gatherings. The Bennett family’s friendly, inviting, and easy-going nature is reflected in the comfortable furnishings, and casual feel of their home.

hen it comes to beauty products, we say more is always more. But if you’re overloaded with eye-shadow palettes, nail-polish bottles, and everything in between, knowing how to show it all will not only make your vanity look picture-perfect, it’ll make getting ready much more enjoyable. Keep your counter space clear of clutter. Store your endless compacts and nail polishes in the drawers or pretty boxes on shelves. Only the designer details make the cut for the counter top showing off your passion for shiny things. Display your products with your favorite packaging on a tray and store the others away. This allows for a chic look that is all the rage. Exposing your vanity, as opposed to hiding all your products away, is the trendiest way to show off your

morning routine. I keep my most used products within reach for daily access. Everything else is kept tucked away in drawers and baskets out of sight. This goes for hand cream, facial products, everyday makeup items, and perfume. Add a clear container of sorts to store smaller products like mascara. This way, you can make the most of your space. Flowers freshen up any space, as per usual. But, adding them to your vanity adds an extra special touch. Adding a candle with a crisp scent will also bring a touch of freshness to your countertops. So, don’t hide those products away. Organized chaos can be a great (and aesthetically pleasing) thing!

See You in the Neighborhood My sign off slogan for these Bend Magazine pieces has always been "See you in the neighborhood," because we believe that the hallmark of a Braselton Home is a Braselton Neighborhood; a community created for our homebuyers to live and play in. Each Braselton neighborhood is characterized by homes built to be architecturally appealing for decades, with streets laid out to minimize traffic and maximize pedestrian opportunities and exercise. Many have water features to add grace and beauty to the landscaping, and playgrounds to give your children a safe and fun place to play ... these all build strong and vibrant community for our homeowners One of our best known Braselton Neighborhoods is Corpus Christi's only Master-Planned Community, Rancho Vista. In the Southside, conveniently located near the corner of Yorktown and Rodd Field Road, Rancho Vista is a 300 acre planned community with much to offer its homeowners. Several distinct neighborhoods comprise the development, each with unique homesites, featuring lakeside, boulevard, oversized, garden, and estate lots; all surrounding a large central park , with a walking trail system, featuring and lakes and landscaping that extend all the way to Oso Creek and the King Ranch beyond. The walking and jogging trails and paths are off the roadways and therefore safe; dog and kid friendly, and easily accessible. They also have children's playgrounds and sports areas, so families can walk or bike on the trails to the
playgrounds and fields to play. This neighborhood will access the future Nature Preserve on Oso Creek, with wildlife viewing opportunities and nature walks; and, since floor plans in this development range from 1400 square feet to 3,600 square feet, there is a home for everyone, from young families with children, to seniors downsizing, to Bungalow garden homes, all can take in the vibrant lifestyle opportunities that this neighborhood offers Part of the Rancho Vista charm is the careful selection of materials inside and out that distinguish a Braselton neighborhood. From the magnificent Monument Tower entry gates to the brick, stucco, and landscaping that make up our homes' exteriors, all are designed to give each home a distinct personality while still contributing to the Rancho Vista "look." How to Achieve the Nicest Lawn in the Neighborhood Enjoy a lush and luxuriant lawn with these chemical-free lawn care techniques By: Justin Butts Photos: Rachel Benavides
I
t is easy to keep a lush and luxuriant lawn without a lot of work and harsh, expensive chemicals. The key to a beautiful, water-conserving lawn is to use the grass to get the soil healthy!
Try these simple techniques yourself, or insist that your lawncare professionals adopt these practices on your lawn. These methods will save you and your lawn-care company a lot of time, money, and water while creating a greener and lusher lawn.
CUT GRASS TO FOUR INCHES TALL OR TALLER Cut your grass tall—at least four inches tall or taller. Short grass is a breeding ground for weeds because it allows sunlight to penetrate the soil. Tall grass shades the soil, grows more densely, chokes out weeds, and conserves water. This single simple step of cutting the grass tall makes chemical herbicides completely obsolete.
LEAVE ALL CLIPPINGS ON THE LAWN Leave all grass clippings on the lawn. Even better, mow over your fallen leaves to chop them up and integrate them into the soil. Mowed leaves and grass clippings are excellent natural fertilizer for your lawn. You will never again have to rake and bag this magnificent fertilizer, drive it to the transfer station, and then pay to dump it!
FERTILIZE LAWN WITH NATURAL COMPOST
HAND BROADCAST CLOVER SEEDS EACH SPRING
Fertilize the lawn in spring and fall with a good organic compost. Harsh chemical fertilizers kill the beneficial microbes in the soil and leave your lawn weak and thirsty. When the heat comes, as it always does, chemically-treated lawns look the worst and require the most water.
Hand broadcast clover over your lawn each spring. Clover fertilizes your lawn though nitrogen fixation, and it grows most quickly in bare patches to choke out weeds. Grass will quickly fill in the clover patches. Inexpensive clover seeds are available on-line.
Compost, however, builds healthy, humus-rich soil. Good soil promotes deep roots, and deep-rooted grass requires less water to stay green. You can use a small rotary compost spreader to easily and quickly fertilize with compost.
These traditional lawn care techniques can save a lot of time, money, and water. Your lawn will look great this summer and leave you with plenty of free time to enjoy it! .

Buccaneer Days and Coronation Nights Las Doñas de la Corte is a decades old tradition that pays homage to our past and helps define our future By Alexis Mays Photos by: Rachel Benavides
uccaneer Days conjure up images of bull riding, cattle roping, and cowboy boots. It is also a time when art, fashion, and the community come together for Las Doñas de la Corte. The Corte will present its Coronation on May 3rd at the American Bank Center’s Selena Auditorium.
B
Ruth Welch, an original member who is now 97 years old, recalls the early days. “I was president of Las Doñas, my dad was king, and my son was chancellor,” states Welch, who is still a member. “Las Doñas is about bringing the community together,” she adds, illustrating how, from the beginning, the goal of the event has been to enrich the city.
Betsy Carrell, President of Las Doñas de la Corte, explains how the organization began adding a new dimension to Buccaneer Days 65 years ago. “The King’s Men organization was formed to honor civic leaders in our community and to help honor Coronation participants with special parties,” says Carrell. “And that’s still the tradition today.”
This event is also well known by its ornately designed gowns based on the court’s theme. This year, 22 duchesses will be presented under the theme, “The Court of Magnificent Decorative Arts.” Local or regional artists create the art for the gowns, and four houses of seamstresses bring the designs to life.
74 The Bend
Buccaneer Days began 81 years ago. The pirate theme of Buccaneer Days is inspired by the days when pirates roamed the Corpus Christi shores. The first year of the of Las Doñas Coronation in 1954 was put on quickly, thanks to some energetic and dedicated Corpus Christi women. As part of the 65th year of Las Doñas de la Corte, they are also hosting a Treasure Box Hour at Driscoll Children’s Hospital before the Buccaneer Days night parade. Gown themed coloring books will be distributed to the children there. “It is all about interior design through the ages,” Carrell describes. “Alexis Hunter is the Wardrobe Chairman this year, and the gowns and trains are exquisite. Their influences range from the earliest known interior designs to more modern, iconic designs. What is wonderful is that they are easily recognizable and used in homes and buildings today.” Avery Cohen is one of the 22 who will present a living art piece during the Coronation. It’s her third year to be involved with the group and first as a duchess. “It’s such a fun way to connect with the community,” she gushes. Helping facilitate the event is extremely rewarding for Carrell, particularly because of the many ways it benefits the community. Las Doñas de la Corte partners with the Coastal Bend Community Foundation to raise matching funds on the Day of Giving, providing tens of thousands of dollars for local charities. Everyone is invited to join the group in honoring members of The Court of Magnificent Decorative Arts and in supporting the Day of Giving at www.cbcfoundation.org. After the parade, the gowns will be on display at the Art Center of Corpus Christi from May 9 to June 3. The exhibit, free and open to the public, allows residents to get an up-close look at the iconic gowns. From the artists to the duchesses to the nonprofit organizations, there is no doubt that Las Doñas de la Corte has created a ripple effect felt throughout the entire Coastal Bend. “To have had so much participation in it, it’s just great to see the community and its people come together,” Welch reflects. “I am very proud of Las Doñas.” Tickets to the coronation go on sale April 5th at the American Bank Center Box Office and online

OUT & ABOUT / CELEBRATION
Above Par Love How Beverly and Doug brought their dream wedding to life By: Jo Anne Howell Photos by: Heidi Rae Photography
A
lot of love and attention to detail were poured into this magnificent event for Beverly and Doug. Family and friends enjoyed an entire week of laughter and love while they attended luncheons, showers, and a private rehearsal dinner at the Corpus Christi Yacht Club.
Guests gathered at the First Methodist Church on Ocean Drive for the ceremony. Luxurious Raj tents greeted the guests at the valet entry. Inside the church, the sanctuary aisle was styled with a custom hand painted runner adorned with the couple’s family crest and monogram. White peonies, Blushing Bride, white Hydrangea and roses grandly filled the front of the church, and gorgeous copper velvet-trimmed floral arrangements decorated the pews. After the ceremony, guests met at the Corpus Christi Country Club where two ice bars, serving the finest of champagnes, awaited them. While anticipating the appearance of the bride and groom, guests nibbled on delicious appetizers. When the happy couple arrived, they took to the round dance floor, which was custom designed with their logo in copper ink. After their first dance as husband and wife, dinner was served.
78 The Bend
Guests took their seats at tables adorned with copper silk and a sheer gold overlay. The head table was dressed in exquisite copper silk linens overflowing with floral garlands and tall clouds of flowers. The bride’s cake was perfectly placed upon a custom ivory silk linen with hand-sewn rosettes, which had been flown in from Los Angeles. The oversized rosettes on the linen mirrored the cake’s fondant rosettes. The chocolate groom’s cake sat upon EVENT DESIGN AND PLANa linen that had been lovingly handNING - Jo Anne Howell, Oh made by the bride. Goodie Designs + Events, LLC As the night ended, guests received personalized golf balls with the couple’s monogram. Doug is an avid golfer at the Club, and, of course, their love is above par! Beverly collects Christmas ornaments and handed out crystal heart shaped monogrammed ornaments to her guests.

Stir in the tomatoes, breaking them apart with your spoon. Heat to a simmer, then crack eggs on top of tomato mixture. Sprinkle feta cheese throughout. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes, or bake in the oven preheated to 375° until egg whites are opaque (about 10 minutes).

86 The Bend
DIRECTIONS: In a large bowl, whisk flour, eggs,
milk, water, butter, and salt together until a thin batter is formed. Set aside to rest. In a separate bowl, fold fresh herbs and pepper into the chevre. In a medium pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add mushrooms, salt and pepper, and simmer until cooked down (about 5 minutes). Set aside. Heat a small pad of butter in a non-stick 12” skillet over medium heat. Ladle 1/3 cup batter into the pan, and swirl around until pan is completely covered with a thin layer. Cook on each side for 1-2 minutes, until lightly golden. Cook the remainder of the batter using the same method. To assemble the crepes, spread 2 tablespoons chevre/herb mixture on the crepe, place ¼ cup of arugula down the center, and spoon sautéed mushrooms on top.

oing out and hitting downtown in 2018 is definitely an all-new and different experience from a year ago. The recent resurgence of Downtown Corpus Christi has proven to be a success with exciting new spots popping up one by one. The most recent newcomer to open its doors is Bar Under the Sun (BUS), located at the old Greyhound Station on North Chaparral St. If you’ve been on Instagram lately, then you’ve definitely heard about BUS and, more specifically, their flagship drink: the Frozen Rosé. More popularly known as the Frosé, this hip drink is making big waves, not only on social media but also all over the Coastal Bend. While the drink may seem pretty straightforward with its name, BUS’ version has a lot more behind it. According to manager Zach Dauth, the drink, already familiar in Austin and San Antonio, was included on BUS’ menu to bring a big city vibe to
Downtown Corpus. By adding their magic touch to the Frosé, BUS was able to make the drink their own. It was no easy task, though. Dauth shares that they went through 10-15 recipes using different mixtures and types of Rosé. The rosé that ultimately won out was the vibrantly dark hued Rosé de Malbec, a deeper flavor hinting at wild strawberries and cherries. By adding homemade simple syrup, freshly squeezed lemon juice for tartness, a little bit of water and sugar to ensure perfect freezing consistency, and a strawberry garnish, BUS created the perfect Frosé. Recently, BUS began offering customers the choice to top off the drink with some sake. One word: mouthwatering. The unique and dynamic flavor of BUS’ signature cocktail will have you ordering a second glass before you’ve finished the first. Contact: 702 N Chaparral St Corpus Christi, Texas (361) 462-4121

CUISINE / THE DISH
From Nona’s Kitchen, With Love Authentic Mexican cuisine in the Coastal Bend By: Jinky Romero Photos: Rachel Benavides
E
rica Franco immigrated to the United States from Victoria, Mexico in 2014. She came equipped with a genuine love of cooking and a treasure trove of amazing family recipes that had been passed down through the generations. Franco, endearingly known as Nona to her children and grandchildren, began running the catering aspect of her daughter’s banquet hall in McAllen, Texas. However, her daughter, Erika Rose, relocated to Corpus Christi in 2016. When Erika Rose decided to host a local dinner club, she asked her mother to do the cooking. The guests were floored by the savory meals, and one particular guest offered Franco a chance to start a small breakfast business at Howard’s BBQ in downtown Corpus Christi. From there, Nona’s Cocina was born. Nona’s Cocina, which translates to Nona’s Kitchen, officially opened in May of 2017. Less than a year later, Franco has created a solid following with her restaurant’s authentic flavor. Nona’s Cocina is known as one of the best places to get Mexican food in the Coastal Bend—and for good reason! Franco’s specialties, Cochinita Pibil (traditional Mexican pulled pork marinated in achiote) and Tamales Veracruzanos (authentic pork tamales wrapped in banana leaves), are oneof-a-kind dishes due to their tender meat, rich taste, and filling portions. Nona’s

also serves breakfast tacos and creates delicious homemade salsas. Currently, the restaurant operates exclusively out of the drive thru of Howard’s BBQ from 6:30-10:00 AM, but they also offer catering services. The future is bright as can be for Nona’s Cocina! A stand-alone location is set to open in Hamlin Plaza, and in the very near future, a food truck will be serving up Franco’s unique recipes and sauces all over Corpus Christi and Portland.
In your hand Want a more accessible way to reach Nona’s Cocina? Worry not; a smartphone app is currently in the works for the restaurant!
Erika Rose shared this anecdote. “One of her grandchildren summed up his Nona the best. When asked if he understood Nona with her rapid Spanish, he smiled and replied, ‘No, but I understand food.’ Nona’s Cocina represents everything about the American dream come true.” Contact: 1002 Antelope Corpus Christi, Texas (361) 980-6662

Shop Local…or Not at All Family-run storefronts gave early Corpus Christians everything they needed in their neighborhoods By: Jillian Becquet Photo Credit: Public domain; Library of Congress, Prints & Photographs Division, HABS TEX, 178-CORP, 1—1
T
he myriad of shopping options Coastal Bend residents enjoy today did not exist in the 19th century. In those days, Corpus Christi had three main streets: Chaparral, Mesquite, and Water.
Chaparral, also called Front Street, was the city’s main commercial thoroughfare where one could procure almost any needed item. One of the most prominent buildings on Chaparral Street was the Conrad Meuly House & Store. Meuly, a Swiss immigrant, bought the property in 1848. He spent the next several years designing and building the two-story building that featured impressive 14-foot high ceilings. The structure was constructed from traditional local materials including clay, oyster shell, and lime, but its iron grillwork made it an architectural highlight of the city. If the ironwork reminds you of New Orleans architecture, it may be because Meuly married Margaret Rahm

in New Orleans in 1847. Meuly was among some of the early traders and shopkeepers to set up in the city. He arrived following his capture during the Texan Santa Fe Expedition, an effort by the Republic of Texas to divert trading from New Mexico into Texas. Initially offering bakery and confectionary items, the Meuly store grew to offer dry goods and groceries. For a time, Dr. Arthur Spohn lived and officed with the Meuly family. Shopping in early Corpus Christi was a neighborhood affair. The Meulys and many others lived and worked in their shops. Often, these shops were passed down through the generations. Although the Meuly building was demolished in the 1950s, the memory of these frontier families lives on in street names, including Staples, Kinney, and of course, Meuly.
