Cubbing – a system to keep children busy. - D.R.K. Sarma, LeaderTrainer (C)
It is now-a-days common to hear from parents that they were not able to control their kids in the house after they come back from school. They say that they will not change their uniform after return from school but they snatch the mobile of father or mother and play games hours together till thedevice is completely discharged. Then they operate the remote of T.V. and watch cartoon shows. O.K. Then what next? They say they take the tab and watch video games ignoring all the commands of the mother for snacks, milk etc. Next… they get tired, take dinner and sleep. The result is a poor performance in academics, physical health and character with warnings from the school authorities. No doubt, the same situation hangs in all the families. Why is it so? They have no other activity at home after return from school as they were continuously with books while at school. Parents will not be able to engage them in a suitable activity which interests them. Hence they choose to engage themselves this way. Talking about the hazards of the idiot box, a British short story writer warned the parents in 1980s, that the monster damages the sense in the head and kills the imagination dead. It makes the child dull and blind, the child cannot think and he only sees. Watching the games in mobile or tab continuously for long hours effects their vision. The founder of the scout movement, Lord Baden Powell, had well studied the psychology of the child 100 years ago and his study gives us the reason for the present state of majority of children as described above. The boys of 5 to 6 years have excess energy and it should be channelized in a right way otherwise it may lead to their restlessness or mischief or destruction. He suggested that the children should be kept busy in activities which interest them. Children like stories of adventure, stories of animals, moral stories, games, play acting, action songs, handicrafts, gardening, swimming etc. Their span of attention is very short. They may show interest in an activity for a few minutes. It is well said. But where is the time for the teacher in the class room to engage them this way? B.P. says a class room teacher cannot do these things but a cub master who is specially trained can engage them well because the C.M. will be one with them to enter into their games and laughter and win their confidence unlike the teacher who commands. That is where the cubbing finds it suitable for the children in the age group of 6 to 10 years. A talented cub master designs a 45 minute programme to engage the children by assortment of a variety of activities. The publication of wolf Cub`s Handbook in 1916, made us to celebrate the centenary of cubbing recently. Every Cub master and every parent of the child finds the Part III of the book – Objects and Methods of Wolf Cub training as a solution to the problems of today`s child. Teachers who handle this age group should take up cubbing and undergo cub master`s training as an entertainment or recreation for them rather than a duty enforced. A cub master has to study for a good number of stories or games of different types or action songs. Children want noise. Let them have it while playing active games. They are ready to tell lies. Parents or the cub master should discourage it. But don`t abuse the child for it. They are selfish. Selflessness can be taught in a practical way to give things away to others and to encourage them to do good turns to others. In this way, their weaknesses can be overcome by creating suitable activities in the pack programme. Once the child shows interest in the Pack Programme, it is the next step to think of the fundamentals of scouting like Law, Promise, Prayer etc. Whatever may be the nature of activities, they should improve the character, physical health, service and skills of the child. That`s why a cub master`s job is not a duty but a responsibility with creativity. Here it is worthy to mention to late Abdul Kalam`s address to students: “Knowledge = Creativity + Righteousness ( or adhering to moral principles) + Courage. Learning gives creativity; Creativity leads to thinking; Thinking provides knowledge and Knowledge makes you great. When there is beauty in the character, there is harmony in the home. When there is harmony in the home, there is order in the nation. When there is order in the nation, there is peace in the world.

June-2017 So, Children should have courage to think different, to invent, to travel to an unexposed path, to discover the impossible, to combat the problems and to succeed for the unique qualities of the youth.” Cubmasters should invite parents, particularly mothers, to show them how their children are kept busy and device some activities to keep them busy at home. It may be like maintaining a small garden of flowers or leafy vegetables in an innovative way. In conclusion, the cub masters should prepare the cubs to develop creativity, righteousness and courage by designing suitable activities within the framework of APRO Part II to make them Golden Arrow Cubs. Managements of schools should encourage to start Cub Packs in their schools, if not existing, to keep our children busy so that both children and parents will be happy.

PILIGRIMAGE TO GILWELL PARK -M.N. SHADAKSHARI ALT(S)
The Pigsty This is the place where the first Rovers who came to clear the area stayed in 1919. So this is considered to be the first camp site and hence preserved.
The Leopard Gates The gates were designed, built and erected by Don Potter in 1928. This marks the real entrance to Gilwell Park which is now closed. Turn right to reach the reception area and the White House.
The Balustrade When the London Bridge was dismantled in 1820 A section of this 13th century stone Balustrade were auctioned. Thomas Osborne the owner of Gilwell at that time. Bought a section of it and installed it at the back of the White House.
B.P’s Bronze Bust This bronze bust was presented to the Association by the Scouts of Mexico after the Olympics.
The Open Air Chapel This is available for all denominations. The cross that stands is made out of the original cedar of Lebanon tree which was uprooted in the storm of 1978.
The Roman Catholic Chapel Some Irish Catholic Scouts were visiting Gilwell on a Sunday. On Thursday, the camp Chief John Thurman decides to have a Chapel for them, and it was ready by 10:30 am on Sunday!
The Tait Mckenzie Statue This statue was presented by the Boy Scouts of America in 1966 to the Association.
The Chief’s Approach Whenever B.P stayed here, he always camped. When he visited the camps he walked in this path and this drum was banged to announce his arrival. A day in Gilwell is like a dream fulfilled. There is so much happening in that vast campus on a single day. The conference of officials in the White house, a cub master demonstrating cooking, a guides company busy in adventure activity, some Rovers zooming in their bicycles, some parents buying scout equipment in the scout shop and many activities around make the visit a real Piligrimage. It was an opportunity for the writer to exchange scout ideas with Mr. David swindles a scouter from Scotland.
