President’s Message
lans’k The year 2021 is now bringing in positive messages as the educational institutions are reopening. Our activities are largely depending on the schools and student community, therefore, this is a good news for us. This also creates more space for action and responsibility on the uniformed members of the movement. We need to continue to keep vigil to see that Covid protocols are adhered in the places of our gatherings, events and programmes. During the lock down and later unlock in phased manner, our members were confined to activities based on the internet and other mediums of communications. We learned many new things, but this is the time to get back to our normal life in the open air. Steps to promote events and camps with strict adherence of guidelines of government is initiated by the National Headquarters and states. The Schools and other educational institutions are also opening in a phased manner. Our initiatives to support the society in health education etc. need to be redesigned to benefit maximum youth.

viuh ckr “For last year's words belong to last year's language; And next year's words await another voice; And to make an end is to make a beginning.” ― T. S. Eliot. Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get everything right. Be at war with your vices, at peace with your surroundings. Make New Year's goals as goals give us direction. They put a powerful force into play on a universal, conscious, and subconscious level. Goals give our life direction.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself and changing your world. You are doing things you have never done before and more importantly, you are ‘Doing Something’!So that's my wish for all of us that we make glorious, amazing mistakes. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever you are scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever. As everyday is a blank page of a 365 page book, write a good chapter on to it. The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written.

Creating a Better World
J&K State Bharat Scouts and Guides organised Adhoc Committee meeting at State Headquarter, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu on 3rd January, 2021 under the chairmanship of Dr. Salim-Ur-Rehman, Director General, Youth Services & Sports J&K U. T. along with Shri Amar B. Chettri, Dy. Director of Boy Programme, who represented the Chief National Commissioner, BSG. In this meeting formation of a new council for J&K U.T. Bharat Scouts and Guides was discussed alongside a detailed agenda. On the occasion of Youth Day ‘Yuvana’- seven day Youth Talent Hub was organised from 5th to 11th January, 2021 which included various amazing activities such as Yuva Canvas, Yuva Fit Bit, Yuva Art of Green, Yuva Kalakkars, Yuva in Action etc. The event was a great success as Scouts/Guides, Rovers and Rangers throughout the country participated actively. Robert Baden-Powell was the man who founded the Scout movement more than 100 years ago. A soldier, national hero, educator and prolific writer. Commemorating the 80th Death Anniversary of sir Lord Baden Powell on 08th January, 2021,the members of the Bharat Scouts and Guides paid tribute to the founder of the movement throughout the country. Lord Baden Powell is appropriately known as the “Chief Scout of the World” as he was the one who brought scouting to the youth of the world and then the world scouting movement grew. Scouting is based on the ideas laid out in his best-selling book ‘Scouting for Boys’.Remembering the farewell message prepared by Baden Powell for his Scouts to be published only after his death, he wrote; “Try and leave this world a little better than you found it,” It’s a message that is as relevant today as it was in the 1940s, and remains a source of inspiration for young people throughout the world. Happy Republic Day! With Scout/Guide Greetings!

QUALITY EDUCATION IN THE FORM OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS TAKEN BY VIVEKANANDA GROUP OF N.E. RAILWAY Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai once said, “One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” Quality education gives us all the chance to build a better life. For children born into poverty, it’s an essential part of their way out of it. This is especially true for girls in developing countries, who face additional barriers that can make education elusive. TRAINER’S CORNER ELEMENTS OF THE SCOUT/GUIDE METHOD: 1. LAW AND PROMISE Scout/Guide Method is a system and is formed as an independent group of seven elements. One of the seven elements is Law and Promise. For the first time, the World Scout conference adapted a mission statement for scouting in 1999. Mission statement: The mission of scouting is to contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law, to help build a better world where people are selffulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society. The vision statement of BSG is “……..providing young people with value-based, attractive and challenging programmes…….”. So, Scout/Guide programme recognizes the need of values as essential to mould the character of the youth. Law: It is a code of living for each member of the unit. It provides a concrete and practical way for young people to understand the values which scouting proposes. The Founder states `Scout Law is our binding disciplinary force. Promise: The Promise is a personal pledge to do one`s best to live according to that code which every person makes before a group of peers when he/she chooses to join the movement. By making the Scout Promise, the young person makes a voluntary decision to accept the Scout Law and do his /her best. The fact of making the Scout Promise in front of the peers, parents and other elders makes his/her personal commitment public. It also symbolizes a social commitment to the others in the group. This is the first symbolic step in the process of self-education. The following ideas were expressed by the youth all over the world when they were asked how do they implement the Law and Promise: v v v v
12
By trusting each other in the movement. By being real in one`s beliefs, words and actions Do team work in every situation and every activity. Be honest with oneself and others in every step of life

Regularly help mothers at home and clean the house. By being brand ambassadors of the movement to motivate fellow youth to join the movement Meet with new friends and exchange ideas to create a better world Help the community and the environment and offer to work as a volunteer to create a better world. Be a good example to lead future generations Help other people who are in need, no matter how small the help may be, anytime and anywhere. By being trustworthy in everything that the youth do in their life. Look at the bright side of things Be creative for tomorrow`s situation; develop our skills. Pick up plastic and trash from the water in order to prevent flooding. Do your best to help others without expecting anything in return. Protect the environment, like planting the trees, watering them and protecting them. Respect Nature, animals and insects and no cutting of trees. Smile every day and say thank you for every help, however small it may be. Do your best every day to help people in need and keep your smile to them, especially to the old people and the orphans. Respect the Constitution, Flags and National Anthem Live in Scouting and Love Scouting.
As trainers, let us motivate our unit leaders to implement these ideas through a practical approach by way of activities that have been incorporated in the APRO. This is the way to prepare the youth to live up to the Law and Promise. It is essential to prepare our youth to work selflessly, not for a particular recognition. As the Founder said activities are not meant for `badge hunting` but for self-development. - D. R. K. Sarma, LT (C), South Central Railway

THE BHARAT SCOUTS AND GUIDES SUPPORTING MIGRANTS IN SHELTER HOMES The government of NCT Delhi established temporary shelter homes in schools for the safety and security of migrants in the city. This is a way to mitigate the spread of Covid-19. The Bharat Scout and Guides was requested to organize skills programs in the shelter homes. In partnership with the local government, Scouts and Guides organized and reached out to 13 temporary shelters. They were divided into small patrols taking consideration the health protocols. The groups did awareness campaigns at the shelter homes with information on the importance of maintaining social distancing, hand washing, maintaining healthy hab- its, sanitation and more. Some groups also introduced physical activities such as yoga, basic exercises and games. Small children were entertained through actions songs, games, drawing and painting. In the eve- nings, Scout volunteers arranged video clips for the migrants to watch. “I am very Proud of our entire Bharat Scouts and Guides team who are actively creating awareness among the local people on how to fight Covid-19 and also extending help to the citizens voluntarily in various parts of the country”, said Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Youth Affairs & Sports and Minister of State for Minority Affairs. The migrants have been showing signs of acute homesickness. Apart from entertain- ing the migrants, Scouts and Guides distributed clothes, COVID-19 safety kits and home-made masks. About 1,500 migrants took part in the daily skill-based activities. A migrant labourer, Nupa, said, “Since the Scouts and Guides came in the shelter home, we are very happy to see them and have learned so many new things, how to wash hand, how to use mask etc. I will go back to my home and share this story with others.”
