TRAINER’S CORNER

ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SCOUTING:

Scout Method: 8. Nature:- The scout method comprises of eight interdependent elements forming a unified and integrated whole. One of such elements is Nature. Scouting is full of activities in nature. Without connecting` Nature` scouting or guiding activities cannot be held. Scouting is an outdoor activity. The fifth part of scout law states "A scout is a friend to animals and loves nature." The reason for linking nature to scout activities is that young boys and girls love to live and work in nature which is quite contrary to the classroom environment.

Nature is composed of five elements, namely, Earth (pruthvi), water (Aapah). Light (Tejah), Air (Vayu) and Space (Aakaash or Cosmic). Indian culture adores all the five elements as the Great creations of God which are essential for supporting life of all living beings. If any one of the above five elements is absent or disturbed, our life will be paralyzed. So scouting recognises the importance of of nature and all the activities are projected to preserve nature. A real scout views nature as a great companion. In the words of the Founder of the movement “Nature study will show you how full of beautiful and wonderful things God has made the world for you to enjoy. Be contented with what you have got and make the best of it.

At present, man is using nature beyond his necessities. Earth is dumped with material like plastic. Deforestation and dissertation are making the life on earth miserable. Water is polluted and even contaminated due to heavy inflow of industrial wastes and chemical wastes. Even the marine life is affected by the polluted water. The underwater animals and the aquatic life have been facing a serious threat. Sun`s light is the main source of energy to the plants and all the living beings. This light energy which is reaching the earth is carrying harmful radiant energy such as ultraviolet rays. By nature, these harmful U-V rays are filtered by the ozone layer. Unfortunately, the industrial gases and the harmful gases emitted from the automobiles have been damaging the ozone layer. The harmful gases released from the industries do pollute the air. In this way, all these essential elements of nature are either damaged or becoming limited for use. jAt present, sustenance of these elements is necessitated.

Creating - Better India

As members of this great global movement, we should take responsibility and create awareness in the public to keep abreast the above facts to keep our upcoming generation to protect all the five elements of nature. A number of proficiency badges such as Gardener, Conservation, Farmer, Naturalist, Florist etc have been introduced besides regular activities such as tree plantation, No plastic campaigns etc. to prepare the youth to take care these five elements.

The scouts and guides organisations all over the world have also been doing their best with the activities related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) launched by the United Nations. SDG 6 is related to Clean water and Sanitation. Our scouts and guides can plan the following by involviing the public: • Ensure supply of safe and affordable drinking water: Partnership may be made with the local sarpanches or philanthropists or local leaders for the need to construct overhead tanks and taps in villages. • Improve water quality by using desalination methods. • Awareness programmes for prevention of dumping industrial waste near water resources and release of industrial wastes and waste water into the rivers or rivulets or streams. • Wastage of water to be prevented by providing taps. • In remote areas where there is no provision for water tanks and taps, building wells or borewells with water filters will help in supply of safe drinking water to prevent water-borne diseases. • Awareness campaigns to end open defecation. This is possible if the local administrative machinery is motivated to provide washrooms and toilets. We should keep in mind the needs of women and girls in this aspect. • Provision of dustbins particularly in the remote villages. • We shoud take a pledge to implement access to safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (W.A.S.H) to keep our community clean. SDG 7 : Affordable and Clean energy: • People should be made aware of renewable sources of energy like Solar energy. Our scouts and guides should organize awareness programmes in this aspect. • Gobar gas plants to be suggested in remote areas where people maintain cattle. SDG 13: Climate Action: Regulating and reducing emissions and promote renewable energy. • Automobiles can be either gas driven or electrical. This will reduce the emissions. SDG 14: Life under water:

Creating - Better India

• Beaches should be kept clean. Scouts and guides in the coastal areas have been doing this activity. • Campaigns for `no plastic use` on board of ships and vessels. • Marine life is our national property. SDG 15: Life on land: Awareness rallies to be organized for the following: • Deforestation and desertification should be discouraged to sustain life on earth. We should campaign for more plantation. • Reduce the use of harsh chemicals • Practice of single use and disposable material should be discouraged. • Volunteer for beach clean-ups or cleaning of publlc places like parks, schools etc…

So, let us do our best to preserve nature. In conclusion let us recollect Baden Powell words “Try to leave this world a little better than you found it ……”.

KEY TO HAPPINESS

Continued from previous issue……

Passion: This is the thing which keeps you going. If you follow your passion and make it your career/ goal, working for it tirelessly you will be immensely successful and happy. Even if your passion is notyour job then also take out some time to work on it to get happy. Loyalty: It gives lot of satisfaction when you are sure that you are faithful towards your duties at all levels. If you remain loyal to your family, friends, work, fellow persons and country then happiness comes from within and it showers others also. This quality makes you a trustworthy person as everyone trusts a loyal person. Resilience: It is our ability to adapt and bounce back when things don't go as planned. Resilient people are courageous enough to acknowledge the situation, learn from their mistakes and then move forward more confidently. You should take the failure as a challenge and commit yourself for better results by maintaining self-control. It is important to understand that things change, so occasionally one need amended or scrap the plans. This quality keeps the person optimistic, motivated and happy. Initiative: Doing new for others gives pleasure. You should try to make plans and implement them wisely and wholeheartedly. Dreaming and chasing the dreams is a secret of happiness. There may be failures or things may not work out altogether but never ever give up and always stand up to take another initiative for a bigger leap. Systematic:This approach makes you more efficient and ultimately happier as you have ample time for all the tasks you undertake. A wise time management and prioritising the tasks will ensure success as well as a share of personal time. Make a realistic routine for yourself and follow it to avoid frustrations and messing up the things. Listening: It is important to listen to others and take wise decisions with meaningful conversations. When you listen more then you are learning more from the experiences of other people. This habit makes you more considerate and hence more acceptable to other people. What’s more satisfying feeling than people accepting and liking you. Helpfulness: It is doing useful things for people what they can’t do for themselves. When we help others we get more things done and hence making each other’s lives more easy and pleasant. Remember, help means helpful to those who really need it. Help people without waiting for their call. Always give what people need, not always what they want. Helping others gives immense pleasure. An important thing is whenever you are in need never hesitate to ask for help. Scouts and Guides try to include these qualities in your life style and make them a habit to BE More Happy and spread the Happiness.
