October The Bikers Trading Post

Page 1

Welcome to the digital version Of the Bikers Trading Post The Bikers Trading Post will now be published monthly as a digital magazine. We have been making some big changes. Now, instead of being a one man show, we're teaming up with others to make us more of a community magazine. This will let us cover more and publish a lot more of all the events that you are going to. We now have people in Erie and Crawford Counties and I think one in Washington and Fayette County. We are a local publication and dealing with local happenings. Yes we will cover a few of the bigger shows that a lot of you follow but we understand you have no interest in a poker run in Kentucky. We will not be limited to the per page cost like in the normal printed publications. You can download the whole magazine and save it and you may take it to a printer and print part of it or all of it. The calendar is sideways in the view mode so you can print it to hang. Most of the articles will have links and they are in red and labeled. If you click on that link it will take you to the albums of photos or a video slide show from the event and you are welcome to right click in them to download and use for any non-commercial use. Please give us credit if you put them on your pages. You can take them and get prints of you and your friends if they were at one of the events that we covered. We have a facebook page that if you click on it will take you to a current list of the events that are happening in our area. At this time we have listed 333 events past and present for 2015 in Western Pa. https://www.facebook.com/thebikerstradingpost Please check it out and friend us, and please feel free to share anything on that page you want to. Now with that all being said this is a biker magazine. We are covering the bike life, style and events. We work hard to try and keep things clean but if something is happening in the background and we miss it, OH WELL. If you are offended by off color jokes and photos of people getting crazy and photos of girls on bikes you are at the wrong place. This month one of our features is East Coast Motorcycle Rally ( formally known as East Coast Sturgis ) There were a lot of naked people in the background and I could not use most of the bike game photos so you are warned. We are looking for people who go to a lot of the events and would like to do sales and also cover a few events. We are trying to keep the areas to about one county each, so after you get set up you could cover it in 2 or 3 days a month. We are offering a great sales incentive so if you are looking for a little money on the side please get in touch with us. We will also be looking for bikes to feature in the magazine along with models for on the bikes. Anyone that is going to an event and wants to share it with us please e-mail us at thebikerstradingpost@gmail.com. If you would like to join us in sales, covering events and getting published please let us know. This month we are starting to have a monthly contest. It is located on the last of the Biker Friendly Pages. Check it out and enter. I will apologies because we made the decision and put it together on the day that we were going to press.

For a free download to print the calendar click here Please when you are checking our an event and you see this button

click

on it. It will take you to an album that has all the photos from that event.

POLICE OFFICER MEMORIAL MOTORCYCLE RUN. Saturday September 26th was a very busy day for me with many things going on but I had to make it up to Greenville for the start of the POLICE OFFICER MEMORIAL MOTORCYCLE RUN. This run was in honor of a 10 year veteran police officer Jeremiah Christner who, with his son Jeremiah Jr., was killed in a accident on 8-20-2015 in Greenville, just down the road from their home. Jeremiah Christner Sr. was a police officer in Greenville for the last 10 years. He also worked part time in Jamestown and Sharon. He would carry around stuffed animals in his police car and hand them to kids he would see playing in their yard or walking. He was a very well known and loved person in our community, especially among the children of the area. He enjoyed his job as an officer. Christner touched a lot of lives in the town. The 10 year veteran of the police department was a patrolman and also served as a DARE instructor for several years. Christner was a father of eight kids. Both Jeremiahs were also very well known Christians.

POLICE OFFICER MEMORIAL MOTORCYCLE RUN. A devoted family man, Jeremiah married the former Sherry A. Scriven on May 26, 1995. He cherished his time with his children and was always present and supportive of their many activities. In addition, he enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Jeremiah Lee Christner Jr.was born Sept. 3, 1997. Jeremiah attended Living Word Christian Academy and Performing Arts School, West Salem Township, where he was set to begin his senior year. At the school, he participated with the worship team, show choir and drum line. He was also a member of Living Word Christian Center where he was active with the church worship team, children s ministry and church missions. In addition to going to school, he worked a part-time job at Greenville Dairy Queen. Since a young age, Jeremiah had been extremely gifted in music and was able to play many different instruments. His other interests included riding dirt bikes and ATVs and spending many days in the outdoors with his brothers.

POLICE OFFICER MEMORIAL MOTORCYCLE RUN.

The run was lead by Freddy Scriven (Jeremiah's Sr. Brother in law) who drove Jeremiah Christner s Harley. In attendance were 80 people for just the dinner and 112 people for the ride. We had over 70 bikes and 36 sponsors. The money raised will be used for 3 scholarships, one each to be be given to a Greenville graduate, a Commodore Perry graduate, and a Living Word Christian School graduate and. They will be giving some of it to the church these two attended, as well as helping to assist his wife and children. I want to thank Chrissy Armagost for the information that she provided here. She started this run on her own and ran with it. In less than 3 weeks time with a few friends help they pulled it off and had a excellent turn out. She informed me that Jeremiah Sr was a good friend of mine and my husband s. He also was my husband s best man at our wedding. He truly was an inspiration for our community and his son was a spitting image of his dad. They were truly good people. The local moose club 276 made this their monthly ride to support our friends.

ProRider

I was invited by BJ McMullan to check out the ProRider course in Pittsburgh on September 20th that was being held at GPMC Parking Lot on Masonic Way. I have taken the Basic course from the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program so I thought I had a clue as to what to expect. First BJ is a full-time Police Motor officer with the city of Pittsburgh PA. In his duties there he rides his motorcycle rain or shine and even in the harsh Pittsburgh winters where they installs a sidecar to his Harley. He became a motor officer in 2006 and after mastering his skills he moved on and became a certified Police Motor Instructor. He teaches an 80 hour police motorcycle certification course to police officers and medics in the Greater Pittsburgh Region, he also re-certifies them in a 40 hour training course each year. Through the Pro Rider course he teaches advanced techniques to civilian motorcycle riders. During the 8 hour ProRider Advanced Skills Course they will teach how to better handle the motorcycle that they own on the road and at slow speeds. This program will incorporate the techniques learned and mastered by police motorcycle officers, and will improve the riding abilities of even the most seasoned rider. In this course the riders will "Bond" with their personal motorcycles and familiarize with the bikes' full capabilities and limitations Learn and practice slow-speed techniques that are perfect for those pesky parking lots and tight turnarounds (...and when you want to impress your friends, or passenger). Practice braking, evasive maneuvers, and hazard avoidance exercises that may save your ride and hide from serious damage, injury or death. When I arrived BJ along with Jeff Vesci and Dale Ruble were teaching the slow turns in the figure eight. They had two courses set up so all of the riders had plenty of time to practice and having 3 instructors there they kept everyone quite busy. Talking to some of the attendees they all seemed to come out much better riders than when they went in. One of the was on their fifth return and told me that is is worth it every time and BJ replied that he sees great improvement in each return trip. This is something that all seasoned riders can gain from. When we were all don the three of them did a demonstration. They ran the course with one standing on the seat and one riding side saddle showing they do not even need to use brakes. For more information check them out at http://www.proridermc.com/Pittsburgh.php. Thank you BJ for the invite and I will be seeing you soon.

Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Bike Night I got a text from G-man about a real different type of a bike night on Thursday, September 17th and I had to check it out. It was held at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. There was a nice small group of bikes and the people interacted with the residents for the evening It was real nice to see all of the residents enjoying themselves as they sat on the porch for the evening and mingled around the bikes. I had one elderly gentleman telling me about his 1963 Sportster. The people had a great time with the bikes and the bikers, and it is always nice to see bikers shown in a positive light.

Humorto to relieve relieve stress stress Humor I'm sorry but I just have to tell someone - anyone who will listen about the fucking guy who has recently moved in with us‌ So, we live in a 2 bedroom apartment and the other room is just a spare one we would use for when friends came round, so it's mostly going to waste... My girlfriends parents were quite lonely after their children left the house and had enough money to retire young so they decided to adopt. Phil's mother abandoned him after birth and the father was nowhere to be seen. He had lived with my in-laws his whole life and they honestly gave him everything he could ever want. He seemed really great to be honest, I'd met him twice before when we went to visit and he was really friendly. The only weird thing was that both times I'd met him he had a black eye, but I didn't know him well enough to ask him about it and he was a kinda quiet guy anyway so it didn't feel right to intrude. Cut to a few weeks ago some random life shit came up and Phil couldn't stay with my girlfriends parents anymore. He really needed somewhere to stay since he couldn't pay rent since he didn't have a job. We spoke about it and agreed that we have the spare room and since he was a huge part of her parents life that he could stay with us for a bit. They dropped him off the next day and although he was really sad to leave them at first he seemed happy enough when we showed him his room. We had something to eat, had a bit to drink and went to sleep and that was that. The first week went by without incident and I was working a lot so wasn't home much but then I had a week off and it was then I started to notice some weird things about this guy. The first being that he hadn't showered or taken a bath since he'd gotten here. I didn't want to be rude but I could notice that he was starting to stink a little bit. I came up with the brilliant idea to show him the new shower head we bought that has different settings like massage and pulse (can't help but feel this purchase was more for my girlfriend than me) so I said "Hey, come see this for a second, I have something cool to show you." and started over to the shower room (We have separate toilet and shower/bath rooms). As I got into the shower room I turned around and noticed that he wouldn't come in. He just kinda stood in the doorway staring at me with this stupid expression on his face. I turned the shower on to try and show him the different settings and he just fucking walked away and into his room. Alright, I did think it was a bit weird but everyone's different right? Next day I come into the kitchen to get my lunch ready for work and the floor near the sink is a bit wet. It was hard to tell because the floor is wooden and the lighting isn't great in our kitchen but I could have sworn it looked like piss. I cleaned it up anyway and brought it up with my girlfriend after I finished work. She said it was probably just water from when she washed up the night before. I agreed and pushed it out of my mind. I woke up in the middle of the night because I heard Phil's door open so I quietly walk into the kitchen. Sure enough this guy is pissing on the floor. I don't know what to do so I shout at him and he just fucking runs past me back into his room. I wake my girlfriend up and tell her what I saw and she assures me she'll speak with him tomorrow while I'm at work. I get home from work that next day and she says she's dealt with it wont be a problem again. Fine, whatever. She tells me not to tell him off and just to be normal with him, he's probably having a hard time adjusting to living somewhere else. I see her point of view and so we decide to watch a film all together that evening. Evening rolls around and we're in the living room all together watching the film. My girlfriend had text me before I got home from work that she had made some food for her and Phil and they've already eaten so I should pick some food up for myself on the way home so I did and got a pizza. Let me set the scene for you; I'm sat in the middle of the couch with my girlfriend on one side, Phil on the other side and my pizza box open on the table in front of us and a nice big slice hanging from my hand. I see it happen in slow motion, nothing in life has prepared me for this so I literally do not move for I have no previous information coded into my brain for how to react. Phil, this motherfucker just reached over and grabbed my slice of pizza straight from my hand and started eating it. I sit there for a few seconds, dumbfounded, flabbergasted, all of the ridiculous adjectives. Finally I turn and ask him what the fuck that was. He just sits there staring at me. I ask him again and raise my voice a bit and he just gets off the couch and walks into his room. We don't see him the rest of the evening. Continued on next page

Humor to relieve relieve Humor to stress I know my girlfriend really thinks a lot of Phil because he's kind of her family in a way and he really did give a lot back to her parents while they raised him. She tells me that she knows it was strange but that he just needs a bit more time to adjust to living with other people. I agree and don't bring it up again. A few days go by and things are quiet and uneventful when I'm told I have to go on a day training course the other side of the country. (England, don't worry, few hours on the train.) So I book a hotel for the night and when the day comes round I leave in good spirits, telling my girlfriend to text me if there are any problems. My training course went fine, I met up with some old colleagues and ended up drinking in the hotel bar with them. I retire to my hotel room quite late and decide to check Facebook before I sleep when I notice I have unread messages from my girlfriend. They were just a run down of how things were going. Apparently her and Phil had some food together and watched some tv, then because it was a nice evening they went on a long walk together. Ok, I'm not really a jealous guy so no big deal. I keep reading and my heart drops, she goes on to say that after she got into bed she couldn't sleep because it was lonely without me so she went to the kitchen to make a snack. Phil was up getting a drink and apparently a chance meeting in a kitchen early in the morning was enough to betray the person you've been in a relationship with for three years because she said she invited him into bed with her. I was angry, I felt sick. I didn't know what to do. I got the earliest train back I could and stormed into the house furious. I opened our bedroom door and sure enough found my girlfriend asleep actually cuddled up to Phil in bed with her. Anyway, it was super cute and to cut a long story short our dog is allowed to sleep in our bed now.

My wife asked me to buy ORGANIC vegetables My wife asked me to buy ORGANIC vegetables from the market. I went and looked around and couldn't find any. So I grabbed an old, tired looking employee and said, "These vegetables are for my wife. Have they been sprayed with any poisonous chemicals?" "The produce guy looked at me and said, "No. You'll have to do that yourself."

LAWRENCE CO ABATE TOY RUN As the sun was coming up on a seemingly ordinary Saturday morning in August, all of West Pittsburg was anticipating the arrival of Santa Claus. I know that doesn't sound quite right, but, yes, magical moments do happen right in our own back yards. Bob Russell (Lawrence Co ABATE) and Kathy Rodgers (Burg Bar) invited Santa Claus & Mrs Claus and quite a few secret elves to help ensure that children in Lawrence County receive a Christmas present. And for the 4th straight year, Lawrence County Abate & The Burg Bar came together with over 100 bikes for a toy run. All riders were asked to bring a toy or a cash donation which was split between The Taylor Township Fire Department for their Children's Christmas Party which is held at the beginning of December, and The Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County, which helps local women & children in need. This year they raised approximately $5500.00 in donations and also a lot of toys to pass out. There was food for everyone after the run which was cooked by Larry Wagner & Steve Toombs. The Round Man Band was entertaining everyone with their music as the evening wound down. It s a great day when you see all the bikers in a community come together to help make a child s Christmas wish come true. I just want to say Thank You All, You Truly Make A Difference - Lovada

Steel City Tattoo Convention Working for a magazine has certain benefits. Working for a magazine like The Bikers Trading Post has a whole list of benefits that other magazines don t. Sure, any magazine can get press passes, but having a reader base interested in tattoos got me into the third annual Steel City Tattoo Convention at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, put on by Shane ONeill Productions, which was right up my alley. Jim and I got in on both the first and last days of the convention, where we got to see artists just getting started, and the same folks wrapping up after a long weekend. We arrived early, and many of the artists weren t tattooing yet when we got there, but were instead milling around, mingling with other artists, meeting people face to face that they ve known by reputation or over the internet, and discussing their plans for the weekend. We were told that Friday was more of a social event than anything else, where people talk and show off their dedication to the craft. There were more than 120 different booths set up, and many booths had multiple artists tattooing for the weekend, plus there were vendors with clothing, tattoo gear and supplies, jewelry, aftercare products, and more. Anyone interested in tattoos or the culture at all could find something to pique their interest at this convention, where one could not only get some new ink, but also observe hundreds of other people getting new ink, and talk to artists about the craft. We perused portfolios from people all around the country, showing styles ranging from American traditional and neo-traditional to realistic, gothic, abstract, and modern styles like watercolor tattoos, and saw scores of tattoos being done while we were there.

Steel City Tattoo Convention The first thing that really caught my eye was a tattoo really just being started. Cody Hennings from Lewisville, TX. was stenciled, and had most of the outline done, but visually there was nothing special going on as he tattooed an abstract image of a butterfly and big cat on a woman s stomach. However, as I looked at it, I knew it would be something special. While walking around the convention seeing other artists, I kept returning to his booth to check out the progress. As the day went, and as Chris packed more and more color into the lines he d laid out, this image really started to pop. Out of everything I saw over something like 10 hours in two days of the convention, this was hands down my favorite piece, and his subject took it like a champ, chatting with us and never squirming that I saw.

Game Over Tattoo from Edinboro, PA had an awesome functional display piece with him that really caught my eye. Instead of an industrial looking travel kit, he had an antique piece of luggage similar to what a salesman would have used years ago. I stopped to look at it, and asked him about it, and he shared that it is an homage to his grandfather, who carried one like it on sales years before. He then shared that he s a third generation tattoo artist, so I understand why it s important for him to honor his predecessors in the family!

Steel City Tattoo Convention Many people go to tattoo conventions just for the tattoo contests. Over the weekend they had contests for 16 different categories, ranging from best tattoo to worst tattoo, most unique, and more. Sunday s contests were the broadest categories, including the best color and best black and grey pieces. There were a ton of people lined up to show off their art, and win bragging rights for their artists. Sunday we got to watch the Best Black and Grey in both large and small sized, and the Best Color in both large and small sizes. These are some of the highlights.

Steel City Tattoo Convention The true high point of the weekend for me was the sideshow act, Inkllusionist, which I had the pleasure of enjoying Sunday afternoon. The brothers Syxx and SeVen O Brien are not only talented tattoo artists with more than 20 years of experience, but are also expert showmen who put on a hell of a production of illusion and spectacle. They climbed onto the stage to the fanfare of music, and escorted by the lovely Target Girl Z (whose name would later make sense), showing off hundreds of hours of ink on their bodies. Mr. Syxx introduced the act, discussing how a good audience hopes to see the performers injured. They started off mild, with Dr. SeVen inserting a nail into his nose without noticeable harm, and performed several traditional illusions and magic tricks. I ve seen someone lay on a bed of nails, and I ve seen cinder blocks smashed on someone s stomach, but their twist to it with twin beds of nails and an audience member standing on top was new for me. The best part of this wasn t necessarily the action taking place, as much as it was the way the brothers enjoyed the show, and the rapport between the two of them, as was evidenced by them teasing each other about parental love, and even ribbing that audience volunteer about how her butt was cute, and that s why she was chosen. As their act continued, it escalated to throwing knives, and they pulled an audience member to participate in this one, as well. This one was chosen randomly, and they ended up with the man Dr. SeVen was in the middle of tattooing. Talk about an experience here, where this man not only got an awesome tattoo, but his artist paused in the middle to tease him in front of an audience, and throw knives at him! He was a great sport about it, and even held a balloon in his mouth while SeVen popped it with an enormous throwing knife.

Steel City Tattoo Convention After the show I talked with both of the brothers, and expressed my appreciation for their showmanship. They were friendly and affable, and it was a pleasure to meet two men who are both so talented in multiple areas. I got to watch the Diabolical Dr. SeVen work on finishing the tattoo on the customer who ended up on stage with them, and really enjoyed his Star Wars tattoo. The tattoo might not be a great example of their neoVictorian style, but it definitely showed the nerdy side that was well represented in their portfolios, which was something else I really enjoyed about them. When I thanked Mr. Syxx for entertaining me, he pointed out that a major point of their show is that they don t take themselves too seriously, and that they re out to enjoy themselves. I think this was obvious, and it really made the show great for me.

Thunder At The Barn I stopped at Peter B s Thunder At The Barn in Sarver, PA for their last bike night of the year on September 16th. To start with, who can go wrong with an address like 111 Rock N Roll Lane. They call it like we all like it. Babes, Bands, Beers and Bikes. Can you ask for anything better? Gatto Harley was there with their tent set up next to a one man band that could really cover the music. His name is Paul Joseph, and he is the lead vocalist/guitarist for the band Wine & Spirit. This bike night brought some real interesting bikes along with a lot of interesting people. The crowd was pretty good but this time of the year it is getting dark so early. Hopefully I will be able to run out here on a night in the middle of the summer next year.

WERA Motorcycle Roadracing I was invited to watch and photograph the WERA Motorcycle Roadracing at the Pittsburgh International Race Complex. This is only about 10 miles from where I live, and I have never been there before. It is a 400 acre complex in the rolling hills of Wampum, Pennsylvania just off the PA Turnpike, Beaver Valley Exit 13, 45 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. They have a full circuit track that is 2.8 miles with 19 corners. WERA has is the largest roadracing organization in terms of members, has established roadracing in many parts of the country where no viable program previously existed and has maintained an unparalleled safety record. WERA takes pride in its role as America s only national organization devoted exclusively to the advancement, operation and sanctioning of motorcycle roadracing. Since its establishment in 1973. They give their riders a safe source to use all the power and handling your machine was designed with, without worrying about speeding tickets, traffic hazards, pedestrians, erratic or drunk drivers or any of the other nagging realities of today s street world.

WERA Motorcycle Roadracing I was totally surprised by what I saw there and the people who were there. First I am used to photographing the motorcycles sitting still and the only thing moving is a model. Having never been there before, I asked where would have a good vantage point for photographing, and after making me hug her, the lovely lady working for the race pointed out a location on the other side of the track. When I asked her how to get there she said get on the track and drive it. My first thought was getting that Chrysler minivan on the track and seeing how fast it would go, but then reality sank back into my mind. I got settled in to a spot that I thought would be fine only to have the first motorcycle buzz past me doing about 155 MPH. OK, now we had to come up with a new game plan. After about four moves walking on the outside of the track I started getting a grip to what works. In my 41 years of working as a photographer I have enough experience to make something work no matter what situation I get put into. I had an experience being down there on the track watching the professionalism of everyone. After the races I did have time to talk to some of the race teams. This track is the only one of its type in this part of the country. I was talking to one team from Buffalo, New York and they call it their home track because it is the closest of this type to them. Western Pa has so many great facilities and places to go that are very under utilized. I am hoping to spend a lot more time at this location, and I really hope to spend some more time with the great group from the WERA Motorcycle Roadracing.
