ways to celebrate Black History Month. You could sing, dance, cook a meal or attend lectures or have conversations and dialogue. Unfortunately, most Canadians still know almost nothing about black history in Canada . "Having Black History Month helps educate Canadians about what our black history is. Does it solve the problems of racial injustice in Canada to have a Black History Month? Well, no. But is it a step among many other steps that can be taken to sort of promote a greater awareness of African Canadians? Absolutely."

AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com

T

he author of The Book of Negroes and The Illegal, Lawrence Hill, was at Bishop Marrocco/ Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School Friday, Jan. 27. Hill was a guest speaker in Romero House’s annual Howcroft Lecture at the school, reading from his books and discussing his interest in refugees, stories relating to slavery, migration, freedom and human rights. Hill spoke with The Bloor West Villager about these issues, the refugee crisis and Black History Month:

Q:

What more needs to be done for society to better understand the struggles of the black community?

Q:

Why is it important for you to talk about refugees, slavery, migration, freedom and human rights today?

A:

A:

"They’ve been lifelong preoccupations. Every writer has things that they keep coming back to, and all of my books touch on issues of freedom, migration, identity, injustice, the search for home and alienation and so I keep returning to dramatize these occupations in different ways, but it’s sort of been a lifelong pursuit. "Why am I interested in these issues? Well, because they touch on the parts of us that are most true and that other people can identify with most easily."

Q:

A:

"Well, if you look at Brexit, and if you look at the election of Donald Trump, and if you look at

Dan Pearce/Metroland

Canadian author Lawrence Hill signs his books The Book of Negroes and The Illegal before a talk at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton High School last Friday. rising popularity of parties on the far right of the political spectrum in Europe, you could easily be discouraged. There seems to be a rise in xenophobia and sort of a backlash against newcomers, refugees, immigrants and there’s a fair bit of fear mongering. The thing that is most frightening is that in a time of insecurity and general social anxiety, it’s easy to capitalize on people’s blatant fears by preaching hatred. Sometimes it’s easier to capture the human heart with hatred rather than

love. I fear that there are at least many elements of our societies in Europe and North America for example that are leaning hard toward intolerance and xenophobia and closing their hearts and closing their doors and closing their borders. " I personally believe we have room in this country for more people. We have room in our economy, we have room in our geography, in our towns and villages and cities and making it possible for refugees to come to Canada isn’t just

an act of altruism, it’s also an act of self-interest because today’s refugee will be tomorrow’s accountant, or engineer, or Giller Prize winning novelist, or emergency room surgeon or mathematics teacher. So the people who come to our country fleeing war and genocide and extreme hardship are often the most motivated to create new lives and live beautifully. So we stand to benefit from a concerted effort, not only to open our doors to welcome refugees and help them integrate into our so-

ciety, we need to recognize it’s a two-way street and we’ll receive a lot from a great deal of these refugees . Canada has been built largely on the hands of newcomers."

Q:

With February being Black History Month, in your opinion, has having a Black History Month helped change the way society views black history?

A:

"Sure. I mean I’m not saying it’s the only thing to do. There’s lots of

"Well, I don’t think there’s just one thing. There are many players: there are parents, religious leaders, educators, business leaders, politicians, community leaders and activists. "Part of advancing the interests of all people in Canada who have been previously disenfranchised and who still suffer the effects of discrimination has to do with access to education, work, public awareness, community engagement and there’s so many ways this can spill out. "So, I don’t want to pretend there’s a simple onesentence solution to addressing racial inequality in this country, but I suppose it can be addressed simultaneously on many levels. You don’t see still enough people who are African Canadians in positions of power and influence in all levels of society, politics and in our legal system. So, it’s a complicated issue because progress can be made in many different ways."

EDITORIAL | OPINION

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

Provincial politics-as-usual scupper a good toll policy Cowardice. That’s the only word to describe Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s about-face last week, scuttling Toronto Council’s plan to charge a toll to drive the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway. The road tolling plan hatched by Mayor John Tory and supported by Toronto Council might not have been a perfect solution to Toronto’s financial woes - even at $300 million a year once fully in place, it wouldn’t pay for the long-term infrastructure needs of the city - but it was a giant step. Dare we say it, approving tolls was a rare courageous move on the part of a city council that has been perennially averse to approving adequate taxation levels. For some time, it seemed as though the Wynne Liberal government was on-side with the city, and prepared to grant the necessary approval, one mature level of government to another. But last Friday, the premier changed her tune, and at a news event a safe distance up the highway in Richmond Hill, told Tory and Toronto Council that the Ontario government wouldn’t be supporting road tolls in Toronto after all. Instead, she dangled funding, a gift that might have been generous under other circumstances, of $170 million a year from the gas tax, for transit in Toronto, by 2021. It doesn’t take a great deal of insight to understand the motivation for Wynne’s flip-flop. There is an election coming up next year, the Liberals are polling rock bottom, and Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown has signaled his opposition to a plan that does impact 905 voters/motorists in the pocket book. His candidates might well prevail in some of those ridings - enough of those ridings to - gasp! - defeat the government. So of course - fast as you can say "move that gas plant!", Wynne’s Liberals shifted their support from a sensible plan and replaced it with an inadequate one. It is in character, and to give Wynne and her predecessor credit for cunning if not statesmanship, it is a strategy that’s worked well for them in the past. Support for the ill-advised Scarborough subway extension cemented wins in Scarborough Guildwood in 2013. And moving the aforementioned natural gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga helped bring about a Liberal win in 2011. But what works for politics doesn’t necessarily do the job for policy. For once, Toronto Council had gathered the strength to get the policy just right, and as usual, the province played cowardly politics.

Alternate reality beckons at Bathurst-Wilson I’ve always believed reality is bad enough. It’s bad enough Oswald shot Kennedy and terrorists drove airplanes into the World Trade Center. It’s awful that human beings are affecting the climate on a planetary scale and bringing on a mass extinction. But there are people here in Toronto who want, or perhaps need, something other than the reality we have. A billboard now sits on top of Steve’s Restaurant - a place at Bathurst and Wilson which serves a great breakfast - broadcasting a strange message. On it, a man with roundframe spectacles pokes at airplane contrails with a weirdly elongated index finger. "Are you kidding me," the caption says. "Water vapour?"

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto The woman behind the billboard is Suzanne Maher, who was born and raised in North Toronto but moved to Muskoka after being diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder. Maher has come to believe metal particles are being sprayed behind airplanes by a worldwide conspiracy of governments and the powerful to engineer "global supremacy and military domi-

nation." Why this would happen is vague, and the evidence for chemtrails is nonsense, but believers in "geoengineering" expand their alternative reality to include things people like me justifiably fear, such as Alzheimer’s and Monsanto Corporation. Maher, who also arranged chemtrail ads on the Yonge-University subway in 2015 and 2016, says many in Toronto are open to what her group, ByeByeBlueSky, can teach. "Once you find out about it," she says, "you can’t unlearn it." I asked if she’s ever doubted the truth of what she’s learned, even for a moment, and no, she hasn’t. Neither have others who believe in chemtrails. I’m afraid for them. The

shattering "truth" they’ve embraced - governments are poisoning them for profit takes hold of their lives. How could it not? In a world of "alternative facts" and weakened traditional media, we can expect more of this. This April, Maher’s group has a booth at Toronto’s Green Living Show for the first time. Back on Bathurst, there’s no telling how many people coming in for eggs benedict or carrying bags from the No Frills across the street will fall down the rabbit hole by then. Edges of Toronto is a column about how people see life in Toronto differently, depending on where they live. Reach Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com.

Six years ago, Bloordale resident and resource teacher Michael Consul was looking for a way to get students from the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) to "put their faith into action." When exploring ways to do that, he found taking students to the Philippines would be the perfect opportunity. "When you go there, it’s a culture shock because the way they live is drastically different; but when you come back to Toronto, it’s like a reverse culture shock," he told The Bloor West Villager. "You realize so many things that we place in high importance that really doesn’t matter." That first trip has since become an annual tradition. Consul runs the Catholic Student Leadership program at the TCDSB’s main office in North York. On Dec. 28, 2016, 23 students from across the board, three teachers, one adult volunteer and Consul travelled to the country for two weeks and visited six villages.

"We never really wanted to go to a village one year, and never go back," he said. "Every year, we keep going back to those villages to let them know that we’re still here and we still care." While there, the group helped in the construction of a new village, volunteered at orphanages, did community cleanups, helped plant trees and had various gift-giving parties for children. "The kids, they always come back with an extreme sense of gratitude," he said. "Whether it’s free education, health care, clothes or clean water, they really realize how privileged they are in Canada and that makes them want to give back even more." Before the group embarked on the trip, they learned about the country, its people, its culture, its traditions and its history, Consul said. Student Christian De Lara has close ties to the Philippines, as his parents are from there. The 17-year-old Grade 12 student at Francis Libermann Catholic High School in Scarborough said he wanted to help out the people from his par-

ents’ country. "It was surprising to have a bunch of strangers go to their own country and their participation was really high," he said. "They weren’t shy; they were very welcoming, and they made you feel like you were part of their community and part of their family." Danielle Sahadevan, 17, a Grade 12 student at Madonna Catholic Secondary School in North York, told The Villager she wanted to go on the trip because she has a "dedication to helping others in her community." "I thought I should take it a step further," she said. "My mom is from the Philippines, and I thought it was a way for me to not only connect with the community, but to also see my mom’s past." Sahadevan added the trip was a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." "Happiness is not from materialistic things, it’s a lot more," she said. "It was really nice to give back to communities that were so caring and so loving." The full journey of Consul’s Philippines trip can be found at catholicstudentleadership.com.

is approximately $60,000, Laskin said, adding the money would be used to help with unpaid rent, staff wages, building upgrades, ticket refunds and more. "But, the $150,000 is needed to see us through creating a new organization and taking over ownership of the building," he said. Laskin said the minimum amount a donor can contribute is $1,000. "We did that because we have such a short window

to reopen on March 3. William ’Grit’ Laskin, the spokesman for the committee, said the goal is to raise $150,000. "We’ve all ready been getting offers from people who have been wanting to help," he said. "We’re hopeful that a minimum amount will be raised to open the doors for a March 3 concert with The Good Brothers." That minimum amount

to raise a hefty amount of money, and if they were coming in $10, $20, $50 or even $100 here or there, we wouldn’t be able to pull it off," he said, adding the group is looking at additional ways for people to contribute whatever amount they can. However, if the goal is not reached by March 3, donors will be paid back immediately. Owner Richard Carson closed the 200-person capacity club near Bloor and

Dundas streets earlier in January, citing financial troubles in a statement. The committee group, which is made up of approximately 10 people that meet once a week, has a long-term goal to develop a business plan that provides the club with a successful future, and hopes to restructure it into a nonprofit organization. Niels Bjelbo wins James A. Murphy CAC Award of Excellence DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com A longtime Keele Community Correctional Centre volunteer says the real danger of a facility full of offenders in a residential community is a lack of understanding by its neighbours. It’s what he strives to educate the public about and it’s this effort that landed Niels Bjelbo a national award. The 77-year-old Bayview and Eglinton avenues area resident received the James A. Murphy CAC Award of Excellence from the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). The centre is where inmates of the federal prison system spend the last six months of their sentence, reintegrating into society, many of whom go out and work in the community. "People look at them

and can see some of them are very employable and present very well, but they’ve just had an accident, something went wrong. They’ve done a crime and paid for it," Bjelbo said. Bjelbo has been volunteering at the Keele and Dundas streets facility since 2004. He joined the facility’s Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) in 2011. CAC members observe daily operations, and talk to staff, the offenders and the community, and bring up the issues that may arise. "We are bridge builders," he said. Bjelbo’s volunteer work has him going door to door, talking to business owners and residents, hosting open houses and tours, and leading inmates in cleanup projects in the community. He has helped offenders find work, helped start a

loan program where offenders can borrow money to buy such things as work boots and TTC fares, helps them get identification and more. But in everything he and the CAC do, and what the correctional centre does, public safety is paramount. "That’s what we have to talk to the public about, about public safety. People fear they just come and go, but no. There is a lot of control," Bjelbo said. Each offender has a case management team who know his or her needs. They are monitored when they step outside, have curfews, their employers receive constant communication and more. Bjelbo said transitioning from the prison to the centre is tough on inmates, which is something the CAC also helps address,

overwhelming for them to come from the prison to the centre for the first time. There’s a lot of unknowns," he said. The success rate for inmates to reintegrate into society is high, Bjelbo said, but it’s the community’s contribution that makes it possible. "By working together, business can help offenders successfully reintegrate. That’s a nice feeling for a business, that you can help someone get back on track again," Bjelbo said. CSC commissioner Don Head congratulated Bjelbo on the award, saying the work of the CAC’s and its members across the country is important. "Their contribution is instrumental in creating safer institutions and ensuring public safety results for Canadians," he said in a news release.
