Grade 7 student wants to be construction worker AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com When 12-year-old Camila Pedro grows up, she plans to follow her father’s footsteps and find a job in construction. Her passion for the trades was a driving factor why the Grade 7 student at Blessed Pope Paul VI Catholic School rolled up her sleeves to practice her skills at the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s (TCDSB) Women Entering Non-Traditional Trades (WENTT) event. "When I grow older, he might take me back to his construction site so I can go work with him," she told Metroland Media Toronto.

"I’m finally getting to learn how to build." Close to 300 grades 7 and 8 TCDSB girls learned about several different trades at the event, which was held at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School April 26. Luciano Di Loreto, project leader with the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program at the TCDSB and a WENTT organizer, told Metroland the event’s goal is to promote the trades as a career option for young women. "For years, there was this stereotype that if you’re a man, you might go into a skilled trade, but if you’re a female, that’s not for you," he said. "And so we’re trying to change that mentality." The girls rotated through three workshop sessions to learn trades such as carpentry, electrical, automotive, welding, heavy crane opera-

tion, landscaping, culinary, plumbing, hairstyling, painting and drywalling. "This is not just a male thing - this is for women too," Di Loreto added. Carpenter and teacher Nicole Ross co-led one of the carpentry workshops. She said she joined the trade because she was excited about the challenging work, and is thrilled to be able to teach it. "I realized before joining the industry that it was male dominated, but I didn’t realize how male dominated or how weird it seemed to some men that women want to work in the trades," she said. "But to be perfectly honest, and there are a lot of stereotypes out there, but I found that the people are incredibly helpful." The next WENTT event, which will be geared toward high schoolers, will be held at Humber College North Campus May 18.

Female students explore non-traditional trades

Last year’s trip to Attawapiskat ‘a real eye-opener’ AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com For 18-year-old Anthony Macedo, soccer has been his "whole life" and he enjoys getting a chance to share the sport with others. Last year, he was given that opportunity when he and his fellow Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton C.S.S. Royals travelled to the isolated Attawapiskat First Nation in northern Ontario to host a week-long soccer camp with the community’s schools. "It was a real eye-opener to see how other people

live around the world and how fortunate I am," the Grade 12 goalkeeper told Metroland Media Toronto. "I just loved putting a smile on other people’s faces." Midfielder Justin Ignacio, 18, agrees with his goalkeeper. "When I saw them play for the first time, it brought me back to when I was playing for the first time," he said. "It was really good team-building." This June, Macedo, Ignacio and the rest of the senior boys’ soccer team will be going back to the First Nation to host another soccer camp and,

most importantly, fulfill their goal which they set last year of returning to Attawapiskat. "We’ve created connections there, and now there’s an expectation as well," said head coach Paulo Pereira. "We promised to go back, we want to go back, our students talk to their students on social media, so there’s this connection now and we want to continue to build new connections and strengthen the ones that already exist." Last April, a suicide crisis shook the community and prompted Attawapiskat’s chief and

councillors to declare a state of emergency. When Pereira and his coaching staff heard the news, they pitched an idea to the team to travel to the community with the goal of instilling hope through soccer to fellow students. The team brought with them gently used soccer gear like uniforms, cleats, nets, balls, whistles and more. "Soccer is really just one way to reach out to the community," said assistant coach Daniel Romano. "But soccer is what stays close to our hearts and what’s helped our own boys through their

own crises." Romano added Attawapiskat is a positive place which has a culture that "takes a lot of pride in their community." "Our boys are really excited about going back," he said. The team plans on visiting the community between June 18 and June 25. "We’re going on those dates because National Aboriginal Day is on June 21," Pereira said. "We’re going to implement the camp, but we also want to give them an opportunity to give us something as well."

The team will be using leftover funds from last year’s trip to travel to the First Nation, but Pereira added they will start another fundraising campaign to help raise money to cover the remaining costs. – With files from Lisa Rainford FRONT PAGE PHOTO (Dan Pearce/Metroland): Bishop Marrocco/ Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School’s senior boys goalie Anthony Macedo leads the cheer before a game against Michael Power/St. Joseph High School last week at Earlscourt Park soccer field.

ABOUT US

Ontario one correction away from a debt crisis The Kathleen Wynne government turned the fiscal page Thursday and introduced a balanced budget, and if you listened carefully you could hear the congratulatory backslapping from Toronto all the way to Port Severn. It was 10 years ago when Ontario ran balanced budgets in 2006 and 2007, but that gave way to $20-billion-a-year deficits in 2008 and 2009 when the economy tanked and the Grits had no choice but to hand the auto industry a $3.3 billion lifeline, or face the collapse of auto manufacturing in Ontario. At the time, then premier Dalton McGuinty made a promise to balance the budget by 2017, and while the Liberals should be commended for getting their budget in order, there’s a bogeyman lurking in the province’s balance sheet. The provincial debt for this fiscal year is expected to hit $312 billion, and in a recent meeting with Metroland Media editors, Senior Economist with RBC Robert Hogue said "tough medicine" is needed to tackle the debt. "Debt has increased quite significantly and debt to GDP is running at 40 per cent," he said. In 2016/17, the province expects to spend $11.4 billion on interest payments on that debt. That’s nearly $1 billion a month just to service existing debt, and in case you need to be reminded, that coin comes from your pocket. To put it in terms we can all relate to, every person in Ontario would need to pony up $22,000 to pay off the debt. Hogue said this massive debt leaves the province without a rainy day fund in the event the economy slows to a point requiring stimulus spending, and if interest rates rise, as expected they will, the interest payments on the debt would skyrocket. We agree with Hogue when he says it’s time the province create a plan to tackle the debt by creating a "hard target for debt to GDP ratio" that sits much lower than where we are now. However, we didn’t get that Thursday. What we did get was a desperate Liberal government waving costly carrots in voters’ faces. The Wynne government’s shopping list includes a drug plan for those under 24 costing $465 million a year and $200 million next year to increase affordable licensed child care spaces. Noble programs for sure, but not at a time when the province continues to add about $10 billion a year in new debt as long as they hold power, and if the Wynne government continues to spend like drunken sailors on shore leave - generations of Ontario residents will be buried under a mountain of debt from which they may never escape.

Toronto Tamils ready to rebuild their homeland In a Scarborough banquet hall, I realized the civil war in Sri Lanka is truly over. Greater Toronto’s Tamil people came here because of that war. They’re the largest Tamil diaspora outside Sri Lanka, and helped make Scarborough, Markham and Richmond Hill what they are today. They came from a country where they felt the majority hated them, discriminated against them, and in many cases tried to kill them. The war ended in 2009 with scenes of horror, as trapped civilians and fighters died by the thousands. Twenty business owners from our Tamil community returned to Sri Lanka in March. They came back calling on others to rebuild

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto the island’s north and east, and to support the island’s government. During the war, people here would have called them traitors. Shaking hands with a Sri Lankan president, or with a Sri Lankan military commander as they did - was unthinkable. For many years, until the RCMP shut them down, the World Tamil Movement col-

lected in Scarborough and Markham for the Tamil Tigers and their breakaway state. Local businesses gave willingly, or unwillingly. The war was merciless. Here, thousands waved the Tiger flag at rallies or carried banners demanding a Tiger-led Tamil Eelam. No compromise seemed possible. In 2009, bombs were falling on aunts and cousins back home. Protesters in Toronto blocked the Gardiner Expressway. Afterwards, Tamils here elected a "transnational government" to keep the fight going. But Sri Lanka’s government changed in 2015. Separatist voices died away. Compromise, that most Canadian of values, has taken hold.

At their press conference, the business owners were candid. Both sides, they say, feel guilty about the war. They know it was a terrible mistake. "We, the diasporas, were the ones that helped fund the war for 35 years," adds Stan Muthulingam, the group’s co-chairperson. Certainly, justice must be done for any atrocities suffered by Tamils in Sri Lanka. But those who made the trip say reconstruction and development are needed now, and the island’s government needs investors. Eventually, war ends. Desire for revenge starts to end. People want to go home, to visit and to do business there again Reach Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

BEST REASONS TO CHOOSE CONDOMINIUM RETIREMENT LIVING

For more than 30 years, the Walk for Dog Guides has raised funds to provide life-changing Dog Guides to Canadians with disabilities at no cost to them. The Bloor Animal Hospital is holding a Nail Trim-a-Thon and bake sale Saturday May 13, with all proceeds going to Lions Foundation of Canada Guide Dog Association and the Walk for Dog Guides. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both cats and dogs are welcome for a nail trim with an appointment. Bloor Animal Hospital is requesting a minimum donation of $20 per nail trim. They are also raffling off a basket, which will be suitable for both dogs and cats, with the hopes of raising as much as possible for the charity, so that a family in need can get a guide dog. Also at the event, pet owners will have the chance to meet Guide Dog puppies! Foster parents will be at Bloor Animal Hospital with their pups, and owners can learn about the training and care

required for puppies to become Guides. From start to finish, it costs $25,000 to train a new guide dog. “People don’t realize how expensive it is to raise and train these puppies to become guide dogs,” says Ashley Kipling, registered veterinary technician at Bloor Animal Hospital. Bloor Animal Hospital is a longtime supporter of the guide dog association. As as vets, not only do they treat the dogs, they also see the strong bond that develops between humans and animals. If you would like to support Lions Foundation of Canada Guide Dog Association by making an appointment for your pet, contact the Bloor Animal Hospital at 416-767-5817. The clinic is located at 2387 Bloor St. W. For more information on the Walk for Dog Guides, visit www.walkfordogguides.com

The Symes, formerly the Symes Road Incinerator, is scheduled to open as an event venue in the fall of 2017, seen here in an artist’s rendering.

Site of old incinerator will be hot spot again DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com

SHOP LOCAL

Family Owned & Operated Since 1961

The former incinerator and later waste transfer station on Symes Road will soon be a hot spot for beers, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and more. The 1934-built, Heritagedesignated Art Deco building, is set to reopen this fall with two businesses operating inside it, and its history will be preserved both inside and out, but with all the modern-day conveniences clients would want. The former Destructor on Symes Road, located just northwest of Weston Road and St. Clair Avenue West, will be home to an event venue called The Symes, and to Junction Craft Brewing. The two business are tenants and are working with the landlord to bring the

building, which sat unoccupied for a quarter of a century, up to today’s standards. Partners in The Symes business, Viviana Kohon, Namita Tandon-Walsh and Caitie Yue, fell in love with the building the moment they saw it. "It’s beautiful," said Kohon, who calls herself an architecture lover. "Even covered in graffiti and the way it was, you could see the bones in that building, those round windows, the brick, the structure, you could tell that building was made and designed with love. Things are not made that way any more." The partners wanted a venue in an accessible location, such as this one, just minutes from the St. Clair transit route, and they were lucky to find one with so much character.

They’re preserving as much of the building’s history as they can. A monument with a plaque will stand outside, showcasing the building’s former use. Some pieces of machinery will be preserved inside as well, as will the exposed beams and the style of the windows, and more. "We are keeping as much as we can," Kohon said. "We had this giant crane that we wanted to keep and put the DJ inside, but it wasn’t safe. So that’s going to be part of the monument outside. We wanted to leave a lot more but there was stuff we had to fix because it wasn’t safe." The Symes will feature two rooms with capacities of 350 and 250 guests and a terrace for up to 250 guests.
