SURF’S UP! Surfing enthusiasts take to the waves of Lake Ontario year-round PHOTOGRAPHY BY JUSTIN GREAVES Larry Cavero could never have imaged surfing the freezing Great Lakes when he first started surfing at age seven in his home country of Peru. But after moving to Canada and discovering the possibilities, he’s opened a new door to his favourite sport. Whether it’s -20C and hailing or the wind is gusting more than 50 kilometres per hour, you can find Cavero ripping up the surf along the Toronto shoreline. Cavero is one of the main organizers leading the surfing community in Ontario. He started Surf Dreams Canada, a local surf store which organizes events like beach cleanups and other environmental awareness events. On top of connecting aspiring surfers with gear and know how, Cavero is always keeping an eye on the weather forecast for rideable waves across Ontario. Surfers use websites specific for determining the size and direction of the waves.

(Clockwise from top) Larry Cavero, (left) and Andrew Dawson celebrate a good day of surfing at the Scarborough Bluffs in mid March; Cavero selects a board in his Brampton home for a day of surfing on the Great Lakes; A group of surfers wait patiently for a wave at the Scarborough Bluffs in early April. The shore lines of Toronto attract surfers from all over the province year-round; Cavero catches a wave.

EDITORIAL | OPINION

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

It’s time to celebrate our everyday heroes In a world often dominated by depressing headlines, inconsequential information and political movements that drive apart rather than bring people together, it’s refreshing to be able to take pause and celebrate something special. This year, we’ve got the Urban Hero Awards to look forward to again. And in all honesty, all the staff at Metroland Media Toronto can’t wait. The program is designed to be accessible to everyone in our city – you, your neighbour, that kid down the street who helps the elderly, teachers, social workers, volunteers – anyone can be an Urban Hero. That’s the beauty of it. It’s an awards program designed to recognized the average people in our communities who do great things, in their own way. For our readers in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough, you’ll remember the awards program from previous years. But this time around, we’re launching with a new look, a slightly new awards process and nominations are open across the entire city. All this, in time for Canada’s 150th celebrations because we thought, what better way to celebrate what it means to be Canadian, by honouring the people that make a difference in the lives of others? Help us out by considering who you know that makes that difference. We’re looking for nominations in the categories of Arts, Business, Education, Environment, Good Neighbour, Health, Social Issues and Sports. Within each category the awards will recognize the ’Titans of Tomorrow’ (Youth 14-18), and the ’Champions of Today’ (Adults 19+). You can nominate someone today, but only until June 11. After we receive and confirm all nominations we’ll be launching an online public voting process, which will determine eight ’people’s choice’ Urban Hero winners. Another eight finalists will be selected by our staff, and the whole group celebrated at a reception later this year. Most recipients are modest about the impact they make, but it’s even more reason to give them the recognition they deserve. They may not be used to the spotlight, but what they do will no doubt serve as inspiration for others. These awards are a special opportunity to tell some really good news stories and demonstrate the strength of the good will that exists in Canada and here at home in our city. Go online to www.urbanheroes.ca to nominate someone or to learn more.

What if Toronto just gives TCHC away? Toronto Community Housing Corporation – (TCHC) – will shut 7,500 apartments in five years unless it gets $1.7 billion. And it probably won’t. Not from the city, not from Ottawa or Queen’s Park. Though Mayor John Tory says it’s reasonable, and a "moral imperative," to split that repair backlog three ways, expecting those governments to do it is a bad bet. At a TCHC highrise in Scarborough Village – newsworthy in 2015, when brick cladding on one side suddenly slid off – Tory sounded like a man convinced he’s doing all he can to fix something before chucking it into the street. True, the province’s budget is out, without new money for social housing,

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto but it’s not too late, Tory said. City taxpayers can’t pay, Tory argued, since that will mean double-digit increases forcing seniors out of their homes. "Property taxes were never meant to fund multibillion-dollar capital projects," he said, a bit rich from the guy backing up the Scarborough subway with a dedicated tax.

Tory wants another term, and the issue risks becoming depressing for him. Should he actually secure the funds, other TCHC buildings will require repairs to stay open. It won’t end. So, here’s a prediction for a three-way split: one third of TCHC’s 58,000 units will go to charities, one third will become cooperatives, and one third will be torn down. Tory’s TCHC task force suggested sending 5,000 units to a co-op board called New Home, and 5,000 to nonprofits who already have housing. He’s sold on the idea. Big corporations – he used to run one – are "very unwieldy," he said, and breaking them up produces greater local autonomy

and accountability. Tory suggested Toronto City Council will get recommendations this month on the possible transfers. If that works, why stop? But the city owns many old and failing buildings, like the highrise Tory visited last week, which it couldn’t transfer to anyone, except the dubious property managers already running them on TCHC’s behalf. Eventually, there will be no answer except demolition. That part sounds like a huge failure for this city, with our shelters full and need ever-growing. But that’s where we’re headed. They were treated to several decades’ rooms which looked at the school’s history, a silent auction, a barbecue and an alumni basketball game. Visitors then gathered in the auditorium for a special presentation of Runnymede’s history. He then ran through the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Ontario averaging an incredible 42 kilometres, nearly a marathon a day. AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com Late St. Clair Gardens BIA chair Don Panos will have a parkette named after him. And city council, at its meeting April 26, unanimously voted to waive the customary two-year waiting period of renaming a property after a deceased person. "What an honour to have that," said Chris, Don’s oldest son. "I can’t say any more than that." The St. Clair Gardens Parkette, which is located near St. Clair and Prescott avenues, has close ties to Don’s legacy. Once riddled with drugs and crime, Don was instrumental in cleaning up the area and the park, councillor Cesar Palacio said. "He was one of a kind,"

he said. "It’s important to recognize the level of contribution he made to the community." On July 12, Don, 72, died of a sudden heart attack. He came to Canada from Macedonia when he was three years old. While here, he had four children and worked as a meat wholesaler in the early 1970s. In 1979, he opened up Don’s Wholesale Meats on St. Clair Avenue. A few years later, Don changed locations where he adopted the name Don’s Meats, selling wholesale and retail meats. In 1985, the BIA was formed, and Don was a founding member. Palacio said the official unveiling of Don Panos Parkette is being planned for the BIA’s Corn Fest in September.

Neighbourhood’s character would change l Continued from front

hear about Minto Group’s proposed development, which was submitted to the city in December 2016. It’s proposing to build two blocks of three-storey townhouses, one 33-storey apartment building attached to a row of three-storey townhouses, and another building of 29 storeys with an eight-storey podium. Also, a two-storey pavilion would be built to accommodate indoor amenity space and programs. The units would be built on Pacific Avenue, Glenlake Avenue and Oakmount Road. "I think it will just utterly change the character of the neighbourhood," said Cathy Brown, co-chair of the High Park Community Alliance. "It’s just a matter of putting the max amount of people into these apartment areas without the consideration of what the tipping point is." The other application,

submitted by Great West Life Realty Advisors in December 2016, proposes to demolish two existing blocks of rental townhouses containing 20 units and eliminate four existing two-bedroom rental units to build four new apartment buildings. The buildings, which would be located between High Park Avenue and Pacific Avenue, south of Glenlake Avenue, would be 39, 34, 29 and eight storeys tall. The proposed developments would add a total of 1,799 units to the neighbourhood. The area currently has about 1,738 units. "That’s maybe 3,000 to 5,000 more people, so how are you going to move those people?" said resident Tom Portman. "Where are these people going to park when they visit? How’s the infrastructure going to be effected by this? I don’t think they’ve considered all of the ramifications." Along with intensification, residents spoke about

the proposed heights, noise, shadowing, removal of green space and more. Brown said she hopes the developers will reduce the size of their proposal, and she hopes the community consultations will bring change, citing residents’ previous failed efforts to make a difference to projects like the Grenadier Square, which was approved by the Ontario Municipal Board in 2015. "There’s a real feeling of distrust in the whole process," she said. "I’d like to see this community meeting really have an effect." Matthew Kingston, vice president of development at Minto, said at the meeting the developers want to continue to work with the community toward an improved application. "I believe the city goes through evolutions," he said. "We are committed to working with you." The Great West Life meeting will take place on May 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lithuanian House.

Hearing Aid Technology

Finally a hearing aid that allows you to hear in all directions! This latest digital technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers – hearing well in noisy environments. Traditional hearing aids only allow the wearer to hear in one direction, which can make it difficult to hear in a public setting like a restaurant. Now with this new breakthrough technology, the wearer can enjoy a dynamic soundscape and differentiate between speech and noise. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind the ear. Everything works automatically, so you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing.

Classical music has been around for decades and orchestras in Toronto are making sure it stays relevant with not only older audiences, but younger ones as well. While new music is constantly being released, younger generations are still listening to classical pieces from composers such as Mozart and Rachmaninoff. What’s pulling younger audiences in and making them the new listeners to classical music? Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra believe they’ve found the formula by offering exclusive events and discounts to its concerts. "I wish more people were aware that these are concerts that are out there," said Grace Egan, memmber of TSO’s TSOUNDCHECK and Tafelmusik’s Tafelscene. "A lot of the belief is that classical music is playing the same pieces, but, there are more unusual composers, pieces you haven’t heard before that you get to experience for the first time. It’s also not expensive; the tickets are reasonable." Since 2001, TSO has offered its exclusive program, TSOUNDCHECK, to audiences between the ages of 15 and 35 that provide concert tickets for less than $20. Tafelmusik started a similar club called Tafelscene in 2013 that offers discounted prices on concert tickets to audiences 35 and under. William Norris, Managing Director of Tafelmusik, said Tafelscene was created to make attending concerts more accessible to younger audiences who have less time and money to spend than older generations. "The music you play, it should be the same music and the same quality for whatever concert it is,"

Norris said. "It’s just about being inventive about how we present it and thinking of the audience’s point-of-view." Norris said adapting to different musical tastes and changing the way classical music is perceived is also important to attracting a younger generation. Last year, Tafelmusik launched its event called Haus Musik, which they describe as ’the classical alternative’. It was created for audiences who prefer a more experimental performance concept and do not want to attend a traditional two-hour performance. "It’s standing and there’s really interesting directors, young and upand-coming music directors in Toronto," Norris said. "We worked with them to reimagine how we present concerts, so it’s not just a white back and a blank stage, but more of an immersive experience. When you walk into the venue, you’re inside the performance." While Tafelmusik focused on performance with Haus Musik, TSO wanted to offer more social opportunities to young adults by creating its Impresarios Club. This club allows audiences in their 20s to 30s donate an annual fee to TSO and receive access to exclusive events and offers. Egan said the Impresarios Club’s Salon events were enjoyable because the audiences are not separated from the performers with a stage. "It’s similar to Tafelmusik’s bar concerts, where you’re really consuming the music the way people used to consume it and the way that it’s meant to be consumed," Egan said. "It’s lovelier that way." TSO’s vice-president of marketing David Postill said the Impresarios Club was created to show a different twist to how music is presented. "It allows them to talk to musicians and sometimes listen to a short

piece," Postill said. "The club enhances the social aspect of music and allows audiences to celebrate it." Egan said these new initiatives are experiencing popularity with younger attendees because traditional performances can feel like a university lecture hall. "In comparison, a seminar class; it’s a more effective way of learning in a smaller scale," Egan said. "With music, it’s a more effective way of communing with it, seeing its beauty, being involved in it and getting consumed by it." TSO has also been expanding its reach to schools with its educational music programs, including: school concerts, open rehearsals and teacher resources. "Public schools are not as strong with music as it used to be," Postill said. "We want to build the next audience by getting them excited and interested in music." With younger generations becoming the new audience to classical music, Postill said they need to meet these demands and adapt to the new changes and requests they present. "Younger audiences are demanding more electronic ways to interact with the concerts," Postill said. "We just have to be more flexible and adaptive to this." Although an older audience still dominates the seats of the concerts, Tafelmusik and TSO are seeing an increase of youth and young adults that are joining its club and attending its performances. Norris said classical music will always have an audience, because the music is definitely not the problem. "We need to think about different ways in which we can present what we do," Norris said, "The music has lasted for 300, 400 years and could easily last for more. We have to respond to people’s changing tastes and how they want to enjoy music."

plished. Parents also need to set limits. Recognition must come first, because limitsetting alone will spoil the relationship between parent and child, Creighton said. However, recognition alone without limits will spoil a child. Pine River offers a residential program in Shelburne, Ont. for youths aged 13 to 19 who struggle with addictive behaviour and mental health problems. Students usually stay for about 12 to 18 months. The institute has space for 36 youths, but has a waitlist of 200, said Pine River Foundation CEO Jennifer Blunt. Because of the demand for its services, the organization is planning more workshops in the Toronto area in the hopes of arming parents with the tools they need so their children should never need the services of Pine River, Blunt said. "We have parents telling us all the time, ’if I only knew what I learned at Pine River four years ago before my kid started getting into problems we might not have needed residential treatment’," Blunt said. Youths don’t misbehave because they choose to, a clinical psychologist who works with adolescents says, but because their maturity level hasn’t kept up with their age. "They look like adults, but they will operate from a very childish perspective," said Dr. Victoria Creighton, clinical director of Pine River Institute, who visited Toronto’s Humberside Collegiate Institute Tuesday, May 2, during Mental Health Week. She spoke to a group of approximately 100 people at a parent workshop. "When a teen doesn’t develop, they will have setbacks - personally, socially and academically. These setbacks will lead to a deterioration of their self-esteem, which will lead them to acting out, and to drugs and alcohol." She said youths will start mouthing off and showing disrespect toward their parents first. If nothing is done about it, the "scarier" things will follow. Creighton’s work follows a maturity model developed by Dr. John McKinnon, with whom she has worked. The model looks at maturity development

from infants, to toddlers, to school children, and to adolescents. Adolescents should be able to think abstract logic (such as things not just black and white), they should begin thinking of a realistic future (such as understanding what subjects they need to study to get the job they want), they should see their parents as separate people with their own thoughts and not just as puppets, they should develop true empathy toward others, they should be able to manage their own anxiety, and they should develop social ethics. Adolescents who don’t develop these maturity levels can end up troubled. Obstacles can play a part in the development of their maturity. This includes learning disorders, chronic intoxication, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or others, plus external factors such as parental divorce, the death of a parent, a parent with addiction or who is ill, bad parenting, adoption and much more. But parents can help their child mature, Creighton said. Youths require accurate recognition. It’s not enough to tell a child "good job" for their achievement. You have to show them you saw what they accom-
