Dragons Abreast Toronto celebrate 20th birthday, Canada’s 150th

| Bloor West Villager | Thursday, June 8, 2017

Breast cancer survivors to paddle Rideau Canal AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com Members of Dragons Abreast Toronto, a dragon boat team made up of female breast cancer survivors, are preparing themselves for a memorable voyage. They will paddle the last 100 kilometres of the Rideau Canal with plans to arrive in Ottawa for Canada’s 150th birthday on July 1. Paddling for Canada 150 was a perfect event to celebrate another milestone Dragons Abreast’s 20th birthday, said Eleanor Nielsen, the team’s founder. "It just seemed like a natural idea," she told Metroland Media Toronto. Nielsen, a breast cancer survivor, was inspired to start the team after meeting women from Vancouver in 1997 who were raving about their own dragon boat experiences. "It just was something that hit me in the heart, and I thought, ’Well, if they can do it, why can’t we do it?’" she said. "They had a unique enthusiasm and joy in the people I met that just seemed like something we should have in Toronto." In November that year, the team formed with 33 members. Now it has close to 106 members, like West Bend resident Joanna Chrystal.

Dragons Abreast Toronto, a dragon boat team made up of women who’ve had breast cancer, are celebrating 20 years together. To mark the occasion, they will be paddling the last 100 km of the Rideau Canal to arrive in Ottawa on July 1.

"I became a new person, I’m stronger and it comes from being with a team of women who are so strong." - Yasmin Alladin, member "They (the team members) always have your back," she said. "That’s one of the greatest things that comes out when joining a team like this is the camaraderie." In the sport, 20 paddlers power the boat, one person steers it and another bangs on a set of drums,

which is considered to be the heartbeat of the dragon boat. The team practices three times a week out of Toronto’s Sunnyside neighbourhood, and participates in local, provincial, national and international events.

But for members like Florianne Yeung, of Riverdale, it’s more than the competition that keeps them going, she said, pointing to the health benefits that participating in the sport brings. "It helps to prevent the development of lymphedema (swelling in the soft tissue of a limb where cancer treatment was performed)," she said. "We just exercise the upper body and stretch our arms and that’s what brought me to dragon

boating." Yeung added she was also attracted to the team after learning it was made up of fellow breast cancer survivors. Looking ahead to the Ottawa trek, member Yasmin Alladin, of Scarborough, said it will be a "great" adventure. "Before cancer, I didn’t think I could do these things," she said. "I became a new person, I’m stronger and it comes from being with a team of women who are so strong."

AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com Carrie Samuels, 58, has lived in Toronto’s Dufferin Grove neighbourhood for more than two decades but that may soon change. "In 22 years, you get to know everybody," she told The Bloor West Villager. "Everybody goes by and says hi, and you go into the park and people know you." Samuels and her 22year-old daughter live in a Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) home on Sylvan Avenue. In February, TCHC filed an application to amend city bylaws in order to sell five stand-alone homes it owns on Havelock Street and Sylvan Avenue. The houses, which contain eight units rented out at market rent, were identified to be sold along with 50 other stand-alone homes in the Putting People First, Transforming Toronto

Community Housing report that was adopted by city council in 2012. Samuels, who was injured in a car accident in 2009, said the possible sell off will hurt her even more. "I’m sick, and this has been my daughter’s only house," she said. "I’ve been deteriorating and it’s not easy." The proceeds of the sales will generate funding for TCHC’s $2.6 billion repair backlog, city staff said in its preliminary report presented to Toronto and East York Community Council April 4. A TCHC spokesperson said the organization still needs $1.73 billion in funding, and has generated $71 million for repairs from stand-alone home sales so far. "Getting rid of us, five houses, is going to do what?" Samuels said. "It’s not going to help." Tracy Heffernan, a lawyer with Parkdale Commu-

Emma Makinson speaks with her daughter, Anik, at her Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) home in Dufferin Grove, which TCHC officials plan to sell. nity Legal Services, is representing a group of tenants in Dufferin Grove. She said the tenants will struggle in Toronto’s hot housing market if the sell off goes through. "The city is allowing af-

fordable housing, which is publicly owned, to be sold off," she said. "What I hope for these tenants is that the city would recognize the short-sightedness of selling off these homes and displacing these tenants into a

market where it’s quite possible they aren’t going to find a place to live." Local Councillor Ana Bailão, who chairs the city’s Affordable Housing Committee, said she wants to make sure tenants are

given proper assistance to find a new home if the application is approved. "We’ve all identified that we need to move forward and the real thing is dealing with the sustainability and financing TCHC properly," she said. "There are extremely valid points raised here and we need to make sure the city is there to support with the process." Emma Makinson, 34, who lives in one of the homes slated for sell off with her young family, said she hopes TCHC will change its mind. "By getting rid of more affordable homes and selling them on the private market, it reduces the diversification of the neighbourhood," she said. "It changes the fabric of the neighbourhood." A community consultation to discuss the sale will be held June 12 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Academy.

ABOUT US

We won’t be intimidated A group of disgruntled city councillors in Brampton seem to be confusing freedom of the press with freedom from the press. Angry with recent coverage by the local newspaper, some councillors are proposing a motion to scrutinize the media’s questioning of elected officials. It’s a thinly veiled attempt to intimidate reporters. The motion calls for all media inquiries to be posted on the city website along with responses. Councillors want future meeting agendas to include time to respond to media coverage. Meanwhile, at least one member of Brampton council has taken to Twitter, suggesting the local paper isn’t providing "real news." If it sounds reminiscent of the antics of President Donald Trump and his staff, that’s because there’s a strong and troubling parallel. This is all in reaction to assertive reporting that is critical of the city’s leadership. Councillors say they have put the press on notice. Such a statement demonstrates a blatant disregard for, or ignorance of, the checks and balances already strongly entrenched in the Canadian media system. Accountability starts with the news outlet itself. Complaints can be made directly to a journalist, editor, or publisher. If the response is unsatisfactory, individuals can contact the press council. The National NewsMedia Council deals with matters concerning fairness of coverage, relevance, balance and accuracy. Its members (including this newspaper) abide by its decisions. It’s a free and open process for the public. When media make a mistake, we own it very publicly. That’s not something everyone can say. And there is the law. Canada has very strict libel laws. These laws protect the reputation of individuals and organizations from false and derogatory remarks. Media are bound by these laws. There have been no formal complaints made regarding recent coverage of Brampton. Instead, this is about a group of councillors lashing out because they are upset with what strong local reporting has unearthed. These councillors forget that media are not accountable to elected officials. Media are accountable to the public, the same group whose money these councillors are spending. Claiming to put the press on notice is a poorly disguised attack on the fundamental freedoms laid out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Councillors are trying to stifle critical voices and control our free, independent and responsible media. Any attempt by elected officials to limit the free flow of information is an attack on the basic democratic principles our society upholds. It won’t work. Metroland Media and all its newsrooms will continue to hold our elected officials to account and report stories that are in the best interest of our readers.

Millennials don’t want suburban Toronto dream Ken Greenberg builds cities, or rather, rebuilds them. And he told an audience of Liberals in Scarborough it’s time to rebuild Toronto’s inner suburbs. Redesigning them will be a "wrenching transition," Greenberg says, and our biggest project of the next two generations. A generation ago, urbanists like James Howard Kunstler predicted North America’s runaway suburban dream would start to collapse when oil became unaffordable. Oil’s now cheap. But Greenberg told the Liberal faithful we must transform large parts of Toronto, or our city won’t stay successful. "Downtown poverty was exported to Scarborough and Etobicoke because of where people prefer to

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto live," the University of Toronto professor says. Growth in its suburbs outpaced Toronto’s core until 2006. Then the script flipped. Millennials have a new North American dream, Greenberg says. They don’t want to live in spread-out suburbs where nothing mixes with anything else. They want to live where they work, walk to get gro-

ceries. They don’t even want a car. They’ve gone downtown, and companies follow them there. Future success will go to Toronto’s mixed-use neighbourhoods. Where does that leave the poorer areas of Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York? Greenberg says we must reverse engineer our wide surburban roads back into lively, walkable streets with more public places where we can meet. Toronto’s multicultural identity is at risk otherwise, because the suburban pattern "keeps people segregated." Surface parking lots and parts of hydro corridors become new mixed use neighbourhoods, a weakness becoming a strength. Can we do this with the suburban politicians we

have? No, probably. Many of them fought, and still fight, to save their "single-family neighbourhoods" against renters, roomers, townhouses, midrise condos, offices for midwives on a major road, or street parking, because certain long-time residents in houses - the people they listen to most - don’t want change. But unless Greenberg is wrong, big changes must come, or those neighbourhoods will stagnate as Toronto’s core becomes unaffordable. He was speaking to almost 100 federal party members. Some may become city councillors or MPPs. Let’s hope they’re brave. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

NEW

Hearing Aid Technology

Finally a hearing aid that allows you to hear in all directions! This latest digital technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers – hearing well in noisy environments. Traditional hearing aids only allow the wearer to hear in one direction, which can make it difficult to hear in a public setting like a restaurant. Now with this new breakthrough technology, the wearer can enjoy a dynamic soundscape and differentiate between speech and noise. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind the ear. Everything works automatically, so you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing.

CANADIANS Chris Hadfield An out-of-this-world Canadian Trying to one-up Chris Hadfield is no easy task. Born in Sarnia, Ont., he is the first Canadian to do a space walk and command the International Space Station. During his last mission, the 57-year-old’s use of social media made him an online sensation. His 2013 music video of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” was also a first in space. Not impressed? A bestselling author, Hadfield has previously worked as a test pilot for military aircraft. Mic drop.

FOCUS

Scrap it! BEHIND THE SCENES: Work starts early in the morning at the Canada Iron & Metal Co. All manner of vehicles pull in to the 1.75 acre lot at the north-east corner of Jane and Dundas streets, with their refuse aboard. After being weighed and paid the scrap is unloaded in a heap in front of a crane

equipped with an electromagnetic grappler, and the sorting begins. Canada Iron & Metal, after all, is a recycler and without a place for everything and everything in its place, nothing would get done. Brass, copper, stainless steel, e-waste and more find their way to bins and eventually out of the lot, to dealers and manufacturers for re-purposing.
