HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com The home of Stan and Paddy Bateman is bursting with more than three decades worth of treasured memories. Photographs of children and grandchildren smiling in front of birthday cakes and Canadian landmarks coat the walls. Pictures of relatives alive and dead are scattered in between, showcasing pieces of their shared history. The 1,400-square-foot, first floor corner unit apartment has the makings of a suburban home and it’s been that way since 1983. For the past 35 years the retired couple has laid a foundation for their family. Memories have been made here, small home businesses thrived and died here and their 26-year-old son, Bret, grew up here. "It’s the only home he’s ever known," said Paddy. But all of it is at risk in the coming years as the pair’s home is one of three units slated for demolition to make way for commercial use as part of a development proposal by Great West Life Realty Advisors. The firm has plans to turn several properties on High Park Avenue and Pacific Avenue into three highrise and one mid-rise rental apartment buildings with retail on the first floor. The development would create 1,031 new rental units with heights of 39, 34, 29 and eight storeys. To make this happen, the developer needs to demolish a block of 20 rental townhouses and eliminate four two-bedroom units in two apartment buildings,

Stan and Paddy Bateman said a memo was slipped under their door in January notifying themtheir unit is one of three to be removed. including one where the Batemans live. Stan and Paddy first found out in January when a memo was slipped under their door notifying them their unit is one of three to be removed. The Batemans were in "disbelief" at the news and the impersonal way it was delivered. The couple have settled in the lush High Park Village community that serves as an oasis away from the busy city. Paddy has easy access to the recreation centre just steps away from her unit where she attends aquafit classes and Stan’s a familiar and friendly face to people in the building. "We’re comfortable and happy here and we just want to enjoy our retire-
ment. That’s all we want to do," explained Paddy. "Do whatever you want outside, but don’t make us move. We’ve worked all our lives to get to retirement and we made it. Can’t we sit back and enjoy it?" The thought of losing their home was too devastating, so the couple have dug in their heels and do not intend to move - ever. Nothing could persuade them otherwise. Stan went so far as to say it would take "a bomb" for them to move out of the space. The retirees have also put in more than $60,000 in renovations to the unit including new floors, lighting and ceiling trims to make the space feel more like their own. Although it will be years before a final decision is
made about their unit, they’ve wasted no time in taking precautions. "We’ve already been consulting with lawyers to prepare for the battle ahead. It’s our last choice. But we’re not moving. Period," Stan firmly told The Villager. "We live here because we want to live here, not because we have to. We don’t want to live anywhere else except in this unit. They’ll have to drag us out of here with the clothes on our backs." The local councillor, Sarah Doucette, sympathizes with the couple, but admits this is new territory. "I haven’t come across this before," she said. "We’ve come across rental replacement where
people are very upset about being moved and some have lived in their townhouse or units up to 40 years, but I’ve never heard of someone who has said I’m not leaving." Regardless, Doucette plans to fight for the Batemans to get a unit in another Great West Life-owned building under the city’s rental replacement policy, with similar square footage and same bedroom count if their home is demolished. But that’s easier said than done. Doucette admits it would be "difficult to replace an apartment of that size." "But we will push for what we can. I still say don’t sign anything; you won’t get anything if you do. We’re still at the early
stages. We don’t know if maybe the proponent will change their mind and won’t have to use Stan and Paddy’s apartment. We will push for that. Let’s just get through the process first because it’s not anywhere near being approved right now." For now, Paddy and Stan will just have to play the waiting game as details surface about the progress of the proposal. They plan to stay positive and do whatever they can to stay in their home at High Park Avenue for their son and for each other because the alternative is grim. "This is truly our home and has been for more than three decades," said Paddy. "If they pull us out here it will destroy us."

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com It’s official. It’s Alex, Geddy and Neil, Toronto’s most-famous and popular capybara babies. Friends of High Park Zoo just announced the winning capy-pup names at a party at the capybaras’ pen at the zoo from which their parents, Bonnie and Clyde, escaped a year ago to much public and media attention. More than 32,000 votes were cast in an online contest by the Friends to name the High Park Zoo capy-babies after Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee and Neil Peart, members of the iconic Canadian band, Rush. "We got more than 44,000 votes from people all over the world," said John Formosa, Friends of High Park Zoo board chair. "It was really quite surprising and bodes well for interest in the always-free High Park Zoo." The winning names turned out to be "a real seesaw battle," said Formosa, LEASE THE 2017 RDX FROM

between Rush fans and fans of the Rice Krispies’ trio, Snap, Crackle and Pop. The Krispies’ names came in first runner-up with more than 9,000 votes. Mocha, Chino and Latte closed out the other popular names with 704 votes. Bonnie and Clyde spent weeks on the lam last year after escaping from the west-end zoo last May. Born on Feb. 23, their new offspring are their first-born. Not long ago, a threat hung over more than the capybaras at High Park Zoo. The future of the zoo itself was in question. In 2012, Friends of High Park Zoo formed to raise funds necessary to keep the zoo open after the city threatened its closure in the wake of budget cuts for the 2012 and 2013 operating years. "I gave a donation when the zoo was going to close. It was the first time I’d been there since I first went when I was less than six

Drumroll, please: Introducing Alex, Geddy and Neil, the three capybara babies of former High Park Zoo escapees Bonnie and Clyde. That same year, the Honey Family Foundation committed to a three-year matching donation program, which has helped to raise more than $380,000 to date.
Since, Friends has raised "a couple million dollars" for High Park Zoo, Formosa said, and has more than 400 active volunteers. High Park Zoo is the oldest zoo in Canada, the thirdoldest zoo in North Ameri-
ca, and in need of capital improvements, Formosa said. Friends conceived a master plan for the High Park Zoo to guide future improvements, including the llama pen, the capybara pen, the aviary and other
animal pens and visitor areas. The first phase of capital improvements is planned to include construction of washrooms, a new storm water management system, new benches and the planting of more than 100 trees and green beds in the zoo pen areas, Formosa said. Phases two and three will enhance the zoo pens, which are century-old log structures, he added. The zoo’s 11 paddocks are home to bison, llamas, peacocks, reindeer, highland cattle, emus and sheep. It attracts more than 700,000 visitors annually. High Park Zoo is open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk with free admission. Visit www.highparkzoo.ca/participate to donate to High Park Zoo. All donations of $10 or more made to the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation directed to High Park Zoo receive a tax receipt.

ABOUT US
Wave the Maple Leaf on Canada’s 150th What makes Canada one of the best places in the world to live? Ask 10 people, you might get 10 different responses. The international community certainly has some thoughts on the question. Canada is consistently ranked among the best nations on the planet by the U.S. News & World Report, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and global brand consultants BAV Consulting. In 2016, the Reputation Institute ranked us second only to Sweden, with Switzerland third. We measure among the top according to the United Nations Human Development Index, as well as the FutureBrand index. Reasons for our lofty status abroad range from our economic and political stability to our education and health care systems, to our relative safety. According to the 2017 Global Peace Index, released by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Canada was rated the eighth safest out of 163 countries. In January, the New York Times announced Canada was its top recommended travel destination for 2017, citing our "cosmopolitan cities, barely-explored natural wonders and everything in between." There are actually countless reasons why this is such an amazing country. There’s Canada’s natural, rugged beauty. We have inclusive social policies, a (mostly) welcoming approach to immigration and refugees. Diversity is not a dirty word here. Our social support programs are there, as are our communities, when people need a helping hand. Our government’s business is conducted, for the most part, in a reasonably transparent, civilized manner. Our game, hockey, is easily the best, as is our side of Niagara Falls and our Rocky Mountains. Our military has a history of punching well above its weight when called upon to defend freedom. Our environment remains largely unspoiled, our cultural and geographic diversity incredible. Many non-Canadians like to poke fun at our penchant for politeness, our readiness to deliver an apology if required, but we’re OK with that. Canadians are patriotic, but we hesitate to blow our own horn. Others do it for us. We know we are not perfect, that there are elements of our past that continue to haunt us. But really, is there anywhere else you’d rather be? On July 1, Canadians will mark our nation’s 150th birthday, with celebrations from coast to coast. We hope everyone joins in and, with passion and appreciation, waves the Maple Leaf.

Toronto celebrates a future of possibility It is going to be a big day on Saturday: for Canada of course, but for Toronto too. The country is 150 years old. Toronto is either 33 years older than that, if you count back to 1834 when Muddy York was renamed Toronto, or 130 years younger, if you count the point at which the Toronto we all know was amalgamated from six smaller municipalities. That, certainly, was the point at which Toronto became if not a linchpin for the country as a whole, then the biggest kid on the block, the largest city in the land. Forgive us, if we take a moment to feel smug about that - a smugness that may be incompatible
DAVID NICKLE The City with the world’s impression of too-polite-for-ourown-good Canadians, but fits right in line with the country’s impression of too-elitist-and-smug-forour-own-good Toronto. It might be polite, then, to use this space to focus on those moments that take us down a peg. That time that Mel Lastman, our first amalgamated mayor, called in

the army to shovel us out after a very heavy snowstorm. Or that time that our third mayor, Rob Ford ... well, all those times. But let’s not do this. This is a birthday party for the whole country, and a good birthday party looks to the future as much as it does to the past. And really, Toronto and Canada’s - future is filled with possibility. In the short term, we have become an island of stability and sanity next to the United States and, so far, at least appear to be able to weather the turbulence from south of the border. That’s good. People will want to come here. To live and to do business.
That opportunity will also present us with challenges, but these are the same challenges that we’ve been facing with sporadic success for the past three decades: transit and transportation infrastructure, housing, and environmental stewardship. We will, going forward, have to do better, and do better more consistently. But that’s all right. We are 150 years young, after all. That means we’re just getting started. Flag Flyers dedicated to promoting national symbol ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Fly the Canadian flag. That’s what a Torontoarea group is urging of Canadian residents, businesses and institutions. The national flag is flown at all federal government buildings, airports and military bases and establishments within and outside Canada. That mandate should extend to all government institutions, including provincial and municipal, says Marga van den Hogen, who in 2009 founded Flag Flyers, an organization dedicated to promoting the Canadian flag. "It’s the most beautiful flag. It stands out. It’s our Canadian emblem," she said, adding the flag should be displayed "to show our patriotism and the government has to set the example for us to follow." John Davies, a founding member of Flag Flyers, said the Canadian flag should be flown at public institutions like town halls and hospitals. "We’re very proud of our health system, and the Americans seem to envy it, and yet we don’t fly flags

Her organization is dedicated to promoting the Canadian colours. in front of them (hospitals)," he said. "The government to me doesn’t seem to promote the flag anymore. I believe it should." Davies suggested Canadians could take a lesson from the U.S. "You see flags all over the place in the States. People are very proud of it," he said. "We don’t seem to have the same pride. We have, I think, pride in our flag for some of the sports teams but not much else." Davies also encouraged everyone attending Cana-
da 150 celebrations to pick up a hand-held flag that’s provided by the government. "The government is spending a lot of money on such things as fireworks. Perhaps it could ensure that all the people who go to see the fireworks are carrying a flag in show of support," he added. Van den Hogen said residents should also "encourage each other" to display the flag. "Just be proud Canadians and show your patriotism."

Community librarians, who work in such places as shelters, employment agencies and elsewhere, can also use their judgment to waive fines when they meet an individual who stopped using the library due to unpaid fines. For some people, using the library’s resources such as borrowing its materials or using its computers - may be a factor in their ability to get a job and improve their circumstances, Hosseini-Ara said. Certain libraries are also more forgiving than others. North York Central Library forgave the most in fines at $20,471, but it also had the highest volume of fines billed at $190,112. Parkdale, which was the next most forgiving with $13,772 in waived fines, had only billed users $84,021 in fines in 2016. In comparison, Cedarbrae billed users $92,083 but waived only $5,676. Hossenin-Ara said Parkdale could be more forgiving because it is in an area with a higher level of poverty. "Parkdale is in one of those Neighbourhood Improvement Areas," he said. "What it comes down to is serving the community." To see how much in fines each library collected and waived, visit bit.ly/ tplfines2017

Those small library fines for late returns really do add up. Toronto Public Library collected more than $2.7 million in fines in 2016. These fines may have been for charges billed to library users in prior years but collected in 2016. Additionally, the library system billed its users $3.8 million in fines in 2016, but is waiting for some clients to pay up. While Toronto’s 100 libraries charged quite a bit of coin for unreturned or late material, they were also fairly forgiving. In 2016, the organization waived $281,899 in fines, $80,000 of which was allocated through a city council-directed fine forgiveness program as part of the city’s poverty reduction strategy. Libraries in Toronto’s Neighbourhood Improvement Areas (NIA) were allocated these funds to help users overcome financial barriers and return to using the library again. The program helped 2,076 customers between January 2015 and March
2016 by clearing their accounts. "It’s just about providing access to those who have stopped using the services because they’re too afraid or too embarrassed, or can’t afford to actually pay the fines and really do need the service," said Moe HosseiniAra, director of branch operations and customer experience. "With this particular program, those individuals whose fines were waived borrowed about 140,000 items within the year after." While the fines forgiveness program is officially over, libraries can still waive fees. Some fines may be waived to help individuals overcome their financial barrier. A fine could also be waived or reduced when a lost item eventually gets returned, or if there is an error and the individual should not have been billed in the first place. For the library, it’s most important to get the item back, as replacement is costly. Staff are trained to use their judgment to waive fines, but it’s based on circumstance, Hosseini-Ara said. Some individuals are also more forthcoming to describe their situation, he said, while others may simply stop coming back to the library.

When you throw food scraps in your Blue Bin, food residue and particles get soaked up by paper and can ruin large batches of otherwise good recyclables. In fact, last year an estimated 45,000 tonnes of organic waste and garbage was incorrectly put into recycling. Meaning a lot of ruined recyclables ended up in the City’s landfill. And that is a very bad thing indeed. Learn what goes in your Blue Bin and what doesn’t at toronto.ca/recycleright

Perth Avenue P.S. unveils 1 Year GIC Special 2.25%! * four Indigenous murals HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com
Perth Avenue Junior Public School celebrated and acknowledged National Aboriginal History Month with the unveiling of four new murals that will be permanently on display in its halls and the planting of three birch trees in the schoolyard. The ceremony included a land acknowledgement, drumming, dancing, and smudging with Aboriginal artist, activist, historian, and cultural interpreter Philip Cote as Master of Ceremonies. Cote has been working with kindergarten and junior kindergarten students to create the murals since January. The murals depict Indigenous groups who once inhabited the lands on which Perth Avenue Junior P.S.
Staff/Metroland
Dancers Mike Healey (right) and Cotee Harper perform during the Indigenous Roots assembly held Thursday, June 22 at Perth Avenue Junior Public School to help officially unveil a series of four aboriginal art murals at the school. sits today. Cote helped the children develop the images through storytelling, pictures, and discussion of the Haudensaunee, Wendat, Anishinaabe, and Cree nations. Then, Cote worked with the students to bring the murals to life. At the same time, parents worked to plan and plant three birch trees at
the front of the school: The trees are symbolic of the white birch canoes that were used by Indigenous nations on river arteries. By participating in the project, students learned not just about the history of First Nations peoples of the area, but also of their traditions, cultures, and experiences.
